Opis:
Purpose: The article’s purpose is to explain the accounting systems in Polish universities and the challenges that have arisen following 2019’s entry into force of the new Act on Higher education, considering the historical background and traditions of universities in Poland. Methodology/approach: The author uses three research methods: literature analysis, direct observation, and analysis of source documents, such as statutes and the strategies of selected universities. Findings: An overview is presented of the changes in Polish universities in the accounting system that followed the new regulations on higher education entry into force, i.e., from 01/10/2019. Having assessed the development level of this research area as preliminary, the author formulated several conclusions that may have practical implications in the future. Practical implications: The content can be used in creating accounting systems in uni-versities while considering new challenges formulated in the strategies of these units, as well as challenges of a global nature – for instance, the digitalization of business processes or the shift of management awareness in academic communities. Moreover, it can serve as a base to create a set of desirable practices in complex accounting systems for universities. Originality/Value: The article, being a general review of the accounting system used at universities, fills the research gap in the literature of this specific area. It can be an origi-nal contribution to the process of reforming universities in Poland, indicating potential threats based on the history of universities, followed by setting new challenges for these institutions.

There are various strategies for creating brands. One of the branding strategies, i.e. the strategy of creating a brand in the minds of consumers, is the brand alliance, or co-branding. Co-branding is a kind of marketing agreement established to combine several brands. The aim of the article is to present the issue of co-branding and to determine the relationship between loyalty to the brand and the strategy of co-branding on the example of universities. The article is based on the analysis of the subject literature and presents the results of the authors’ original study.

Opis:
Starting from Michael Rendell and his team's "Managing tomorrow's people", this paper sets out to build a possible future of leadership in the European engineering education by taking the students' view on tomorrow's world into consideration. We can ask ourselves if European technical universities, and engineering education in particular. could exist in a Blue, Green and Orange World. How would they look like and how efficient would "corporate" universities be, assuming that the Blue World would prevail in the next 10 years. What should their development strategies be and what labor markets would absorb their graduates? What if universities would be in the Green or Orange World? What leaders should they have then? Starting from these questions we try to construct possible scenarios for a European reality.

Opis:
As early twentieth century Americans vigorously debated U.S. immigration policy and immigrants’ impact on the nation and its culture, leaders of American colleges and universities discussed among themselves the impact of immigrant students and students of immigrant parentage on the nation’s expanding higher education system. Although the development of ethnic and religious quotas in private elite institutions has been well documented, historians have paid relatively little attention to the way faculty and administrators at urban public institutions viewed students from immigrant families and their educational needs. This paper will show that professors and administrators in urban institutions, especially those that received public funding, expressed intense anxiety about students from immigrant homes.

Opis:
Historically, the Caucasus has always been the object of special interest of dominant international actors due to its favourable geographical location. Such interest continues today. Despite the difficulties in the region (internal conflicts, different economic and political environments), the Caucasus countries-Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan-are taking significant steps towards establishing close and solid relations with the European Union (EU), improving the economy, and improving politics. The purpose of this article is to analyse the elements of industry and science cooperation. The university and business cooperation is seen as a very complex field and an important component of the country's innovative ecosystem which has long been the subject of research and analysis. The presented article provides for a study of the innovation ecosystem and its infrastructure in the countries of the Caucasus, and mechanisms for the development of the university and businessm cooperation (UBC) process, which is of particular importance for these countries, which are characterized by very low rates of innovation and competitiveness.

Opis:
After 1945 a number of changes occurred in rural Poland in relation to the education of farmers and their families, and the role of education in the lives of rural residents. First of all, a new group of peasant intelligentsia was formed, coming from the peasant or working-class environment. It was to replace the earlier elites by working in the spirit of socialist ideas and supporting the development of the state. Due to the need to rebuild the country and increase the efficiency of agriculture, educators and agricultural advisors trained in cities were also directed to villages. Pursuant to the implemented education development programs, farmers’ children gained access to schools, and parities were created for them at universities. As a result, there was a greater chance for farmers to send their children to universities, but this required financial capabilities of the family, as well as the belief that the education acquired would mean social advancement. The purpose of the article is to analyze the structure of education and educational opportunities of rural residents during the People’s Republic of Poland.

