For some variants of the finite element method there exist points having a remainder value or a derivation remainder remarkably less than those given by global norms. This phenomenon is called superconvergence and the points are called superconvergence points. The generalized problem corresponding to (1) is as follows: Let Hk(Ω) be Sobolev space and Hk0(Ω) the completion of the space C∞0(Ω) with norm ∥⋅∥k,Ω. Find u∈H10(Ω) such that for each v∈H10(Ω), (2) a(u,v)=(f,v)0 holds, where a(u,v)=∫Ω(∑n|α|=0aα(x)DαuDαv)dx, (f,v)0=∫Ωf(x)v(x)dx, Dα=Dα11⋯Dαnn,1.5pt Dαiiu=∂αiu/∂xαii, i=1,n¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯. The approximate problem of the finite element variant considered is the following: Find uh∈Vh such that (3) for all v∈Vh, a(uh,v)=(f,v)0. The main result is the theorem: Let ai∈C(Ω¯), D1ai,D2ai∈L∞(Ω),i=1,2,∥σ∥∞L(Ω)≤σ,f∈L2(Ω). Suppose the eigenvalues of the operator L are different from zero, and u∈H4(Ω)∩H10(Ω). Then there exists h0 such that for h≤h0, h2∑P∈G|grad(u−uh)(P)|≤Ch3(|u|3+|u|4), where u and uh are the solutions of problems (2) and (3), respectively, and C is some constant independent of h. Further, |u|k={∫Ω(∑|α|=k(Dαu)2)dx}1/2, G=⋃N1N2i=1Fi(R), R={(±3√/3,±3√/3)} is a Gauss point set in the quadrant S={(ξ1,ξ2):|ξk|≤1,k=1,2}, and Fi(F(1)i,F(2)i):S→ei, ei an element; F(1)i(ξ1,ξ2)=x(i)0+h1ξ1/2, F(2)i(ξ1,ξ2)=y(i)0+h2ξ2/2, and (x(i)0,y(i)0) is the middle element.

This paper presents a finite element simulation of a human lower limb in a full extension after a knee joint arthroplasty. Aside a total knee endoprosthesis Medin Modulár (size 76, right knee) provided by Medin Orthopedics, a.s., Czech Republic, two long bones, femur and tibia were used. As for a load, more than 30 most important muscles of the lower limb and 8 knee ligaments were disigned. Compared with our former results, this model gives reduced stress and contact pressures values which were given by more realistic ankle and hip joint definition. Their distributions correspond our former findings.

This paper presents a finite element simulation of an oncology knee-joint endoprosthesis in a various degrees of flexion. The simulation has been made in accordance with an ISO 14243 [1-3]. A model of the knee implant (produces by ProSpon, s.r.o. [4]) consists of following parts: femoral stem, femoral replacement, femoral component, PE bushings, and tibial plateau. Results for four positions of flexion (1.53deg, 8.13deg, 15.31deg and 26.33deg) gave better understanding of strain and stress distribution along the endopros-thesis and pointed out also the most crucial areas requiring the attention. These foundlings are useful for individual design of the knee-joint prosthesis and for further development.

This paper presents a procedure of conducting Stochastic Finite Element Analysis using Polynomial Chaos. It eliminates the need for a large number of Monte Carlo simulations thus reducing computational time and making stochastic analysis of practical problems feasible. This is achieved by polynomial chaos expansion of the displacement field. An example of a plane-strain strip load on a semi-infinite elastic foundation is presented and results of settlement are compared to those obtained from Random Finite Element Analysis. A close matching of the two is observed.

The paper presents a numerical study of an aircraft wheel impacting on a flexible landing surface. The proposed 3D model simulates the behaviour of flexible runway pavement during the landing phase. This model was implemented in a finite element code in order to investigate the impact of repeated cycles of loads on pavement response. In the model, a multi-layer pavement structure was considered. In addition, the asphalt layer (HMA) was assumed to follow a viscoelastoplastic behaviour. The results demonstrate the capability of the model in predicting the permanent deformation distribution in the asphalt layer.

Opis:
The paper presents the author’s non-linear FEM solution of an initially stressless deformed flat frame element, in which the nodes are situated along the axis of the bar initially straight. It has been assumed that each node may sustain arbitrary displacements and rotation. The solution takes into account the effect of shear, the geometrical non-linearity with large displacements (Green-Lagrange’s strain tensor) and moderate rotations (i.e. such ones which allow a linear-elastic behaviour of the material) and alternative small rotations when the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor is applied. This solution is based on [1], concerning beams without any initial bow imperfections. The convergence of the obtained results at different numbers of nodes and Gauss points in the element was tested basing on the example of circular arcs with a central angle of 120º-180º. The analysis concerned elements with two, three, five, seven, nine and eleven nodes, for the same number of points of numerical integration and also with one more or less. Moreover, the effect of distributing the load on the convergence of the results was analyzed.

The presented strength and fatigue calculations refer to an unsupported deck crane and its three distinct parts: housing, jib and column. Static loads applied to the structure were due to the crane’s own weight and a maximum working load, corresponding to a maximum lifting capacity at a maximum outreach of the crane. The numerical analysis was aimed at determining the thickness of the skin plating of the column and the number, shape and distribution of stiffeners in the column, housing and jib, ensuring that the crane yields correct strength and fatigue parameters. During the process of designing marine structures, the standard numerical analysis is, in many cases, limited to calculations in the basic strength range. Even when using numerical methods of analysis, complex strength and fatigue calculations are often not performed. The modern numerical analysis chain for marine structures should concentrate not only on strength analysis, but should take a further step, which encompasses fatigue analysis. The article presents a new outlook on design methods, which should be the entry point to the design of marine structures. Based on the acquired number of cycles of fatigue life, it is possible to estimate, with a sufficient degree of accuracy, the practical service life of a structure. To solve the problem, the authors used the finite element analysis software ABAQUS supported by the fe-safe system.

