Opis:
Extreme events tend to cause large-scale slope system changes. During the last ten years, a series of extreme meteorological events caused considerable transformation of the slopes and valleys in various parts of the Carpathian Mountains. This paper presents the geomorphological effects of extreme rainfall and thaw events on the slopes of two catchments: the lososina catchment (Beskid Wyspowy) and the Hoczewka catchment with an area around the Solinskie Lake (Bieszczady Niskie). The bulk of the discussion concerns a study carried out in the Lososina catchment after three separate extreme events that were followed by a considerable transformation of the slopes due to landsliding. The studies carried out in the Biesr.cr.ady Range, where a single extreme event produced only spatially limited effects, were mainly used for comparison. '[he disparity between the responses of the two slope systems was a result of differences between the systems themselves, including their geology, geomorphology and landslide record, and of the difference in the scale of the extreme events.

The paper presents a 3D (spatial) analysis of deformation processes in the landslide slope Bystrzyca in Szymbark near Gorlice (Low Beskid – Carpathians; N 49°37′ 09″, E 21°05′ 49″) carried out by the computer code FLAC3D based on the finite difference method. The numerical analysis was performed to determine the influence of the orientation of layers and discontinuities and of hydrogeological conditions on slope deformations and the failure mechanism during sliding processes. The massif is modeled as an elasto-plastic medium obeying the Coulomb-Mohr criterion. Two variants of hydrogeological conditions are analyzed, namely the “dry slope” (without water) and the “wet slope” (entirely saturated). The influence of the orientation of discontinuities (modeled as “ubiquitous”) on the landslide mechanism is investigated as well. Few orientations of discontinuities with respect to the dip direction of the slope surface are considered, namely consequent, insequent, and subsequent (two variants in each case). The results show a clear impact of the pattern of discontinuities and hydrogeological conditions on the deformational behavior of the landslide and the shape of the slip surface. The 3D approach and results of the numerical simulation of the landslide movement prove the necessity of 3D modeling in some cases.

Opis:
Common occurrences of terrigenic organic matter (both disseminated and accumulated in layers) in sedimentary rocks were observed. The flysch sediments in the Podhale Trough and in other parts of the Carpathians are inadequately recognised from coal petrologic point of view. Studies were carried out in the eastern (2008) and western part (2009) of the Podhale Trough. Samples were collected from the exposures. Petrographic studies included microscopic observations of polished sections as well as mean random reflectance measurements of vitrinite (colotellinite) were done. In the Podhale Flysch, coalified organic matter is represented mostly by vitrinite and, in microscopic scale, mainly by collotellinite. The common occurrence of coaly matter is revealed. It is well–visible in sandstones and mudstones, usually as the bedding planes. The amounts of coaly matter in clay minerals and carbonates are small. Organic matter hosted in the Podhale Flysch strata represents diversified coalification ranks measured as random reflectance of vitrinite (colotellinite), which falls into the range from 0.49 to 1.00%. Such values are typical for low- to medium ranks of bituminous coal. Measurements of reflectance provided new data suitable for evaluation of thermal history of rocks in the Podhale Trough. The changes of vitrinite (colotellinite) mean reflectance of organic matter from the Podhale Flysch are relevant to the contents of crystalline illite – the recently applied geothermometer of diagenetic (katagenetic) transformations of clay minerals. If the thermal palaeogra- dient is known, random changes of reflectance of vitrinite can be used for estimations of both the maximum thickness of the Podhale Flysch during deposition and its later amount of erosion. It appears that estimation of ma- ximum thickness of the Podhale Flysch (i.e., depositional thickness after compaction) and the amount of erosion are almost identical with the estimations based upon the illitization of clay minerals.

Chloride waters in the Polish Flysch Carpathians are remnants of marine sedimentation water which was chemically and isotopically changed due to ultrafiltration and the release of dehydration water (diagenetic water) during the burial diagenesis of clay minerals. In the western part of the study area, the diagenetic end-member is characterized by δ18O and δ2H values of about +6.5 and –30.0‰, respectively, and Cl– content in the range of 3.8 and 13.8 g/dm3. In some fault areas, such waters migrate to the surface and mix with local meteoric waters as indicated by mixing lines in δ18O–δ2H and δ18O–Cl– graphs. In several wells of the eastern part, waters containing a significant proportion of marine water occur. However, in majority of deep wells, mixtures of diagenetic and meteoric waters of Quaternary and pre-Quaternary climates are present, as deduced from δ18O–Cl– linear relations. In most cases, they do not exhibit linear relations also expected in δ18O–δ2H graphs due to the shifts of δ2H to heavier isotopic values supposedly caused by involvement of water in the generation of hydrocarbons.

The Crimean Mountains (CM) are regarded as part of the Alpine-Himalaya orogenic belt related to the collision of the Eurasian and African plates. Our research in the CM has allowed confirming the existence of at least two flysch formations of different ages: the Taurida Flysch Formation (Upper Triassic/Lower–? Middle Jurassic) and the Sudak Formation (uppermost Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous) in the western and eastern sectors of the CM, respectively. After the Middle Jurassic volcanism, the freshwater claystones with coal-bearing intercalations, as well as local alluvial fan conglomerates were deposited. Then, following the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian marine transgression, three separated Tithonian/Berriasian carbonate platforms developed: Baydarska, Chatyr-Dag and Demerji/Karabi. At the turn of the Late Jurassic, the deep-water Sudak Basin (eastern sector of the CM) began to develop in the eastern periphery of the Demerji/Karabi carbonate platform. This basin, dominated by turbiditic deposition, was probably connected with the Great Caucasus sedimentary system. Finally, distal flysch sedimentation in the Sudak Basin was followed by debris-flow deposits, with huge blocks of Upper Jurassic limestones. These blocks were derived from destruction of the Karabi carbonate platform. During the Berriasian/Valanginian, the eastern sector of the CM began to subside. As a result, both carbonate platforms (western CM) and the debris flow fans of the Sudak Basin (eastern CM) were overlain by marly shales and/or distal turbidites. This type of deposition lasted until the Aptian/Albian. In the post-Albian period, the Alushta-Salgir tectonic zone was transformed into a SE-dipping thrust fault with at least 10 km amplitude of overthrusting.

Abstract: In his ground-breaking research on the sedimentary structures of turbidites, Stanisław Dżułyński demonstrated and took to new levels of accomplishment the defining attributes of the Kraków School of flysch sedimentology established by Marian Książkiewicz at the Jagiellonian University. These attributes included a meticulous approach to fieldwork, the ability to recognize the scalar and vector relationships of diverse sedi- mentary features, a working knowledge of several languages, a capacity to describe systematically structures that had previously received scant attention in the world literature of geology, and innovation in the transfer of scientific knowledge. Dżułyński also added elements that were distinctively his own: a highly inventive approach to the replication of turbidite sedimentary structures in laboratory flumes, an openness to new ideas, boundless enthusiasm for his chosen field, and an exuberantly outgoing personality. In spite of worldwide recognition for his numerous and wide-ranging achievements in geology, he viewed himself first and foremost as one of the senior students of Marian Książkiewicz. In this role, Dżułyński utilised every opportunity to present with great insight and objectivity the work of the Kraków School, enthusiastically shared his extensive knowledge of sedimentology with experienced colleagues and new acquaintances alike and, in particular, gave generous encouragement to young researchers.

During the construction of a section of the S-7 Lubień – Rabka-Zdrój dual expressway, located in the area of the Carpathian flysch (Carpathian Flysch Belt, South Poland), damage to the embankment was observed, as well as cracks and depressions in the new pavement. An analysis of the geological and engineering conditions in the area of the road section under construction showed the existence of a complex tectonic structure of the flysch formations, a shallow groundwater table, and numerous landslides. In order to stabilize the road substrate, it was decided to carry out injections, and the locations of these injections were initially geotechnically tested. However, due to the high variability of the geological structure, the target method employed was electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), which performed the survey in two stages. In Stage I, the geoelectrical/geochemical structure of the near-surface zone was identified, and the probable causes of road damage were indicated. This stage was completed by performing the stabilization and sealing process of the ground with an injection mixture. In Stage II, studies were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the injection process. The ERT method effectively identified the shallow geological structure and, in particular, delineated the zone of strong fractures in the flysch and areas associated with faults. Using the electrical resistivity tomography method, it was also possible to determine the injection mixture’s approximate penetration depth and the loosening zone’s degree of filling.

According to the geomechanical criterion, it is dilation cave, where extension has played a major role. Morphotectonic analysis indicates that the main gravitational movement was of a toppling nature but there were also rotation around the vertical axis as well as a backward rotation. The relatively large cave depth (15.5 m) and its shape (cross-section of its passages) indicate that it was formed along a new gravitational cutting surface of the rock massif, associated with joint sets.

Geological setting and precipitation triggers seem to be obvious parameters controlling landslides, but their relation to individual sliding processes has not been clear. We take on interdisciplinary approach (combining Earth science methods with an engineer ing-geotechnical approach) to examine sliding processes in the Kawiory landslide in the Polish Carpathians. Field parameters were obtained from inclinometer monitoring, meteorological records, piezometer data and geomechanical tests. Numerical simulation of the landslide development was performed, both for the reconstruction of the internal deformation phenomena on the slope and for approximate prediction of its future behaviour. An empirical formula describing the relationship between the depth of groundwater level (GWL) and precipitation is presented. The case study showed that for the ob served quasi-continuous creep, the depth and in particular the intensity of GWL fluctuations might be crucial.

Detrital fragments of automorphic tourmaline crystals are commonly incorporated in tests of simple agglutinated foraminifera that lived in the deep-marine Carpathian turbidite basin, in which deposition of the Hieroglyphic beds (Eocene) took place. Such grains were observed in the tests of 37 taxa representing 20 species. However tourmaline occurs in the Carpathian Flysch sediments as an accessory mineral, still it was selected by the foraminifera as the only heavy mineral to be incorporated in their tests. The proportion of tourmaline-bearing specimens in an assemblage usually amounts to a few percent, but may reach 29% in extreme cases. The particular preference for tourmaline segregation and incorporation in the test walls is shown by the following genera: Psammosiphonella, Reophax, Bathysiphon and Nothia.

The advantage of the zircon typology method, supplemented with elongation measurements, is that it may be applied successfully to comparisons of euhedral zircon populations from sedimentary deposits of different ages and unknown provenance. The zircon typology method, along with elongation measurements of zircons, contributes valuable data that supplement conventional heavy-mineral analyses. It also permits the recognition of potential source areas and rock types for further comparative research.

This study identifies zones with significant changes in pore water pressure influenced by landslide processes. Measurements were taken in the near-surface strata of the Carpathian flysch, in colluvium of the Siercza landslide, near Kraków. Measurement of pore water pressure in flysch deposits is complicated due to the strongly heterogeneous properties of the medium and by variable water conditions, which are strongly influenced by rainfall intensity. Pore pressure profiling was performed in six series using a cone penetration test with a NOVA Acoustic cone. The tests were carried out in the colluvium to a depth of ~6.0 m under varying water conditions. The cone pore pressure results were compared to results of inclinometer measurements in the research area. Five zones with significant differences in pore pressure have been identified. Changes in both cone pore pressure and inclinometer displacement are evident at a depth range from 1.5 to 2.5 m. Two slip surfaces are likely present in this section. Such information can be used in engineering practice for more reliable assessment of slope stability in the Carpathian flysch.

Values of rainfall thresholds on selected shallow landslide slopes (Dział, Gwoździec) located in the Nowy Wiśnicz Foothills are determined using a physically-based slope stability model considering a long-term period of analysis (GeoSlope Inc. software). Slope stability analysis included determination of the impact of rainfall on changes of stress state within the soil substrate and their influence on estimation of mass movement risk. The slope stability calculation results have shown that the rainfall threshold values are a function of many variables, primarily the hydraulic properties of soil and rock substratum, temporal distribution of precipitation, and soil moisture content conditions in the period proceeding rainfall. The results of the calculations indicate that, in extreme cases, accumulated rainfall threshold values for the same slope can range from ~100 to 500 mm. Estimated rainfall threshold values were lower than those values reported in the literature for the Polish Carpathians, but are similar to those determined by Guzetti et al. (2007) for Central and Southern Europe.

The study focused on the chemistry of detrital garnet and tourmaline from sediments of the Boryslav and Kliva Sandstone types in the Oligocene part of the Menilite Formation of the Skole Nappe (Western Outer Carpathians, Poland), with regard to provenance. Almandine and almandine-pyrope compositional varieties are the most common garnets, with minor almandine-pyrope-grossular garnet. Scarce garnet grains, with grossular and spessartine as the dominant end-members, are also present. The tourmaline belongs to the alkali tourmaline principal group and represents the schörl-dravite series. The detrital garnet and tourmaline display strong, compositional similarities to minerals, occurring in igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Bohemian Massif, as well as to detrital grains, deposited within the internal basins of the massif. This suggests that the primary rocks for the garnet and tourmaline may be crystalline complexes of the Bohemian Massif. However, other uplifted areas, similar to the complexes of the Bohemian Massif, cannot be ruled out. Such hypothetical areas could be located in the northern foreland of the Carpathian basins. Euhedral tourmaline and other minerals, occurring in the heavy- mineral assemblages studied, most probably were derived from eroded and presently not exposed, crystalline complexes, originally situated in the Skole Basin foreland or within the basin.

