Opis:
The paper presents the research results on the possibility of the integration of advanced oxidation process (AOP) involving Fenton reaction with nanofiltration (NF) for dairy effluent treatment. It has been found that Fenton oxidation reduces organic compounds, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. However, NF enables high ions retention derived from both effluent and Fenton oxidation components. As a result, it was possible to obtain water, which, without any harmful effects, could be discharged into environment. This water also fulfilled most of the requirements to be reused in dairy industrial plant.

Opis:
High organic matter content is a basic problem in food industry wastewaters. Typically, the amount and composition of the effluent varies considerably. In the article four groups of advanced processes and their combination of food industry wastewater treatment have been reviewed: electrochemical oxidation (EC), Fenton’s process, ozonation of water and photocatalytic processes. All advanced oxidation processes (AOP`s) are characterized by a common chemical feature: the capability of exploiting high reactivity of HO radicals in driving oxidation processes which are suitable for achieving decolonization and odour reduction, and the complete mineralization or increase of bioavailability of recalcitrant organic pollutants.

W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań rozkładu izomerów fenylolofenolu w środowisku wodnym w polu promieniowania UVC i w układzie H2O2/UVC.
This work presents the experimental results of phenylphenol isomers degradation using UVC radiation and advanced oxidation processes in H2O2/UV system. An important step of this research was the toxicity determination of reaction mixtures before and after degradation processes. The highest PP isomers decay rate was obtained during advanced oxidation in H2O2/UV system. The aqueous solutions of all tested compounds exhibit toxicity against bacteria E. coli. UVC photolysis did not eliminate the toxicity of reaction solutions. While, in case of advanced oxidation in H2O2/UV system the non-toxic solutions were obtained.

Explosive compounds are hazardous to the environment, posing a serious risk to human and animal health and the ecosystem. The primary goal of research was to compare the efficiency of UV/H2O2, photo-Fenton, electro (EO)/ UV/H2O2 processes at near-neutral pH (pH=6) on the degradation of nitramine explosives (NAs), such as hexogen (RDX), octogen (HMX), and tetryl (TET), in an aqueous solution. The effect of operational conditions, likely pH of the solution, initial H2O2 concentration, initial Fe2+ concentration, and solution temperature, was observed. The removal kinetics fit with first-order kinetics and were in the order: photo-Fenton >EO/UV/ H2O2 > UV/ H2O2. The results showed higher rate constant values for TET, RDX and HMX removal by UV/ H2O2 (k = 0.07778, 0.03791 and 0.03786 min-1), EO/UV/ H2O2 (k = 0.16599, 0.1475 and 0.08674 min-1) and photo-Fenton (k = 0.18018, 0.1501 and 0.09336 min-1) processes. Furthermore, TET, RDX and HMX were mineralized at 59.7%, 45.1%, and 25.1 %, respectively, under optimum conditions after 60 min of the photo-Fenton process. From the economic perspective, photo-Fenton only requires 2.132–4.113 kWh m-3 to completely reduce NAs. Finally, acute toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri was defeated after usage of near-neutral photo-Fenton. Thus, photo-Fenton at circum-neutral is promising for low-cost, eco-friendly and efficient processes for treating nitramine explosives in aqueous solutions.

Synthetic dyes are persistent pollutants with poor biodegradability. The present study is about the degradation of direct Congo red dye in aqueous media using the Co-60 gamma radiation source. The experimental conditions such as gamma-ray absorbed doses, amount of oxidant (H2O2) and pH conditions were evaluated. The lambda max of dye solution was noted as 498 nm, and then, decrease in absorbance and reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) were examined. The complete colour removal of dye was observed at 5 kGy, while a signifi cant COD removal was observed at 15 kGy gamma-ray absorbed dose in conjunction with oxidant for 50 mg/L concentration. It was found that pH has no influence on degradation efficiency. A possible degradation pathway was proposed. The radiolytic end products were monitored by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to explore the degradation mechanism. It was imperative to study the oxidative degradation pathway to provide directions for potential applicability of advanced oxidation process (AOP) in industrial wastewater treatment.

