Opis:
The present study investigates the potential of seed priming for induction of salt tolerance in French marigold at early growth stage. Treatments were combination of priming techniques viz. hydropriming, halopriming (50 mM CaCl2), hormonal priming with salicylic acid (100 ppm) and ascorbate priming (100 ppm) each for 24 h. Primed seeds were exposed to salinity levels (0; 50 and 100 mM NaCl) during germination and emergence assays. All priming treatments hastened germination and emergence attributes under saline or non-saline conditions as compared to those of non-primed (control) seeds. Seeds of French marigold primed with ascorbate followed by CaCl2, salicylic acid and hydropriming enhanced final germination, speed of germination, root and shoot length and dry mass of French marigold seedlings. This was interpreted by minimized mean emergence time and time to 50% emergence. Additionally, it was also observed that all priming agents particularly calcium salt and ascorbate maintained ionic homeostasis in salt stressed seedlings. It is concluded that CaCl2, ascorbate and salicylic acid were the most effective priming agents to ameliorate the adverse effects of salinity in French marigold due to lower uptake of Na+ and higher uptake of K+ in the seedlings.

Opis:
A sub-sample of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv.ILC482) seeds was kept  as control and two other sub- samples were aged at 40 °C for 3 and 5 days. Consequently, three seed lots with different levels of vigor were provided. These seed lots were soaked in distilled water at 15°C for 12 and 18 hours and then dried back to initial moisture content at a room temperature of 20-22°C. Then seeds were sown in the field as split plot factorial based on RCB design. Hydro-priming improved leaf chlorophyll content index of plants from different  seed  lots.  Hydro-priming also  enhanced  stomatal  conductance of plants  from all  seed  lots under all  irrigation  levels,  but this  advantage for plants  from low vigor seed  lots  particularly under limited  irrigations  was higher  than that  for other  treatments. Plants  from high vigor seed  lot under different irrigation treatments had higher relative water content, compared with those from low vigor seed lots. Hydro-priming improved relative water content, membrane stability and grain yield of chickpea plants from different  seed lots  under various  irrigation treatments. It was concluded that hydro-priming to some extent can repair aged seeds and improve their performance under different irrigation treatments.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of seed priming in improving seed germination and seedling vigor of Vicia villosa under laboratory conditions. Chemical stimulators included: gibberellic acid (125,250 and 500 ppm), salicylic acid (100,200 and 300 mg/lit) and extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %). This experiment was carried out as factorial experiment based on a randomized completely design, with four replications. The results showed that Eucalyptus camaldulensis extract had inhibitive effect on germination and early seedling growth of Vicia villosa. Early seedling growth of Vicia villosa increased by pretreatment of seeds in chemical stimulators so that the highest effect was observed in gibberellic acid (250 ppm). The chemical stimulators don’t have any effect on germination speed. Interaction effects of allelopathic and pretreatment with chemical stimulators were significance on germination percentage, root, shoot and plant length and seed vigor index.

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied through seed priming and foliar spray on growth and yield of three okra cultivars grown under calcareous soils. The cultivars of Punjab Selection and Sabzpari produced significantly higher number of branches and leaves per plant, pod length and diameter and pod yield as compared to cv. Green ferry, while, cv. Punjab selection produced significantly greater number of flowers and pods per plant as compared to other two cultivars. Seed germination (%), plant height, and fruit set (%) were not affected by the cultivars. Among the PGR treatments, seed primed with GA3 resulted in significantly higher germination percentage and greater plant height at flowering. Seed priming and foliar spray with NAA and GA3 were effective in increasing the final plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and number of pods per plant and fruit set (%), fresh weight per pod and pod yield. However, pod diameter, pod moisture content and dry weight per pod were not influenced by the PGR treatments applied. These results suggested that the PGRs have great potential to improve seed germination, enhance growth and increase yield of okra cultivars under calcareous soils.