This paper presents a first attempt to model abrasive waterjet (AWJM) machining process using the powerful tool of the finite element method (FEM) in order to explain the abrasive particle-workpiece interaction. The new model takes into account precise representation of the constitutive behaviour of the workpiece material under AWJ dynamic loading conditions which was ignored in previous AWJM models. In the present model, forces acting on the abrasive particle need not be initially determined, as in previous AWJM studies, as they are automatically calculated at each time step. The results show that the finite element method is a useful tool in predicting abrasive-material interaction and AWJ depth of cut.
Modelowanie obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych. W artykule przedstawiono pierwsze podejście do modelowania obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych.

Some new results for several cases of bottom shapes are presented. Numerical simulations of the pantograph-catenary dynamic interaction allow for assessment of the current collection quality provided by this subsystem at the design stage of the pantograph or the catenary system. In this paper, the authors present numerical results of simulations of the dynamic interaction between a pantograph and a catenary. Adopted catenary and pantograph models are consistent with the reference model presented in the EN 50318:2002 document, which describes the validation procedure of the simulation for the dynamic interaction between pantograph and overhead contact line. Authors have used the Finite Element Method to analyze this complex system. Ten catenary spans of simple catenary (one messenger wire and one contact wire) are modelled, each of them is 60m long. The pre-sag of the catenary is 0mm and the model of the catenary includes the stagger which equals ±200mm. The pantograph model consists of lumped masses which are connected each other with spring-damper elements. First, the static initial configuration is obtained (under gravity and tensioning loads), after which the dynamic transient simulation is conducted. Obtained results for the contact force and uplifts at supports are within the reference ranges presented in the EN 50318:2002 document, therefore it can be considered that the adopted model correctly reproduces the dynamic behaviour of the pantograph-catenary dynamic interaction.

Opis:
In this paper the problem of interaction between a coherent floating ice cover and a rigid engineering structure is considered. It is assumed that the ice cover, of horizontal dimensions considerably larger than the dimensions of the structure, is driven by wind and water current drag forces. During the interaction process of a quasi-static character, ice is assumed to behave as a creeping material, with a rheology described by the viscous fluid flow law. The ice cover is treated as a plate which sustains both bending due to the vertical reaction of the underlying water and the action of horizontal forces, which gives rise to the development of creep buckles in the plate and subsequently leads to the flexural failure of ice. An approximate solution to the problem is constructed by employing the finite element method. The results of numerical simulations illustrate the magnitudes of the forces exerted on the structure and their dependence on the wind direction and the structure geometry. In addition, the ice plate deflection in the vicinity of the structure is illustrated, and the values of the critical time at which the plate starts to fail by creep buckling are determined to show their dependence on the ice thickness, temperature, and type.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the temperature fields of the solid disc brake during short, emergency braking. The standard Galerkin weighted residual algorithm was used to discretize the parabolic heat transfer equation. The finite element simulation for two-dimensional model was performed due to the heat flux ratio constantly distributed in circumferential direction. Two types of disc brake assembly with appropriate boundary and initial conditions were developed. Results of calculations for the temperature expansion in axial and radial directions are presented. The effect of the angular velocity and the contact pressure evolution on temperature rise of disc brake was investigated. It was found that presented finite element technique for two-dimensional model with particular assumption in operation and boundary conditions validates with so far achievements in this field.

Thermo-chemical treatments are known to increase the fatigue life of industrial parts. Due to the imprecise consideration of residual stresses in predicting the durability of components subjected to cyclic loading and their effect on the fatigue life, the authors developed a numerical model combining the influence of residual stresses with stresses caused by bending. The authors performed the numerical simulation with the use of Finite Element Method to analyse material behaviour during cyclic loading. The residual stress state developed during nitriding was introduced onto cross-section of the numerical specimen. The goal of this work was better understanding of the real conditions of the nitride steel fatigue processes and improving the knowledge about numerical predicting of the fatigue life for parts with residual stresses. The results of simulation were compared with plane bending fatigue tests. The presented method indicates the possibility of increasing the accuracy of the fatigue analysis of elements after surface treatment, increasing its certainty and the ability to perform better optimization of service life.

Opis:
The method of calculations of a thick plate on the two-parameter layered foundation by the finite element method is presented. The numerical model allows to add a few (number of) foundation layers. The expressions for the element stiffness matrices of the foundation are based on IS-node zero-thickness interface elements. For modeIling of thick plates the 9-node Mindlin element of the Lagrange family is used. The formulation of the problem takes into account the shear deformation of the plate and unilateral contact conditions between plate and foundation. The tensionless character of the foundation is achieved by removing from the global stiffness matrix the appropriate part of foundation stiffness attached to the node being in the separation stage. The advantages of the proposed algorithm are illustrated by numerical examples.
W celu zamodelowania elementu płyty grubej wykorzystano 9-węzłowy element płytowy z rodziny Lagrange'a zdefiniowany według teorii Mindlina.

The dynamic bone remodeling process is a computationally challenging research area that struggles to understand the actual mechanisms. It has been observed that a mechanical stimulus in the bone greatly affects the remodeling process. A 3D finite element model of a femur is created and a probabilistic analysis is performed on the model. The probabilistic analysis measures the sensitivities of various parameters related to the material properties, geometric properties, and the three load cases defined as Single Leg Stance, Abduction, and Adduction. The sensitivity of each parameter is based on the calculated maximum mechanical stimulus and analyzed at various values of probabilities ranging from 0.001 to 0.999. The analysis showed that the parameters associated with the Single Leg Stance load case had the highest sensitivity with a probability of 0.99 and the angle of the force applied to the joint of the proximal femur had the overall highest sensitivity.

Magnetic properties of silicon iron electrical steel are determined by using standardized measurement setups and distinct excitation parameters. Characteristic values for magnetic loss and magnetization are used to select the most appropriate material for its application. This approach is not sufficient, because of the complex material behavior inside electrical machines, which can result in possible discrepancies between estimated and actual machine behavior. The materials’ anisotropy can be one of the problems why simulation and measurement are not in good accordance. With the help of a rotational single sheet tester, the magnetic material can be tested under application relevant field distribution. Thereby, additional effects of hysteresis and anisotropy can be characterized for detailed modelling and simulation.

The paper deals with application of the finite element method in modelling and simulation of nanostructures. The finite element model is based on beam elements with stiffness properties gained from the quantum mechanics and nonlinear spring elements with forcedisplacement relation are gained from Morse potential. Several basic mechanical properties of structures are computed by homogenization of nanostructure, e.g. Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio. The problems connecting with geometrical parameters of nanostructures are considered and their influences to resulting homogenized quantities are mentioned.

