In these remarks I recall the attempts of pointing out the relations between philosophy and modernity in sciences in three distinctively differing point of view, that is the achievements of “the Enlightened Age” (in the sense of Ernst Cassirer), phenomenological philosophy (in the sense of Edmund Husserl) and the classicist conservatism (in the sense of Allan Bloom). In each of these cases an importance of those relations is being acknowledged. However it is not just differently evaluated and justified, but also the diagnoses and forecasts related to it look differently either.

Modernity in the West had, among other things, the effect of encouraging people to distance themselves, especially from the more cultivated classes, from ecclesiastical structures, at first, and then from the Christian religion itself. This distancing had incidence on individualism, which also led to a modern vision of man and society. This paper discusses the main philosophical, political and cultural motives that directly influenced, especially after the French Revolution, the accelerated process of secularization. This process led to the skeptical and post-metaphysical attitude of the post-modernity of the 20th century. Unlike previous ones, it was a century in which atheism was not an attitude of few individuals among the intellectuals but it spread also to large groups of citizens. However, since the last two decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st, some changes can be perceived that could indicate a return of interest towards religion in the West.

Purpose: Modernity consists of many confl icting aspects: It brings many empty promises, yet has resulted in new institutions that create bridges between the values and interests of millions of people who seek freedom, prosperity, quality of life, strengthened democracy and social justice. In this paper I attempt to a gain and loss account against modernity, because institutional rules are not only conducive to cooperative interactions, but to hostile interactions as well. People are not always guided by moral commitment, but rather more often driven by cold calculation or coercion. Methodology: Modernity has at least three defi nitions. The fi rst defi nition is based on ideas that took over the imagination of the era. The second defi nition is based on an analysis of the behavior of people who respond to reason as well as emotion and believe that they act more rationally than their ancestors or the traditional “others”. The third defi nition is the one closest to my heart, consisting of the use of institutional categories. Institutions offer practical ways of connecting ideas and people. The challenge for them is the result of deepening local and national interdependencies, but increasingly often also regional (e.g. European) and global. Interdependencies are the result of the scientifi c and technological revolution, global markets, global governance mechanisms, the emergence of new social forces and cultural confl icts (against the background of reconciling identity and differences). Conclusions: The most important task is to identify the mechanisms of complex systems so that people know how to act under conditions of uncertainty, risk and crisis. Hence, the expectations toward institutions often exceed their abilities. Even though new institutions are being created and old ones are being fixed, we are witnessing and participating in, institutional paralysis and the decay (e.g. corruption). In this situation, it is imperative not only to improve control methods (e.g. legal), but also to resort to normative systems (values and identity) and knowledge (competence and skills). The source of this paralysis is often man himself, convinced of his own maturity and equipped with all sorts of rights, but manipulated on a scale not yet seen in the past. We are experiencing our own struggle as to what roles are closest to us, e.g. consumer, investor, or citizen? Research Implications: Modernity is an emblematic, but confusing term. Therefore, the most important task is to identify the activities of complex systems, so that people know how to act under conditions of uncertainty, risk and crisis. People – agencies must operate in structures that defi ne the boundaries of their actions. The main task of social sciences is to identify the conditions for the construction of successful confi gurations of agencies and structures. Originality: Sometimes the “old” is better than the “new”, but to adopt this as a principle of life would be a mistake. It is better to think that the “new” is a metamorphosis of the “old”, sometimes expected, sometimes not. Based on the example of capitalism – fi rst commercial capitalism, then industrial capitalism, and today fi nancial capitalism – I demonstrate how the mechanisms of institutional morphogenesis work, with emphasis on structured cooperation and organized confl ict.

Do Marjorie Garber’s premises that Shakespeare makes modern culture and that modern culture makes Shakespeare apply to his reception in Asian contexts? Shakespeare’s Asianization, namely adaptation of certain Shakespeare elements into traditional forms of local cultures, seems to testify to his timelessness in timeliness. However, his statuses in modern Asia are much more complicated. The complexity lies not only in such a cross-cultural phenomenon as the Asianizing practice, but in the Shakespearization of Asia-the idealization of him as a modern cultural icon in a universalizing celebration of his authority in many sectors of modern Asian cultures. Yet, the very entities of Asia, Shakespeare, modernity, and tradition must be problematized before we approach such complexities. I ask questions about Shakespeare’s roles in Asian conceptions of modernity and about the relationship between his literary heritage and Asian traditions. To address these questions, I will discuss this timeliness in Asian cultures with a focus on Shakespeare adaptations in Asian forms, which showcase various indigenous approaches to his text-from the elitist legacy maintaining to the popularist re-imagining. Asian practices of doing Shakespeare have involved other issues. For instance, whether or not the colonial legacies and postcolonial re-inventions in the dissemination of his works in Asian cultures confirm or subvert the various myths about both the Bard and modernity in most time of the 20th century; in what ways Shakespeare has been used as at once a negotiating agent and negotiated subject in the processes of the prince’s translations and adaptations into Asian languages, costumes, landscapes, cultures and traditions.

Particularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century sensorial experiences changed at breakneck speed. Social and technological developments of modernity like the industrial revolution, rapid urban expansion, the advance of capitalism and the invention of new technologies transformed the field of the senses. Instead of attentiveness, distraction became prevalent. It is not only Baudelaire who addressed these transformations in his poems, but they can also be recognized in the works of novelist Gustave Flaubert and painter Edward Munch. By means of the work of William James, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Georg Simmel, the repercussions of this crisis of the senses for subjectivity will be discussed.

This paper is a short attempt at examining Tagore’s concept of modernity, by trying to understand what modernism and its relation to modernity means in this poet’s work. Considering the large range of his writings, essays and novels are selected according to what I consider to be the most relevant to the present investigation, favoring the more systematic writings among Tagore’’s novels and essays. Gora, however, another complex criticism of Nationalism, has not been included here, since its analysis would deserve a complete paper. It also does not focus on the introduction of European modernisms and European modernist expressions in India from a historical or aesthetic perspective. Rather, it underline a conceptual understanding through Tagore’s work of his own ideas, and the experience of modernism in India through his Indian writings. In so doing, I try to present the important differences of these concepts in an Indian colonial context, as well as the singularity of Tagore himself in his own context, hoping to contribute to an exploration of the poet’s talent and richness of expression and thinking.

The main focus of the current study is the role of periodicals in the emancipation of the woman in a modernizing Bulgarian society. From a social and political perspective, female virtues, rights and duties become an object of varied debates in Bulgaria at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. Women’s newspapers and magazines participate actively in these debates whilst familiarizing their female readers with the ideas and struggles of women in Western Europe, presenting diverse philosophical concepts, and discussing established cultural models. In these periodicals there appear materials which endeavour to cultivate models of emancipative behaviour; these publications include translations and authentic literature with a „feminine” axis. Female identity in this period gets formed within respective periodicals and the circles clinging to them, and it comes to represent a complex entity of, on the one hand, radical concepts stressing equality and female rights, and, on the other, conservative perceptions of the place of the woman in the modern household environment.

This paper explores how the language of tradition and modernity has been the dominant idiom that has sought to capture the “essence” of both the Indian nation and the Indian woman. The salience of this discourse demands a critical enquiry to understand how this overarching and hegemonic idiom been accepted as an unproblematic given. India is often seen as a land of contrasts where tradition and modernity coexist-where Indian women are often showcased as emblematic of this coexistence. The paper seeks to look into the complex processes that lie beneath this easy description. It seeks to do so primarily: (i) by presenting a more historicized account of India’s modernity from the vantage point of gender, offering a feminist critique of the public private divide which forms the theoretical hub of the modernization framework, and; (ii) by drawing attention to the centrality of gender in the nation state’s political, developmental and cultural policies and its more recent shifts in a contemporary globalizing India.

In the text I trace the philosophical outlines of the modern movement in architecture. The thesis I aim at defending posits that architectural modernism reflects the fortunate moment – and a turning point of sorts – in the history of the human species, where the human form reached its mature form of an autonomous individual, before its subsequent absorption and dissolution in the structures of the late or postmodern capitalism. The contemporary aesthetic critique of modern architecture with its “violence” and romantic spirit of lofty solitude, however reasonable, modest or realistic that critique may seem, is in fact part and parcel of a larger process of gradual selfeffacement of the human form from the most important stories taking place on the surface of the earth.

The work of Zygmunt Bauman is often classified by commentators and critics as either representing the thoughts of a proponent of postmodernism or as those of a valiant defender of a humanistic variant of Marxism. This article, however, focuses on a specific and often neglected leitmotif-sometimes hidden, sometimes explicit-running through Bauman’s work from the early years until the most recent publications, the utopian mentality. Bauman’s work is dissected along the lines of its contribution to utopian thought, however without it ever proposing a sketch of an ‘ideal society’ or ‘the common good’ as so many other utopian writers. Bauman is classified among the band of critical social thinkers-including the likes of Ernst Bloch and Leszek Kołakowski-for whom utopianism is an undying motif in human life, but who also, in varying degrees, fear the detrimental consequences of an actual implementation of Utopia. Moreover, they all, and especially Bauman, insist that the currently lived-through version of (in)human reality is not the only one possible and that we may still muster and imagine alternatives to the stubborn present.

