Opis:
Transmission of the electric power is accompanied with generation of low –frequency electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic compatibility studies require that the fields from sources of electric power be well known. Unfortunately, many of these sources are not defined to the desired degree of accuracy. This applies e.g. to the case of the twisted-wire pair used in telephone communication; already practiced is twisting of insulated high-voltage three phase power cables and single-phase distribution cables as well. The paper presents a theoretical study of the calculation of magnetic fields in vicinity of conductors having helical structure. For the helical conductor with finite length the method is based on the Biot-Savart law. Since the lay-out of the cables is much more similar to a broken line than to strait line, in the paper the magnetic flux densities produced by helical conductor of complex geometry are also derived. The analytical formulas for calculating the 3D magnetic field can be used by a software tool to model the magnetic fields generated by e.g. twisted wires, helical coils, etc.

Single crystal $Y_3Fe_5O_{12}$ (YIG) film was grown onto (111) oriented gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate by the liquid phase epitaxy (PLD) technique. The X-ray diffraction measurements showed that epitaxial growth of the film along its (111) axis. The surface characteristic was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurement. The magnetic field sensor consisted of a rectangular shape with 5 mm wide, 15 mm long and 5 μm thick YIG film and a pair of identical 50 μm wide microstrip copper transducers elements separated by 6 mm. The filter was tested by measuring reflection $S_{11}$ characteristic at various bias magnetic fields. The results have showed that when the bias field increased from 0 to 2.5 kOe, the frequency value corresponding to $S_{11}$ maxima increased from 1 GHz to 9 GHz. This suggests that the wide range magnetic field sensing and the highly sensitive field sensing are simultaneously fulfilled with the YIG film.

In this work the 4-n-hexyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal was doped with differently shaped magnetite nanoparticles. The structural changes were observed by capacitance measurements. Influence of the shape of magnetic particles on magnetic Fréedericksz transition depends on the type of anchoring, which is characterized by the density of the anchoring energy and by the initial orientation between the liquid crystal molecules and the magnetic moment of the magnetic particles. It was observed that in the case of doping with spherical particles, the critical magnetic field is shifted to higher values with increase of volume concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles but decreases with increase of biasing voltage. In the case of doping with rod-like particles, the critical magnetic field is almost independent of the volume concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles.

A theoretical description is given for electronic properties of semiconductor quantum dots in a magnetic field. A two-electron model is applied for electrons in a cylindrical quantum dot with a parabolic confinement potential. The eigenvalue problem is solved by the variational method with the trial wave function proposed in the form of linear combination of S-type and P-type Gaussians. The energy levels of singlet and triplet states with arbitrary radial and magnetic quantum numbers have been calculated as a function of the applied magnetic field. The calculated cyclotron transition energies agree well with those measured for InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots. It is shown that the electron-electron interaction has a small influence on the transition energy.

Opis:
The spin dynamics of a layered magnetic insulator, KEr(MoO₄)₂, have been investigated in a magnetic field applied along the easy axis at temperatures where the magnetism is dominated by the occupation of a ground doublet. More specifically, the DC magnetization and AC susceptibility were studied in magnetic fields up to 5 T and at temperatures ranging from 1.8 to 20 K. The temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility suggests a slowing down of magnetic relaxation with increasing magnetic field. The magnetic field dependence of the AC susceptibility, studied at nominally 2 K, indicates the presence of low-field, intermediate-field, and high-field regimes characterized by the interplay of internal and external magnetic fields that give rise to different relaxation processes.

Opis:
Conductivity experiments were carried out on samples of semiinsulating GaAs at liquid helium temperature in magnetic field up to 6 T. During the measurements the samples were persistently illuminated with infrared light which allowed to populate with electrons a part of shallow donor and conduction band states. Current-voltage characteristics showed an abrupt jump of the current at a threshold electric field which is interpreted as a result of impact ionization of electrons bound on shallow donors and in the tail of the bottom of the conduction band. The jump of the current decreases as the magnetic field increases and disappears for a sufficiently high magnetic field B$\text{}_{0}$. The value of B$\text{}_{0}$ grows with growing light intensity. These results are explained by magnetic-field induced localization of electrons on long-range fluctuations of the electrostatic potential. The localization transition was confirmed by the current dependence on temperature measured at different magnetic fields. A peak on these curves was observed. Its position coincides with the temperature above which impact ionization is not observed. A possible mechanism explaining appearance of the peak is presented.

In this study, the variation of the magnetic flux distribution in a magnetised ferromagnetic material which has in homogeneity as a crack is studied. An orthogonal fluxgate magnetic field sensor was used in the inspection of cracks. In the fluxgate sensor, the sensing element $(Co_{0.94}Fe_{0.06})_{72.5}Si_{12.5}B_{15}$ amorphous ferromagnetic wire was placed inside a pickup coil winding with 50 μm copper wire and connected to a signal generator and the output from pick-up coil was detected using a lock-in amplifier. The surface profile of magnetic materials with a crack was obtained using a specially designed 3-dimensional moving system. A large decrease in the output voltage of the sensor was observed when the sensor was moved on the top of the crack, after the further movement of the sensor the output voltage came back to the previous value.