Opis:
The Lower Carboniferous sediments of the Bardo Mts. is mainly composed of biostratigraphically undocumented flysch sequences. A cone impression was found in clayey-mudstone bed of the Srebrna Góra formation that represents one of these flysch sequences. The estimated Middle or even Upper Viséan relative age of this formation was determined based on the underlying paleontologically documented Nowa Wieś formation. The strobilus specimen is morphologically similar to cones assigned to genera Flemingites and Lepidostrobus, that were produced by arborescent lycopsids. The absence of in situ spores makes a precicse taxonomical determination of the cone impossible. The currently known stratigraphical ranges of the two genera are consistent with the previous opinions on the age of Srebrna Góra formation.

Opis:
This study reports on a new set of sedimentological data and related interpretations of the Santonian–Campanian siliciclastic deposits in the Western Flysch Carpathians based on natural outcrops in the uppermost Godula Formation and lowermost Istebna Formation. The rationale was to confront the characteristics of this flysch succession with current controversies and state of knowledge on deep-water clastic sedimentation. The sedimentological analysis of the field data allowed for multi-scale synthetic classifications of the depositional components in the investigated flysch. The hierarchical and practical nature of the suggested classification schemes allows for their application to similar deposits in other regions. The siliciclastic deposits are products of gravity-driven terrigenous sediment redeposition via submarine slumps, debris flows, and turbidity currents. Sediment reworking by tractional bottom currents is considered as an accompanying factor. Point-sourced turbiditic fan lobe fringes from the submarine piedmont ramp and linearly supplied debritic covers along the slope apron are proposed as dominant. The innovative linking between the textural-structural descriptive features of the deposits and the critical determinants of specific sediment gravity-flow processes and architectural elements of the deepwater clastic depositional systems is a significant contribution to this research field.

The Nienadowa Marl Member, composed mainly of various marly, mixed siliciclastic-marly, or siliciclastic thin-bedded turbidites, is deeply burrowed by opportunistic Thalassinoides, Chondrites, Phycosiphon and Scolicia. Ichnofabrics and the trace fossil assemblage indicate well oxygenated environment. Relatively low ichnodiversity is probably related to opportunistic burrowers influenced by possible eutrophy and strong sediment heterogeneity, as well as to preservational potential. Ichnofabrics and trace-fossil tiering patterns are different in the basinal sections of the Nienadowa Marl Member and in the slope/shelf environment represented by marlstone clasts in the coeval debris-flow deposits of the Czudec Clay. Thalassinoides penetrates deeper than Chondrites in the proximal turbidites and shallower than Chondrites in the distal turbidites.
Thalassinoides penetruje głębiej niż Chondrites w facjach proksymalnych turbidytów, a płycej niż Chondrites w turbidytach facji dystalnych.

Several sections record the relation between the “black flysch” and Upper Cretaceous red shales in the Grajcarek thrust-sheets. In all the sections studied the “black flysch” appears in the core of imbricated folds or thrust-sheets, whereas the limbs are composed of Upper Cretaceous deposits. The transitional beds between the “ black flysch” and the Upper Cretaceous red shales are composed of green and black bituminous shales, green and red radiolarites and cherty limestones. Biostratigraphical investigations have revealed a similar type and sequence of microfauna assemblages in all the sections studied and significant redeposition of Jurassic calcareous benthic foraminifera, calcareous nannoplankton, molluscs, sponge spicules and crinoid elements. The Cretaceous age (Aptian/Albian-?Cenomanian) of the “black flysch” is shown by the presence of agglutinated foraminifera and microfacies data. These deposits are underlain by a Kimmeridgian-Aptian radiolarite/limestone condensed succession and overlain by Turonian-Campanian hemipelagic red shales and Maastrichtian/Lower Paleocene conglomerates and thick-bedded silicilastic turbidites of the Jarmuta Formation. Such a sequence of deposits is typical of the Outer Carpathian basins and records the global Mid/Late Cretaceous phenomena in the world ocean, followed by the Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds.

Thenetwork of joints cutting the flysch deposits in the western Podhale is reasonably regular both in map scale and in individual outcrops. It is formed by five sets having a different orientation with respect to the range of the Podhale Synclinorium, as well as a different age and origin. The oldest diagonal sets (DR, DL) are conjugate and roughly coeval and were formed as "potential shear surfaces" in horizontal beds, whereas their further opening proceeded in an extensional mode. The younger sublongitudinal set (L') comprises extensional joints originated during the early buckling of beds. The transverse set (T), younger than the L'-set, comprises extensional joints formed in relation to the WNW-ESE extension of the Podhale Synclinorium. The youngest longitudinal set (L) originated in an extensional mode in consequence of stress relaxation in the rock massif during postorogenic uplift. Joint density increases in areas involved in relatively strong tectonic disturbances: the zone of tectonic contact between the flysch and the Pieniny Klippen Belt, the zone of contact between the Paleogene deposits, the Tatra Massif and the Biały Dunajec fault zone.

The occurrence of mineral waters and related spas constitutes the leading theme of the projected geopark: Flysch Carpathians and their mineral waters. The geopark is located on the Beskid Sądecki and Beskid Niski area on the Polish side. It is situate in the area of the occurrence of three Carpathian units: Magura Nappe (the major part of the area), which includes Krynica, Bystrica, Racza and Siary tectonic-facies zones; Silesian Nappe and Grybów Unit. Besides mineral waters, the geodiversity of the area is defined by well exposed flysch rocks profiles including clastic type localities of the Magura Nappe described in the XIX century pioneers of geological investigations. The landslide morphology, attractive geomorphological forms like waterfalls, diversified river valleys, tors as well as places connected with history and tradition of exploration and exploitation of Carpathian hydrocarbons fields. The type localities of profiles of Grybów, Siary and Krynica Units as well as Łabowa Variegated Shales, Beloveza and Malcov formations. All these elements represent geotouristical attractions with high potential. They will be included in the network of preserved geosites within the projected geopark. The analysis of proposed geopark Flysch Carpathians and their mineral waters indicates high degree of diversification of natural values, especially geodiversity as well as richness of historical-cultural heritage. The preservation and protection methods are also diversified. This region represents unique geoenvironmental and historical values on the European scale, therefore providing good chances for establishment of geopark. The proposition of geopark with mineral waters and related spas in the Flysch Carpathians is first such project in the world. The documentation of geosites was already gathered during this stage of work, it requires only actualization, minor additions and construction of unified database. The evaluation of the actual touristic infrastructure provided also generally positive results, only the eastern part of geopark requires additional investments and promotion.

Opis:
Garnet in heavy-mineral assemblages, occurring in sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Skole Nappe, is present as first-cycle and poly-cycle grains, derived from a proximal source, remote areas and/or from sedimentary rocks of the Skole Basin foreland. The garnets in the formations are compositionally similar, suggesting an origin from the same source rocks. Relatively large amounts of garnet, represented by euhedral or slightly rounded, weakly etched or unetched almandine and spessartine-almandine garnet, and minor pyrope-enriched almandine, were derived directly from a source close to the Skole Basin. These garnets are from sediments, metamorphosed at low- to medium-grade conditions (such as mica-schists, gneisses) and perhaps also granitic bodies. Rounded and variously etched garnets, especially high pyrope-almandine and pyrope-almandine-grossular varieties, but also partly almandine-dominated varieties, are suggested to have been derived from distant sources, such as sedimentary rocks of the Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks. Rocks, forming uplifted parts of the crystalline basement of Brunovistulicum and/or crystalline domains of the Bohemian Massif, could have been protoliths for part of the almandine-dominated garnet population, whereas pyrope-grossular-almandine garnets may originate from the granulitic, eclogitic or metabasic rocks of the Bohemian Massif. The study shows that analyses of garnet composition, combined with observations on grain textural features and data on the lithology of clasts and pebbles, can permit the determination of sources for different garnet varieties in mixed-provenance populations.

Opis:
In this paper, flysch is presented as a representative material of a wide section of the Carpathian Mountains, with some areas in Poland highlighted. The geological structure of this area is complex due to the alternating layers of blocky rock masses and soil (Vessia et al., 2017). Such a complex pattern is seen in some Alpine flysch slopes, such as the Ingelsberg landslide area (Romeo et al., 2015). Many authors are monitored, predicted landslides (Allasia et al., 2013; Bertacchini et al., 2009; Casagli et al., 2010) by sophisticated sensors. The rock-soil flysch successions have become intensively fissured as a result of their geological history, weathering (precipitation and snowmelt), and long-term water retention, especially on the surface layers. These complex materials are characterised by heterogeneous lithologies, whose mechanical properties are largely uncertain. These geological structures have also been confirmed by monitoring and control studies performed on a large number of landslides (Bednarczyk, 2014). One of the most striking phenomena is the sudden decrease in the strength parameters in the studied rocks in the direction parallel to the layers due to watering. The process is made possible by heterogeneous fractured strong rock layers with high permeability coefficients for water. This study precisely describes the phenomena occurring at the contact area between the component layers of flysch under the wet conditions of a weak plane. An elastic-plastic analysis method that considers the developed strength model at the surfaces of the contact areas (Biernatowski & Pula, 1988; Pula, 1997) has been used to estimate the load capacity for piles working under a horizontal load. The piles are part of a reliability chain (Pula, 1997) in a given construction and are the first element of concern for monitoring (Muszynski & Rybak, 2017). A particular device intended to study the dependence of the shear stress on a fixed failure surface in a controlled consolidation condition was utilized. The study was conducted for a wide range of displacements and for different values of stabilized vertical stresses of consolidation. The complexity of the processes occurring in the shear zone, presented as a detailed study of the material crack mechanics, is highlighted. The laboratory results were used to construct the mechanical model of the slip surface between the soil and rock with the description supported by a neural network (NN) approximation. The artificial NN was created as a multi-layered, easy to use approach for interpreting results and for quick reconstruction of approximated values useful for the calculations presented in laterally loaded piles. For the calculations, long, sheared strips of material were considered in a semi-analytical procedure to solve a differential equation of stability. The calculations are intended to reveal the safety indexes for a wide range of boundary tasks as the most significant indicator for design decisions.

Potwierdziły to analizy składu chemicznego wykonane w latach 1971- 2001. Najniższą jakość wody powierzchniowe i podziemne miały w latach 1980.

Conventional and high-resolution analyses of heavy minerals from the gravity flow-deposited sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian interval of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Polish Carpathians display similar compositions in terms of mineral species. Zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, staurolite and kyanite belong to the main constituents in both formations. Apatite is common in the Ropianka Fm., while the Menilite Fm. almost lacks this mineral. Furthermore, individual hornblende grains were found in the Ropianka Fm., while andalusite is present only in the Menilite Fm. The Ropianka Fm. is relatively richer in zircon, tourmaline, garnet and apatite, while the Menilite Fm. contains more staurolite and kyanite. Zircon and tourmaline colour and morphological varieties are similar in both formations. The similarities of the heavy mineral assemblages studied suggest origin of these minerals from lithologically similar rocks. Negative correlations between the zircon + tourmaline + rutile (ZTR) values and the content of garnet and staurolite in the Ropianka Fm. may indicate, to a large extent, first-cycle delivery of garnet and staurolite to the formation. Negative, but low, correlation valid only for ZTR and garnet and positive correlations for ZTR and staurolite and kyanite in the Menilite Fm. suggest delivery of these minerals from sedimentary rocks or/and palimpsest sediments. The data obtained on mineral relationships and their morphology suggest mixed first-cycle and recycled provenance of the heavy minerals studied. Additionally, the first-cycle material input seems to be larger during the Ropianka Fm. sedimentation, while during the deposition of Menilite Fm. the contribution of material delivered from erosion of recycled sediments appears more prominent. The heavy mineral evidence suggests a change at the northern margin of the Skole Basin from an immature passive margin with a high relief during sedimentation of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka Fm. to a mature passive margin with a low relief during sedimentation of the Menilite Fm.

In the Polish sector of the Magura Nappe, along the front of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, strongly tectonized calcareous flysch up to 1000 m thick is exposed. Previously these deposits, composed of thin- to thick-bedded flysch, with a packet of Łącko-type marls, have been included into several Paleocene/Eocene formations, e.g., the Szczawnica Formation. This formation contains a poor assemblage of agglutinated foraminifera and a relatively rich assemblage of calcareous nannoplankton, with abundant reworked species. The youngest species give evidence of the NN2 Zone (Lower Miocene). Additionally, in three profiles (Szlachtowa, Knurów and Waksmund) of the Kremna Fm., Early Miocene foraminifera have been recognized. This research documented that during the Burdigalian, at the front of Central Western Carpathians, there still existed a residual marine basin probably up to 100 km wide. These deposits also contain thick packages of exotic carbonate conglomerates derived from the SE, previously regarded as the Jarmuta Formation.