The paper reveals contemporary developments in post-Soviet Islam that challenge the predominant juxtaposition of Islam against secularization and modernization. I argue that the question Gellner has posed: why is Islam so secularization-resistant, is based on inappropriate assumptions. As the anthropological data from field research among Muslims in post-Soviet regions show, there are trends and processes in contemporary Islam that do not fit into “Islam as a secularization-opposed force” thesis. When the problem is approached from a perspective of diversity inside a religious field (Bourdieu) and competing “discursive traditions” then it’s possible to identify religious groups that have positive attitudes towards secular institutions and modern solutions. Next, problems with Gellner’s vision of contemporary Islam are discussed, particularly concerning the shift in power relations between “folk” and “pure” (or “fundamentalist”) Islam. Finally, I argue that overcoming the notion of one homogeneous modernity enables us to understand the modernizing forces in Islam.

In this article, I analyze moral perceptions of modernity in Rio de Janeiro between the 1850s and 1860s. Against a long theoretical tradition in the Latin American social sciences that emphasizes nineteenth-century modernity in the region as an opaque process (a mere attempt at imitating the Western European “pure” model), I would like to follow another theoretical path; that is, my analysis focuses on tangible experiences of modernity during the apogee of the Brazilian Empire. This research looks to newspapers, schoolbooks, books, and speeches delivered by the cultural elite in the public sphere. I analyze how moral perceptions of urban life in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro can be articulated into a structure based on processes of education. In other words, beyond the materiality in urban space (public street lighting, oil and gas companies, urban cleanliness, public gardens, etc.), there is an implicit relationship between the inner problems (political turbulence, poverty, and moral management of the urban population) and the moral content of modernity (which can be understood in terms of structural prescriptions). These processes of education, instead of an institution-centered practice concentrated only on schools, elaborate a diffuse set of prescriptions whose nexus is constituted by the content of morality. The paper reflects on the conditions of production and reproduction of modernity in a peripheral area (former colonial space) in the nineteenth century.

The main task of the present article is to characterize the changing perspectives in the description and definition of modernism and modernity in a reciprocal relationship of these two categories. The creation of definitions is described here as a processes of fictionalization with a generational viewpoint of scholars. Moreover, the article indicates the difference between a nominal and a relational mode of defining and the question of institutionalization of knowledge within the framework of definition projects. Such research perspectives lead to the conclusion about dialogical and at the same time contradictory character of historical formations of phenomena to which the studied terms allude.

Opis:

In this article I examine the notion of “montage” in the contexts of both Muzeum Sztuki exhibition “Atlas of Modernity” and contemporary trends in aesthetics. In the exhibition folder there appears the word “montage” which describes a specific methodology of the exhibition. The way “montage” is being used metaphorically in the discourse of aesthetics is by no means new. Thus I decided to dig into the roots of the usage of this notion, which goes back to the beginning of 20th century when Aby Warburg established a new methodology in the visual studies, Walter Benjamin elaborated on his literary montage, and Sergey Eisenstein contributed to general theory of montage. Nevertheless, the very central figure is contemporary theorist Georges Didi-Huberman and his original reading of the above mentioned thinkers. Thus, using this constellation of names, I try to examine, how the notion deriving from cinematography happened to play such an important role in contemporary aesthetics.

Opis:

Neo-modernism, as both a philosophical and an architectural current, evolved as a critical response to postmodernism, the movement described by Agnes Heller as “neither conservative, nor revolutionary, nor progressive”. At the same time, neo-modernism adopted some post-modernist assumptions, resulting from the criticism of the modernist movement. Rem Koolhaas emphasized that although contemporary architecture is clearly inspired by modernist aesthetics, it has little in common with the two major attributes of the modern movement – opposition towards context and towards history. Thus, neo-modernism can be described as “unmodern modernity”. According to Jürgen Habermas, being modern is closely related to being free of external axioms. Neo-modernism appears rather to be another form of eclecticism or “a strategy without an aim”, than a new modern movement.
Neomodernizm, zarówno jako kierunek filozoficzny, jak i nurt w architekturze, zrodził się jako krytyczna odpowiedź na postmodernizm, zdefiniowany jako ruch nadmiernie pluralistyczny, który sam w sobie nie jest „ani konserwatywny, ani rewolucyjny, ani postępowy”. Jednocześnie przyjął niektóre z postmodernistycznych założeń wynikających bezpośrednio z krytyki ruchu nowoczesnego. Rem Koolhaas słusznie zwracał uwagę, że współcześni architekci chętnie sięgają ku modernistycznym wzorcom zapominając jednocześnie o dwóch immanentnych cechach ruchu nowoczesnego w architekturze – akonstektualności i ahistoryczności. Neomodernizm może zatem być określony mianem „nienowoczesnej nowoczesności”. Zgodnie z koncepcją Jurgena Habermasa, bycie nowoczesnym jest ściśle związane z odrzuceniem zewnętrznych pewników. Neomodernizm jawi się raczej jako kolejne oblicze eklektyzmu, „strategia bez ostatecznego celu”, niż nowy ruch nowoczesny.

The author of the article tries to reconstruct both the way of perceiving subjectivity in the works of Walter Benjamin and the ways in which the tension between identity and history is manifested in his writings. The article concentrates on the concept of shock, developed by the philosopher during reading Baudelaire and Kafka. With this concept, it is possible to describe the transition from the narrative conception of experience to “point experience” constituted by series of sudden unconnected impulses. The moment conducing to this transition was the I World War which for Benjamin – as well as for others significant thinkers of that time – constituted an important turning point.

Poetical project by Sorbian poet Róža Domašcyna fits into the category of „minor literature”, coined by  F.  Guattari  and  G.  Deleuze  in  1975.  Despite  its  inevitably  political,  ecological  and ideological local connotations, it is rooted in the experience of modernity, still unpopular among the contemporary Sorbian writers. Its main topics are: the devastation of Lusatian environment, erotic and cultural hybridity. Domašcyna uses the hybrid nature of Sorbian identity to create an post-modern subject, conscious of the non-transparent nature of language. The result is an original poetry, which suits the current comparative and postcolonial categories of interpretation.

Rzeczywistość w której żyjemy, określana jest przez Zygmunta Baumana płynną nowoczesnością. Jednym z wielu jej symptomów jest niestałość wszelkich struktur kulturowych, powstałych w dobie modernizmu jako fundamenty społeczeństwa. Ludzie żyjący w płynnej nowoczesności nieskorzy są do podejmowania wysiłku – poszukują rozwiązań wymagających minimalnej inwestycji własnych sił. Jeszcze lepiej, gdyby każde zadanie mogło być zabawą, aktywnością niezwykle ważną dla dziecka, ale niekoniecznie najistotniejszą dla osoby dorosłej. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, że żyjemy w czasie permanentnego karnawału, okresu zabawy i swawoli, w którym zawieszone zostały niektóre społeczne normy i zasady. Okres ten miał trwać jedynie chwilę, być ucieczką, odpoczynkiem od codziennego trudu. Przedłużył się jednak znacząco, i nikt nie chce już wracać do wcześniejszej, w porównaniu z nim ascetycznej rzeczywistości.
The reality in which we live is determined by Zygmunt Bauman as liquid modernity. One of many liquid modernity symptoms is instability of all cultural structures, which were the foundation of modern societies. People living in liquid modernity are trying to avoid any effort. They look for easy, undemanding solutions. Even better, if any task could be fun – a very important activity for the child, but not necessarily the most important for an adult. The main purpose of the paper is to reveal that we live in times of perpetual carnival, the period of fun and frolic, in which some social norms and rules are suspended. This period was to last only a moment, to be a refuge, rest from daily toil. However, significantly extended, and no one wants to go back to an earlier, compared with the ascetic reality.

Artykuł próbuje poddać analizie procesy związane (uwikłane) z metodologiczną, intelektualną i kulturową tradycją takich pojęć, jak magia i rewitalizacja, występujących w naukach społecznych w XXI wieku wraz z odwołaniem się do niektórych możliwych uwarunkowań. Wiele dyscyplin powinno zwrócić uwagę na procesy nazwane związane z modernizacją struktur społecznych poprzez wykorzystanie zawartych w artykule treści. W szczególności ekonomiczne i kulturowe determinanty wybranych problemów oraz kierunek transformacji, który przebiega w polskim demokratyczno-normatywnym porządku społeczeństwa postmonocentrycznego, jest krytykowany nie tylko przez autora, lecz również akademickich profesorów, wykładowców oraz studentów. Jednakże w końcu artykułu autor wyraża własny optymizm co do waloryzacji podnoszonych kwestii, jak i przemawia za stosowaniem problematyki magii rewitalizacji w Polsce oraz w postindustrialnym świecie.
The paper attempts to analyze the processes related to methodological, intellectual and cultural tradition of such notions as magic and revitalization occurring in social sciences in the XXI century with reference to some possible conditions. Many disciplines should pay attention to the processes connected with modernization of social structures through the use of the contents included in this article. In particular, economic and cultural determinants of selected issues and the direction of the transformation that occur in Polish democratic and normative order of post-monocentric society are criticized not only by the author but also university professors, lecturers and students. However, at the end of the paper, the author remains optimistic about the valorization of the issues raised above and the application of the magic of revitalization in Poland and in the postindustrial world.

The study examines how a regional university, having recently overseen a dramatic internationalization, deals with the consequences of COVID-19, and how the students - many of whom are international and coming from the global peripheries - experience the pandemic. The study is informed by the critical theory of late modernity and capitalism - especially the theory of uncertainty and risk (Beck, 1992; Beck, Giddens, & Lash 1994). It explores the power relations of the communicative dynamic between the administrators managing the crisis and the students perceiving and living it. It is an early-stage research report, published days after a pilot study was run. A survey among international students (including local, tuition-fee paying, and exchange students) was distributed to obtain initial responses. The analysis is complemented by insights based on close observation of the unfolding situation and analysis of the documents issued by the university. The findings explain the uncertainty experienced by international students, characteristic of many CE universities. The study covers the topics of attitudes towards epidemics, information imbalance, perception of security, and evaluation of the responses. The paper concludes with an urgent call to recently internationalized universities for a recognition of the complexity of students’ fears.

