Opis:
The present research investigated the effects of short-term musical training on speech recognition in adverse listening conditions in older adults. A total of 30 Kannada-speaking participants with no history of gross otologic, neurologic, or cognitive problems were divided equally into experimental (M = 63 years) and control groups (M = 65 years). Baseline and follow-up assessments for speech in noise (SNR50) and reverberation was carried out for both groups. The participants in the experimental group were subjected to Carnatic classical music training, which lasted for seven days. The Bayesian likelihood estimates revealed no difference in SNR50 and speech recognition scores in reverberation between baseline and followed-up assessment for the control group. Whereas, in the experimental group, the SNR50 reduced, and speech recognition scores improved following musical training, suggesting the positive impact of music training. The improved performance on speech recognition suggests that short-term musical training using Carnatic music can be used as a potential tool to improve speech recognition abilities in adverse listening conditions in older adults.

Opis:
The paper introduces the topic of the Musical Assertiveness Training (MAT), developed in 2014, based on the application of music therapy and mixed arts therapies. The method is based on the latest worldwide achievements in the field of assertiveness training and adopts them for training based on the use of primarily music and art. The MAT-programme is divided into the cycle of twelve music-therapeutic sessions and leads step by step to the basic skills of assertive behaviour. It is designed as a workshop and has been used so far in in the process of educating future pedagogues both as an educational and therapeutic method, supporting the development of emotional, communication and social competences. The article describes the basic concepts of assertiveness and refers to the wider theory from which it originates and to which the innovative training refers such as: the cognitive theory of social learning by Bandura (modelling), the theory of multiple intelligences by H. Gardner and the concept of self-efficacy, self-presentation and self-esteem.

Opis:
The effectiveness of the aesthetic development of high school students in the conditions of a children’s music school directly depends on the application of a certain range of pedagogical principles in the educational process. It was found that pedagogical principles are important guidelines that reflect the general patterns of the process of education and upbringing, determine the requirements for their content, organization and educational methods. They represent a generalized system of requirements that covers all aspects of this process and reflects its results. The article examines the leading principles that are the basis of the process of aesthetic development of high school students in the conditions of a children’s music school: the principle of problematic reflects the consequences of logical and cognitive contradictions as the basis of an educational problem and the driving force of learning, determines the interaction between learning and teaching, the creation of problem situations, the setting and solving the problems; the principle of trust in the subject of education is based on the principles of «humane pedagogy», which ensures the organization of the educational process on the basis of a personal approach to the student, with the approval of him as an active, conscious, equal participant in the educational process, in which he develops on a humane basis personality; when organizing the principle of independent action, it is taken into account that the independent activity of students consists not only in the ability to organize their own mental activity (in which they receive new knowledge), but also in the ability to organize their own behavior, which is connected with the effective organization of their own mental activity; the principle of creativity involves the creation of optimal conditions for realizing the personal potential of schoolchildren; the principle of holistic perception of a musical work helps students understand the essence of each work, find the basic principles of its construction in the musical fabric, and perceive the content of the musical text as a highly organized whole; the principle of dialogue takes into account the following types of dialogic interactions: «author – performer», «teacher (performer) – student (performer)», «listener – performer». It was found that the pedagogical conditions for the aesthetic development of high school students in the conditions of a children’s music school are the subject-developmental environment, which we consider as a dialectical unity of spatial-subject and social components, closely related and mutually conditioned among themselves, where each subject of the educational process carries out its activity, which contributes to cultural identification, the development of aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic sensitivity, and the development of aesthetic activity. The introduction of person-oriented technology into the educational and educational process of a children’s music school is a process of psychological and pedagogical assistance to the child in the formation of his subjectivity, cultural identification, aesthetic consciousness, development of aesthetic sensitivity, development of aesthetic activity.