Nowadays, the growing popularity of terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) allows to obtain a point cloud of many industrial objects along with classic surveying. However, the quality and model’s accuracy in comparison to a real shape seem to be a question, that must be further researched. It is crucial especially for Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis, which, being a part of technical design, estimate the values of construction’s dislocation and deformation. The article describes objects such as headgear with steel support and 4-post headframe with steel sheers. Both supports and sheers were modelled basing on point clouds. All the models were compared to the point cloud. The differences in models’ shape were calculated and the maximal values were determined. The results’ usefulness in FEM analysis was described.

The paper presents a two-dimensional FEM model of burr formation in metal cutting. Abaqus/Explicit software was used for the build of the model. The workpiece geometry, the tool and the cutting parameters were modelled. Physical properties and the method of deformation and fracture of the workpiece material is described using Johnson Cook's constitutive law and the ductile damage criterion. The simulation of the edge formation process during orthogonal cutting was carried out for different depths of cut and cutting speeds. The results of these simulations allowed the verification of the FEM model. The components of the resultant cutting force measured during the actual cutting process with the values of these forces determined based on FEM simulation of this process were compared. The geometry of burrs formed during the actual and simulated the edge forming process was assessed. The analysis showed that the FEM model built enabled a correct prediction of the shape of the workpiece edge and the estimation of geometric features of the edge.

In this paper, a numerical undrained analysis of pile jacking into the subsoil using Abaqus software suit has been presented. Two different approaches, including traditional Finite Element Method (FEM) and Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation, were tested. In the first method, the soil was modelled as a two-phase medium and effective stress analysis was performed. In the second one (ALE), a single-phase medium was assumed and total stress analysis was carried out. The fitting between effective stress parameters and total stress parameters has been presented and both solutions have been compared. The results, discussion and verification of numerical analyzes have been introduced. Possible applications and limitations of large deformation modelling techniques have been explained.

This paper presents a numerical study of an aircraft wheel impacting on a flexible pavement. The proposed three dimensional model simulates the behaviour of flexible runway pavement during the landing phase. This model was implemented in a finite element code in order to investigate the impact of repeated cycles of loads on pavement permanent deformation. In the model a traditional multi-layer pavement structure was considered. In addition, the asphalt layer (HMA) was assumed to follow an elasto-viscoplastic behaviour. The results demonstrate the capability of the model in predicting the permanent deformation distribution in the asphalt layer.

New finite element methods are proposed for elliptic interface problems in one and two dimensions. The main motivation is to get not only an accurate solution, but also an accurate first order derivative at the interface (from each side). The key in 1D is to use the idea of Wheeler (1974). For 2D interface problems, the point is to introduce a small tube near the interface and propose the gradient as part of unknowns, which is similar to a mixed finite element method, but only at the interface. Thus the computational cost is just slightly higher than in the standard finite element method. We present a rigorous one dimensional analysis, which shows a second order convergence order for both the solution and the gradient in 1D. For two dimensional problems, we present numerical results and observe second order convergence for the solution, and super-convergence for the gradient at the interface.

Simulation of movement of a large number of charged particles in external electrostatic field is of great importance for a correct design of separators whose aim is to select them according to the sign of their charge. The paper deals with modeling of their trajectories in a specific arrangement consisting of a profile vessel equipped with two electrodes and several collecting bins. Electric field between the electrodes is determined using a fully adaptive higher-order finite element method. The movement (velocities and trajectories) of the particles affected by electric field, gravity and aerodynamic resistance is modeled by an adaptive Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method with an appropriately varying time step. On the other hand, their charges are rather low, so that it is possible to neglect the Coulomb forces acting among them. The methodology is illustrated by a typical example whose results are discussed.

We are interested in the finite element approximation of Coulomb's frictional unilateral contact problem in linear elasticity. Using a mixed finite element method and an appropriate regularization, it becomes possible to prove existence and uniqueness when the friction coefficient is less than C varepsilon2 |log(h)|{-1}, where h and varepsilon denote the discretization and regularization parameters, respectively. This bound converging very slowly towards 0 when h decreases (in comparison with the already known results of the non-regularized case) suggests a minor dependence of the mesh size on the uniqueness conditions, at least for practical engineering computations. Then we study the solutions of a simple finite element example in the non-regularized case. It can be shown that one, multiple or an infinity of solutions may occur and that, for a given loading, the number of solutions may eventually decrease when the friction coefficient increases.

It has been assumed, that the quasi-static stress field, due to distributed forces developed during accidents, could explain the common types of mandibular fractures. Mandibular condyles were supposed jammed in the maxillary fossae. The force of 700 N, simulating an impact on mandible, has been sequentially applied in three distinct areas: centrally, at canine zone and at the mandibular angle. Clinically most frequent fractures of mandible were recognized through the analysis of maximal principal stress/strain fields. It has been shown that mandibular fracture during accidents can be analyzed at satisfactory level using linear quasi-static models for designing protections.

This paper is concerned with the frictionless unilateral contact problem (i.e., a Signorini problem with the elasticity operator). We consider a mixed finite element method in which the unknowns are the displacement field and the contact pressure. The particularity of the method is that it furnishes a normal displacement field and a contact pressure satisfying the sign conditions of the continuous problem. The a priori error analysis of the method is closely linked with the study of a specific positivity preserving operator of averaging type which differs from the one of Chen and Nochetto. We show that this method is convergent and satisfies the same a priori error estimates as the standard approach in which the approximated contact pressure satisfies only a weak sign condition. Finally we perform some computations to illustrate and compare the sign preserving method with the standard approach.