Seed is the most crucial and prime input in agriculture, and the seed must be of high quality. Seed priming is one of the reliable and cost-effective strategies to enhance seed germination and seedling establishment in crops. This study was conducted to determine the effects of seed priming with Mg(NO3)2 (S1) and ZnSO4 (S2) in two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties (HUW-468 and HUW-510) on germination and seedling growth. Varied levels of Mg(NO3)2 and ZnSO4 from C0 to C11 were used for the present study and number of seed germinated, seedling establishment and biochemical parameters were recorded. From the study of germination %, mean germination time (MGT), mean germination rate (MGR), coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG), germination rate index (GRI) (% / day), germination index (GI), seedling vigor (SV), shoot, root and seedling length, α-amylase activity, soluble and insoluble sugar content and protein content, it was revealed that 7.5 mM of Mg(NO3)2 and 0.05 mM of ZnSO4 were the best treatments in improving seedling establishment, performance and biochemical status of wheat seed. Further, this analysis also reveals a strong correlation between the seedling establishment and the activity of -amylase and protein content.

Opis:
Seed priming is one of the potential physiological approaches to enhance the seed germination under the salinity stress. The present study examined the role of two seed priming molecules: salicylic acid (SA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), in enhancing the salt tolerance of lentil seeds at germination stage. Salinity stress caused significant decrease in germination percentage and primary root elongation. This decrease was associated with significant increase in lipid peroxidation and total lipid (TL) contents in embryonic axis. The catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxydase (GPOX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities remained unchanged or decreased significantly under the influence of salt stress, in both embryonic axis and cotyledons. Starch mobilization was not affected by the salt stress. The two priming treatments effectively alleviated the negative effects of salinity stress. SA and H2O2 applications after dose optimization resulted in a significant enhancement of germination percentage and primary root elongation. No significant changes in starch, soluble sugars contents and SOD activity were detected following SA and H2O2 treatments. Seed priming treatments triggered the activities of GPOX and CAT and caused the reduction in lipid peroxidation, especially in embryonic axis. TL content and especially the fatty acid C18:3 increased after SA applications. Better performance under salt stress of primed lentil seeds was associated with lower lipid peroxidation, and activation of enzymatic antioxidative defense system. Obtained results confirm the potential for using SA and H2O2 to improve germination and plant growth under salt stress conditions.

Sugar beet seeds var. Melodia were primed on germination using three different methods: 24 h in water, 21+3 h in water (seeds were dried between 2 cycles) and 24 h in solution of UG MAX - commercially used bacterial treatment. Control combination were non-treated sugar beet seeds. Germination ability, speed and uniformity were examined in different water content in germination medium: 15%, 25% and 65% respectively. The highest differences were observed in 25% moisture of blotting paper. All methods of seed treatment improved germination speed and ability, especially measured after 4 days of germination. After 14 days differences were not significant. Method of priming in water for 24 hours appeared to be most effective in improving germination course under conditions of water shortage. Root systems of seedlings obtained from primed seeds were analyzed with special scanner EPSON Scan LA 2400 and computer programs WinRHIZO and XLRhizo. Results showed that seedlings obtained from seeds primed for 24 h in water produced the most advanced root system. Their seedlings formed thicker roots then others. Volume of their root system was also bigger. There was no influence of this method of priming on a total root length.
Nasiona buraka cukrowego odmiany Melodia zostały pobudzone do kiełkowania trzema różnymi metodami: 24 h w wodzie, 21 +3 h w wodzie (nasiona zostały wysuszone pomiędzy cyklami pobudzania) oraz 24 h w roztworze preparatu bakteryjnego UG MAX. Kombinację kontrolną stanowiły surowe, niepobudzane nasiona. Zdolność, szybkość i równomierność kiełkowania zostały ocenione w różnych warunkach wilgotności podłoża - 15, 25 i 65% zawartości wody.

This study investigated the possibility of using phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) with plant-growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities to improve the growth properties of rice plants under ferruginous ultisol (FU) conditions through bio-priming. The following PSB with PGP properties were used in this study: Bacillus cereus strain GGBSU 1, Proteus mirabilis strain TL14-1, and Klebsiella variicola strain AUH-KAM-9, which were previously isolated and characterized based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Biosafety analysis of the PSB isolates was conducted using blood agar. The rice seeds were then bio primed with the PSB for 3, 12, and 24 h and then sown in a composite FU soil sample. Differences in germinat ion bioassay were investigated 15 weeks after bio-priming using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), morphology, physiology, and biomass parameters. The composite FU soil used in this study had high pH, low bioavailable phosphorus, low water-holding capacity, and high iron levels, which resulted in low growth properties of rice seeds without bio-priming in the FU soil. Germination parameters were improved in seeds bio primed with the PSB, especially after 12 h of priming, compared with seeds without priming. SEM showed higher bacterial colonization in bio primed seeds. Bio-priming of rice seeds with the studied PSB under FU soil conditions significantly improved seed microbiome, rhizocolonization, and soil nutrient properties, thereby enhancing the growth properties of rice. This indicated the ability of PSB to solubilize and mineralize soil phosphate and improve phosphorus availability and soil properties for optimum plant usage in phosphate-stressed and iron toxic soils.