Quelquefois caricaturé par ses contemporains, Flaubert suscite les réactions dans l'outrance, lui qui ose dans sa Correspondance abonder dans la caricature selon ses humeurs et ses opinions en excellant dans l'hyperbole et l ’emphase. Un mot de son cru le résume : « hénaurrrme ». Au demeurant, ses personnages les plus mémorables sont des caricatures : de l'amour avec Emma, de la bêtise avec Bouvard et Pécuchet, de la bonté avec Félicité d'Un Cœur simple… Dans la fabrique flaubertienne, l'incarnation est intrinsèquement liée à la déformation, elle-même dégradée en parodie. Car la caricature chez Flaubert est partie prenante d'une pensée nihiliste : le romancier participe d'une déconstruction généralisée de la société bourgeoise par une caricature évidemment politique même si l'écrivain se défend d ’utiliser l'œuvre comme une tribune, au nom de l'autotélisme de l'art. Au fond, c'est la modernité de Flaubert qui justifie le goût et l'usage de la caricature.
Caricatured at times by his contemporaries, Flaubert provokes extreme reactions. In his Correspondence, he dares to present a plethora of caricatures which suit his moods and his opinions, excelling in hyperbole and emphasis. A word of his own summed it up: « hénaurrrme ». Besides, his most memorable characters are caricatures: Emma – of love, Bouvard and Pécuchet – of stupidity, Félicité of Un cœur simple – of kindness. In Flaubert’s factory, the incarnation is intrinsically linked to deformation, itself degraded into a parody. Because the caricature in Flaubert is part of a nihilistic thought: the novelist participates in a general deconstruction of bourgeois society by an obviously political caricature even if the writer refrains from using the work as a platform, in the name of “autotelism” of art. Basically, it is Flaubert’s modernity that justifies his taste and the use of caricature.

The topic of this review, Leonard F. Lisi’s book Marginal Modernity. The Aesthetics of Dependency from Kierkegaard to Joyce, is an ambitious attempt to reconstruct the cartography practiced by scholars of European modernism. Examining the northern periphery of the continent, Lisi tries to show how an aesthetics of dependency, formulated within the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, was disseminated in Western literature, chiefly through the reception of Henrik Ibsen’s plays, influencing the perception of art, humanity, and our place in the world in the works of such artists as Henry James, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Rainer Maria Rilke.

Tradycja i nowoczesność mogą być ułudą powstającą wtedy, gdy potrzebujemy odniesień usprawiedliwiających nasze usytuowanie się względem wielkich ruchów i tendencji architektonicznych i urbanistycznych. Wskazuje na to nieustanne przekraczanie granic czasowych przez grupy i jednostki nieszukające żadnych usprawiedliwień. Być może więc wszystko jest jednocześnie tradycją i nowoczesnością albo być może nie ma ani jednego, ani drugiego i uwolnieni do tego balastu powinniśmy cieszyć się twórczą wolnością.
Tradition and modernity can be an illusion arising when we need references justifying our location in relation to great architectural and urban movements and tendencies. This is proved by the border of time being constantly crossed by groups and individuals without seeking any justification. Perhaps, then, everything is both tradition and modernity, or maybe there is neither one nor the other and, released from this ballast, we should enjoy creative freedom.

Głównym wątkiem poruszanym w artykule będzie jednak ikona jako zjawisko estetyczne, religijne i metafizyczne, ujęte w perspektywie możliwych strategii recepcji nowoczesnej i współczesnej.

Analiza historyczno-literacka modernizacji egipskiej i konfliktu wokół niej w obszarze kultury Bliskiego Wschodu, w której Egipt odgrywa rolę wiodącą, polemiczna w stosunku do wybranych tez z dziedziny studiów postkolonialnych. Artykuł omawia, w jaki sposób mocarstwa kolonialne wykorzystywały w przeszłości „strategie modernizacyjne” i „antymodernizacyjne” do realizowania swoich interesów w regionie i argumentuje, że ten sam konflikt odtwarzany jest dziś za pomocą dyskursu islamofobii, gender i tzw. „cancel culture”.
Historical and literary analysis of the Egyptian modernization and the conflict it caused in the area of Middle Eastern culture where Egypt plays a leading role. The article questions selected claims from the field of postcolonial studies and discusses how the colonial powers used “modernist” and “anti-modernist strategies” in the Arab region for their own benefit. It argues that the same conflict is being recreated today through the discourses of Islamophobia, gender and so called “cancel culture”.

The text is devoted to material objects as they appear in selected works of two notable authors of Polish Romanticism – Adam Mickiewicz and Joachim Lelewel. Inspired by post-humanist thought, the article reviews the ambiguous currents where Romanticism intersects with modern age and ‘the century of lights’. On the one hand, both authors express their fascination with experimental thinking of the Enlightenment and the continuity of anthropocentrism. On the other, however, they notice the burden of emancipation of man, which results in his alienation from non-human realm, both contemporary and material.

W artykule omówiono wielowątkowy i wielowymiarowy proces przygotowania projektu budowlanego, który pociąga za sobą wprowadzenie nowej formy użytkowania do istniejących struktur urbanistycznych i architektonicznych o wartości historycznej. Przeprowadzono badania dotyczące uwarunkowań formalnych i przestrzennych, związanych z prawem miejscowym w wybranych krajach europejskich. Badania wykazały, że ścisłe i dokładne, a jednocześnie powszechnie zrozumiałe zapisy prawa miejscowego, dotyczącego planowanej zabudowy na terenach objętych ochroną konserwatorską, sprzyjają klimatowi akceptacji społecznej i wytworzeniu przychylnej atmosfery dla - czasami - znacznych ograniczeń i zakazów.
Thisarticle discusses the multi-threaded and multi-dimensional process of preparing a technicaldesigns that lead to the introduction of new forms of use into existing urban and architectural structures of high historical value. It covers research concerning formal and spatial determinants, associated with local law in selected European countries. Its results point to concise, precise and easily understandable provisions in terms of local law concerning planned development in areas under heritage conservation, which is conducive to a climate of social acceptance of constraints and prohibitions that - some - may consider significant.

This paper discusses gardening as a practice that may be useful in reconsidering how landscape boundaries can be experienced. The assumption is that one should think of landscapes as “entities” which are material, but at the same time may be said to exist only insofar as they are experienced by humans. As such, they are always bounded. In order to show how gardening may be helpful in shaping the boundaries of landscapes two approaches to gardening are discussed: one treats gardening as a model of creating order and eliminating all that which is seen as alien to it (Zygmunt Bauman), the other – claims that gardening requires respecting nature (Gilles Clément).

Artykuł poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie o psychologiczne konsekwencje i operacyjne korzyści afirmatywnej akceptacji nowoczesności przez Stanisława Brzozowskiego w kontekście jego sporu z tradycyjnie pojmowaną polskością. Brzozowskiego metoda odwołania się do pism polskiego romantyzmu (Filozofia romantyzmu polskiego) została zilustrowana na podstawie przykładów zaczerpniętych z publicystyki (Kultura i życie), filozofii (Idee), powieści (Płomienie, Sam wśród ludzi), a także wspomnień (Pamiętnik).
The paper explores the following question: what were the psychological consequences and operational benefits of the affirmative acceptance of modernity by Stanisław Brzozowski in the context of his dispute with traditional Polishness? Brzozowski’s methods of reference towards Polish Romanticism writings (Filozofia romantyzmu polskiego) have been illustrated on the basis of the examples drawn from his journalistic (Kultura i życie), philosophical (Idee), novel (Płomienie, Sam wśród ludzi), and reminiscent (Pamiętnik) texts.

In this piece, the authors detect and delineate an often neglected core concern within the sociology of Zygmunt Bauman-social suffering. They trace this concern with suffering from the early year writing within a Marxist framework focusing on the working class through middle periods concerned with the Holocaust, Jews, strangers and the Other to the later years and the preoccupation with the victims of consumerism. The authors document how social suffering has remained a significant leitmotif in Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology but suggest how his writings on misery and suffering paradoxically point to a world of human possibility and responsibility.

The article discusses the transformations of the idea of park in modernity. In the Age of Enlightenment Europe replaced the white of medieval cathedrals with the green of parks. A man, like Candide from Voltaire’s satire, started to “cultivate his garden,” changing private parks in public spaces. As a consequence of that process the idea of park as a place where you could experience beauty and pleasure completely “vanished”. Urban green spaces started to be determined by an efficacy parameter – which can be witnessed in Le Corbusier’s or Ebenezer Howard’s projects – thus opening the way for transforming former landscape parks into modern places of consumption: commercial parks and amusement parks.