Opis:
Development of self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a very desirable achievement in the reinforced concrete (RC) structures for overcoming issues associated with many problems such as congestions of steel reinforcement. This non-vibrating concrete is not affected by the skill of workers, and the shape and amount of reinforcing bar arrangement of a structure. Due to the high fluidity and resisting power of reinforcing of SCC, it can be pumped longer distances. In this study, the finite element (FE) modeling of three SCC beams in shear while taking into account, the flexural tensile strength of concrete is computed and the results are compared with the available experimental tested reinforced SCC beams. The stirrups are located at 75 mm apart from the end of beams up to the loading point. The electrical strain gauges (ESGs) have been embedded on the stirrups and their strain readings are taken for every step of load increment. For modeling longitudinal steel reinforcing bars and concrete, the 3-D elements with 2-node and 8-node, are used respectively. The comparison of results obtained by two methods is indicated that a good satisfactory agreement is achieved.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with free vibrations of geometrically non-linear elastic Timoshenko beams with immovable supports. The equations of motion are derived by applying the Hamilton principle. The approximate solutions are based on the negligence of longitudinal inertia forces but inclusion of longitudinal deformations. The Ritz method is used to determine non-linear modes and the associated non-linear natural frequencies depending on the vibration amplitude. The beam is discretized into linear elements with independent displacement fields. Consideration of the beams divided into the regular mesh enables one to express the equilibrium conditions for an arbitrary large number of elements in form of one difference equation. Owing to this, it is possible to obtain an analytical solution of the dynamic problem although it has been formulated by the finite element method. Some numerical results are given to show the effects of vibration amplitude, shear deformation, thickness ratio, rotary inertia, mass distribution and boundary conditions on the non-linear natural frequencies of discrete Timoshenko beams.

The paper presents a system of Composite Graph Grammars (CGGs)modelling adaptive two dimensional hp Finite Element Method (hp-FEM) algorithms with rectangular finite elements. A computational mesh is represented by a composite graph. The operations performed over the mesh are defined by the graph grammar rules. The CGG system contains different graph grammars defining different kinds of rules of mesh transformations. These grammars allow one to generate the initial mesh, assign values to element nodes and perform h- and p-adaptations. The CGG system is illustrated with an example from the domain of geophysics.

Opis:
The following work gives the details of the modelling, simulation, and testing of a small portable gravitational water vortex (GWV) based power plant. The gravitation water vortex is an ideal source of renewable energy for rural areas that have a small body of flowing water. For this purpose, we have selected a small size for the vortex chamber that enables it to form a vortex with limited amounts of water. The paper gives the details of the simulation of the GWV in COMSOL FEA software and the parameters that were chosen for optimization. These parameters were the height of the vortex chamber, the number of blades, the length of the blades, and the tilt angle of the blades. These parameters were systematically varied step by step, to observe their effect on the speed of the rotor. The results of the parametric sweep that was performed on all the parameters are also presented. Based on the simulation results an optimal set of parameters was chosen for the physical implementation of the GWV. The paper also goes into the details of the construction of the physical GWV, the experimental setup that was devised for the testing and verification of the simulation results.

When the in-wheel motor is working, it will be affected by gravity, centrifugal force and electromagnetic force. These three kinds of mechanical loads will affect the mechanical stress characteristics of the in-wheel motor, and then affect the reliability of the in-wheel motor structure. In order to understand the influence of the above loads on the mechanical stress of the in-wheel motor, this paper takes a 15-kW built-in permanent magnet in-wheel motor as the research object. Based on the establishment of the electromagnetic field and structure field coupling analysis model of the in-wheel motor, the mechanical stress of the in-wheel motor under different mechanical loads under rated and peak conditions are calculated and analyzed, and the influence of different mechanical loads on the stress and deformation of the in-wheel motor are studied. The research results show that, regardless of the rated operating condition or the peak operating condition, the in-wheel motor has the largest mechanical stress and deformation under the combined action of centrifugal force and electromagnetic force, and the smallest mechanical stress and deformation under the action of gravity only; under the same load (except for the case of gravity only), the stress and deformation of the in-wheel motor under the peak operating condition are larger than those under the rated operating condition; and the maximum stress and deformation of the in-wheel motor appear at the rotor magnetic bridge and the inner edge of the rotor, respectively, so the rotor is an easily damaged part of the in-wheel motor.

Offshore platforms are exposed to waves slamming event. Waves hitting the columns with a high velocity are in many cases the design criteria for column structure. This paper focuses on the analysis of wave slamming on floating platform column. Significant for wave slamming pressure is load history, which is usually based on model test. Wave slamming loads were defined on all four walls of column to assess the worst place. For south wall of column three positions exposed to slamming loads between elevation 21.000 (SWL) and elevation 35.500 were checked. Dynamic analysis has been performed with nonlinear FEM program ABAQUS /explicit. The steel was modeled as an elastic-plastic material with isotropic hardening.

The paper considers the failure study of concrete structures loaded by the pressure wave due to detonation of an explosive material. In the paper two numerical methods are used and their efficiency and accuracy are compared. There are the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The numerical examples take into account the dynamic behaviour of concrete slab or a structure composed of two concrete slabs subjected to the blast impact coming from one side. The influence of reinforcement in the slab (1, 2 or 3 layers) is also presented and compared with a pure concrete one. The influence of mesh density for FEM and the influence of important parameters in SPH like a smoothing length or a particle distance on the quality of the results are discussed in the paper.

Opis:
The central theme of this work was to analyze high aspect ratio structure having structural nonlinearity in low subsonic flow and to model nonlinear stiffness by finite element-modal approach. Total stiffness of high aspect ratio wing can be decomposed to linear and nonlinear stiffnesses. Linear stiffness is modeled by its eigenvalues and eigenvectors, while nonlinear stiffness is calculated by the method of combined Finite Element-Modal approach. The nonlinear modal stiffness is calculated by defining nonlinear static load cases first. The nonlinear stiffness in the present work is modeled in two ways, i.e., based on bending modes only and based on bending and torsion modes both. Doublet lattice method (DLM) is used for dynamic analysis which accounts for the dependency of aerodynamic forces and moments on the frequency content of dynamic motion. Minimum state rational fraction approximation (RFA) of the aerodynamic influence coefficient (AIC) matrix is used to formulate full aeroelastic state-space time domain equation. Time domain dynamics analyses show that structure behavior becomes exponentially growing at speed above the flutter speed when linear stiffness is considered, however, Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO) is observed when linear stiffness along with nonlinear stiffness, modeled by FE-Modal approach is considered. The amplitude of LCO increases with the increase in the speed. This method is based on cantilevered configuration. Nonlinear static tests are generated while wing root chord is fixed in all degrees of freedom and it needs modification if one requires considering full aircraft. It uses dedicated commercial finite element package in conjunction with commercial aeroelastic package making the method very attractive for quick nonlinear aeroelastic analysis. It is the extension of M.Y. Harmin and J.E. Cooper method in which they used the same equations of motion and modeled geometrical nonlinearity in bending modes only. In the current work, geometrical nonlinearities in bending and in torsion modes have been considered.

