Opis:
Scanning force microscope has been applied to investigate wear tracks produced during friction coefficient measurements of hard steel ball against ⟨111⟩ silicon crystals implanted with Ar ions. Such treatment causes the stable and significant decrease in friction, despite the total removal of implanted species from the wear track during friction. Scanning force microscope measurements of wear tracks topography supported the former hypothesis assuming the formation of post-implantation dense microcracks structure and subsequent propagation of this structure into the bulk. Such process assures small size of wear particles and a low friction coefficient value. Additionally the microfriction force measurement method was applied to determine the friction coefficient of Si$\text{}_{3}$N$\text{}_{4}$ cantilever and a wear track in Si crystal.

Opis:
A single crystal of (Pb,Cd)Te solid solution with Cd content equal to 5% was grown by self-selecting vapour growth technique and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction using the X'Pert PANalytical diffractometer and Cu K_{α₁} radiation. The X-ray diffraction pattern refinement demonstrated the fcc structure of the rock-salt type of investigated sample, no precipitates or other crystal phases were detected. The sample chemical composition was determined on the basis of measured lattice parameter value. Next, the Young modulus and microhardness were determined by the nanoindentation for carefully prepared, (001), (011) and (111)-oriented single crystal plates. The slight anisotropy of two parameters mentioned above has been found and compared with available literature data.

Opis:
Professor Petr Kratochvíl initiated a modern investigation of this class of materials in our country. He has been interested in various methods how to improve iron aluminides by alloying, precipitation and insertion of hard particles. He also restored the results obtained already in fifties of the last century in the development of so called PyroFerAl that was produced in Czechoslovakia and used, for example, for heat treatment installations. Professor Petr Kratochvíl has been cooperating with leading institutions for material research, for instance, with the Institute of Physics of Materials AS CR in Brno on creep studies or with the Technical University in Ostrava on material formation processes. Since aluminium is near the nonmetals on the periodic table, it can bond with metals differently than do other metals and hence the properties of iron aluminides, in particular, are different from the other intermetallics. These alloys can be also used as functional materials due to their magnetic properties. Iron aluminides are being developed for use as structural materials and/or cladding alloys in fossil energy systems. They have good high temperature mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. These alloys offer relatively low material cost, conservation of strategic elements and a lower density than stainless steels, and thus they have a great potential for substituting steels at elevated temperatures. However, a wider use of these materials is partly hampered by their moderate ductility at ambient temperatures.

The aim of this study was to compare the hardness and elastic modulus of orthodontic adhesives cured with different light-curing units, based on light-emitting diodes. Standardized samples of orthodontic adhesives, Transbond™ XT, Opal® Bond™ and Light Bond™ were prepared in cylinder blocks and cured for three seconds with Valo Ortho LED (Ultradent Products, South Jordan, Utah) and Valo LED High-Power Mode. After grinding and polishing, specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for one day. Specimens were investigated using nanoindenter. Employment of Valo Ortho unit has resulted in significantly higher elastic modules for Transbond™ XT (p=0.041). The highest nanohardness and elastic modules were measured for Transbond™ XT cured with Valo Ortho (9.47 GPa; 81.85 GPa, respectively) and lowest for Opal® Bond™ for both Valo Ortho (0.44 GPa; 14.52 GPa, respectively) and Valo High-Power groups (0.44 GPa; 11.84 GPa, respectively).

The citrate gel method, similar to the polymerized complex method, was used to synthesize homogeneous tetragonal zirconia at 1000°C. Nanocrystalline tetragonal phase has been fully stabilized at wide temperature range with 10 mol.% CaO, MgO, and $Y_2O_3$ addition. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and microhardness tests are used to characterize synthesized materials. The grain size and dislocation density were calculated from X-ray diffraction data. The examined material exhibits indentation size effect behavior. Results revealed that the Vickers and Knoop microhardness are dependent on indentation test load. Geometrically necessary dislocation model and modified proportional resistance model are used to analyze the load dependence of the microhardness. The highest hardness values were obtained for the samples with CaO addition; however the lowest values were acquired for sample stabilized with $Y_2O_3$ by using both Knoop and Vickers techniques. This situation might be explained using the Hall-Petch relation.

Opis:
The mechanical properties of Al-Li solid solution were studied in tensile deformation tests at extremely low temperature of 0.5 K. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flow stress and work hardening rate as well as the development of serrated (jump-like) deformation for the polycrystalline samples with different microstructure. The samples obtained by severe plastic deformation via hydroextrusion were initially tensed up to a given intermediate deformation, then unloaded, annealed to modify their microstructure, and once again deformed to fracture. The increase of the grain size and decrease of average dislocation density due to annealing were found responsible for the work hardening rate increases and the flow stress decrease in accordance with the superposition of the Hall-Petch and Taylor contributions. As opposed to the flow stress, the high ductility of the samples remains rather insensitive to the microstructure properties, apparently due to suppressed recovery processes as well as the unstable deformation mode at extremely low temperature. The high ductility makes it possible to compare the work hardening rate and the scale of jump-like plastic deformation along the stress-strain curves for samples with different microstructures. In all cases, the average amplitude of the stress jumps was observed to increase whereas the average work hardening rate decreases with deformation. The observed correlation indicates that the nature of both phenomenons follows from the dislocation density evolution processes.

