Tworzenie nazwisk i imion w języku chińskim kieruje się odmiennymi regułami niż na Zachodzie. Sama kategoria „imienia” i „nazwiska” jest pewną kalką zachodniej koncepcji nazw osobowych nakładaną na język chiński. Zarówno tworzenie imion (名字 míngzì), jak i nazwisk (姓氏 xìngshì) oraz pseudonimów (号 hào) ma swoją tradycję. Chińczycy używają ok. 200 nazwisk i nieskończonej liczby imion. W tworzeniu osobowych nazw własnych istotnym elementem jest obraz znaku, który niesie ze sobą treści określające nazywaną osobę, a nie jedynie fonetyka. „Konwertowanie” imion i nazwisk europejskich na chińskie za pomocą fonetyka prowadzić może do szeregu nieporozumień znaczeniowych. Obraz znaku często komunikuje treści związane z charakterem, wrażliwością, pragnieniami, osobowością. Zostało to ukazane na przykładzie nazw Romana Malka (馬雷凱 Mǎ Léikǎi) i Dariusza Klejnowskiego-Różyckiego (柯達理 Kē Dálǐ).
Creating names in Chinese is guided by rules different than in the West. The very category of a “name” and a “surname” is a kind of a carbon copy of the Western concept of personal names, applied to the Chinese. Both the formation of names (名字 míngzì) and surnames (姓氏 xìngshì) as well as nicknames (hào 号) has its own tradition. The Chinese use about 200 surnames and an infinite number of names. While creating personal names – the character image is an important element which carries the contents of defining a person called in a specific way, not only the phonetics. The “converting” of the European names into Chinese, using phonetics, can lead to a series of misunderstandings in meaning. The character image often communicates content related to the nature, sensitivity, desires and person’s personality. This has been shown on the example of Roman Malek (马雷凯 Mǎ Léikǎi) and Dariusz Klejnowski-Różycki (柯达 理 Kē Dálǐ).

Zarówno porównania, jak i metafory zawierające nazwy własne pełnią ważne funkcje stylistyczne, mają wpływ na walory artystyczne, estetyczne tekstów. Ale prócz tego mają równie ważną rolę semantyczną. Wzbogacają warstwę treściową utworów o skojarzenia związane z nazwami i ich denotatami, z całą szeroko pojętą kulturą i historią, do której się te nazwy odwołują, i do wartości ideowych, które się pod nimi kryją. Pod warunkiem, że potrafimy je właściwie odczytać.
In the article we can see ordered and discussed specific names that have been used by Juliusz Słowacki in comparisons and metaphors. Studying of the texts proved that such names (personal and geographic) occur more often in comparisons, usually in the comparing section. The personal and geographic names used by the poet can be found in both Old and New Testament, while the personal names occur much more often than the geographic ones. The same specific names also occur in terminological metaphors, far less frequent. The discussed comparisons and metaphors, beside the aesthetic function, perform also an important semantic role - they enrich the content layer of the composition with associations related to broadly comprehended concepts of culture and history to which they refer, and to idealistic values hidden underneath.

The editor rounds up the discussion between Tadeusz Ciecierski and Leopold Hess by pointing out that their conclusions are not as opposed as they are trying to show. On the contrary, on some interpretation one may even suggest that both views can convergently approach to some picture of the semantics of proper names. Roughly, the interpretation is that historical form of the debate about proper names has some drawbacks (as Hess points out) that could be mended if shifted to the problem of nominal use (as Ciecierski would have it).

The aim of the paper is to reveal and criticize some of the hidden assumptions of the discussion on the nature of proper names. Those assumptions work in favor of the New Theory of Reference (NTR), which in fact seems more plausible than it should, were the assumptions made explicit. Three theses, it is argued, are assumed with no proof by all sides of the proper names debate: (1) proper names refer to their objects in a different way than common names do; (2) proper names are rigid designators; (3) "we know what we say", i.e. the meaning of a sentence is identical to some cognitive content that is associated with it by the speaker. It is shown that the main source of plausibility of those assumptions, which serve as premises in arguments for the NTR, is the NTR itself.

The article discusses the problem of place, role, meaning and functions of proper names in post-modern advertising texts. The description and analysis proposed herein concern anthroponyms and geonyms. The presentation of the material for analysis, taken from the mass media in the years from 2010–2013, was divided into three thematic groups: 1) authentic anthroponyms in the advertising text; 2) non-authentic anthroponyms (artificial names invented by copywriters) as a persuasive advertising component; 3) geonyms in the consumerist communications space. The issues discussed have been divided into problem categories in order to present the material for analysis more clearly, and to highlight the complexity of this process. The problematic aspects have been described within the context of post-modern changes in the identity of language and communication.