In the last few years, RSM method has been used widely to analyze, optimize and evaluate the interaction of independent factors for chemical, biochemical, and environmental processes. This study examined and evaluated the applicability of this method to manage Oilfield Produced Water to prevent marine environment due to the presence of hard degradable compounds by ozonation process. In this study simulated oil-water sample and a homogenizer reactor was used. The main reactor used in this study was impeinger equipped with sintered glass filter through which the treated oil-water was entered to reactor in the form of discontinuous flow. After ozonation and at the end of the reaction time (60 min), the concentration of oil hydrocarbons was determined by a gas chromatography device equipped with a flame ionization detector. The performance of the central composite design (CCD) approach was evaluated by the F-Value, P-Value, R2, lack of fit test and Adequate Precision parameters to determine the influence of effective factors, including ozonation time, pH, ozone dose, and TPH concentration on the TPH removal efficiency. The mean TPH efficiency obtained from the design of the 30-step experiment resulting from surface-response method was 49.903%, with a standard deviation of 12.47. This study showed the high power of model adopted from the central composite design to predict the hydrocarbons removal from oilfield water using advanced oxidation process, and it was proved that this model can be used alone to determine the design space nature.

The present study deals with the development of non-thermal plasma-based AOPs for removal of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment. The plasma itself is generated based on point-to-point geometry under organic solution and can generate hydroxyl radicals, ozone, peroxide and other radicals as the basic species to destruct organic contaminants. Electrical diagnostic in a form of voltage and current waveform was investigated through the variation of time during the formation of plasma channeling. The evolutions of plasma channeling with its physical phenomena were also discussed. The relationship between the electrodes distance towards applied voltage to sustain the plasma were also studied. It was found that the mineralization occurred during plasma treatment to transform the harmful functional group in organic dye solution into harmless species. Simultaneously, the decoloration process by using this submerged plasma treatment system is able to change the orange color of methyl orange solution into clearly transparent water in 30 minutes. The present findings may provide the plasma-based advanced oxidation process as a promising chemical-free and cost competitive AOP process application on specially the waste water treatment in textile industry.

Pharmaceutical wastewater is one of the major complex and toxic industrial effluents containing little or no biodegradable organic matters. In this study, H2O2/UV based advanced oxidation process (AOP) was used to remove organic materials from pharmaceutical industry effluent. For the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal radiation of medium pressure mercury vapor UV lamp was used in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2/UV). Results indicated that the efficiency of COD removal depends on the initial concentration H2O2, oxidation time and pH. The efficiency of COD removal at low H2O2con-centration was very low even coupled with UV light, which can be attributed to the low generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH). At high concentration of H2O2 (500 mg/dm3) and optimum pH (pH = 4), 87.6% removal efficiency could be achieved during 70 min oxidation. For high concentration of H2O2 (500 mg/dm3) at pH 3 and 7, the maximum COD removal efficiency was 28.5% and 15.2% respectively, indicating significant roles of pH and H2O2concentration in the process of COD removal.

The paper presents the possibility of using the ozonation process in landfill leachate pretreatment. The study was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, the landfill leachate was subjected only to the ozone, with the dose varying from 10 mg/dm3 to 40 mg/dm3. As part of this stage of research, the effect of changes in the pH of wastewater undergoing the process of ozonation on the efficiency of TOC removal was examined. For all the tested pH values (pH = 3.5, pH = 7 pH = 8.5 pH = 10), the TOC removal rate constant (kRowo) during ozonization was determined. In the second stage of the study, the ozonation process was facilitated by UV radiation. Additionally in this stage, the rate of generation of OH• radicals was accelerated by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the reactor. The COD: H2O2 ratio by weight was 1:2.5, 1:5 and 1:10 and 1:20. In the last stage of the study, we attempted to assist the ozonation process using ultrasonic field. The employed vibration amplitude amounted to 25μm and sonication time equalled 300 seconds. It was found that the ozonation process is the most effective at alkaline pH (8.5). The TOC removal efficiency was 37% (346 mg/dm3) after 60 minutes of ozonation. The best results of pollutants oxidation measured as COD and TOC removal were observed when the dose of ozone was 20 mg/dm3. The combination of sonication and ozonation has resulted in a reduction of COD and TOC values by 370 mg/dm3 and 126 mg/3, respectively, in comparison to the ozonation process alone. It was found that the most effective process in landfill leachate treatment is the combination of ozonation with hydrogen peroxide addition (COD:H2O2=1:10). The COD, TOC and BOD values were 65%, 62% and 36% lower, respectively, in comparison to ozonation process conducted alone.