Five independent partial derivatives of the magnetic flux density vector are used for detecting ferromagnetic objects by use of vector gradiometers in algorithms of object locating and identifying. This method requires precise measurement of the magnetic flux density gradient (1). A gradiometer built of magnetometers with directional sensitivity characteristics has several parameters, called critical in this paper, that influence the measurement of partial derivatives in a significant way. The gradiometer critical parameters are: angle between the axis of magnetic sensors, offset, accuracy of measurements of separate sensors and the distance between them. The critical parameters values can be determined on a basis of measurements from formulas (4-8). Partial derivatives (1) are determined on a basis of measuring the difference quotient of the magnetic flux density. When choosing the distance sensors, their sensitivity and approximation of partial derivatives by difference quotients should be taken into account.

The rare earths elements (REE) belong to the group of critical metals and they are achieving more and more interest due to their special properties. However, there occur some problems connected with their production. The most difficult phase is separation of REE. It includes a necessity to intensify currently applied processes and looking for new solutions. The present work introduces an idea to use differences in physical properties of the REE ions to get them separated. In the experimental part of the work some efforts were undertaken to analyse results presenting changes of holmium ions concentration under an influence of the magnetic field gradient. There was determined the gradient of magnetic field and concentration of Ho3+ ions depending on initial concentration of the solution and time. A simulation of changing the concentration of holmium ions in the solution under an influence of the magnetic field gradient was performed to compare the mathematical model with the obtained results.

Different parameters like temperatures, pressures, speed, and vibrations are used in evaluation of technical state of turbojet engines. The article presents a pioneering idea to expand this set of parameters with measurements of distortions in magnetic field in a close vicinity of the engine to obtain more information about its state, which can be further used in its diagnostic and control systems. We believe that deviations in near magnetic field can hold valuable information, which can be used to predict malfunctions and evaluate the condition of the engine. The presented article shows pilot experimental results and gives answer to the basic hypothesis, if such measurements can be realized using a small turbojet engine, as well if there are significant changes in near magnetic field, which would warrant further research in the area.

We investigate the frustrated two-dimensional S = 1/2 next nearest neighbor anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice as described by the $J_{1a,b} - J_2$ model. We use spin-wave theory and exact diagonalization for finite tiles including a new method for the finite size scaling procedure. We present results obtained from the extension of our numerical method to finite magnetic fields as well as from spin-wave theory. The induced uniform and the staggered moment in the antiferromagnetically ordered phases in the presence of a magnetic field are calculated. They deviate strongly from classical behaviour depending on frustration ratio $J_2//J_{1a,b}$ and the $J_{1a,b}$ exchange anisotropy. The magnetization becomes strongly nonlinear and is suppressed from the classical value. This is due to enhanced quantum fluctuations already at moderate frustration.

To conceal the object, a special winding is placed inside its ferromagnetic shell, and its task is to eliminate the disturbances in the distribution of the Earth’s magnetic field. Such a procedure is called magnetic masking and the winding used for this purpose is called the masking winding. The possibility of building the masking windings for the ferromagnetic elliptical shell, situated in a transverse magnetic field respectively to its major axis, is also examined. The solution of Maxwell’s equations, which are describing the magnetic field distribution caused by the ferromagnetic shell presence in the Earth’s magnetic field, is found. Furthermore, the ability of selecting coils, which are eliminating the perturbations of the magnetic field outside the shell completely, is proven.

This paper presents an influence of three different magnetic fields stimulation systems for growing strawberry fruits: permanent magnetic field generated by neodymium magnets, ”high” strengths slow varying amplitudes magnetic fields generated by coreless solenoids supplied by autotransformer and low-frequency and low-amplitude sinusoidal magnetic fields generator created for this research. The system is controlled by computer and allows for an independent control of up to 10 induction coils inducing magnetic fields with amplitudes from 0.1μT to 150μT and frequencies from 0.1Hz to 100Hz. The proposed set-up was used during the growing seasons for strawberry plants stimulation. An increase in the extract level was observed in the case of the alternating magnetic field stimulation with the parameters: frequency – from 50Hz to 100Hz and amplitude – from 50μT to 100μT.

Radio frequency (RF) magnetoplasmic waves known as helicons will propagate in solid-state plasma of semiconductors when a strong magnetic field is applied. Helicons have an exact analogy with an electromagnetic whistler wave which is frequently propagated in the low density plasma of the Earth ionosphere. In our experiments the modulated magnetic field is being used for excitation of helicons. It is shown that in the case of pulse modulated field along with the RF helicon waves the transient cyclotron frequency oscillations exist in the semiconductor plasma. For observation of the cyclotron radiation frequency $ω_c$ the modulation depth about one percent is sufficient. The measurement of $ω_c$ provides an opportunity to determine the masses of electrons and holes in solid-state plasma of semiconductors. In already existing method the absorption of electromagnetic radiation on the cyclotron frequency is being used. For this case it is necessary to have an external infrared generator. In our method the cyclotron radiation is being generated by electrons (or holes) directly and additional external excitation is not needed.

The normal-state energy spectrum of the two-dimensional t-J model in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field B is investigated using the Mori projection operator technique. The density of states at the Fermi level as a function of 1/B reveals both high- and low-frequency oscillations. The high-frequency oscillations correspond to large Fermi surfaces, while the low-frequency components are related to van Hove singularities in the Landau subbands, which stem from their bending due to strong electron correlations. Frequencies of the low-frequency components are of the same order of magnitude as those observed in underdoped cuprates. These components become dominant if smoothing processes are involved. It is shown that despite increased distances between subbands the pseudogap affects only slightly the frequency of density of states oscillations.