The paper presents results of the numerical analysis of the fire damper used in ventilation systems under the earthquake loading. The research was conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Nuclear Safety Standards Commission. The aim of the analysis was to examine the fire damper with respect to its resistance to service loadings, structural integrity, and capability to stay operative after an earthquake. The analysis was carried out using the Finite Element Method in LS-Dyna software. The earthquake loading was modelled as accelerations, measured in three directions during the earthquake. For modelling of the materials behaviour, material models taking into account the influence of strain rate on hardening were used. The analysis consisted of three stages, which were: loading the construction with the earth gravity, earthquake simulation by loading with accelerations in three directions, and, finally, closing the fire damper. The analysis has shown that some of the construction elements undergo plastic deformations. However, the performed simulation of fire damper closing showed that despite these deformations, the device remains capable to keep its functionality and the damper closes hermetically. The results of the analysis were important design indications for the fire damper prototype.

his paper deals with an adaptive finite element method originally developed by Prof. Leszek Demkowicz for hierarchical basis functions. In this paper, we investigate the extension of the adaptive algorithm for isogeometric analysis performed with B-spline basis functions. We restrict ourselves to h-adaptivity, since the polynomial order of approximation must be fixed in the isogeometric case. The classical variant of the adaptive FEM algorithm, as delivered by the group of Prof. Demkowicz, is based on a two-grid paradigm, with coarse and fine grids (the latter utilized as a reference solution). The problem is solved independently over a coarse mesh and a fine mesh. The fine-mesh solution is then utilized as a reference to estimate the relative error of the coarse-mesh solution and to decide which elements to refine. Prof. Demkowicz uses hierarchical basis functions, which (though locally providing Cp−1 continuity) ensure only C0 on the interfaces between elements. The CUDA C library described in this paper switches the basis to B-spline functions and proposes a one-dimensional isogeometric version of the h-adaptive FEM algorithm to achieve global Cp−1 continuity of the solution.

In this paper the sheet forming process of cylindrical drawpieces was sim-ulated based on the finite element method by the explicit approach in the pres-ence of contact conditions with isotropic and anisotropic friction. The ex-perimental and numerical results obtained in the Abaqus finite element (FE) based program are presented. The aim of the experimental study is to analyse material behaviour under deformation and in addition to use the results to verify numerical simulation results. It was found that, although, the anisotropy of resistance to friction affects the height of ears, the influence of the friction formulation is relatively small in comparison with material anisotropy. The study indicates that FE analysis with 3-node triangular shell element S3R elements ensures the best approximation of the numerical results to the real process when both material and friction anisotropy are taken into account.

A method of detecting honeycombing damage in a reinforced concrete beam using the finite element model updating technique was proposed. A control beam and two finite element models representing different severity of damage were constructed using available software and the defect parameters were updated. Analyses were performed on the finite element models to approximate the modal parameters. A datum and a control finite element model to match the datum test beams with honeycombs were prepared. Results from the finite element model were corrected by updating the Young’s modulus and the damage parameters. There was a loss of stiffness of 3% for one case, and a loss of 7% for another. The more severe the damage, the higher the loss of stiffness. There was no significant loss of stiffness by doubling the volume of the honeycombs.

Computers are becoming sufficiently powerful to permit to numerically solve problems such as the wave equation with high-order methods. In this article we will consider Lagrange finite elements of order k and show how it is possible to automatically generate the mass and stiffness matrices of any order with the help of symbolic computation software. We compare two high-order time discretizations: an explicit one using a Taylor expansion in time (a Cauchy-Kowalewski procedure) and an implicit Runge-Kutta scheme. We also construct in a systematic way a high-order quadrature which is optimal in terms of the number of points, which enables the use of mass lumping, up to P5 elements. We compare computational time and effort for several codes which are of high order in time and space and study their respective properties.

An industrial application is presented to validate a finite element analysis of 3-dimensional, nonlinear eddy-current problems with periodic excitation. The harmonicbalance method and the fixed-point technique are applied to get the steady state solution using the finite element method. The losses occurring in steel reinforcements underneath a reactor due to induced eddy-currents are computed and compared to measurements.

The paper presents an application of different formulations of the rigid finite element method (RFEM) to dynamic analysis of flexible beams. We discuss numerical effectiveness of the classical RFEM and an alternative approach in which continuity of displacements is preserved by means of constraint equations. The analysis is carried out for a benchmark problem of the spin-up motion in planar and spatial cases. Torsion is omitted for numerical simulations and two cases of the new approach are considered. The results obtained by means of these methods are compared with the results obtained using a nonlinear two-node superelement.

A Hellinger-Reissner variational principle is introduced to derive the weak form equation of thin generally orthotropic laminates. It leads naturally to a mixed finite-element approximation that has the out-of-plane deflection and the bending and twisting moments as independent unknowns. A triangular element is derived that is used for both analysis and optimization purposes. Numerical simulations on example laminates of irregular geometry are presented to validate the theoretical framework.

The present paper deals with the experimental studies carried out on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite skew plates. The natural frequencies were also determined using QUAD8 finite element of MSC/NASTRAN and a comparison was made between the experimental values and the finite element solution. The effects of the skew angle and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies of isotropic skew plates were studied. The effects of the skew angle, aspect ratio, fiber orientation angle and laminate sequence (keeping the number of layers constant) on the natural frequencies of antisymmetric composite laminates were also studied. The experimental values of natural frequencies are in good agreement with the FE solutions. The natural frequencies are found to increase with an increase in the skew angle. The variation of natural frequencies with the aspect ratio is small and negligible both for isotropic and laminated composite skew plates.

