Opis:
Archeological work in the 2012 and 2013 seasons in Jiyeh (Porphyreon), which lies on the Phoenician coast north of ancient Sidon, was focused on reconstructing the history of settlement on the site. At least three phases were identified and dated to the Iron Age II, the Persian– Hellenistic–Roman period and late antiquity. The early dating of the functioning of the Christian basilica to the 4th–5th century AD was also confirmed in trial pits. The complex and unusual sewage installation discharging rainwater from the roofs and streets of the 5th-century settlement contributed important data for studies of late antique domestic architecture in the region.

W pracy będą przedstawione propozycje różnych dróg rozwoju rolnictwa i terenów wiejskich.

The survey which was supposed to provide information on popularity of rural holiday destinations among the academic youth has revealed that rural areas are most willingly visited by students who come from cities (49.3%). The locations most frequently chosen by the respondents included: the Baltic coast, Helski Peninsula, Kujawy and Kaszuby Region. It was also observed that male students are more willing than female students to spend holidays outside towns (54.6%). The recreational activities indicated by the respondents who chose to spend their free time in the village were mainly cycling and hiking (34.3% vs 28.4%). Another form of activity was sightseeing (32.3%), and kayaking (30.4%). People who declared to have spent their holiday time in the country were more often involved in sailing (mainly men - 66.6%) and rowing (mainly women - 54.5%) sunbathing and diving (7.8%) than those who chose to go to the city. Students are regarded to be an active and important group of tourists who tend to visit the village even two times a year and stay there for longer periods of time (even 8 – 14 days). It is likely that trips to regions characterized by peace, quietness and clean air will increase among the analyzed group of tourists.

The aim of this article is to formulate guidelines for locating benches in rural public spaces. It is a summary of the results of a qualitative research involving 67 users of urban benches, conducted with the application of individual in-depth interviews, and the results of a literature review on the manner in which rural public spaces are equipped. The obtained results pertain to the use of benches in rural public spaces in the context of their integration and semantic potential (symbolic values). The conclusions are presented in the form of general guidelines. Public consultation should be an important element in deciding how to equip rural common space with benches. Local communities ought to be included in the decision-making process, from the stage of the assumptions of the design concepts to the stage of realization. It is advisable to adjust the form of benches, their number, orientation and location to the nature of public space and expectations of their future users. At the same time, the overall structure of public space and its main functions should be taken into account. Properly selected and placed benches can support the process of community structuring and may be a part of the equipment of public space which integrates the local community. Locating benches opposite each other or in the shape of the letter L or C promotes integration. Designing space according to the safe space standards can be a solution for sites conducive to drinking alcohol. Locating benches in the vicinity of streets, at the fence bypass, is a traditional way. Benches with atypical forms or functions located in common areas may contribute to the extraction or strengthening of the local identity.

With respect to space, local authorities may deploy diverse instruments designed to promote the engagement of local communities in the spatial planning and decision-making process. The Village (Polish: Sołecki) Fund, established for rural and urban-rural communes, is one of the ways for achieving this goal. Resources from the Village Fund may be used for, e.g. spatial planning, which is one of a commune’s own tasks. The activities related to the Village Fund have triggered studies focused on the units which run such funds and, on the amounts, earmarked for goals pertaining to spatial planning. On top of that, the spatial distribution of communes delivering such tasks has also been assessed. The analyses covered statistics as well as budget queries in communes which allocated funds for activities connected with spatial planning.

Today the rural home landscape is filled with different types of content imprinted by the past centuries. The respect for material and non-material values through inherited cultural home landscapes manifest in understanding their essence. Remaining home landscape typical for the certain region and different from other lands are coming out of the tradition which is called 'genius loci' and is of non-material value. Our contemporary efforts to protect the significative layer of culture landscape cannot be limited only to protect its heritage forms but also its meaning of sense. That is a very significant task to give back the importance of the contents in the contemporary shaping process of the home landscape. Non-material values are eternal and their protection is the duty of modern societies. When those meanings are not fully valued or unconscious there's the duty for intellectual elites - architects and urban/landscape planners to act for changing this position. Prevention with protection and a meaningful layer of home landscape enrichment could not only bring emotional and intellectual value and satisfaction but real material benefits. Show-places and attractiveness improvement of certain places through significant modern architecture placement could be one of the methods of home landscape management influenced for quality of citizens' life. We cannot refuse leaving our 'footprints' if we cannot accept 'noone-land'. That processes has to be steered to a certain degree to imprint the most important points for local society. The architects equipped with the tools that help them to find important meanings in home architecture and cultural landscape would find the meaning of those values for protection and preservation because this type of information has to be as important as the technical, historical, ecological and sociological knowledge. The question is what the targets and directions in Polish rural landscape architecture are, for instance at the regeneration process. Surely it is not the uncritical respect for tradition, not only reservation protection and unrestricted architectural expression.

Disintegration of villages was the important process of social change in Poland during the Century of 1918-2018 years. It run nor in the linear nor in the one directed manner however. The process of disintegration of rural community was not universal one on the territory of Poland. It also has no unilateral effects during the period of 1918-2018. The consolidation, connection, affiliation of economic, social and cultural domain of the State were the most characteristic trends of the period of the twenty years before of the Second World War. The rapid changes in the earlier process of integration of rural social community took over during The Second World War and next years implemented by new policy in Poland after 1945 year. The new rules of transformation intensify the discussion connected with problems of village and agriculture after 1989 year. Slowly, step by step, there were come into sight the new symptoms of the reintegration process of local village community after 30 years of transformation.