The paper presents in a tutorial manner methods of the calculation of magnetic fields in vicinity of overhead electric power lines without and with passive mitigation loops. Exact and simplified methods of the determination of the magnetic field of a straight overhead conductor based on the Fourier transform technique are presented. The mitigation effects due to the passive loop are also investigated, whereas the mitigation loop can be treated as a rectangular loop (two-conductor closed mitigation loop) horizontal located under the power line. The decomposition of the magnetic fields in two components: magnetic field obtained in free space from the Biot-Savart law and the magnetic field produced by earth current shows that in practical cases the effects from earth currents can be neglected as compared with effects from line currents.

Investigating the possibility of masking of objects in a transverse magnetic field presented in this article will allow for a comprehensive assessment of a possibility of masking thin walled ferromagnetic objects of elongated ellipsoidal shape. The solution of Maxwell’s equations, which describe the magnetic field distribution caused by the ferromagnetic shell presence in the Earth’s magnetic field, are applied. Furthermore, the ability of selecting coils, which fully eliminate the perturbations of the magnetic field outside the shell are proven.

Transmission of the electric power is accompanied with generation of low - frequency electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic compatibility studies require that the fields from sources of electric power be well known. Many of these sources are not defined to the desired degree of accuracy. This applies e.g. to the case of helical current conductors of finite length. The paper presents an analytical-numerical method of the calculation of the 3D magnetic fields in vicinity of conductors having helical structure. The method is based on the Biot-Savart law and a software tool to model the magnetic fields generated by e.g. twisted wires, helical coils, etc can use the formulas obtained.

According to results, the mortality (%) of tested insects increased with increasing of MF time exposure. Trogoderma granarium was more resistant than T. casteneum in which mortality reached 56 and 75%, respectively 14 days after from exposure period. Without any negative effect on seeds germination (%) the MF was very effective in protecting stored wheat from insect infestation up to 8 months compared to non-magnetic seeds which became infested after 3 months of storage. Furthermore, the germination (%) was accelerated by 6 h compared to non-magnetic seeds. The MF level caused a slight increase in the percent of total carbohydrate, crude protein and ash while slightly decrease the percent of moisture, total fats and crude fiber.

The paper gives a theoretical analysis of the effect of an external constant magnetic field on the propagation of ultrasonic waves in electrically conducting liquids as well as the results of measurements carried out in mercury. The theoretical part is based on Euler's equation, the equation of continuity, the thermodynamical equation, and Maxwell,s equations. In the experimental part we propose and apply two methods for the measurement of the ultrasonic propagation velocity and its variations, as well as a pulse method perfected by the use of analog memory for the determination of the amplitude absorption coefficient. The correctness of the theoretical basis underlying the calculation of the small changes in propagation velocity induced by the magnetic field is confirmed by experiment. The amplitude absorption coefficient determined experimentally is considerably greater than that calculated theoretically for the medium studied.

We study thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) Falicov-Kimball model in the presence of external magnetic field perpendicular to the lattice. The field is taken into account by the Peierls substitution in the hopping term. We show how the Hofstadter butterfly is affected by electronic correlations. In the non-interacting case the field dependent energy spectrum forms the famous Hofstadter butterfly. Our results indicate that for arbitrary nonzero interaction strength and arbitrary magnetic field there is a gap in the energy spectrum at sufficiently low temperature. The gap vanishes with increase of temperature for weak coupling, however, it persists at high temperatures if the coupling is strong enough. Numerical results have been obtained with the help of Monte Carlo technique based on a modified Metropolis algorithm.

The aim of the study is to measure the influence of water on the form of drug in the magnetic field 1.5 Tesla. Material and methods. For this purpose, magnetic resonance imaging tests were performed to check the solubility of pure cytisine, Desmoxan tablets and Tabex capsules. Results. From a pharmacological point of view, both Desmoxan tablets and Tabex capsules should exert the same effect on the human body, this is due to the identical content of the active substance, in this case cytisine (1.5 mg). Conclusion. The differences in the results obtained may be related to additional excipients that contain medications, but it is believed that they should not have a negative impact on the action of the active substances.

We studied the spectral properties of the matrices describing multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves from randomly distributed point-like magneto-optically active scatterers under an external magnetic field B. We showed that the complex eigenvalues of these matrices exhibit some universal properties such as the self-averaging behavior of their real parts, as in the case of scatterers without magneto-optical activity. However, the presence of magneto-optically active scatterers is responsible for a striking particularity in the spectra of these matrices: the splitting of the values of the imaginary part of their eigenvalues. This splitting is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field and can be interpreted as a consequence of the Zeeman splitting of the energy levels of a single scatterer.

The authors of the presented paper deal with investigations concerning applications of the optical fiber sensor of the magnetic field in electric DC engines with permanent magnets. The aim of the sensor is to measure the state of magnetization of permanent magnets (basing on the measurements of magnetic field induction). The knowledge of the state of magnetization helps to decide whether permanent magnets need to be additionally magnetized in order to prevent damages of the whole engine. This can be done automatically, even when the engine is running. For the purpose the Faraday magnetooptic effect is used. The presented investigations concern an optical fiber sensor of the magnetic field provided with a glass rod characterized a high value of the Verdet constant as the sensing element. Thanks to the application of optical fibers the connection of the sensor head with the whole measuring system is constructed of insulating material without using of electrical connections.