Opis:
This paper discusses the problem of design optimization for an I-section profile. The optimization process was performed using the Abaqus program. The numerical analysis of a strictly static problem was based on the finite element method. The scope of the analysis involved both determination of stresses and displacements in the profile and structure topology optimization. The main focus of the numerical analysis was put on reducing profile volume while maintaining the same load and similar stresses prior to and after optimization. The solution of the optimization problem is just an example of the potential of using this method in combination with the finite element method in the Abaqus environment. Nowadays numerical analysis is the most effective cost-reducing alternative to experimental tests and it enables structure examination by means of a computer.

Opis:
One of the main issues of design process of HVAC systems and ventilation ducts in particular is correct modelling of coupling of the flow field and acoustic field of the air flowing in such systems. Such a coupling can be modelled in many ways, one of them is using linearised Euler equations (LEE). In this paper, the method of solving these equations using finite element method and open source tools is decribed. Equations were transformed into functional and solved using Python language and FEniCS software. The non-reflective boundary condition called buffer layer was also implemented into equations, which allowed modelling of unbounded domains. The issue, influence of flow on wave propagation, could be adressed using LEE equations, as they take non-uniform mean flow into account. The developed tool was verified and results of simulations were compared with analytical solutions, both in one- and two-dimensional cases. The obtained numerical results are very consistent with analytical ones. Furthermore, this paper describes the use of the developed tool for analysing a more complex model. Acoustic wave propagation for the backward-facing step in the presence of flow calculated using Navier-Stokes equations was studied.

Opis:
Marine structures are one of the most important industrial and military equipment in each country that should be protected against external forces. The main aim of this paper is a detailed investigation of the underwater explosion (UNDEX) and its effects on marine structures. For this purpose, the UNDEX structure was studied qualitatively and quantitatively using numerical methods. Then, the effects of blast waves on a marine structure reinforced by perpendicular blades were investigated. Finite element and finite volume schemes were used for discretization of the governing equations in the solid and fluid media, respectively. Also, for fluid-structure interaction (FSI), results of fluid and solid media were mapped to each other using the two-way FSI coupling methods. A comparison of numerical results with the empirical formula revealed that the trend of pressure-time curves was reasonable, approving the validity of the numerical method. Moreover, the numerical results indicated that detonation of 1 kg trinitrotoluene (TNT) creates a pressure wave with maximum amplitude of 24 MPa at a distance of 2 m. Also, it was found that the reinforcement blades can be used to improve the resistance of structures against explosive charges, which also results in the reduction of structures deformation.

A laser beam is used to heat a portion of liquid closed in a vessel from the top of it to avoid convection. The temperature is measured at the bottom of the vessel by a laser waveguide sensor. The heating and measuring methods allow using a small amount of liquid of the order of a milliliter fraction. The heat flow through the liquid as well as the surrounding vessel and space is modeled by the finite-element method to calculate the temperature at the bottom vs. time. Thus obtained dependence is used then as a fitting function to get the liquid thermal conductivity among some other fitting parameters.

Opis:
Purpose: To design and manufacture a dynamic cheap prosthetic foot compatible with amputees' requirements by introducing a natural fibre called kenaf (scientific name Hibiscus cannabinus L). Design/methodology/approach: In two cases, four suggested designs were analysed using the finite elements method (FEM) with a commercial ANSYS R1 program. The first case was a heel strike. The second was toe-off by subjecting force equal to 70 kg for both cases to select the optimal design. Findings: The foot found the tensile strength, flexural strength, impact stress, and fatigue test according to ISO 10328 standards successfully. Research limitations/implications: The selected design was analysed again using the ANSYS R1 program for weights 60, 70, and 80 kg for two sequences, one containing kenaf, to study how such additive could affect the mechanical properties and estimate the proper quality weight of the foot. The winner's design was then produced and tested in a fatigue foot tester according to ISO 10328 standards. Practical implications: The results showed that the sequence containing the natural fibres kanaf material improved the deformation by 20% for both cases (from 7.47 to 8.92 mm for the heel strike case for a weight of 80 kg for the sequence without and with kanaf, respectively), and the damping ratio increased by 50% (0. 188 and 0.273 for the sequence without and with kenaf, respectively), which means an increase in the stored energy and higher stability. Also, the mechanical properties like maximum tensile strength, flexural strength, impact stress, and natural frequency were modified. Originality/value: This paper develops an analytical and practical study to design and produce a dynamic cheap prosthetic foot made from natural fibres, which are characterized as renewable, cheap, recyclable, and environmentally friendly materials with good mechanical properties. Authors believe it is the first time to use natural kenaf fibres in the prosthetic foot manufacturing field.

The article presents issues associated with an analysis of the process of delamination of fibrous composite using the Finite Element Method. Research encompassed three computer modelling sessions for delamination of the material for three different values of distance between the test force application point and the middle of the laminate. The results, encompassing the force value and displacement, were then compared to identify the correlation between these variables and the distance from the force application point. The model correctness was also verified by comparing the value of forces modelled with the real values, obtained during an experiment. On the basis of the results obtained with regard to the size of the force applied, it was concluded that the numerical model represented well the mathematical model presented by Comanho. The negative result errors were due to the increased sensitivity of the software to the laminate fracture phenomenon, occurring during the experiment. Thanks to good representation of the model, it can be used interchangeably with numerical calculations.

Finite element methods are used in many disciplines for the development of products, typically in mechanical engineering (for example in automotive industry, biomechanics, etc.). Some modern programs of finite element methods have specific tools (electromagnetic, fluid and structural simulations). The finite elements methods allow detailed presentation of structures by bending or torsion, complete design, testing and optimization before the prototype production. The aims of this paper were model a conveyor belt passage with a driving drum. The model was created in Abaqus CAE program. The created model presented data about forces, pressures, and deformation of the conveyor belt.

In this study, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) blades whose material properties change through the blade thickness are inspected. Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to create blade models and to calculate natural frequencies. The blade formulations are derived for both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams to inspect the effect of different parameters on vibration characteristics. For each beam, stiffness and mass matrices are derived from energy expressions. In the solution part, effects of several parameters, i.e. rotational speed, material properties, power law index parameter, different boundary conditions and slenderness ratio are investigated. The calculated results are compared with those in open literature and a very good agreement between them is confirmed, which reveals the correctness and accuracy of the finite element formulation developed in this study. Formulations are carried out in great detail and additionally, the results are displayed in several figures and tables, which can be a significant source of information for authors working in this area.

