Opis:
The Baltic is a stratified sea. The upper layer is under the influence of atmospheric and terrestial factors. The mechanisms of these external factors on the surficial and subsurface water layer are well recognised but the vertical exchange in the water body is still not sufficiently investigated. Field measurements at sea are time consuming and expensive. A model of the Baltic Sea distributed to and accessible by institutions investigating the Baltic Sea is advantageous because of easier exchange modelled data. The modelling, especially of the surface layer is important due to the fact that outside the coastal zone continuous measurements of physical parameters is difficult. The comparison between measured in situ and modelled data serves as a tool for the corrections to HIROMB resulting in better approximation of real phenomena occurring in the Baltic Sea. Temperature and salinity values obtained on board rlv Baltica during the POLRODEX'97 expetriment were compared with modelled values. The analysis showed significant differences between in situ measurements and obtained from the HIROMB model.

Opis:
Methodical questions of monitoring of water status in soil, cereals grain and wood are discused ( where monitoring is understood as registration of time and spatial variability of selected properties). Amount of viariables which is necessary in order to determine water status depends on the complexion of the considered phenomena and is, so far, the matter of arbitrary choice. In most practical cases the water status is expressed only by moisture of the considered material ( like the building timber). In practical terms, two variables suffice to express water status in cereal grain: moisture and temperature. To describe water status in the soil not less then five variables are needed: amount of water (the soil moisture) soil water potential, salinity, oxygenation and temperature. The only sensors that can be integrated in modern data acquisition system must be read electrically. Therefore electroresistance and electrocapacitance methods were considered. Dielectric sensors were recognized as the proper choice.Soil is a complex material having instable characteristics. For this reason it is the most difficult task to monitor soil water status, particularly to determine the soil moisture. Therefore it has been assumed that measuring methods verified for the soil will be also suitable for other, less complex materials. Thus, monitoring of soil water status was mainly discussed. Special attention was focused to the time domain reflectometry, TDR, as the semi selective method for the soil moisture and salinity determination.

Acoustic measurements were conducted at different seasons in the last five years at a fixed point of the Baltic Sea at a frequency 30 kHzcon currently with temperature and salinity sampling. Echosounding records were used to determine the seasonal and diurnal migration patterns of scattering layers in accordance with thermohaline conditions. Different seasonal patterns of nocturnal aggregations of organisms dependent on the temperature gradient in the thermocline were found. This paper illustrates the diurnal distributions of sound scattering layers and analyses the way they are linked to the physical structure of the water.

Cd and Pb concentrations were determined in samples of water (for both dissolved and suspended particulate matter) and surface sediments (total and <63 μm fractions).Or ganic matter was analysed in the sediments, while temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the estuarine water The metal concentrations determined in this study were: 1.47 ± 1.08 μg Cd g−1 and 14.68 ± 4.31 μg Pb g−1 in surface sediments; 2.21 ± 1.33 μg Cd g−1 and 25.70 ± 7.09 μg Pb g−1 in the <63 μm sediment fraction; 0.18 ± 0.11 μg Cd g−1 and below the analytical detection limit of Pb in suspended particulate matter. Furthermore, dissolved Cd and Pb were lower than the norms for marine and estuarine waters (2 μg dm−3 for Cd and 5 μg dm−3 for Pb, E.P.A.). Simultaneously, the effects of Cd and Pb were studied on recently hatched larvae of Ch. granulata, through 96-hour semi-static acute assays.Via bility was the criterion assessed in the assays.LC 50 (96 h) for Cd was 46.43 μg dm−3 (36.92 − 56.34 μg dm−3), whilst that for Pb was 1. 0 mg dm−3 (0.79 − 1.23 mg dm−3), which demonstrates that Cd is more toxic towards larvae.F inally, both LC50 values determined for Cd and Pb were higher than the corresponding metal concentrations measured in the Bah´ıa Blanca environment.

A total of 439 measurements of downward ultraviolet irradiance in North European coastal waters have been analysed, half of which have been taken from other authors. The depths Z(10%) where the irradiance is reduced to 10% of its surface value vary by one order of magnitude in the open coastal waters,b oth at wavelengths of 310 nm (0.3–10.4 m) and 380 nm (1.2–13.0 m). In the fjords and estuaries the depth ranges are reduced to 0.08–6.1 m at 310 nm and 0.18–7.7 m at 380 nm. Mixing with saline ocean waters can increase these light penetration depths to more than 10 m,while river water can reduce them to a few centimetres.