Metals are one of the most widely used types of engineering materials. Some of their properties, e.g. elastic constants, can be directly related to the nature of the metallic bonds between the atoms. On the other hand, macro- and microstructural features of metals, such as point defects, dislocations, grain boundaries, and second phase particles, control their yield, flow, and fracture stress. Images of microstructural elements can be obtained by modern imaging techniques. Modern computer aided methods can be further used to obtain a quantitative description of these microstructures. These methods take advantage of the progress made in recent years in the field of image processing, mathematical morphology and quantitative stereology. Quantitative description of the microstructures are used for modeling processes taking place under the action of applied load at a given temperature and test (service) environment. These model considerations can be illustrated on the example of an austenitic stainless steel, which is an important material for power generating and chemical industry. Reports recently published also show that properties of materials can be significantly modified by the effect of free surface. Examples of such situations include environmental effect on the mechanical properties of materials. Data for an austenitic stainless steel is used to discuss contribution of the free surface to the mechanical properties of metals.

The main goal of nanoindentation tests is to obtain elastic modulus and hardness of the specimen material from load-displacement measurements. With this study, it was aimed to establish a quantitative relationship between the nanomechanical properties of commonly used dental cements in comparison to a newly developed crown cement and to predict its performance potential. Nanomechanical properties of polycarboxylate cement (PCC), glass-ionomer cement (GIC), dual-cure self-adhesive cement (SAC) and a newly developed glass-carbomer cement (GCC) were investigated by nanoindentation tests. All samples were fabricated according to their respective manufacturer's instructions. Available damage on the surface due to manipulation was removed by grinding with 1200, 2400 and 4000 grit sandpaper, and then polishing on 6, 3, and 1 μm diamond-lap-wheel was performed. Nano-mechanical measurements were done using nanoindenter machine with resolution less than 1 nN and displacement resolution of 0.04 nm. Berkovich diamond indenter tip was used for the nanoindentation tests. For each indentation, a set of nanoindentation tests at least on 6 different locations per specimen surface were performed to obtain more representative mean results. Indentation test load-displacement curves were analysed using Oliver-Pharr method, and one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test, following Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk, was used to compare the results. Nanohardness (H_{nano}) values were 0.52± 0.25, 0.45± 0.18, 1.03± 0.82 and 0.43± 0.18 GPa for GIC, GCC, PCC, and SAC, respectively. Reduced elastic modulus (E_{r}) values were 9.51± 6.17, 11.77± 5.04, 27.37± 20.61, 10.33± 5.08 GPa for GIC, GCC, PCC, and SAC, respectively. There was no statistical difference between the tested materials. PCC was the hardest, and GIC was the least hard material, whereas the newly developed GCC was the second, in terms of H_{nano}, before SAC. PCC also had the highest E_{r} mean, compared to the other dental crown cements, suggesting lower elastic properties. SAC was more elastic than GCC and less elastic than GIC. GCC had the second highest E_{r}, standing closer to SAC and GIC. Within the limitations of the current study, it can be concluded that the newly developed glass-carbomer cement is comparable to the other tested commonly used dental crown cements, regarding H_{nano} and E_{r}.

In this work, we have intended to synthesize ZE41 Magnesium alloys having varying content of Ce of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 wt.% and to investigate mechanical properties of these alloys. Alloys were produced by mechanical alloying under argon atmosphere. Structural, and mechanical properties of these alloys were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and nanoindenter analysis. From the XRD data it is found that as the Ce content increases, the crystallite size also increases. On the other hand, the hardness of the alloys decreases with the increasing Ce content. Indentation results show that the measured hardness displays a peak load dependence. Load-independent hardness was calculated by Hays-Kendall approach. As a results, it was found that Ce-doping modifies the microstructure and hardness of the alloy.

In this paper, analysis and interpretation of mechanical property measurements of β-SiAlON ceramic were reported. Indentation microhardness of β-SiAlON ceramic was measured using the Knoop and Vickers indenters. The analysis of the Vickers indentation microhardness data reveals the reverse indentation size effect that is the apparent microhardness increases with increasing applied indentation test load. However, the Knoop indentation microhardness data exhibit indentation size effect that is the apparent microhardness increases with decreasing applied test load. The experimental Knoop microhardness data was analyzed using Meyer's law, elastic-plastic deformation model, proportional specimen resistance model, and Hays-Kendall's model. As a result, modified proportional specimen resistance model is found to be the most effective one for the load-independent $(H_{LI})$ microhardness determination of the SiAlON ceramic. It was seen that different models used to analyze the data obtained from the Vickers indentation do not give the same intrinsic hardness value. We also present the calculation of the Young modulus, E, of the β-SiAlON ceramic.