This paper aims to investigate the ability of photo-Fenton technology to remove Reactive Red dye (RR-dye) from wastewater using batch and continuous operating modes. The batch mode of photo-Fenton removal of organic content was conducted under the influence of solution pH (3–10), hydrogen peroxide (25–100 ppm), irradiation time (20–90 min), ferrous sulphate (5–20 ppm), and temperature (25–60 °C). For comparison, the continuous treatment was conducted under the influence of the flow rate of the contaminated solution (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mL/min). The results revealed that the treatability of the batch mode was more effective compared to the continuous mode. In the batch process, the organic contaminant was completely removed compared to that of 82% obtained when the continuous system was performed. The optimization process showed that the optimal values of the operating variables in the case of the batch removal of RR-dye were 3, 78 ppm, 90 min, 20 ppm, and 60 °C for pH, hydrogen peroxide, irradiation time, ferrous sulphate, and temperature, respectively. Moreover, the reversion F-value was 21.69, the probability P value was less than 0.001, and the correlation coefficient was (R2 = 0.9455), which illustrative the significance of the model obtained for the batch process.

Opis:
Minimalne stężenia hamujące wyznaczone względem tych szczepów dla sulfanilamidu i sulfametoksazolu wynosiły odpowiednio 15 μmol dm–3 (Microbacterium spp.) i 19 μmol dm–3 (C. freudii).
Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) are often used to degrade of organic pollutants that are resistant to biodegradation and highly toxic. Examples of such substances are sulfonamides classified as synthetic chemotherapeutics agents having a bacteriostatic effect. However, the application of AOP is useful and proper only when the resulting products will be less ecotoxic than substrates. The purpose of our study was to compare the ecotoxicity of sulfanilamide and sulfamethoxazole and products of their oxidation by hydroxyl radicals (HO). These radicals were generated during the photocatalytic reaction carried out in the presence of TiO2. Ecotoxicological assessment was determined using a standardized MARA® toxicity test kit and procedures recommended by the test manufacturer. In MARA® test, eleven genetically diverse microorganisms (ten strains of bacteria and one yeast) are used as bioindicators. It was found, that the most of bioindicators was practically insensitive to sulfonamides investigated at concentrations to 500 μmol dm–3. Microbacterium spp. and Citrobacter freudii were much more sensitive microorganisms than the others. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MTC) determined against these strains to sulfanilamide and sulfamethoxazole were 15 μmol dm–3 (Microbacterium spp.) and 19 μmol dm–3 (C. freudii), respectively. Additionally, it was found that the resultant inhibitory effect on the growth of tested microorganisms decreased during the AOP, but it was much slower than accompanying degradation of sulfonamides. The strongest effect was observed with microorganisms more sensitive to sulfonamides. However, in a few cases it was observed the increase in the inhibition during the AOP.

In the first stage, coking wastewater was treated only by ozone, the dose of which varied from 10 mg/dm3 to 40 mg/dm3. The effect of pH during ozonation process was determined on TOC removal efficiency. For all of the pH values (pH = 3.5, pH = 7, pH = 8.5 and pH = 11.5) the TOC removal rate constant was determined. In the second stage, the rate OH radicals generation was accelerated by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the reactor. The ratio by weight of COD: H2O2 was 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:10 and 1:20. In the last stage of the study, we attempted to assist the ozonation process with ultrasonic field. The sonication time was 8 minutes and the amplitude was 61.5 μm. It was found that the ozonation process is the most effective at alkaline pH (8.5). The TOC removal efficiency was 34% (1470 mg/dm3) after 60 minutes of ozonation. The best results of oxidation of pollutants measured as COD and TOC removal were observed when the dose of ozone was 30 mg/dm3.The combination of sonication and ozonation has resulted in a reduction of COD and TOC values by 1000 mg/dm3 and 300 mg/dm3, respectively, in comparison to ozonation process alone. It was found that the most effective process in coke wastewater treatment is the combination of ozonation with hydrogen peroxide addition (COD:H2O2=1:10). The COD, TOC and BOD value were 54%, 35% and 20% lower, respectively, in comparison to ozonation process conducted alone.

