Factors that contribute to understanding humour involve cognition, the ability to identify a speaker’s intent to convey humour, and the desire to engage in social interaction. Humour can be found in all countries across the globe, though cultural and linguistic differences may influence what listeners consider humorous. Moreover, some listeners have difficulty processing or understanding humour. The article also outlines studies investigating humour understanding and appreciation in relation to autistic spectrum disorders.

This study will present a few examples of monomodal and multimodal humour in the translation of the film Le Petit Nicolas into Polish (Mikołajek). The objective of our research is to identify the selected difficulties in film translation that are caused by humour and the possible ways of solving them, taking into consideration that the audiovisual translation is situated on the border of interlingual and intersemiotic translation (Tomaszkiewicz 2006). Thus, we discuss the problem of the transfer of humour, keeping in mind its verbal but also non-verbal dimension (Kaindl 2004, Rębkowska 2016). As a result of our analysis, we can conclude that in audiovisual translation the visual layer has an impact, as it carries the information, even in the reception of the language-based humour. The analysis of three examples also shows that in their case the image reinforces the activation of humour; we discuss whether multimodality is applicable in language-based jokes, which are inherently monomodal.

There is an ample evidence supporting the benefits of instructional humour, among which increased attention and interest, information retention and learning speed, more productive learning environment, a more positive image of the instructor, more efficient acquisition of linguistic and cultural competencies, an increased conversational involvement, enhanced cultural awareness and more stimulated critical thinking. However, most of the research findings rely on what is termed appropriate humor such as puns, jokes, anecdotes and alike, while potentially offensive humour that relates to sexual, ethnic, religious, political identity is generally labeled inappropriate and advised to be avoided in the classroom environment. It is in this particular context that this study seeks to test the potential of such humour, sexual and ethnic in particular, to act as a tool of increasing cultural awareness and stimulate critical thinking among university students. To do so, the study relies on an experimental class design combining few in-class and extracurricular activities created by using sexual and ethnic humour samples.

Professional written academic genres are not typical sites of humour, especially in their final, published forms. In this paper, I argue that academic discourse as construed today not only does not preclude humour in written research genres but – in some text segments or in response to specific communicative needs – is perfectly compatible with it. In particular, I focus on these occurrences which engage the reader and contribute to the writer-reader rapport: humorous titles, humorous comments or asides, personal stories, and literary anecdotes. I also suggest that making university ESL/EFL students aware of the fact that “serious” writing tasks do offer some room for humour may draw their attention to the human face of academic writing, that is to the interactive, dialogic, and personal aspects of written academic communication.

This study examines the use of online humour in a subversive local community Facebook group set up in 2017 by disgruntled members banned from a similar group “in opposition to [the original group’s] arbitrarily-applied rules, [its] enforced happiness, and [its] suppression of any post that isn't about giving away lemons or asking to borrow small appliances”. The dissatisfaction with the guidelines and the administration of the original Facebook group provides rich material for humorous posts in the new group, many with varying degrees of aggression directed at the founder and certain members of the “Dark Side”, as the original group is frequently referred to.  This article will demonstrate how the use of humour in this new rival Facebook group is used for the purposes of inclusion and exclusion, and how it contributes to a sense of belonging in this online community of practice (Lave & Wenger 1991) created by a small group of self-declared dissidents. It will be shown how the humour shapes the identity of the group through the members’ shared ideologies and beliefs (Tanskanen 2018), and how the humorous messages intended to denigrate and belittle the “Dark Side” reinforce unity among the group members, since the feeling of superiority over those being ridiculed coexists with a feeling of belonging (Billig 2005). Fifteen single comments or multi-post threads were chosen for analysis. These appeared during the first twenty months of this rival group’s existence, and included primarily affiliative and/or aggressive humour (Meyer 2015) directed at the original group. The analysis was carried out using elements of computer-mediated discourse analysis (Herring 2004), and an insider participant-observer online ethnographic approach. The examples chosen illustrate how the humour is used to unite the members of this subversive group by dividing them from the original one, to create the joking culture (Fine and de Soucey 2005) of the new group, and in so doing, creates and sustains the members’ shared identity as irreverent breakaway troublemakers.

Liudprand of Cremona is one of the most interesting authors of the tenth century. He is well known for his description of the Byzantine court and also for his jokes in Antapodosis – a first chronicle of Europe. Based on these tales, he is treated by scholars as a prime example of medieval misogyny. Lately the more political view of these narrations emerged, but still women in Liudprand’s works are seen mainly as victims. This essay shows that this view is wrong and that there is much more to be found in the text. Through Liudprand’s jokes emerges a much more complicated view of the position and role of woman in the society. To see this, the stories have to be put in the context of the tenth-century society.