The magnetotactic bacteria synthesize chains of nanosized magnetic particles that function as a compass needle to navigate in the direction of the earth's magnetic field. Magnetosomes are bacterial magnetic nanoparticles containing iron mineral crystals of magnetite or greigite, enveloped by a natural biological membrane. The objective of the work is to study the influence of magnetic field on rheology and acoustic properties of magnetosome suspension. Experimental results show a clear effect of the external magnetic field on the acoustic parameters such as velocity and attenuation of ultrasonic wave, and the viscosity of the suspension, arising from the biogenic magnetic particles aggregation.

Ferronematics are stable colloidal suspensions of magnetic particles in nematic liquid crystals. The presence of the magnetic particles enhances the magnetic susceptibility of ferronematics, in comparison with pure liquid crystals. In this work the thermotropic liquid crystal 4-(trans-4'-n-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanato-benzene (6CHBT) and 6CHBT dissolved in phenyl isothiocyanate were doped with spherical magnetic nanoparticles with aim to increase the sensitivity of the liquid crystal on an external magnetic field. The volume concentration of the magnetic particles was 5 × $10^{-4}$. The phase transition temperature from isotropic to nematic phase in the external magnetic field up to 12 T was monitored by precise capacitance measurements in the capacitance cells filled with nematic sample as well as with the prepared ferronematic sample. There was no observable shift in the transition temperature in the case of pure 6CHBT, 6CHBT doped with spherical particles and 6CHBT dissolved in phenyl isothiocyanate while in the case of 6CHBT dissolved in phenyl isothiocyanate doped with spherical magnetic particles the shift in the temperature about 9C of the phase transition from isotropic to droplet state at the external magnetic field 12 T was observed.

Stokes flow in a lid-driven cavity under the effect of an inclined magnetic field is studied. The radial basis function (RBF) approximation is employed to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations which include Navier-Stokes equations of fluid dynamics and Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetics through Ohm’s law with the Stokes approximation. Numerical results are obtained for the moderate Hartmann number (0 ≤ M ≤ 80) and different angles of a magnetic field (0 ≤ α ≤ π). It is found that the increase in the Hartmann number causes the development of new vortices under the main flow due to the impact of a magnetic field. However, the type of the inclination angle (acute or obtuse) determines the location of the vortices.

In Lithuanian and Polish electric power supply systems, the power transmission lines of 400 kV voltage represent one of the most potential sources of electric and magnetic fields generation. The 400 kV double-circuit overhead power transmission line and its surrounding environment were herby described and simulated through Finite Element Method using COMSOL Multiphysic software package. This study includes magnetic and electric field calculations. The study shows that the values of magnetic field strength and electric field strength present in the vicinity of a 400 kV overhead power transmission line tend to exceed limit values established in the Normative. Measurements are suggested to be taken for the purpose of finding maximum values of magnetic and electric field strength. To reduce these values, it is recommended to increase the height of supports, and restrict human personal and economic activities.

Influence of thickness and magnetic field on magnetic ordering temperatures is reported. The X-ray diffraction of Ho films confirmed their preferential crystal orientation and revealed diffraction peaks originating from the hcp structure of Ho and those from inessential holmium dihydride content. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy showed a very homogeneous distribution of holmium in thin films. Electrical resistance measurements on Ho films in the thickness range from 98 nm to 215 nm showed a "knee-like" resistance anomaly near the $T_N$. The $T_N$ value of these films decreased with decreasing film thickness. Magnetic field applied parallel to the thin film plane caused an increasing suppression of the $T_N$ value up to 5 K with increasing flux density value up to 5 T.

The stages in the shimming of the cyclotron sectors and an automatic system designed for magnetic measurements are described. The data on the magnetic field measurements in the median plane of the cyclotron are presented. A brief description of a computer simulation model and an algorithm of fitting the required sector profiles is presented, as well as the data on the computer simulation of magnetic field distributions. The data on the magnetic field measurements and those on the computer simulations are compared and analyzed. Possible reasons of differences between the measured and simulated data are discussed. The electrochemical deposition of Co-Ni coatings on gold-disc electrode with and without of constant magnetic field (CMF) has been investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The EDX results showed that CMF applied during the electrodeposition of Co-Ni coatings affects their composition. In particular, an increase by 17% in the content of cobalt in coating, i.e. the main component, with a simultaneous decrease of nickel content has been observed when magnetic induction B of 1200 mT was applied compare to this without of CMF. Moreover, it has been supposed that the increase of internal stresses in electrodeposited Co-Ni coatings under CMF can be attributed to a decrease in their thickness.

Physiotherapy with the use of pulsed magnetic fields is one of the methods of activating the processes of bone healing and regeneration. Exposing materials serving as membranes in guided bone regeneration (GBR) or guided tissue regeneration (GTR) to magnetic fields is an effective model that allows to monitor changes in the material under the influence of the magnetic field. Methods: Materials engineering methods were used to verify the extent of material degradation resulting from magnetic field exposure in an aqueous environment. Changes in surface morphology were observed under an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Changes in surface wettability were analysed in relation to the direct contact angle. Chemical structural changes were verified with the use of infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Results: The PCL-based membrane materials underwent relatively moderate surface degradation (altered contact angle, changes in surface morphology), but the absence of observable FTIR-ATR spectral shifts evidenced material stability under the influence of magnetic field. More extensive degradation processes were observed in the case of PLDLA-based materials, whose surface character changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. The spectra revealed enhanced intensity of the chain terminal groups, provided that modifiers (nanometric SiO2 and TCP (water reservoir)) were present in the polymer matrix. Conclusions: The extent degradation in the polymer membrane was primarily dependent on the presence of aqueous environment, while the influence of the magnetic field on the analysed membrane materials was negligible. Therefore, GBR/GTR membrane implants can be considered to remain stable during rehabilitation with the use of alternating magnetic field.