Opis:
The "black flysch" deposits (Szlachtowa Formation at Podubocze near Czorsztyn in Poland), attributed so far to the Pieniny Klippen Basin successions, and at Hałuszowa in Poland as well as at Kamienka in Eastern Slovakia, attributed to the Grajcarek Succession of the Magura Basin, have yielded rich dinoflagellate cyst assemblages consisting of forms both redeposited (from Upper Triassic to Aalenian) and indigenous (Lower Bajocian to Upper Bajocian). An Early to Late Bajocian age of the deposits investigated is thus indicated, and this along with other stratigraphical, sedimentological and tectonic data indicates that all the deposits in question represent the early stages of development of the Magura Basin. The formation of “black flysch” deposits was possibly related to the Early Bajocian uplift of the Czorsztyn Ridge which resulted from the opening of the Magura Ocean. The occurrence of the deposits of the Magura Basin below the overthrusted deposits of the Klippen Basin (Czorsztyn Unit) in the area of study results in a marked change in the structural interpretation of the Pieniny Klippen Belt.

The chemistry of precipitation significantly alters while infiltrating through a layer of weathered rocks. The paper deals with the role of weathering mantle in shaping the chemistry of shallow groundwater in a flysch catchment basin. The analytical and modelling research show that weathering mantles also affect the formation of calcareous sinter. Based on the results of field studies, a hydrochemical model has been developed, which documents the transformation of chemical composition of groundwater. The rate of precipitating calcium carbonate is also determined. The test area covered the Suchy Stream catchment basin located within the southern flank of the Podhale basin.

Opis:
When conducting geological surveys in landslide areas, it is important to define the scope of the planned geological works. The most important issue in the study of landslides is the recognition of the depth and shape of the slip surface. This requires the correct type of drilling and a good core quality. Most often, within a single landslide, several slip surfaces are documented, which occur at different depths, which is associated with a complex manner of motion and shear. Proper determination of the deepest sliding surfaces allows for the construction of a calculation model and selection of the optimal method of securing the landslide area. The course of the slip surface is often not determined by the depth of the bedrock under the cover formations. Geological diagnosis should depend on the size of the examined landslide and the impact of its activation on potential damage / destruction of existing buildings and technical infrastructure. The method of documenting and carrying out calculations is presented as recommended in landslide areas. In the first step, calculations should be made on the basis of data obtained from field work and parameters obtained from laboratory tests. Monitoring should complement field research and assess the scale of displacements. Conducting stability calculations should be a standard for the preparation of geological and engineering documentation of landslides and areas at risk of mass movements. It allows you to assess the risk and threats to the planned investment or protective structure. This is to provide permanent safeguards to prevent damage to buildings that have been designed on the basis of uncertain geological data. It is postulated to modify the ordinance on the implementation of geological and engineering documentation by adding a point concerning the documentation of landslides. If there is such an area, special requirements must be met when conducting geological surveys.

The paper describes research on the effect of precipitation and infiltration on the groundwater recharge of the Palaeogene aquifer. Since the safe yield in the Tylicz region is closely linked to the recharge regime, the dates of occurrence of specific groundwater levels and amplitudes of water table increase and decrease have been characterised. These data have been discussed on the background of precipitation and infiltration rates.

Opis:
Thirty rock and mineral samples were collected in the Rabe-Bystre area in the so-called Bystre slice in the Flysch Carpathians. The research concentrated on the mineral occurrence, parageneses and on the relationship to the tectonics. Red mineral realgar displays a pure content of arsenic sulphide. It occurs in veins and aggregates in the most frequent association with quartz. Fluid inclusions in the realgar crystals have been characterized and preliminarily measured, which is a totally new study in the Carpathian area. A new mineral – goyazite SrAl3(PO4)(PO3OH)(OH)6 – has been found as intergrowths in the realgar accumulations, and its characteristics are provided. It seems that the quartz-carbonates-bitumen paragenesis in the study region is related to the distinct tectonic mélange zones, while the ore mineralization should be referred to fault zones and fissures, and/or the mélange zones. It has an epigenetic character, and may be referred to the adjacent potential magmatic body and mineralized waters in the neighbourhood.

Opis:
For tens of years the influence of fracturing of oil- and gas-bearing Carpathian flysch lithofacies on their permeability and porosity has been studied on drill cores and in outcrops. The analyses of cores from the reservoir series of the Krosno-Grybów Beds in the Słopnice near Limanowa oil and gas field, and particularly of the whole section of the Kuźmina-1 deep well, have proved strong influence of solidity of the studied series on their fracturing intensity. During the last decade the fracturing studies have been focused on the Oligocene Krosno Sandstones and Cretaceous-Paleocene Inoceramian Sandstones in the Eastern Polish Carpathians. The investigations have been carried out in measurement fields located within outcrops of oil- and gas-bearing folds. Analysis of a large set of data processed into averaged reservoir parameters has proved that the effective fracture porosity for the whole population of macrofractures is low and only rarely exceeds 1%. Total fracture permeability varies widely, from fractions of millidarcy to several hundred millidarcy (mD). It is characteristic that results of laboratory measurements of rock samples from the studied sandstone series have documented, in general, their insignificant intergranular permeability (usually less than 0.1 mD), related to predominant contribution of micropores.

Ichnotaxonomy of 1,840 of flysch trace fossil specimens from the Ksiazkiewicz collection is revised. The specimens derive from diverse Tithonian?Miocene flysch deposits of the Polish Carpathians. Their ichnotaxonomy, based on morphology, was published by Ksiazkiewicz in 1997. In the revision presented in this publication, the ichnotaxonomic subdivisions are based on type of behaviour represented by the considered trace fossil. As a result, several diagnoses are changed and several ichnospecies ascribed to other ichnogenera. Ichnogenera Hormosiroidea, Saerichnites, ?Parahaentzschelinia, Halopoa, Nereites, Beaconites, Cladichnus, Protovirgularia, Ubinia and Oscillorhaphe are used the first time in the Polish Carpathians. The ichnogenera Pararusophycus, Rhabdoglyphus, Fucusopsis, Traucumichnis, Sabularia, Granularia, Bostricophyton, Halymenidium, Buthotrephis, Tubulichnium, Tuberculichnus, Helminthoida, Muensteria, Keckia, and Taphrhelminthoida are not recommended for further use. The new ichnogenus Belocosmorhaphe n. igen. and the new ichnospecies name Cosmorhaphe carpathica nom. nov. are proposed. Ichnotaxa Trichichnus linearis Frey, Imponoglyphus torquendus Vialov, Palaeophycus tubularis Hall, Chondrites ?recurvus (Brongniart) and Arenituba isp. are distinguished for the first time in the Carpathian flysch on the base of Ksiazkiewicz material.

The proto-Silesian Basin was well developed within the Alpine Tethys during the Late Jurassic times and existed as undivided entity until the significant Late Cretaceous reorganization. The deposits originated within this basin were incorporated into different structural units: Silesian, Subsilesian and Skole. The calciturbiditic Cieszyn Limestone Formation is the oldest Cretaceous flischoidal sequence of the proto-Silesian Basin. This calciturbiditic sedimentation passed gradually into younger siliciclastic deposition.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

The oldest flysch deposits are the leading theme of the planned "Silesian-Moravian-Żywiec Beskid" Geopark. The geopark is located in the area of Beskid Śląski Mts. and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. in the territory ofPoland. This is a region of the occurrence of a number of tectonic units of the Outer Carpathians, including Pieniny Klippen Belt, Magura Nappe (with Krynica, Bystrica, Raca and Siary tec- tonic-facies zones), Fore-Magura Unit, Silesian Nappe and Subsilesian Nappe. Geodiversity of this area is defined by well-exposed sections ofrocks. They were the sites ofclassical geological work in the 19th century. Within the geopark boundaries, there are the type localities of the following tectonic units: Silesian Nappe, Fore-Magura, Bystrica and Raca units, as well as Jaworzynka, Bystrica, Vyhylovka, Vendryne and Cieszyn Limestone formations, Malinowska Skala Conglomerate, Mutne Sandstone, and Cisownica Shale members. Landslides, attractive geomorphologic landforms (e.g., highest peaks of the Beskidy Mts., providing magnificent views), waterfalls, diversified river valleys, tors, caves as well as places associated with the history and tradition of this region represent geotouristic attractions with a high potential. They will be included in the network ofgeosites protected within the planned geopark. Analysis ofthe geopark area indicates a high degree of variability of natural values, especially its geodiversity and richness of the historical-cultural heritage. The preservation and protection methods are also diversified. This region represents unique geoenvironmental and historical values on the European scale, therefore offering good chances for establishment of geopark. The documentation of geosites has already been gathered at this stage of work. The information requires only updating, minor additions and construction ofa unified database. The evaluation ofthe current touristic infrastructure have also brought very positive results; the area isfrequented by millions oftouristsfrom Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other countries.

The paper presents the possibility of using complex geophysical investigations and geotechnical classification to identify geological structure and assess the stability of Carpathian landslides. The possibility of using seismic surveys to determine the landslide slope geometry necessary to analyze the computational stability has been indicated. In the paper authors present the possibility of geotechnical classification of the flysch KFG basis on the geophysical parameters in connection with the SMR classification proposed by M. Romana, for a rapid quantitative assessment of flysch slope stability. Examples of geophysical investigation of landslides and their stability are described on the basis of the KFG and SMR classification. The proper slope stability assessment has been pointed out as a major factor contributing to safe foundation and operation of engineering structures, especially hydrotechnical structure.

Landslide recognition is an important task for designers and contractors during the road construction process. The problems that contractors often face is insufficient recognition of the geological structure (at the design stage), too small area of purchased land under the "ZRiD’'decision, or the inability of fast responding to emerging threats. The studies described in this article shed more light on the complexity of slope deformation as a result of landslide processes. During the constructing of the expressway S-7, the problems related to deep landslide processes occurred, which most probably were associated with poorly recognized old “rocky-weathering material” type of landslide. The geological survey performed during the construction of this road, confirmed the occurrence of deep (>20 m) displacements, recorded by the inclinometer measurements. These deep displacements are linked to a large landslide with a main scarp located in the region of Mt.

The Magura Nappe borders along Stare Bystre-Szaflary line with the Pieniny Klippen Belt. It is thrust over the Fore-Magura and Silesian nappes at least 20 km. The Skawa line system of faults displaces the Magura Nappe margin 2 km northward. The Fore-Magura narrow zone runs from Milówka to the southern slope of Beskid Mały, where disappears from the surface. The Silesian Nappe is devided into two segments along the Skawa fault. The western one is characterized by the development of Cretaceous Godula Sandstones, eastern by the occurrence of Krosno Beds. The Sub-Silesian Nappe occurs as broken pieces along the northern margin of the Silesian Nappe, as well as in the tectonic windows within the Silesian Nappe. The Skole Unit is thrust over the Miocene deposits of Carpathian Foredeep in the area north of Wadowice and Andrychów.

Opis:
Preliminary results of dating landslides in the Gorce Mts. (Polish Outer Carpathians) are given, where ages of landslide activity have been poorly constrained. Four landslide zones with minerogenic mires (fens) were selected in order to determine the age of landslide movements, with depositional sequences of six fens being investigated by boreholes. Conventional radiocarbon dating of wood samples from mineral sediments sealing the landslide depressions was carried out to establish the age of landslide formation or rejuvenation. Loss on ignition analyses were obtained at 2.5 cm intervals along the cores to indicate possible delivery of allochthonous material into the peat bogs. Landslide formation in the Gorce Mts. corresponds to phases of mass movement hitherto identified in the Polish Outer Carpathians. Increased mass movements activity in the Gorce Mts. relate to cold and humid periods of the Holocene which occurred: ~11.1 ka cal BP, 8.6-8.0 cal BP; 6.5-5.9 ka cal BP, 4.8-4.5 cal BP, 3.3-2.5 cal BP and 1.75-1.35 cal BP. Loss on ignition analyses revealed changes in sedimentation in the landslide mires such as formation of mineral and illuvial horizons in peat sequences, and mineral covers overlying fens, associated with humid climatic phases of the Holocene.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki rozpoznawczych powierzchniowych badań geochemicznych wykonanych w wybranych strefach polskich i ukraińskich Karpat fliszowych.
The paper presents results of reconnaissance surface geochemical survey carried out in selected zones of the Polish and Ukrainian Flysch Carpathians. It intended to assess the possibility of occurrence of subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations. The survey was conducted along 8 profiles with total length of approximately 150 km, in general running from NE to SW, and consisted in taking samples of soil gas, in which concentrations of hydrocarbons and helium were determined. In sum, 315 samples were taken at points with the 500 m spacing. Concentrations of methane ranged from 0.9 ppm to almost 50 vol. %, concentrations of higher alkanes amounted to approximately 0.4 vol. % and concentrations of gaseous alkenes came up to approximately 132 ppm. Also presence of helium was recorded, its concentration amounting to 52 ppm. Variations in concentration of hydrocarbon constituents, graphically presented against the background of the existing geological and reservoir model, confirm the previous recognition of oil and gas fields and are indicative of opportunity of occurrence other, still undocumented subsurface accumulations.