This descriptive review presents proper names from the perspective of brain science. It contains the characteristics of individual groups of proper nouns (and common nouns for comparison) and takes account of their neurobiological background. This makes it possible to confirm many opinions on the status of proper names reported by linguists. The baker and baker paradox and the so-called double dissociation in the search of proper names and common names are discussed in order to confirm (at least in part) the thesis that proper names and common nouns are searched for in the mental lexicon independently of each other. The author also presents the characteristics of proper names to make a thesis about the uniqueness of this class of lexemes. It becomes clear that they are more difficult to learn, especially in patients with neurological deficits, and it takes healthy individuals longer to recall them than to search for common names. Moreover, the recollection of names is associated with more phonological mistakes and is often accompanied by the tip-of-the-tongue syndrome (TOT syndrome), which becomes most evident in elderly patients. The article also presents individual adaptive compensation techniques in impaired naming of objects and faces (e.g. aphasia), which facilitate the recreation of categories within the mental proper name lexicon.

Opis:
T he present paper examines the issue of conceptual metaphors related to proper names. According to the Lakoff/Johnson’s theory, two types of metaphor are sustained – orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors. The author shows how proper names may be a part of source domains, as well as how they function within the new metaphorical expressions. Some examples from the Polish lexicon are discussed, e.g. the names of Himalaya, Mount Everest, Marian Ditch, Waterloo and the like. Some conceptual metaphors, such as the figuration of the state as a human being, and other sub-metaphors which can be derived from this, are also examined. Proper names may function within the metaphorical expressions due to their specificity, and because their denotata are closer to the human experience.

The article briefly presents the history of the absorption of foreign proper names by the Polish language. The introduction outlines the key properties that differentiate proper names from common names. Then the three chief periods in the history of Polish are presented, along with their typical, dominant ways of absorbing proper names. These periods coincide with the periodization proposed by Z. Klemensiewicz (Old-Polish, Middle-Polish, New-Polish periods). The author discusses finally the main modes of absorbing proper names: phonetic-morphologic adaptation (e.g. Piotr, Agnieszka, Szymbark), adideation and reinterpretation (e.g. Bakchus – Beczkoś), translation (e.g. Felix – Szczęsny, Parva – Mała), transposition (e.g. Milano, Trier, Inez).

Opis:
The article expands and modifies the contexts in which literary onomastics currently operates. This strictly interdisciplinary field of research, primarily originating from linguistics, has sought out the contexts that triggered non-obvious meanings of names readable in the artistic work from the outset. The references were varied – stylistics, textology, philosophy, structural poetics. All of them significantly enriched onomastic nalyses, leaving some fundamental sense of insufficiency at the same time. That is the reason why we propose the project of the connection between literary onomastics and — now extremely extensive — theoretical thought. The article is not the end of this discussion, but rather an exploratory study and the beginning of scientific research. Consequently, there is no one ordering and chronological concept with a clear conclusion, but the main aim is to show the analysis of the claims relevant for further research. Therefore, several concepts of theoreticians interested in proper names in literature were discussed (far from a common phenomenon in this case). From the research projects analyzed, including among others: U. Eco, J.F. Lyo tard, P. de Man, there emerges a clear conviction of the need to end the search for a referential, texted name. In this place it refers, on the one hand, to itself, establishing its own unreal meaning (image-forming, phonic, intertextual); on the other, it concerns the author’s system of naming (and beyond), which is also an epistemological concept. The starting point of these diagnoses was the thoroughly interpreted self-analysis of artistic works made by Marcel Proust; for further analysis, the thesis of Walter Benn Michaels was also employed, which brings interest in proper names from literature to the domain of artistic experiences. The conducted analysis (designing future literary onomastic research) leads to the final conclusion that the proper name indicates the essence itself, the arche of our existence.

Opis:
Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce funkcjonowania nazw własnych w kontekście społeczno-komunikacyjnym. Podkreśla konieczność rozdzielenia procesów tworzenia i funkcjonowania onimów, ze względu na to, że w użyciu nazwa własna obrasta w nowe konotacje, staje się przyczyną generowania nowych motywacji, które są tworzone z reguły podświadomie. Te motywacje ujawniają się w postaci tzw. reinterpretacji nazewniczych zewnętrznych i wewnętrznych. Pierwsze dotyczą przekształceń dokonywanych w świadomości użytkownika, a zatem bez naruszenia formy nazewniczej. Mechanizm drugiego typu przekształceń pozwala na dokonywanie zmian w obrębie leksykalnym onimu.
This paper deals with proper names functioning issues in the social-communicative context. It underlines the necessity to divide creating and functioning names processes, because while using the proper names receive new connotations, and becomes a reason for generating new motivations, which are usually created subconsciously. These motivations come to the light in the shape of so called outward and inward onomastic (name) reinterpretations. The first concern transformations taking place in the user’s awareness, thus without reshaping a name. Mechanism of the other type of transformations allows making changes within lexical name.

