One of the main human goals is to achieve the state of happiness. Almost all people ask themselves the question of how to attain this goal. For thousands of years, philosophers and spiritual leaders and, nowadays, researchers representing various disciplines of social sciences, have been searching for the right answer to this question. One of the dilemmas intertwined in the debate about the essence of happiness relates to the tension expressed by the question “to be or to have”; the tension between the spiritual and the material world; between sacrum and profanum. Can accumulation of money and material possessions make us happy? Starting with the message passed on by a German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm in his essay “To Have or to Be” and the wisdom derived from the classic philosophical and religious works, I will attempt to define the relation between the state of happiness and the attachment to money and possessions or the attachment to social and transcendent values. This difficult, yet crucial, problem will be analyzed in the context of the current psychological knowledge related to the emotional and cognitive consequences of taking a materialistic approach to life. Erich Fromm and other thinkers who had lived hundreds of years before him, suggested that greed and pursuit of material possessions did not appease the human longing for happiness. The latest experimental research, conducted by psychologists, economists and scholars representing other disciplines of science, seem to strongly confirm these assumptions.

The article presents the problem of cheating in Polish schools. 1,070 students of high schools were examined. The aim of the research was to establish relationships between amotivation, external motivation, introjected motivation, motivation based on identification and internal one, and cheating, help to cheat and reluctance to help to cheat. The results show that amotivation, introjected and internal motivation are predictors of cheating. Only the external motivation turned out to be the predictor of help to cheat; on the basis of internal motivation it is possible to anticipate reluctance to help to cheat.

Since the dawn of time people have felt the need to protect their private lives. Contemporarily, the right to privacy remains one of the basic human rights. There are very few voices advocating that an individual shall be deprived of a possibility to keep any information about them in secrecy. Such views receive strong criticism as the majority of social groups and circles is likely to accept some constraints only due to the necessity to provide safety to communities. However, the issue whether other living creatures are entitled to be granted with the right to privacy does not remain a widely discussed matter. First signals pointing to the fact that functioning of animals may result in establishing some sorts of private spheres by them date back to as early as a few decades ago. They did not, however, bring about any wider interest whatsoever. Several years ago Brett Mills, Ph.D. raised the aforementioned question with regards to the manner in which the groups producing wildlife documentaries operate. His position stood up against strong opposition from numerous environments and backgrounds, including such ones acting in favour of animals. Animals’ right to privacy remains an interesting issue and ought to be analysed in a more profound manner. My article aims to present in detail the issue of animals’ right to privacy with special emphasis put over physical distance and the right to be let alone.

What does an actor do in a biographical film? This question may seem inane, or at least less than serious; however, the terms frequently used to describe and assess the actors work in general - to embody a character, to play them, to play a role - suggests the existence of a certain designatum, which is the point of reference for the role. In the case of a fictional story, we may ignore the semantic multivalence of such terms. In a biographical film, however, the existence of a real originator of the role gives additional, almost ontological meaning to phrases such as “embodying a character” or “playing a role”. In my reflections, I use as my starting point the assumption that the actors performance in a biographical film and the “conception of a character” result from two basic components: 1. Interpretation of the role - constituting a proposal to analyse the heros character. It is usually supposed to extract more profound meanings and senses out of the biography. To put it more simply, the interpretation of the role is supposed above all to help the viewer to answer the question of who the hero was (what they were like) and why? 2. Adaptation - this includes the physicality of the character: their appearance, body language, facial expressions, voice (the tone, modulation, accent, phrasing, dialect - if the authentic person used one, etc.) In my article I try to answer the questions: Where should we seek the essence of biographic acting? How can we avoid exaggeration and falsehood, which could kill the role?

One can note that the issue of children rights has always been topical and while there is still plenty of complex topics to be studied, the author yet invites to return to the basics of the child’s rights, and in particularly, to the need to protect the child’s identity as a legal value. The purpose of the article, therefore, is to clarify the meaning of the child’s right to identity enshrined in the international, and in particularly, the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, and according Latvian legislation. With the assistance of a descriptive method in conjunction with a historical method the article marks the historical events of the last quarter of the 20th century leading to formation and contemporary understanding of the right to identity. Historical remarks are followed with a smooth transition into the analysis of the international and Latvian legal framework. The used sources among others include a number of international, European and Latvian legal acts, as well as accessible interpretative manuals, monographs, comments, transcripts and other sources for a better understanding of the contents of the legislation. The named analysis has been performed with the use of legal comparative, systemic and analytical research methods.

While the existing literature focuses on analyzing individual hedges and comparing their use by native and non-native speakers, little attention has been paid to the teaching of conversational hedges. Research reveals that despite their pervasive nature in spoken discourse, hedges are regarded by teachers as ‘verbal garbage’ (Schiffrin 1987), not worthy of teaching. The aim of this study is to investigate college teachers’ perceptions of hedging devices in spoken discourse as well as their attitudes to the teaching of hedges. A questionnaire was administered to elicit the teachers’ responses. The results indicate that college teachers are aware of the significance and usefulness of hedges in spoken discourse; nevertheless, they have doubts about the value of teaching them. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the pedagogical implications of these findings.