Opis:
The development of fault pattern in the Silesian Nappe (Central Carpathian Depression) in the eastern part of Polish Outer Carpathians is outlined, from field observations and interpretation of air photos and radar images. Fault slip analysis and palaeostress reconstruction was applied to determine different systems of strike-slip, reverse and normal faults and the relative age of each system was determined. The results show a consistent evolution of fault systems which occurred as several episodes. Some of these episodes are local but others represent a regional pattern of faulting across the whole Polish Eastern Outer Carpathians. The beginning of fault evolution took place in Late Oligocene to Late Miocene times. The oldest phase is represented by reverse and thrust faults of system R1 with SW-NE compression; a younger phase involves origination of strike-slip faults belonging to system S1 (with the same direction of compression). Reverse (system R2) and strike-slip (system S2) faults were formed locally during a N-S compressional event. Dextral strike-slip faults of system S3 with simultanous opening of a dextral set of fault system S1 originated subsequently. The youngest events are represented by normal faults N1, N2, and N3 systems during NW-SE, and SW-NE to N-S extension.

W łupkowych warstwach szaflarskich i zakopiańskich (również warstwy z Brzegów) jej miąższość wynosi zaledwie do 30-50 m, zaś w piaskowcowych warstwach chochołowskich - 80-100 m.
The paper presents the analysis of the variability of water permeability with depth in the flysch deposits in the region of the Podhale Basin (Inner Carpathians). In the light of the performed studies it has been stated that the fractured and permeable 80-100 m thick zone is very important for the water flow in the rocks of the Podhale flysch. The thickness of this zone is diversified and depends mainly on lithologic development of the flysch deposits and on their morphological position. In the shale Szaflary and Zakopane Beds (also beds from Brzegi) its thickness reaches only 30-50 m while in the sandstone Chochołów Beds - 80-100 m. The obtained results are comparable with the regional statistic evaluation of such data from the region of the Outer Carpathians.

Miospore assemblages of the upper part of the Western European nitidus-carnosus (NC) miospore Zone of the early Serpukhovian have been distinguished. This agrees well with a general stratigraphic range of the Kyjovice Formation within the Go-E1a goniatite zones.

This paper concerns the identification of neotectonics structures on the basis of topographic maps analysis. The investigation parameter is valley floor width (VFW), this being applied to the drainage basin of the BeCva river, Czech Republic. It is firstly necessary to determine the theoretic profile of the VFW downstream increment. For its construction the magnitudo was used (Shreve, 1966). Then, the differences between the real VFW and the theoretical VFW were calculated. The differences were classified according to the associated bedrock lithology. The sections where differences were widely divergent from the average are assumed to be have been affected by neotectonics.

Opis:
The Kropivnik Fucoid Marls of the Polish Outer Carpathians contain numerous bioturbation structures, and comprise thin-bedded sandstones, hard and soft marlstones and muddy to clayey, mainly turbiditic shales. Comparison of three sections elucidated the stratigraphic and sedimentological controls on the distribution of the bioturbation structures, which are most common on the soles of sandstone beds, and within and on the tops of beds of hard marlstone overlain by shale. Most of the bioturbation structures are taxonomically undeterminable. Nevertheless, twenty seven ichnospecies, including one new ichnospecies (Taenidium recurvum), and seven forms of trace fossils of unknown taxonomic affinity were recognised. Most ichnotaxa were observed as individual specimens. Irregular structures apparently formed by the squashing of burrows filled with fluidised fill, called here turbidichnia, are quite common in some marlstone beds in the lower part of the succession. Planolites beverleyensis and Halopoa imbricata are the most frequent trace fossils on the lower surfaces of sandstone beds. Chondrites intricatus, Planolites beverleyensis and Thalassinoides suevicus represent the most common taxa in hard marlstones. Endoreliefs of Scolicia isp. are quite frequent in the top parts of marlstone beds in some parts of the succession. Other ichnotaxa were found either rarely or as single specimens only. The burrowing depth, reaching 15 cm below the tops of normally-graded rhythmic units, together with the relatively rich trace fossil assemblage and common occurrence of Planolites and Thalassinoides, is interpreted as indicating fully oxic conditions at the bottom of the sedimentary basin.

Opis:
Podkreślono zalety i ograniczenia metod wyznaczania modułu deformacji.
The work describes the results of deformation modulus tests in Carpathian flysch in the route of Emilia tunnel in Laliki located in Beskid Żywiecki mountains. Deformation modulus tests were completed in the stage of planning and constructing of the tunnel. Tests were carried on by different methods: dilatometer, pressuremeter, geomechanical classification and seismic. Tests results were close to similar for point methods: dilatometer and pressumeter. Deformation modulus determined by seismic method and empirical Barton relation and also empirical Serafim and Pereira relation was several times greater. Based on point methods deformation modulus changes were estimated for sandstone-shale and shale-sandstone rock masses of Carpathian flysch. Limitations and advantages of deformation modulus determine were underlined. It was pointed on test realization necessity in zones undisturbed by excavation influence and in unweathered zones. It is also needed to collaborate more reliable empirical relations for seismic method and geomechanical classification method in the conditions of weak rock mass, tectonically strong disturbed and flysch structured.

The lithologic variation and biostratigraphy of the Hieroglyphic Beds were examined in the Szczyrzyc Depression, where four lithologic complexes were distinguished. The biostratigraphy is based on agglutinated foraminifera and supported by scarce planktonic foraminifera. The lower part of the Hieroglyphic Beds contains non-characteristic, Ypresian foraminifers, including assemblages of small-sized Trochammina and at successively higher levels representatives of the Bartonian Ammodiscus latus Zone and the Priabonian Reticulophragmium gerochi Zone. The upper part of the Hieroglyphic Beds, composed of dark shales enriched in TOC (1–2%), corresponds to the deposits of the so-called Black Eocene, known from the Fore-Magura group of nappes. Redeposited flysch rocks resulting from episodes of subaqueous mass flow occur in the lower Bartonian part of the section.

On the SW slopes of the Mt. Kornuty (Magura Wątkowska mountain range in the Beskid Niski Mts.) is located one of the largest landslide areas in the Polish Flysch Carpathians. The morphotectonic analysis performed using contour diagrams and rose directional diagrams, made it possible to determine the direction of gravity mass movement. In total, over than 2500 measurements of the spatial orientation of joint surfaces were made within the landslide zone. Changing the direction of the tectonic anisotropy of the in situ and ex situ forms allowed conducting the morphogenetic analysis, i.e. specifying the types of gravitational movements. Besides the commonly occurring toppling, also rockfalls, rotation around the horizontal or vertical axis, and antithetical displacements (thelistric type) were observed. The combination of several types of gravitational movements of different age allows us to unequivocally say that it is a complex type of landslide.

The Cieszyn Beds (Jurassic/Cretaceous) in the Flysch Carpathians (Southern Poland) contain limestones, which create favourable conditions enabling the preservation of the Holocene mollusc shells in the overlying soils. The malacofauna found at the Tul Hill in the soil underlain by the limestones, and containig their fragments, confirms the conditions enabling migration of the species between the regions located south of the Carpathian range and the lowlands to the north. The dominating species are represented by the mollusc associations living in the woodlands. This study reports the presence of a unique species Orcula doliolum (Brug.) in the Tuł Hill area. Detailed biometric measurements on the shells of this species show no variation by comparison with similar studies conducted by previous authors at other isolated localities throughout Europe.

Arthrodendron borberensis sp. nov. is characterized by its long chambers (some exceeding 10 mm in length), its generally straight course, and rare branching at an acute angle. This large foraminifer lived infaunally within the sediment and possibly as epifauna after exhumation by erosion, prior to the deposition of the host turbiditic sandstone bed. Assemblages of smaller agglutinated foraminifera (a flysch-type fauna) and trace fossils (Nereites ichnofacies) point to a deep-sea environment for the discussed protist

The Outer Carpathians are known for a few sections, where transitions from the Upper Cretaceous to the Palaeogene, including the K-Pg boundary interval, were described. One of them, the Bąkowiec section in the Skole Nappe, was examined with reference to the record of biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironmental changes, mainly based on the analysis of calcareous nannofossil assemblages. This study shows no evidence for the K-Pg boundary; however, the presence of the nannofossil species Micula prinsii, marking the topmost Maastrichtian UC20dTP Zone, was noted. The appearance of this low-latitude taxon and relevant changes in the composition of nannofossil assemblages indicate an influx of Tethyan warm water into the northern Carpathian basins during the latest Maastrichtian, shortly before the K-Pg boundary event. Therefore, the authors infer that the upper part of the Bąkowiec section recorded the latest Maastrichtian warming of climate, probably triggered by Deccan volcanic activity.

Opis:
Field and laboratory works realized in last years allowed us to redefine one of the lithotectonic units of the western Sudetes, till now considered to be composed of Cambrian to Lower Carboniferous, stratigraphically coherent, volcano-sedimentary succession, as the Lower Carboniferous, probably lower Visean, wildflysch-to- flysch succession. This unit forms the westernmost part of the Kaczawa Complex and is situated at the boundary zone between the Kaczawa Mts. (Polish Sudetes) and the Görlitzer Schiefergebirge (Germany) or - at a larger scale - between the Sudetes and Lugian tectonostratigraphic zones of the Variscan orogen. Petrographical studies of rocks sampled from the larger allochthonous bodies (olistolithes and slide-sheets) of the wildflysch sequence have revealed some peculiar features of the lithic composition of this succession. They consist in the presence of: (1) - unmetamorphosed and metamorphosed volcanites with a distinct HP-overprint, characteristic of supra- subduction zones, gabbro-type plutonites, and relatively numerous detrital chromite grains indicating the occur- rence of ophiolite ultramafics in the source area; and (2) - large block(s) of rock composed of quartz (almost 100% SiO 2 ), previously interpreted as Palaeozoic quartz vein, now documented by the authors to be totally silicified primary evaporites, composed of gypsum (selenite), anhydrite and salt. The last finding would be of special significance as the first strong evidence of evaporites within the Variscan orogenic complex in Europe, if further studies confirm proposed here tectonic position of the silicified evaporites. General lithic composition of the Jędrzychowice/Ludwigsdorf wildflysch detrital material is characterised by the presence of such litholog ies, as: black and gray-to-green cherts, black shale mudstones and cherts, (turbi- dite-)siliciclastics, carbonates (both bioclastic and diagenetic), basic and acid, unmetamorphosed and epi-to- HP-metamorphosed volcanites, and gabbros and ultrabasites (the latter noted only by detrital chromites). Moreover, the siliciclastic material of the olistosthrome matrix discloses the presence of acid magmatic (granites) and high-grade metamorphics of gneiss-to- mica-schist type in the source areas. Such a compositio n of detrital material clearly reflects a typical tectonic mélange as the source terrane for the wildflysch deposit. It would mean that the Jędrzychowice/Ludwigsdorf wildflysch should be considered as the next, strong and unequivocal signal of large-scale tectonic mélange stage in a tectonic/geodynamic evolution of the Central European Palaeozoic orogenic system.

Opis:
Sixty six ichnotaxa have been recognized in Barremian-Lutetian deep-marine deposits of the Sinop- Boyabat Basin, north-central Turkey, which evolved from a backarc rift into a retroarc foreland, with two episodes of major shallowing. The blackish-grey shales of the Çađlayan Fm (Barremian-Cenomanian) contain low- diversity traces fossils of mobile sediment feeders influenced by low oxygenation. One of the oldest occurrences of Scolicia indicates early adaptation to burrowing in organic-rich mud. The "normal" flysch of the Coniacian- Campanian Yemişliçay Fm bears a low-diversity Nereites ichnofacies influenced by volcanic activity. The Maastrichtian-Late Palaeocene carbonate flysch of the Akveren Fm contains a Nereites ichnofacies of moderate diversity, which is impoverished in the uppermost part, where tempestites indicate marked shallowing. The overlying variegated muddy flysch of the Atbaşý Fm (latest Palaeocene-earliest Eocene) bears an impoverished Nereites ichnofacies, which is attributed to oligotrophy and reduced preservation potential. The sand-rich silici-clastic flysch of the Kusuri Fm (Early-Middle Eocene) bears a high-diversity Nereites ichnofacies, except for the topmost part, where tempestites and littoral bioclastic limestone reflect rapid shallowing due to the tectonic closure of the basin. The turbiditic channel-fill and proximal lobe facies show a reduced trace-fossil diversity, but abundant Ophiomorpha , which is typical of the Ophiomorpha rudis sub-ichnofacies of the Nereites ichnofacies. The high abundance of Ophiomorpha in the Kusuri Fm and its low abundance in the Akveren Fm are related to plant detritus supply. The Kusuri turbiditic system was fed by a large delta, supplying rich plant detritus, whereas the Akveren system was fed by a carbonate ramp that supplied little or no such material. The extension of the Nereites ichnofacies into the tempestite-bearing neritic deposits at the top of both the Akveren and Kusuri formations indicates the capacity of the deep-water ichnofauna to survive in a rapidly-shoaling restricted basin. Only the topmost shoreface sandstones of the Akveren Fm show sporadic Ophiomorpha ? nodosa, a typical shallow-marine trace fossil.