Opis:
The water masses in Fram Strait have been analyzed on the basis of hydrographic casts taken in summer 1984 during the MIZEX 84 experiment. In particular, θ − S diagrams for 16 areas, each 5◦ in longitude and 1◦ in latitude, covering the strait from 77◦N to 81◦ N are used to characterize the water masses and discuss their possible origin. Near the surface, the East Greenland Polar Front clearly separates the lighter, cold and fresh Polar Water (PW) from the heavier, warm and saline Atlantic Water (AW). In the upper ocean, the data show a large spreading of the temperature maximum in the θ − S space associated with different modes of the AW recirculating southward below the PW. Two geographically distinct salinity minima are found in the intermediate layer below the AW. The denser one, in the Boreas Basin, is a feature typical of the Arctic Intermediate Water (AIW) formed by winter convection to the south of the strait, while the lighter one is sandwiched in the Arctic Ocean outflow between the AW layer and the Upper Polar Deep Water (UPDW) characterized by a downward salinity increase. In the deep layer, two salinity maxima are present. The shallower (and warmer) one, associated with the Canadian Basin Deep Water (CBDW), appears all along the East Greenland Slope. A similar but weaker maximum is also found in the southeastern part of the strait. This maximum is perhaps a remnant of the maximum in the East Greenland Current after it has been recirculated back to the strait around the cyclonic gyres of the Nordic Seas. The deeper one appears typically as a near-bottom salinity jump characteristic of the Eurasian Basin Deep Water (EBDW). The jump is found in two distinct areas of the strait, to the north-west in the Lena Trough and to the south-east in the rift valley of the Knipovich Ridge. The maximum in the former area should have been advected from the Arctic Ocean below the CBDW, while the maximum in the latter area might have originated from haline convection on the adjacent shelves. Some EBDW is trapped in the Molloy Deep over a denser water with salinity decreasing down to the bottom and temperature in the range of the Greenland Sea Deep Water (GSDW).

Opis:
Problem zasolonych wód, odprowadzanych z tych kopalń, wymaga więc efektywnego i realistycznego rozwiązania. W artykule przedstawiono wielowariantową analizę, realnych ekonomicznie i technicznie, opcji ograniczenia negatywnego wpływu zrzutu słonych wód kopalnianych na rzeki. Analizowano następujące opcje: - działania górniczo-geologiczne prowadzone w kopalniach GSW S.A. i KWK Budryk, - możliwość magazynowania wód słonych w KWK Dębieńsko i ich zrzut w warunkach wysokich przepływów w rzekach, - ewentualną likwidację kopalń zrzucających słone wody do odbiorników powierzchniowych, - możliwości wtłaczania słonych wód do górotworu, - połączenie kopalń kolektorem i przesył wód do rzeki Odry w odpowiednim przekroju - hydrotechniczna metoda ochrony rzeki Bierawki, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" bez dodatkowych inwestycji usprawniających, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" uzupełnionego o odzysk soli z ługów pokrystalizacyjnych, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" uzupełnionego o odzysk soli z ługów pokrystalizacyjnych wraz z odzyskiem bromu i jodu.
The Bierawka river, a right-bank tributary of the Oder river, is one of the most salined rivers in Upper Silesia. Am essential impact on its salinity level have the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GSW S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery. The problem of salined wasters, discharged from these mines, requires thus an efficient and realistic solution. The publication presents a multi-variant analysis of reduction options of the negative impact of discharge of salt mine waters into rivers, real from the view-point of economics and technology. The following options were analysed: - rnining and geological activities conducted in the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GWS S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery, - possibility to storage salty wasters from "Dębieńsko" Colliery and their discharge in conditions of high flows in rivers, - possible closure of mines discharging salty waters into surface receivers, - possibilities of injection of salty waters to the rock mass, - connection of mines by means of a collector and transmission of waters of Oder river in the suitable cross-section - hydrotechnical method of Bierawka river protection, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant without additional improving investments, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant supplemented by salt recovery from post-crystallsation lyes, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant supplemented by salt recovery from post-crystallsation lyes along with bromine and iodine recovery. In order to assess the usefulness of individual solutions, an analysis of strong and weak sides as well as chances and hazards was carried out (SWOT analysis). It has been ascertained, that the optimum solution, from the view-point of economics and environmental protection, is: - continuation and extension of the scope of use of mining and geological methods reducing the inflow of salty waters to mine workings (the so-called reduction of inflows "at the source") in the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GSW S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery, - desalination of all brines from mines: "Knurów", "Budryk", "Szczyglowice" and "Dębieńsko" (under closure procedure) in the modernised Desalination Plant "Dębieńsko", enabling additional salt recovery from partial utilisation of post-crystallsation lyes. Because the activity of the Desalination Plant significantly reduces the discharge of the chloride and sulfate loads into the Bierawka river and has essential influence on the water purity state in this river, a detailed analysis of work impact of the Desalination Plant on the Bierawka and Oder water quality has been performed, using different solutions. Mamtaining of the Desalination Plant in operation and its development will allow a durable elimination of chlorine and sulfate loads from salty mine waters; then the salinity of the Bierawka river at the estuary to the Oder river will be contained within limits admissible in relation to waters of third class purity.