The structural phase transformation and theoretical strength of fcc metals Ni, Cu, Ag, Al, Au, and Pt under [100] uniaxial loading are studied by using analytical embedded-atom-potential method. In the present calculations the stress-free bcc phase is found unstable and fcc phase is found to be stable. The obtained energy differences of fcc-bcc phases are comparable with those found by the first-principles calculations and experiments for all metals considered. The present pair potential in the embedded-atom method is used for the first time for this purpose. Theoretical lattice parameters, volumes, and energies of the bcc and fcc structures for each metal at zero pressure are calculated and compared with the available experimental values. Third-order elastic constants and pressure-volume curves for studied metals are also investigated and found generally good agreement with experiments.

The observed load dependence was rationalized using the Hays-Kendall model and it was found that the resultant load-independent hardness decreases with increase of palladium ratios. As a results, microhardness decreases with increase of palladium amount.

Opis:
Tungsten is a prime candidate material for plasma facing components in fusion devices, thanks to its advantageous properties with respect to interaction with hot plasma. For its bonding to the supporting structure, composites and graded layers can be used for the reduction of stress concentration at the interface. When tungsten and steel are processed at elevated temperatures, e.g. hot pressing or spark plasma sintering, intermetallic phases may form and their presence and properties will affect the properties of the composite. In this work, mechanical and thermal properties of the individual phases, i.e. steel, tungsten and Fe-W intermetallics are investigated. Mechanical properties were determined by instrumented indentation. Thermal conductivity was determined by the xenon flash method on a range of samples with varying composition, from which the conductivities of each constituent were estimated. The results can be used for the optimization of compositional profiles and processing conditions for manufacturing of plasma facing components.

The aim of this study is the comparative evaluation of surface roughness, elastic modulus and hardness values of some new generation fissure sealants using nanoindentation method and triboindenter. In this study, we have tested five different materials of dental fissure sealant in five groups with six specimens in each. Tested specimens were prepared from the following materials; Fuji Triage as a glass ionomer, Glass Seal as a glass carbomer, Ultra Seal XT Hydro, Teethmate F-1 and Defence Chroma as three resin composites. In the study, Hysitron Triboindenter TI 950 machine was used for nanohardness measurements. This machine has load resolution of less than 1 nN and displacement resolution of 0.04 nm. Data were statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z tests. Hardness values of Fuji Triage, Glass Seal, Ultra Seal XT Hydro were fairly close. Same situation was seen between Teethmate F-1 and Defence Chroma. However, hardness values of the Teethmate F-1 and Defence Chroma was lower than in other examined materials. We can also say that the Defence Chroma has the lowest elastic modulus and Fuji Triage has the highest one among the examined materials. Surface of Teethmate F-1 was the roughest. On the other hand, Ultra Seal XT Hydro has the smoothest surface.

CoCrMo alloys are often used as the material for metal artificial joint because of their high corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. In this study CoCrMo alloys having different palladium amount of produced by investment casting method. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction method and indentation tests were used to examine the mechanical properties of the alloys. Indentation experiments were carried out using Vickers indenter that the loads range from 0.245 to 9.8 N. The alloys exhibit significant load-dependence (i.e., indentation size effect). Meyer's law, proportional specimen resistance model, and Hays-Kendall model were used to analyze the load dependence of the hardness. As a results for load-independent determination of the CoCrMo alloys, the Hays-Kendall model is found to be more effective than the proportional specimen resistance model and microhardness values decreases with increase of the Pd content.

The aim of this study is to compare microhardness, roughness and micromorphology of the examined materials of a newly developed glass carbomer dental filling material to two different resin modified glass ionomers and a glass ionomer dental filling material. Specimens tested were prepared from a glass carbomer without gloss (Glass Carbomer, GCP), a glass carbomer (Glass Carbomer, GCP) with gloss, two different resin modified glass ionomers (Fuji II LC, GC and Riva LC, SDI) and a glass ionomer (Equia, GC). Seven specimens of each material were prepared according to manufacturer's recommendations. After setting, samples were polished and stored in 37°C distilled water for 24 h. Indentation microhardness of examined restorative materials was measured using the Vickers indenters. In addition surface roughness of the materials was measured using surface profilemeter. Surface morphology was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy. There was a significant difference in microhardness and roughness between the restorative materials (p<0.05). The highest microhardness was measured for Equia and lowest for glass carbomer with gloss. The roughness was fully definite for the glass carbomer with gloss and indefinite for the glass carbomer without gloss. Small cracks and voids were observed in all groups. High viscosity glass ionomer cement Equia exhibits the high physical strength than RMGIC. Gloss application does not influence the hardness behavior of GCP.