The paper’s objective is to analyse two Italian translations of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel Children of the Soil. The first translator was a Neapolitan named Federigo Verdinois, who worked with Sienkiewicz’s permission. The second translator, however, remains anonymous due to the lack of Sienkiewicz’s consent to translate his novel, which in northern Italy (Milano, Florence) had been released in some successful editions that profited only the publishers. Although Verdinois translated Children of the Soil from the Russian version, his work, compared to the second translation, can be recognised as better in evaluation. The analysis of the anonymous translation suggests that the novel was translated hurriedly, negligently (editorial issues), and was severely abridged, which caused a significant decrease in its literary value in comparison to the original.

This article presents the results of an analysis covering a portion of the vocabulary found in Wacław Potocki’s literary works. The examination of the lexical structure of the poet’s writings was limited to the biblical proper names coming from the three-volume edition of the poet’s Dzieła (Works) (Kukulski 1987). The material was excerpted using the corpus method and the Electronic Corpus of 17th- and 18th-century Polish Texts (until 1772). The aim of this article is to divide the collected biblisms according to the onomastic classification and to discuss the findings of their functional analysis. The Bible was a significant source of creative and ideological inspiration for the 17th-century author, which was reflected in the presented collection of proper names, with the anthroponyms that fulfilled allusive and content functions winning the greatest share. The study is concluded with a compilation of the outcomes of the comparative analysis performed with regard to the frequency of biblical proper names, certified in W. Potocki’s Dzieła and in the corpus of Baroque texts.

Powieść Ewy Nowackiej Małgosia contra Małgosia jest przykładem powieści powojennej. Został w niej zastosowany dwoisty charakter przestrzeni czasowej, powodujący dwoistość świata przedstawionego. Użyte w powieści nazwy podporządkowane są głównemu zamierzeniu artystycznemu, tj. przedstawieniu miejsca i czasu akcji jako jednej, spójnej rzeczywistości. Warstwa semantyczna i konotacyjna nazw własnych, a także wszelkie nawiązania intersemiotyczne, dają możliwość wielopłaszczyznowej interpretacji literackich onimów oraz sprawiają, że świat przedstawiony w powieści jest bardzo bogaty, głęboko osadzony w tle historycznym i kulturowym. Nazwy użyte są w licznych funkcjach stylistycznych. Funkcjonują w kulturowo-komunikacyjnym obszarze użycia języka. Ewa Nowacka, stosując odpowiednie nazwy własne, stworzyła harmonijną literacką całość.
The novel by Ewa Nowacka, Małgosia versus Małgosia, is an example of a post-war novel. There has been used the dual nature of time space causing the duality of the world presented. The names used in the novel are subordinate to the main artistic intention, ie. the presentation of the place and time of action as a single, coherent reality. The semantic and connotative layers of the proper nouns as well as all the intersemiotic references give the possibility of multifaceted interpretation of literary onyms and make the world depicted in the novel very rich and deeply rooted in the historical and cultural background. The names are used in a number of stylistic features. They function in a cultural-communicative area of the language use. Ewa Nowacka, using appropriate proper nouns, creates a harmonious literary whole.

The members of Karaim community in Halicz used to have two, sometimes even three first names: a religious name, called the shem ha-kodesh (holy name), a secular name called kinnui and a name in a diminutive form. The religious name was a Hebrew name. It generally appears in connection with religious observances, for instance on a tombstone. The secular name appears in civil documents (contracts, school certificates etc.). Diminutive form, sometimes even not connected in an apparent way to other two names, was used in everyday life. Karaims from Halicz had a strong tradition that mandated that a baby be named a deceased relative. New-born child was typically named for a grandfather or a grandmother. If the grandparents were still alive, a baby would be named after other relatives, great-grandparents or siblings of one of the parents. Child could also be given the same name as a sibling who had previously died. As a result of this practice we find a definite group of names (18 for males and 12 for females), staying in use in Halicz community and repeating every other generation within families.

Opis:
Proper names should be recognized as a significant factor of a literary character and in broader perspective of bringing closer the novel problems. The main novel character, Leon Płoszowski, percepts and sense the world through the self-analysis and analysis of the reality surrounding him. Proper names above all emphasize two features: erudition and cosmopolitism of the novel character. His formation and contact through the years with high culture do not help him to put the world – both: one inside and one outside him – in order, but all of this remains a stigma in a form of association everything with art, literature, philosophy etc. It is confirmed in the novel by numerous proper names. The fact that proper names in basic for Leon Płoszowski characteristics places in the novel apply mostly to the past, causes that they form sort of „onomastic museum”.