The types, abundance and origin of non-opaque heavy minerals from17 samples of sandstones and granule conglomerates of the Godula Beds, Upper Istebna Sandstone, Ciężkowice and Cergowa Sandstone (Upper Cretaceous–Paleogene) of the Beskid Śląski Mts. are described in this study. The descriptions are based on standard optical petrographic investigations and on scanning electronmicroscope (including electron microprobe) analysis. Garnet, rutile, zircon and tourmaline are the most common types of heavyminerals. Monazite and apatite occur subordinately, whereas epidote and spinel are sporadic. The heavy minerals from the Middle and Upper Godula Beds and the Upper Istebna Sandstone indicate original derivation mainly from metamorphic rocks of granulite and partly eclogite facies. Metasediments were significant constituents, with subordinate granitoids and hornfelses. Granitoids and corresponding pegmatites and aplites, as well as metapelites and metapsammites, appear to be the primary crystalline parent rocks of the Lower Godula Beds and the Ciężkowice Sandstone. Garnet-mica schists with subordinate granitoids and their pegmatites are interpreted as the main crystalline parent rocks of the Cergowa Sandstone. Sporadic chromian spinels and chromian pyrope indicate derivation from mafic and ultramafic rocks. Co-occurrence of rounded and fresh unabraded grains (sometimes euhedral) suggests a mixed provenance for the clastic material, both from crystalline and older sedimentary rocks.

Opis:
A whole-rock geochemical study was carried out on sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous Bozeş Formation in the southeastern part of the Apuseni Mountains (Romania) in order to constrain their provenance and depositional setting. The geochemical results were compared and integrated with previously reported provenance indicators, such as framework composition and heavy mineral assemblages. The chemical composition is similar for all samples investigated, with limited ranges for both major oxides and trace elements. The sandstones are potassic (Na2O/K2O < 1) and can be classified mainly as arenites with a few greywackes. Their immature to relatively mature character is revealed by the SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, ranging between 3.90 and 11.25, as well as their high Sr/Rb ratios. The source rocks were affected by weak to moderate chemical alteration, as indicated by the specific index (CIA), with values between 47 and 71. The detrital material was influenced by a little hydraulic sorting during transportation, while post-depositional eftects were limited to K-metasomatism. Two major potential source types were identified based on the chemical composition of the samples studied: a felsic magmatic arc and a recycled, quartzose metasedimentary basement. Our data indicate that the depositional setting is likely to be on a convergent margin. The results are consistent with uplifted and exhumed Transylvanian basement as the major source area.

Zbigniew Sujkowski was a co-founder of Polish sedimentary petrography and a pioneer of sedimentology. After studying geology at the University of Warsaw (1921–1925), he worked in 1927–1929 with Prof. Lucien Cayeux at Collège de France in Paris. He specialized in petrographic-sedimentological studies of Cretaceous deposits in Poland, but especially of siliceous rocks. His treatise on diagenesis, published posthumously in 1958, is among the classics of world geological literature. Zbigniew Sujkowski was a Polish patriot. In the period 1914–1920, he participated in the armed struggle for the independence of Poland, and during World War II – in the armed resistance movement against German occupation as the organizer of subversion. At the end of the war, he was in London; his return to Poland was impossible from political reasons. Sujkowski immigrated to Canada and took a job at MacMaster University in Hamilton. He died tragically in an accident.

The Szlachtowa and the Opaleniec formations (Pieniny Klippen Belt, Poland) contain rich dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. The one from the Szlachtowa Formation (previously known as the "black flysch") is dominated by specimens representing the genera Dissiliodinium and Nannoceratopsis. The age of dinoflagellate cysts from this lithostratigraphic unit can be assumed as the Aalenian-Bajocian. Another assemblage occurs in the Opaleniec Formation. Being taxonomically more diverse, it contains several species including Ctenidodinium combazii, C. ornatum, Endoscrinium asymmetricum, Epiplosphaera gochtii, E. reticulata, Atopodinium prostatum, Adnatosphaeridium caulleryi. Age-range of this assemblage can be estimated as the Bajocian-Bathonian. No indications of Jurassic fossil redeposition that could justify suggestions of Cretaceous age of these lithostratigraphic units have been found.

Opis:
The study focuses on a large olistostrome unit (~200 m thick and 4 km in strike-parallel extent) embedded in the Mid-Eocene shaly Hieroglyphic Formation of the Silesian Nappe, exposed in the Rożnów Lake area. Foraminifer biostratigraphy and petrographic comparisons are used to identify the provenance of olistoliths. The olistostrome is tripartite with respect of its olistolith composition. The lower part of the olistostrome abounds in olistoliths of sandstones derived from the Early Eocene turbiditic Ciężkowice Formation, whereas the middle part is dominated by olistoliths of Early Eocene bathyal mudshales. The upper part contains olistoliths of Middle Eocene turbiditic “banded sandstones”, known from the Hieroglyphic Formation and deposited in the bathyal zone above the CCD. The bathyal provenance of the olistostrome contrasts with the abyssal origin of the hosting green shales. The olistostrome unit is inferred to be composite, emplaced in the earliest Bartonian or at the Lutetian/ Bartonian transition by a series of at least three large debris flows that closely followed one another. Biostratigra- phical data and slump-fold vergence suggest resedimentation from the bathyal northern slope of the Silesian Cordillera that bounded the abyssal Silesian Basin to the south. Northward movement of the thrust-formed cordillera must have warped up the base-of-slope deposits of the Ciężkowice Formation, causing their gravita- tional collapse. This event destabilized the former lower-slope muddy deposits, resulting in a second phase of resedimentation by retrogressive slumping, which led to the collapse of mid-slope sandy turbidites. The slope failures involved contemporaneous Mid-Eocene sediment with an admixture of foraminifers derived from the upper slope or shelf margin and with exotic bedrock debris shed from the eroded cordillera crest. The catastrophic multi-phase emplacement of the olistostrome marked the last major thrusting pulse of the second (Late Cretaceous–Late Eocene) stage of tectonic evolution of the Outer Carpathian accretionary prism.

The numerous landslides which have developed in the mostly Cretaceous to Eocene turbiditic rocks of the Silesian Beskid are genetically and geometrically controlled by bedrock structural features, the Biała Wisełka Landslide Complex being no exception. Its location is in the headwater area of the Wisła River, on the slopes of Mt. Barania Góra (1220 m a.s.l.). The bedrock is represented by flysch strata of the Silesian Nappe (Outer Carpathian Fold-and-Thrust Belt), or, more specifically, the Upper Cretaceous turbiditic Upper Godula and Lower Istebna Beds of the Godula Thrust Sheet. The research work consisted in their mapping and structural analysis, facilitated by the use of a high-resolution digital elevation model based on LiDAR data. A comparative analysis enabled the determination of the relationships between landslides and the bedrock structure. The study results point to significant roles being played by the joint network, fault systems, the structural arrangement and the lithology of rock strata in the initiation and evolution of the studied landslide complex. An additional result of the methods applied methods was the identification and characterization of previously unknown fault zones in the study area.

The article presents the results of the dendrogeomorphological study of the activity of the Sawicki landslide, located in the Beskid Niski Mts (Polish Flysch Carpathians). The study was conducted within two study sites in the lower part of the landslide. The landslide movements were dated using the dendrogeomorphological method, basing on the eccentricity indicators calculated for the two coniferous species, i.e. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver fir (Abies alba). It was found landslide activity in years: 1899, 1901, 1905, 1910, 1913–1914, 1920–1921, 1929–1931, 1935, 1937, 1945, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1984–1985, 1990, 1992–1993, 1997, 2003–2004, 2006, 2010–2012. The greatest activity was characterized for the northern part of the study site B and the south-western slopes of the Szklarki stream valley (study site A). Studies have shown only a partial dependence between precipitation and landslide episodes. The data were confronted with the results of dendrogeomorphological studies, conducted in the northern and central parts of the landslide. The results demonstrate the significant complexity of mass movements within large-area landslide.

Trace fossils and lithofacies have been studied for the first time in the Numidian Formation (Upper Oligocene–Lower Miocene) of the Ouarsenis Mountains in Algeria to interpret their depositional environment. Twenty-two ichnogenera have been recognized in eight lithofacies of three main facies associations in four representative sections. Distribution of the trace fossils is dependent on the facies. Most trace fossils are dominated by post-depositional forms (62%) and occur in fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstones of facies F4. They belong to the Ophiomorpha rudis, Paleodictyon and the Nereites ichnosubfacies of the Nereites ichnofacies. The O. rudis ichnosubfacies is recorded in 1) medium- to very thick-bedded sandstones of the facies association FA1, interbedded with thinner sandstone beds of the facies F2 and F4 in the upper unit of the sections studied, which were deposited in channel fill and levee-overbank environments, and in 2) medium- to thin-bedded sandstones of the facies association FA2 in the lower unit of the Kef Maiz and the Ain Ghanem sections, which were deposited in isolated narrow channels within the mud-dominated part of the depositional system and occasionally fed with turbiditic sand. The Paleodictyon ichnosubfacies occurs in thin- to medium-bedded sandstones (FA2) of the lower units in the Ain Ghanem and Kef Maiz sections and the lowest part of the upper unit of the Kef Maiz section, which were deposited in channel margin or foremost channel-to-levee-overbank areas. The Nereites ichnosubfacies is recorded in thin-bedded sandstones (FA2), which were deposited in crevasse-splays or small lobes on a basin floor invaded occasionally by turbidites against a background of pelagic and hemipelagic sedimentation.

Opis:
The Carpathian Flysch Belt represents a Paleogene accretionary wedge (External Western Carpathians  – EWC) located in front of the narrow Pieniny Klippen Belt zone and the Cretaceous Central Western Carpathian nappe stack. The Flysch Belt is formed of several nappes thrust over the slope of the European Platform in the Miocene. This study is focused on the uppermost Magura Nappe, which consists of the Rača, Bystrica and Krynica subunits. As there are no relics of pre-Miocene oceanic crust in the EWC, the sedimentary rocks of the Flysch Belt are the only source of information available about the Alpine collisional events. U-Pb geochronology was applied to detrital rutile from sandstones of the Magura Nappe in order to better understand the closure of the Alpine Tethys in the Western Carpathians. Ten medium-sized sandstone samples were collected across the Bystrica and Krynica subunits in the Nowy Targ region in southern Poland. The samples represent synorogenic clastic sediments with inferred deposition ages between the Late Cretaceous and Oligocene. Approximately 200 rutile grains were separated from each sandstone sample and around half of them were selected for further analyses. The age and appearance (shape, inclusions, zoning etc.) of the dated rutile show significant variations, suggesting derivation from various sources. The most prominent age peaks represent the Variscan (c. 400–280 Ma) and Alpine (c. 160–90 Ma) tectonic events which are well-pronounced in all but the oldest dated sample. It is also noteworthy that four distinct Alpine signals were detected in our rutile data set. The two most prominent peaks with ages of 137–126 Ma and 115–105 Ma are found in majority of the samples. In two sandstone samples, deposited between the Eocene –Oligocene and the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene, the youngest peak of 94–90 Ma appears. Another peak of 193–184 Ma is also present in these two samples, as well as in another sandstone deposited between the Paleocene and the Eocene. In addition, most samples show few Proterozoic ages (approx. 1770 Ma, 1200 Ma, 680 Ma and 600 Ma). Since metamorphic rutile requires relatively high pressure to crystallize, its formation in the course of an orogeny is possible in a subduction setting. Hence, our new age data may reflect tectonic events related to subduction of oceanic crust and overlying sediments. Tentatively, we propose that recognizable events include the Jurassic subduction of the Meliata Ocean (~180–155 Ma), the Early Cretaceous thrust stacking of the Veporic and Gemeric domains (140–105 Ma) and possibly the Late Cretaceous subduction of the Váh Ocean (c. 90 Ma). In addition to dating, the Zr content of the rutile formed during the Alpine orogeny was measured by electron microprobe at the AGH University in Krakow. The amount of Zr varies between 37–420 ppm in almost all grains, with the exception of 4 rutile grains where ~1100 ppm was reached. The Zr in rutile thermometer, based on the approach of Kohn (2020) was used to calculate the possible metamorphic conditions at 450–650°C and >7.5 kbar. This data set corroborates formation of the Alpine rutile under relatively high pressure and rather low to moderate pressure/temperature gradient, i.e. typical of subduction-related tectonic environments.

