W artykule przeprowadzona została analiza części tomu reportażowego Pawła Kapusty „Pandemia” potraktowanej jako exemplum, czyli argument z przykładu. Tom został opublikowany jesienią 2020 roku, a znalazły się w nim między innymi świadectwa doświadczeń i przeżyć czterech pracownic systemu ochrony zdrowia (ratowniczki medycznej, pielęgniarek i diagnostyczki laboratoryjnej) z pierwszego miesiąca pandemii covid-19 w Polsce. Ich opowieści opisują sytuacje i stany odmienne od tych, które były deklarowane przez decydentów w głównonurtowym przekazie medialnym. Subnarracje wplecione w reportaż Kapusty zostały uznane z jednej strony za oddanie głosu „niesłyszalnym” i tym samym wypełnienie etosu reporterskiego, z drugiej – za exemplum zarówno dla tworzenia indywidualnych obrazów rzeczywistości przez potencjalnych czytelników, jak i głos o charakterze kontrargumentu w debacie publicznej.
The article analyzes a part of Paweł Kapusta's reportage volume "Pandemia" treated as an exemplum, that is an argument from an example. The volume was published in autumn 2020, and it included, among others, testimonials of experiences of four female health care system employees (paramedic, nurses and laboratory diagnostician) regarding the first month of the covid-19 pandemic in Poland. Their stories present different situations and states than those declared by decision-makers in the mainstream media coverage. The sub-narratives woven into the reportage of Kapusta were considered, on the one hand, for giving the floor to the "inaudible" and thus fulfilling the reporter's ethos, and on the other hand, as an exemplum for creating individual images of reality by potential readers, and a counter-argument in the public debate.

The motif of drowning the sacred chickens by P. Claudius Pulcher in 249 bc has been variously understood by modern scholars as either a historical fact or a later invention. T.P. Wiseman has gone so far as to call it “the hostile annalist’s masterpiece”. More important than its authenticity, however, seems to be the question: in what circumstances it had become a historical exemplum?

Starożytny Rzym należy do najważniejszych kulturowych źródeł twórczości C. Norwida. Jednym z symboli antycznej, pogańskiej Romy jest gladiator, który jednak nierzadko funkcjonuje też jako jej antyteza. Celem artykułu jest analiza znaczenia motywu gladiatora w pismach Norwida. W artykule omówione zostały wiersze Spowiedź oraz Spartakus, a także fragmenty innych tekstów, w których Norwid zamieścił parafrazy słynnego okrzyku, którym - według popularnego przekonania - gladiatorowie mieli pozdrawiać cesarza: Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant. Poeta postrzegał krwawe igrzyska gladiatorskie jako wyraz głębokiego zepsucia i zła Rzymu, a gladiatora zazwyczaj jako ich mimowolnego, heroicznego, osamotnionego aktora, świadomego degradacji moralnej swoich widzów. Figura gladiatora to w pismach Norwida zazwyczaj egzemplum wykorzystywane w refleksji nad takimi, aktualnymi dla autora zagadnieniami, jak rola i status poety w rzeczywistości dziewiętnastowiecznej, postawa chrześcijańska wobec uwarunkowań apostatycznej cywilizacji, a także kluczowa dla tych nawiązań problematyka prawdy. Pod postacią Norwidowego gladiatora kryją się najczęściej poeta, chrześcijanin i siłą rzeczy też sam Norwid, łączący dwa wymienione przymioty.
The ancient Rome belongs to the most important cultural sources of Norwid’s work. The aim of this article is to analyse the significance of the motif of gladiator in the writings of Norwid. The article examines poems Spowiedź [Confession] and Spartakus [Spartacus] and also fragments from other texts in which appear paraphrases of the well-known words that according to the popular opinions were used by gladiators to greet emperor: Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant. The poet regarded bloody Roman circus games as a sign of deep depravity of the ancient Rome and a gladiator as an involuntary, heroic and lonely actor of them, who was aware of the moral degradation of the spectators. The motif of gladiator often functions in the works by Norwid as an exemplum used by him to speak about such problems of his time as: the role and status of a poet in the 19th century, Christian attitude towards apostatic civilization and the key issue of the truth. Norwid’s gladiator is often a poet, Christian and simultaneously Norwid himself.

In this essay the author discusses two different visions of Lucretia (Lucrece). For Roman writers – Livy, Cicero, Valerius Maximus and Seneca – she was the ideal incarnation of ancient Roman virtues: pudicitia, castitas, virilis animus, virtus. Early Christian writers – Tertullian, Jerome, Augustine – call up Lucretia’s deed in order to prove various points argued in their works. Ethical value of her famous deed, undeniable for ancient Romans, they accept only in so far as their religion allows them to, considering Christian examples to be much nobler.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the persuasive functions of the Archangel Michael motif in the Letter of Jude 9 and examine how the laconic reference serves argumentation in the letter and how it affects the recipients. We used methods of interpretation in the field of socio-rhetoric according to the interpretation model of V. R. Robbins adapted to the needs of this study: rhetorical analysis, intertextual relations and analysis of the pivotal values of the first-century Mediterranean world. The analyzes lead to the conclusion that the condensed form of the allusion to the Archangel Michael motif makes it possible to refer to the crisis of the addressees simultaneously on many levels. It serves positive argumentation based on the ethos, uses the strength of the rich interpretation tradition of the motif and is the key to the proper implementation of the answer in the mechanism challenge-riposte and defining the threat to community identity.

