Opis:
The transition effect between different track-foundation systems is examined from the point of view of energy that is produced during the passage of load. Analytical solution is given. A model of beam on elastic foundation with damping is used as the base model. It is developed into a model composed of two parts that represent the track-subgrade system with an abrupt change in mechanical parameters: bending stiffness, foundation stiffness, damping, and mass. Several calculations are carried out including examples of comparative calculations with the Finite Difference Model and the Finite Element Model. Transient rail deflections and energy are determined, which may serve to estimate the rate of track-subgrade deterioration.

In the paper the field measurements concerning track and subgrade stiffness within bridge abutments and transition zones have been presented. On the basis of the field data the numerical calculations have been performed using the Finite Difference Model and Finite Element Models (2D and 3D). Good agreement between the measured rail deflections and calculated deflections has been found. The influence of the foundation nonlinearities on the obtained rail deflections has been discussed.

Magnetic measurements of $HoAl_{2}$ are reported. The compound crystallizes in the cubic $MgCu_{2}$-type crystal structure. $HoAl_{2}$ exhibits two successive magnetic transitions: below $T_{c}$ = 29 K a ferromagnetic order is formed while anomaly at $T_{t}$ = 20 K is related to reorientation of magnetic moment. Near transition temperatures a magnetocaloric effect with magnetic entropy changes -$ΔS_{m}$ equal to 6.3 J/(mol K) at $T_{c}$ and 5.0 J/(mol K) at $T_{t}$ for an external field $μ_{0}H$ = 9 T is observed.

We did a density functional theory spin-polarized calculation based on pseudopotential method on the effect of both vacancy and substitutional impurity in the tungsten tri-oxide lattice. We investigated oxygen and tungsten vacancies and for substitutional dopants we used palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) atoms with the formula $A_xW_{1-x}O_3$ and x=0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5. We obtained electronic band structure, density of states and magnetization of defected and doped WO₃. The results show that in the presence of tungsten vacancy, WO₃ acts as a semiconductor with an indirect band gap while oxygen vacancy induces a metallic behavior for WO₃. Besides, for Pt and Pd the location of trap states lead to photoexcited hole capturing, which can improve photocurrent but for Au dopant, the trap states occur in the middle of the band gap as active recombination centers. Furthermore, both kind of vacancies and Pt dopant can induce magnetization in all values of x, while Pd and Au are less efficient in inducing magnetization.

Opis:
Secondary isotope effects for carbonyl addition reactions of methyl thioacetate, acetone and acetaldehyde have been calculated by ab initio quantum mechanical methods in an effort to interpret measured beta-deuterium isotope effects on acetylcholinesterase- catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine. The calculated beta-deuterium isotope effect for equilibrium addition of methanol to methyl thioacetate is D3Keq = 0.965, and the corresponding effect for addition of methoxide ion to methyl thioacetate wherein three waters are hydrogen bonded to the carbonyl oxyanion is D3Keq = 1.086. Neither of these calculated isotope effects is as inverse as the experimental beta-deuterium isotope effect for acetylcholinesterase-catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine, D3kE = 0.90š0.03. Structural comparisons show that the water-solvated methoxide adduct of methyl thioacetate is more expanded than is the neutral methanol addition adduct, and suggest that the degree to which the isotope effect is inverse (i.e. less than) is inversely correlated to the degree of expansion of the adduct. A similar correlation of beta-deuterium and beta-deuterium secondary isotope effects with the degree of expansion of the adducts is found for equilibrium additions of methanol and methoxide ion to acetaldehyde. These computational results suggest that the markedly inverse beta-deuterium isotope effect for the acetylcholinesterase reaction arises from enzymic compression of the transition state.

The effect of replacing iron with transition metals (M = Mn, Cr, Co) on the microstructure of mechanically alloyed Al65 Cu20 Fe15 quasicrystalline powder was examined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy methods. Powders of various compositions were milled in a high-energy planetary ball mill up to 30 hours at a rotation speed 350 rpm using WC milling media. The amount of the fourth additions was constant in all powders and Fe atoms were replaced with Mn, Cr or Co in a 1:1 ratio, while the content of the Al and Cu was selected in two ways: they remained the same as in the initial ternary Al65 Cu20 Fe15 alloy or changed to obtain e/a ratio = 1.75 (optimal for icosahedral quasicrystalline phase). Quasicrystalline phase formed in the quaternary Al65 Cu20 Fe7.5 M7.5 powders, whereas in the second group of compositions only crystalline phases were identified.