Phonon-phonon coupling and thermoelastic relaxation are the principal thermal causes of ultrasonic attenuation in solids at room temperature. Second order elastic moduli and third order elastic moduli have been used to study the ultrasonic attenuation suffered by compressional and shear acoustic waves for some tetrahedrally bonded semiconducting materials, viz. GaP, InP and InAs along ⟨100⟩, ⟨110⟩ and ⟨111⟩ crystallographic directions. Attenuation in case of InP is found to be quite large as compared to GaP and InAs. The reason behind this discrepancy is due to doping of Cr in InP sample and it is also seen that ultrasonic attenuation due to phonon-phonon interaction dominates over that due to thermoelastic relaxation.

We have employed the density functional theory plane-wave pseudopotential method with local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation to investigate the structural, elastic and mechanical properties of the intermetallic compound NiGa. The calculated equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus are in good agreement with the experimental and other calculated values. According to our best knowledge, from the elastic constants, the bulk modulus B, anisotropy factor A, shear modulus G, the Young modulus E and the Poisson ratio σ for NiGa compound are obtained for the first time. By comparison, our results for the elastic constants C_{ij}, bulk modulus B, shear modulus G and the Young modulus E are as good as those of NiAl compound. The dependences of the elastic and mechanical parameters of NiGa compound on pressure were also investigated. It was found that the cubic NiGa compound is mechanically stable under pressure according to the elastic stability criteria up to 13 GPa, and it is not elastically isotropic. By analyzing the ratio (B/G), it was concluded that NiGa compound is ductile in nature.

Both pressureless-sintered and dense, fine-grained silicon nitride ceramics were produced from mechanochemically activated nitride-based precursors. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmition Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and an ultra-low load microhardness tester were used to characterize these ceramics. Depth-sensing indentation (DSI) tests in the range of 200-1800 mN were performed on the silicon nitride ceramic to determine dynamic hardness (H_d) and reduced elastic modulus (E_r) values. These values were deduced by analyzing the unloading segments of the DSI curves. It was found that both H_d and E_r exhibits a significant indentation load dependence. Nix-Gao (NG) model was used to analyze the dynamic hardness data in the calculation of the load independent hardness value.

The $λ^{2}$ dependence on acoustic field intensity (and hence RF drive power) can render large aperture acousto-optic tunable filters impractical for many applications beyond about 2 μm. One potential technique for reducing the RF drive-power requirement is to configure an acousto-optic tunable filter such that the interaction region is at acoustic resonance. We describe an acousto-optic tunable filter that operates at resonance and present an analysis of the predicted performance. In addition, we address the practical issues in deploying such a scheme. Finally, we present results of a prototype "resonant acousto-optic tunable filter" operating in the 1-2 μm region.

The hardness of borides, boride layer thickness and room temperature tensile properties were measured and it was observed that hardness and tensile properties strongly depend on chemical composition of steels. In addition, the effect of a notch on impact behavior was examined by conducting the Charpy tests on borided and unborided steels. Our finding of the current spike effect highlighted for the first time in 2009 offers an enhanced understanding of the link between nanoscale mechanical deformation and electrical behavior, and ultimately suggests key advances in unique phase-change applications in future electronics. Certainly, crystal imperfections affect the properties of the nanoparticles themselves, e.g., their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The potential role of dislocations having a profound impact on the use of Si nanoparticles was largely overlooked, since plastic deformation of bulk Si is dominated by amorphization and phase transformations. Here we show an effect of bulk → nanoparticle transition (deconfinement) on incipient plasticity of Si-nanovolume. Our results provide a fresh insight into the dilemma concerning dislocation or phase transformation origin of nanoscale plastic deformation of semiconductor nanoobjects.

The structural phase transition and elastic properties of CoN are investigated by ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density function theory method. The equilibrium lattice parameters a₀, elastic constants C_{ij}, bulk modulus B₀ and its derivative B'₀ are calculated. From the usual condition of equal enthalpy, the phase transition of CoN from zinc-blende to rocksalt structure occurs at 35.4 GPa with a volume collapse of about 15.6%, consistent with the calculated result 36 GPa (FP-LDA), but an uncertainty is about 4.4 GPa compared with the 31 GPa (ASA-GGA). All three independent elastic constants, C₁₁, C₁₂, and C₄₄ for CoN are calculated from direct computation of stresses generated by small strains. Both C₁₂ and C₄₄ are less sensitive to pressure as compared with C₁₁. The calculated conclusions offer theoretical data for the further research of the mechanical properties for CoN.