Media jako jedna z emanacji nowych technologii informacyjnych silnie oddziałują na proces kształtowania tożsamości jednostki, umożliwiając człowiekowi tworzenie, wybór i ocenę wzorców społecznych oraz kulturowych. W wyniku postępującej konwergencji i mediatyzacji dotychczas stabilne wartości ulegają w nich “upłynnieniu”, a kategorie wspólnotowe są zastępowane kategoriami osobniczymi. Jednym z przykładów tych przeobrażeń są zmiany w sposobie postrzegania prywatności. Ten trwały, pomimo własnej dyskursywności, konstrukt w warunkach nowomedialnego ekosystemu staje się podatny na zmiany i, jak ujmuje do Zygmunt Bauman, “momentalny”. Celem tego artykułu jest uchwycenie przesunięć w obrębie dychotomicznych relacji kształtujących znaczenie prywatności, których przyczyną jest binarna struktura mediów zorientowana na zaspakajanie jednostkowych potrzeb. Na podstawie analizy definiujących prywatność w mediach bipolarnych opozycji prywatne – publiczne, autentyczne – intencjonalne, istotne – nieistotne oraz dozwolone – niedozwolone ujawniona zostaje labilna, symulakryczna natura tej wartości.
Mass Media, as one of the emanations of new information technologies, strongly affect the process of shaping individual identity, enabling creation, selection and evaluation of social and cultural patterns. As a result of progressing convergence and mediatisation, hitherto stable values have been “liquefied”, and community categories have been replaced by individual ones. One example of these transformations are changes in the perception of privacy. Under the conditions of the new media ecosystem, this enduring construct, despite its own discursiveness, becomes susceptible to changes and, as Zygmunt Bauman puts it, “momentary”. The purpose of this article is to capture the shifts within the dichotomous relationships that shape the meaning of privacy, which are caused by the binary structure of the media focused on satisfying individual needs. Based on the analysis of privacy in the media, defined through bipolar oppositions of private–public, authentic–intentional, relevant–irrelevant and allowed–illegitimate, the labile and simulacratic nature of privacy is revealed.

Doświadczenie zmiany wpisane jest w życie społeczne. Współcześnie, na skutek zmian cywilizacyjnych, zwłaszcza związanych z rozszerzeniem pola komunikacji przez rozwój interentu i mediów społecznościowych, zmiany te wydają się szczególnie dynamiczne. Przedmiotem wstępu jest podkreślenie tego faktu oraz zachęta do podjęcia dyskusji na temat siły i jakości doświadczenia zmiany, zwłaszcza w perspektywie pokoleniowej. W tym kontekście zarysowano temat pokolenia i postawiono pytanie, w jakim stopniu jest to koncepcja wciąż nośna, a w jakim współcześnie nadużywana. Wstęp zawiera również uzasadnienie tematyki zebranych w tomie tekstów.
The experience of change is inscribed in social life. Nowadays, as a result of civilizational transformations, especially those related to the expansion of the sphere of communication due to development of the Internet and social media, these changes seem to be particularly dynamic. The aim of the Introduction from the Editor is to highlight this fact and to encourage a discussion on the strength and quality of the experience of change, especially in the generational perspective. In this context, the theme of generation is outlined and the question is raised to what extent this is still a viable concept and whether it is being misused today. The introduction also includes a justification of the subject matter of the texts collected in the volume.

Opis:

The main aim of this paper is to present the results of a questionnaire study on the everyday functioning of a group of literary translators within the Polish publishing industry. Building on Zygmunt Bauman’s idea of liquid modernity, the author of the study makes an attempt to demonstrate that the new reality of the translation industry leads to the emergence of a new style of communication within the publishing industry and of a new characterisation of the professional literary translator. The author will also try to show a translators’ status in the contemporary cultural and social agenda of the 21st century.

Nawiązując do teorii Hansa Ulricha Gumbrechta, Brunona Latoura i Nurit Bird-David, autorka próbuje dowieść, że poezji Piotra Szewca towarzyszy koncepcja kwestionująca logikę współczesnego świata oparta na postępie technicznym i wyizolowanym, egocentrycznym podmiocie. Wspomniana koncepcja to ontologia nienowoczesności. Bezpośrednią inspiracją dla niej pozostaje pojęcie nienowoczesności (anowoczesności) Latoura uzupełnione o refleksję nad nowym animizmem Bird-David. Analiza obejmuje cztery tomy poetyckie, wydane w latach 2006–2017, oraz wybór wierszy Szewca z 2019 roku.
Referring to the theories of Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Bruno Latour and Nurit Bird-David, the author attempts to prove that Piotr Szewc’s poetry is accompanied by a concept that questions the logic of the modern world based on technical progress and an isolated, egocentric subject. The aforementioned concept is an ontology of the non-modern. It is directly inspired by Latour’s concept of nonmodernity (amodernity), supported by a reflection on the new animism of Bird-David. The analysis includes four poetry volumes, published between 2006 and 2017, and a selection of poems by Szewc from 2019.

In the article enterprise acting in the business of processing plastics was researched. In the enterprise is realizes mainly mass production. The main factor that decides about the reliability of applied technologies there are used machines. As a result of analysis a modernity level of sub-assemblies for two machines was determined (injections moulding machine and extrusion machine). Analysis of the machines effectiveness based on chosen TPM coefficients was also undertaken. It allowed the assessment of the working time of these machines.

Artykuł dotyczy sporów pokolenia Norwida i Baudelaire’a z romantyzmem, które traktuję jako kontynuację polemik wewnątrzromantycznych. Jego celem jest prezentacja sposobów określenia się obu poetów wobec paradygmatu romantycznego ustanowionego przez „wielkoludów”: Mickiewicza i Hugo. Zaproponowana tu analiza komparatystyczna eksponuje nie tylko problemowy aspekt sporu, ale także dążenie do realizacji konkretnego, odmiennego od romantycznego modelu poezji. W przypadku Norwida i Baudelaire’a mamy wszak do czynienia ze znakomitymi poetami zakorzenionymi mocno w romantyzmie, z niego czerpiącymi, ale proponującymi – i to bardziej w praktyce niż w teorii – własną ścieżkę nowoczesnej poezji. Skupię się na wczesnych utworach pisarzy: Fanfarlo Baudelaire’a z jednej i wczesnych fantazjach i dramatach Norwida (Marzenie, Chwila myśli, Wieczór w Pustkach, Noc tysiączna druga...) z drugiej strony. Ambiwalentny stosunek obu pisarzy do romantyzmu – „twórcza zdrada”, zakładająca zarazem kontynuację i zerwanie ujawnia się w kreacji bohaterów – jeszcze romantycznych, ale poddających romantyczny idealizm, wyobraźnię, marzycielstwo wyraźnej krytyce. Ta krytyka ze względu na stygmantyzację romantyzmem staje się także samokrytyką.
The subject of the paper is a dispute of the Norwid’s and Baudelaire’s generation over romanticism, a dispute treated as a continuation of intro-romantic polemics. The aim of this comparative analysis is to present the ways of defining poets relative to romantic paradigm established by the “great men” (Mickiewicz, Hugo). This ways are shown primarily in literary texts – and not only through problematic debate, but also through the realization of a concrete, different from the romantic model of poetry. In the case of Norwid and Baudelaire we are dealing with great poets deeply rooted in Romanticism, who derive from this tradition, but proposing – and more in practice than in theory – their own path of modern lyricism. are focuses on early works: Baudelaire Fanfarlo on the one hand and early Norwid fantasies and dramas (Marzenie – Dream, Chwila myśli – Moment of thought, Wieczór w Pustkach – Evening in the Void, Noc tysiączna druga – Second Thousandth Night...) on the other hand. The ambivalent attitude of both writers to romanticism – “creative betrayal,” which assumes continuity and rupture at the same time, is revealed in the heroes’ creations – yet romantic, but criticizing romantic idealism, the fantasy, dreams. This criticism – due to the “stigmatization by romanticism” also becomes self-criticism.

The aim of this paper is to confront two highly differentiated accounts of transformations of contemporary intimacy. The first account, represented mainly by Anthony Giddens and Brian McNair, concentrates on the processes of democratization and emancipation; simply speaking, this approach suggests that modern intimacy contains higher amount of freedom than the pre-modern one. The second account underlines significance of processes of commercialization and rationalization of intimacy; according to this approach intimacy becomes more and more dependent to the capitalistic market. This point of view is represented by social scientists such as Ulrich Beck, Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim, Eva Illouz and Arlie Russell Hochschild. The aim of the article is to analyze the abovementioned accounts not as opposite, but as complementary perspectives, which enable one to perceive the highly ambivalent character of modernization of intimacy and modernization in general.

Opis:

The relationship between Islam and Modernity is often explained in antagonistic terms. On the one hand, because Islam is a holistic system, where the political and religious spheres remain connected, resisting a modern definition of “religion”. On the other, because Modernity has been associated with the evolution of the liberal State and democracy, whose bases are deeply relativistic. Along these lines, we propose some arguments about the origin of this disagreement. To do this, we focus on the ideological reductionisms “religion” and “state” applied to the theological categories Dīn and dawla. The trace of this modern homologation can be traced through the historical connection of the West with the Islamic Arab world. Enlightened approaches and their ideal of progress found their best expression in reformist thinking. Since the 18th century, the solution to the problems derived from colonialism necessarily went through making the dogmatic foundations more flexible, injecting sceptical principles. The birth of this “political Islam” necessarily brought its “national” translation. The processes of construction of these states would feed the liberation movements, spreading for decades the deep wound of political violence and its export to the world. It is from this context that the Catholic Church has appealed to theological foundations as the only possible way to reverse the damage caused by geopolitics. Unfortunately, the states of opinion generated around this work divide, in the first place, Catholics. Throughout these pages, we will try to provide lines of reflection that add to our responsibility to generate a Christian conscience, open, reasonable and without interference, with respect to Islam.

