This paper explores how individuals who self-identify on Twitter as sociologists holding teaching posts at institutions of higher education use the popular micro-blogging social media site. A total of 152,977 tweets from profiles of 130 sociologists were collected and examined using qualitative media analysis. What emerged from these data was an empirical case for an expanded conceptualization of Burawoy’s vision of public sociology. Building upon published research (Schneider and Simonetto 2016), the purpose of this conceptually informed paper is to further empirically develop e-public sociology – a form of public sociology that emerges through use of social media whereby the sociologist can simultaneously be the generator and interlocutor of dialogue with multiple publics. Suggestions for future research are noted.

The text describes how the public task of the social sciences could be linked with the practice of critical sociology. Recently, interesting changes have occurred which extend this prospect. In the last years, aside from critical analyses of changing social conditions, there have also been auto-reflections on the social entanglement of knowledge about the transformation. Critical analysis of the public function of scientific diagnoses and the engagement of sociologists is the result of earlier thinking about the model of imitative modernization. The source of the latter’s domination can be sought in the social characteristics of Eastern Europe; the basis is recognition of the area’s historical peripheralness and long-lasting economic backwardness. The growing interest in critical sociology in Poland not only broadens the interpretative palette, but above all raises questions about the originality of interpretations: that is, it addresses the mechanism of import or local creation in the interpretation of social phenomena in the post-communist sphere.

Symbolic interactionists can gain much by engaging more with public audiences. One way to do this is through open-access publishing, such that the content of interactionist research is freely available to the global public. We reflect on the issue of public sociology within symbolic interactionism, considering the recent impact of digital technology and social media. Within this context, we consider the rise of the open-access movement in scholarly publishing, and consider strategies to better realize open-access in the symbolic interactionist field. We argue that doing this will greatly benefit the development of a more public interactionism moving forward.

This talk refers only to the roles of academic sociologists. Critical analysis of popular ideologies („myths”), new social movements and initiatives, social problems and troubles on the micro and macro scales, ways of resolving them and social costs of such resolution, should be the basic tasks of sociologists. Elementary forms of liberal democracy seem to be an external precondition of playing such a role.

Engaged anthropology is analyzed in this text as part of the engaged social sciences. The author uses Michael Burawoy’s concept of public sociology and Thomas Hylland Eriksen’s concept of public anthropology to organize the anthropological field and distinguish four types of anthropology: academic; critical; applied; and public and engaged. Public anthropology is understood here as the participation of anthropologists in public debate while engaged (in the strict sense of the term) on behalf of a community under study. This introduction to Engaged Anthropology in a Time of Growing Nationalism [Antropologia zaangażowana w czasie nacjonalistycznego wzmożenia; Kultura i Społeczeństwo 2020, no. 2] presents the main issues of the volume’s papers on the theoretical and practical problems of engaged anthropology as seen from Poland.
Antropologia zaangażowana została potraktowana przez autorkę jako część zaangażowanych nauk społecznych. Stosując w analizie pojęcia socjologii publicznej Michaela Burawoya oraz antropologii publicznej Thomasa Hyllanda Eriksena, określa ona pole antropologii oraz wyróżnia w jej obrębie cztery typy — antropologia akademicka, krytyczna, stosowana oraz zaangażowana antropologia publiczna. Ta ostatnia jest rozumiana jako zaangażowanie (w sensie dosłownym) antropologów w debatę publiczną po stronie społeczności bedącej przedmiotem ich badań. Tekst ten jest wstępem do zeszytu czasopisma „Kultura i Społeczeństwo” (2020, nr 2) pt. „Antropologia zaangażowana w czasie nacjonalistycznego wzmożenia”, w którym znalazły się artykuły poświęcone teoretycznym i praktycznym problemom antropologii zaangażowanej postrzeganym z polskiej perspektywy.