The VINCY Cyclotron is under construction at the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Laboratory of Physics, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. One of the most difficult problems to solve is the magnetic field shaping in the central region of the machine in a wide range of field levels. The latest measurements showed a very large magnetic field depression in the central region. The following shimming elements are used for the field shaping in the central region: a central plug and a spacer ring between the sectors and the median pole plate. These elements should both release enough vertical space for the inflector and the RF electrodes and produce a field bump in the very center of the machine. Concerning this region, one has to mention the following facts: sectors are absent or very reduced, and the small gap between the sectors restricts remarkably the possibilities of producing a field bump. Therefore, the design of these elements is the most critical one. Optimization of the central plug gap affects both the vertical sparking probability and the beam dynamics at higher harmonic modes. The redesign of the magnetic structure of the central region relied solely on the detailed 3-dimensional calculations to speed up the experimental shimming procedure. The desired calculated magnetic field shapes, which include the influence of the plug, have been produced and confirmed

The relaxation process, through which the inequilibrium state described by the Ising model reaches the equilibrium state, was proposed. The process is defined by the action of the transition matrix on the vector of state and the demand of its normalisation. It is assumed that in the state of inequilibrium the vector of state has the same functional dependence as the eigenvector of the transition matrix corresponding to the highest eigenvalue. Two cases are considered: when the cell under transformation is composed of one or two sites. The calculations were performed for a uniform initial state. For the two cases of one and two-site cells the modes of reaching the equilibrium state via magnetisation were compared. When the external magnetic field and temperature tend to zero, both magnetisation and the correlation function of the nearest neighbours show the critical slowing down phenomenon.

In previous wire explosion experiments significant rise of plasma expansion speed is registered when strong axial magnetic field (50 T) is applied. Sharp drop of media conductivity takes place in peripheral area because of density decrease. It is shown in this work that the conductivity drop is the main cause of plasma acceleration. During plasma expansion in axial field azimuthal current is induced. In plasma layer losing conductivity takes place azimuthal current energy release. As a result, pressure shock is formed and low-density external plasma layer is accelerated.

We study the problem of a thin film of neutral fermions in the presence of a magnetic field and scattering on random, uncorrelated irregularities at the boundaries of the film. An attractive interaction of s-wave type is assumed. We solve the equation for the energy gap and demonstrate its dependence on both the field and the scattering strength. The phase diagram is found. There exists a critical point (T$\text{}_{c}^{\star}$, H$\text{}_{c}^{\star}$). For temperatures below T$\text{}_{c}^{\star}$ the phase transition is of the first order and of the second order above it. As expected, the surface scattering significantly reduces the values of the critical field and temperature T$\text{}_{c}$. The critical point changes its position with increasing scattering rate but is not removed from the phase diagram until superfluidity is destroyed.

Magnetic field is usually generated using magnets realized as a set of simple coils. In general, those magnets generate magnetic field with nonzero components in all directions. Usually during the design process only one component of the magnetic field is taken into account, and in the optimization procedure the currents and positions of simple coils are found to minimize the error between the axial component of the magnetic field and the required magnetic field in the ROI. In this work, it is shown that if the high quality homogeneous magnetic field is generated then indeed one may neglect non-axial components. On the other hand, if the obtained magnetic field is not homogeneous either due to design requirements of too restrictive constrains, then all other components may severely deteriorate the quality of the magnetic field. In the second part of the paper, we show how to design a 3D transversal coil system to solve problems which are intractable in the 1D case.

At present, hydrides are considered as a one of the most interesting high-temperature superconductors with the classical electron-phonon pairing mechanism. In the present paper, we have analyzed the dependence of the thermodynamic critical magnetic field $(H_c)$ on the temperature for the chlorine halide superconductor. The calculations have been made in the framework of the Eliashberg formalism for the following pressure values: $p_{1}$=320 GPa and $p_{2}$=360 GPa. We have shown that $H_c$ increases strongly with the increase of the pressure: $[H_c(0)]_{p_{2}}$/$[H_c(0)]_{p_{1}}$= 1.43. Furthermore, the dimensionless ratio: $R_{H}$ ≡ $T_cC^{N}(T_c)$/$H_c^{2}(0)$, where $T_c$ and $C^{N}$ denote the critical temperature and the specific heat of the normal state, differs from the value predicted by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. In particular: $[R_{H}]_{p_{1}}$=0.166 and $[R_{H}]_{p_{2}}$=0.158.

Opis:
The out-of-equilibrium electron transport of carbon nanotube semiconducting quantum dot placed in a magnetic field is studied in the Kondo regime by means of the non-equilibrium Green functions. The equation of motion method is used. For parallel magnetic field the Kondo peak splits into four peaks, following the simultaneous splitting of the orbital and spin states. For perpendicular field orientation the triple peak structure of density of states is observed with the central peak corresponding to orbital Kondo effect and the satellites reflecting the spin and spin-orbital fluctuations.

The changes of dielectric parameters in oil-based ferrofluid have been measured in an external magnetic field. The frequency dependent real permittivity and the dissipation factor were measured within the frequency ranges from 1 mHz to 2 MHz by a capacitance method. These parameters have been studied in combined electric and magnetic field, when fields were parallel and perpendicular. The Cole-Cole model has been used to analyze measured data. When a magnetic field was applied, the interaction between the magnetic field and magnetic moments of nanoparticles led to the aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles to new structures - thick chains which had influence on the value of dielectric permittivity. At constant magnetic field the dependence of real permittivity and tanδ on angle between the electric and magnetic field (anisotropy) were measured, too. The various influences of magnetic field development on the investigated liquid are discussed.

