Opis:
Embodied cognition: assumptions, theses and challenges: The paper aims at providing a concise presentation of the concept of embodied cognition that emerged in the cognitive sciences a few decades ago and has gained great popularity among empirically and philosophically informed researchers. The term “embodied cognition” is used by the author in two senses. The narrow sense implies that the body plays an important role in the process of cognition. In the broad sense “embodied cognition” is to characterize the general tendency within cognitive science which finds its articulation in the 4E perspective on cognition. The working hypothesis of the 4E perspective is that cognition depends on the characteristics of the agent’s body and its interaction with the physical and social environment. It emphasizes that cognition is: embodied, embedded, enacted, extended. After reconstructing the key concepts and basic assumptions the author offers a brief appraisal of the views under discussion. He claims that the characteristics of such a trend are incomplete and not homogeneity since the perspective encompasses at least a few related and partly overlapping views on cognition. The author concludes that “embodied cognition” serves as a label for a variety of research programs (or program designs) within cognitive science rather than a strictly defined and well-established research tradition or a new paradigm.

Opis:
This article presents a theoretical review of the difficulty that exists in our days to understand and apprehend metacognition, given the problem that involves the construct itself. In addition, it is a complex concept to measure and to be able to apply it to the educational world and the teaching-learning process. This article discusses the importance of cognition and metacognition, as it establishes a clear difference between the two. A theoretical review of metacognitive research is presented, differentiating the existing research studies on control and the cognitive regulation from the research work that examines metacognition in the educational field. This article also reflects on the state of the metacognitive measurement and the difficulties to capture the metacognitive magnitude and scale as it relates to the capability to transfer these concepts to the educational world. It discusses viable ways to achieve a better development of the autonomy of the apprentices, being reflected in a "learning to learn" action that transcends the school environment and projects to all facets of meaningful learning.

Quantum mechanics introduces a new set of revolutionary principles, such as wave-particle duality, superposition, uncertainty, complementarity, entanglement, as well as a fundamentally new approach to probability. Quantum mechanics was created to explain some paradoxical discoveries that were impossible to understand using classical physics. Nowadays we have a similar problem in cognition and decision making – there are many paradoxical findings that seem irrational according to classical probability theory. For example, under some conditions, people judge the probability of event A and B to be greater that the probability of A, which is called the conjunction fallacy; or they judge the probability of A or B to be less than the probability of A, which is called the disjunction fallacy. The aim of this article is to describe the Quantum Cognition research program, which applies the abstract, mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics to cognition and decision making. Quantum probability theory, initially invented to explain some effects on measurements in physics, appears to be a powerful tool to explain some findings in the cognitive sciences.
Mechanika kwantowa wprowadziła nowy zestaw rewolucyjnych idei, takich jak dualizm korpuskularno-falowy, superpozycja stanów, nieoznaczoność, komplementarność, splątanie i całkowicie nowe podejście do prawdopodobieństwa. Mechanika kwantowa została stworzona w celu wyjaśnienia paradoksalnych odkryć, całkowicie niemożliwych do wyjaśnienia w ramach fizyki klasycznej. Współcześnie podobną sytuację możemy znaleźć w naukach o poznaniu i teoriach decyzji – wiele odkryć wydaje się paradoksalnych z punktu widzenia klasycznej teorii prawdopodobieństwa. Kwantowa teoria prawdopodobieństwa, pierwotnie stworzona w celu opisania pomiaru w mechanice kwantowej, wydaje się skutecznym narzędziem w modelowaniu czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych.

Opis:
One of the well-known polemics of Indian thought, in which many darśanas participated, is concerned with the problem of the validity (prāmāṇya) and invalidity (aprāmāṇya) of cognition (jñāna). The problem has two main aspects: the origination and ascertainment of validity and invalidity. Mādhava’s Sarvadarśanasaṃgraha and other external sources attribute to Sāṃkhya (a tradition of thought recognising the authority of the Vedas) the view that both validity and invalidity are intrinsic, and many researchers hold that this view is Sāṃkhyan. In this article, I reconstruct the Sāṃkhya view on validity and invalidity of cognition on the basis of classical and postclassical Sāṃkhya texts, that is, all extant Sāṃkhya texts from Īśvarakṛṣṇa’s Sāṃkhyakārikā to Aniruddha’s Sāṃkhyasūtravṛtti. I come to the conclusion that the Sāṃkhya view is different from the view attributed to Sāṃkhya. According to Sāṃkhya texts, validity is intrinsic and invalidity is extrinsic in terms of both origination and ascertainment.

When we see in the world the fact that there are many beings, and we indicate that the particular beings exist in a compositional way, we face the task of learning about a new problem: how can we define and determine the relations between beings and between the elements within a being? Although the theory of participation has roots that go back to Plato, and so to a philosophy in which the pluralism of being was rejected and which accepted an identity-based conception of being, participation finds its ontological rational justification only (and ultimately) in the pluralistic and compositional conception of being. With the description of participation as a “descending road” in the cognition of being, we are restricting ourselves to the presentation of how participation is understood in realistic metaphysics (while we shall leave aside the history of the question). We will show the aspects of participation that provide a foundation for wisdom-oriented cognition, and we will show the specific character of participation-oriented cognition as a “descending road.”

The rise of embodied cognition in recent ten years has brought about significant influence on the research of moral psychology. On the one hand, the development of neuro-cognitive science has facilitated the research of morality deeply into the mirror neurons of brain, no longer being limited simply on the philosophical speculation; and on the other hand the experimental research of embodied cognition has provided new evidence for some traditional and philosophical moral issues and even made some new recognition of the issues which are different from the traditional interpretations. Tracing back to the research of the Western moral psychology, we find that cognitive rationality and virtual ethics are the two main research lines for moral psychology.(1)J. Piaget and L. Kohlberg opened a way for the research of cognitive development of morality, and their successors have formed new Kohlbergian School, such as the moral judgment theory based on DIT proposed by J. Rest and his colleagues, G. Lind’s dual-aspect theory based on his MCT and KMDD®; the social cognitive domain theory proposed by E. Turiel and his colleagues; the feminine caring ethics advocated by C. Gilligan and N. Noddings; the Social Intuitionist Theory proposed by J. Haidt based on evolutionary psychology, cultural psychology and neuro-cognitive science and so on. (2) The traditional moral philosophy and ethics have opened another way to the research of character education and virtues, such as the American movement of character education facilitated by W, Bennett and T. Lickona and others; the argument between J. Rawls and R. Nozick on moral problems; A. C. MacIntyre’s moral critique to the Western societies and his virtue ethics and so on. Since 21st century the research of embodied cognition has broken through the limitation of the traditional research on moral psychology, attempting to realize the new synthesis of intellect, human body and its environment, and therefore started the embodied research of moral judgment which is unfolded around the three dimensions of physical cleanliness, disgust, body temperature and body movements. I has also assimilated Piaget and Vygotsky’s ideas of psychological development, the theory of conceptual metaphor in cognitive semantics and the theory of evolutionary psychology, and made its theoretical interpretation and exploration for the embodied effect of moral judgment. Since the variable of physical body could have its influence on individual moral judgment by means of one’s emotion and cognitive elements, the moral judgment based on embodied cognition should be integrated with the theories of moral judgment, especially with moral competencies that are the core of moral judgment, and meanwhile the relationship between the embodied cognition and moral intuition should be deeply explored, and the issues such as chronergy, that is, time efficiency, and dynamics taken place when there is the embodied effect should be further examined, the regulated variables of embodied effects while making moral judgment and the individual differences should also be found out through detailed research. And finally we should check out the embodied effects of moral judgment through the cross-cultural comparison.

The author describes the problem of dramatic cognition against the background of the concept of the dramatic model of literary studies arising from this discipline's own uncertainty about its research procedures, changes occurring within the literary theory discourse and the mechanisms of the theory of cognition concerning the cognition of art and the world. The author discusses application of the category of drama in the modern theory of literature. She also emphasises the fact of unsovability and transgression connected with the theatrical executive instruction of the drama, making it possible to show the play between the reality and the fictionality of the world expressed in the toposes of "theatre-picture", "theatre-figure of the world" and the model of "theatre without the world". The author also adduces the epistemological metaphors of the lamp, the mirror, and the screen.