Opis:
The paper describes the hydrographic-hydrochemical development in the eastern Gotland Basin between the major saltwater inflows into the Baltic Sea in 1993 and 2003. This period is characterised by only low inflow activity. The most important hydrographic events were the effects of the very strong inflow in 1993 and the weak inflows in 1993/1994 and 1997. The 1993/1994 inflows led to deep-water renewal, a steep fall in deep-water temperatures, and increasing salinity. The effects of the inflow of very warm, saline and oxygen-rich water in autumn 1997 were observed in the deep water in 1998, resulting in temperatures rising to 7◦C. The recent renewal in spring 2003 is reflected in the decreasing temperature, higher salinity and improved ventilation of the bottom water. Changes in the redox conditions exert a considerable influence on the nutrient distribution. During stagnation periods, there is enrichment of phosphate and ammonium, while nitrate is absent. Thus, around 31 μmol l−1 ammonium and 7 μmol l−1 phosphate were measured prior to the water renewal in 2003. Deepwater ventilation results in lower phosphate concentrations of around 2 μmol l−1, the nitrification of ammonium and the occurrence of nitrate. For the observation period, an estimate of nutrients stored in the deep water was done for the eastern Gotland Basin. During the recent stagnation period, there was an increase of up to 150% in the phosphate pool below the halocline, whereas the pool of inorganic nitrogen compounds decreased to 80% compared with 1992 when the previous stagnation period had ended. Under specific circumstances, these unbalanced nutrients can be made available to the upper water layers and can induce large-scale blooms of algae, especially of cyanobacteria.

Opis:
A medium-sized inflow (about 200 km3 according to IOW data, – personal communication) of saline water into the southern Baltic Sea occurred during January 2003. Unlike any previously observed inflow, this one brought very cold water, of temperatures around 1–2◦C and less. Since the temperature of the deep water in the southern Baltic before the inflow was exceptionally high (11–12◦C), the inflowing waters produced dramatic changes and a steep temperature gradient. The movement of the inflowing waters through the deep basins and channels of the Baltic Sea from the Arkona Basin to the Gdańsk Deep during next 4–8 months is described. Frequent mesoscale structures and intensive mixing followed the eastward transport of the inflow water, particularly in the Bornholm Deep and Słupsk Furrow. The present paper is based on data collected during of 6 cruises r/v ‘Oceania’ between December 2002 and August 2003. The last cruise in August took place in order to assess the long-term consequences of the inflow.

Opis:
From 1994 to 1996 changes in the concentrations of dissolved mono- (MCHO) and total dissolved polysaccharides (TCHO) as well as the activities of carbohydratedegrading enzymes (α- and β-glucosidase, glucosaminidase) were investigated during mixing of water from the River Odra and the open Pomeranian Bight. This study addresses the question of whether their distribution was a result of physical dilution alone or if biological interactions were detectable. Within the salinity gradient, ranging from 1.9 to 7.8 PSU, TCHO declined from 13.2 μmol l−1 near the Świna mouth to 2.8 μmol l−1 after mixing. Concentrations of MCHO decreased from 3.4 μmol l−1 to 1.1 μmol l−1 but its distribution pattern varied more between summer and autumn than that of TCHO. The hydrolysis rate (Hr) by glucosidase and glucosaminidase activities was reduced from 13.9% h−1 to 0.3% h−1 and 9.9% h−1 to 0.2% h−1, respectively, and correlated with the uptake rate of glucose (To) by bacteria. In summer, the To/Hr ratio increased from about 1.2 to 29.4, mainly because of stronger decreases in Hr than in To. It was shown that the relationship between enzymatic release and uptake of carbohydrates influences the concentration of dissolved carbohydrates within the salinity gradient. Most probably, the decrease in carbohydrate-degrading enzymes is the result of reduced substrate stimulation and the lower number of particle-associated bacteria.
