    In the article I have examined the way in which the American West of 1863–1906 was shown in the Warsaw magazine “Wędrowiec”. I have mainly focused on articles published from the late 1870s to the year 1906, when the last issue of the weekly appeared. I have chosen this specific magazine, because it specialized in issues concerning geography and travel. Throughout the period when “Wędrowiec” was published, the subject of the American West of 1863–1906 appeared in over 150 issues. Thus, one may risk a statement that the subject was quite popular with the readers. It is also to be stressed that no other region of the USA was given so much attention as the West. The magazine published the highest number of articles in the 1870s and 1880s. In the 1890s and at the beginning of the twentieth century the subject appeared only sporadically, which was due to both the change in the nature of the magazine and smaller interest of the readers in the United States. The subject of the American West, complex and exotic, was very attractive. However, with time and with the progress in the colonization process, it was difficult to find topics which had not been discussed up till then. Despite that, all major changes taking place in this region were duly observed. Also regions which earlier had not caused much interest among readers started to be reported on. The readers could also observe changes in the image of the Far West. Articles appearing in “Wędrowiec” throughout the period it was published dealt mainly with: Indians, Mormons and the Chinese. Other inhabitants of this area did not attract so much attention.

    Opis:
    One of the most important contemporary experiences of European societies is undoubtedly the migration crisis. The resulting social fears of ‘strangers,’ which have been activated, show how important the archetypical ‘other-stranger’ pattern still is, and that it can be treated as an example of an ‘anthropological constant.’ The aim of the article is to try to look at the painting “The Wayfarer” by Hieronymus Bosch as an illustration of the archetypical ‘other-stranger’ pattern. It seems that such a reading of this work, rich in symbolic content, on the one hand perfectly justifies the thesis of the archetypical sources of contemporary attitudes towards ‘strangers’ and, on the other hand, allows one to better understand and explain the current reactions and behaviors of Europeans. This becomes particularly evident when juxtaposing the image of Hieronymus Bosch with the contemporary media images of migrants.
    Jednym z najważniejszych współczesnych doświadczeń społeczeństw europejskich jest niewątpliwie kryzys migracyjny. Wywołane przez niego społeczne obawy wobec przybyszów pokazują, jak ważny jest wciąż archetypowy wzór „obcego-innego” i że może on być traktowany jako przykład „stałej antropologicznej”. Celem artykułu jest próba spojrzenia na obraz „Wędrowiec” Hieronima Boscha jak na ilustrację archetypowego wzoru „obcego-innego”. Wydaje się, że takie odczytanie tego dzieła, bardzo bogatego w treści symboliczne, z jednej strony doskonale uzasadnia tezę o archetypowych źródłach współczesnych postaw wobec „obcych”, z drugiej natomiast strony pozwala lepiej zrozumieć i wyjaśnić współczesne reakcje i zachowania Europejczyków. Staje się to szczególnie widoczne, gdy zestawimy obraz Hieronima Boscha ze współczesnymi medialnymi obrazami migrantów.

    W artykule interesuje mnie etap artystycznych poszukiwań Tadeusza Kantora po 1975 r. – Teatr Śmierci. Galeria postaci w Teatrze Śmierci jest wielce osobliwa. Stanowi zbiór fi gur hybrydycznych, które można badać w kontekście estetyki groteski i makabreski. W szkicu dokonuję analizy jednej spośród nich – tajemniczej i niejednoznacznej postaci sprzątaczki „wędrującej” przez teatr i pisma Kantora (od Umarłej klasy do Dziś są moje urodziny). Szkic jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, kim/czym jest ta postać wędrowna dla projektu artystycznego Kantora i jak można tę fi gurę interpretować.
    The article focuses on Tadeusz Kantor’s artistic exploration from 1975 – the Theatre of Death. Kantor’s gallery of characters is very particular and peculiar. His characters are rather strange fi gures (e.g. Kantor’s bio-objects or mannequins). It is possible to analyse these objects through the prism of the aesthetic of the grotesque. This article att empts to describe the fi gure of a Charwoman – one of the most mysterious characters in Kantor’s oeuvre. This character is present in every Theatre of Death spectacle (starting with The Dead Class, then Wielopole, Wielopole, Let the Artists Die, I Shall Never Return to Today Is My Birthday). This curious fi gure is a kind of wanderer. What/Who is it exactly? How should we talk about this peculiar character, who oscillates between the world of the Living and the Dead? How shoud we understand its position in Kantor’s artistic project? This paper endeavours to fi nd the answers.

    The illustrated weekly Wędrowiec (The Wanderer), published in 1863–1906, certainly lived up to its programmatic title and published a great deal of material on geography, history of culture and travels abroad. This article discusses the texts that dealt with the ancient history of the Middle East.
    Tygodnik ilustrowany „Wędrowiec” (1863–1906) zgodnie z tytułem i deklaracją programową poświęcał na swoich łamach wiele miejsca geografii, dziejom kultury, opisom obcych krajów i relacjom podróżniczym. Artykuł omawia publikowane w tym czasopiśmie teksty odnoszące się do zagadnień starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu.