Research background: While entrepreneurship in transition economies is the subject of a growing body of literature, the debate on factors influencing entrepreneurial activity in such economies is still incomplete. This paper extends this debate by focusing on the effect of changes in the economic structure on entrepreneurship in Poland. The findings might be supportive for policymakers in pursuing policy aimed at boosting entrepreneurship in a transition economy. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to investigate the extent to which changes in the economic structure impact entrepreneurial activity in Poland. The paper contributes to the literature by providing empirical support to the pending research efforts to recognize entrepreneurship dimensions in a transition economy. Methods: The hypothesis was tested with fixed effects panel regression with robust standard errors. Data were sourced from the Statistics Poland for all Polish NUTS?2 regions for the period 2003?2017. Panel data are balanced and include 3 600 observations. Findings & Value added: This paper extends previous research on factors affecting entrepre-neurial activity in a transition economy by focusing on the importance of changes in the economic structure for new firm creation. The findings provide evidence of the significant value of the service sector in boosting entrepreneurial activity in Poland. The findings might attract attention of policymakers. Fostering structural change towards smart specialization in services should be regarded when constituting programmes supporting entrepreneurship.

Opis:
In the present work using the IR spectroscopy method the effect of ethanol on structural transitions of DNA and polyphosphates under the action of Ca2+ ions in mixed solutions containing ethanol (0-25 vol.%) was studied. It was shown that, on its interaction with Ca2+ ions, in aqueous and mixed solutions DNA becomes transformed into compact form. With the increase of concentration of ethanol the degree of Ca2+-induced DNA compactisation rises. It was found that, in mixed solutions containing ethanol, Ca2+-induced DNA compactisation depends not only on the solution's dielectric permeability but also on the solution structure. On stabilisation of the water structure in the presence of low ethanol concentrations a stabilisation of the DNA macromolecule occurs that leads to the increase of the Ca2+ ion concentration necessary for DNA compactisation. Comparison of the effects of ethanol on Ca2+-induced structural transitions in DNA and polyphosphates in mixed solvents permits to suppose that at alcohol concentrations in solution resulting in disruption of the water spatial structure, some peculiarities are observed in the behavior of those molecules whose hydrophobic interactions are essential.

Opis:
Research background: We analyse the added worker effect (AWE) and the discouraged worker effect (DWE) from an aggregate perspective. The first effect refers to an increase in labour force participation in response to a decrease in the wage rate. The second effect refers to the decision by workers who have been unsuccessful in their job search to leave the labour market or to decrease their labour force participation. For our analysis, we use the case of Poland, a country with a persistently low labour force participation rate. Purpose of the article: While previous studies focused on the net of the two effects, we aim to analyse the two effects both separately and simultaneously. We propose a new approach for analysing the two effects. We generalise and model them as resulting from different shocks: (i) the AWE as the result of a negative wage income shock, and (ii) the DWE as the result of a positive job search time shock. The underlying assumption is that both shocks have at least a transitory effect on the labour force participation rate. However, we also track the potential long-lasting effects of these shocks, and we analyse the reactions of gender and age groups to them. While this approach demonstrates the robustness of our results, it also provides the range of the sensitivity, as it shows that there are large differences in the magnitude of the AWE and the DWE for different labour market cohorts. Methods: We use the multivariate unobserved component model to extract the AWE and the DWE, and we then use VAR models, applying sign and exclusion restrictions to model the underlying shocks. We use quarterly data for Poland in 1995-2019. Most of these data come from the Labour Force Survey, while the rest come from Statistics Poland. Findings & value added: In contrast to previous literature, which analysed only the net effect of the two effects, we model the AWE and the DWE separately. Contrary to the findings of previous research, our approach seems to confirm that both effects are simultaneously present in the labour market, and both effects influence the labour force participation rate. Thus, we find that both effects are significant. Specifically, we show that the AWE is stronger, but transitory; while the DWE is weaker, but long-lasting.

Optical response of liquid crystals is very important from the point of view of applications of liquid crystals in display and data storage devices. Experiments have shown that UV rays incident on nematic liquid crystals doped with photoactive azo compounds lower the nematic isotropic transition temperature $(T_{NI})$. This is attributed to the transformation of photoactive trans isomer to cis isomer due to UV rays. We have earlier developed a mean field model involving molecular explanation for two lengths in which the mutual orientation of near neighbor molecules changes from an antiparallel to a parallel configuration as the temperature lowered. In this paper, this model is extended to include the length change from trans to cis isomer. The calculated values of change in $T_{NI}$ qualitatively agree with experimental trends.

A series of epoxy networks with molecular weight between crosslinks (Mc) ranging from 117 to 508 g/mol were investigated by employing as DSC and DMA methods and compression testing over a broad range of test temperatures (from 20 to 120°C) and strain rates (from 0.0208 to 20.8 min–1). Mechanical characteristics vs. testing temperature and strain rate developed in relation to working conditions of EPY compound applied for machine foundation chocks as well as effect of crosslinking on glass transition temperature (Tg) presented in this paper let to find out the effect of molecular architecture composed chiefly by Mc on the thermal and mechanical properties that govern yield behaviour of the material. The investigations carried out in a.m. ranges of testing temperatures and strain rates showed that whichever change of Mc is related to the change in crosslink density causing relative shift in the Tg of the compound. However, a sensitivity of the polymer material on changes in strain rate falls down with growth of testing temperature. Obtained results prove that yielding in EPY compound can be examined in categories of the Eyring’s plastic flow model in which yielding is described.