Opis:
The body is a highly complex, coordinated system engaged in coping with many environmental problems. It can be considered as some sort of opportunity or obstacle, with which internal processing must deal. Internal processing must take into account the possibilities and limitations of the particular body. In other words, even if the body is not involved in the realization of some cognitive explicit task, it is not a neutral factor of our understanding of why a system solves a task in one way or another. Therefore, when conducting research on embodiment and the body’s cognitive system we should not neglect internal, cognitive processing. I appeal to Goldman’s research on embodied cognition to sketch the broader framework for internal processing in embodied cognition. I believe that even if we don’t accept Goldman’s approach as the viable proposal for embodied cognition in general, it’s a quite natural starting point for our analysis. Goldman (2012; 2014, and with de Vignemont 2009) argue for the essential role of the bodily formats or bodily codes (respectively: B-formats and B-codes) in embodied cognition. B-codes are here described as the processing of regions or sub-regions of the central nervous system. They are primarily employed for body control or monitoring, and reused for cognitive tasks. Beyond doubt, this conception provides an excellent starting point for analyzing the internal (mostly neural) processing in cases of embodied cognition. At the end of this paper, I will argue that the embodiment of cognition needs a conceptual twist. Following Keijzer’s (2015) interest in the evolution of the nervous system, and the minimal forms of cognition, I argue that in investigating embodied cognition, we should investigate the role played by cognitive processing for specific kinds of organisms, meaning organisms with a body of a particular morphology (size, shape, kinds, and distribution of sensors and effectors). Doing that, I refer to some conceptual and empirical considerations. I will also try to show that research on embodied cognition is still not sufficiently anchored in evolutionary and comparative studies on cognition, nor on the nervous system and body morphology. Bigger reliance on these kinds of studies, will make it make possible to gain a deeper understanding of internal processing in embodied cognition.

Inquiry-based education as a means of teaching has not been sufficiently studied in the context of empirical cognition in children of lower ages. The currently enhanced space for preschool science education creates possibilities to verify the applicability of physical experiment in the empirical cognition of preschool children and its effect on the development of their creative thinking. The developed Empirical Cognition Development Programme was implemented in kindergarten conditions and empirically verified in a quasi-experimental design on a sample of 102 children (2 experimental groups N = 71; 1 control group N = 31). To capture the level of creative thinking and its changes in children, the Torrance Figural Test of Creative Thinking (Torrance, 1974; Jurčová, 1984) was used. Results of comparative analyses showed a statistically and practically significant increase in the level of the creative thinking factors studied (fluency, flexibility, originality) in one of the experimental groups in comparison with the control group. The article discusses the results and implications for educational practice in the conditions of preschool education.

The analysis seeks to show in detail how the role of mistranslations of some of the Japanese coded instructions which were sent from Tokyo by Foreign Minister Togo to Ambassador Nomura in Washington, D.C., and intercepted and decoded by the US military sigint personnel contributed to the failure of the negotiations, thereby making the December 1941 events at Pearl Harbor virtually unavoidable.

Teachers in various contexts worldwide are sometimes unfairly criticized for not putting teaching methods developed for the well-resourced classrooms of Western countries into practice. Factors such as the teachers’ “misconceptualizations” of “imported” methods, including Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), are often blamed, though the challenges imposed by “contextual demands,” such as large class sizes, are sometimes recognised. Meanwhile, there is sometimes an assumption that in the West there is a happy congruence between policy supportive of CLT or Task-Based Language Teaching, teacher education and supervision, and curriculum design with teachers’ cognitions and their practices. Our case study of three EFL teachers at a UK adult education college is motivated by a wish to question this assumption. Findings from observational and interview data suggest the practices of two teachers were largely consistent with their methodological principles, relating to stronger and weaker forms of CLT respectively, as well as to more general educational principles, such as a concern for learners; the supportive environment seemed to help. The third teacher appeared to put “difficult” contextual factors, for example, tests, ahead of methodological principles without, however, obviously benefiting. Implications highlight the important role of teacher cognition research in challenging cultural assumptions.

In the theory of scientific cognition most neglected side are individual differences in cognitive preferences and mind types. In the context of this theory the consciousness isn’t a kind of neutral operator  in functioning of human mind. This simple and complete typology create the four mind types with characteristic tendency to discovering, defining and solving the definite scientific problems. In the article each type is described in the terms of specific cognitive preferences and aversions. The general line of argumentation is that interaction between problem space (in the objective meaning) and mind type are important for more complete and psychologically valid description of scientific cognition.

It is often claimed that structured collections of individuals with mental or cognitive states—such collections as courts, countries, and corporations—have mental or cognitive states of their own. The existing critical literature casts substantial doubt on this claim. In this paper, I evaluate a defensive move made by some proponents of the view that groups have mental or cognitive states of their own: to concede that group states and individual states aren’t of the same specific natural kinds, while holding that groups instantiate different species of mental or cognitive states—perhaps a different species of cognition itself—from those instantiated by humans. In order to evaluate this defense of group cognition, I present a view of natural kinds—or at least of the sort of evidence that supports inferences to sameness of natural kind—a view I have previously dubbed the ‘tweak-and-extend’ theory, as well as a theory of cognitive systems. Guided by the tweak-and-extend approach, I arrive at a tentative conclusion: that what is common to models of individual cognitive processing and models of group processing does not suffice to establish sameness of cognitive (or mental) kinds, properties, or state-types across individuals and extant groups, not even at a generic level.

The paper presents arguments for treating language as a tool for cognition and communications. It articulates an opposite view to the one which considers language as an independent module shaping cognition and thinking. According to the conception of the socially – based cognition the mind is a controller of the adaptive behavior, and communication is a strategic action to which language is subjected. The model of the linguistic categories arranges words according to the level of their abstraction; and a number of research results presented in the paper indicate that there is a relationship between the level of abstraction of the words used and the inference related to events, emotions and memory. Recognizing language as a tool for cognition and communication leads to the acceptance of the necessity to widen the language awareness. This kind of thinking is supported by the presented results of research on the relationship between linguistic categories and the stereotypes, communication of the interpersonal distance and the process of asking questions and giving answers.

The article is devoted to teacher cognition of students at a younger school age. It refers to indirect cognition, which can be located between scientific and clinical cognition. It is characterized by the stages from initial cognition through symptomatic and causal cognition to the synthetic one. It also presents the factors that hamper teachers’ cognition. The article likewise presents the results of research conducted among a group of early childhood education teachers and their students. The research refers to teacher cognition in several areas: students’ attitude to learning, their participation in lessons, individual perception skills, perception skills in relation to the peer group, as well as students’ attitudes towards tasks, and their social behaviour. The image of teacher cognition that emerges from the conducted analyses indicates high compatibility of assessment results in relation to very good students, and high incompatibility of assessment results in relation to students with learning difficulties and special educational needs. Such a diversity may indicate the absence of temporary and substantial modification of the preliminary data and the lack of progression of teacher cognition – its blockage at the stage of symptomatic cognition, and “labelling” of students.

Artykuł prezentuje ponadto wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród grupy nauczycieli i uczniów edukacji wczesnoszkolnej.

A study reviews digital photography’s fields of application in terms of its individual and social consequences. The Author drew attention to the nature of contemporary selfportraits known as selfies, discussing their psychological functions, reasons for taking them and publishing on-line (uploading). It also presents a more functional use of the achievements of digital photography for “traditional” fields of exploitation, the therapeutic and self- therapeutic uses such as photoanalysis, “reading pictures” or phototherapy. There was also a mention about the ubiquity of modern photography in various fields of science and cognition. Further in the article, a photograph is viewed in the context of its basic media – Internet and the specifics of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The way currently photos are published and modified results in a number of consequences which may be surprising as well as disturbing for those who often carelessly publicize them. At the end the attention was drawn to the privacy risks associated with taking pictures of people, as well as manipulative use of the image.