Seed pre-sowing magnetic field treatment was reported to induce biochemical and physiological changes. In the present study, response surface methodology was used for deduction of optimal magnetic field doses. Improved growth and yield responses in the pea cultivar were achieved using a rotatable central composite design and multivariate data analysis. The growth parameters such as root and shoot fresh masses and lengths as well as yield were enhanced at a certain magnetic field level. The chlorophyll contents were also enhanced significantly vs. the control. The low magnetic field strength for longer duration of exposure/ high strength for shorter exposure were found to be optimal points for maximum responses in root fresh mass, chlorophyll ‘a’ contents, and green pod yield/plant, respectively and a similar trend was observed for other measured parameters. The results indicate that the magnetic field pre-sowing seed treatment can be used practically to enhance the growth and yield in pea cultivar and response surface methodology was found an efficient experimental tool for optimization of the treatment level to obtain maximum response of interest.

We have developed a comprehensive rate equations based model for calculating the optical gain in the active region of a quantum cascade laser in magnetic field perpendicular to the structure layers, which takes into account all the relevant scattering channels. The model is applied to gain-optimized quantum cascade laser active region, obtained by a systematic optimization procedure based on the use of genetic algorithm, which we have previously set up for designing novel structures and improving performance of existing ones. It has proven to be very efficient in generating optimal structures which emit radiation at specified wavelengths corresponding to absorption fingerprints of particular harmful pollutants found in the atmosphere. We also illustrate another interesting prospective application of quantum cascade laser-type structures: the design of metamaterials with tunable complex permittivity, based on amplification via intersubband transitions. In this case, the role of the magnetic field is to assist the attainment of sufficient optical gain (population inversion), necessary to effectively manipulate the permittivity and fulfill the conditions for negative refraction (left-handedness).

This paper describes the magnetic cooling device model designed and built at the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, which utilizes reciprocating motion of a magnetic field source and a cyclic flow of a coolant through regenerator. The regenerator made from gadolinum made it possible to obtain an adiabatic temperature change of 2.5 K at the magnetic field of 0.8 T. The magnetic field source was built using neodymium magnets according to our own technology. For the heat transfer, a liquid having the specific heat of about 4000 J/(kg K) has been applied. We have also developed and applied a special driving system enabling reciprocating motion of the magnetic field source and of the pistons in the hot and cold heat exchangers. The tests were made with this cooling model showing that it was possible to obtain, at the frequency of 0.5 Hz, the liquid temperature gradient of 4 K. The potential energy savings resulting from application of this device have been evaluated and compared with the literature data presenting a pre-industrial prototype of the magnetic refrigerator utilizing similar solutions to those applied in our cooling model.

In this study, non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluid flow equations for 2-D steady, incompressible, the natural convective heat transfer are solved numerically by pseudo time derivative. The stability properties of natural convective heat transfer in an enclosed cavity region heated from below under magnetic field effect are investigated depending on the Rayleigh and Chandrasekhar numbers. Stability properties are studied, in particular, for the Rayleigh number from 10[indeks górny]4 to 10[indeks górny]6 and for the Chandrasekhar number 3, 5 and 10. As a result, when Rayleigh number is bigger than 10[indeks górny]6 and Chandrasekhar number is bigger than 10, the instability occurs in the flow domain. The results obtained for natural convective heat transfer problem are shown in the figures for Newtonian and pseudoplastic fluids. Finally, the local Nusselt number is evaluated along the bottom wall.

We show how to compute the optical functions (the complex magneto-susceptibility, dielectric function, magneto-reflection and ellipsometric spectra) for semiconductor quantum disks exposed to a uniform magnetic field in the growth direction, including the excitonic effects. The optical response is calculated for an oblique incidence of the propagating electromagnetic wave and for input waves with different polarization. The method uses the microscopic calculation of nanostructure excitonic wave functions and energy levels, and the macroscopic real density matrix approach to compute the electromagnetic fields and susceptibilities. The electron-hole screened Coulomb potential is adapted and the valence band structure is taken into account in the cylindrical approximation, thus separating light- and heavy-hole motions. The novelty of our approach is that the solution is obtained in terms of known one-particle electron and hole eigenfunctions, since, in the considered nanostructure due to confinement effects accompanied by the e-h Coulomb interaction, the separation of the relative- and center-of-mass motion is not possible. We obtain both the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. The convergence of the proposed method is examined. We calculate the magnetooptical functions, including the optical Stokes parameters and ellipsometric functions for the case of oblique incidence. Numerical calculations were performed for InAs (disk)/ GaAs (barrier) disks. A good agreement with experiments was obtained.

Liquid crystals, due to their large dielectric anisotropy, respond very sensitively to application of an external electric field, whereas they are only weakly sensitive to the magnetic field. A possible way of improving that sensitivity is doping liquid crystals with magnetic nanoparticles. As a result, stable colloidal suspensions of liquid crystals with relatively low concentrations of magnetic nanoparticles (called ferronematics, ferrocholesterics, ferrosmectics, etc.) can be produced. We illustrate some examples of the influence of the magnetic field, as well as of a superposition of magnetic and electric fields on the structural transitions (e.g. on the Fréedericksz transition) in ferronematics based on the calamitic liquid crystal 4-(trans-4'-n-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT). It is shown that the samples respond to the applied magnetic field of low strength. The effects of the magnetic particles and magnetic field on the nematic to isotropic phase transition temperature are discussed as well.