The author presents a semantic and structural analysis of several puzzling toponymies from the south-east Lublin region. They are the following names of villages: Teniatyska, Podrusów, and parts of villages and hamlets: Sikliwce, Rebizanty, Koszele. Probabilistic research, studies on their history and settlement, a reconstruction of the starting forms of toponymies have made the author to arrive at the following conclusions: Teniatyska is a cultural name connected with the Ukrainian appelative teneta. Primarily, it most probably defined a place where traps or nets were laid. It cannot be excluded that such a place was a water mill of which mention has been made in the notes. Another interpretation allows for the starting form Teniatyn. Then the personal name would be included in the toponym Teniata (Pol. Tenięta). A change in the from of the toponym Teniatyn > Teniatyszcze would be linked with the establishment of a new settlement in place of the deserted one, once inhabited. Podrusów refers to the topographic or water name Rusiec, one that is analogous to the names of the proximate settlements, cf. Susiec. Sikliwce is an ethnic name, most probably primarily referring to a water environment - a near-by stream. With, the name would change its category from the category of ethnic names to the family ones. The process of anthroponimization had taken place in another local name of that area - i.e. Rebiznaty, primarily, Koszele is a typical family name from the personal name Koszel, and the latter is derived from kosz (basket), “a vessel woven from straw and straw.”

Opracowanie dotyczy możliwości zastosowania instrumentarium onomastyki do badań nad obrazowością języka staropolskiego. Zaobserwowano potencjał nazw własnych pomocny w opisie złożoności średniowiecznej polszczyzny, co jest zwłaszcza ważne ze względu na ubóstwo ilościowe i tematyczne zachowanych z tej epoki tekstów polskojęzycznych. Nazwy własne ze względu na konotacje semantyczne i wiele funkcji, jakie pełnią, można poddać analizie w różnych kontekstach i użyciach. Autor spróbował wskazać kilka wybranych problemów dotyczących związków onimów z obrazowością języka staropolskiego. Obserwacje były prowadzone zarówno z uwzględnieniem potencjału semantycznego nazw własnych, jak i ich funkcji we współtworzeniu różnych dyskursów i stylów.
The work concerns the possibility of using onomastic instruments for researching the imagery of Old-Polish. One can observe the potential of proper names that is useful in describing the complexity of Medieval Polish, especially that there are few texts written in Polish remaining from the Middle Ages. Proper names, due to their semantic potential of connotations and their many functions, may be analyzed in various contexts, which is helpful in the analysis of medieval language. The author attempts to highlight a few selected problems concerning the relationship between onyms and the imagery of the Old-Polish language. The observations were conducted taking into account the semantic potential of proper names as well as their function in co-creating various discourses and styles.

Role-playing games (RPG) provide a great opportunity to research creative word-formation. This article concentrateson RPG systems and represented worlds as well as proper nouns that can be found in them. The author presents the history of RPG, explains the core elements of the games (such as Game Master or RPG session) and compares the most popular and important systems. The article also explains how players create the names for their characters. The analysis is based on the examples taken from the Fallathan’s Chronicles game.
Artykuł dotyczy systemów RPG, światów przedstawionych oraz onimii w grach tego typu. Przedłożono nie tylko historię gier role-playing, lecz także opisano najbardziej znane, a zarazem kluczowe systemy RPG. W artykule wyjaśniono również, czym są gry RPG, jakie elementy składają się na rozgrywkę, np. kim jest Mistrz Gry lub co to jest sesja. Na przykładzie imion z gry Kroniki Fallathanu autorka wskazała, w jaki sposób gracze tworzą miana swoich postaci.

Nazewnictwo Kronik Jakuba Wędrowycza związane jest z fikcją mimetyczną, realistycznym nurtem onimii literackiej i z poetyką realizmu magicznego. Kroniki, jako przykład popularnej literatury współczesnej, podlegają kategorii groteski, wyzyskują czarny humor, łączą realizm ze zjawiskami nadnaturalnymi, preferują aktualność zdarzeń i odniesienia intertekstualne. Realistyczna warstwa onimiczna pełni w zbiorze swe typowe funkcje: nazwy geograficzne lokalizują akcję na pograniczu polsko-ukraińskim (Wojsławice, Stary Majdan, Uchanie), pełnią też funkcję lokalizacji w czasie (Związek Radziecki, RFN), semantyczną (wąwóz Szubienica). Nawy osobowe oraz etnonimy również są typowe, ich struktura podlega zasadzie prawdopodobieństwa, pełnią pragmatyczne funkcje w dziele literackim w oficjalnej lub potocznej odmianie językowej (por. Szkopy, Niemcy, Semen Paczenko, Józef/Józwa, Maciuś, Skorliński). Nazwy własne Kronik to formy uwikłane w gry językowe, groteskowe, humorystyczne, przełamujące nastrój grozy i tajemniczości w obliczu działań i charakterystyki głównego bohatera, Jakuba Wędrowycza.
The nomenclature in The Chronicles of Jakub Wędrowycz is connected with the mimetic fiction, the realistic trend in literary onymy, and with the poetics of magical realism. The Chronicles, as an example of contemporary popular literature, falls into the category of grotesque, it exploits black humor and combines realism with supernatural occurrences; it also favors current events and intertextualities. The realistic onymic layer performs its typical functions: geographic names place the events on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland (Wojsławice, Stary Majdan, Uchanie), locate them in time (The Soviet Union, FRG), and perform the semantic function as well (Gallows gorge). Personal names and ethnonyms are also typical, their structure is governed by the probability rules, and they serve the pragmatic functions in the literary work in both the official and the colloquial language (compare Szkopy [Krauts], Germans, Semen Paczenko, Józef/Józwa, Maciuś [diminutive], Skorliński). Proper names in The Chronicles engage in word plays and they can be grotesque, humorous; they lighten the atmosphere of horror and mystery especially in the context of the protagonist’s—Jakub Wędrowycz’s doings and his characteristics.