Seeds of maize (cv. SC AR68) were divided into three sub-samples, one of which with a 100% germina-tion was kept as high vigor seed lot (V1). The other two samples were artificially aged at 40°C for 2 and 3 days, reducing normal germination to 98% (V2) and 93% (V3), respectively. Each of these samples was subse-quently divided into four sub-samples, one of which was kept as unprimed and three other samples were hy-dro-primed at 15°C for 7, 14 and 21 h, and then their moisture content reduced to about 20% in a room at 20–22°C. The experiment was undertaken in 2016 as factorial based on randomized complete block design in three replicates. seed aging and hydro-priming had no significant effects on leaf temperature, Fv/Fm, CCI and plant biomass due to regular irrigation. Seed aging reduced, but hydro-priming enhanced LAI, grain yield and harvest index of the resultant plants. Grain yield of plants from high vigor seed lot (V1) was 23.5% and 64.5% greater than that of V2 and V3 plants. Seed hydro-priming for 21 h also increased grain yield of maize by about 32%. Therefore, hydro-priming for 21 h is the best pretreatment to improve field performance and yield of maize.

Opis:
A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine if separation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds by size might be effective in germinability of aged and primed seeds and subsequent seedling vigour. A known soybean seed lot was separated into four size classes using round-hole screens. The seed lots were deteriorated by rapid aging and invigorated by hydro- and halo-priming. These pre-treated seeds were planted in rolled paper towels and the results were evaluated according to ISTA rules. The small soybean seeds had higher speed of germination than the other size classes. The seedlings produced from large and medium seeds were longer and heavier than those from other size classes. Our results indicated that the large seeds had less sensitivity to short-term aging condition owing to the number of normal seedlings, while the deterioration more increased the germination time of large and medium seeds, compared to small ones. The alleviatory effects of halo-priming on deterioration of seeds are greater compared with hydro-priming. Although there are some debates, the present data further indicate that larger soybean seeds are susceptible to aging condition.

W większości doświadczeń obserwowano zwiększenie zdolności, szybkości i równomierności kiełkowania.

Oceniano kiełkowanie i wigor nasion niekondycjonowanych i kondycjonowanych.
Three seed priming techniques: hydropriming, halopriming and osmopriming, were compared for their effects on germination and vigour of pansy (Viola × wittrockiana Gams.) seeds at 20°C, 30°C and 35°C. Seeds were hydroprimed in the restricted volumes of water (600 and 700 μl H2O·g seed-1, 2, 3 or 4 days), haloprimed in KNO3 solution (-1.5 MPa, 5 days), and osmoprimed in polyethylene glycol solutions (-1.0, -1.25 or -1.5 MPa PEG 8000, 7 days) at 15°C or 20°C. Seed germination and vigour tests were performed for untreated and primed seeds. Generally, hydropriming negatively affected the speed of germination, the percentage of germinating seeds and germination capacity. Halopriming accelerated seed germination at 20°C, 30°C and 35°C but did not influence the percentage of germinating seeds and germination capacity. Osmopriming of seeds in PEG solution of osmotic potential –1.0 MPa at 20°C not only improved germination rates at 20°C, 30°C, and 35°C to the highest extent, but also increased percentage of germinating seeds at 30°C and 35°C most effectively and positively affected seed germination capacity at 20°C and 30°C.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-sowing seeds treatments on some agro-physiological parameters of sugar beets. The selected seeds treatments were: laser stimulation, hydropriming and combination of hydropriming and laser radiation. The impact of the seeds stimulation was analysed by determining the acid phosphatase activity, concentration of phosphate and photosynthetic pigments in leaves as well as nutrient status and some yield parameters of the roots. The plants were assayed four times during vegetation period. Experiment shown that different priming methods had relatively small effect on both the level of orthophosphate and total phosphorus concentration. On the other hand, the plants raised from seeds both hydro- and laser-primed remained more stable level of phosphate during whole vegetative season than remaining plants. The highest activity of acid phosphatase was observed in the younger plants and amongst different seed treatments, plants grown from non-primed seeds and laser primed seeds showed the highest enzyme activity. In the later stages of growth the activity considerably lowered. Considering the effect of different seeds treatments it was observed a significant increase in enzyme activity in plants emerged from the hydroprimed or laser stimulated seeds as well as an increment of chlorophylls in plants emerged from the hydroprimed seeds and both hydro- and laser primed ones. Seeds stimulation had a positive effect on the potassium content particularly in leaves of sugar beet and on some yield parameters of the roots. Concluding, it can be stated that the effect of pre-sowing seed stimulation (priming) was visible during the entire growing season and amongst the examined methods of seeds treatment, hydropriming sole or in a combination with laser radiation caused the highest alterations in assayed parameters.

