W podsumowaniu uwzględniono wnioski metodologiczne i sformułowano postulat transdyscyplinarnych badań nad saturacją medialną.
The article is dedicated to media saturation. Firstly, it presents a discussion on the relationship between saturation and mediatization. The theoretical assumptions on media saturation are indicated here with a reference to two general types: technological saturation and mediated processes saturation. In addition to this, an analytical tool of communicative fi gurations is being described. Secondly, the analysis of saturation of two case studies – closed space Sky Tower shopping mall and open space P.I.W.O. Light Show project – helps to formulate methodological conclusions as well as recommendations for transdisciplinary research on media saturation going forward.

Computer Assisted Learning (CALL) is defined as the process in which a learner improves language skills by using a computer. Hani (2014) argued that CALL enables individualized, continuous, and authentic activities to teach and integrate the four language skills and indicates that immediate feedback can be given. Thus, this research aims to investigate and analyze the use of Twitter to improve writing skills on senior high school students and to determine its effectiveness as a tool in EAP instruction. The participants were 19 students from the senior level and an English teacher. To conduct this research, a mixed-method design was applied; and a survey and pre-post tests were administered to the participants. At the end of the research process, the participants outperformed on post-testing of writing, therefore, it can be concluded that Twitter is an effective tool to improve the written production of senior high school students, and this micro-blogging platform can be integrated to enhance EAP instruction within EFL contexts.

This paper presents a practical case involving a shopping mall location problem in the northeast countryside of Brazil. In this problem, conflicting objectives have been expressed in terms of seven criteria. Then, ten cities of the northeastern countryside have been selected to compose the space of actions. The problem plays a special role since Brazil is a big country that requires investments in the countryside. Thus, the shopping mall aims to stimulate economic growth in the respective region. In the study, this multi-objective problem is solved using the FITradeoff method. In FITradeoff, the combination of the paradigms of holistic evaluation and elicitation by decomposition in preference modeling are well explored, bringing different perspectives for the decision-maker during the decision process.

This study investigates the potential, in relation to learning and using English, which exists in the current access to and use of new technological devices by university students who are not native speakers of English. As an example case, the availability of a range of devices to 138 Saudi English and Business students at a Saudi university was ascertained through a survey, along with their current use both in general, and specifically involving English, both on and off campus. Students and teachers were also interviewed in order to illuminate the further enhancement of student use of their devices for English improvement. The findings indicate that a range of electronic devices, especially smart phones and laptops, are owned by, or to a lesser extent accessible in other ways to, students. English majors however far outstrip Business majors in access to and use of devices. A considerable proportion of use of devices, especially by English majors, is already English-related. On two measures, it is the smart phone which has the greatest potential for further exploitation in relation to English, followed by the laptop and tablet, and for English majors the TV. Based on teacher and student comments, recommendations are made for such English as a foreign language contexts as to how best to move forward to exploit this potential for both groups of students.

Opis:
The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between reading strategy use and reading comprehension as mediated by reading rate amongst advanced EFL students who received eye movement training by Rapid Visual Presentation (RSVP) technology. Seventy-two EFL learners participated in the study and received instruction for enhancing their reading speed via Reading Trainer Application for twelve consecutive weeks. Their entry-level of reading strategies awareness was assessed by the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory prior to and after the study. Their reading comprehension was assessed by International English System Test before and after the study. Their reading rate was also recorded prior to and after the study. Modelling the relationship between strategy use and reading comprehension as mediated by reading rate was tested prior to the study and the findings showed that the model was not statistically significant. The model was reassessed after the experiment and the results lent credence to the fact that eye training via RSVP for speed reading led to a mediating role for reading rate in the relationship between strategy use and reading comprehension. The results support the fact that reading rate is a contributory factor in understanding reading passages and integrating speed reading training using the-state-of-the-art technologies into reading instruction should be considered in EFL reading courses.

Many studies have confirmed the importance of tasks on language learning. Nowadays, many teachers apply different kinds of tasks in their classrooms. The current study investigated the effect of mobile assisted language learning tasks (MALL) on participants’ English grammar learning. The researcher administered a pre-validated grammar test to 90 junior high school participants aged between 14 to 16 with the mean age 15. The researcher taught grammar to both groups inductively and asked the participants to do their assignments according to their group’s tasks. Based on the post-test results, it can be concluded that the experimental groups had better results than the control group. The study supports the hypothesis that sharing tasks in virtual networks can have positive results for language learning, specifically grammar learning.

Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is one of the fastest growing ELT sectors. To date, the teaching methods of MALL appear overly influenced by the desires of businesses, large institutions and technicians to produce easily measurable outcomes, rather than foundations built on upon pedagogical research that emphasises the importance of developing the communicative competence of learners. Findings from initial studies on MALL indicate not only the feasibility of using mobile devices for communicative purposes within classroom teaching, but also the opportunities they provide to implement a communicative approach more successfully than previously possible. Outworkings of this potential need to be established while the development of MALL remains at the “work in progress” stage.