Learning about language teacher cognition (LTC) is useful for understanding how language teachers act in the classroom. Employing an ecological framework, this study aimed to explore the factors influencing language teachers’ LTCs at different levels. To this end, qualitative data using semi-structured interviews and observation were collected from 62 (30 males and 32 females) Iranian EFL teachers. The results indicated that, at microsystem level, factors such as teaching equipment and facilities, teachers’ mood and feelings, their job satisfaction, and language proficiency influenced LTC. At mesosystem level, LTC was influenced by teachers’ prior learning experience, the collaboration and collegiality among teachers working in the language institute, teachers’ self-efficacy, and critical incidents that happened when teaching or learning. Additionally, the results indicated that exosystem level factors including teacher appraisal criteria, the teaching program and curriculum, and teacher immunity affected LTC. Moreover, LTC was subject to the influence of the government’s attitudes about ELT and religious beliefs about self and interaction, and friendliness with students at macrosystem level. More importantly, it was found that the factors influencing LTC were interrelated and interconnected and in several cases, LTC was a product of joint effect of several factors at various ecosystem levels. Finally, findings in this study suggest that language teaching programs provide recent educational technology in the classroom, foster collaboration and collegiality among teachers, and clarify teacher appraisal criteria for teachers in order to help create positive language teaching beliefs.

The article, drawing on the tradition of Frankfurt School, brings to the focus a great paradox of the Enlightenment – a hidden affinity of rationality and mytho- logy. Noticing the phenomenon of great enthusiasm, underlying the message of the Enlightenment, it tries to pin down the starting point of a new scientistic eschatology – bringing to life a mirage of unending prosperity and unlimited pro- fusion, following the advances of science. The idea of accumulation of knowledge is approached as a pivot of a new mythology. At the same time, putting light on the notion of “cognition industry”, the article offers critical insights tracing an inevitable erosion of high-minded dreams and expectations. Cognition industry is studied as a machinery turning up-side down the hopes of the Enlightenment – protecting the interests of instrumental rationality, and replacing the ideal of getting at the truth with the mechanism putting in motion the “production” of truth, operating in a domain of narrowly calibrated utility.

This paper argues that within contemporary neuroscience and cognitive psychology a new theoretical framework is emerging for the integrated consideration of unconscious (intuitive) processing with conscious ones. This framework requires inclusion of new theories of the brain and consciousness dynamics (Baars, Damasio, Dehaene, Friston, Gazzaniga, LeDoux), evolution of the human memory system (Tulving), and theories of procedural, associative and working memory (Baddley, Reber). Evolutionarily old intuitive processing is not unique, and it is an integral component of any cognitive processes. A revolutionary new synthesis combining intuitive and conscious processing may take the form of a mind vector integrating the two.

The author attempts to demonstrate that the poem "Eliasz" by Bolesław Leśmian has cognitive character. She devotes a lot of attention to the connections between Leśmian poetry and realistic symbolism. Part of the article concerns the poet’s description of the netherworld. Furthermore, it inquires whether the poem accomplishes the ultimate pursuit of poetry – remaining open to one true reality, free of individualism and intellectual constraints. Eventually, the interpretation demonstrates how, through a detached protagonist – "Eliasz", Leśmian begins to doubt the power of poetry to bring one back to primeval cognitive context, to such state of mind where reality is experienced directly through intuition and imagination.

The article is a study of the ways of interpreting the image of the library in Józef Kallenbach’s short story Przygoda bibliotekarza (The Adventure of the Librarian, 1888). The presented examples demonstrate the multi-dimensional meaning of library as an intellectual problem and cognition space. The author shows Kallenbach’s points of view concerning library as a motif which helps to pose questions about convention and conception of realism and, as a consequence, about Kallenbach’s view on culture. The present discussion also sheds light on a few important texts which create a context to analyse the short story by Kallenbach. Intertextual allusions can be helpful in understanding the main problem presented in The Adventure of the Librarian. The paper focuses on the meaning of the library as a graveyard as well as on dream and onirism as a literary convention which expresses the possibilities of cognition and asks what realism in Polish literature of the end the 19th century in Kallenbach’s case actually is.The article discusses the aesthetic differentiation of the library in the short story The Adventure of the Librarian by Józef Kallenbach and the painting Der Bu¨cherwurm (Bookworm) by Carl Spitzweg. The author tries to prove that The Adventure of the Librarian could be an epic ekphrasis to Spitzweg’s painting.

The article contains an analysis of Aristotle's views concerning ethical cognition. The author considers, among others, the following questions: (1) Did Aristotle at all know something like, literally understood, 'cognition by feeling', that is a kind of emotional defining values or normative features; and if so, then (2) Speaking of ethical aisthêsis, did he understand this kind of emotional intuition by it? The result of considerations is that although nature and contents of ethical perception do not appear in the texts of the author of Nikomachean Ethics too clearly, it can be stated that ethical perception is not common sensual perception, but it most reminds of an observation through which certain mathematical relations and truths are defined. Practical wisdom consists more in using this kind of ethical intuition than in cognition and in use of some general truths.

Paul Tillich was one of those important theologians of the 20th century who devoted much attention to issues related to theological theory of knowledge. In Tillich’s thought, God is the mystery of being infinitely close to man, but human cognition of this mystery is always mediated. This article analyzes the question of mediation in human cognition of God in the thought of the great protestant theologian. First, the mediating, symbolic character of all religious language is presented. Then the mediating nature of theology is analyzed. The third part presents the importance of mediation in human cognition of ultimate reality. The conducted research leads to the conclusion that, according to Tillich, there is no other way of thinking and talking about God than mediated in the created world. God ultimately remains a mystery that is revealed to us through the reality that surrounds us.

The text starts with the assumption that a mistake understood in various ways can serve cognition on many levels. Examples from the field of aesthetics and contemporary art are described and interpreted. It is picturesqueness as a beauty “spoiled” by a mistake constituting an aesthetic value, an accidental breakage of Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass revealing an order different to the ordinary course of events and time, distortions in Stan Brakhage's structural film paradoxically revealing love, demonstrating cognitive imperfection of the senses in the interactive video staging of Samuel Beckett's Breath and in illusion constructed in Olafur Eliasson's Weather Project, critical use of ugliness to expose and criticize the system by Leon Golub's "bad drawing style", ironic music video by Laibach, or a subversive film by Martin Arnold, imbalances creating non-ordinary spaces in M. C. Esher's graphics, and errors programming new orders in the digital world of Jared Tarbell, and finally non-places exposed in in the "bad style" photographs of Edward Ruscha or used in installations by Grzegorz Sztabiński. Deliberate distortions, deformations, errors, mistakes, imperfections, accepted randomness or "parasitism" present in these works are presented as inquiries concerning cognitive possibilities and searches leading to the disclosure of spaces and orders different from those experienced daily, in which one can see the striving to achieve metaphysical cognition.

The aim of the paper is a critical reconstruction and comparison of the philosophical positions of John Locke and George Berkeley on the problem of cognition as a reflection (Abbildtheorie) of reality. The article argues that Berkeley rejects the theory of transcendental reflection, but he does not refute any theory of reflection, because he recognizes the theory of immanent reflection. It is the background for the philosophy of Immanuel Kant that he has more connections with the realism of Locke than the idealism of Berkeley.

What I defend is a claim that Tinbergen’s explanatory questions are the most fruitful tool for explaining our “hardwired,” and thus shared with other animals, Euclidean intuitions, which manifest themselves in spatial navigation and shape recognition. I claim, however, that these “hardwired intuitions” cannot capture full-blooded Euclidean geometry, which demands practice with cultural artifacts in various time-scales.

Aim fo this paper was to find and explicate similarities between science and religion with respect to classical criteria of scientific cognition. The discourse was led within the following aspects: knowledge, method, language, institution and limits. The drived conclusion is that religion can be interpreted as satisfying all genral conditions of scientific enterprise. Such a conclusion is interpreted as supporting two possible thesis: (1) religion as a scientific discipline ought to be implemented into scientific enterprise in the way of interdisciplinary cooperation; (2) the presented similarity remains constructed, not discovered – there is no sense in comparing religion to science, since these two notions are too general and vague. Regardless which interpretation one would prefer, it shows, that anti-theistic arguments based on showing religion as opposed to science, do not sound.