Z perspektywy socjologii nauki analizuję możliwości rozwoju socjologii historycznej w Polsce jako osobnej subdyscypliny. Zastanawiam się nad zaletami budowania kariery akademickiej w socjologii historycznej. Historia jest ważnym zasobem w walkach symbolicznych toczonych w debacie publicznej w Polsce. Podejmowanie tematów historycznych zbliża socjologów do udziału w niej i otwiera pozaakademickie obszary aktywności. Jednocześnie analizy historyczne umożliwiają socjologom wniesienie polskiej tematyki badawczej do międzynarodowego obiegu naukowego i zabranie głosu w dyskusjach o globalnych zjawiskach społecznych. Te dwie cechy łączą się i wzajemnie warunkują, ponieważ projekty badania przeszłości przez socjologów nakierowane są na dostarczenie nowych interpretacji polskiej historii, które jednocześnie wpisują się w rozwijające się w nauce światowej nurty, np. historii imperiów czy historii globalnej. Podstawą analizy są wyniki pogłębionych wywiadów, przeprowadzonych w 2020 roku wśród polskich socjologów o roli przeszłości w ich pracy badawczej.
The article analyses the prospects for the development of historical sociology in Poland as a separate sub-discipline, and in particular the opportunities for building an academic career within it, from the perspective of the sociology of science. History is an important resource in the symbolic battles fought in public debate in Poland. Tackling historical topics brings sociologists closer to participating in this debate and opens up non-academic areas of activity. At the same time historical analyses enable them to bring Polish topics of research to an international academic audience, and contribute to discussions on global social phenomena. These two aspects combine and condition each other, because projects in which sociologists research the past aim at providing new interpretations of Polish history, which are simultaneously in tune with growing trends in world science, such as the themes of history of empires and global history. The findings of in-depth interviews conducted with Polish sociologists in 2020 constitute the basis of this analysis.

Artykuł jest próbą diagnozy kondycji współczesnej socjologii (jej słabości, ale także jej potencjalnych atutów) na podstawie analizy jej języka, która pozwoliła sformułować kilka scenariuszy dotyczących dalszych losów socjologii. Dwa z nich (scenariusz literaturyzacji socjologii oraz scenariusz jej stopniowego zrastania się z naukami o złożoności) wydają się równoznaczne ze stopniową samolikwidacją socjologii. Kolejny – scjentyzacja socjologii i podporządkowanie jej znacznie bardziej restrykcyjnym niż do tej pory reżimom terminologicznymi i metodologicznym jawi się jako scenariusz praktycznie nierealny – biorąc pod uwagę historię socjologii i jej teoretyczno-metodologiczny pluralizm. Trzy ostatnie zasygnalizowane w artykule scenariusze: scenariusz socjologii rozwijającej się jako par excellence socjologiczna teoria złożoności, scenariusz socjologii opartej na śladach zastanych oraz scenariusz socjologii animacyjno-interwencyjnej, oznaczają wprawdzie, że będzie zmuszona radykalnie się zmienić, lecz równocześnie w największym stopniu prolongują jej szanse na przetrwanie jako dyscypliny naukowej.
The paper is an attempt to diagnose the condition of contemporary sociology (its weaknesses, but also its potential strengths) based on an analysis of its language. On this basis, several scenarios concerning the future of sociology are formulated. Two of them (the scenario of the literaturization of sociology and the scenario of its gradual blending with the sciences of complexity) seem to be tantamount to the gradual self-elimination of sociology. Another – the scientization of sociology and its subordination to terminological and methodological regimes much more restrictive than previous ones – appears to be a practically unrealistic scenario, taking into account the history of sociology and its theoretical and methodological pluralism. The last three scenarios mentioned in the paper: the scenario of sociology developing as a sociological theory of complexity par excellence, the scenario of sociology based on existing traces, and the scenario of animation-intervention sociology, mean that it will be forced to undergo radical change, while at the same time seeking to prolong its chances of survival to the greatest extent as a scientific discipline.

Since sociology deals with the description of society as an abstract whole concept, its cultivation is only possible if sociologists are able to follow sociological imagination - the ability of distancing itself from the actual conditions of life perceived by each person subjectively. The sociological imagination is an open-space perception and understanding of human needs, attitudes, aspirations, and preferences. Its openness involves methodical openness as well. The sociological imagination confronts the difficult task of contemporary sociology to reach what is its proper object. Under the present circumstances it is the people subjected to transformations, caused by globalization processes. One effect of these transformations is to push the public sphere socialitas into the background by international capital and state administration. Burawoy’s postulate of including a new sociological sub-discipline called organic public sociology into the established sociological division is an answer he gives to the question: how is contemporary sociology to reach and animate individuals and groups living on the fringe? Public sociology defined by Burawoy is a project that aims at making the public sphere more vital by awakening civil awareness of how to make use of their status as state citizens in communities. It is also to be treated as an attempt at striving to establish contact between sociology and society and keep in touch with both. Burawoy writes from the vantage point of those below, which makes his narratives sound neo-Marxist in a sense. What is striking in his position is searching for moral strongholds of sociology. It is to be seen both in the line in which he describes the global role of American sociology as a frame of reference for sociology cultivated outside the USA, and where he enhances the status of sociological reflexive knowledge. Besides, the strong moral commitment and deontology that resonate within every inch of Burawoy’s narratives compose the backdrop of public sociology. The project of public sociology presented by Burawoy in 2004 split the sociological environment into three groups: keen adherents, partial adherents, and staunch opponents. This means that the arguments presented by him in different ways appeal to the imagination of those concerned and, as any other arguments, have strong and weak points. The project elaborated by Burawoy undoubtedly proved to be successful if we consider the international debate it initiated, the debate on public sociology and the role of contemporary sociology in general.