This paper analyses sixteenth-century Polish anthroponymia as preserved in the documents of Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki, the archbishop of Gniezno. The onomastic material has been depicted in the context of the structure (form) of diplomas. They show Polish anthroponymy against the backdrop of medieval events they describe, a fact that constitutes the onomastic interpretation of official texts under study. The sources used here have shown the spontaneous changes in the manner of naming people, starting from one-word nomination, inherited from the pre-Slavonic epoch, through a more extensive system of identification by means of non-nominal onomastic elements derived from appelate, anthroponymic, and toponymic forms that are not surnames. The question of the way to identify person in the Middle Ages and its reflection in office documents may determine the direction for further studies on Polish anthroponymy.

The article is about the metaphorical usage of proper names and their place beyond the language system. Proper names quite frequently appear in modern (Polish and Russian) journalistic texts as a part of metaphors. These are, for example, such expressions as polski Hitler, Гитлер без вермахта, Himalaje wszelkiego zakłamania, “гималаи” пивных и водочных бутылок, Nowy Jork we wschodnim stylu, подмосковный Версаль, katolicki Gorbaczow, этакий черногорский Обломов, nasz Leonardo da Vinci, сегодняшние Корчагины, Мересьевы, Гагарины and others. A name loses its system properties in figurative usage. That means the name does not denote or distinguish a particular person or place that was originally designated by it, but begins to be seen as a meaningful unit. Metaphors with proper names in their structure are created from connotational meaning of a proper name, which is a given social group’s unlimited knowledge of the object that the name refers to, in its basic use.

Battle of Brenna or battle of old Bottocks? War and battle names in Polish fantasy novels Proper names are a very important element of language in every literary work, especially in fantasy novels. They compose a map of reality unknown to the reader but they also tell the story of imagined world. Chrononyms are an example of proper names which appear in fantasy novels. They are names of historical events. Names of wars and battles are often used in books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, Ewa Białołęcka, Anna Brzezińska, Feliks W. Kres and Krzysztof Piskorski. W artykule przedstawione są wyznaczniki gatunkowe tzw. fantasy humorystycznej oraz analiza nazewnictwa występującego w tego typu utworach. Nazwy własne (antroponimy, toponimy) oraz deskrypcje jednostkowe pełniące funkcję nazw własnych posiadają różne źródła ekspresywności, np. naruszanie zamkniętości klasy imion, wyzyskiwanie humorystycznych apelatywów w podstawach onimów, podkreślanie obcości leksykalnej nazw własnych, paronomazja, ekspresja fonetyczna itp. Takie nomina propria pełnią najczęściej funkcje semantyczną, ekspresywną i intertekstualną poprzez odwołania do nazw własnych z innych tekstów literackich oraz ich modyfikacje. Znaczenie nazwy własnej najczęściej odczytać można w kontekście, w którym nazwa ta się pojawia. Utwory zaliczane do fantasy humorystycznej zawierają ciekawy typ nazewnictwa, łączący wyznaczniki kilku nurtów onomastyki stylistycznej: realistycznego, semantycznego, ekspresywnego i fantastyczno- baśniowego.
The article discusses features of comic fantasy and analyses names occurring in the texts representative of the genre. Proper names (anthroponyms, toponyms) and individual descriptions that serve the function of proper names have different sources of expressiveness. They include violating of the confinement of classes of personal names, using humorous appellatives in the stems of onyms, emphasizing foreign origins of proper names, and phonetic expression. Nomina propia discussed in the article most often serve the semantic, expressive or intertextual function through references to proper names in other literary texts and their modifications. The meaning of a given proper name can be usually understood in the context. The names in comic fantasy texts are extremely interesting since they combine features of different stylistic onomasty: realistic, semantic, expressive and fantastic.

This paper is an attempt at describing proper names of underground salt excavations. Among the analysed terms, the most documented ones are commemorative names, which are based on anthroponyms – surnames and first names. A less numerous group is represented by names related to the location of the objects, point to their functions in the mine, or refer to physiographic features. Moreover, there are names of cultural or metaphorical character. These terms are varied both in terms of motivation and level of formality. The material for analysis comes from the texts of Instrukcje górnicze dla żup krakowskich z XVI–XVIII wieku.