Opis:
The clear majority of people with a professional or amateur contact with music do not possess absolute pitch and get by perfectly well without it, making use of relative musical pitch. Yet many people dream of also fixing in their memory the actual pitches of the notes of the musical scale, which would effectively give them the chance to recognise and reproduce any chromatic pitch (C, C#, D, D#, etc.) without recourse to a reference note. Unfortunately, it almost always proves too late for them to develop absolute pitch. The question of the factors determining the forming of absolute pitch is still the subject of quite heated discussion. Practically from the outset of the interest in the phenomenon of absolute pitch (i.e. from the second half of the nineteenth century) controversial theories arose regarding its origins. In discussion on the subject, there was a clash of two fundamental views, regarding absolute pitch either as an innate ability or, on the contrary, as an ability that could be acquired at any age. With time, there emerged an increasing number of hypotheses accounting for the origin of absolute pitch: from the theory of the limitless possibility of absolute pitch acquisition through the theories of innate factors and of early learning, to the latest theory that links absolute pitch to tonal languages. The present paper shows the results of the research project on the occurrence of absolute pitch among young people in musical education in Poland (1175 pupils, aged 11-29) carried out in the years 2004-2007. The test results (pitch-naming tests) supported by the data from the survey (concerning e.g. musical education, familial aggregation of AP and etc.) are presented in the context of theories which attempt to investigate the source of absolute pitch (especially early musical training theory and genetic factors theory).

The author traces the establishment and the subsequent development of music pedagogy education in musical drama institutes and musical colleges in the early 20th century Ukraine. In particular, the author evaluates the training system for music teachers, describes training institutions in the Ukraine, analyzes the curricula of teacher’s training departments of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa musical drama institutes, and reviews the reorganization of the system of higher artistic education from the 1920’s to 1930’s. As a result of this reorganization, institutions offering majors in arts and music were divided into higher schools of music and art; institutes of music, drama and arts; comprehensive schools of music and art; and, colleges of music, drama and arts. The author reveals the goals set for the departments of early musical education in conservatories that were supposed to train highly qualified educators, specialists for different types of out-of-school activities (organization of concerts for children, management of musical work at children’s theatres and cinemas, organization of competitions etc.), and supervisors for teacher’s training at musical colleges.

Opis:
The pilot study presented in this paper is exploratory in nature and aims first to investigate if there exists a relationship between the production of word stress and learners’ musical abilities, and then, to explore the effects of this relationship on teachability of word stress to Polish advanced students of English. The results of the analysis on the auditory recordings were compared with the information provided by the informants in a questionnaire and a performance music test. The obtained data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results show that the students tend to overgeneralise word stress rules in English rather than transfer the penultimate syllable rule from Polish. In addition, there seems to be a relationship between word stress production and musical ability for the majority of the participants.

The aim of this paper is to present latest studies on absolute pitch conducted over the past ten years. The author respectively discusses: results of the research on the origins of absolute pitch, relationship between absolute pitch and musical skills, dependence of the development of absolute pitch on applied aural training methods, anatomical and neural foundations of this ability, as well as infl uence of absolute pitch on the progress of other cognitive abilities. In conclusion the author submits: the key causes for the development of absolute pitch ability lay in innate predispositions (either genetic or stimulated in the prenatal period) — which manifest themselves in the asymmetry between left and right planum temporale — as well as in skills acquired by early musical practice combined with absolute method of ear training. It appears that using tonal languages is benefi cial for the development of absolute pitch. It has been proven that the ability of absolute pitch correlates with profi ciency in performing musical tasks. Examining brains of people with absolute hearing abilities shows that they have better developed circumferential networks, grey matter, greater thickness of cerebral cortex and improved white matter connectivity, what results in more effi cient networking between various areas of brain, better „small-world” functional networking and memory. Ability of absolute pitch can be understood as a phenomenon of unique perceptual enhancement, useful for the examination of brain plasticity.

The Institute of Arts Communication and Music of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) began its 36th year of education in September 2020. Our Institute qualifies classroom music teachers (among others) who will be able to ensure the possibility for their pupils to access the right of learning and performing music. A classroom music teacher should be familiar with the formal and informal education with-in the school and in out-of-school programs as well. This special task requires a high level of creativity and the ability to improvise on one hand and strictly professional knowledge on the other, not only in the field of music but in the organization and moderation of different groups of youngsters. Therefore, we want to instruct students in such teaching methods that foster their capacity for creativity. Besides, we also know that a music teacher must be creative amidst the problems and challenges of today’s world either from a socio-cultural or simply an educatio-nal point of view. For this reason, we always seek professional partners who can develop our training programs.

This article presents a study on music genre classification based on music separation into harmonic and drum components. For this purpose, audio signal separation is executed to extend the overall vector of parameters by new descriptors extracted from harmonic and/or drum music content. The study is performed using the ISMIS database of music files represented by vectors of parameters containing music features. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and co-training method adapted for the standard SVM are involved in genre classification. Also, some additional experiments are performed using reduced feature vectors, which improved the overall result. Finally, results and conclusions drawn from the study are presented, and suggestions for further work are outlined.