Water pollution and the lack of access to clean water are general global problems that result from the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities. Petroleum refinery wastewaters are considered as a major challenge to the environment and their treatment is mandatory. The present work investigated the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from petroleum refinery effluents generated from the Al-Dewaniya petroleum refinery plant located in Iraq by utilizing a novel graphite–graphite electro-Fenton (EF) system. The electrochemical reactor was a tubular type with a cylindrical cathode made from porous graphite and concentric porous graphite rode acts as an anode. By adopting the response surface methodology (RSM), the impacts of different operating variables on the COD removal were investigated. The optimal conditions were a current density of 25 mA/cm2, FeSO4 concentration of 1.4 mM, and electrolysis time of 90 minutes, which resulted in the COD removal efficiency (RE%) of 99% at a specific energy consumption (SEC) of 10.34 kWh/kg COD. The results indicated that both current density and concentration of FeSO4 have a major impact on the elimination of COD, while time has a minor effect. The adequacy of the model equation was demonstrated by its high R2 value (0.987). The present work demonstrated that the graphite–graphite EF system could be considered as an effective approach for removing of COD from petroleum refinery wastewaters.

Opis:
The possible use of ozone and advanced oxidation processes (AOP) to degrade and eliminate lignin compounds from aqueous solutions, and the determination of the required ozone dose are the primary objectives of this study. The influence of the oxidation methods on the subsequent biological decomposition of the by-products was also investigated.During ozonisation of the alkalilignin aqueous solutions, the polymer is degraded to a degree depending on the ozone dose. Lignin content decreased by about 40 to 96.6% at an ozone dose of 0.1 and 3.6 mgO3/mgCOD, respectively, accompanied by a drop of COD in the range of 8.8 - 69.6%. An ozone dose of about 1 mgO3/mgCOD is required to reduce the lignin content by more than 80%; at such a dose, the reduction of COD was about 35%. Lignin proved to be a substance that is practically insusceptible to biodegradation under the test conditions. An increase of the susceptibility to biodegradation of the lignin disintegration products could have been observed at an appropriately high dose of ozone.

Technology advancement improves the quality of life, however, it might also introduce new pollutants to the ecosystem, which needs to deal with for the goal of a sustainable ecosystem. Municipal and industrial wastewater has always been important in improving the quality of life while maintaining the sustainability of our planet simultaneously. The diversity of pollutants in wastewater requires more advanced and demanding treatment processes. The ozonation, as a crucial part of the advanced oxidation processes, is a superior oxidation method compared to traditional oxidation methods. After the recognition of ozone as GRAS (generally recognized as safe), its applications have diversified and is used currently for microbial inactivation, degradation of recalcitrant organic compounds, removal of a diverse range of micropollutants, solubilization and reduction of sludge, and removal of color and odor components in wastewaters treatment processes. However, some considerable challenges still exist towards its universal application, such as high ozone generation costs, diversity of pollutants, and formation of ozonation by-products, which still require further studies. The main theme of this review paper is the transformation of traditional oxidation methods into advanced oxidation processes and the role of ozonation in this regard, including its applications, by-products, and its comparison with the traditional oxidation methods and advanced oxidation processes.