Opis:
While criticism of management and other authorities might sometimes count as virtuous, it is often taken as a disturbance of business operations. Some people even think that criticism reflects badly on managers, as it supposedly shows that they do not have sufficient control over their employees. As I see it, then, feedback or criticism is framed in a highly ambivalent way: Although criticism is often invited as an opportunity for improvement, it is mostly received as a cause of reputational damage. A straightforward illustration of this fact is the treatment of so-called whistle blowers who might be viewed either as martyrs exposing problems to be addressed or as traitors revealing failings or misconduct. Yet, given the moral and institutional stakes in improving a problematic situation, it is still surprising that a portrayal of criticism as a disturbance is so often successful. So how is it possible to obscure the obvious downsides of shunning criticism? Zooming in on the ambivalent values associated with criticism, I shall argue that administrative hierarchies and distributions of tasks often provide incentives to suppress criticism and, by extension, collective action rooted in criticism of authorities in academia.

Consolidations in the higher education sector have been increasingly implemented in many countries in the past two decades, most often taking the form of integration or federal fusions carried out both between public and private universities. In the Polish higher education sector, operating in the conditions of deepening demographic decline, there is a growing pressure on consolidation processes. The aim of the article is a comparative analysis of objectives, but also methods for conducting university mergers, taking into account the diversity between a group of public and private universities. The conclusions point to similarities and differences between the mergers of public and non-public universities in Poland.

Background: First aid is a critical skill, and knowing how to perform it may ultimately save a person’s life. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the level of first aid knowledge among students from three backgrounds: medicine, science, and the humanities. Material and methods: The authors surveyed a group of 180 fifth-year physiotherapy, geoinformatics, and psychology students, of which there were 60 from each discipline. The authors used an anonymous survey of their own design, composed of open- and closed-ended questions, which included 15 questions about first aid rules. The research was conducted in Wrocław, Poland. Results: Only 60 students (30.33%) had previously had the opportunity to receive first aid training during the course of their studies. An additional 100 students (55.56%) claimed they were familiar with first aid rules. Of the physiotherapy students, 32 (53.3%) declared they would remain calm and composed in an emergency situation, with men claiming they would remain more composed than women. The difference in behaviour turned out to be statistically significant; the value of the chi-square test was 13.74. Students who had had prior first aid training at university were the most familiar with life-saving techniques and claimed they would remain the most composed in an emergency situation (32 students from physiotherapy; 53:3%). Prior to taking the first aid exam, the majority of students (100 respondents; 55.6% of the total) were confident that they would obtain the maximum number of points possible on the test. However, upon completion, they were found to have a medium level of knowledge at 889 points out of 1,500, or 59%. Conclusions: The level of first aid knowledge among university students should be dramatically improved, so they are able to perform first aid with some level of expertise, should the need ever arise. To facilitate this, every university should include first aid classes in their curriculum. First aid techniques should be revised and refreshed every six months.

Intellectual capital is treated as a tool for creating a new type of University. Its strategy should be based on competitiveness and shaping entrepreneurial attitudes among employees. Universities should be focused on continuous development, selfimprovement, modeling new methods of acquiring, using and updating knowledge. The application of the concept based on intellectual capital is to increase the chances for development based on modern principles and form the contemporary model of the University. The aim of the article is to describe the University as a knowledge-based organization and present selected tools used to shape the intellectual capital of these organizations.

In the long run, prestige does play an important role in building a university's brand from the point of view of both management and students, alumni in particular. Prestige is built by the academic staff, programmes of studies, and the learning conditions, to name the most important factors. A programme of studies is a distinctive element that sets a university apart from the competition, and by doing so decides about its competitive advantage. In the context of higher education marketing, it is also important to remember about the already mentioned process of adjusting programmes of studies to the labour market requirements.

For several years, social networking sites are growing in popularity in Poland. That is why, more and more organizations take action known as social media marketing. This also applies to universities. The situation on the market of higher educational services forces universities to enterprising behavior. Just as business organizations, usually universities take actions on Facebook, the most popular social networking site, which is used by nearly 70% of Polish Internet users. The purpose of this article is to analyze and evaluate the activity of Polish universities and their students on Facebook, to compare the activity of public and private universities, and to identify activities that universities should take on this portal. The analysis is based on the author’s own research: exploration of university’s sites (fanpages) on Facebook (conducted from January 2012) and a survey carried out among the students of two Polish universities.