This paper reports an experimental study on the design of self-compacting lightweight concrete using acidic pumice with different powder materials. For this aim, nine self-compacting lightweight concretes were designed with inclusion of two different fine aggregates and different powder materials. This way, two groups of concrete were designed. First group was composed of single type of aggregate which is acidic pumice from Bitlis Region with barite powder, fly ash powder and pumice powder inclusion, while the second group was generated with river sand as a fine aggregate and acidic pumice from Bitlis Region, as a coarse aggregate with the same powder addition. In the design process, slump-flow, V-funnel and L-box tests were applied to determine the fresh properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete. After the design, test of compressive strength, which is one of the most important parameters of concrete, was applied to all self-compacting lightweight concretes in early age. Moreover, ultrasound pulse velocity test was also performed on all concrete series at the same ages.

Light-weighting is a new scope in the automotive industry to accommodate new emission regulations. The parts produced with conventional metallic materials are replaced with parts produced by using light weight or high strength materials, to obtain light weighted equivalents of the same strength. Foam core sandwich structures, high strength steels, composite materials are the most used alternative materials. Syntactic foams that show outstanding performance in case of high-speed collisions have an excellent utility as energy absorbers in vehicle crash boxes. Syntactic foams are modeled in crash boxes at various filling rates and filling patterns in the context of this study. As results of the FEM analyses, it is observed that syntactic foams have excellent crash performance, as well as weight-reducing effect in vehicle crash boxes.

Micro/nano soft magnetic composite based on the Fe microparticles and the MgO nanoparticles was prepared by cold pressing followed by microwave sintering. Magnetic and mechanical properties of the green compact as well as sintered samples were measured. Coercivity, permeability, resistivity, elastic modulus and transverse rupture strength values in dependence on MgO content were investigated. The influence of MgO content ratio on properties was different in the case of as pressed green samples in comparison to sintered bodies. Microstructure formation and its influence on mechanical and magnetic properties are discussed. The coercivity of the green compacts with 1-5 wt% of MgO exhibits approximately 460 A/m and after sintering decreases to approximately 290 A/m. The real part of complex permeability at the frequency of 100 kHz exhibits a maximum for 2 wt% of MgO in green compacts, while for 10 wt% in sintered samples. It was observed that increase of the content of MgO causes decrease of the permeability. Properties of the sintered composite are related to formation of magnesium ferrite as well as volume distribution of residual MgO in dependence on initial MgO ratio.

In the present study, powders produced from the volcanic basalt rocks were coated on pre-coated AISI 1040 steel with Ni-5% Al bond coat by atmospheric plasma spray coating technique. The coated specimens were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, metallography and X-ray diffraction. Bonding strength of coatings was evaluated in accordance with the ASTM C-633 method. Coated basalt material from the APS coating system was determined in the glassy amorphous state by X-ray diffraction analysis. The coated samples were heat-treated at 800C for 1-4 h for crystallization. The phases formed in the basalt base glass-ceramic coatings were augite, Fe-diopside, anorthite, and andesine which were detected by X-ray diffraction analysis. Basalt based glass-ceramic coatings include splat, porosity and un-melted particles which were the characteristic of plasma sprayed coatings. Experiment result showed that the crystallization time increase caused the decrease of the bond strengths of the coatings.

Reconstructive phase of medical treatment, especially in dentistry, requires the use of different polymers. A common laboratory method to increase the fracture resistance of acrylic resin dentures is to include high-resistance synthetic fibres in the processing protocol. However, in the case of aramid fibres the problem of ensuring high durability of bonding between the fibre and acrylic resin has not been solved yet. The aim of the study is to evaluate the mechanical properties and microstructure of acrylic resin reinforced with modified aramid fibres used as fillers or as fibres treated with epoxy resin. In this study mechanical strength of 10 samples of aramid fibres Kevlar (DuPont) and 10 samples of acrylic resin ProBase (Ivoclar) was determined. The controls were unreinforced samples. The three point loading tests were carried out on a universal testing machine Hounsfield. The structures of the fillers and composites were characterised by the scanning electron microscopy. The results are presented graphically in diagrams and table.

The coatings investigated in this paper were deposited via the magnetron sputtering of $AlN-TiB_2-Ti-Si_2$ target in Ar atmosphere. The investigation of structural-phase composition, element composition, morphology and mechanical properties before and after annealing up to 1350°C was carried out. The concentration of elements in the coating was changed after annealing at 900°C and further annealing at 1350°C (especially after annealing at 1350°C). The hardness of as-deposited coatings was 15 GPa, but after annealing at 1350°C the value of hardness increased up to 22÷23.5 GPa. The value of the viscoplastic index was 0.07. All this provide high damping properties of the coating, and amorphous-like structure makes promising the use of these coatings as diffusion barriers in the form of independent elements, and as a contacting layer in multilayer wear resistant coatings.