Główna teza eseju brzmi: redefinicja polskości, uwzględniająca współczesne wyzwania cywilizacyjne, może mieć kluczowe znaczenie w kontekście poszukiwań wyjścia z obecnego kryzysu gospodarczego. W części pierwszej, bazując przede wszystkim na pracach Pitrima Sorokina i Niklasa Luhmanna, autor broni stanowiska, że współczesny kryzys ma przede wszystkim charakter kulturowy. W części drugiej ta ogólna refleksja została zawężona do analizy paradygmatu nauk społecznych, które zredukowały rozważania o człowieku do analizy jego preferencji, ustanawiając tym samym prymat paradygmatu ekonomicznego w kulturze. W części trzeciej zaprezentowana została argumentacja za tezą, że drogą wyjścia z tego redukcjonizmu, prowadzącego do „utowarowienia” człowieka, jest ustanowienie prymatu kultury nad rynkiem. Kluczowe role w tym procesie mają do odegrania społeczeństwo i państwo, spajane przez tożsamość narodową. Dlatego w części czwartej została zaprezentowana „integralna teoria narodu” Michała Łuczewskiego. W części piątej wątek ewolucji tożsamości narodowej został rozwinięty za sprawą analizy jej cyklów. W ten sposób dowiedziono, że polskość w obecnym kształcie weszła w fazę prymordializmu, tym samym narastają społeczne warunki umożliwiające jej redefinicję w kontekście dokonujących się zmian cywilizacyjnych. Zgodnie z tym w ostatniej części tekstu autor proponuje pięć kategorii formalnych i dziewięć kategorii materialnych, które mogłyby pretendować do rangi idei regulatywnych, porządkujących nasze myślenie o zredefiniowanej wizji polskości.
The main thesis of the paper is that a redefinition of the Polish national identity could be a crucial factor in the process of seeking a way out of the contemporary economic crisis. First, on the basis of works by Pitirim Sorokin (Sorokin 1957) and Niklas Luhmann (Luhmann 2007), the author argues that the contemporary economic crisis is deeply rooted in culture. In the second part this general ref lection leads to an analysis of the materialistic paradigm in social sciences, which limited the ref lection on the human being to his or her financial preferences (Grassl 2012). As a result of such a domination of the materialistic paradigm, the economic way of thinking dominates over our cultural life. The third part offers a project of redefinition of the paradigm which shows that to avoid objectifying human beings, we need to establish a primacy of moral values on the free market (Kędzierski 2012). National identity has to play a key role in this process because it bounds culture, society, and the state. Therefore, in the fourth part of the paper the author presents an integral theory of the nation (Łuczewski 2012). In the fifth part he describes the evolution of Polish identity which leads him to the conclusion that contemporary Polish identity is at a turning point. It should now be modified (Skrzypulec 2013) because its present form has entered the phase of primordiality, which makes it useless in the era of globalization. Therefore, in the last part of the paper, the author proposes five formal and nine material categories (or regulative ideas in the Kantian sense) which should be a basis of the redefined Polish identity.

This essay seeks to show the Polish household in the communist time as a space of modernity and modernisation activities. The chronological framework is set between 1957 – the date the Home Economics Committee affiliated to the League of Women was set up to contribute to, and be a mouthpiece of, the everyday life modernisation policy – and 1980, being the symbolic borderline between the modernity discourse and the Polish 1980–1 crisis discourse about household. The text refers to the surrealist invention of automatic writing examined in the anthropological and historical perspective. The aim of the article is to show the relationships of automatic writing with other non-literary cultural practices, especially graphological and spiritualistic. These practices explore the unconscious, strictly individual components of writing, aimed at revealing the social and psychological truth about the subject. They are also to show the domain of what is rejected by modern rationalism. In this article I want to show that the link between modernity, the avant-garde and the subconsciousness or superconsciousness is a complex epistemic fight with modern political and social administration that goes beyond the field of art to the field of broadly understood culture.

The paper deals with biographical, ideological and artistic links between Julian Tuwim, Alfred Döblin and Kurt Tucholsky. On the one hand, the basis of comparison are biographical similarities, the Jewish origin of those three writers, their family dramas, the experience of politically opressive school, the trauma of revolution or war, and the exile to name just a few. On the other hand, the article demonstrates the ways the modernity has influenced the attitudes and texts of Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim. While talking about modernity, the author focuses on such phenomena as secularisation and urbanisation processes, mass political movements, and new cultural challenges.Tuwim, Döblin and Tucholsky were born into assimilated Jewish families. Their perspective on the stereotypical Jews (the orthodox Jews as well as Jewish bankers or manufacturers) is marked with antipathy, or even contempt. The writers’ ambivalence towards the diapora and towards their own origin illustrate “Jewish self-hatred”; however, all three authors change their opinion on Jewry in the face of the growing anti-Semitic and Nazi danger, and especially the Holocaust. Döblin is proud of being Jewish after his visit to Poland in 1924, Tucholsky warns German Jews against the consequences of their passivitivy, and Tuwim publishes in 1944 his agitating manifesto We, Polish Jews. Last but not least, the three authors go into exile because of their Jewish ancestry and sociocultural activities. Therefore, it is no coincidence thatone cannot help having associations with Heinrich Heine: his biography can be interpreted as a prefiguration of a Jewish artist’s biography.Furthermore, Tuwim, Döblin and Tucholsky are notably sensitive to social questions, and their sensitivity to such issues results to some extent from their difficult childhood and youth. Especially significant seem in that respect family conflicts and the moving from city to city, since such experiences increase the feeling of loneliness and the vulnerability to depression. Nevertheless, Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim come with impetus into the cultural life of Germany and Poland and work in the areas of literature, cabaret (satire) as well as journalism. They share sympathy for the political left and fears of the orthodox communism. They are simultaneously advocates and ardent critics of great cities. They pay attention to new phenomena (the popularity of cars, the role of the press, the new morality) and react to them. Their aim is creating a culture which appeals to the masses and educates them in a non-intrusive way. However, the awareness of their own intellectual superiority imposes distance towards lower social groups. The distance stems, firstly, from the universal ambivalence artists feel towards the masses, and secondly, from the ideological moderation characteristic of petit bourgoisie and of the political centre. In general, Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim are idealists who hope for a humanitarian world which is impossible in the era of extrem political violence leading to the Holocaust.

The reception of the Holocaust in popular culture The reception of the Holocaust in popular culture is like a set of the broken images of the past. There are fluent differences between fiction and reality, beetween texts and facts, between knowledge and ignorance. This article concerns the forms of the influence of poplar culture on the representations of the Holocaust. Broken image can reveal a part of same event, the same fact. There are intellectual and axiological challenges between revealing and abusing the “Auschwitz” in the contemporary texts of culture. There are three main parts of the article: The contexts of the terms, Opened arguments and How instrumentally where are described the mechanisms of reduction, instrumentalization and mediatization of the reception of the Holocaust.

The afterthought on education is the consideration of the world of culture – the world of values. European culture is based on Aristotle`s thought. This is his metaphysics. The change of this paradigm occurs at the treshold of Modernity (N. Machiavelli) and it is followed by the thought of the Descartes; cogito. Here, the starting point is I, an individual, who undertakes the economic activity (Th. Hobbes, J. Locke). In the post-time the world of an individual undergoes the act of disintegration (contingency; R. Rorty) which can be associated with the state of “reassurance” (M. Gauchet). Today, there is no clarity as to what „education” really is.

Artykuł stanowi propozycję filozofii podmiotu politycznego, która uwzględniałaby osiągnięcia dwóch (zwykle niewchodzących ze sobą w dialog) tradycji badawczych. Z jednej strony historii oddolnej, z drugiej – nowego materializmu, zainteresowanego kształtowaniem się wspólnot wielogatunkowych. W kolejnych rozdziałach eseju autorzy pokazują, dlaczego koncepcja motłochu (jako podmiotu wielogatunkowego) może okazać się bardzo dobrym narzędziem, użytecznym zarazem do studiowania historii klas podporządkowanych, jak i do budowania nowej polityki w warunkach kryzysu klimatycznego. Proponowany przez nich kierunek polega na oparciu sprawczości ludzkich i nie-ludzkich zdominowanych na praktykach wielogatunkowego uwspólniania.
The article proposes the philosophy of political subject, which combines two currents of social thought that usually do not enter into dialogue with each other. On the one side the text draw from the popular history of the subaltern classes, and on the other side it is indebted to the new materialism, which remains interested in the multi-species communities’ formation. In the following chapters, the authors of the essay present why the concept of the rabble (as the multi-species subject) may turn out to be a very accurate tool to both study the history of the subaltern classes and to create new politics in the era of climate change. The proposeddirection leads through the agency of human and non-human subaltern beings by the practices of multi-species commoning.

Opis:

An attempt at reconstruction of the cultural model of Polish positivism as a component of the paradigm of modernity is the subject of the study. It tries to describe the constitutive determinants of the positivist world view in which „the philosophical discourse of modernity” was evidently reflected. Polish positivism turned out to be an explication of fundamental, emancipation  ideas of modernity, mainly the ideas of civilization progress that determined the positivists' historiosophic thinking. The spirit of modernity was manifested in Polish positivism not only on the plane of „great narratives” legitimizing intellectual discourses of that time, but it also influenced the status of the conception of subjectivity that was obligatory in that epoch, a conception that was basically founded on the modern episteme.

This paper explores the complex connection between heritage, light and power in Shanghai since the late 19th Century, and seeks a new understanding of how mutually coupled legacies of modernity, socialism and cosmopolitanism continue to shape this city’s unique identity and image. It focuses on the recent ideological remake of the skyline along the Huangpu River, achieved largely through the flamboyant illumination designed in 2018. Combining a number of visual and textual sources with fieldwork, it reveals the persistent symbolic role the city has played in a triumphant socialist cause, and assesses how past promises of a new Shanghai and a bright future for China have been sustained in the Reform Era. It forms a preliminary attempt to depict what the author argues should be perceived and studied as the engineering of a new propaganda medium which intersects with urban space governance. The implications of this project are discussed in the context of the threats and opportunities for Shanghai in terms of maintaining the city’s unique character and meaning coming from its own history and culture, rather than in terms of Shanghai simply being a vehicle for China’s modernity.