This article presents the conditions of creating a system for implementing recommendations from evaluation studies which were conducted within the cohesion policy in Poland. The purpose of this analysis was to identify main problems and barriers related to the transformation of evaluation studies into practical recommendations, and to identify factors affecting the adoption and implementation of recommendations by recipients and stakeholders of evaluation. Conclusions were based on the desk research of such documents as: guidelines and procedures for the implementation of evaluation, evaluation and meta-evaluation reports, recommendation and implementation tables. The main barriers and factors favouring the transfer of knowledge from evaluation research to management practices in public administration and local governments were pointed out. The most common restrictions on use of evaluation results include: weak participation of stakeholders in the process of study planning; inconsistency between the subject of evaluation and the scope and content of recommendations; low level of knowledge of the nature and objectives of evaluation among decision-makers; lack of feedback regarding the implementation of recommendations for evaluators. The article gives reasons for the relationship among such features of the evaluation process as: openness, participation and communication skills, quality of recommendations. Evaluation studies and their social significance were shown from the perspective of dividing Michael Burawoy's sociological work into policy and public sociology.

Do niedawna miasto jako forma przestrzenna i sposób organizacji życia społecznego pogrążało się w kryzysie. W ostatnim czasie w Polsce coraz częściej jednak mówi się o renesansie miejskości. Jego wyrazem ma być wzrost aktywności ruchów społecznych i znaczenia partycypacji obywatelskiej. Przedmiotem artykułu jest rola, jaką w polityce miejskiej mogą odgrywać konsultacje społeczne dotyczące planowania przestrzennego. Na podstawie analizy przypadku konsultacji prowadzonych aktywnymi, nowatorskimi metodami rekonstruowany jest potencjał takich świadomych interwencji socjologicznych w wyprowadzaniu wspólnoty miejskiej z kryzysu.
As a form of spatial and social organization, the city has been in deep crisis in the recent years. Nowadays in Poland, we can observe the renaissance of urbanity, as evidenced mostly in the increasing activity of social movements and the growing importance of civic participation. This paper discusses the role public consultation on spatial planning can play in urban policy. The analysis is based on a case study of active and innovative approaches to public consultations carried out during the process. The authors describe the potential of such sociological intervention in solving the crisis of urban communities.

The problems and challenges sociology faces at the beginning of the 21st century are the subject matter of the article. The discipline has to deal with the new themes and problems linked to globalization and supranational phenomena. The question about the future of Polish sociology posed by Piotr Sztompka is the point of departure for the author of this article. She relates to the Ulrich Beck’s idea of cosmopolitanism and the need of a new cosmopolitan sociology. The author demonstrates that the development of a new approach to social analysis is crucial. This new cosmopolitan approach should break away from the traditional method of perceiving social phenomena as confined to nation-state boundaries. The article also addresses the issue of the sociology’ and sociologists’ role in the public sphere of contemporary societies.
Artykuł rekonstruuje niektóre problemy i wyzwania, jakie stoją dziś przed socjologią. Musi ona stawić czoło nowym tematom i problemom, związanym z globalizacją, i przekraczającym granice państwowe zjawiskom. Autorka wychodzi od pytania postawionego przez Piotra Sztompkę o istnienie socjologii polskiej. Nawiązuje do idei kosmopolitycznego świata i potrzeby stworzenia w nim kosmopolitycznej socjologii, jaką postuluje Ulrich Beck. Poka-zuje, że dziś konieczne jest stworzenie nowego podejścia do analizy społeczeństwa, zrywającego z „metodologicznym nacjonalizmem”, ograniczającym się wyłącznie do badania zjawisk w obrębie granic danego kraju. W artykule poruszane są również problemy roli socjologów we współczesnym świecie, w sferze publicznej i mediach.

