important words

Opis:
There are various reasons why some words are considered more important than others: first, because they are most frequently used, regardless of what, when, where and to whom is said or written; second, because in the text or a collection of texts they appear considerably more often (statistically) than in other texts (they are keywords); third, because (despite the lack of statistical verification) they are considered to be keywords of particular texts, as they are characteristic of them or imply their meaning; fourth, because they are considered (on a similar principle) to be keywords of particular literary periods or national cultures; fifth, because they were considered to be words of the day, words of the month or words of the year. In this context, a specific, sixth category of words more important than others are banner words, which name what is particularly important for some communities, because it is so valuable and friendly to them, or on the contrary, so disgusting and dangerous. Banner words, in contrast to keywords, “live” rather in language (in consciousness of its bearers) than in texts (although they are exhibited in texts).

The objective of this article will be both the theoretical and the practical analysis of the use of the selected English lexical and function words (to, there, before) by Polish users of English representing different proficiency levels. The practical part, in particular, will concern the use of the afore-mentioned, selected words comprising both categories based on the available corpus of L2 users (PELCRA – PLEC). The first acronym refers to Polish and English Language and Corpora for Research and Applications (PELCRA), which is the result of scientific work of the scholars from the University of Łódź. The other one (PLEC), stands for PELCRA English Learner Corpus (see the Bibliography section below). It is commonly known that learners/ students may demonstrate their awareness and professional knowledge with reference to the basic use and comprehension of words in their primary meaning, namely lexical words. The problems arise when they need to confront their current knowledge and awareness while discovering that some words are ambiguous or polysemous. Hence the idea of such research, the intention of which is to validate the students’ performance when faced with words, which are only seemingly simple and predictable.

The aim of the article is to analyze non-statistic methods of identifying key words (understood as units presenting special importance for a given culture and being a source of knowledge about it). The analyzed criteria of this identi cation are: the presence of the words in the given types of texts and in their speci c parts, undergoing semantic and pragmatic shifts, being a part of phraseo-logical units. The analysis is conducted mainly on the examples extracted form ChronoPress (The Chronological Corpora of Polish Press Texts 1945-1954) from 1945. The e ect of the survey is the evaluation of the abovementioned criteria in terms of their usefulness for identifying key words, followed by a description of the noticed problems and controversies as well as suggestions on finding solutions.

Opis:
In contemporary Polish, there are phrases and winged words that come from films, TV series, songs, the language of politics, advertising, popular TV and radio programmes. Among the well-established expressions from the film and TV series, there are permanent verbal connections derived from the films by S. Bareja. Fixed verbal connections stand out among them: Słuszną linię ma nasza władza, Jak jest zima, to musi być zimno, Narodziła się nowa świecka tradycja, Ile jest cukru w cukrze, Nie wiem, nie znam się, nie orientuję się, zarobiony jestem. These idioms, winged words appear in both canonical and modified form. The usual modifications change or replace parts of the original phrases. Innovation strengthens the invariant. Fixed verbal connections of this type are usually ironic and comic. They often fulfill a ludic or phatic function – their appearance is the sender’s communicative signal addressed to the recipient participating in the same culture which is being created today not only by literature, music, painting and other works of art, but also by films, TV series, television and radio programs and so on.

Behind the meaning of social keywords often there are meanings dependent on time, group and discourse. In a particular usage, these meanings resonate subliminally. These hidden, but sometimes very effective meanings are the subject of the so-called “sub-semantics” and are difficult to record in dictionaries. Against this backdrop, I consider the question of what makes a catchword so catchy based on many examples. Thereby, I focus on so-called “Teflon words” such as “success” which have the ability to drip off any criticism, doubt or common sense like in a Teflon pan. In particular, it is about the question why certain words especially from the fields of consumption, economy and politics have such a highly collective “self-persuasiveness” for certain groups and periods of time. In the attempt to answer these questions I refer to the Polish philosopher of science Ludwik Fleck.

Blanched-Sadri and Woodhouse in 2013 have proven the conjecture of Cassaigne, stating that any pattern with \(m\) distinct variables and of length at least \(2^m\) is avoidable over a ternary alphabet and if the length is at least \(3\cdot 2^{m-1}\) it is avoidable over a binary alphabet. They conjectured that similar theorems are true for partial words – sequences, in which some characters are left “blank”. Using method of entropy compression, we obtain the partial words version of the theorem for ternary words.