The text examines the relationship between the two categories – Auschwitz and modernity, in recognition of Jean Améry and Zygmunt Bauman, taking also into account the voice of the latter polemicists. In the first place is reconstructed Améry’s positive view on modernity with respect for the truth of the victims of Auschwitz. Then Bauman's critical position is discussed, indicating the modern provenance of the Holocaust and risk of recurrence of the Holocaust. Next the voices of Bauman’s opponents are presented. Yehuda Bauer, Henryk Grynberg, Andrzej Szahaj and Stefan Morawski pointed to the key role of ideology and irrational aspects of Nazism. At the end the common ground of Améry and Bauman is indicated – both turn to take the perspective of the victims.

This article addresses anthropological involvement in a political sphere constituted by the politicization of “difference” in European modernity projects, and in this context, especially conflicts related to gender, sexuality, race, nationality/ethnicity, or religious beliefs, which result in visions of antagonized, political Others. The author refers to the autoethnographic perspective and discusses her own disciplinary practices from the mid-nineties to today, pointing to the positive and negative sides of those practices. She first discusses the idea of critical anthropology as an element of academic activist debates within gender and queer studies. Then she looks at a more academic position, which makes critical anthropology into an instrument for creating images of a better future. Ultimately, she advocates a vision of critical anthropology that focuses on affective agency, thanks to which conflicting factions may perceive shared experiences and feelings. She does not assume that this kind of critical engagement is capable of bringing about broader social or political change, but believes it could make a contribution to acceptance of the Other on the micro-scale.
W artykule zostają podjęte kwestie możliwości zaangażowania antropologicznego w polu politycznego ukonstytuowanym poprzez polityzację „różnicy” w europejskich projektach nowoczesnościa, a w tym kontekście zawłaszcza konflikty związane z płcią, seksualnością, rasą, narodowością/etnicznością czy przekonaniami religijnymi, których efektem są wizje zantagonizowanych politycznych Innych. Autorka odwołuje się do perspektywy autoetnograficznej i omawia własne praktyki  dyscyplinarne stosowane od połowy lat dziewięćdziesiątych do dziś, wskazując na ich dobre i złe strony. Najpierw zajmuje się ideą antropologii krytycznej jako elementem akademickich debat aktywistycznych w przestrzeniach studiów gender i queer. Następnie przygląda się stanowisku o charakterze bardziej akademickim, które sytuuje antropologię krytyczną w roli narzędzia służącego kreowaniu wyobrażeń lepszej przyszłości. Ostatecznie opowiada się za wizją antropologii krytycznej w centrum zainteresowań stawiającej sprawczość afektywną, dzięki której skonfliktowane frakcje mogą dostrzec podzielane doświadczenia i uczucia. Nie zakłada, że ten rodzaj zaangażowania krytycznego jest w stanie przynieść zmiany społeczne/polityczne o szerszym zasięgu, sądzi jednak, iż może on wnieść wkład w oswajanie Inności w mikroskali.

Under the common denomination of Cuban avant-garde, the present article gathers texts of versatile subject matters and poetics: Regino Pedroso’s “Salutación fraterna del taller mecánico” (1927), Manuel Navarro Luna’s Surco (1928), Mariano Brull’s Poemas en menguante (1928) and Ramón Guirao’s Bailadora de rumba (1928). Nevertheless, all of them are characterised by the same avant-garde attitude consisting in searching for novelty and, above all, they reveal a similar “structure of feeling” (Williams 1977). The euphoria, proper for the first decades of independence (always controlled by the “the giant with seven-league boots”) was replaced by confusion and disorientation experienced after the economic depression of 1920, disagreement with corruption, clientelism and other blights on the Republic’s political life, and with the idea of modernity reduced to material progress. The article studies the ways in which modern avant-garde Cuban literature gains insights into objective factors of modernity. It also aims at explaining why Cuban avant-garde writers, instead of internalizing modern fantasies and dreams (Berman 1988), try to generate compensatory constructions which pretend to abolish them (Cros 1997).

W artykule, w nawiązaniu do myśli Zygmunta Baumana, zostały omówione warunki w społeczeństwie płynnej nowoczesności, które sprawiły, że mobilność stała się dla jego członków jedną z podstawowych wartości (wyznacznikiem sukcesu). Celem tekstu jest próba ustalenia, w jakim stopniu płynnonowoczesny stosunek do mobilności (najogólniej mówiąc: brak przywiązania do określonej przestrzeni fizycznej i społecznej) jest obecny wśród młodych Polaków, wychowanychw Polsce po 2004 roku (po akcesji do Unii Europejskiej). Kwestia jest analizowanana podstawie wyników badań pilotażowych (N=92) nad mobilnością młodzieży akademickiej (studentów Wydziału Studiów Edukacyjnych UAM w Poznaniu). Rozważania kończy próba wyjaśnienia uzyskanych rezultatów badań.
The article discusses conditions in the society of liquid modernity in lightof Zygmunt Bauman’s diagnosis. Because of those conditions, mobility (generallyspeaking, the lack of strong bonds with physical and social space) became very important.The article aims to discuss the point to which Bauman’s diagnosis coincideswith the characteristics of Poles who grew up after accession to the European Unionin 2004. The issue is analyzed on the basis of author’s pilot research into the mobilityof university students (N=92) of the Faculty of Educational Studies of Adam MickiewiczUniversity in Poznań. It concludes with an attempt to explain the researchfindings.

The essays focuses on J. H. Prynne’s Biting the Air. Taking as a departure point Adorno’s idea of the role of art in society, it is argued here that Prynne’s sequence of poems thematises a conflict between the supremacy of the science- and market-oriented narratives of suppression of society and the attempts to subvert that narrative through a reinvention of the signifying process of language. Prynne resorts to radical parataxis in order to undermine the ostensibly natural hegemony of accepted idioms of science and market economy, offering a dense network of meanings that cannot be reduced to a flat formula.

The article introduces the most important philosophical and musicological contexts of Jakub Momro’s book The ear has no eyelid. Sonic primordial scenes. The author of the book places the music and sonic practices of late modernity into an extensive network of philosophical concepts, especially those related to the philosophy of deconstruction and psychoanalysis. In this way he shows the relationship between music and the issues of time, voice, materiality and corporeality, sound and vision, freedom and determinism, trauma and desire. The text also includes a reconstruction of some theses on the ephemeral and performative nature of sound and on listening as the domain of freedom. At the end conclusions are presented about the importance of the book in the context of contemporary musical thought.

On the conscience of bordersThis article reflects on the paradoxes inherent in our thinking on liminal territories, which ranges from affirmation to contestation. Its metaphorical title paraphrases Elias Canetti’s idea of the “conscience of words” and brings into focus the connection between discussions of borders and limits on the one hand, and the moral sensitivity of the members and cultural descendants of Judeo-Christian culture on the other. The ways in which people conceptualise borders and limits are presented from the perspective of the beginning (in the Gadamerian sense), i.e. the Bible, and the end (including, for example, Bauman’s concept of “liquid modernity” and Agamben’s post-secular idea of reality as a “camp”). The article concludes with a presentation of how the concepts of liminality and borders are presented (often metaphorically) by sociologists and linguists conducting field studies in Poland’s eastern and western borderlands. O sumieniu granicW artykule podjęto próbę refleksji na temat paradoksów ludzkiego myślenia o granicach terytoriów, rozpiętego między afirmacją a kontestacją. Tytułowa parafraza konceptu Canettiego („sumienie słów”) ma charakter metaforyczny i służy wydobyciu związku mówienia o granicach z wrażliwością moralną ludzi należących do kręgu kultury judeochrześcijańskiej lub będących jej dziedzicami. Sposoby konceptualizowania granic przedstawiono z perspektywy ustanowionego (w sensie Gadamerowskim) początku (Biblia) i końca (m.in. koncepcja „płynnej nowoczesności” Baumana czy „świata-obozu” w postsekularnej myśli Agambena). Tekst zamyka prezentacja ujęć zjawiska graniczności/pograniczności (i towarzyszących temu metaforyzacji) w myśli socjologów i językoznawców prowadzących badania terenowe na wschodnich i zachodnich rubieżach Polski.

A context of my paper is the debate on reason, tradition and traditional communities, in which this moral and epistemological issues were discussed as a part of general socio-philosophical theory of modernity. In particular I intend to locate my considerations in the context of formal-pragmatic theory of modern communicative rationality developed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. I will provide a competitive model of the rationality of tradition by applying a conceptual toolkit of pragmatically oriented analysis to explain practices connected with vocabulary of tradition. I argue that tradition as a communication system has a fully rational structure. My main claim is that communicative structure of tradition has a rational structure of language game. This structure includes defined principles of communication for members of closed tradition-grounded community and rule of inclusion for potential new members. Firstly I consider closely internal principles of communication within the framework of tradition contrasting them shortly with normative-deontic rules of the postenlightenment idea of pragmatic communication discussed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. After that I examine the rule of inclusion — the rule, which mediates between closed system of tradition-based community and his environment.