Humour in Pan Podstoli has not attracted much attention so far. Although it is not the most important element of this novel we can observe some interesting solutions in its functioning. Comical events result both from the actions of the narrator – who is one of the protagonists of the novel – and of Pan Podstoli himself. The most important comical elements in the novel are: anecdotes, jokes (also puns), comical scenes, comical characters, humorous observations. Generally, all these kinds of humour are used in the satirical function or in order to make the narration livelier. Irony deserves special attention. It comes from the main protagonist and results from his involvement in the problems that are talked about.

Jewish humour with a rich repertoire of forms is an integral part of Jewish culture. The article summarises the typical features of Jewish humour and presents an outline of its history from its beginning at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, through the times of immigrants to Palestine, from the first Aliyah (1882–1903), until the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, to the humour of modern Israel. The humour of Anna Fein – one of the important representatives of Russian-Israeli literature – is situated at the intersection of traditional Jewish humour, Israeli humour, and the mentality of a repatriate (the writer left Russia for Israel during the so-called Great Aliyah), creating an interesting Russian-Israeli version of Jewish humour. Fein’s humour fits in with the exemplary tone of archetypal Jewish humour. At the same time, referring not to the emotions, but to the recipient’s intellect, together with the assumption that humour must have pragmatic values, understood as the implementation of a utilitarian function, it brings the recipient closer to the postulates of Henri Bergson’s theory of laughter.

Zwrócono w nim uwagę zarówno na trudności przekładu związane z różnicami struktur językowych oraz tradycji kulturowych, jak i na możliwości kompensacji funkcjonalnej. Zadano także pytanie o rodzaj (typ) humoru w oryginale i tłumaczeniu.Szczególną uwagę poświęcono inwencji twórczej tłumacza, wprowadzającego do tekstu docelowego elementy komizmu nieobecne w oryginale i zastępującego realia źródłowe realiami osadzonymi w kulturze tłumaczenia. Odnotowano przy tym przypadki niezamierzonego komizmu wersji przekładowej. Zwrócono również uwagę na konieczność uwzględnienia różnic interpretacyjnych, związanych z przesunięciami w płaszczyźnie asocjacyjnej w tekście oryginału i przekładu.Przedstawiono schemat nakładania się na siebie interpretacji uczestników procesu przekładu z uwzględnieniem przesunięć, wynikających z innego widzenia świata.

The widespread notion of a unique national humour involves an impulse to apply the commonplace assumptions of national identity that demand uniqueness of identity, history, language and culture for a political society. What is deemed true and distinctive of the nation must be also be true and distinctive of its national humour, goes the thinking. However, such cultural exclusivity has not been reconciled with cultural exchanges between nations. Paradoxically, conceptions of national humour have been formulated in dynamic tension with such exchanges during the various phases of globalization that have taken place since the 19th century. The Americanisation of humour, in particular, has been an important component of such transmissions and resulted from the commercial popular culture dominated by America since the nineteenth century. Australia is a prime example examined here along with examples from Britain. To complicate matters of transmission, Americanisation sometimes arrived in Australia via Britain as well as directly from America itself. Australians and Britons periodically reacted against American culture, including humour, as a threat to national identity. But this was part of a dynamic tension played out between modern and traditional, imported and local in their selections and adaptations of humour imports from America. There is a huge and historic complexity of cultural anxiety and cultural transfer lying behind the apparent cultural comforts of belonging to a nation-state. Moreover, humour has played its part in the continual discursive recreation of the nation in the form of constant searches for the unique national humour of a people.

Historically a much greater range of styles of literary humour were to be found in Britain than in the United States because Britain was a much more hierarchical society with a divided elite and an aristocratic as well as a bourgeois aesthetic. In America there was a single dominant class, that of independent farmers and the businessmen and professional people of medium sized cities whose optimistic, egalitarian, moralistic, culture restricted the range of styles an aspiring American humorous writer could use. This restrictiveness remained long after American had become the world's leading, richest and most technologically advanced economy. British humour alone was able to use styles that valued detachment from conventional morality and also took inequality for granted and hence devised forms of aggressive mockery that could be directed downwards. British humour was also able to employ a greater reach of allusiveness, vocabulary and sophistication than was possible in America. It was the rise of Jewish humour in America from a new initially immigrant population that valued things of the intellect for their own sake and which had also mastered the arts of detachment that enabled American literary humour to achieve a comparable degree of variety and sophistication to that of Britain in the course of the twentieth century.