Ambrosiaster uses two forms for the definition of the concept of faith. The first one – in the sense of a noun: fides; the second one – from the perspective of the knowing subject: credere. Abraham’s act of faith, whose object is God, is shown as a cognitive model. The acceptance of God’s authority leads to recognizing in Christ the Son of God. Believers receive in Baptism the gift the Holy Spirit and knowing the will of God. By participating in the fullness of His life, they are given access to the Eucharist. Knowability is one of God’s characteristics. Accepting this fact and submitting oneself to God’s guidance results in knowing the Trinity. Christ’s confidence in the Father is the basic principle of knowing through faith, and this translates into absolute certainty of the truthfulness of the conclusions. It is a duty of believers to explore the truth. The Gospel, interpreted by the authority of the Church, remains the main source of revelation. The intensity of cognition influences the entirety of one’s life, manifests itself in the acceptance of all the truths of the faith and in creating harmony between faith and the virtues of love and hope.

The presented article reports on an empirical and comparative study that aimed at investigating the overall level of metacognitive awareness of Iranian and Lithuanian university students, as well as its weakest and strongest sub-components and related metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) items. To obtain a detailed measure of the levels of metacognitive awareness of the two groups, with a total sample size of 755, Schraw and Dennison’s (1994) MAI was used. Data comparisons show that Lithuanian university students have a medium level of metacognitive awareness, while a low level has been detected in Iranian students. Upon examining the subcomponents of the knowledge of cognition component, the mean score obtained for declarative knowledge was found to be highest in both groups. Although in the Iranian group the lowest mean score was related to conditional knowledge, in the Lithuanian group it was procedural knowledge. Considering the regulation of cognition component, the highest mean score was obtained in the planning subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the evaluation subcomponent in the Lithuanian students, while the lowest mean score was obtained in the monitoring subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the debugging subcomponent in the students. The results of this study may contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning.

The article discusses the problem of the relationship between marketing science and institutional economy. Its goal is to examine the impact of institutional economy on the way of scientific cognition in marketing. The article was prepared on the basis of the study of the relevant Polish and foreign research literature, particularly concerning marketing theory. The methodology of the present study is based on the considerations taken up in deduction with the support of descriptive and comparative analysis. The impact of institutional economy on the method of scientific cognition in marketing results in the interest of marketing science not only in an enterprise but also in an effort to describe the external factors (externalities) and social costs related to marketing activities of enterprises. Of importance is also the understanding of the functioning of the structure of the marketing system as well as the reactions of the institutions responsible for the implementation of the country’s marketing policy. The analysis conducted for the purpose of this study leads to a general conclusion that marketing and science devoted to it are not homogeneous in epistemological terms and a significant dualism between the two can be pointed out. It encompasses traditional marketing which stems from management and marketing referring to the institutional economy of higher level.

Opis:
Number is the foundation of quantitative evaluation and an important parameter underpinning mental representations of the external reality formed in both the human and the non-human animal brain. It is generally accepted in cognitive sciences that at least some cognitive functions are mediated through language. Like the language faculty, the number faculty is characterized by the properties of recursion and generativity, which raises questions about the nature of the relationship between numerical cognition and language. Simply put, the main question is whether language is the key to number and whether mathematical reasoning can develop without the lexical and syntactic resources of language. This article overviews the results of various studies investigating the nature of the relationship between language and number. Taken together, the studies on the numerical capacities of speakers of indigenous languages lacking names of discrete quantities, pre-linguistic children, speakers with brain damage to the left perisylvian language area, as well as certain non-human animals demonstrate that language and numerical cognition are functionally independent of each other. This finding suggests that the links between language and thought are not as tight and direct as is often argued in linguistics, cognitive and developmental psychology as well as in the philosophy of language.

This paper contains a few critical remarks concerning some fundamental assumptions and claims propagated by Lakoff and Núñez in their monograph Lakoff, Núñez (2000). Our attitude is skeptical (cf. also Pogonowski,2011). We agree with the idea that conceptual metaphors may play some role in the formation of elementary mathematical notions. However, we disagree with the authors’ claim that such metaphors provide the main mechanism in the emergence of new notions in advanced mathematics.

There is one major reason that the conception of nervous reflection cannot be directly associated with “cognition” even though it undoubtedly should be a vi- tal component of the definition of this term. Namely, reflection, understood as the creation of equivalents of external stimuli, is a process that happens not only in the brains of living creatures, but also in inanimate matter. A thermometer “reflects” changes in temperature, but we would not say that it “knows” them- it is the man who knows the temperature when using a thermometer. Reflection means cognition only when it determines offensive or defensive reactions of an organism: when it constitutes an element of the mechanism of adaptation to the environment, it enables the individual to be guided by the reflected external phenomena. The article elucidates and assesses the Marburg School’s account of the cognition. The characteristic feature of epistemology from this School is the rejection of the mirroring and acceptance of the cognitive transformation. The criticism of the mirroring theory is implicitly contained in Paul Natorp’s and Hermann Cohen’s cognitive relationism. Ernst Cassirer articulated this critical epistemology in his philosophy of the symbolic form and his conception of the symbolic representation. The historical bases of this criticism has been reconstructed as a main purpose of this article.

Opis:
The research paper is an attempt to justify the importance of comeniology in the humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, it includes some interpretation of the social con-texts of education appearing in the writings by Comenius. The justification of the meaning and nature of comeniology is based on the science term senses by T. Pilch and T. Bauman. Their academic coursebook, Zasady badań pedagogicznych (Principles of Pedagogical Research), is a classic methodological title in pedagogical literature. They give didactic, institutional, content, historic-sociological and functional substance to the idea of science. Each of these substances has been analyzed with respect to comeniology. The scientific category of comeniology covers the whole system of contents involving various stages of human developments and his existence. Social and political conditions become the objects of analyses and interpretation, which consequently generate more and more new ideas, statements, interpretations and reinterpretations referring to the works and thoughts of Comenius. Considering the methodology of research of the said works, comeniology is dominated by phenomenology and hermeneutics and their philosophical approach. Scientific discovery, research and methodological solutions along with the emerging system of knowledge about Comenius allow one to award comeniology the character of humanistic reflection. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the subject matters investigated, this reflection concerns the humanities and social sciences. Giving comeniology the status of scientific quality is considering its development in the categories of the process and result of scientific cognition. Reflections on comeniology’s scientific quality and discourse correspond to social issues. Due to the author’s personal interest in social pedagogy, an attempt has been made to indicate social contexts of education. They constitute a largely unexplored area of the works of Comenius and require further analyses. They encompass, inter alia, the issues of school as a social institution, equal access to education, poverty, social inequality and exclusion.

The main purpose of this essay is a systematic presentation of the concept of religious experience and cognition in Jan Andrzej Kłoczowski’s philosophy of religion. The starting point is a definition of religion not only as a system of beliefs but also as an event, as a domain of reli-gious experience and practice. A religious experience in Kłoczowski’s account has no punctual characteristic but it is, in fact, a hermeneutical experience. It is a permanent dialogue with the tradition of a given religion and culture. Someone experienced is the person with a rich experience. Religious experience has both a subjective and an objective side. The subjective aspect is an innate question concerning the meaning and value of human existence. The objec-tive side includes the experience of a symbol, which refers to the transcendent reality, in which it has already been participating. The precondition of religious knowledge is previous participation in the religious order of the world and the religious values of society. The basic rule of religious epistemology is a claim that participation is ahead of cognition. In religious practice it has been carried out by initiation. In Aquinas’ thought the cognition of God is an act of grace given by the Holy Spirit as a gift of wisdom and a result of previously demon-strated act of faith, bond and love.

The result of current insights into basal cognition of single cells and evolution of multicellular cognitive systems within the framework of extended evolutionary synthesis (EES) helps us better to understand mechanisms of cognition and intelligence as they appear in nature. New understanding of information and processes of physical (morphological) computation contribute to novel possibilities that can be used to inspire the development of abiotic cognitive systems (cognitive robotics), cognitive computing and artificial intelligence.