Opis:
Jadwiga Waniakowa (2012) twierdzi, iż wraz z nazwą kwiatów wędrowały wierzenia, tak jak miało to miejsce w przypadku „niezapominajki”. Bogactwo nazw, skrywane tajniki i wędrówki myśli ludzkiej, nawiązanie do kontekstów politycznych i historycznych oraz właściwości leczniczych i zjawisk okultystycznych sprawiają, że symbol kwiatu staje się pojęciem wielowymiarowym. Niniejszy referat ma na celu zobrazowanie sposobu postrzegania rzeczywistości przez symbolikę rośliny odzwierciedloną w nazwach. W szczególności, punkt wyjścia stanowią legendy i wierzenia Słowian. Głównym założeniem jest wstępna weryfikacja, czy w języku polskim słowiańskie skojarzenia związane z rośliną odzwierciedlone są w nazwach roślin oraz czy, tym samym, nastąpiła migracja wierzeń słowiańskich poprzez migrację nazw do kultury anglosaskiej. Fitonimy przedstawione zostały z perspektywy diachronicznej i synchronicznej. Nieodzownym elementem poszukiwań oraz wyzwaniem jest również podjęta próba tłumaczenia zwyczajowych nazw dawnych. Dociekania badawcze rozpoczęły się od analizy nazwy „wyżlin większy”/Antirrhinum majus L. Polska nazwa rośliny („wyżlin”) oznaczająca dawniej „pysk zwierzęcy, szczególnie psi albo cielęcy obrany ze skóry i mięsa”[1] odzwierciedlona jest w dawnych nazwach angielskich takich jak Dog’s-mouth [pysk psi] czy Calf’s-mouth [pysk cielęcy](Nowick 2015: 36). Waniakowa (2012) advocates migration of plant names together with associated folk beliefs as in the case of ‘forget-me-not’. The abundance of names, concealed secrets and wandering nature of human mind, reference to political contexts and historical backgrounds as well as healing properties and occult phenomena render the symbol of a flower multidimensional. The paper is supposed to depict the manner in which the reality is perceived via the plant’s symbolism embodied in its name. In particular, these are Slavic legends and beliefs analyzed as semantic motivation of the plant’s denomination process that constitute the paper’s main thrust. The key assumption, however, is initial verification whether Slavic associations with plants are reflected in their names in the Polish language, and whether the migration of Slavic beliefs via migration of names into the Anglo-Saxon culture has taken place. Phytonyms are presented from a diachronic and synchronic perspective. Further, an integral element of the study shall be an attempt to translate old and contemporary Polish and English plant names.

Przedmiotem artykułu są zagadnienia związane z tekstowymi użyciami propriów jako nośników wartościowania i emocjonalności w listach Joachima Lelewela adresowanych do krewnych oraz przyjaciół i znajomych. Eksplicytnymi wykładnikami funkcji emotywno-ekspresywnej są odpowiednio nacechowane formanty słowotwórcze oraz morfemy fleksyjne. Emotywizację i aksjologizację sygnalizują ponadto nazwy własne umiejscowione w sąsiedztwie określeń wartościujących. Kontekstualnemu uwartościowaniu propriów służą między innymi wypowiedzi wykrzyknikowe, powtórzenia i nagromadzenie onimów. Wyraźnym sygnałem subiektywizacji wypowiedzi są nazwy własne w użyciu metaforycznym i metonimicznym oraz onimy wpisane w strukturę porównania. Niekiedy nośnikiem emocjonalności i wartościowania może być znaczenie asocjacyjne propriów.
The article’s subject is related to the textual use of propria as carriers of evaluation and emotionality in Joachim Lelewel’s letters addressed to relatives, friends and acquaintances. Explicit exponents of the emotive-expressive function are appropriately marked with word-formation formants and inflectional morphemes. Emotivization and axiologization are signalled by proper names and their location in the vicinity of evaluative terms. Contextual valuation of propria is served, among others, by exclamation marks, repetitions and accumulation of onyms. Proper names in metaphorical and metonymic use and onyms inscribed in the comparison structure clearly signify the statements subjectivisation. Sometimes the associative meaning of propria may be the carrier of emotionality and valuation.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the word formation of proper names which are used in the texts of advertisements. The analyzed examples are drawn from the texts of advertisements found on television, radio, press, the Internet etc. which were produced at the end of 20 th century and the beginning of 21 st century. The article analyses two categories of these proper names: word formations which are used in contemporary Polish language (f.e. Robuś, Marysia, Stefcia, Kasia, Jasio, Krzyś, Rozalka, Basia, Bartuś, Sabinka, Julka, Karinka, Tomek, Adaś, Goździkowa) and neologisms f.e. Zapobiegalska, Zarażalski, Kichalska, Krzywonogi, Przyklapiusz, Musztarderowie, TurboDymoMan, SuperEs, Zozolka, Łazienkowo). The analysis conducted in the article proves that both types of proper names, which are word formation derivatives, appear relatively often in the texts of advertisements. This is the case since they are easy to form (advertisements take the majority of them from usage) and can perform many functions, which advertisements willingly use for their own needs. Proper names that are word formation derivatives and just proper names serve mainly as an assessment as they connote the values appreciated both culturally and socially and the values attributed to proper names are carried on the advertised products. Proper names which are derivatives create a desired picture of advertised products more expressively than other proper names, thanks to their clear word formation structure. Moreover, they expose their commercial assets so they fully use and at the same time cocreate the system of values of consumption culture.