The text comes from a silva rerum by Alexander Minor (ref. no. 691), probably written between 1664 and 1705, and held in the collection of the Baworowski Library (fond 4, section 1) at the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine.

The aim of the present article is to outline the role of Marcus Atilius Regulus, who appears as an exemplum of heroism in St Augustine’s De civitate Dei. He is presented against a background of Carthaginian double references (i.e., both to history and to Virgil’s Aeneid) and in the light of Augustine’s reflections on time, on the specificity and function of the past, and on the memory as expressed in his Confessiones.

Wolfgang von Rothkirch und Panthen had functions of a duke counselor and a starost on the court of Georg Rudolph, duke of Liegnitz and Brieg. Through the eyes of his contemporaries – what was mentioned in Simon Grunaeus’s, rector of St. Mary Church in Liegnitz, funeral sermon – he was seen both as a person of great knowledge and a magnanimous, honest and hard-working man. The epitaph devoted to Rothkirch, placed in a little village church in Makowice near Świdnica, with its form and ideological programme echoing hierogliphics fascination of those times, perfectly matched humanistic currents present at the duke court. The monument was created in ca. 1620 most probably by Georg Weber, one of the most innovative sculptors in the Liegnitz milieu. The dominant role of words as the main bearer of the dead’s praise, as well as the used emblems showing vanitative contents, which – with high probability – may be assumed as Simon Grunaeus’s work, accentuate the monument’s individual character, and also allow us to see Wolfgang von Rothkirch’s epitaph as an elite work, aimed at educated circles of recipients

The reading of the didactic works dedicated to the feminine public at the end of the Middle Ages teaches us that their authors treat the marriage as a natural vocation of the woman and although they are not indifferent to the religious dimension of the conjugal reality, it is the terrestrial and profane aspect that interests them more. So the works such as the Livre pour l'enseignement de ses filles of Geoffroy de La Tour Landry, Mesnagier de Paris and even Le Livre des Trois Vertus of Christine de Pizan appear in the form of textbooks in which the women can find any sort of rules, even practical advice on how to become a good wife and how to make a successful marriage. Among these books concerning the conjugal savoirfaire, the treaty of Philippe de Mézières Le Livre de la Vertu du sacrament de marriage et reconfort des dames mariés (1385-1389) occupies a very particular place. At first because the material sphere and everyday life of the life of a couple interest him only marginally, then because he turns all his attention to the essence of the marriage. Through his return in the spiritual conceptions of the marriage Philippe de Mézières anticipates his time. By putting in the heart of the marriage the love, by putting the love as the foundation of the marital union, he contributes to the advent of the modern couple which will triumph only after the Council of Thirty.

Opowieść dotąd była znana tylko z dwóch nowożytnych odpisów sporządzonych na podstawie zaginionego rękopisu. W artykule zaprezentowane są dwa średniowieczne rękopisy, które poświadczają funkcjonowanie tej opowieści w wiekach średnich: Paryż, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Latin 3239, i Londyn, British Library, Additional 26770, które prezentują tę opowieść w ramach szerszego cyklu o kaznodziei, któremu w modlitwie przeszkadzał osioł, jak też o zakonnicy, która dla obrony cnoty wyłupiła sobie oczy. Wszystkie trzy elementy są analizowane w artykule. Tekst zawiera aneks źródłowy.
The subject of the author’s research is the story of Robert of Arbrissel, founder of the Abbey of Fontevraud, who visited a brothel and converted the prostitutes working there. The story has been known only from two modern copies of a lost manuscript. The article presents two medieval manuscripts that attest that the story functioned in the Middle Ages: one, kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (MS Latin 3239), and the other, preserved in the British Library (MS Additional 26770). They present the tale as part of a broader cycle about a preacher who was hindered in his prayers by a donkey and a nun who plucked out her eyes to defend her virtue. The article analyses all three stories. The text includes a source appendix.