Opis:
In the present study, effects of material non-homogeneity and two-parameter elastic foundation on the fundamental frequency parameters of the simply supported beams are examined. Material non-homogeneity is characterized taking into account the parabolic variations of Young's modulus and density along the thickness direction of the beam while the value of Poisson's ratio is assumed to remain constant. The foundation medium is assumed to be linear, homogeneous and isotropic, and it is modeled by the Pasternak model with two parameters for describing the reaction of the elastic foundation on the beam. At first, the equation of the motion including the effects of the material non-homogeneity and two-parameter elastic foundation is provided. Then, the solutions including fundamental frequency parameters versus various non-homogeneity, density and foundation parameters, and length to depth ratio adopting the Timoshenko beam theory as well as the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory are presented. To show the accuracy of the present results, a comparison is carried out and a good agreement is found.

This paper presents and discusses the results of the instrumented indentation test of the samples of the system $Bi_{x}(As₂S₃)_{100-x}$, x= 1.5, 3, 5, and 7 at.%. Measurements of mechanical parameters were performed using a Fischerscope HM2000 S nanoindentation device. The experimental data obtained by measuring the microhardness parameters were used to determine some other mechanical quantities that are important for the characterization of the examined materials in terms of their potential applications. For the first three compositions, the results indicated an increase in the microhardness with the increase in the content of doping atoms, which can be interpreted as an enhancement of the strength and stiffness of the structural network. The lower value of microhardness of the sample with the maximum content of Bi can BE associated with the specific structure of this composition. The pronounced indentation size effect was also detected on the indentation curve in the range of smaller loads. According to the model of elastic-plastic deformation, applied for the description of indentation size effect measured for the investigated chalcogenides, the largest value of the elastic recovery was observed for the sample Bi₇(As₂S₃)₉₃. The calculated values of the elasticity modulus show that the glass with x= 5 at.% Bi is characterized with the highest atomic packing density.

Syntactic foams are closed cell structured foam materials and present improved properties for lightweight and high performance material requests. They have been widely used in naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering applications on account of their good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, dielectric properties. In this study, a novel high strain rate sensitive syntactic foam was developed. A rigid polyurethane resin was used as a binder material. Glass bubbles were used as an additive for producing cell structure. Elastomeric silicone rubber resin were used to change elastic properties of the foam as an additional binder material. Quasistatic compression properties and high strain rate compression properties were obtained by using Instron Universal Tensile-Compression Machine and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experimental setup respectively. The results show that developed foams are low dense and very high strain rate sensitive materials. Consequently, developed foam can be used for the blast, impact or ballistic mitigation purpose as a coating material.

The purpose of this paper is to declare the results of investigation conducted on design of fibre reinforced self compacting lightweight concrete which has three different concrete technologies, and high temperature effect on it. For this aim, it is desired that production of new kind concrete material composed of fibre reinforced concrete, self compacting concrete and structural lightweight concrete technologies using all their better benefits. In this study, fly ash was used as a powder to reduce Portland cement consumption as well as CO_2 emission through the use of that waste material. A control self compacting concrete and 7 fibre reinforced self compacting lightweight concretes were designed applying slump flow (T50-flowing time and flowing diameter) and V-funnel tests to determine fresh concrete properties. In the design of fibre reinforced self compacting lightweight concrete, both single and hybrid fibre reinforced self compacting lightweight concrete mixes were produced using 1 macro and 1 micro steel fibres in different lengths and aspect ratios. Hybrid fibre reinforced self compacting lightweight concrete mixes were prepared using macro fibres together with micro fibre at three different percentages (50%-50%, 25%-75%, 75%-25%) by weight. After design process, cubic and prismatic concrete specimens were produced to determine hardened properties at standard concrete age. Firstly, flexural tensile and compressive strength tests were performed on the concrete specimens on 28 day. Lastly, the concrete specimens were heated up to temperatures of 200, 400, 600 and 800C then compressive strength and flexural tensile tests were performed to identify high temperature effect comparing to strength test results obtained from standard laboratory conditions. The test results showed that concrete mixes including macro fibres gave the best tensile strength properties, although they gave the worst fresh concrete properties.

This paper reports results of an experimental study of the strength properties of fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete (FRSCC). For this aim, a control self-compacting concrete and 24 FRSCCs were designed, applying fresh self-compacting concrete criteria tests. In the design of FRSCC, four steel and two polypropylene synthetic fibres of different lengths and aspect ratios were used. These fibres were used alone and in combinations with two and four of these fibres. In this way, not only the effect of single fibre and the synergy effect of hybrid fibres, but also the size and concentration effect of fibres, which had different ratios in total fibre volume, were investigated. In the design process, Portland cement and fly ash were used as the binder and the powder material. The compressive and flexural-tensile strength tests were employed at the age of 3, 7, 28, 56 and 90 curing days, to determine the strength properties of FRSCCs. Moreover, ultrasound pulse velocity test was also performed on all concrete series at the same ages.