The influence of magnetic field on confined exciton-polariton modes inside a semiconductor microcavity is discussed. The three-dimensional confinement for exciton-polaritons is achieved by the mesa structures confining the photonic part of polaritons. We observe a strong increase of the polariton emission intensity and we argue that this effect is due to the change of the oscillator strength of the excitonic component of polaritons and the change of the excitonic content in polariton state as the magnetic field increases.

Health care staff who operate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices are exposed to a static magnetic field of significant spatial heterogenity always produced by MRI magnets during the whole shift. They can also be exposed to pulses of a time-varying magnetic field (gradient field) present only during patients’ examinations. The level of the workers’ exposure depends both on the type of the magnet and on the ergonomic design of each MRI device. The paper presents methods used for measuring and assessing workers’ exposure. It also discusses the results of inspection measurements carried out next to approximately 20 MRI devices of approximately 0.2–2.0 T. The presented characteristic and overview of the variability of workers’ exposure to a variety of MRI devices supports the need for data on monitoring occupational exposure to MRI. International exposure assessment standards and guidelines (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection [ICNIRP], Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers [IEEE], American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists [ACGIH], European Commission directive), and those established in Poland are also compared.

The results of experimental investigation of detection properties of the planar microwave diodes of various configuration on DC magnetic field are presented in this paper. The detection of microwave radiation was measured at 51 GHz, 72 GHz and 144 GHz frequencies. The magnetic field was applied in plane and perpendicularly to the plane of the diodes. The experiment was performed at room temperature. Dependence of the detected voltage of the diodes on the magnetic field had asymmetric character with respect to the polarity of the magnetic field. This fact allowed us to suspect the magnetic rectification influencing the detected voltage. Therefore, average value of the detected voltage with respect to the polarity of the applied magnetic field gives its dependence on the applied magnetic field.

The article presents the new built in Poland helmet mounted cueing system NSC-1 Orion with a magnetic method, dedicated to the multi-purpose helicopters W-3PL Gluszec. This system uses the magnetic field generated by the system of three mutually orthogonal electric coils. The principle of operation of this system is described and the method of determining the angular position of the pilot's helmet relative to the helicopter's cabin using the reference magnetic field and the directional cosines matrix are discussed. Electrical flat coils, constructed in the Polish Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), generating a magnetic field with curved symmetry axis characteristics, causing errors in determining the angular position of the pilot's helmet are shown. As a way to minimize these errors, an original proprietary algorithm for correcting the negative impact of the magnetic field curvature generated by the on-board system has been presented. Mathematical relations describing the presented correction process as well as selected results of simulation and experimental investigations in the area of inaccuracy of the "before" and "after" systems of applying the developed algorithm were given. Inaccuracies determined from computer simulations of the developed mathematical relations were compared with experimental data from magnetic field measurements using the integrated three-axis sensor ADIS-16405, used in the laboratory of the AFIT Avionics Division for helmet control of the angular position of the moving observation and sighting head and reflector-search light.

Opis:
Tire, an element of wheel, is made in a sophisticated vulcanization process of many components and some of which such as: bead wire, belt and carcass exhibit ferromagnetic properties. Such components create variable in direction and intensity magnetic field, which expands around tire and the complete wheel. Since the layout of magnetic field is exceptional for every single wheel many of information might be obtained on the basis of it alteration. The reported since now application concentrates on rotational speed measurement, wheel rotations counting and therefore also vehicle linear speed and distance estimation. However up to the present the known solutions did not describe changes in magnetic field in case of damage induced by e.g. puncture caused by ferromagnetic elements. This paper’s aim is to test the thesis that it is possible to detect puncture in tire made by ferromagnetic element by using measurement and analysis of changes of magnetic flux density around tire. The tests were executed using original measuring device, designed especially for such experiments. It registers a magnetic profile, which consists of data series of magnetic flux density measured in this investigations 55 mm above tire’s tread and arranged along with rotation angle. Tire magnetic properties were assessed by using of circumferential magnetic profiles and parameters such as: minimum value (Mmin), maximum value (Mmax), peak to peak value (Mm), average value of ordinates of profile (Mb), skewness of ordinate distribution (Ms) and kurtosis of ordinate distribution (Mk). Magnetic profiles before after puncture were analysed as well as the parameters. Moreover differential signal caused by puncture were determined. It turned out that detected changes are directly related to tire damage and showing in rotation angle where puncture occurs.

Opis:
The main objective of these experiments was to study the oxygen mass transfer rate through the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) for an experimental set-up equipped with a rotating magnetic field (RMF) generator and various liquids. The experimental results indicated that kLa increased along the magnetic strength and the superficial gas velocity. Mathematical correlations defining the influence of the considered factors on kLa were proposed.

We have developed a probe of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnetometer for measurement of a fluctuation of an AVF cyclotron field. The stability of the magnetic field of the JAERI AVF cyclotron, measured with the NMR probe, was within 1 × 10-5. A field-measurement accuracy of the order of 1 × 10-6 was achieved using a set of field-compensation coils and optimizing the probe position to obtain enough homogeneity of the magnetic field around the probe for measuring the cyclotron field with a high gradient. To eliminate a major bottleneck in the field measurement inside the cyclotron, the probe was specially produced with the cable shielding against RF noises and proper materials applied.

