Opis:
A total of 439 measurements of downward ultraviolet irradiance in North European coastal waters have been analysed, half of which have been taken from other authors. The depths Z(10%) where the irradiance is reduced to 10% of its surface value vary by one order of magnitude in the open coastal waters,b oth at wavelengths of 310 nm (0.3–10.4 m) and 380 nm (1.2–13.0 m). In the fjords and estuaries the depth ranges are reduced to 0.08–6.1 m at 310 nm and 0.18–7.7 m at 380 nm. Mixing with saline ocean waters can increase these light penetration depths to more than 10 m,while river water can reduce them to a few centimetres.

Opis:
High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.

Relationships between the zooplankton community andv arious environmental factors (salinity, temperature, sampling depth and bottom depth) were established in the European Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) using multivariate statistics. Three main zooplankton communities were identified: an Atlantic Shallow Community (AtSC), an Arctic Shallow Community (ArSC) anda Deep Water Community (DWC). All species belonging to AtSC andArSC were pooledandtheir relative abundances in the total zooplankton calculated with respect to a particular layer (surface, midan dd eep strata), regions (the Barents Sea, Fram Strait andt he waters off northern Svalbard), years (1999 or 2003) and seasons (spring or autumn). Mapping of the proportions of Arctic andA tlantic species ledto the conclusion that zooplankton from the MIZs do not exactly follow complementary water masses, although the general pattern of AtSC and ArSC dominance accords with the physical oceanography of the study area (AtW and ArW respectively). The mid layer proved to be a better predictor of mesozooplankton distribution than the unstable conditions near the surface.

Opis:
In the discussion of water quality control, the first and most effective parameter that affects other variables and water quality parameters is the temperature situation and water temperature parameters that control many ecological and chemical processes in reservoirs. Additionally, one of the most important quality parameters studied in the quality of water resources of dams and reservoirs is the study of water quality in terms of salinity. The salinity of the reservoirs is primarily due to the rivers leading into them. The control of error in the reservoirs is always considered because the outlet water of the reservoirs, depending on the type of consumption, should always be standard in terms of salinity. Therefore, in this study, using the available statistics, the Ce-Qual-W2 two-dimensional model was used to simulate the heat and salinity layering of the Latyan Dam reservoir. The results showed that with warming and shifting from spring to late summer, the slope of temperature changes at depth increases and thermal layering intensifies, and a severe temperature difference occurs at depth. The results of sensitivity analysis also showed that by decreasing the wind shear coefficient (WSC), the reservoir water temperature increases, so that by increasing or decreasing the value of this coefficient by 0.4, the average water temperature by 0.56°C changes inversely, and the results also show that by increasing or decreasing the value of the shade coefficient by 0.85, the average water temperature changes by about 7.62°C, directly.

Opis:
Scarcity of fresh water resources is the major constraint for agricultural development in Iran as in many other regions with arid and semi-arid climate. With the pressure on fresh water resources, the use of un-conventional water resources including brackish, saline and sewage water has received greater attentions in recent years. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of farmers' practices using saline groundwater on wheat yield and soil salinity in a Mediterranean climate of Fars province in southern Iran. The study was carried out in several commercial wheat production regions for two years. Chemical analysis of irrigation waters, volume of applied irrigation water, electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (ECe) and yield were measured in each field. General information on agronomic practices was also collected using a questionnaire. Results demonstrate that waters with salinities higher than what has been classified as “suitable for irrigation” are being used for the production of wheat crop. Analysis of wheat yield response to saline irrigation water showed that for water salinities up to 10.7 mS∙cm–1 (threshold value) variation in yield was relatively minor, above which wheat yield decreased at a greater rate. Root zone salinity profiles showed the effect of winter rainfall in reducing soil salinity. It is concluded that although acceptable yields are obtained with some of the highly brackish waters, over application of these waters would threaten the sustainability of crop production in the region.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to determine changes in salinity and water level of the Lake Jamno, which occurred as a result of the construction of the storm gate. It is very important aspect, as in the case of coastal lakes rather seeks to “open” object on the direct impact of the sea, and not his “closing”. Of course there are many examples in the world to create such hydrotechnical building, the aim of which is to prevent the phenomenon of flooding from the sea. Often it is the result of climate change causing an increase in the number of observed extreme phenomena, example of which are the storm gates in the Thames. Therefore, you should always think about the meaning of the creation of such structures and their subsequent impact on the biotic and abiotic environment. Also be sure to with great care to prepare a draft of such a construction that does not cause more losses than benefits. The study consisted primarily of a review of source materials and fieldwork prior to the construction of a storm barrier (2002-2008) and following the construction of the storm barrier (2015). Fieldwork included hydrographic surveys and water sampling for laboratory analysis. The most important source of information on changes following the construction of the storm barrier was the online source: www.hydrowskaz.pl. The website included data on water levels and specific conductivity for Lake Jamno and the Jamno Canal. The main and most readily observable outcome of the construction of a storm barrier has been a change in water quality in Lake Jamno. This is especially true in the case of key indicators related to marine water including conductivity, whose values changed from brackish-water-type to freshwater-type. A second outcome of the construction of the storm barrier was a change in the water level fluctuation range for Lake Jamno. The fluctuation range has now been reduced by 30 to 40 cm.