Opis:
Madelung deformity consists of excessive ulnar and palmar angulation of the distal radius. It may also involve the radiocapitellar joint and the sagittal bow of the radius. Commonly, the disease becomes clinically apparent in young adolescents with wrist deformity, pain and limited range of movement. There are multiple options for operative treatment. We retrospectively assessed a 14-year-old-girl treated in our department. The patient required treatment due to exacerbating pain in both wrists. The left hand underwent resection of the distal ulna; however, persistent pain led to the decision to perform the radio-lunate arthrodesis (RL). The right hand was treated according to the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure. Three years post-surgery, the patient was called for a follow-up examination. The assessment included measuring the range of motion using a goniometer, grip strength with a dynamometer, and evaluating follow-up wrist X-rays in lateral and posteroanterior views. The patient has also been evaluated using the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaires. Three years post-operation, the patient reported the absence of rest pain and occasional pain during loading. With the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure, a greater range of palmar flexion of the wrist and improved strength was achieved. The patient scored 5.83 points on the DASH scale, 9.5 points on the left hand, and 8.5 points on the right hand on the PRWE scale. In this patient’s case, better outcomes were achieved by employing the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure. The patient’s right-handedness may have influenced the results.
Zniekształcenie Madelunga obejmuje nadmierne pochylenie łokciowe i odchylenie dłoniowe powierzchni stawowej dalszej kości promieniowej, może również obejmować staw promieniowo-łokciowy dalszy i zagięcie trzonu kości promieniowej. Choroba najczęściej staje się klinicznie widoczna u młodych nastolatków objawiając się: zniekształceniem nadgarstka, bólem i ograniczeniem zakresu ruchu. Istnieje wiele opcji leczenia operacyjnego. Opisano retrospektywnie pacjentkę z obustronną deformacją Madelunga leczoną operacyjnie w wieku 14 lat. Chora wymagała leczenia z powodu nasilającego się bólu w obu nadgarstkach. Po stronie lewej wykonano resekcję głowy kości łokciowej, a następnie artrodezę promieniowo księżycowatą, a po stronie prawej operację metodą Sauvé-Kapandji. Ocena po 3 latach obejmowała pomiar zakresu ruchu za pomocą goniometru, siły chwytu przy użyciu dynamometru oraz ocenę radiologiczną nadgarstka w projekcjach bocznych i tylno-przednich. Przeprowadzono również ocenę za pomocą kwestionariuszy Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) i Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH). Trzy lata po operacji pacjentka nie zgłaszała bólu w spoczynku i tylko okazjonalny ból podczas przeciążania kończyn. Stwierdzono większą siłę oraz zakres zgięcia dłoniowego nadgarstka po stronie wykonanej procedury Sauvé-Kapandji. Chora uzyskała 5,83 punktów w skali DASH oraz 9,5 punktów w skali PRWE w ocenie lewej ręki i 8,5 punktu w ocenie ręki prawej. Lepsze wynik osiągnięto dzięki zastosowaniu procedury Sauvé-Kapandji. Potwierdzają to lepszy zakres ruchu, większa siła i mniejszy ból podczas obciążania kończyny. Praworęczność pacjenta mogła mieć wpływ na uzyskane wyniki.

Opis:
Vascular injuries of the upper extremity are usually associated with nerve damage. Neuropraxis or neurotmesis can cause atrophy of an entire group of muscles. We describe a unique case of a 24-year-old male with an isolated atrophy of the long head of triceps, resulting from a piercing arm injury in his childhood. Early post-operative examination showed acute radial palsy (due to a hematoma), which resolved over time with what seemed a full return to normal function. The patient engaged in bodybuilding 14 years post-trauma. Only after the patient had gained significant muscle mass did the difference in size between triceps brachii muscles become visible. We performed a series of imaging examinations to diagnose and determine the extent of the atrophy. USG and MRI have shown an atrophic long head of triceps brachii, of atypical presentation, intact muscular insertions and an unaffected main course of the radial nerve. Subsequently, the patient underwent a strength test to determine the level of strength deficit. We posit that the most likely aetiology for the atrophy is neurological, with the damage to the radial nerves branch to the long head of the triceps brachii resulting from either direct cutting or pressure exerted by the hematoma.
Urazy kończyny górnej w których doszło do uszkodzenia naczyń krwionośnych związane są zwykle także z uszkodzeniem struktur nerwowych. W przypadku neuropraksii lub neurotmezy może dojść do atrofii całych grup mięśniowych. Prezentujemy przypadek 24-letniego mężczyzny z izolowaną atrofią głowy długiej mięśnia trójgłowego ramienia, jako wynik urazu przeszywającego ramienia, którego doznał w dzieciństwie. We wczesnym okresie pooperacyjnym, w wyniku powstania krwiaka, doszło do przejściowego porażenia nerwu promieniowego, którego funkcja powróciła po czasie, nie dając innych objawów. Po 14 latach od urazu pacjent rozpoczął trening sportów sylwetkowych. Wraz ze zwiększeniem się masy mięśniowej pacjent zauważył znaczącą dysproporcję w średnicy oraz sile obu ramion. Przeprowadziliśmy badania obrazowe w celu ustalenia diagnozy oraz oceny rozległości atrofii. Badania USG oraz MRI wykazały atrofię głowy długiej mięśnia trójgłowego ramienia, o nietypowym obrazie, nieuszkodzone przyczepy mięśniowe oraz prawidłowy przebieg głównego pnia nerwu promieniowego. Pacjent dodatkowo przeszedł badanie siły mięśniowej obu ramion. Najbardziej prawdopodobną przyczyną atrofii było uszkodzenie gałęzi nerwu promieniowego odchodzącej do głowy długiej mięśnia trójgłowego ramienia wskutek bezpośredniego przecięcia podczas urazu lub jako następstwo ucisku przez krwiak.