The main aim of this study is to develop a finite element model of the hybrid-shunting locomotive. Considered locomotive is based on a popular shunting locomotive in Poland – SM42. All components above the locomotive frame could be modified in comparison to the original object, whereas a chassis was essentially unchanged. Such solution allows the operators freely configure components e.g. diesel engine, generator, cooling module, cab etc., according to their own requirements. Works on the FE model were focused on very accurate reflection of the locomotive frame since the planned dynamic analyses include crash tests. FE model of the frame has a fine mesh and it is considered as a deformable component. Other segments of the vehicle are simplified and treated as rigid bodies mostly. FE model was developed on the basis of the locomotive CAD model. It was decided to transform the CAD model of the frame into the FE one applying the midsurface procedure. Such approach is correct since the locomotive frame is made of a large number of steel elements in the form of sheet metal plates and sections welded together. Altair Hyper Mesh software was used in the FE model developing process. Appropriate connections between respective components of the model e.g. wheelset – bogie, bogie – locomotive frame, were applied. Finally, the locomotive FE model consists of about 116 thousands of finite shell and solid elements and about 125 thousands of nodes. Dynamic analyses of the locomotive FE model will be carried out using LS-DYNA computer code.

A transient thermal analysis is developed to examine temperature expansion in the disc and pad volume under simulated operation conditions of single braking process. This complex problem of frictional heating has been studied using finite element method (FEM). The Galerkin algorithm was used to discretize the parabolic heat transfer equation for the disc and pad. FE model of disc/pad system heating with respect to constant thermo-physical properties of materials and coefficient of friction was performed. The frictional heating phenomena with special reference to contact conditions was investigated. An axisymmetric model was used due to the proportional relation between the intensity of heat flux perpendicular to the contact surfaces and the rate of heat transfer. The time related temperature distributions in axial and radial directions are pre- sented. Evolution of the angular velocity and the contact pressure during braking was assumed to be nonlinear. Presented transient finite element analysis facilitates to determine temperature expansion in special conditions of thermal contact in axisymmetric model.

In this study, the effect of minerals composition, particle size and shape as well as electrodes distance from iron-phosphate ore samples, was investigated by using a commercial software. Comparison between high voltage pulses and conventional crushing showed that minerals of interest in the electrical comminution product are better liberated than in the conventional comminution. In order to elucidate and confirm the experimental results, numerical simulation of electrical field distributions/intensity were performed. The software uses the finite element method, a numerical technique for calculating approximate solutions of partial differential equations with known boundary conditions. Magnetite, apatite and quartz were the basic minerals of iron-phosphate ore components, and the main material property used in the simulations was electrical permittivity. The results showed that the induced electrical field was strongly dependent on the electrical properties of minerals, the feed particle size and the location of the magnetite mineral (due to higher permittivity) in the ore. The angle of particle contact surface with high voltage electrode was an important factor in the intensity of electrical field. Smaller contact angle resulted in higher intensity of the electrical field. Electrical discharge within the material was converted to electrohydraulic discharge within the surrounding water environment by increasing the distance between the high voltage electrode and the material contact surface.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate and analyse the synchronous reluctance machine. An accurate method for determining the lumped parameters of an equivalent circuit of the studied machine has been proposed. The method is based on the phase currents and voltages analysis at low slip operation. Experimental research of a synchronous reluctance machine is supplemented by simulation studies. The field-circuit model of electromagnetic phenomena in the considered motor was developed and used in simulation. The proposed method allows the numerical model to be verified by comparing the calculated and measured torqueangle characteristics of the machine. The test results obtained are presented and discussed. Achieved satisfactory concordance between simulation and experiment results proves that the proposed approach can be useful in the synthesis of reliable synchronous reluctance machines as well as in their control systems.

This work presents a study of crack propagation with a new 2D finite element method with the stretching of the mesh. This method affects at each propagation step new coordinates of each element node of the mesh. The structure is divided to areas and each area has its own coordinate formulas. A program in FORTRAN allows us to create a parametric mesh, which keeps the same number of nodes and elements during different steps of crack propagation. The nodes are stretched using the criterion of maximum circumferential stress (MCS). The fracture parameters such as stress intensity factors in modes I and II and the orientation angles are calculated by solving the problem by the finite element code ABAQUS.

Purpose: To analyze and estimate the strength of duralium rivets which had been treated by using multistage artificial aging compared with duralium that had not been treated. This processwas necessary to be conducted in riveting process effectively. Duralium has been widely used in aerospace industry, one of duralium usage in aerospace industry is aircraft fittings such as rivet. Riveting is one of method that used for joining airframe structural components. During riveting process, the load transfer causing stress that led to the fatigue. Riveting process also causes deformation on the rivet and sheet metal. Deformation that occurs on the rivet will affect the performance of rivet structure. Thus, duralium rivet was analyzed its total deformation, shear stress, and its equivalent stress Von Misses. Design/methodology/approach: that used in this study was finite element analysis. Geometry of rivet that used in this study was drawn by using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2018. While total deformation, shear stress and equivalent stress Von Mises on duralium rivets were found out by using ANSYS Workbench 18.1. Findings: Comparison result was obtained between duralium rivet with and without treatment of multistage artificial aging. The result shown that total deformation, shear stress and equivalent stress Von Mises which obtained by duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging had the lower value than duralium rivet without multistage artificial aging. Duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging could be used as aircraft fitting which had the higher strength. Research limitations/implications: Direct experiment on duralium rivet had not been done yet, this study only did simulation based on data that obtained form previous research that had been conducted by the researcher. Practical implications: Duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging had lower value on total deformation, shear stress, and equivalent stress Von Misses, thus duralium rivet with multistage aritificial aging had a higher strength. Originality/value: Application of duralium as a rivet with treatment of multistage artificial aging.