Opis:
The study of the possibility of removing organic compounds from wastewater originating from the biodiesel purification stage by two catalytic processes, HSO5-/transition metal and Fenton method has been presented. The source of the ion HSO5-is potassium monopersulphate (2KHSO5∙KHSO4∙K5SO4) (Oxone) that may be decomposed into radicals (OH., SO4-., SO5-.) by means of transition metal as Co(II). Different concentrations were used for both compounds and the combination ([Co2+] = 1.00μM/[HSO5-] = 5.00·10-2 M) achieved the highest COD removal (60%) and complete decomposition of the oxidant was verified for contact times of 45 min. This process has some advantages comparing to the conventional Fenton method such as the absence of the costly pH adjustment and the Fe(III) hydroxide sludge which characterize this treatment process. The Fenton process showed that the combination of [H2O2] = 2.00M/[Fe2+] = 0.70 M was the best and archived COD removal of 80%. The treatments studied in this research have achieved high COD removal, but the wastewater from the biodiesel purification stage presents very high parametric values of Chemical Oxygen Demand (667,000 mgO2/L), so the final COD concentration reached is still above the emission limit of discharge in surface water, according the Portuguese Law (Decree-Law 236/98). However, both treatments have proved to be feasible techniques for the pre-oxidation of the wastewater under study and can be considered as a suitable pre-treatment for this type of wastewaters. A rough economic analysis of both processes was, also, made.

Opis:
The study presented the results of the examinations obtained during treatment of dairy wastewater in a membrane photoreactor where photocatalysis was sequentially combined with low-pressure membrane process. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of degradation of the contaminants contained in such wastewater during photocatalysis and in the arrangement that combined photocatalysis with ultrafiltration. Several experiments were performed in order to determine the most beneficial conditions of the photocatalysis process, e.g. the dose of the photocatalysts used (TiO2 and ZnO), duration of the process and pH of wastewater subjected to oxidation. The dose of titanium dioxide was changed from 1 to 40 g/dm3, whereas the content of zinc oxide ranged from 1 to 6 g/dm3. The results obtained in the study showed that the extension of the irradiation time to over 30 minutes (TiO2) and over 45 minutes (ZnO) during photocatalysis does not lead to increased removal of contaminants from the dairy wastewater. It was also demonstrated that the increase in the doses of both photocatalysts does not lead to the increase in the efficiency of their treatment. In the case of treatment of dairy wastwater with TiO2, the photocatalysis occurred most effectively for its dose of 10 g/dm3. Removal rates for COD, TOC and total nitrogen were 58% (1670 mg/dm3), 62% (450 mg/dm3) and 56% (128 mg/dm3), respectively. Replacing titanium dioxide with zinc oxide (ZnO – 2 g/dm3) in the photocatalysis process allowed for obtaining higher degrees of removal of contaminants determined as COD, TOC and total nitrogen to the level of 77.8% (870 mg/dm3), 62% (445 mg/dm3) and 52% (139 mg/dm3), respectively. Since both photocatalysts were supplied to the photoreactor in the form of a suspension, the membrane in the next reactor represented an efficient barrier for their particles. It was observed that higher volumetric stream of the permeate was obtained during the process of low-pressure membrane filtration of sewage initially treated in the process of photocatalysis with titanium dioxide (4.6·10-5 m3/m2·s – TiO2 and 4.1·10-5m3/m2·s – ZnO). It was found that the ultrafiltration process in the case of the feed material with TiO2 led to the reduction in COD, TOC and total nitrogen by 78% (370 mg/dm3), 72% (126 mg/dm3) and 40% (80 mg/dm3). Slightly better quality of permeate was obtained when the feed material contained ZnO powder. Degree of retention of the contaminants COD, TOC and total nitrogen were 68% (280 mg/dm3), 66% (143 mg/dm3) and 42% (76 mg/dm3), respectively.
Przeprowadzono szereg eksperymentów w celu ustalenia najkorzystniejszych warunków prowadzenia procesu fotokatalizy tj. dawka zastosowanych fotokatalizatorów (TiO2 i ZnO), czas prowadzenia procesu oraz wartość pH ścieków poddawanych utlenianiu. Stopień usunięcia ChZT, OWO i azotu ogólnego wynosił odpowiednio 58% (1670 mg/dm3), 62% (450 mg/dm3) i 56% (128 mg/dm3). Zaobserwowano, że wyższy objętościowy strumień permeatu uzyskano w trakcie prowadzenia procesu niskociśnieniowej filtracji membranowej ścieków wstępnie podczyszczonych w procesie fotokatalizy z ditlenkiem tytanu (4,6·10-5 m3/m2·s – TiO2 i 4,1·10-5 m3/m2·s – ZnO). Stopień retencji zanieczyszczeń ChZT, OWO i azotu ogólnego wynosił odpowiednio 68% (280 mg/dm3), 66 % (143 mg/dm3) i 42% (76 mg/dm3).