A hypothesis has been proposed stating that the Germanic words with the meaning ‘milk’ and ‘to milk’ go back to IE root *mel- ‘to crush, to squash’, ‘to spread, to smear’. This root could have generated two semantic derivatives, namely, ‘to spill; wet, moist’ and ‘to rub, to stroke’ to which the meanings ‘milk’ and ‘to milk’ go back. The Germanic *mel-uk- ‘milk’ might be a compound word, the second component o which *au eg-/ug- has the meaning ‘to increase, to add’.

The different emotional perceptions of reality have created in literature three specific modes: lyric, drama and epic. Epic works correspond more to the prose of life and reflect its presentation in literature, both fictional and aesthetical. It is clamed, that nowadays rage is booming and anger is fashion (Johannes Lehman). Then comes the question how modern authors present these phenomena in their works and how it is perceived. The novel by Daniel Kehlmann “F” (2013) could be seen as a material for the possible explanations of the emotion “anger” in relation to the cultural-historical background of modern time. The examples analyzed indicate that the rage of the protagonists comes from the inadequacy of solving their sexual, intellectual, economic, artistic and religious problems and is mostly named but not described.

Owing to such translational solutions, the translated sentences evoke a dif- ferent set of associations in the target language. The sentences with the omitted marker of epistemic modality constitute a great number of examples in English.

Opis:
The text entitled Il testamento segreto romano e il Senatoconsulto Neroniano [“The Secret Testament in Rome and the Neronian Senatoconsultum”] is the result of a report I gave during the X Ionian-Polish Conference on the topic “Il segreto nei sistemi giuridici” [“The secret in legal systems”], held in Warsaw at Uczelnia Lazarskego University on 31 May 2017. Those who study the history of Roman law know that any examination of facts, situations and statements on the subject of ‘secrecy’ is a preliminary reminder that this right was originally in penetralibus pontificum repositum. The verb penetrate and those penetralia behind which the oldest part of the Roman rituals and of which the penetralia pontificum play the role that we know is hidden, through the narration of Tito Livio, belong to the purest and most essential semantics of secrecy. In the memory of the late-republican culture the wisdom of the popes was linked above all to the custody of the mos, of the religious and social customs of the ancestors. In the absence of writing, orality played a constitutive role, in the sense that it gave rise to a juridical consequence, a juridical constraint. Words pronounced in a certain way and specific gestures, served to trigger contact with the divine and with the ius. Hence the rigid control exercised consciously by the popes on the form of the words pronounced, on their sequence, on the rhythm of language. Only extremely skilled interpreters such as lawyers-priests were able to elaborate and manipulate them. The monopoly of knowledge of the pontiffs started to be shaken by the written editorship of the law of the Twelve Tables. But the much harsher blow was inflicted by the publication of the calendars and secret formulas of the Pontiffs by Gnaeus Flavius, a freed scribe of Appius Claudius the Blind (A. 304 BC.). A final step, this decisive time was taken by Tiberio Coruncanio, the first plebeian who came to the office of maximum pontiff, who removed the original secrecy from the activity of the pontiffs. From that moment on, the popes’ responses had to be given in public and can no longer be secret.

This article is the second and the last part of a series dedicated to the characteristics of a description of Christ’s seven words uttered on the cross as accounted in Old Polish biblical and apocryphal narrations. In part one, I focus on the origin of the words, the characteristics of Old Polish texts containing them. I highlight the most important differences in the narration of the specific fragments of Old Polish Passions of Jesus. Part two is entirely dedicated to the language of the fragments of Old Polish texts on Christ’s seven words uttered on the cross (ŻPJK, SCh and RD). First, I present the enumeration schemes in each apocrypha. They are strictly related to the tradition of religious instruction and teaching and are an attempt at sorting out the material. The article presents also the various ways in which Christ’s specific words are called. The regular word-forming structure of the modifiers affects the rhythmic form of the specific fragments of texts. Finally, I show how quotations from Christ were introduced into each apocrypha: how the utterances’ modal frame was shaped and what verbs of speech were used. It turns out that in each historic text, Christ’s words were treated differently: in the SCh, they were described most extensively and in the RD – least extensively but it is the RD where the enumerations are most precise with respect to the syntax, perhaps because the specific parts are at the smallest distance from each other. Christ’s seven words on the cross are least structured in the ŻPJK.