Given the marked presence of humour in many areas of thought and language, as well as in people’s social, emotional, and aesthetic experiences, it comes as no surprise that humour studies are considered an interesting interdiscipline worth studying. This paper is, therefore, an attempt at joining three academic fields, namely advertising discourse, Cultural Linguistics, and humour studies. The author will enquire into the operation of (debatable) humour applied in multimodal advertising discourse. She will make the cultural aspect the focus of attention in order to highlight the role of cross-cultural differences in the perception of humour. Based on her previous studies (Stwora 2020a, 2020b) on attitudinal responses to controversial humorous ads in English, she will join in an exploratory discussion with a view to showing the ways in which ad reception may be influenced by the culture-specific force of humour. Working towards a more comprehensive outlook on humour in use in the context of advertising discourse, the present paper will start with a few words on humour in general and on debatable humour in ads. Then, the cultural side of humour will be discussed. Finally, the author will discuss her research from the cultural standpoint.

The paper focuses on the literary riddle written in the sixteenth century by Jan Kochanowski (Fraszki III 78), concerning an animal with one eye that is shot at with arrows without arrowheads. The answer to the riddle is still debated by exegetic researchers. The author discusses the answers proposed so far (firearm, a homosexual’s anus, a female anus, an outhouse), starting with detailed lexical analysis of the epigram. Having discussed the poetics of the Old Polish ambiguous ribald riddle (suggesting indecent associations, but leading to an innocent answer) and the differences in the perception of the female body in the sixteenth century and today, the author shows that the audience of the riddle in the times of Kochanowski reached the conclusion that the answer was a female vagina. This trivial solution still seems to be the most probable answer.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of my article is to demonstrate how the terms of multimodality and intersubjectivity function within the areana of English humour, specifically in reference to a chosen sitcom. To this means I shall employ the cognitive apparatus of conceptual integration theory, aka blending. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The presented research problem centres around the notions of intersubjectivity, i.e. the human ability to display a shared perception of reality with regard to members of their own community, as well as multimodality, i.e. the use of more than one sense for the purpose of meaning rendition. Both phenomena are studied here with regard to the English humour, whose explanation is based on a cognitive linguistic method of blending. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Having explained the term ‘English humour’, I then clarify intersubjectivity, multimodality and cognitive integration, which will serve here as the tools for the purpose of my humour analysis. Therein I intend to show how they interlink and how their roles influence the comprehension of English humour. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result of this argumentation is constituted by the fact that intersubjectivity and multimodality together with blending can greatly enhance the comprehension of the amusing contents within English comedy. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The analysis confirms that conceptual integration theory, as enriched by intersubjectivity and multimodality, provides a humour researcher with a concrete apparatus for measuring humour effects. However, further research is advocated into the process of blending, as accompanied by intersubjectivity and multimodality, with recourse to English humour as well as other types of humour, e.g. the Polish comedy, in order to provide contrastive evidence for these tools and their usefulness or effectiveness.

Określeniu statusu dowcipów dialogowych jako wypowiedzi cytowanych oraz spojrzenie na tekst komiczny z perspektywy teorii tekstu umożliwiły wskazanie pewnych właściwości wypowiedzi komicznych i ich miejsca wśród innych form językowych. Dowcip dialogowy zdefiniowano jako bachtinowski genre mowy i przedstawiono z punktu widzenia danych aktów komunikacji językowej. Te ostatnie zbadano zarówno jako wypowiedzi dialogowe, jak i formy cytowane, rozważane jako całości. Stwierdzono nacechowanie wszystkich funkcji mowy z punktu widzenia komizmu badanych dowcipów. Scharakteryzowano nadawców i odbiorców, kod, przekaz, kontakt i kontekst w dwóch powyższych płaszczyznach. Przyjęcie podwójnej optyki badawczej okazało się konieczne także w opisie mechanizmów komizmu wykorzystującym podstawowy aparat pojęciowy pragmatyki językoznawczej. Wewnątrz dialogów wyróżniono: konkretne rodzaje implikacji lub presupozycji konwersacyjnych, kontrast implikacji, przeciwstawienie implikacji i presupozycji (konwersacyjnych lub konwencjonalnych), opozycję presupozycji, hiperbolizację presupozycji oraz kontrast implikacji lub presupozycji z sensem wypowiedzi. Wskazano również rodzaje naruszanych maksym konwersacyjnych w poszczególnych wypowiedziach dialogowych i w dowcipach jako formach cytowanych. Wykorzystywane są wszystkie maksymy, nie zawsze naraz w jednym dialogu, choć bywają i takie przykłady. Najczęściej nie respektuje się maksymy sposobu i ilości.
Determining dialogic jokes as quoted statements as well as looking at a comic text from the text theory perspective made it possible to point out certain features of humoristic statements and establish their position among other linguistic forms. A dialogic joke has been defined as Bakhtin’s speech genre and has been described from the point of view of given communicative speech acts. The latter have been analyzed as dialogic statements and quoted forms seen as wholes. From the point of view of the comic aspect of analyzed jokes all speech functions have been found marked. Senders, recipients, code, message, contact and context on the two above mentioned planes have been determined. Adopting a double research perspective turned out to be also necessary in describing mechanisms of humour using an essential term apparatus of pragmalinguistics. Concrete implication types or conversational presuppositions, implication contrast, implication and presupposition juxtaposition (both conventional and conversational), presupposition opposition, presupposition hyperbole, as well as implication or presupposition contrast with utterance meaning all have been found in dialogues. What has also been found were types of breaching conversational maxims in individual dialogic statements as well as in jokes treated as quoted statements. All maxims are used, though not all of them in each dialogue and every time, yet such examples can also be fund. The maxims that are breached most frequently are the Maxim of Manner and the Maxim of Quantity.