In the present study, ZnS nanoparticles were prepared using the mechanochemical method. The ZnS nanoparticles prepared were doped with different concentrations of manganese using metal acetate and manganese acetate by mechanochemical method. The as-prepared particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the prepared nanoparticles samples, in the photocatalytic degradation of malachite green, had been investigated. The nanoparticles were photo induced, generating hole transfer for photocatalytic activity. The photodegradation of malachite green was observed at different pH (2-5) values, dye concentrations (10-100mg/L) and amount of ZnS nanoparticles (1-2.5 g/L). About 95% degradation of dye was observed on the addition of 2 g/L ZnS in 50 mg/L dye solution after 90 minutes illumination at 125 W. Degradation has been increased up to 99% using UV/nanoparticles/H2O2 (50 mL/L) combined process. The degradation efficiency was also compared using Mn doped ZnS nanoparticles (Zn1-x MnxS, where x = 0.01, 0.22 and 0.3). Maximum of 97% degradation was observed with 0.01% concentration of Mn. Kinetics study and performance of UV/ZnS, UV/ZnS/H2O2, UV/doped ZnS processes were evaluated to compare the efficiency of different processes.

Opis:
The possibility of removing organic compounds from wastewater originating from the photochemical production of printed circuit boards by use of waste acidification and disposal of precipitated photopolymer in the first stage and the UV-Fenton method in a second stage has been presented. To optimize the process of advanced oxidation, the RSM (Response Surface Methodology) for three independent factors was applied, i.e. pH, the concentration of Fe(II) and H2O2 concentration. The use of optimized values of individual parameters in the process of wastewater treatment caused a decrease in the concentration of the organic compounds denoted as COD by approx. 87% in the first stage and approx. 98% after application of both processes. Precipitation and the decomposition of organic compounds was associated with a decrease of wastewater COD to below 100 mg O2/L whereas the initial value was 5550 mg O2/L. Decomposition of organic compounds and verification of the developed model of photopolymers removal was also carried out with use of alternative H2O2 sources i.e. CaO2, MgO2, and Na2CO3·1,5H2O2.

Opis:
Surfactants after their use are discharged into aquatic ecosystems. These compounds may be harmful to fauna and flora in surface waters or can be toxic for microorganisms of the activated sludge or biofilm in WWTP. In order to determine effectiveness of different advanced oxidation processes on the degradation of surfactants, in this study the degradation of anionic surfactants in aqueous solution using photolysis by 254 nm irradiation and by advanced oxidation process in a H2O2/UVC system was investigated. Two representatives of anionic surfactants, linear alkyl benzene sulphonate (LAS-R11-14) and ether carboxylic derivate (EC-R12-14E10) were tested. The influence of pH, initial surfactant concentration and dose of hydrogen peroxide on the degradation was also studied. Results show outstanding effectiveness of the H2O2/UVC system in the removal of surfactant from aqueous solutions.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań degradacji wybranych surfaktantów anionowych w środowisku wodnym przy zastosowaniu promieniowania UVC i zaawansowanego utleniania w układzie H2O2/UVC.
The article discusses research aimed at comparing the effectiveness of treatment of waste-water from coke industry in the volume of coagulation and advanced oxidation using Fenton's reagent. In the case of the first of the methods tested four types of iron coagulants are produced by the Department "Kemipol" a common name of the PIX. These were: PIX-112 PIX-123, PIX and PIX-122-113. Selects the best possible coagulant, determined its optimal dose and pH of the reaction solution (pH = 5, 9). Advanced oxidation process was carried out for treatment different acidity (pH = 3.5 and pH = 5), using different doses of iron (Fe 2 +) changed from 0.1 g / dm 3 to 0.8 g / dm 3 while maintaining the ratio of the concentrations of Fe2 + / H2O2 at 1:3. Given the very low degree of purification of these waters in both cases, prevent their discharge into the natural reservoir or sewage, treated them in the process of thoroughly cleaning of reverse osmosis. The effectiveness of the physicochemical wastewater treatment processes of coke have been identified based on the evolution of pollutants such as chemical oxygen demand and organic carbon content and total concentration of phenol index, free cyanide, sulfides and iron general.