Our dendrogeomorphological analysis was completed for 4 landslides, situated in the municipality of Węgierska Górka in the Beskid Śląski Mountains in Southern Poland. The local landslides pose a direct threat to the newly designed S-69 expressway running through the north-western part of the municipality. The research material consisted of 127 samples, collected with the use of a Pressler increment borer, from three species of coniferous trees (Norway spruce, Scots pine, and Silver fir). The landslide activity periods were identified on the basis of the splitting of the dendrochronological curves representing the upslope and downslope parts of the tree trunks. The largest number of the studied trees indicated reactions to substrate mass movements in 1964, 1971, 1972, 1984, 1994, 1997, 1998, and 2010. The detailed locations of the sampled trees allowed us to reconstruct the activities of particular landslide sections in time. We identified the fact that parts of the landslides located downslope of the planned road S-69 are more active than parts of the same landslides located above it on the slope. Geological conditions in the studied area favour landslide activity while precipitation is the main triggering factor of landslides.

Opis:
Limestones designated the Štramberk-type are the most common carbonate exotic clasts (exotics) embedded in the uppermost Jurassic–Miocene flysch deposits of the Polish Outer Carpathians. About 80% of stratigraphically determinable carbonate exotics from the Silesian, Sub-Silesian and Skole units (nappes) are of Tithonian (mostly)–Berriasian (sporadically Valanginian) age. A study of these exotics revealed eight main facies types: coral-microbial boundstones (FT 1), microencruster-microbial-cement boundstones (FT 2), microbial and microbial-sponge boundstones (FT 3), detrital limestones (FT 4), foraminiferal-algal limestones (FT 5), peloidalbioclastic limestones (FT 6), ooid grainstones (FT 7), and mudstones-wackestones with calpionellids (FT 8). Štramberk-type limestones in Poland and the better known Štramberk Limestone in the Czech Republic are remnants of lost carbonate platforms, collectively designated the Štramberk Carbonate Platform. Narrow platforms were developed on intra-basinal, structural highs (some of them are generalized as the Silesian Ridge), with their morphology determined by Late Jurassic synsedimentary tectonics. An attempt was made to reconstruct the facies distribution on the Tithonian–earliest Cretaceous carbonate platform. In the inner platform, coral-microbial patch-reefs (FT 1) grew, while the upper slope of the platform was the depositional setting for the microencruster-microbial-cement boundstones (FT 2). Microbial and microbial-sponge boundstones (FT 3), analogous to the Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian boundstones of the northern Tethyan shelf (also present among exotics), were developed in a deeper setting. In the inner, open part of the platform, foraminiferal-algal limestones (FT 5) and peloidal-bioclastic limestones (FT 6) were deposited. Poorly sorted, detrital limestones (FT 4), including clastsupported breccias, were formed mainly in a peri-reefal environment and on the margin of the platform, in a high-energy setting. Ooid grainstones (FT 7), rarely represented in the exotics, were formed on the platform margin. Mudstones-wackestones with calpionellids (FT 8) were deposited in a deeper part of the platform slope and/or in a basinal setting. In tectonic grabens, between ridges with attached carbonate platforms, sedimentation of the pelagic (analogous to FT 8) and allodapic (“pre-flysch”) Cieszyn Limestone Formation took place. The most common facies are FT 4 and FT 1. Sedimentation on the Štramberk Carbonate Platform terminated in the earliest Cretaceous, when the platform was destroyed and drowned. It is recorded in a few exotics as thin, neptunian dykes (and large dykes in the Štramberk Limestone), filled with dark, deep-water limestones. Reefal facies of the Štramberk Carbonate Platform share similarities in several respects (e.g., the presence of the microencrustermicrobial-cement boundstones) with reefs of other intra-Tethyan carbonate platforms, but clearly differ from palaeogeographically close reefs and coral-bearing facies of the epicontinental Tethyan shelf (e.g., coeval limestones from the subsurface of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Lublin Upland in Poland; the Ernstbrunn Limestone in Austria and Czech Republic). Corals in the Štramberk Limestone and Štramberk-type limestones are the world’s most diverse coral assemblages of the Jurassic–Cretaceous transition. The intra-basinal ridge (ridges), traditionally called the Silesian Cordillera, which evolved through time from an emerged part of the Upper Silesian Massif to an accretionary prism, formed the most important provenance area for carbonate exotic clasts in the flysch of the Silesian Series. They are especially common in the Lower Cretaceous Hradiště Formation and the Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene Istebna Formation. The Baška-Inwałd 204 M. HOFFMANN Et Al. In the Polish Outer Carpathians, shallow-water carbonate sedimentation is recorded only by carbonate clasts, redeposited bioclasts, and very rare, small, unrooted, poorly exposed klippen. Clasts of limestones are exotic to the dominant siliciclastic, uppermost Jurassic–Miocene flysch deposits. They were derived from extrabasinal and intra-basinal source areas of the Carpathian rocks, which periodically emerged and were destroyed. Such rocks were described as “exotic” since the 19th century (“exotischen Graniten”, “exotische Blöcke”; Morlot, 1847; Hohenegger, 1861). In the general geological literature, the term “exotic clasts” is usually used (Flügel, 2010, p. 172), whereas in the Polish geological literature, the term “exotics” (Polish “egzotyki” including also carbonate exotics), is also commonly applied. On the basis of fossils, facies and microfacies, these clasts (pebbles, rarely blocks) are mostly described as Devonian–Carboniferous (Malik, 1978, 1979; Burtan et al., 1983; Tomaś et al., 2004) and Upper Jurassic–lowermost Cretaceous (the present paper and references therein), more rarely Middle Jurassic (Książkiewicz, 1935, 1956a; Barczyk, 1998; Olszewska and Wieczorek, 2001), Early Cretaceous (Oszczypko et al., 1992, 2006, 2020; Krobicki et al., 2005), Late Cretaceous (Książkiewicz, 1956a; Gasiński, 1998) and Palaeogene in age (Leszczyński, 1978; Rajchel and Myszkowska, 1998; Leszczyński et al., 2012; Minor-Wróblewska, 2017). At the beginning of these studies, the focus was on small, unrooted klippen, namely the Andrychów Klippen (called also Klippes) near Wadowice (Zeuschner, 1849; Hohenegger, 1861; Uhlig, 1904; Książkiewicz, 1935, 1971b; Nowak, 1976; Gasiński, 1998; Olszewska and Wieczorek, 2001), and in Kruhel Wielki, near Przemyśl (Niedźwiedzki, 1876; Wójcik, 1907, 1913, 1914; Bukowy and Geroch, 1956; Morycowa, 1988; Olszewska et al., 2009), now poorly exposed. Subsequently, exotic pebbles, much more common and providing data on more facies, were studied more frequently. The first attempt to describe exotics, including crystalline rocks, was presented by Nowak (1927). Jurassic–Cretaceous carbonate exotics at Bachowice, containing facies unknown at other localities in the Polish Outer Carpathians, were described by Książkiewicz (1956a). The preliminary results of studies, which encompassed the entire spectrum of carbonate exotics from the western part of the Polish Outer Carpathians, were presented by Burtan et al. (1984). Malik (1978, 1979) described both Palaeozoic and Mesozoic carbonate clasts in the Hradiště Sandstone of the Silesian Unit, but other studies were mostly concerned with the Štramberk-type limestones from selected outcrops. The studies of these limestones, if concerned with exotics at many localities, were focused on their fossil content (e.g., Kołodziej, 2003a; Bucur et al., 2005; Ivanova and Kołodziej, 2010; Kowal-Kasprzyk, 2014, 2018) or presented only the preliminary results of facies studies (e.g., Hoffmann and Kołodziej, 2008; Hoffmann et al., 2008). Carbonate platforms, the existence of which was deciphered from detrital carbonate components, are called lost carbonate platforms (e.g., Belka et al., 1996; Flügel, 2010; Kukoč et al., 2012). Clasts and other shallowwater components are, metaphorically, witnesses to lost carbonate factories (the term is taken from Coletti et al., 2015). Analyses of the age and lithology of exotic clasts have been applied in the reconstruction of the provenance areas of the clasts and their palaeogeography and the development of the sedimentary sequences of the Polish Outer Carpathians (e.g., Książkiewicz, 1956b, 1962, 1965; Unrug, 1968; Oszczypko, 1975; Oszczypko et al., 1992, 2006; Hoffmann, 2001; Krobicki, 2004; Słomka et al., 2004; Malata et al., 2006; Poprawa and Malata, 2006; Poprawa et al., 2006a, b; Strzeboński et al., 2017; Kowal-Kasprzyk et al., 2020). Štramberk-type limestones are most common among the exotics. It is a field term that refers to limestones, mostly beige in colour, that are supposed to be the age and facies equivalents of the Tithonian–lower Berriasian Štramberk Limestone in Moravia (Czech Republic; Eliáš and Eliášová, 1984; Picha et al., 2006). The Štramberk Limestone and the Štramberk-type limestones of both countries were deposited on platforms, attached to the intrabasinal ridges and margins of the basin of the Outer Carpathians. These platforms are collectively termed the Štramberk Carbonate Platform. The terms “Štramberk Limestone” and “Štramberk-type limestones” have been widely used in the area of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire for the field description of shallow-water limestones of assumed Late Jurassic age, usually occurring within flysch deposits of the Outer Carpathians. Upper Jurassic–lowermost Cretaceous shallow-water limestones in Romania (commonly forming mountains or ridges, e.g., Pleş et al., 2013, 2016), in Bulgaria and Serbia (Tchoumatchenco et al., 2006), and Ukraine (Krajewski and Schlagintweit, 2018), and in Turkey (Masse et al., 2015) sometimes are referred to as the Štramberk-type limestones as well. In the Austrian-German literature similar limestones in the Alps are known as the Plassen Limestone (e.g., Steiger and Wurm, 1980; Schlagintweit et al., 2005). Biostratigraphic studies revealed that some carbonate clasts, accounting for several percent of the exotics and commonly Ridge and the Sub-Silesian Ridge were the source areas for clasts from the Silesian and Sub-Silesian units (e.g., in the Hradiště Formation), while the Northern (Marginal) Ridge was the source for clasts from the Skole Unit (e.g., in the Maastrichtian–Paleocene Ropianka Formation).

In the Paratethys Sea, isolation, the development of anoxia and stratification of the water column resulted in deposition of organic-rich sediments. In the Western Carpathians (Central Paratethys) these sediments now lie within the Menilite Formation. Whereas the Eocene-Oligocene transition has been studied in the Western Carpathians and is documented by dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, the dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Menilite Formation members has been uncertain. The Popiele Member and the Menilite Formation exposed at Aksmanice (Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe, Western Outer Carpathians) reflect palaeogeographic changes at the beginning of the Oligocene. These previously studied deposits have been assigned to lithostratigraphic units, though without biostratigraphic documentation. The age of the Menilite Fm. in the Carpathian sedimentary succession is particularly interesting due to the diachronous character of the facies development. In this study we provide biostratigraphic data based on well-preserved organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. The marker taxa recovered indicate a Rupelian age (Early Oligocene) for the Menilite Fm. A different assemblage occurs in the Popiele Member underlying the Menilite Fm. Here, the dinoflagellate cysts are more diverse and abundant, and represented by typical Eocene taxa attributed to Areosphaeridium spp. and Charlesdowniea spp. The Popiele Member may be assigned to the Priabonian (Late Eocene).

Opis:
We applied dendrochronological analysis to study an extensive (~2.5 km long) complex-type landslide in the Beskid Niski Mountains (Polish Flysch Carpathians), which was rejuvenated in historical time (the earliest transformation occurred in 1913). We used three complementary methods (dating of eccentricity of annual growth rings, eccentricity indices, and analysis of reaction wood), based on seven species of deciduous and coniferous trees. A total of 204 trees were sampled and 408 cores collected using a Pressler increment borer. Based on the dendrochronological analysis, the activity of various parts of the landslide in the past century is presented, which appears to have been diverse and influenced mostly by precipitation. The upper part of the landslide was active from the 1920s until the 1940s. In the middle section of the landslide, intensifications of gravitational movement were repeatedly recorded after intense rainfalls throughout the entirety of the last century. The highest landslide activity was dendrochronologically detected in the 1980s and 1990s. Increasing landslide activity during so-called “dry years” may have been related to quick drying of the bedrock, resulting in changes in rock strength parameters. Our results indicate significant susceptibility of this particular slope-valley geosystem in response to even slight hydrogeological changes (including dryness), which can trigger ground movement.