High-entropy alloys have attracted increasing attentions because of their unique compositions, microstructures, and adjustable mechanical and functional properties. In this work, mechanical and magnetic properties of the FeSiBAlNiMo high-entropy alloy were studied in heat-treated conditions. Influence of temperature and time of sintering was investigated. The lowest coercivity H_c=370 A/m was reached at sintering temperature 580°C, during 20 min in Ar/10H₂ atmosphere. Resistivity decreases from R=0.006 Ωcm at 580°C of sintering temperature to R=0.0004 Ωcm at temperature 1100°C. Transverse rupture strength TRS = 340 MPa as well as the Young modulus E=87 GPa were much higher in the case of sintering at 1100°C in comparison to TRS = 5 MPa and E=7.5 GPa at sintering temperature 580°C. Low temperature consolidation made possible to structure recovery and stress relief of amorphous-nanocrystalline structure. Higher temperature above 1100°C induced sintering processes and formation of complex borides.

A theoretical study of the phase transition of samarium monochalcogenides using three-body interaction potential model is carried out at high pressure. The three-body interaction potential includes long range Coulombic, three-body interaction forces and short range overlap repulsive forces operative up to next nearest neighbor ions. We have investigated phase transition pressures, volume collapses, elastic behavior, stability criteria and various thermo physical properties at various high pressure. The results found are well suited with available experimental data. In this paper third order elastic constants are also reported for the first time which helps in understanding the nature of interionic forces in ionic solids which paved the experimentalist to work in specific direction.

In this paper, the correlation between the processing conditions, the lattice defect structure and the plastic behavior of ultrafine-grained materials is overviewed. For the processing route of severe plastic deformation, the influence of applied strain, hydrostatic pressure, as well as melting point, stacking fault energy and alloying on grain size, dislocation density and strength is studied. For nanopowder sintering techniques, the effect of atmosphere, temperature and time of consolidation on lattice defects and mechanical properties is discussed in detail.

Opis:
In this study, new potential parameters for Mg₃Bi₂ are proposed which is the Born-Mayer-Huggins type potential. Static, dynamic and transport properties are studied for this material from 300 K up to 1600 K with classical molecular dynamics simulation. Mechanical properties; like elastic constants ($C_{11}$, $C_{12}$, $C_{13}$, $C_{33}$, $C_{44}$), bulk modulus and shear modulus are found. All these data are compared with the limited number of experimental and first-principle studies. Our results give a good description of the Mg₃Bi₂ system: lattice constants, α → β transition temperature, melting temperature, diffusion coefficient, density and mechanical properties are promising.

Opis:
At present study of Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy system is used. Some physical properties of martensitic and bainite phase transformatios in Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn (wt%) alloy were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. In scanning electron microscope observations of Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy were noted two kinds of martensitic phases. These phases were defined as β'₁ (M18R) and γ'₁ (2H) martensites structures. According to differential scanning calorimetry measurement results, the deformation induced temperature is expected to be higher than the thermally induced temperature in Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy for martensite and bainite structures.

Opis:
A simple and fast approach to the design and production of new hybrid polymeric biomaterials with silver particles is presented in this work. Silver/semi-interpenetrating network hybrid hydrogels (Ag/semi-IPNHHs) were prepared through an optimized solution crosslinking copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and itaconic acid (IA), in the presence of PVP, a silver salt and a reducing "green" agent (Ag/P(HEMA/IA)/PVP). PVP was chosen due to its protective, reduction, and nucleation properties in the production of metal particles. The structure of the Ag/semi-IPNHH was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The presence of silver and PVP in the network was confirmed by FTIR spectra. The results obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed good mechanical properties for all samples. The swelling studies of Ag/P(HEMA/IA)/PVP were conducted in the temperature range of 25-55°C, in the buffer of pH 7.40. The Ag/semi-IPNHH showed temperature-sensitive swelling properties, with the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) values in the physiologically interesting interval. The antimicrobial activity of the samples was tested using E. coli, S. aureus and C. albicans pathogens. It was concluded that the antimicrobial potential depends on the hydrogel's composition and the type of microbes

Opis:
NiTi-based shape memory alloys are metallic materials exhibiting remarkable response to mechanical and/or thermal loading, e.g. superelasticity, pseudoplasticity or one-way shape memory effect. They can be engineered into structures of micro-size dimensions, hence, they appear promising for application in micro-electromechanical systems. For their efficient utilization, appropriate characterization is important. Due to relative simplicity, indentation represents a very standard and popular technique for basic characterization of metallic materials providing information about stiffness and hardness. Moreover, it can be used for identification of other events in the material. This study aims to verify applicability of the recently developed constitutive model for NiTi-based shape memory alloy in simulations of nanoindentation tests. The model is fitted to a particular sample material using experimental data, and a series of simulations mimicking tests at various temperatures is performed. Since the model also captures two-stage martensitic transformation via the intermediate R-phase, its influence on the simulations is investigated as well. It is confirmed that spherical indentation is a suitable method for simple and fast detection whether the material is in superelastic or pseudoplastic regime.