Opis:
Three pot experiments were performed on cucumber, maize, soybean and wheat plants to investigate the effects of various substrate types, namely pumice, arenosol and chernozem soil (Exp. 1), of substrate salinity (Exp. 2) and of soil water content (SWC; Exp. 3) on the electrical capacitance measured in root-soil systems. The data were evaluated according to the basic principle of the two-dielectric capacitor model. Statistical analysis indicated that the capacitance measured in root-soil systems was determined by the capacitance of the root system for each combination of plant species and substrate. Furthermore, the results showed that substrate impedance had a negligible influence on the capacitance measured in root-soil systems. Substrate salinity had no direct effect on capacitance measured in root-soil systems, but salt-induced physicochemical changes in plant tissues could have influenced its dielectric properties. Capacitance measured in rootsoil systems increased exponentially with soil water content (it ranged from 10 to 48 v/v %), indicating that the measured capacitance was more sensitive to variability in moisture content at high rather than at low water saturation levels. This is not consistent with the general consensus that the capacitance method is unreliable in dry soil and should be used at soil water content close to field capacity. The present results will contribute to the more effective application of the root capacitance technique.

The paper presents change of water quality within Vistula River in the city of Warsaw. Water samples for analysis were taken from four different measurement points in the period from February to June 2016. Based on the results of laboratory studies it was demonstrated that the Vistula River in Warsaw is exposed to the input of pollutants contributing to increase the salinity, especially in winter and early spring. The concentration of both chlorides and sulphates were highest in February and was decreasing in subsequent months of the year. At the same time it has been shown that during the entire study period the concentration of Cl– ion exceeded the limit values for water quality II class in Poland. While the SO4 2– concentrations in water samples taken in the winter months (February-March) exceeded the limit values for the second quality class, in April, it was within the acceptable range for II class water quality, and in May and June does not exceed the value referred to as standard for I class of water quality. Based on the analysis of indicators of nutrients (N-NH4 , N-NO3 , Ptot.) it was found that the Vistula is not exposed to eutrophication due to their low concentration, which indicates a very good water quality. At the same time permanganate index (CODMn) indicates a low organic load of Vistula.

Opis:
Eutrophication-related problems in the Western Harbour ofA lexandria were studied monthly from April 1999 to March 2000. Variation in salinity appeared to be the key to all changes in water quality and plankton abundance in the harbour. Both at the surface and near the bottom the salinity was lower (annual average: 35.1 and 38.3 PSU respectively) than in the open sea (39 PSU). Dissolved oxygen levels indicated poor aeration conditions along the water column (2.3–3.98 mg l−1). Average pH values were approximately similar in the two layers (8.1 and 8 respectively) but exhibited different ranges ofv ariations. Nutrient salts varied widely, often occurring in high concentrations, with ranges of 0.12–5.7 and 0.06–2.6 μM at the surface and the bottom respectively for phosphate, 0.21–20.46 and 0.25–18.12 μM for nitrate, 0.29–3.3 and 0.23–1.66 μM f or nitrite, 0.56–57.46 and 2.32–43.73 μM for ammonia and 0.3–36.3 and 0.48–38.4 μM for silicate. As a result ofn utrient enrichment, phytoplankton growth was very intensive, reflected by an abnormally high concentration ofc hlorophyll a (annual average: 33.82 μg l−1). At the same time the death ofl arge numbers ofp hytoplankton cells could be inferred from the relatively large amount of phaeopigment (annual average: 10.39 μg l−1). The high levels ofn utrient salts and phytoplankton biomass together serve as a good indicator ofhig h eutrophication levels in the Western Harbour throughout the year. These conditions clearly affected the zooplankton stock, which varied between 5.8–93.6×103 indiv. m−3, although for most of the time values remained at a low level (annual average: 26 728 indiv. m−3).