Refleksja socjologiczna towarzyszyła ćwierćwieczu zmian systemowych w Polsce. Socjologia transformacji, mimo związanych z tym podejściem oczekiwań, nie zaowocowała jednak spójną teorią, zdolną agregować i syntetyzować bogaty dorobek badawczy, jaki powstał w jej ramach. W artykule podejmujemy próbę wyjaśnienia uwarunkowań tych niespełnionych oczekiwań oraz wskazania nowych możliwości akumulacji wiedzy dotyczącej kształtowania się nowego potransformacyjnego ładu zbiorowego w ramach nurtu, który proponujemy określić jako socjologię sfery publicznej. Możliwości rozwoju socjologii sfery publicznej upatrujemy przy tym w rosnącej popularności paradygmatu neoinstytucjonalnego w naukach społecznych.
Sociological reflection has accompanied the quarter-century of systemic changes in Poland. However, despite the expectations associated with the sociology of transformation, that approach has not yielded a coherent and consistent theory capable of aggregating and synthesizing the wealth of research gathered under this frame of reference. This article attempts to elucidate the determinant factors behind those unfulfilled expectations. More significantly, it aims to identify the new possibilities for accrual of knowledge about the formation of a new post-transformative collective order via a new framework which we label the sociology of the public sphere. The possibilities for developing such an approach are discerned in the growing popularity of the neo-institutional paradigm in the social sciences.

The subject of the review is a monograph focusing on looking for the causes and determinants of changes taking place in the education system of sociologists in Poland. In the publication, its author presented the results of theoretical analysis and conducted empirical research. The research is in-depth and consistent in a methodological sense, and the approach to the description, diagnosis and interpretation of the most important thematic problems is balanced. The paper presents the leading trends and dynamics of educating Polish sociologists in a comparative aspect, relating to public and private universities. The cognitive and application values of the monograph are the basis for the search for solutions increasing the importance of sociological education in Poland.

Public safety and public order are a main welfare desirable by man and the entire community, in every epoch and every longitude, parallely has become the constant object of doctrinal inquiries. The specificity of each area of science and many other fields of science, their qualities and the desirable elements made the definition of these values, depending on the discipline of science, which adopted a different shape. Security and public order in the legal sciences are mostly expressed in the matter of substantive administrative law and subsequently also in constitutional law and substantive criminal law. The importance of this issue is evidenced by the creation of a new discipline – the Security Science, dedicated to this subject, by the resolution of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles of 28th January 2011, which discusses the title issue in a multi-threaded and multifaceted manner. The specificity of security, its subjective perception and the state of reality, forces the concept to be analyzed also from the perspective of psychology, sociology and philosophy. On the other hand, for a deeper investigation of this phenomenon, the origin of its development and the formulation of future trends, it is important to examine this phenomenon by the historical instruments.

The article is dedicated to the need to develop a methodological dialogue and closer cooperation among economists and sociologists. It is still more and more necessary not only by cognitive reasons. This cooperation lack makes more difficult an effective implementation of the proposed solutions in the area of social theory to practice. According to the author, this cannot be achieved without the interdisciplinary and problem approach application. The public value space should be taken into account by the contemporary management in a wider extent. Thus becomes useful an introduction to this research area a new socio-economic category − public trust glocalization. It means a combination of globalization and localization, that enables the local communities to participate much more actively in the spatial and cultural systems. The glocalization social engineering use makes that the local institutional solutions development, as well as local innovative processes stimulation, are much easier, and more adapted to specific local conditions.
Artykuł jest poświęcony potrzebie rozwinięcia metodologicznego dialogu oraz bliższej współpracy między ekonomistami i socjologami. Jest to coraz bardziej konieczne, nie tylko ze względów poznawczych. Bez tej współpracy znacznie trudniejsze staje się efektywniejsze wdrażanie proponowanych rozwiązań z obszaru teorii społecznej do praktyki. Zdaniem autorki, nie uda się tego osiągnąć bez zastosowania podejścia interdyscyplinarnego i problemowego. Współczesne zarządzanie w coraz większym stopniu powinno uwzględniać przestrzeń wartości publicznych. W tej sytuacji przydatne staje się wprowadzenie do tego obszaru badawczego nowej kategorii socjoekonomicznej – glokalizacji zaufania publicznego. Oznacza ona połączenie procesów globalizacji i lokalizacji, które umożliwia włączanie się społeczności lokalnych w znacznie szersze układy przestrzenne i kulturowe. Poprzez zastosowanie glokalizacyjnej inżynierii społecznej, znacznie łatwiejszy i bardziej dostosowany do uwarunkowań miejscowych staje się rozwój lokalnych rozwiązań instytucjonalnych, jak również pobudzanie lokalnych procesów innowacyjnych.