Opis:

The article presents one of the aspects of Norwid’s attitude towards modernity – it is the vision of the city, especially of Paris, in the poet’s works, mainly in his letters. As it turns out, the author only to a slight degree is interested in his contemporary cities, even in the one in which he has come to spend a considerable part of his life, and which was becoming the capital of the modern world at that time. He ignores the phenomena connected with the modernity that is being formed within the town. On the other hand he writes about old cities, he draws the reader’s attention to municipal libraries and art galleries. He thinks about the contemporary city in the moralist religious and historical perspective, criticizing ethical consequences of urbanization, that in his opinion are destructive. Such an attitude reveals the poet’s specific relation towards the processes of modernization – it should be added: the relation close to  Romantics, – that is ambivalence and anxiety connected with experiencing them. It also shouldbe noted that Norwid’s reflection connected with modernity is predominantly concerned with the question of the outlook on the world, and to a lesser degree – with the material experience of modernization.

Opis:

The aim of the article is to analyze the mutual relations of tradition and modernity (novelty). The confrontation of these two categories often leads to conflicts of values and past arrangements with those oriented towards the future. The manifestations and consequences of this conflict are visible in the area of politics, society, culture and the economy. The article analyzes the nature of the conflict between ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ in the food sector. It emphasizes the different nature, intensity of the course and the main stakeholders of the conflict in this area in relation to other sectors of the economy.
Celem artykułu jest analiza wzajemnych relacji tradycji i nowoczesności (nowości). Konfrontacja tych dwóch kategorii prowadzi często do konfliktów wartości i ustaleń przeszłości z tymi zorientowanymi na przyszłość. Przejawy oraz konsekwencje tego konfliktu widoczne są w obszarze polityki, społeczeństwa, kultury jak i gospodarki (ekonomii). W artykule poddano analizie charakter konfliktu tradycji i nowoczesności w obszarze sektora żywności. Podkreśla się w nim odmienny charakter, intensywność przebiegu oraz głównych interesariuszy konfliktu w tym obszarze w stosunku do innych sektorów gospodarki.

W artykule przedstawiono problem obrazu (sposobu postrzegania) dziecka w kulturze średniowiecznej z perspektywy dwóch wybranych sposobów postrzegania dziecka obecnych we współczesności. Są nimi romantyczna idea dziecka oraz idea dziecka jako nie-dorosłego. Umiejscowienie badanego problemu w perspektywie porównawczej miało dać odpowiedź na dwa pytania. Pierwsze dotyczy kwestii obecności w kulturze i społeczeństwie okresu średniowiecza, pojmowania dziecka jako istoty różnej od dorosłego. Drugie zaś, zakładając pozytywną odpowiedź na pierwsze pytanie, dotyczy właściwych dla kultury średniowiecznej treści wypełniających owe dwa sposoby postrzegania dzieci, ich podobieństw i różnic w stosunku do współczesności. Należy też podkreślić, że omawiane dwa obrazy dziecka nie wyczerpują wszystkich sposobów jego postrzegania obecnych w średniowieczu. Epokę tę cechuje także wspólna z współczesnością, różnorodność i złożoność sposobów postrzegania dziecka, których nie można zawężać, jak niekiedy się to próbuje, do jednego tylko modelu.

The author raises the issues of adult education in the age of liquid modernity. He indicates the changes in the adults approach to education which are determined by the requirements of the modernity, the period described by Zygmunt Bauman as the age of liquid modernity. Furthermore, the author searches for the answers to the following questions: what the motives of contemporary adults to undertake education are, and whether in the world of liquid modernity, fast life, diverse and dynamically transforming conditions of the labour market, constantly high level of unemployment we deal with adult education or rather adult learning?
Autor w artykule podejmuje kwestie dotyczące kształcenia dorosłych w dobie płynnej nowoczesności. Wskazuje na zmiany w podejściu osób dorosłych do kształcenia, zmiany determinowane wymogami współczesności – określanej przez Zygmunta Baumana okresem płynnej nowoczesności. Poszukuje także odpowiedzi na pytania: jakimi motywami kierują się współcześnie ludzie dorośli, podejmując kształcenie oraz czy w świecie płynnej nowoczesności, „szybkiego” życia, zróżnicowanych i dynamicznie przeobrażających się wymogów rynku pracy, utrzymującego się wysokiego poziomu bezrobocia mamy do czynienia z kształceniem czy raczej z uczeniem się dorosłych?

Esej ten jest próbą krytyki tak zwanej “krytyki antysystemowej”, wystosowaną z pozycji afirmacji nowoczesności jako epoki, która postawiła na prymat życia nad myśleniem. Odwołując się do koncepcji Marshalla Bermana, zwanej tu „witalistycznym marksizmem”, esej podkreśla unikatową i odrębną rolę pojęcia życia w modernitas, które przeciwstawia się wszelkim apriorycznym i odgórnym projektom intelektualnym. Zdumiewająca zgodność myśli prawicowej i lewicowej w odniesieniu do nowoczesności wynika jego zdaniem stąd, że wszyscy ci myśliciele są właśnie nade wszystko myślicielami, wciąż jeszcze wyznającymi stary, przednowoczesny, Platoński prymat myślenia nad życiem. W swej części konstruktywnej natomiast esej ten przedstawia nowoczesną ideę „życia obiecanego”, które mogłoby stać się natchnieniem nowego typu myślicieli, lojalnych wobec projektu nowoczesności.
This essay constitutes an attempt to criticize the so-called anti-systemic critique from the positions which strongly affirm modernity as an epoch based on the primacy of life over thinking. By referring to the ideas of Marshall Bermann which he called “Marxist Vitalism”, this essay emphasizes a unique and innovative role of the concept of life in modernity as opposed to any apriorical and preestablished intellectual project. The seemingly astonishing harmony between the Left and Right variants of “anti-modernism” consists precisely in the fact that all those thinkers who criticize modernity are most of all thinkers who naturally assume the old, premodern, essentially Platonic primacy of thinking over life. In its constructive part, the essay presents the modern idea of a “promised life” which it links to political messianism; it expresses an optimistic belief that it can become a new inspiration for the thinkers to come who will accept the specificity of modernitas and learn how to be loyal to its premises.

Artykuł dotyczy wątków górskich i alpinistycznych w wybranych tekstach Zygmunta Haupta. Autor analizuje sposoby opisywania przestrzeni górskich i doświadczeń związanych z górami, a także rozważa skalę zainteresowania alpinizmem. Rozpatruje, czy podsuwane przez Haupta inspiracje mogą posłużyć za podstawę rekonstrukcji hipotetycznych wpływów i potwierdzać skalę znajomości fachowego piśmiennictwa góroznawczego. Przedstawia, w jaki sposób włączanie gór i związanych z nimi nowych praktyk kulturowych, przede wszystkim wspinaczki i alpinizmu, w obszar eksplorowanych przez Haupta tematów i problemów łączyło się z refleksją pisarza odnośnie do procesów fundujących nowoczesność.
This article discusses the motifs of mountains and mountaineering in Zygmunt Haupt’s selected texts. The author analyzes how mountain spaces and experiences related to mountains are described, and also reflects on the scale of mountaineering fascinations. He examines whether inspirations suggested by Haupt may be used to reconstruct his hypothetical influences, thus proving that Haupt had a very good knowledge of professional articles and books on mountaineering. The article further demonstrates how Haupt combines the theme of mountains and the related new cultural practices, primarily climbing and mountaineering, with reflection on the processes which constitute modernity.

The article concerns selected aspects of Jean-Claude Kaufmann’s theory of Self, especially those that relate to changes in Self. Considerations of the author are accompanied by the following questions: 1) how is change in self understood in the French sociologist’s concept?; 2) what is characteristic of this change in the concept? The author presents an outline of Kaufmann’s idea of modernity and his theory of Self, and then he analyses the theory of changes in Self proposed by the French thinker, including interpretation of dreams, small passions and anomic events. Opis:

This paper seeks to show Frédéric Bastiat’s views against the backdrop of his epoch. He lived in the first half of the nineteenth century, in the period when the rationalistic paradigm was submitted to a revision. In line with this paradigm, the social order is constructed above all on the foundation of institutions. Hence the ideas to construct new social communities deprived of private property, communities that live in conformity with an imposed and prearranged model. Bastiat criticises such ideas and points instead to the natural forces of progress inherent in each individual human being and in natural communities that this being established. The French thinker refers – unlike Rousseau – on the one hand to the fact of evil and imperfection, and on the other to our inherent drive towards good and perfection, i.e. our perfectibility. Evil and imperfection of human nature are our driving and creative forces. On the way to progress, planned by the Creator, the individual is governed by the principles of responsibility and solidarity, and seeks to integrate the areas of knowledge and faith. The communities that individuals establish result from their struggle against evil in all dimensions.

In the context of the contemporary civilizational changes and the cross-roads of modernity and post modernity paradigms, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the post-migrant cultural identities is more visible. The author argues that to understand the mechanism of that specificity requires the evolution of theoretical thought as well as new research methodology on the processes of identity creation, since in comparison with the previous migration waves, the situation of post-migrant generations has significantly changed in the area of politics, ethnicity and group mobilization. The paper shows the most important changes in the domain of ethnicity, creating the background for interpreting ethnic mobilization of post-migrant generations.

Poniższy tekst jest tłumaczeniem fragmentu książki Jonathana Flatley’a Affective Mapping Melancholia and the Politics of Modernism. Zaskakujące twierdzenie, na którym autor opiera swój wywód, dotyczy melancholii i związanej z nią utraty. Okazuje się bowiem, iż nie wszystkie melancholie są przygnębiające. Obrazując szlaki modernizacji, Flatley wskazuje na rolę i znaczenie utraty, która nie tylko miała wpływ, ale często kreśliła twórczą mapę pisarzy oraz wyznaczała tor zachodzących zmian społeczno-kulturowych.
The following text is a translation of fragment of Jonathan Flatley’s book Affective Mapping Melancholia and the Politics of Modernism. The suprising claim of Affective Mapping is that dwelling on loss and melancholia is not necessarily depressing. Flatley argues that melancholy can lead people and writers to productively re-map their relationship to the world. Modernism is an accurate portrait of these processes and related consequences.