This short review paper focuses on Georg Lind's approach to the moral competence as described in his recent book (2016) How To Teach Morality? Promoting Deliberation and Discussion, Reducing Violence and Deceit. Berlin: Logos Verlag. Lind's dual-aspect approach is discussed as one of the leading conceptions of personal moral competence and moral cognition today. Intuitionist approach and "embodied cognition" are not enough, the author (E. Nowak) claims. As participants of social contexts and institutions, we need manifest, discoursively articulated reflection, self-reflection, and conversation. However, Lind's hypothesis of two leyers of morality, i.e., a conscious and unconscious finds evidence in cognitive sciences too. Lind's approach is not as reductionist as that of radical cognitivists. On the contrary, it combines all relevant aspects of moral cognition discussed right now, worldwide – when cognitive sciences flourish and the challenges for moral mind grow up dramatically.

This article formulates a thesis that the meaning of ‘subjectivity’ and ‘objectivity’ is not obvious and it is difficult to preserve in empirical research their ‘ontological’ understanding. The justification behind drawing attention to this – seemingly – obvious issue is still occurring (especially among people superficially familiar with quality methodology) conviction, that quantity research aspire to objective cognition, unlike, quality research – aspires to the presentation of an individual, subjective perspective of human experiences. I argue by recalling an example of alike sounding statements by graduates of pedagogy, which were subject to a researcher interpretation and they turned out to have significantly different meanings (similar words, different structural sense). I also introduce here (in short) the method of objective hermeneutics, signalling the basic assumptions and technical solutions applied while interpreting data. Although, I refer to empirical material, I do not present research results (I do not discuss the chosen issue) however, I pay attention to the difficulties with the reconstruction of subjective meanings and senses.

Descartes considered himself as an originator of the method of methodical doubting, but, at the same time, he viewed his ideas as most ancient of all. In fact, he fairly closely followed in the footsteps of Socrates and his maieutic method of extracting the truth from an interlocutor in two phases: the elenctic method to demolish the interlocutor’s convictions and then coaxing the truth from him. Descartes’ methodical doubt is but a version of the elenctic method. Descartes also shares with Socrates the conviction of the existence of truth independent of the cognitive subject, which assured the possibility of successful conclusion of methodical doubting as well as the maieutic method.

By engagement in these activities children provide the evidence of implicit understanding of separateness of one’s own perspective and that of the others. Due to their reference to the psychological common ground emerging between them, participants of a coordinated joint engagement are able to adequately understand their activities. Development of the ability for explicit (articulated) perspective-taking is possible only as an outcome of participations in joint attention and joint engagement.

Cratos was a violent oppressor of Prometheus, involved in provoking a crisis among both gods and humanity. This faithful and ruthless performer of the will of Zeus is viewed here as representing one of the deeper cognitive layers of mythological transfer, that is, as a representation of deferred, but always and anywhere prevalent intra-specific violence, the fundamental source and testimony of crisis in human societies.

The production of automotive rear-axle drives is a complex process. This is due to many involved process steps, factors and interdependencies between processes, materials, means of production and individuals acting in this environment. In general their effect on product variations is not fully comprehended. Hence, a holistic analytical model is only possible in parts of the production. In this paper a modular approach is presented to make the production more flexible and enable it to react faster on product variations. This is achieved by a Cognitive Production System (CPS), which is based on accumulating, storing and processing of process knowledge so that it can be applied to similar cases. Through the combination and interaction of Cognitive Tolerance Matching (CTM) and Agent-based Systems the performance of the CPS is enhanced. The work discusses the set-up of such a CPS for the production of automotive rear-axle-drives with the focus on the failure state agent.

On the other hand, they carry a wide variety of significant information about the environment and are present in the life of human being in almost all fields. The origins of numbers as well as its nature were considered in numerous ways by mathematicians, philosophers, psychologists etc. The classical theories of number are briefly discussed and opposed to the psychological and neuroscientific findings regarding number representations. It seems that the ability use information carried by number is not exclusive to educated human mind, contrary its origins are innate and common to humans and several other species.

The issue of intentionality was posed anew in philosophy by Franz Brentano. However, it was Brentano himself who indicated that the source of intentionality-related problems dates back to Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The search for the original traces of this issue in the history of philosophy has led me to conclude that intentionality as an inalienable characteristic of consciousness is characterized by three-dimensionality, which is expressed in theoria, praxis and poiesis. Contemporary research focuses primarily on cognitive intentionality, examining in particular either the very subject-object relation or the immanent (intentional) object, in-existing in psychical experience (in the acts of consciousness). And yet, intentionality is a basic feature of the whole consciousness-anchored (mental) life of a human being. It determines the whole consciousness-based activity of the subject in abstract theorizing, practice and production. Therefore, it manifests itself as a mode of being of a conscious (mental) entity, i.e. an entity partially constituted by intentional content, relationality, reference, directionality, openness and conscious awareness , as well as determining the meaning and the creation of purely intentional beings. Intentionality is revealed as a primary factor in the awakening of consciousness, through the building (constituting) of conscious experiences that are poietic, practical and theoretical. Each of these three ways of categorizing the nature of experience, however, indicates only the predominant aspect of a given experience, for strictly speaking experiences are determined by all three aspects. Intentionality and – consequently – all conscious experience, are thus characterized by three-dimensions: cognitive, activistic and productive. Any act of consciousness is always a form of activity that is informed by its cognitive aspect and produces something transcendent with regard to itself. The recognition of the three-dimensional nature of intentionality allows us to understand the human being and the dilemmas concerning his actions, knowledge and creativity.

The article discusses various forms of embodiment in lived religion and different ways of studying them. It focuses on three approaches to embodiment: the study of religious subjectivity that involves experiencing one’s own body, the study of shared cultural representations of the body, and the study of determinants that change body states and thus influence religious thought and behavior. It is argued that embodiment in lived religion does not just mean that the body is at the center of religious life. Embodiment manifest itself in all dimensions of religious life from ritual behavior to ineffable religious experience. It is most clearly seen in everyday religious activity that forms the core of lived religion.

The paper discusses the problem of knowledge in terms of determinants of human cognition. The main objective is to determine the designatum of the concept of social knowledge and the methods of its categorization. The author presents the key issues concerning knowledge and cognition, both individual and collective. He discusses the dilemmas arising from the nature of human knowledge and ultimately impinging on the nature and shape of social knowledge. He concludes that social knowledge is relative to human knowledge, and that every kind of knowledge, including scientific, develops in close connection with its social environment.

This review discusses the content of Mateusz Hohol’s new book Foundations of Geometric Cognition. Mathematical cognition has until now focused mainly on human numerical abilities. Hohol’s work tackles geometric cognition, an issue that has not been described in previous investigations into mathematical cognition. The main strength of the book lies in its critical analysis of a huge amount of results from empirical experiments. The author formulates his theoretical proposals very carefully, avoiding radical and one-sided solutions. He claims that human geometric cognition is based mainly on two core systems, both being phylogenetically hardwired, namely the system of layout geometry and the system of object geometry. The interaction of these systems becomes amplified in the individual development of the mind, which, in turn, is supported by the use of language. The second part of the review contains the reviewer’s remarks concerning the history of geometry, experiments related to spatial representations, and the role of geometry in mathematical education.

Cognition and meta-learning competencies are important elements in teacher education programs. The research presented was aimed at discovering the link between the need for cognition and meta-learning competence. The research sample comprised 250 students of teacher education in their first-year of study for the degree of licencjat (Bachelor’s equivalent) and magister (Master’s equivalent). Research findings demonstrate the existence of 1) a correlation between the students’ need for cognition and their meta-learning competence, 2) differences between students at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level of education with regard to their expressed need for cognition and meta-learning competence (including subcomponents of the latter) which suggests that these needs and competencies develop over the course of their university education.

The aim of this paper is to present an approach in metaphysics/ontology, which is founded on two distinctions: abstract–concrete and universal–particular. To different cognitive issues one can assign different “categorical coordinates”, namely: a place in the spectrum of abstractness and one of the three following characteristics: particularity, proper universality, total universality. The thesis of this paper is that metaphysics should be located in the region of universality and high degrees of abstractness. Such a localization is connected with specific cognitive difficulties which are present in this branch of philosophy. I demonstrate some problems from the history of philosophy which could be interpreted as caused by these difficulties. Applicability of my thesis to such concrete cases is treated as its indirect justification.