Opis:
Chemical oxidation processes: Fenton process and catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ ions were investigated for effectiveness of formaldehyde (FA) oxidation. The influence of operational variables — O3, H2O2, Mn2+ and Fe2+ concentrations and reaction time were investigated. Researches were carried out on aqueous solution of FA, which concentration was 500 mg/l. Fenton process was investigated at pH 3 and catalytic ozonation at pH 7, 10 and 12. Results revealed that Fenton process was much more effective in FA degradation than catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ as a catalyst. The optimal H2O2/Fe2+ dosage for a Fenton process was 2000/1000 mg/l. COD and FA concentrations were reduced 59,6% and 79,5%. In case of catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ the eff ectiveness was much less and it was the biggest at pH 12 and Mn2+ dosage 25 mg/l where COD and FA concentration were reduced 14% and 38%. Therefore, Fenton process can be promising technology for FA wastewater pretreatment.

Dye wastewater is one of typically non-biodegradable industrial effluents. A new process linking Fenton’s oxidation with biological oxidation proposed in this study was investigated to degrade the organic substances from real dye wastewater. During the combination process, the Fenton’s oxidation process can reduce the organic load and enhance biodegradability of dye wastewater, which is followed by biological aerated filter (BAF) system to further remove organic substances in terms of discharge requirement. The results showed that 97.6% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by the combination process was achieved at the optimum process parameters: pH of 3.5, H22

Opis:
Non-ionic surfactants in water solutions were made subject to degradation by the Fenton process. The species used in the study (Tritons, Tergitols and Symperonics) differed in the presence of aromatic rings in the molecule, in the type of the alkyl chain and in the length of the polyoxyethylene chain. Consideration was given to the problem of how the structure of the surfactant molecule affects the course of the oxidation process and the final mineralization of the solution. Analyzed were the following parameters: total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand and absorbancy of the solution. The study has substantiated the noticeably high efficiency of the Fenton process in degrading non-ionic surfactants.

The degradation of pentoxifylline (PTX) using H2O2, UV, H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton processes has been examined in aqueous solutions. The influence of oxidation agent and initial PTX concentration, on H2O2, H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions was investigated. The addition of inorganic ions (Cl, NO3, SO42– and CO32–) on the degradation efficiency of PTX was tested for H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton processeses. The results indicate that the photo-Fenton reaction is the most sufficient for PTX removal. The complete pharmaceutics decomposition is achieved after 5 min under optimized concentration of FeSO4,·7 H2O2 and H2O2. The degradation of PTX is inhibited in the presence of inorganic matter in H2O2/UV and Fenton reaction. In the photo-Fenton process addition of above compounds does not affect the reaction rate. Structures of ten products of photo-Fenton reaction have been proposed.