In this paper, we analyze a class of stabilized finite element formulations used in computation of (i) second order elliptic boundary value problems (diffusion-convection-reaction model) and (ii) the Navier-Stokes problem (incompressible flow model). These stabilization techniques prevent numerical instabilities that might be generated by dominant convection/reaction terms in (i), (ii) or by inappropriate combinations of velocity/pressure interpolation functions in (ii). Stability and convergence results on non-uniform meshes are given in the whole range from diffusion to convection/reaction dominated situations. In particular, we recover results for the streamline upwind and Galerkin/least-squares methods. Numerical results are presented for low order interpolation functions.

The study proposed the model of "guide mark" defects formation on the internal surface of pipes, produced on PRM mills of PRP–140. The research of pipe forming at plug rolling mill with stub mandrel has been carried out; regularities of the dimens ionless parameters characterizing the deformation of the gap release, depending on the reduction ratio, were determined. The model of "guide mark" defect formation on the internal surface of the pipe has been proposed. This allows for lesser wall thickness variation o f rough tubes. It has been shown that, when using dioctahedral pass designs in comparison with hexagonal pass designs the proportion of displaced volume along the pipe axis is greater but the value is lower; thereby, the risk of "guide mark" defect forming is red uced.

This research study aims to investigate the mechanical and metallographical aspects of ultrasonic welding of Cu-Cu wires. Experimental trials have been conducted and observations have been recorded as a database that collates parametric, quality and strength aspects of various weldments. Destructive testing and metallurgical characterizations have been carried out to examine the strength and integrity of the weldment. The key focus of this research attempt is laid on determining and evaluating the factors that governs the strength of the weldment. Metallurgical characterizations reveal vital information on the weld integrity and the extent of grain distribution. Further, FEM is employed to understand the deformation and thermal aspects involved in Cu-Cu welding using ultrasonics. The numerical model may provide an insight into the thermal phenomenon governing the joining process and subsequently estimation of the impact. Response surface methodology is employed to identify the parametric interdependencies and subsequently determine the optimized range.

Opis:
This paper describes application of a hyper-graph grammar system for modeling a three-dimensional adaptive finite element method. The hyper-graph grammar approach allows obtaining a linear computational cost of adaptive mesh transformations and computations performed over refined meshes. The computations are done by a hyper-graph grammar driven algorithm applicable to three-dimensional problems. For the case of typical refinements performed towards a point or an edge, the algorithm yields linear computational cost with respect to the mesh nodes for its sequential execution and logarithmic cost for its parallel execution. Such hyper-graph grammar productions are the mathematical formalism used to describe the computational algorithm implementing the finite element method. Each production indicates the smallest atomic task that can be executed concurrently. The mesh transformations and computations by using the hyper-graph grammar-based approach have been tested in the GALOIS environment. We conclude the paper with some numerical results performed on a shared-memory Linux cluster node, for the case of three-dimensional computational meshes refined towards a point, an edge and a face.

This paper presents the finite element studies on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite cylindrical skew panels. The analysis is performed using CQUAD4 and CQUAD8 elements of MSC/NASTRAN. The effects of the panel angle, skew angle, aspect ratio and length-to-thickness-ratio on fundamental frequency of isotropic cylindrical skew panels are studied. The effects of additional parameters such as the fiber orientation angle, numbers of layers and stacking sequence on the fundamental frequency of antisymmetric composite laminates are also studied. It is found that the CQUAD8 element yields better results than the CQUAD4 element in the validation and convergence studies. The CQUAD8 element is employed for the remaining part of the studies. The fundamental frequencies are found to increase with the panel angle and skew angle. When the number of layers in the laminate is large, the variation of the fundamental frequency with the number of layers is not appreciable. The boundary conditions are found to have a significant influence on the fundamental frequency.

In this paper a problem of heat conduction in the laminate is investigated. The laminate is made of two conductors, non-periodically distributed as micro laminas along one direction. A macrostructure of such laminate is assumed to be functionally graded along this direction. In order to analyse the heat conduction, two modelling methods are applied: the tolerance averaging technique and the finite element method. The first approach is based on the book edited by Cz. Woźniak, Michalak and Jędrysiak [6], the second one is used in the numerical system ABAQUS. The results of applying both methods are compared for two different cases of the distribution of the conductors.

The web-tapered I-columns have the capacity to resist the flexural buckling and lateral torsional buckling at a particular location where as in the rest of the member the capacity is lower. There needs a focusing on the nonprismatic members, to find the buckling capacity and standard procedures are to be framed in Indian Code IS 800:2007. This exploratory research explores simulated finite element models covering a total of 60 web tapered column sections having taper ratios (h2/h1) from 1.0 to 3.0 using FEA software ANSYS17.2. With an elaborate Eigenvalue buckling analysis, this research has come up with newer design equation for calculating the buckling load of web tapered I columns. This novel equation could predict the buckling stress for any taper ratio of web tapered I column of any length.

In this paper, a Hierarchical Trust Region Algorithm for solving PDE-constrained optimization problems is developed. A hierarchy of finite element meshes is used to define a hierarchy of quadratic models for the approximation of the discrete reduced cost functional on the finest mesh. The proposed algorithm simultaneously controls the choice of the model and the size of the trust region radius. Application of the trust region convergence theory allows for proving that every accumulation point of the sequence produced by the algorithm is a stationary point of the discretized problem. Numerical examples illustrate the behavior of the method and show a considerable reduction of computation time compared to the standard Newton trust region scheme.

Opis:
This paper presents a 3D finite element analysis of the effect caused by a blast inside a reinforced concrete tunnel. The simulated explosion was caused by the crash of a heavy vehicle transporting inflammable material (LPG). The finite element technique was used to analyze the structural problems on the tunnel reinforced concrete structure considering the fire action and the subsequent explosion (blast) effect, incorporating appropriate material models. Through FEM software the tunnel behavior was described with regard to structural safety. Indeed, tunnels must be designed to withstand damage factors, so it is desirable that if such an explosion did occur, the tunnel should be able to return to service in safety as soon as possible with minor repairs. Therefore, following the presented analysis, the most important factors influencing the dynamic response and the damage of the structure could be identified. The simulation involved aspects of thermal analysis and structural problems and the tensions in the structure generated by the effect of temperature caused by the fire and by the blast overpressure were analyzed. Following this approach, the most important factors influencing the dynamic response and damage of structure can be identified and appropriate preventive measures can be designated.