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the initiatory (mystagogic) function of religion, which is associated with its essential spiritual (salvific) function. The text comprises three parts. The first one addresses the problems concerning the very definition of the phenomenon of religion, the attempts to formulate its definitions, either substantive (reflecting the essence of religion) or functional (emphasizing the functions of religion), and the issue of their empirical verification. In the second part, the various functions of religion are outlined in light of the distinction between essential and auxiliary functions (specifically and non-specifically religious). One of these is the initiatory (mystagogic) function, the verification of which takes place in the affective cognition of God. The third part characterizes the affective cognition of God, which originates in the affective states and leads to a deeper knowledge of the Absolute.

Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse The article entitled Chiaroscuros of persuasion. Fragments of the ero//theo//r(e)tical discourse is a reflection concerning the rhetoric paradox, which, as an ingredient of septem artes liberales – was an efficient cognitive, understanding and thinking tool. Today, however, its position is described in the following article with the usage of “light” and “shade” metaphors. The rhetoric of various theoretical models (in the sciences and in the humanities) has become, in our times, a reason for asking the fundamental question about the status of the relation between language and reality, between cognition and interpretation. Does the desire for knowledge, the passion of thinking, indicate the existence of an objective and cognizable reality, or is it quite the contrary: does it prove that there is no non-linguistic reality?

The article outlines difficulties related to the paradigm of cognition in security sciences, which have been generalised by asking about the paradigm that allows to study security of various entities and to obtain progress of knowledge about this fragment of reality. Then, a set of paradigms typical for the social sciences, disciplines: political and administrative sciences, international relations theory sub-discipline: security studies and management and quality sciences were analysed and evaluated using a system of hypothetical and assertion-deductive methods. The subject, time and spatial context of security of entities, the subject scope of security sciences and the ontological approach to the understanding of beings in the reality of security of entities were outlined. The usefulness of analysed and evaluated paradigms in cognition of security was assessed in this context. Finally, a complementary paradigm of cognition in security sciences was proposed and its usefulness in relation to multi-paradigmatic cognition was demonstrated.

The paper is an attempt to explain how the subjectivity of perceptions of the social world is generated, and clarifies some issues related to the reconciliation of its multiple reflections. The author describes the rules and mechanisms inherent in the process through which subjectivity is transformed into social objectivity. This is effected by exploring the paradigm of the multitude and its two traditions - differentiating and consolidating ones. The paper concludes with a description of the basic findings resulting from the analysis of this paradigm as well as a discussion of its advantages, limitations and its relation to the positivist paradigm.

The issue of common-sense cognition is an important source of knowledge from the point of view of environmental protection issues. Such cognition allows for a proper, distortion-free assessment of the current state of the social and natural environment, and consequently orientates man to take preventive and protective measures in those areas that require such undertakings. The article presents holistic issues related to the urgent need to cover the social and natural space with protective measures, which are reflected in the practice of the educational mission of the Catholic Church together with their associations and charitable organizations. The aforementioned mission is related to the humanistic reflection on the environmental crisis and constitutes a practical and educational platform. Both activities of Christian communities use data taken from common-sense cognition, which is a valuable tool in obtaining and determining reliable information.

Opis:
In Urszula Kozioł’s literary output there is a tendency to grasp the world as a whole in a poetic manner. She seeks its more complete cognition. This is carried out by way of constructions which join within the confines of one text elements which in reality belong to various chronological, spatial and ontologic orders while creating a suggestion of homogenity of the human and natural world, biological and civilizational processes. Such a tendency manifests itself in seeking a common principle of being for everything that exists, and in construing a conception of man whose essence is defined by the archetype present in his consciousness. Poetic representation plays an essential role in construing these poetic constructions yet also the manner in which one handles the tone of a text contributes to their suggestiveness. The cognitive tendencies of U. Kozioł’s poetry which bear an intellectual character are closely linked with an emotional aura of her poems. In this aura there dominates a sense of strong emotional ties between man and the earth taken as a whole. The tendency of U. Kozioł’s poetry to penetrate the world in a cognitive manner has not been fulfilled in her works. The earth defends itself against encroaching upon its mystery. Man experiences an inability to a complete cognition.

Arguably, it is possible to reconcile certain seemingly divergent important interpretations by reflecting on an important, yet somewhat recessive, theme that Thomas adverted to sparingly throughout his career in utilizing analyses of predecessors to forge his own synthesis to explain cognition in terms of being that is centered on the reciprocal priorities of judging and concomitant incomplex abstracting.

Opis:
Fiodor Dostoyevsky in his oeuvre indicates certain attitudes, which are often recognized in the process of man's thinking and behavior. They are conditioned by the manner he perceives reality and they in themselves appoint simultaneously this way of world perception. Some of those occurrences resemble in a great manner the defense mechanisms, which are described in the later literature. A first mechanism that was analyzed is pursue simplification, which causes a man to believe that thanks to the achieved knowledge he will be able to set in order and fix imperfect reality. Such attitude enforces simplified vision of the world, which in turn helps in self-deception. Dostoyevsky's heroes have problems to recognize true motives of their own behaviors or they intentionally attribute nobler incentives to themselves. Therefore the next described attitude is reluctance to acknowledge the truth. The Russian writer rejects generally accepted disjunctivity of the 'truth and false' category and he attributes the final might to acknowledge something as true or false to the man's will. On account of innate laziness and refractoriness, man chooses the simplest solutions, which in point of fact dismiss possibility to see real reasons for all failures. It makes impossible to undertake activities, which could indeed change something. Man is characterized by irresponsibility for his actions and words. A word looses its causative meaning and becomes purely a decoration, an ornament. All these make that learning the truth, as one of the elements propelling development of the philosophy, was not impossible but it was unwanted.

Opis:
In the 13th century metaphysics gained quite innovative shape. It resulted in boost of interest in angelology, which has become scientific science. The famous debate between Thomas Aquinas and Avicebron finished with Aquinas’s theory of angelic ontological structure. He has proved that angels are not composed of matter and form, but their composition should be rather regarded in the categories of essence and existence, whereas act of existence plays primary role. The new account of angelic nature let Thomas to show perfection of higher separated substances’ cognition. It is, of course, the consequence of their ontological structure – Angelic cognition is abstracted from the matter, because angels are immaterial, so there is no possibility of processes of abstraction, which belongs only to the bodily beings. Aquinas’ conclusion is simple: angels do not achieve the truth, so there is no process of deduction in their cases, because they are immaterial, which brings about intellectuality of their cognition.

Opis:
Ambrosiaster belongs to the Roman school of exegesis. He deserves the attention because of the relations between him and Marius Victorinus, his predecessor, as well as Pelagius and Augustine, his successors. The purpose of the article was to present Ambrosiaster’s anthropology on the basis of his writings. The conclusions have been presented in three parts: the elements of human nature, the rationality of knowledge and the scope of free will. The first part shows the process in which the elements of nature are integrated. The spirit plays the decisive role synchronizing both the body and the soul. This dynamic and ongoing process is inspired by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The second part reveals two conditions for gaining knowledge: accepting the limitations of the mind and expanding and developing the principle of analogy. The last part presents two ways the free will is practised: by increasing how much one owns, which may be associated with lust, or by strengthening one’s inner strength. The role of the cultural and the ecclesial environment constitutes important information for the reconstruction of the views of Ambrosiaster. This raises the question whether – alongside Antioch and Alexandria – one could also talk about the Roman school of exegesis (Marius Victorinus, Ambrosiaster, Pelagius).

The aim of the paper is to elaborate on conceptual metaphors as a fundamental scheme of human cognition and conceptualization of abstract thinking. The article describes the way they are created and how they exist in the everyday language. Attention has been predominantly directed to phraseological units that often are used to capture the metaphors and express the underlying concepts in the language. The analysis included phrasological units referring to the sphere of human mind.