This paper aims to briefly describe the two types of strategies (strategic orientations), namely: play-to-win (PTW) and play-not-to-lose (PNTL) as well as to propose some tools for their operationalization within the framework of public management by local governments at county level. The PTW strategies are related to offensive approaches and benefiting from emerging opportunities – they can be defined as “results oriented”. The PNTL, are defensive, based on the current (or even historical) standing of an organization – they can be defined as “survival oriented”. Some examples of possible applications and management tools of the PTW vs. PNTL thinking to the situation of local governments will are described. These tools may be helpful in identifying the specific approach in strategic thinking of local governments. The analysis of the two approaches is of particular importance for the measurement of intellectual capital at county level. The PTW vs. PNTL implies the type of investment decisions and budgetary spending policies as well as attitudes and behaviours promoted locally.

Make-To-Stock (MTS) and Make-To-Order (MTO) are the two traditional strategies in production management. In the case of the MTS there is a growing demand for a new approach, which is called Make-To-Availability (MTA) strategy. The paper characterizes and compares the MTS and MTA strategies. The comparative analysis based, among others, on computational experiments carried out in a computer program developed in Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Environment was presented. The models have been prepared for both strategies with the same assumptions: external conditions (market demand) and internal conditions (structure of the production process). The investigation of how the strategies respond to various scenarios of demand intensity was done. The simulation models were prepared and validated for the case of the production line in one of the industrial automation company. The research shows that the use of the MTA strategy in the majority of cases gives much better results than the use of the MTS strategy due to the minimization of storage costs and the costs of non-fulfillment of the customers’ demand. The directions for further research were also presented.

The author begins with noticing an apparent absence of the problem of faith in the twentieth-century philosophy and its surprising return at the end of this century, notably in Gianni Vattimo’s and Julia Kristeva’s works. By creating a kind of dialogue between Stein’s phenomenology and Kristeva’s psychoanalysis, the author analyses the concept of faith from those two apparently distinct perspectives. In the discussion of Stein’s attitude recalledare her personal experiences as a philosopher along with her claims on faith as a foundation of knowledge of God, supplied by love and acting. From Kristeva’s point of view, far from the former one, the need of faith is a result of specific ‘going beyond oneself’ that is necessary in a process of forming one’s personal identity. While Stein believes in God, Kristeva believes in man.

For years, publishing the results of archaeological studies has given rise to multiple controversies. A rapid growth of the number of examined sites and discovered monuments has long ago exceeded the intellectual productivity of researchers. Museum storerooms are brimming with piles of boxes containing invaluable monuments without any chances for publication. The only opportunity for archaeologists to quickly issue the research results is to change the organisation of investigations and the principles of conducting work, predominantly to modernise the methods of documentation. Suitably performed and skillfully illustrated work should become, immediately after its completion, material for pertinent publications. Such an attempt had been made two years ago in Gdańsk by a team from the Institute of Archaeology at Warsaw University, while examining the area of the Dominican Centre. The two volumes have become the source of enormous satisfaction among researchers dealing with the history of Gdańsk, although they were also criticised for workshop shortcomings. At the same time, the very sense of socalled rapid material publications was questioned. The purpose of the presented text is to defend the idea of rapid publication, with the initial premise being that the fundamental duty of every archaeologist completing his excavation work is to publish its outcome before he embarks upon successive research.

Purpose: This study is a contribution to the validation of the Motivation to Lead (MTL) scale proposed by Chan and Drasgow (2001) in order to measure three types of motivation to be a leader: affective, social-normative and calculative. This research examines the psychometrical properties of the MTL scale in the Estonian context. Methodology: The sample of 517 military and non-military individuals from the Estonian Defence Forces, Estonian Police and students from Tallinn University participated in the study. The original MTL scale was expanded by with the addition of ideological and patriotic dimensions proposed by Amit and colleagues (2007). The factorial structure of the MTL Scale was analysed by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (respectively N = 170 and N = 347). Findings: The results confirmed that both three- and five-component MTL scales are applicable in the Estonian context; the pool of 35 items was reduced into 25 items with good internal reliability. Moreover, the results showed correlations between leadership self-efficacy and MTL components, and differences between leaders’ and non-leaders’ MTL. The results indicate that the MTL scale can be a reliable and useful instrument to measure leadership motivation in the Estonian military context. Originality: This study is the first to adapt the MTL scale to the Estonian context. In addition, it examines the validity of ideological and patriotic MTL as part of the general MTL construct outside of the Israeli samples.

Ojciec powinien spotykać się z bojaźnią ze strony ludzi, ponieważ rozstrzyga o ostatecznym losie człowieka. Wzmianka o możliwości definitywnego odrzucenia przez Ojca zostaje złagodzona Jego troską i wiedzą o każdym szczególe życia człowieka (10, 28–31). Z faktu, że Bóg jest Ojcem, wynika powszechne braterstwo łączące uczniów, które nie ma nic wspólnego z jakąkolwiek formą zależności. Uczniowie są bowiem zależni jedynie od Ojca w niebie (23, 9).
The Father advocates the simple and humble. He reveals the bond between Him and the Son, and at the same time hides it from the pride of the scribes (11, 25–27). The Father should meet with a respectful fear of the people because He ultimately decides on the fate of man. The note of the possibility of definitive rejection by the Father is mitigated by His care for and knowledge of every detail of human life (10, 28–31). From the fact that God is the Father can be derived an apparent common brotherhood that connects disciples which has nothing to do with any form of dependency. The disciples are only dependent on the Father in heaven (23, 9).