The aim of the study was to present an experimental investigation of the influence of the RMF on mixing time. The obtained results suggest that the homogenization time for the tested experimental set-up depending on the frequency of the RMF can be worked out by means of the relationship between the dimensionless mixing time number and the Reynolds number. It was shown that the magnetic field can be applied successfully to mixing liquids.

Opis:
This study addresses the problem of magnetic field emission produced by the laptop computers. Although, the magnetic field is spread over the entire frequency spectrum, the most dangerous part of it to the laptop users is the frequency range from 50 to 500 Hz, commonly called the extremely low frequency magnetic field. In this frequency region the magnetic field is characterized by high peak values. To examine the influence of laptop’s magnetic field emission in the office, a specific experiment is proposed. It includes the measurement of the magnetic field at six laptop’s positions, which are in close contact to its user. The results obtained from ten different laptop computers show the extremely high emission at some positions, which are dependent on the power dissipation or bad ergonomics. Eventually, the experiment extracts these dangerous positions of magnetic field emission and suggests possible solutions.

The ultrasound velocity and attenuation are investigated in ferromagnets under an application of magnetic field. In the magnetic field six different characteristic regimes are distinguished instead of traditional two (hydrodynamic and critical) found for the case of zero magnetic field. The mean-field Landau-Khalatnikov theory as well as the scaling predictions are given for each regime. Various critical exponents are identified for these regions and compared with the ultrasonic data for MnP. The shift of the ultrasonic attenuation peak under the influence of magnetic field towards higher temperatures is discussed.

We compare the Fermi liquid (FL) and statistical spin liquid (SSL) representations of the electronic properties for strongly correlated systems. In particular, we discuss the entropy, as well as the magnetization as a function of band filling, temperature and magnetic field. These properties are quite different in the two (FL, SSL) states. Antiferromagnetic state disappears for a small number of holes in the doped Mott insulator.

The equation of motion for a charged particle moving in the n-dimensional constant magnetic field is obtained for any linear gauge and any metric tensor by generalization of Johnson and Lipmann's approach. It allows to consider the magnetic orbits in the n-dimensional space. It is shown that the movement of a particle can always be decomposed into a number of two-dimensional cyclotronic motions and a free particle part.

Opis:
Power lines or underground power cables generate electromagnetic interaction with other objects near to them. This study evaluates the magnetic field emitted by underground extra high voltage cables. The presented work aims to show a numerical simulation of the magnetic field of a buried 400 kV underground power line, which is used as a novel prototype in several countries at a short distance. The underground power cable study, in the presence of the current harmonics at different positions, with time variation by finite element resolution, using Comsol Multiphysics with Matlab software in two dimensions. The simulation results illustrate the magnetic flux density variation-in terms of amplitude and distribution as a function of different actual harmonics rates. The underground cable performance and magnetic field have affected by the harmonics effects. The maximum magnetic induction levels generated by significant harmonics are superior to the limits recommended by the international standard norms. In this paper, shielding has been used as an appropriate remedy to attenuate the magnetic field.

The case whereby the transmission coefficient through a barrier, sandwiched by semiconductor reservoirs, under bias is provided by a general formula involving the logarith micwave function derivative at the barrier entrance is now extended to include the influence of magnetic field perpendicular to the longitudinal barrier direction. Under the circumstances, theequation governing the logarithmic wave function derivative is appropriately modified via aneffective potential energy which takes account of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the procedurefor obtaining the transmission coefficient is applied to the case involving a smooth double, as wellas quadruple, barrier for which theI-V characteristic is obtained. The results show reduction incurrent with increase in the magnetic field, up to a certain value of bias. Furthermore, increasein temperature exhibits increase in current as well as movement of the current peaks in the I-V curves towards lower bias.

Opis:
The magnetic field dependence of the drag current induced by beams of acoustic phonons is studied in a 2D gas of carriers, formed in a heterostructure. This drag current is related to the velocity of the center of mass of the gas. The elimination of the degrees of freedom related to the relative motion of the carriers leads to a Langevin equation for the center-of-mass position vector. From this equation one can obtain an expression for the induced current density which depends on carrier density-density correlation functions. An explicit formula for the time-integrated current density is derived taking into account all intra and inter Landau level transitions. Corresponding numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental patterns.

Opis:
The paper presents the novel concept of the magnetoelectric sensor constructed using the amorphous glass ribbon. Its output characteristics (voltage pattern), conditions of work and experimental results are presented. The novel construction allows for minimizing the demagnetizing field in the core of the sensor and linearization of the characteristics between the magnetic field and obtained voltage. Conducted experiments were aimed at determining the sensor operation in the presence of the constant magnetic field (HDC). The main concern of the tests was to verify the linear dependency between the HDC value and the amplitude of the output voltage. Next, the computer model representing the sensor behavior in the constant magnetic field is described. The model implements the parameter identification task based on the regression algorithms. The presented work shows that the proposed device can be used to measure the weak magnetic field and the dependency between the output signal amplitudes and the constant component in the measured magnetic field is approximately linear. This enables measurements of even weak fields.

This paper is addressed to the membrane air separation i.e. the gas mixture of quite similar gases in many respects, except one: oxygen is paramagnetic whereas nitrogen is diamagnetic. This fact forms the basis for their separation. The numerical studies and theoretical predictions concerning the air membrane separation in the presence of a magnetic field are discussed. Some experimental data concerning the „magnetic membranes” i.e. ethylcellulose membranes with neodymium powder, are also presented.