Opis:
In Modern Age, reflection was identified with the object of philosophical cognition. Epistemology took a significant part of metaphysical research and as a result, rationalism separated itself from realism, and realism from real existing beings. Different theories of cognition and of the object of cognition assumed internally consistent but quite distinct philosophical systems. In philosophy, the notion of reflection took peculiar meaning and even today it plays a significant role in the understanding of the object of cognition and experiencing a subject. Saint Thomas uses the nouns refelxio and reditio. The meaning of the Latin word reditio – “return move” underlines the natural dynamism of human cognition. A move fully realizes itself in the return move to its source, thus making a full circle: it starts with the contact of the cognizing object with the subject and finishes with experiencing object. The reflection is a movement, thanks to which one understands that he is able to cognize, and understands that he fully cognizes once he has cognized. The division into reflexio in actu exercito and reflexio in actu signato allows us to see the main functions of the reflection. Reflection binds consciousness with identity “I” that is human identity, and it gives it coherent, subjective sense, which structures itself by the cognition of external existing objects.
Pojęcie refleksji nabrało swoistego znaczenia w filozofii i po dziś dzień odgrywa istotną rolę w rozumieniu przedmiotu poznania i poznającego podmiotu. Funkcje refleksji pozwala scharakteryzować podział na refleksję towarzyszącą reflexio in actu exercito oraz refleksję sygnitywną reflexio in actu signato. Wiąże ona więc świadomość w tożsamość „Ja”, czyli tożsamość ludzką, nadając jej koherentny, podmiotowy sens strukturalizujący się poprzez poznawanie zewnętrznie istniejących przedmiotów.

This paper considers the foundations of legal interpretation against the background of the theory of embodied cognition and mental simulation. It is argued that interpretation has a double, concrete-abstract nature. The understanding of concrete language is made possible by the mechanism of mental simulation. In turn, the interpretation of abstract language (and hence of most of legal language) requires to apply the procedures of exemplification, paraphrase and embedding. The relationship between these two modes of language comprehension is analyzed and the thesis is defended that they represent two extremes of a continuous spectrum rather than isolated mechanisms. Finally, the significance of such a conception of interpretation for legal methodology is considered. It is argued that the conception provides a unifying, foundational framework for any theory of legal interpretation, as well as generates fresh insights into the nature of understanding legal statutes. cancelcancel

This paper presents pretending as an enacted and fundamentally social activity. First, it demonstrates why we should think of pretense as inherently social. Then, it shows how that fact affects our theory in terms of what is needed in order to pretend. Standardly, pretense is seen as requiring a mechanism that allows one to bypass the ‘obvious’ response to the environment in order to opt for a symbolic response; that mechanism is imaginative and representational. This paper shows that the Enactive Account of Pretense reconsiders the idea that one needs to respond to an absent environment when pretending, proposing instead that socially constituted perceptual affordances for play allow for non-obvious ways of responding to the present environment. The enactive account of pretense suggests that one need not posit special cognitive pretense mechanisms and mental scripts in order to account for pretending, as available capacities for active perception and re-enactment of routines suffice. This paper concludes with suggestions for the kinds of cognitive skills that should be sought out to explain pretense

Copyright (2001) was interpreted as a story about childhood and adolescence, presenting both experiences of a maturing protagonist as well as the Polish reality of the last two decades of the 20th century. Coming to terms with his own childhood and a search for the language to express his own „self” determines the narration of the book. However, this rhythm of narration is disturbed by objects of disgust that the stories teem with. As a result, the author would like to suggest interpreting the collection of stories by Witkowski from an affective perspective. By analysing the diffrent texts, the author explains what role disgust and its objects play in the collection. It is argued that despite its negative properties disgust may be a necessary condition of self-fulfilment and a source of affective cognition. This happens among others thanks to becoming aware of childhood feelings the main character experienced when confronted with the disgusting people and objects.

Emotional discourse and its role in the development of the knowledge of emotionsThe term “emotional discourse” refers to the child’s participation in conversations about emotions. A great body of research (Dunn et al., 1991; Dunn, Brophy, 2005; Harris, 2005; Peterson, Slaughter, 2006) indicate that there is a significant correlation between the child’s participation in emotional discourse (with his/her mother, siblings or friends) and his/her emotional knowledge. The aim of the article is to analyze the role of emotional discourse in the development of the knowledge of emotions. Theories of discourse (van Dijk, 1985; 1990; Shugar, 1995) and of cognitive development (Karmiloff-Smith, 1992; Stemplewska-Żakowicz, 2001; Tomasello, 2002) indicate that in discourse the child has an opportunity to gain knowledge about invisible phenomena and is confronted with distinct perspectives. The child has also an opportunity to name and organize his/her emotions and to make distinctions between them due to verbal terms provided by his/her partner in discourse. Therefore the child’s participation in emotional discourse facilitaties his/her becom ing aware of his/her emotional states together with their causes and consequences, and – due to confrontation with distinct perspectives – the development of the discursive representation of emotions.

To this end, we will begin by characterizing the approach of researchers in embodied cognition to the study of language. In the following section, we will look at research data showing differences in the meaning-making processes for abstract and concrete concepts by natural cognitive systems. This section will be followed by a presentation of selected strategies of addressing the problem of abstractness in the research paradigm under discussion. We will conclude with some observations about a grounded and embodied model of language as a whole.

The main aim, realised in the article is to prove the main hypothesis claiming that transcendental phenomenology is closely connected with Husserl’s conception of philosophy, the idea of philosophy as a science (eidetic and transcendental). The project of transcendental science and knowledge is also connected with Husserl’s conception of transcendental reduction taken as a mode of revealing those constitutive achievements of consciousness which were covered in the natural attitude. In the paper, I focus on presenting the most important points (epistemological, methodological, and transcendental) connected with Husserl’s evolution of phenomenology in the perspective of the project of science.

The article is devoted to problems regarding the linguistic and cultural analysis of folklore. It has been proved that linguistic signs, related to the routine knowledge of order, the forms of its disruption and ways of restoring it, decipher ethnically determined parameters of certain categories, including legal subjectivity, legal consciousness and legal capacity that have been coded in folk poetic texts. The research focuses on the problems of linguistic culturological description of legal information in Ukrainian folk epic texts. The systematisation of theoretical notions that ground the necessity of cognitive and interpretative comprehension of a folk text, as an initial legal knowledge transmitter, has been carried out for the fi rst time. The choice of the linguistic culturological method for the analysis of the legal segment of oral folk creativity can be explained by the fact that culture, during its formation, is actualised in the form of folk discourses, represented by folktales, epic lyrical songs, ballads and other texts that refl ect the intellect of the many generations who created and used them. Folk texts transmit elements of social knowledge, verbalise the codes of a nation’s world view and become exclusive material for the philological study of various forms of ethnic and cultural experience. The perspectives of the investigation are based on the possibility to penetrate the legal sphere of sacral knowledge, coded in different Ukrainian folk genres, by means of a broad spectrum of language means.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób św. Bonawentura z Bagnoregio próbował wyjaśnić intuicję mistyczną św. Franciszka z Asyżu. Bonawentura, jako profesor Uniwersytetu Paryskiego, zastosował do wyjaśnienia mistycznej intuicji św. Franciszka następujące teorie: teorię egzemplaryzmu, teorię zmysłów duchowych oraz swoją własną teorię tzw. kontuicji. Po zaprezentowaniu bonawenturiańskiej koncepcji kontuicji podane zostały wybrane współczesne interpretacje tejże teorii kontuicji, by następnie podać: ocenę kontuicji w świetle współczesnej filozofii poznania w nauczaniu wybranych autorów. Bonawenturiańska kontuicja jest dzisiaj niedocenianym zagadnieniem poznawczym w zakresie teorii poznania Boga.
This article aims to present how Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio approached the mystical intuition of Saint Francis of Assisi. As a professor of the University of Paris, in order to explain the mystical intuition of Saint Francis, Bonaventure used the following theories: the exemplarism theory, the theory of spiritual senses, and his own theory of contuition. The article outlines Bonaventure’s concept of contuition as well as chosen contemporary interpretations of the theory, and then proceeds to evaluate contuition in the light of contemporary philosophy of cognition in the teachings of selected authors. Bonaventure’s contuition is a much underrated concept in the cognition of God theory.