Opis:
Priming is a treatment applied for seed enhancement. Brassica vegetable seeds are commonly affected by Alternaria brassicicola. The changes in germination and vigour of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) seeds subjected to two priming methods in the presence of A. brassicicola were investigated. The following treatments were applied: uninoculated non-primed seeds (control), seeds inoculated with A. brassicicola (2∙104 spores ml-1), uninoculated and inoculated seeds hydroprimed for 1–2 days, and uninoculated and inoculated seeds osmoprimed for 1–4 days. The percentage of germinating seeds, germination capacity, the percentages of diseased seedlings and dead seeds were determined. The speed of germination, tetrazolium staining index, and electrical conductivity described seed vigour. The presence of A. brassicicola on/in seeds was confirmed on CW semiselective agar. Osmopriming was conducive to penetration of A. brassicicola into kohlrabi seeds. The presence of the fungus had no influence on the percentage of germinating seeds, but a significantly lower germination capacity and a higher percentage of diseased seedlings and dead seeds were observed after inoculation. Non-primed inoculated seeds germinated faster than uninoculated ones. Despite the presence of A. brassicicola, osmotic priming improved seed vigour as measured by the speed of seed germination and electrical conductivity. The results of the tetrazolium vigour test showed its limited usefulness for seeds heavily infected with A. brassicicola.
W pracy analizowano wpływ dwóch metod kondycjonowania na kiełkowanie i wigor nasion kalarepy (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) inokulowanych A. brassicicola.

Opis:
Organic seed to perform well must show high and fast germination. Priming is a popular method of germination course improvement. Combination of priming with herbal treatment can give simultaneously a protection of seeds and seedlings against pathogens. The aim of the study was to determine the usefulness and effectiveness of seeds conditioning with some herbal infusions. The tests were performed in the laboratory and in the growth chamber. In the experiment, the effect of conditioning simultaneously reed beet seed (var. Czerwona Kula) and sugar beet seed (var. Janosik) was examined. Beet seed lots were conditioned in infusions of: chamomile (concentration 30 and 100%), sage (concentration 30% and 100%), and a mixture of chamomile and sage herbal infusions (15% + 15%) and in pure water. Raw and unprimed seeds were the control combination. The study determined: laboratory germination ability, mean time and uniformity of germination, and in the growth chamber: emergence ability, mean time and spread of emergence. The results showed the most effective influence of conditioning in water, 30% infusion of sage and mixed chamomile and sage 15+15%. Chamomile extract had an unfavorable influence, especially on red beet seeds.
Badania przeprowadzono w komorze klimatycznej i w fitotronie. Jednocześnie badano wpływ zabiegów na nasiona buraka ćwikłowego (odm. Czerwona Kula) i buraka cukrowego (odm. Janosik). W komorze klimatycznej określono: laboratoryjną zdolność kiełkowania oraz średni czas i równomierność kiełkowania nasion, a w fitotronie: zdolność, średni czas i równomierność wschodów.

Opis:
The effect of laser priming at different irradiation times on canola yield and its components under saline conditions were investigated. The results showed that laser priming had a positive effect on yield and its components and caused yield increase under saline conditions. Increase in salt levels had a negative and significant effect on seed yield, number of seeds per pod, number of pod per plant, pod length and plant height. The results showed that 45-min laser priming had the strongest effect on yield and yield components and reduced significantly the adverse effects of salinity.By contrast, laser radiation applied for 60 and 75 min, resulted in a dramatic decrease in yield and its components. Correlation coefficients between the attributes showed that canola yield had a positive and significant correlation with plant height, number of seeds, pod per main branch and lateral branches, length of pod and number of lateral branches. Effects of laser and salinity were significant on lateral branch pod length but not on main branch pods.