Opis:
Sheet and rill erosion plays an important role in the transformation of agricultural slopes in the Carpathians. It is an episodic process of short duration which can take place both in the winter and summer hydrological half-years as a result of meteorological short-term and high-intensity events like short downpours, intense continuous rainfall and rapid thaws. The climate of the Carpathians is characterized by the variability of its parameters caused by the growing height of the mountain belts from the north to the south as well as by the considerable latitudinal extent of the mountain range. The summer season is crucial to annual precipitation totals. Maximum daily precipitation totals are the result of intense continuous rainfall (mainly in June and Juty) and short local downpours (mainly in May). In the flysch Polish Carpathians the role of sheet and rill erosion on agricultural slopes is different in areas characterized by mountain relief (Beskidy Mountains) and foothill relief, because the two regions have different water circulation patterns and weathered material displacement patterns. Another crucial factor that helps account for the differences in the effectiveness of sheet and rill erosion is vegetation cover. The lack of sufficiently long measurement series or diversification between regions of the Carpathians makes it difficult to determine the frequency of extreme sheet and rill erosion and their recurrence, which means it is not possible to define the quantitative criteria for establishing extreme sheet and rill erosion processes for the whole area of the Polish Carpathians. The aim of this paper is to examine the criteria on the basis of which extreme sheet and rill erosion on agricultural slopes has so far been determined as well as the effects and role of the process in the transformation of the slopes.

Mapy prezentujące warunki stabilności terenu stanowią podstawę do tworzenia map zagrożeń osuwiskami. Ocena stabilności terenu, morfologii, warunków geologicznych i hydrogeologicznych pozwala na wyznaczanie quasi-jednorodnych stref o określonym stopniu zagrożenia osuwiskami. Mapy takie wykorzystują władze administracyjne przy tworzeniu planów regionalnych i miejskich.

he paper deals with exotic clasts of Lithothamnium calcarenites and calcirudites occurring in the central part of the Skole Unit. The clasts are confined exclusively to those lithosomes of the Babica Clay (upper Paleocene) which occur within the Variegated Shale Formation, overlying the Bircza Lithothamnium Limestone Bed (BLLB). The exotic clasts represent fragments of talus deposits, formed due to degradation of algal reefs which were situated along the northern margin of the Skole basin. They were transported into the basin by dense cohesive flows that built pebbly mudstones lithosomes of the Babica Clay. Exotic clasts of calcarenites contain silicified cores formed after clast deposition. The age of exotic rocks was determined as the turn of the Early and Late Paleocene basing on foraminifers.
Scharakteryzowano grupę litotamniowych, kalkarenitowych i kalcyrudytowych egzotyków, z centralnej części jednostki skolskiej.

According to uniaxial compression tests, variable fracturing, i.e. intragranular, intergranular or transgranular is strictly related to mineral composition and fabric of a rock. Basing on their analysis, deformation characteristics as well as the course of acoustic emission, it is possible to assess whether the resulting defects are caused by processes of extension, shearing or both of them.
W skałach fliszu karpackiego poddanych procesowi jednoosiowego ściskania obserwowano zróżnicowane procesy pękania intragranularnego, intergranularnego i transgranularnego.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań fizykochemicznych i mikrobiologicznych wytypowanych wód chlorkowych z obszaru Karpat fliszowych z miejscowości: Rabka-Zdrój, Krynica-Zdrój, Poręba Wielka, Wysowa-Zdrój, Lubatówka, Iwonicz-Zdrój i Rymanów-Zdrój, oraz solankę z dewońskich utworów podłoża Karpat z Ustronia-Zdroju. We wszystkich próbkach wody stwierdzono obecność mikroorganizmów.
The article presents the results of physicochemical and microbiological tests of selected chloride waters from the Flysch Carpathians in Rabka-Zdrój, Krynica-Zdrój, Poręba, Wysowa-Zdrój, Lubatówka, Iwonicz-Zdrój and Rymanów-Zdrój, as well as brine from Devonian deposits of the Carpathians in Ustroń-Zdrój. These chloride waters are represented by brackish water, salt water and brines characterized by mineralization ranging from 1.5 to 100.3 g/dm3. They are curative mineral waters used in balneotherapy. The presence of microorganisms was found in all tested waters. The number of cultivated microorganisms was, however, generally very low. In the case of two intakes (Ustroń U-3 and Rabka IG 2), no microorganisms have been cultivated. The identification of the isolates obtained confirms other reports indicating that the species composition of groundwater microorganisms is closely related to the chemical composition. In many intakes of brines, for example, either halophilic or halotolerant microorganisms have been found.

Opis:
The Jurassic–Cretaceous fine-clastic dark deposits of the Grajcarek Unit (Pieniny Klippen Belt, Carpathians, Poland) show lithological similarities, which may lead to erroneous age correlations. Their well-exposed outcrop at Szczawnica-Zabaniszcze allows detailed sampling for their precise age determination. For this purpose, dinoflagellate cysts have been studied from a set of samples collected from the Szlachtowa, Opaleniec, Pieniny Limestone, Kapuśnica and Wronine formations exposed at that site (additional sample from the Pieniny Limestone Formation was studied). The Szlachtowa Formation, a very characteristic lithostratigraphic unit, which consists of black shale and sandstones extremely rich in mica flakes, occasionally referred to literature as the so-called "black flysch", yielded rich and well-preserved assemblages. Their age is Middle Jurassic, spanning the Aalenian to Lower Bajocian. The exposures of the Szlachtowa Formation at Szczawnica-Zabaniszcze are located close to the outcrops of the Opaleniec Formation. The calcareous spotted shale from this lithostratigraphic unit yielded rich dinoflagellate cyst assemblage characteristic for Late Bathonian (Early Callovian). The Opaleniec Formation tectonically contacts with very similar non-calcareous spotted shale of the Wronine Formation. Its age, based on infrequent dinoflagellate cysts is Aptian–Albian. Similar, Lower Aptian age was concluded for the Kapuśnica Formation. Late Barremian–earliest Aptian dinoflagellate cysts have been found in the underlying topmost part of the Pieniny Limestone Formation.

Opis:
Tourmaline populations studied from the Campanian-Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Polish Carpathians, represent a mixture of first-cycle and polycyclic grains. The tourmalines of the deposits studied display very strong resemblance in terms of optical features and chemical composition. They belong mostly to the schorl-dravite series with a minor contribution of tourmalines of foititic or Mg-foititic composition. Euhedral tourmalines originated from metasedimentary rocks, while the rounded grains crystallised in Li-poorgranitic rocks or in pegmatites, Al-poor and Al-rich metasedimentary rocks. Most of the tourmalines studied crystallised during a single igneous or metamorphic event. However, tourmal ines form ng in evolving chemical conditions as well as polymetamorphic grains (having a metamorphic detrital core and metamorphic overgrowths) are also present. The chemical composition of the metamorphic tourmalines studied indicates theirformation in medium-grade metamorphic conditions. This is supported by the crystallisation temperature of the garnet-biotite inclusion present in one of rounded metamorphic tourma l ines from the Ropianka Formation. The euhedral grains derive from metasediments, directly from a massif located close to the Skole Basin. The scarcity of euhedral grains in the tourmaline populations studied suggests that their source rocks were poor in these minerals. The direct sources of rounded tourmalines (most probably polycyclic grains), may have been Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Skole Basin foreland or crystalline rocks of remote source areas. The initial igneous and metamorphic host rocks of the tourma l ines may have been crystall ine domains of the Bohemian Massif and/or the crystalline basement of Brunovistulicum.

The swelling and compressibility tests were performed on clay-slates samples from landslides situated near the water reservoir at Świnna Poręba. The texture clay-shale reflected by the lamination, can be regarded as a symptom of monoclinal anisotropy. This texture makes soil swelling unevenly on the top surface, water also much easier penetrates deep layers between the laminae.

LithostratigraphyandbiostratigraphyoftheBystricaandRaèasubunitsoftheMaguraNappehavebeen studied in the southern part of the Beskid Wyspowy Range and on the northern slopes of the Gorce Range (Polish part of the Western Flysch Carpathians). Six new lithostratigraphic units (Jasień Formation, Białe Formation, Jaworzynka Formation, Szczawina Sandstone Formation, Krzysztonów Member, and Ropianka Formation) of the UpperAlbian–Palaeocene age have been established, and five other units (Malinowa Shale Formation, Hałuszowa Formation, Łabowa Shale Formation, Beloveza Formation, Bystrica Formation) have been additionally described. The newly created formations as well as the Malinowa Shale Formation and the Hałuszowa Formation have been included to a new Mogielica Group of units (Upper Albian–Palaeocene). This group of units passes upwards into the Beskid Group (Eocene–Oligocene). The Mogielica Group, spanning over 40 myrs, represents the turbidite depositional system, separated by highstand variegated clays which can be correlated with minor sequences in terms of sequence stratigraphy. The following biostratigraphic zones have been recognised in the Cretaceous–Lower/Middle Eocene deposits: Plectorecurvoides alternans, Bulbobaculites problematicus, Uvigerinammina jankoi, U. jankoi-C. gigantea, Caudammina gigantea, Remesella varians, Rzehakina fisistomata, Glomospira div. sp., and Saccamminoides carpathicus. A few lithostratigraphic units consisting of calcareous sediments have been correlated with the standard calcareous nannoplankton zonation and the chronostratigraphy.
Płaszczowina magurska, największa jednostka tektoniczna zewnętrznych Karpat Zachodnich (Fig. 1), jest całkowicie odkorzeniona od swego podłoża. Utwory serii magurskiej starsze od turonu znane są jedynie z jednostki Grajcarka (sukcesja magurska pienińskiego pasa skałkowego), wiercenia Obidowa IG-1 oraz z kilku niewielkich odsłonięć przy południowym obrzeżeniu okna tektonicznego Mszany Dolnej (Fig. 2, por. Birkenmajer & Oszczypko, 1989). W jednostce Grajcarka, ponad głębokowodnymi utworami jury górnej i neokomu, występuje “czarny flisz” formacji wronińskiej (alb-cenoman) oraz zielone łupki radiolariowe cenomanu (formacja hulińska) (Birkenmajer, 1977, por. Oszczypko et al., 2004). Szaro-zielone łupki plamiste albu-cenomanu, znane z południowego obrzeżenia okna tektonicznego Mszany Dolnej, zdefiniowane zostały w pracy jako formacja łupków z Jasienia. Formacja ta, o miąższości niemniejszej od kilkunastu metrów, zazębia się w stropie z łupkami czerwonymi formacji z Malinowej. W Beskidzie Wyspowym i Gorcach ponad łupkami pstrymi formacji z Malinowej (turon-santon/kampan) oraz poniżej łupków pstrych formacji z Łabowej (eocen dolny i środkowy) występują zróżnicowane facjalnie osady fliszowe, zaliczane dotychczas do różnych nieformalnych jednostek litostratygraficznych, takich jak: warstwy z Kaniny, piaskowce ze Szczawiny (strefa bystrzyck i raczańska) oraz warstwy z Jaworzynki (strefa raczańka i strefa Siar). Najwyższą pozycję stratygraficzną zajmują utwory tradycyjnie nazywane “warstwami inoceramowymi” lub ropianieckimi. Na podstawie szczegółowych badań lito- i biostratygraficznych wyżej wymienionych utworów kredy górnej i paleocenu, zaproponowano cztery nowe formalne jednostki litostratygraficzne w randze formacji: formację z Białego (dotychczasowe warstwy z Kaniny), formację piaskowców ze Szczawiny (dotychczasowe piaskowce ze Szczawiny), formację z Jaworzynki (dotychczasowe warstwy z Jaworzynki) oraz formację ropianiecką (dotychczasowe warstwy ropianieckie). Ponadto badano pięć innych górnokredowo-eoceńskich formacji: łupków z Malinowej, z Hałuszowej, łupków z Łabowej, beloweskiej i bystrzyckiej, które dodatkowo opisano. Wszystkie nowo zdefiniowane formacje oraz formacje: łupków z Malinowej oraz z Hałuszowej, włączono do nowo wydzielonej grupy Mogielicy (górny alb-paleocen). Grupa ta przechodzi w stropie w grupę beskidzką (eocen-oligocen) opisaną przez Bir- kenmajera & Oszczypkę (1989). Grupa Mogielicy, obejmująca okres czasowy liczący ponad 40 mln lat, reprezentowana jest przez turbidytowy system depozycyjny, ograniczony w stropie i spągu przez osady łupków pstrych, związanych z okresem wysokiego względnego poziomu morza. Wśród zespołów mikrofauny otwornicowej albu - dolnego/ środkowego eocenu, znalezionych w badanych utworach płaszczowiny magurskiej, rozpoznano większość poziomów biostratygraficznych opracowanych dla polskich Karpat zewnętrznych przez Gerocha & Nowaka (1984) oraz przez Olszewską (1997). Do tego schematu włączono również poziomy charakterystyczne dla utworów płaszczowiny magurskiej. Poziom Plectorecurvoides alternans (poziom interwałowy IZ) Definicja: dolna granica - pojawienie się gatunku Plectorecurvoides alternans Noth (w badanym materiale dolna granica nie jest uchwycona, odpowiada początkowi profilu sukcesji magurskiej), górna granica - pojawienie się Bulbobaculites problematicus (Neagu);

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono działanie i uzyskane wyniki zastosowania funkcji FXCNS, pracującej w systemie Omega, której zadaniem jest tłumienie zakłóceń koherentnych.
The paper presents operation and results of application of the FXCNS procedure, operating in the Omega system. The task of this procedure is a coherent noise suppression. Application of the procedure was shown with an example of the seismic line 56-1-89K, registered by the Geofizyka Kraków Ltd. in the western part of the Flysch Carpathians. Application of the FXCNS procedure at an early stage of processing contributed to better estimation of a wavelet during deconvolution (increasing of vertical resolution), improved mutual coherence of traces, as well as distinctly improved horizontal resolution.