In the case of philosophical justifications of sustainable development it is important to work out epistemological standpoints, adequate to the problems considered in the areas of particular development concepts based on speculative, theoretical knowledge as well as on practical one related to activity and serving its purposes. Epistemology must correlate with the problems that are their material object as well as with goals and cognitive and practical tasks that they (concepts) have to deal with. The present article makes an attempt at presenting reflection on knowledge and cognition by indicating the epistemological basis of the concept of sustainable development. It will endeavor to draw attention to the need of shaping the attitude of the knowing subject, to facilitate adequate understanding of what we commonly address as sustainability and implementing the proposals of sustainable development and verification of the related sources of cognition.

The subject of this article is the issue of the social protection of cultural heritage as a sphere of the potential influence of tourism. The objective is to show the educational potential of tourist cognition practices and their role in creating bonds with cultural heritage. The author analyses the intellectual and emotional aspects of this specific relationship between cognition and protection based on the literature on this subject and his own observations. The main subject of consideration is the specific behaviour of tourists coming into contact with cultural heritage and the educational outcomes of that contact, which enable adopting a reflective attitude towards the relics of the past and thus enable shaping behaviours favourable to the protection of cultural property. Taking into account the prevalence of tourism in the West, tourist cognition, despite its many imperfections and limits, seems to play an active part in the process of the social protection of relics of the past. The emotional aspect of cognition occupies a prominent role in this respect, which supports the thesis that emotions open the way to understanding and stimulating people’s attitudes in the process of social regeneration of heritage.

Opis:
This study used reaction time (RT) and event-related potential (ERP) analysis in an emotion-cognition Eriksen-Flanker (ECEF) task to investigate behavioral and neural abnormalities in individuals with public speaking anxiety (PSA). Although 25 per cent of people worldwide suffer from PSA, there is currently a lack of standardized assessment or biomarkers to detect emotion-cognition abnormalities in individuals with PSA. RT and ERP were compared between 12 subjects with high (H) PSA and 12 subjects with low (L) PSA in the ECEF experiment. EEG was recorded with the 14-channel Emotiv EPOC+. RT data showed a significant Flanker Effect across groups in the neutral and emotional (PSA-related) conditions, with increased Flanker effect in the HPSA group. On average, LPSA subjects were faster than the HPSA subjects in the ECEF task. HPSA subjects showed aberrant ERP responses in two ways. Firstly in the reversed N200 conflict effect with increased frontocentral amplitude in the incongruent compared to the congruent condition. Secondly, in the absence of the P200 frontocentral emotional modulation found in LPSA subjects. In the HPSA group, decreased P200 amplitude is significantly related to impaired behavioral performance in the neutral congruent condition. RT and ERP are useful in modern medicine because they successfully unveiled the biomarkers of abnormalities during the interaction of emotion and cognition. Impaired conflict processing in PSA-related condi- tions was found at the N200 and P200 windows in HPSA individuals.

Opis:
Artykuł zawiera omówienie implementacji hipotezy o systemie lustrzanym do wyjaśniania przedpojęciowego odbioru filmu, z uwzględnieniem roli symulacji ucieleśnionej i empatii jako mechanizmów uczestnictwa w poznawczym i estetycznym doświadczaniu filmu. Przedstawione zostało także zagadnienie metodologiczne projektu estetyki naturalistycznej oraz możliwości syntezy podejścia kognitywnego i fenomenologicznego do wyjaśniania estetycznego doświadczania filmu.
The article explains the origins of the development of cognitive film theory. It also presents two basic orientations within cognitive science - the computational model of cognition and the embodied model of cognition – which function in film theory as two consecutive phases. The embodied model of cognition is explained in the context of both the tradition of phenomenological thought and the achievements of neuroscience, including the discovery of mirror neurons, which, despite the surrounding controversy, became the basis for multidirectional reflection on the reception of films. The article discusses the implementation of the mirror system hypothesis in the explication of the pre-conceptual film perception, including the role of embodied simulation and empathy as mechanisms of participation in cognitive and aesthetic film experience. The methodological issue of the naturalized aesthetics project as well as the possibilities of synthesizing the cognitive and phenomenological approach in the elucidation of the aesthetic reception of film are also presented.

Opis:
Étienne Gilson and Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec notice essential elements that determine philosophical realism. Such discovery allows a philosopher to build realistic concept of object, method and objective of metaphysical cognition thus standing against idealistic tendencies. Realistic object of metaphysical cognition is characterized by realism (intelligibility, self-evidence, extrasubjectiveness), universalism (unity and pluralism), neutralism (beings constituted in the existence considered as a real element of cognition). Realistic method of cognition according to Krąpiec and Gilson has to reject irrational understanding of common sense, abstractionism and cartesianism, while making use of thomistic understanding of common sense, existential judgements and metaphysical separation. Realistic objective of metaphysical cognition is oriented on cognition of causality, cognition of the first cause, understanding of the four Aristotle's causes, recta ratio and recta voluntas and analogous cognition. Due to determinants of realism mentioned before, it is possible to practice thomistic philosophy based on riches of the world given in the cognition.

Opis:
Several studies (Keysar et al., 2012; Lazar et al., 2014) suggest that decisions made in a foreign language are more rational. The authors imply that when thinking in a language which is not our native tongue, analytical, slow, deep-thinking is activated. The question that underlies the present article is whether this is a characteristic of every mental operation in the foreign medium. Studies carried out by Costa et al. (2014), Geipel et al. (2015) and Hadjichristidis et al. (2015) suggest the issue is much more complex than it may seem. The answer to the question above was sought through a study in which 84 Polish advanced users of English as a foreign language were asked to solve mathematical problems from the Cognitive Reflection Test (Frederick, 2005). Initially the subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, who subsequently solved the problems in Polish (native tongue) and in English (foreign language). The article presents the results, discusses them and arrives at a number of conclusions as well as implications for further research.

Research into group creativity with its dynamic, interpersonal, and multi-perspective character poses many challenges, among others, how to collect data and capture its shared nature. In this paper, we discuss the creative process of an ensemble in dance improvisation as an example of vivid and collaborative creative practice. To identify aspects of improvisational dance cognition, we designed and applied a videostimulated recall approach to capturing the multiple perspectives of the shared creative process. We tested the method during an improvisational session with dancers, showing how the recordings of dancers' thought narratives and internal states might be used for studying group creativity. Finally, we presented an audiovisual installation Between Minds and Bodies that aimed to recreate the dancers’ experience and offered immersion into the creative process by accessing individual dancer’s thought processes in the improvised performance while watching the dance improvisation.

Opis:
This paper proposes a relational history of media artifacts, which decentralizes the dominance of the photographer or filmmaker as the absolute author of the work. It adds an alternative account to understanding the creative process and the subsequent study of media forms by discussing film and photographic practices as the reciprocal affective relationship between the maker, their intentions, materials, technologies, non-human agents and the environment. By reorganizing the anthropocentrism of art historical narratives, which typically exclude corporeality and materiality as drivers of human history, we are able to discuss the complex dynamic meshwork of determinants that bring photographic artifacts into existence: the lived, animate, vital materialism at once emergent and mixing of different causalities and temporalities. Within this position, I will provoke discussions of cognition and photography by recalibrating the moment of acting to a model that recognizes a distributed nature of human action into the material world of things. This new materialist position has repercussions for the way we understand processes of creativity and the emergence of media artifacts-seeing these as always already entangled and enmeshed across various corporeal and material, platforms and scales. This paper uses photography as a case study to discuss the broader theme of co-creation between humans, machines and the environment. Using documentary evidence from the archive, I sustain this argument by making a close reading of a particular photographer’s contact sheet, which shows up some of the dynamics of the relational meshwork playing upon the photographer in the field. Through this reading we can begin to think about the implications for the way we understand the emerging aesthetic discourse of technological photographic practices and, more broadly, the cocreative domains of all human activity.

This scientific contribution on human cognition and knowledge, which, among other things, is ma- nifested in the social sphere of communication, intends to clarify not only the importance of mystery but also the phenomenon of the human being and its limited capacity. The presented study aims to draw the attention of readers who specialize mainly in applied, specialized cognitive psychology to elementary processes that allow information to be captured, registered, evaluated and subsequently transmitted in the world of the media. All of this thanks to the diverse variability manifested in hu- man perception (psychological experiences, events, perceptions,...); visualization capacity (memory, fantasy...); imagination (reconstructive, creative, hallucinations...) and especially thinking, the basic process of intellectual understanding.