Opis:
The utter importance of knowing the English language cannot be denied today. Despite the existence of traditional methods for teaching a language in schools, a big number of children are left without the requisite knowledge of English as a result of which they fail to compete in the modern world. With English being a Lingua Franca, more efforts are mandatory to foster the English language learning abilities. This can be achieved by improving the traditional method of teaching by providing alternative means to ameliorate the effort. Keeping these aspects in view, research is being conducted to evaluate the performance of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) and MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) to teach a language. However, this particular research will bring into the limelight a set of social networking applications commonly found in a mobile phone, which can serve as potential English Language Learning tools, due to the versatility of their features. Keeping in view the theories of Mastery Learning, Operant Conditioning, Sense of Community and Task-Based Teaching Principles, the social networking applications will be assessed. Therefore, this descriptive research aims to bring awareness on how the applications can be utilized to enhance task-based learning of English Language.

Opis:
An increasing group of senior citizen customers constitutes a challenge for both the management of shopping centres as well as the traders offering their goods and services in such complexes. Therefore, attention should be paid to who the senior shopping centre customers are, what are their motives for choosing a given shopping centre as a „visiting” place, how their perceive shopping and staying in such centres and, finally, what stance do they take on their location which determines their spatial behaviours. From both the scientific and the marketing point of view, it is important to determine the preferences and motivations for spatial behaviours also in people of pre-senior age, as they will soon enough be part of the senior group active on the consumer market.People aged 45–59 and 60+ constitute an important section of the customers of shopping centres in Łódź. The former group is especially popular. Those of the so-called „pre-senior” age making use of the wide range of products and services on offer are the more frequent visitors in the „consumption temples”.

Opis:
This paper seeks to help clarify whether Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is primarily an independent self-study activity or whether MALL classrooms exist. The research hypothesised that a large number of users frequently using specific MALL apps, at the same time and in the same city location, may indicate the existence of MALL classrooms. The research makes use of big data, in the form of Google Analytics data, collected from two EFL learning mobile apps. The data was gathered over a five month period, in 2015, from more than 6,000 cities worldwide. The research, in doing so, opens a sociological window into the world of MALL, providing a sample of actual user behaviour. The results strongly suggest that independent study is almost certainly the main form of MALL activity. However, the research also concludes that MALL classroom-driven activity may exist in some cities.

Opis:
Today it is hard to imagine a large modern city without a shopping mall. Actually mall emerged as a kind of city center for periphery residents. However, in today’s fast paced life the concept of “everything under one roof” has become an integral part of the urban structure. Mall makes it possible to meet not one but a number of needs at once. The fact that mall is analogous to city centre is confirmed not only by their functional content similarity, but also by structure. Like urban web is anchored at nodes of human activity, “shopping mall web” is anchored on nodes of retail and entertainment spaces. Like urban structures have a hierarchy of connections (from footpaths to roads), shopping mall structure has a hierarchy of social spaces (from side malls to the centre court). Despite this similarity, the socialization and communication problems in shopping malls remain unsolved. In this study the comparative analysis of urban and shopping mall structures was performed. We defined the key urban structure principles suitable for effective formation of social and public spaces of malls.

The article presents a fragment of the results from the study on the perception of the central space of five Silesian cities: Katowice, Rybnik, Tychy, Bytom and Ruda Śląska, conducted with Krzysztof Bierwiaczonek (PhD, The Institute of Sociology, The University of Silesia). Out of a large research material the author selects a part devoted to the perception of changes in the centres of the cities under examination. The author wondered if, with reference to the places in question, the thesis of the crisis of the city central space is justified, if their traditional centre disappears or is moved to big shopping malls. The studies were qualitative and quantitative in nature. The main research technique was a free interview based on the one conducted by Lynch and Nasar (the studies in Knoxville). The supporting technique constituted a draft of the city central space outlined by the respondents intertwined into the interview. Thanks to it, the mental maps were created, or, to be more specific, cognitive maps of the central space. The results that were discussed concerned the need of the existence of the centre, the replacement of the centre with big shopping malls, the desacralization of the centre and perception of changing ongoing there. The material collected allows to make a statement that despite many symptoms of the transition of the Silesian city centres into the non centres of non cities, the trivialization of their central space has not happened yet. The centres still play an important role in the cities under investigation. The inhabitants appreciate the need of the existence of the centre and perceiving the city a such, refer to the spacious archetype, i.e. the city with the central point the market square constitutes. The studies also showed that malls did not replace the central space. Another conclusion deriving from the research is a progressing desacralization of the central space of the cities in focus.

Research shows that trips generated by shopping malls has a significant impact on traffic volumes. Increased traffic volume significantly increases the risk of road accidents, so the location of such facilities as shopping malls and the designation of connection points (entry and exit) to the public road network should be carefully analyzed in traffic safety.