Using examples of some perspective electronic materials (HgSeS, $Fe_3O_4$, InN, and others) it is shown that magnetoresistance data at high magnetic fields allow evaluating the true values of mobility of charge carriers in spite of any "adverse factors". Additional impacts involving high pressure and irradiation with high-energy particles (neutrons, electrons, ions) produce the enhancement of magnetoresistance technique of testing and allow to go into details of the type of electron structure and scattering mechanisms of charge carriers.

Opis:
The effect of nitrogen ion implantation on Stellite 6 cobalt alloy was investigated. In this research, cobalt alloy was implanted with 65 keV nitrogen ions at the fluence of (1÷10)×10¹⁶ N⁺/cm². The distribution of implanted nitrogen ions and vacancies produced by them was calculated using the SRIM program. The surface morphology was examined and the elemental analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. The wear tests were conducted with the use of the pin-on-disc method. The results demonstrate that implantation with nitrogen ions significantly reduces the friction factor and wear. The friction coefficient of the implanted sample at the fluence of 1×10¹⁷ N⁺/cm² increased to the values characteristic of an unimplanted sample after 5000 measurement cycles. The depth of the worn trace was about 2.0 μm. This implies that the thickness of the layer modified by the implantation process is ≈2.0 μm and exceeds the initial range of the implanted ions by an order of magnitude. This is referred to as a long-range implantation effect. The investigations have shown that the long-range effect is caused by movement of not only implanted nitrogen atoms but also carbon dopant atoms towards the friction zone. Diffusion of carbon atoms has been documented here for the first time. Furthermore, the increased content of oxygen atoms on the track bottom indicates a dominant oxidative wear of the Stellite samples after nitrogen implantation with the energy 65 keV and the fluences of 5×10¹⁶ and 10¹⁷ N⁺/cm².

The influence of the strain rate and heat treatment on the occurrence of plastic instabilities in a cast AlSi1MgMn alloy was studied. The samples were uniaxially loaded in compression at various strain rates and at room temperature. The tests were done with concurrent acoustic emission monitoring and the acoustic emission parameters are correlated to the microstructure and to the stress-strain curves in order to better understand the patterns of plastic deformation. All samples exhibited the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect of different types, dependently on the heat treatment and the applied strain rate. The occurrence of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect is manifested by acoustic emission signals with high amplitudes. Statistical analysis of the acoustic emission signals shows the power-law probability distribution.

Opis:
Surface modification of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) by nitrogen ion implantation and ion beam-assisted deposition (C, N) was investigated. The depth distribution of implanted nitrogen atoms was analysed using the Rutherford backscattering technique. Nitrogen implantation reduces the coefficient of friction and wear. A better effect can be obtained when nitrogen implantation is combined with carbon deposition. Based on the changes in the coefficients of friction and wear as well as profilograms of wear tracks, the improvement of the tribological properties was found at a depth exceeding nearly 5 times the range of the implanted nitrogen ions. Identification of the long-range effect for Ti6Al4V alloy was performed on the basis of tribological analyses. This study is a continuation of research conducted for AISI 316L and H11 steel.

Opis:
We propose a novel method to calculate acousto-optic figure of merit in crystals. Calculations are performed in laboratory coordinate system where Z'-axis is collinear with wave vector of ultrasound and the Fresnel equation is considered as an equation on the third component of refractive index vector. The method is applicable to both uniaxial and biaxial crystals. In this paper, we compared obtained values of acousto-optic figure of merit with values from literature data for uniaxial crystals such as paratellurite, lithium niobate, tellurium and for biaxial crystals such as lead and strontium tetraborates. Calculations in paratellurite were carried out for slow-shear acoustic wave propagating along [110] crystal axis. In lithium niobate crystal, we perform comparison with results for geometry of acousto-optic interaction where acoustic wave vector forms 88° angle with X crystal axis and 150.4° angle with Z crystal axis. In tellurium crystal, we investigate geometries applied in infrared deflectors. In $SrB_4O_7$ and $PbB_4O_7$ crystals we analyze acousto-optic characteristics of slow-shear mode propagating along [100] crystal axis. Spatial distributions of acousto-optic figure of merit and acoustic frequency for the mentioned acousto-optic interaction geometries are presented.