The article is a synthetic discussion of the discourse analysis method from the onomastic perspective. In our opinion, proper names are not merely linguistic signs - they are also social constructs, often highly politicised, forming various textual and discursive relations. Names understood in that way are often crucial to (re)constructing  social reality. Thanks to the methodological orientation used, names can be a good tool for identification, discovery and interpretation of important aspects of discourse. In our opinion, the use of particular names is not random, but it helps us discover objects vital for the analysis of axiology and ideology of discourse. The method we propose should provide tools used in analyses of all onymic spheres (name categories). The text also highlights the theoretical framework of the method and a proposal of a research procedure in onomastic disourse analysis (ODA) is shown. Moreover, examples of analysis domain are indicated: discourse types and name categories related to them.
Celem artykułu jest syntetyczne omówienie metody analizy dyskursu w perspektywie onomastycznej. W naszym ujęciu nazwy własne to nie tylko znaki językowe – to również konstrukty społeczne, często silnie zideologizowane, wchodzące w rozliczne relacje tekstowe i dyskursywne. Nazwy tak pojmowane odgrywają często kluczową rolę w (re)konstruowaniu rzeczywistości społecznej. Dzięki takiej orientacji metodologicznej mogą one stanowić dobre narzędzie do identyfikacji, ujawnienia i interpretacji kluczowych aspektów dyskursu. Użycie nazw – takich a nie innych – nie jest w naszym rozumieniu przypadkowe, ale odsłania ważne dla aksjologii i ideologii danego dyskursu obiekty. Proponowana przez nas metodologia powinna zapewnić instrumentarium służące do analiz wszystkich sfer onimicznych (kategorii nazewniczych). W tekście naszkicowane jest teoretyczne tło metody, a także pokazana propozycja postępowania badawczego w ramach onomastycznej analizy dyskursu (OAD). Wskazane zostały również przykładowe domeny analiz: typy dyskursów i przyporządkowane im kategorie nazewnicze.

The article discusses the issue of proper names defined as symptoms of culture. The first part is of a theoretical character and develops the theory of symptomatology of culture in the context of semiotics (Ch. Peirce), psychology and psychoanalysis (S. Freud and J. Lacan), and onomastics. Symptomatology of culture is a practice of interpreting a certain group of texts of culture and extracting common qualitative traits within them. This is especially in the case of those traits specific to them and often encountered, which could testify to particular serious and deeply-rooted social phenomena leading to their appearance. In the empirical part the author presents a way of using (onymic) symptomatology in practice to research modern culture. She uses the examples of popular psychological and auto-therapeutic guidebooks and treats them as linguistic symptomatic forms of the most significant linguistic and cultural phenomena along with their social causes and functions which are often dysfunctional or abnormal in character. The analysis comprises the most typical conceptual and syntactic constructions encountered in the group.

Tekst dotyczy nazw własnych polskich formacji policyjnych, ich symboliki, semantyki, etymologii i sposobu zapisywania tych nazw (ortografi i). Artykuł zawiera zatem treści historyczne i językoznawcze. Odbudowa polskiej państwowości w roku 1918 pozwoliła na powołanie policji jako typowej organizacji. Sejm przyjął ustawę powołującą nową, jednolitą formację policyjną (Policję Państwową) 24 lipca 1919 r. Była to pierwsza polska formacja policyjna, przetrwała ona formalnie aż do 1944 r. W powojennej Polsce tradycyjne funkcje (zadania) policji przejęła (wykonywała) Milicja Obywatelska. Wbrew nazwie własnej formacja ta nie uosabiała idei aktywności obywatelskiej na rzecz dobra wspólnego, le cz była organem państwowym, scentralizowanym, zhierarchizowanym, negującym zasadę apolityczności i powiązanym z aparatem bezpieczeństwa. Współczesna Policja jest spadkobierczynią nie tylko Policji Państwowej, lecz także wszystkich wcześniejszych polskich formacji policyjnych. Podsumowując, artykuł przybliża i upamiętnia ważne momenty naszej historii, dając wyobrażenie o zmieniających się realiach codziennej służby a także o roli policji w różnych formach ustrojowych.