Opis:
The research on the Oligocene succession of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin (CCPB) in the Kacwin region focused on sedimentological and palynofacies analyses. Observations were carried out in natural exposures along three streams flowing in the Polish Spisz: Kacwinianka, Łapszanka and Kacwiński. Three main groups of lithofacies have been distinguished: coarse-grained, mixed and sandy-grained, and fine-grained. The lithofacies are characterized by variable sedimentary structures, e.g. massive structure, horizontal lamination, ripple cross-lamination, hummocky cross-stratification, deformation structure. Sedimentological analyses showed that structures typical for turbidity currents and those characteristic of relatively shallow deposition (HCS, wave ripples) could coexist in the investigated succession interpreted as typical for turbidity currents influenced by storm waves. This indicates relatively shallow-water environments. The palynofacies analysis enabled identification of the following components: black wood, brown wood, cortex, resin, sporomorphs, cuticle, algae, dinoflagellates and AOM. A high proportion of black wood and low diversity of components point to an origin related to turbidity currents. Furthermore, results of the palynofacies analysis have allowed determining that, during the deposition of the CCPB sediments in the Polish Spisz area, the distance between the deposition area and the source area became relatively large. The biostratigraphic analysis of dinoflagellate cysts from the Podhale Basin (Szaflary, Zakopane, and lower Chochołów beds) indicates an Early Rupelian age. Moreover, kerogen analysis in the UV was applied for the first time to study the CCPB succession. As a result, reworking was documented, so far unrecognized by other methods, and the mutual verification of the obtained results was possible.

Opis:
Variegated shales in the Early Eocene hemipelagic deposits of the Subsilesian series, Polish part of the Western Carpathians, have yielded rich siliceous microfossils comprising abundant radiolarians and rare diatoms. Forty-three radiolarian taxa have been recognised. One new radiolarian species, Amphisphaera subsilesianensis n. sp. was described. The assemblage represents the Phormocyrtis striata striata radiolarian Zone of the tropical oceans. The deposits investigated have also yielded abundant agglutinated foraminifera which correlate with the lower Eocene Saccamminoides carpathicus foraminiferal Zone. The radiolarian assemblage comprises a low content of taxa characterising cool, oligotrophic water masses which also occur in the upper Paleocene deposits of the Subsilesian series. Most part of the assemblage is represented by abundant radiolarian species characteristic of tropical domain, which may indicate the incursion of warm water masses into the Subsilesian Basin during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum Period.
Radiolarie zostały znalezione w zielonkawych łupkach ilastych należących do serii łupków pstrych, ponad pierwszą odsłaniającą się w profilu wkładką bentonitu (Fig. 1C). Badany zespół radiolarii obejmuje 43 gatunki należące do czterech rodzin z rzędu Nassellaria (Trissocyclidae, Arthostrobiidae, Pterocorythidae i Eucyrtidiidae) i do pięciu rodzin z rządu Spumellaria (Actinommidae, Phacodiscidae, Sponguridae, Spongodiscidae i Porodiscidae) (Figs 3-6). Wyróżniono także nowy gatunek - Amphisphaera subsilesianensis n. sp. (Fig. 3G-I). Na podstawie obecności wielu charakterystycznych gatunków promienic jak: Calocycloma ampulla (Ehrenberg), Buryella clinata Foreman, Phormocyrtis striata striata Brandt, Lychnocanium bellum (Clark & Campbell), L. auxilla Foreman, L. babylonis (Clark & Campbell), Amphisphaera minor (Clark & Campbell), Amphisphaera coronata (Ehrenberg), badany zespół zaliczono do zony radiolariowej Phormocyrtis striata striata, wyróżnionej przez Riedel & Sanfilippo (1987) dla regionów tropikalnych. Współwystępowanie zespołów otwornic aglutynujących wraz z radiolariami umożliwiło korelację tego poziomu radiolariowego z poziomem otwornicowym Saccamminoides carpathicus (Geroch & Nowak, 1984). Opisany zespół radiolarii wskazuje wyraźnie na ingresję ciepłych wód powierzchniowych do basenu podśląskiego we wczesnym eocenie, w których mogły żyć gatunki tropikalne i subtropikalne. Podobne zespoły taksonów występują w utworach jednostki skolskiej należących do tych samych poziomów biostratygraficznych (Bąk et al., 1997).

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono metodę i wyniki numerycznego modelowania procesów deformacji osuwiska na stoku Maślanej Góry w okolicach Szymbarku k. Gorlic (Beskid Niski). Jest to stare, rozległe osuwisko o skomplikowanej strukturze i o zaawansowanych deformacjach, jednak wciąż aktywne. W masywie skalnym zbocza przeważają słabe i miękkie łupki ilaste.
The paper presents the method and results of numerical modelling of deformations on the landslide slope Maślana Góra in neighbourhood of Szymbark near Gorlice (Beskid Niski Mts.). It is complex, large landslide in advanced stage, but still active. The slope is composed of weak and soft clay shale. Numerical analysis performed using FLAC 2D program, based on finite difference method allowed to estimate the influence of water conditions on the landslide activity. It has been proved that the slide probability of the whole slope in the same time is low, but the zones having smaller extent can move gradually. Attention has been paid on the possibility of the interpretation of deformation processes basing on the displacement curves in vertical profiles.

The landforms of the Chornohora Mountains and related geomorphological processes are strongly controlled by geological structure. Detailed geomorphological mapping of the Chornohora Range yielded evidence of deep-seated gravitational slope failures on the south-western slopes. These slope deformations were structurally predisposed and linked to the dip of bedrock strata and their resistance to erosion, as well as to cracks and faults within the flysch formations. This paper presents structural factors controlling the morphology of relatively poorly recognized, dip-adjusted south-western slopes of the Chornohora Mts. between Mt. Hoverla (2,061 m a.s.l.) and Mt. Pop Ivan (2,022 m a.s.l.).

Late Glacial
Opis:
The area of Poland, including the Carpathian Mountains, is located in a zone where landslides cause large material damage. This issue can be considered using different time scales. Using various dating methods, it was possible to distinguish periods of increased landslide activity. Among others, the radiometric methods are the most common. Based on the 14C dated landslides in Szczawnica-Biafy Stream, Zapadle near Szymbark, Rychwatd near Żywiec and on data published by Margielewski (2006), it was possible to hypothesize that landslides in the Carpathians have been developing over 13,000 years, i.e. since the Oldest Dryas. This is related to the beginning of degradation of the permafrost, which can be considered as the inception of the development of large rock landslides. On the basis of the presented data, it can also be stated that these landslides have been active up to modern times and their development is very long. An example of this is the landslide in Zapadle. The position of the landslide tongue, which is subjected to erosion, is of great importance, which promotes its further activity. Permanent removing of the colluvial material by a stream and its supplementing by subsequent new displacements from the scarp causes that the landslides can be active for a very long period of time.

Opis:
Na podstawie pomiarów przeprowadzonych w latach 2000-2015 stwierdzono występowanie umiarkowanych i dość silnych zależności miedzy średnimi rocznymi stanami wody a sumami opadów i warstwą odpływu.
This paper presents an analysis of temporal dynamics of the abundance of water in the soil-mantle rock cover at piezometric positions in the middle and lower parts of the foothill flysch slope in Szymbark. The research was based on the value of the drought risk index (kn) which was calculated for periods of 10 or 11 days (decades) on the basis of daily measurements of water levels. In each of the two stations, four bore holes were dug to depths of 50, 100, 150 and 250 cm. and the measurements were made with the use of the well whistle. On the basis of these measurements, the occurrence of moderate and relatively strong relationships between average annual water levels and the sums of precipitation and runoff indicator were observed. The greatest number of ten-day results of the kn rate was observed in the "low flow risk" class (−0.1 < kn <= 0.1) or "no low flow risk" class (0.1 < kn <= 0.3). The most common “low flow risk” occurred at a depth of 150 cm. The longest periods of low flow (kn <−0.1), calculated for each of the holes, lasted for nine decades, while the longest periods of excess water (kn > 0.3) in both stations continued for five decades. During the year, especially between the end of February and the beginning of April, an increase of kn index was observed in every piezometric hole. This occurred as a result of rainfall during winter, including the melting of snow cover, under conditions of reduced evapotranspiration and drainage runoff.

Celem publikacji jest prezentacja wyników zastosowania programu Interactive Petrophysics firmy Schlumberger w interpretacji parametrów petrofizycznych skał fliszowych w profilach 16 otworów usytuowanych we wschodniej części Karpat Zewnętrznych, w obszarze wychodni płaszczowiny skolskiej i śląskiej. Wartości parametrów pakietów piaskowcowych w poszczególnych profilach wierceń, w zakresie: miąższości, zailenia, porowatości i nasycenia węglowodorami, zestawiono w tabelach wg przynależności litostratygraficznej, porównując je następnie z wynikami oznaczeń laboratoryjnych zawartych w dokumentacjach wierceń wykonanych przez PGNiG, Ośrodek Południe w Jaśle.
The aim of the paper is to present results of application of the Schlumberger's Interactive Petrophysics software to interpretation of petrophysical parameters of flysch rocks in 16 well sections located in the eastern Outer Carpathians, within the area of outcrops of the Skole and Silesian nappes. Values of the parameters (thickness, clay content, porosity, hydrocarbon saturation) of sandstone packages in particular well sections were compiled in tables according to their lithostratigraphic status and then compared to results of laboratory determinations included in documentation of wells drilled by the Polish Oil and Gas Company, South Branch in Jasło. Characteristics of variability in these parameters are illustrated by printouts of interpretation results for selected sections and by histograms of distribution of the clay content and porosity for the Krosno, Menilite and Inoceramian lithofacies in the Skole series, as well as for the Krosno (and Transition) and Menilite Beds in the Silesian series. Clay content lower than 33.3% and porosity higher than 3.5% were accepted as the criterion of distinction of sandstone horizons.

Opis:
Peculiar calcite speleothems developed in fissures in the Cergowa Sandstones were found in the Klęczany Quarry (Polish Western Carpathians). They represent flowstone and stalactites, rafts and various sparry crusts. Such speleothems, especially phreatic ones, are uncommon in the Outer Carpathians that are composed mainly of siliciclastic rocks of flysch type, with only limited calcium carbonate content. The speleothems analysed grew in vadose and phreatic conditions as well as at the air-water interface. Phreatic speleothems and thin rafts comprise calcite crystals of eccentric morphology. Based on their stable isotope composition the majority of the speleothems form two clusters. The first is characterized by d18O values between –9.8 and –8.5‰ and of d13C values between –5.7 and –0.6‰ whereas the second cluster of samples yields d18O values between –9.4 and –7.3‰ and d13C values from –11.5 to –9.7‰. Speleothems grew between 230+14–13 ka and Holocene time. Phreatic speleothems, including massive rafts, precipitated from ascending water of deep circulation whereas vadose and water table speleothems crystallized from local infiltration water charged with soil CO2. Mixing of both waters in the shallow phreatic zone is plausible.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of analysis of surface roughness parameters in the Krosno Sandstones of Mucharz, southern Poland. It was aimed at determining whether these parameters are influenced by structural features (mainly the laminar distribution of mineral components and directional distribution of non-isometric grains) and fracture processes. The tests applied in the analysis enabled us to determine and describe the primary statistical parameters used in the quantitative description of surface roughness, as well as specify the usefulness of contact profilometry as a method of visualizing spatial differentiation of fracture processes in rocks. These aims were achieved by selecting a model material (Krosno Sandstones from the Górka–Mucharz Quarry) and an appropriate research methodology. The schedule of laboratory analyses included: identification analyses connected with non-destructive ultrasonic tests, aimed at the preliminary determination of rock anisotropy, strength point load tests (cleaved surfaces were obtained due to destruction of rock samples), microscopic analysis (observation of thin sections in order to determine the mechanism of inducing fracture processes) and a test method of measuring surface roughness (two- and three-dimensional diagrams, topographic and contour maps, and statistical parameters of surface roughness). The highest values of roughness indicators were achieved for surfaces formed under the influence of intragranular fracture processes (cracks propagating directly through grains). This is related to the structural features of the Krosno Sandstones (distribution of lamination and bedding).