Artykuł stanowi próbę właściwego ujęcia „problemu teologiczno-politycznego”, o którym pisał Leo Strauss. Termin ten został celowo wskazany jako klamra dociekań myśliciela słynącego z udanej próby ożywienia w minionym stuleciu klasycznej filozofii politycznej a contra nowoczesnej politologii. Autorka polemizuje ze sposobem rozumienia „problemu teologiczno-politycznego” przez Heinricha Meiera, dla którego kwestia ta zamyka się we wskazaniu dogodnej płaszczyzny konfrontacji filozofa z nieakceptowalnymi dlań roszczeniami prawdy objawionej. Tymczasem, choć rzeczywiście mamy tu do czynienia z kształtującym filozoficzną samoświadomość napięciem między filozofią i objawieniem, to należy uważniej przyjrzeć się roli objawienia w koncepcji L. Straussa. Rolę tę – mającą zasadniczo sens moralny – rozpatruje się na podstawie wyraźnego rozróżnienia pomiędzy chrześcijańską i żydowską wersją treści objawionych. L. Strauss pogłębia stale swą refleksję nad przednowoczesną postacią racjonalizmu, nieobarczoną przesadnym zaufaniem do rozumu, charakterystycznym dla intelektualnej spuścizny oświecenia. Nie proponuje on własnych konstrukcji teologicznych (i nie uważa się w ogóle za człowieka wierzącego), jednak wskazuje na gruncie teoretycznym możliwy sens argumentów formułowanych w imię ważności objawienia i nie sprowadza tegoż do aktu „ślepej wiary”. Oznacza to zarazem krytyczne odrzucenie chrześcijańskiej perspektywy na to, co objawione; co kojarzy się raczej z „objawioną teologią” czy doktryną wymagającą intelektualnego zawierzenia, niż z „interpretacją prawną” i w czym odnajduje się ewentualne źródła błędów opasujących myśl nowoczesną. Oddzielne perspektywy objawienia to także różne konteksty uprawiania filozofii, która dla L. Straussa pozostaje nade wszystko „drogą życia” człowieka stale poszukującego prawdy. Wszakże myśliciel ten, według autorki, widzi istotną i zapewne niezbywalną rolę objawienia jako podstawy sądów moralnych mających walor uniwersalności. Przywołane w artykule fragmenty jego komentarzy do średniowiecznych dzieł myśli żydowskiej i muzułmańskiej służą wydobyciu tego właśnie aspektu rozważań teologiczno-politycznych: objawienie w oczach filozofa formuje stałe wyzwanie o tyle, o ile musi on wątpić we własną zdolność do wypowiedzenia – w oparciu o sam rozum – uniwersalnych zasad moralności. Autorka stwierdza wreszcie, że w tym ujęciu objawienie ma z konieczności sens partykularny: jego szczególną formą jest prawo, a treść dotyczy powszechnej troski o każdego człowieka. Należy wszelako zauważyć, że podjęta przez L. Celem pracy było zbudowanie sztucznych sieci neuronowych przeznaczonych do oceny nowoczesności techniczno-konstrukcyjnej różnych modeli ciągników rolniczych. Te modele neuronowe (wielowarstwowe Perceptrony) pozwalają na ocenę grup cech charakteryzujących: silnik, WOM, uciąg, napęd, wielkość ciągnika, trójpunktowy układ zawieszenia, inne cechy, a następnie ocenę całego ciągnika. Sieci te wykazują małe wartości błędów średniokwadratowych (od 1,05 do 2,50 roku dla oceny grup cech, oraz 0,38 i 0,96 roku dla oceny całego ciągnika).
The purpose of the work was to build artificial neural networks designed to assess technical and constructional modernity of various farm tractor models. These neural models (multiplayer Perceptrons) allow to evaluate groups of properties that characterise: a motor, power take-off shaft, draw-bar pull, drive, tractor size, three-point suspension system, other properties, and finally - the whole tractor. These networks show low mean square error values (from 1.05 to 2.50 years when assessing groups of properties, and 0.38 and 0.96 years in case of the whole tractor).

France has been witnessing a proliferation of autobiographical literatures, also known as personal or intimate literatures, in recent decades. These stories take different forms and tell the life or life periods of an individual. These are life stories that claim a subjective ‘I’. In Iran, self-writing has begun, in recent years, to interest modern writers and critics who try, in more or less disguised forms, to tell in writing the story of their lives in a context where literature is always in direct connection with politics. In this context, the purpose of this article is to question the first self-writings that appeared in Iran. In what context has this self-literature emerged? How is the first self-writing of Iranian writers expressed? What is its real place? The first part of this article will be devoted to the context of the emergence of autobiography, and the relationship between modern society and self-writing from the eighteenth century in France, which will serve as a model to explain, in a second time, the framework of appearance of autobiography in Iran. The second part will analyze textual elements, the narration of A stone on a tomb, the first autobiography in Iran.

Art museum is a space of visualisation of myths and narration of modernity, combines in itself rationality with emotionality, thus provides ambivalent experiences to the audience. Critics of museums such as D. Preziosi present the negative side of the Enlightenment rationality: objectification of artworks and of the subject, building of scientific constructions acting for authorities. In turn, theoreticians who are favorably disposed towards museums such as O. Marquard or A. Huyssen convince that the museum in modern times performs a compensatory role, and its postmodern form allows a magnitude of histories and aesthetics. However, it was ultimately J.-F. Lyotard who becomes its patron, since artist choosing museum for their activities resist the established thought, realising Lyotard's idea of justice as a dispute.

Odwołując się do modeli interpretacji przyjętych w antropologii kulturowej, teorii stosunków międzynarodowych i nauce o polityce, autor podkreśla, iż właściwe rozumienie fundamentalnych zagadnień obronności powinno oznaczać wnikanie do sfery przeświadczeń, które są związane z funkcjonującą w każdej kulturze opozycją ładu i chaosu. W centrum uwagi pojawia się pojęcie „drugiej nowoczesności”, pozwalające postawić fundamentalne pytania dotyczące dyskomfortu związanego z dekompozycją struktur nowoczesności.
The article brings to our notice important questions concerning the relationship between conceptions of defense and security and the notion of political order. In effort to embrace this topic, cultural anthropology, political science and theory of international relations are taken into consideration as important, guide-offering, domains of scientific knowledge. The bottom line, however, is shaped by the notion of understanding, belonging to the tradition of hermeneutics. The notion of “second modernity”, having a lot to do with works of Ulrich Beck, gives the article its edge.

Current discussion on the consequences of modernity, and social effects of the ongoing globalization of the world, more and more frequently focus on the increasing number of signs of the world’s unification, and at the same time tendencies to divide it not necessarily according to the designated national borders, are becoming visible. Towards the end of the 20th century, factors conducive to integration of the world and communities that inhabit it, began to become more apparent. Integration complements, clubs and harmonizes particular spheres of human existence and activity. It is a process, during which the structure of integrating elements alters (they frequently undergo a forced change and adapt to each other) and the bond is subject to evolve. It is a dynamic process that creates new quality.

The controversies between the United States and the European Union of the last decade signify much deeper cultural differences between these two parts of the transatlantic civilization than just their immediate political responses to particular events after 9/11 2001. Both America and the Western part of the European Union are modern political and cultural entities, but their responses to modernity and modernization have since the 17th century and 18th century been different. Inside the European Union the cultural rift is also visible between the original western European countries and the post-soviet, post-Yalta countries of Eastern Europe accepted in 2004 and 2007, which have belonged to Europe for a thousand years, but have been affected much less by modernity and modernization of the 18th century Enlightenment type. What we thus have is a tripartite division within transatlantic civilization which has many consequences as far as the immediate political choices and aims taken up by the United States, the western dominant countries of the European Union and the latter’s new part in Eastern Europe. The major difference between the United States and the western part of the European Union concerns the way both entities were built, America from bottom up, Europe and then the European Union from top down. There are also other significant differences concerning religious life, a much more pronounced ideological character of the United States, and the way the relationship between the elites and their societies are structured. The differences between the western part of the European Union and the post-Yalta countries of Eastern Europe concern mainly the mutual images what the new common European Union should be, the different strategies of modernization applied to the Eastern part, especially cultural modernization which touches on such sensitive issues as post-colonialism, cultural identity or a question of solidarity of all countries of the European Union or domination within it of the strongest ones.

The aim of the article is to present the psychological roots of fundamentalism, which can be found in each type of the phenomenon, and also an attempt to show fundamentalism, as the configuration of certain personality traits. As the basis for such an interpretation of fundamentalism, serve the psychological approach, which relate to the personality, cognitive style, refer to the prejudices, as well as to the concept of authoritarian personality and its constitutive characteristics. Article raised the question of so–called “fundamentalist personality” on the basis of diversity of manifestations of this phenomenon and its correlation with the concepts of authoritarianism and dogmatism. Author also addresses psychological category of attitude, which is the starting point in the discussion of the phenomena, such as fundamentalism or nationalism. In the background of considerations is an attempt to organize knowledge on fundamentalism, taking into account the historical roots of the phenomenon, and also, as a complementary reflection, a legitimacy of identifying fundamentalism with terrorism.