Opis:
The novel technologies used in environmental engineering were discussed in this paper – the formation of aerobic granules, the Anammox process, the advanced oxidation processes, the use of fungi for dyes decolorization, constructed wetlands, the soil phytoremediation supported by rhizosphere microorganisms and the use of molecular biology technique in environmental engineering. The structure of granular sludge is influenced by EPS production. The average diameter and density of biogranules increase due to EPS production. Although polysaccharides are essential, proteins were found to be the predominant component of aerobic granular sludge. Compared to loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) showed more significant correlations with granules formation. This investigation will contribute towards a better understanding of the behavior and composition of EPS in sequencing batch reactors. The traditional nitrification and denitrification processes proceed well with typical municipal wastewater. Nevertheless, there are also nitrogen-rich wastewater streams like landfill leachate or reject waters from dewatering of digested sludge, for which traditional nitrification/denitrification can be generally ineffective due to free ammonia inhibition of nitrification and unfavorable biodegradable carbon content for denitrification. Because of high requirements for oxygen and the necessity for addition of external carbon source, treating such nitrogen-rich streams with nitrification/denitrification would become expensive and unsustainable. The least resources consuming pathway for the conversion of ammonium to nitrogen gas is a combination of partial nitrification and the Anammox process. The main advantages of this process compared to the conventional nitrification/denitrification are: low sludge production, decrease of the aeration costs by almost 60% (only half of the ammonia is oxidized to nitrite in the nitritation process without further oxidation to nitrate), and no need for external organic carbon source addition (Anammox process). Furthermore, anammox bacteria oxidize ammonium under anoxic conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor, and converse energy for CO2 fixation. Additionally, the biomass yield of the Anammox process is very low (0.08 kg VSS kg NH4-N-1 in comparison to 1 kg VSS kg NH4-N-1 in conventional nitrification/denitrification process) consequently, little sludge is produced. The low sludge production is another factor that contributes to the substantially lower operation costs compared to conventional denitrification systems. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are oxidative methods which are based on the generation of the hydroxyl radicals, which are very reactive and less selective than other oxidants. In the wastewater treatment technology, AOPs can be used in a combination with conventional biological techniques (so called hybrid processes), as pre- and post- treatment processes. The advanced oxidation processes have been used in order to increase the biodegradability and also detoxification of the wastewater. The ability of fungi to degrade lignin-cellulose debris is well known. In addition to these natural molecules they may also degrade synthetic compounds, including synthetic dyes. High effectiveness of Evans blue and brilliant green mixture removal by all tested strains was demonstrated. The process was the most effective and fast in shaken conditions. Finally strain MB removed 90% of tested mixture in shaken samples after 96h. It was the best result reached among all the strains used in the experiment. High removal efficiency was accompanied by a decrease of toxicity (from V class to III class in test with D. magna and from IV class even to non-toxic in test with L. minor). The highest decrease of phytotoxicity was noticed in samples with shaken biomass in which the effect of dyes mixture elimination was the best. The research indicates very high potential of tested strains for decolorization and detoxification of dyes mixture. Constructed wetlands are man-made system mimicking the process occurring in natural wetlands. These systems are considered to be an alternative to more technically advanced waste water treatment technologies. The development of constructed wetlands is envisaged to pursue the following directions grouped according to: the type of the waste water to be treated, target contaminants, treatment intensification methods, ancillary benefits and the locality. Mycorrhiza fungi can be used for phytoremediation proccess. They support plant growth by lowering the stress caused by the lack of phosphorus and water. They produce enzymes participating in several stages of xenobiotics decomposition, which is helpful in their further biodegradation performed by the other rhisospherical organisms. The natural colonisation of PAHs contaminated soil is a long-term process. It could be shortend by adding fungal propagules as an inoculum to the soil. Fungi used for the injections should be isolated from PAHs contaminated soil. That guarantees their survival and development in the contaminated environment. The level of PAHs elimination from soil depends on a type of bioremediation modification used. It was shown that the best results are obtained with monocotylous plants combined with bacterial and fungal biopreparations obtained from contaminated soil. The symbiosis of mycorrhiza fungi with monocotylous plants caused ca. 40% increase of 3, 4, 5 and 30% of 6-ring hydrocarbons removal from soil in comparison with the conventional methods. Important aspect of environmental protection and engineering is the possibility for qualitative and quantitative monitoring of complex microbial communities, responsible for biotechnological processes, such as: soil bioremediation, wastewater treatment or composting. Due to the fact that most of the environmental bacteria cannot be grown in the laboratory conditions molecular techniques are widely used in environmental engineering. Among these methods the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-based and hybridization-based (such as Fluorescent in situ Hybridization; FISH) techniques are known to be the most useful.