The presented paper argues the importance of proper names in fantasy and science fiction in general but focuses primarily on the highly successful Star Wars franchise. Worldwide popularity of George Lucas’ creation resulted in the need of translation of Star Wars materials to other languages. Translators were given a task, among others, of creating a glossary of proper names essential to the overall story, including such as Jedi and Sith. This paper is an analysis of translation of these proper names in Star Wars novels released before the year 2000 in German (61), Polish (39) and Russian (18). It presents all variants proposed by the translators before the final one was canonized and comments on their choices and used strategies. The analysis shows that while German and Polish translators usually retained use of previously established versions, Russian translators proved to be less consequent in this matter.
Niniejszy artykuł poświęcono istotności nazw własnych w fantastyce na przykładzie amerykańskiej franczyzy Gwiezdne Wojny. Światowa popularność stworzonego przez George’a Lucasa uniwersum zrodziła zapotrzebowanie na tłumaczenie towarzyszących mu materiałów. Jednym z zadań tłumaczy było stworzenie glosariusza nazw własnych – kluczowych dla fabuły, wielokrotnie powracających, takich jak np. Jedi oraz Sith. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę tłumaczeń wymienionych nazw własnych w powieściach z serii Gwiezdne Wojny opublikowanych w językach niemieckim (61), polskim (41) i rosyjskim (19) przed 2000 rokiem. Zawiera on wszystkie zaproponowane w nich przez tłumaczy warianty, komentuje ich wybory i wykorzystane strategie. Analiza pokazuje, że podczas gdy tłumacze niemieccy i polscy z reguły wykorzystywali zaproponowane wcześniej wersje, o tyle rosyjscy postępowali pod tym względem mniej konsekwentnie.

The paper is concerned with the problem of proper name-functions in Polish reportages of the 20th century. The analysis is focused on diachronic changes. For the research, two periods of polish history were chosen: soc-realism and post-socialism epochs. The observation of onomastic material proved that culture had a significant impact on proper name functions in reportage understood as a dynamic and polyphonic speech genre. Furthermore, the proper name as a specific language sign is undoubtedly an important element which informs of the cultural and social factors, customs and traditions of a particular period. The results of this study confirm the benefits of contextualizing onomastic research within a broadly understood cultural background.

In the article, I discuss the names of disco polo bands (disco polo is a kind of Polish pop music) and songs. I analyse the names from the linguistic and cultural perspective. I also highlight the external contexts. I also treat the onomastic layer of disco polo as a sign of cognitive conceptualisations, being the basis of the creation of images of the world in the lyrics.

Przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule jest polski zaimek ten występujący przy nazwach własnych w kontekstach w rodzaju ten Martynowski, ten Marek, ten Gdańsk, ten Giewont. Ze względu na współwystępowanie w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie dwóch wyrażeń prymarnie pełniących funkcję wykładników referencji szczegółowej określonej można wysunąć hipotezę, że zaimek ten w tego typu układach nie jest użyty referencjalnie, przestaje tym samym być demonstrativum, w związku z czym ma inne niż podstawowe dla niego właściwości językowe. Celem badań podjętych w tym tekście jest określenie językowej specyfiki takich wystąpień operatora ten, w tym odniesienie się do tez dominujących w literaturze specjalistycznej, dotyczących m.in. ekspresywności takich użyć. Wybrane do zbadania połączenia słowa ten z nazwami własnymi zostaną zestawione z nieobligatoryjnymi wystąpieniami tego zaimka przy rzeczownikach (jak np. w zdaniu: Na tym wczorajszym indyku można sobie było zęby połamać).
This article analyses the Polish pronoun ten (‘this’) located next to proper names in contexts such as ten Martynowski, ten Marek, ten Gdańsk, ten Giewont. Due to its occurrence in immediately next to two expressions which primarily function as exponents of specific reference, one can put forward a hypothesis that the investigated pronoun is not applied in its referential function in this type of settings. Thus, it ceases to be a demonstrative pronoun, and assumes linguistic properties other than its basic ones. The aim of this study is to determine the linguistic nature of such occurrences of ten, also in reference to the thesis prevailing in the relevant literature, which, among other aspects, concerns the expressive value of such applications of the pronoun. The combinations of ten with proper names selected for analysis will be juxtaposed with nonobligatory occurrences of this pronoun next to nouns (as, for example, in the sentence: Na tym wczorajszym indyku można sobie było zęby połamać (You could break your teeth on that turkey yesterday).

This paper is a second part of a publication devoted to the level of nomination skills of children aged four to six. Whilst the first part focused on toys: humanoid and not modelled on living beings – this paper examines the naming of animals and plush toys modeled on animals. The author analyses methods used by children to create proper names (chrematonyms) and elements of extralinguistic reality rooted in these names. The influence of socio-cultural factors (age and gender) on the development of naming skills of pre-schoolers is also examined.
Artykuł jest drugą częścią publikacji poświęconej badaniom nad poziomem umiejętności nominacyjnych dzieci w wieku od czterech do sześciu lat. W poprzedniej części skupiono się na zabawkach humanoidalnych oraz zabawkach niewzorowanych na istotach żywych. W niniejszym opracowaniu zbadane zostało nazewnictwo zwierząt oraz pluszowych zabawek wzorowanych na zwierzętach. Przeanalizowano metody tworzenia nazw przez dzieci oraz elementy rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej utrwalone w tych onimach. Zbadano ponadto wpływ czynników społeczno-kulturowych (wieku, płci) na rozwój umiejętności nominacyjnych przedszkolaków.