Юмор в сербских шуточых народных рассказах играет, несомненно, видную роль. Он выражает дух сербского народного человека, проявляя себя по-разному в виде комических эффектов. Чаще всего имеют место: оборот, неожиданность, розыгрыш, неожиданная комбинация, шарж, загадочное выражение, недоразумение, превосходство во лжи, параллелизм противоположностей, игра слов. К этим регулярным приемам можно добавить случаи, основанные на элементах бурлеска, разоблачения, травестии, парадокса. Встречаются также рассказы, в которых юмор строится на отсутствии главного («соли») или развязки. В случаях, когда шуточный рассказ значительно примыкает к анекдоту, наблюдается нисходящая линия развития комических эффектов в сербских шутливых народных рассказах. Таким образом, сербский шуточный народный рассказ по мере модернизации повествовательного материала в новых культурно-исторических условиях постепенно переходит из шуточного рассказа в анекдот, который, становясь новой разновидностью устной литературы, является также составной частью культуры речи и современного сербского народного человека. Несмотря на то, что сербский шуточный народный рассказ, так сказать, постепенно исчезает, юмор этих произведений сохраняет дух и представление о прежних временах, оставаясь близким современному читателю благодаря игре известного и неизвестного, победе остроумия над правилом, возможности столкнуться с действительностью и истиной о себе, посмеяться над нормами и правилами общества, разрушить в целом систему лжеценностей, приду- манных человеком для того, чтобы скрыть собственное бессилие. Тем не менее, юмор этот и в настоящее время находит место на досуге, при осуждении, осмеянии, создавая условия для эстетического переживания и эстетического наслаждения. В итоге он стал наследственным фактором сербского народного человека.

This study examined the perceived impact of formative assessment and humour on the learning experience and the development of graduate attributes of business undergraduate students. Data from 236 valid respondents of a questionnaire was analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling method. The conceptual framework for this study is based on Dewey’s theory of reflective thought and action and Ziv’s theory of the attention-gaining and holding power of humour. Findings indicate positive and significant roles played by formative assessment and humour in enhancing learning experience and student development. It was found that applied academic writing and poster presentations were student-centered learning methods that had a positive impact on learning experience and successfully supported differentiated learners. Humour was found to add value to students’ overall learning experience. The findings of this study will provide higher education institutions with a set of considerations for devising formative assessment strategies and practices that will successfully enhance students’ learning and the development of their competences.

Although research on humorous practices of Anglo-Australians has received much attention, the understanding of those practices by members of various multilingual communities in Australia has not been much studied. In this paper, we look at metapragmatic comments on concept familiarity in relation to conversational humour, particularly focusing on Mandarin Chinese speakers’ perceptions of conversational humour in Australian English. In order to explore what role ‘familiarity’ plays in (inter-)cultural conceptualisation of humour, we analyse interview data where speakers of Mandarin Chinese provide their metapragmatic comments on humorous exchanges among Australians. Drawing on approximately 8.2 hours of interview data elicited by a segment from the reality television gameshow Big Brother 2012, i.e., a teasing sequence between two acquainted persons, it is suggested that the concept of familiarity is the one most frequently alluded to in the theme of how participants ‘draw the boundary’ between intimates and acquaintances. From the analysis it emerged that Mandarin Chinese speakers’ evaluations of humorous exchanges in Australian English are driven by their culturally-informed perceptions that are conceptualised through various emic notions, e.g. guanxi (‘interpersonal relationship’), various labels for classifying different relational distance, and qiji (‘opportune moment’). The findings of this exploratory paper suggest that the role of ‘familiarity’ in relation to humour is crucial in the perception of appropriateness of humorous practices in interaction, especially across cultures.