Opis:
The renewal of the village is an innovational concept of development of rural areas which occurred in German speaking countries at the turn of 70s and 80s as a reaction to the then increasing crisis in rural areas. The basis for this current of rural area development is belief that modernization of villages according to urban pattern and agriculture based on industrial production methods do not solve village problems but on the contrary deepen them. There is a future in front of it if its specific is considered in the approach to the development. It determines competition growth and successful chances in market conditions. Renewal of the village became a way of transforming an agricultural village into a post-agricultural one, with full preservation and development of its current values. The village remained itself keeping its attractiveness avoiding the "pseudo-city" syndrome which touched Polish villages in the way which makes achieving conditions of stable development difficult. In Poland renewal of villages is known thanks to the Opole program of Village Renewal (accessed by more than 300 soletstvoes), which was initiated in 1997. It is the biggest and the longest active regional program of local societies activation. As the first in the country it introduced the rule of grounding village development on a strategy drawn up by soletstvo (village renewal program). As a result of promotional actions of the region the expression of renewal became known throughout the country. It is possible to define a model of the progress of the village renewal process - from the initiating moment to the state when the village gains a stable bases of its development. Four phases where allocated: initial, starting, advanced and panoptical. Each of them has a characteristic, separate set of characteristics (states), each following phase is more capacious as to the matter and complexity of achievable states, and is, at the same time, longer and requiring exponential increase in costs. For village societies, the presented model has a value of general instruction on how to lead the village renewal in a most efficient way and in accordance with the logic of the process and what quality targets should be taken in the said moment of village renewal process advancement.

Opis:
The current paper presents the results of evaluation of the influence of selected measures within Rural Development Programme (RDP), such as spatial development, afforestation, land consolidation, water management, village renewal and agri-environmental programmes on rural areas in Poland. The data used in the study cover the years 2004-2015, and were collected from the reports of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Polish Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARMA), Polish Central Statistical Office (CSO), with special consideration given to normative acts concerning the Rural Development Plan 2007-2013 and 2014-2020, and the results of a study on different aspects of rural development conducted at the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute in Puławy (IUNG-PIB). Our study clearly shows that aforementioned measures differ significantly in terms of the level of implementation in Poland. Thus, the spatial development operation, one of the most important activities in relation to the sustainable development of rural areas, has not been introduced in RDP as s separately task. Additionally, the initiatives regarding water retention were also not fully implemented under the RDP 2007-2013 because of the shortage of time. The process of land consolidation has contributed only to very little change in land use, from about 1% in “classical” method to 4% in “complex” method of land consolidation in the total area. On the other hand, a decline in reforestation has been observed in comparison of RDP 2004-2006 and RDP 2007-2013, which is considered to be appropriate and should lead to the target rate of afforestation of approximately 33%. The village renewal measure was entirely introduced and has a very positive effect on the agricultural environment. Agri-environmental programme plays an important role for both ecological and economical aspects of the agricultural environment and its realization covers a very wide range of actions. In conclusion, all the analysed measures have a very positive effect on the agricultural environment. However, they should be implemented more quickly and comprehensively which should lead to a more sustainable development of rural areas in Poland.

Opis:
From the beginning of permanent settlement, a homestead, a place of work and living of a peasant family, was the first and basic element shaping the settlement landscape. It generated clear spatial solutions for an entire village. Since the end of the 20th century, a peasant homestead has been commonly losing its traditional function. living and production functions have been separated from each other and a homestead has no longer been a spatial solution the village development used to be marked by. It is characteristic of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries that new forms of village and rural areas settlement developed. Traditional production homesteads belong mainly to the group of subsistence farms and partially to the group of semi-subsistence farms. No prospects for independent and unsubsidized growth of family subsistence farms and a part of semi-subsistence farms will result in continued operation and growth of large-scale farms in the years to come. Only very large area farms, which are mainly companies and cooperatives as well as those family farms which have more than 100 ha of plough land will be able to limit the cost of production and make a profit. In case such a scenario occurs, this will give rise to specialized, often monoculture, large farm agriculture, where a household is separated from a farmstead, the latter being regarded as a company. Change of the function, transformation of once typically agricultural villages into multifunctional centres, development of non-agricultural activities, and implementation of afforestation programmes will be finally accompanied by the disappearance of the existing homestead development from the majority of the rural areas and also the lack of new homestead development there. The landscape of rural areas used for agricultural purposes will be dominated by farmsteads with large area and single-species crop, greenhouses and livestock facilities making it possible for making maximum profit with the minimum expenditure. Besides, other objects of no permanent connection with the land will also prevail, including mobile buildings, storage sheds, and all-purpose rooms, and maybe in the not too distant future, there will also be vertical farms. Vertical objects, which for the time being partially remain in the sphere of futuristic designs, may also be located within the cities.

Rural objects of agricultural and comestible industry constitute important, although often underestimated, elements creating the cultural landscape of a village. Next to dominants in the form of churches or seats of land owners, industrial sets were important factors in rural, small building development. Production objects which have been permanently inscribed into the village landscape were water driven flour mills. Thanks to applied building and architectonical solutions which were based on tradition of a place ,mill buildings coexisted in harmony with the remaining development. Vast hydro technical systems which accompanied mill sets often gave a new image to the neighbourhood. The chosen water mills which exist in the southern part of former Wrocław district were discussed in the paper. Their role in creating the village landscape was described while basing on characteristic objects.

The authors used three example variants of rural development solutions to present the problem of defining the space of the contemporary countryside gardens of small, local parish communities in the former GDR, taking into consideration its integrative function. The three design subjects pre-sented in the paper (each developed with two variants) concern spatial arrangement of a parish garden as a public space for: community meetings and recreation (example 1 - fig. 1, 2), studying and recreation (example 2 - fig. 3,4), and relaxation/ meditation (example 3 - fig. 5, 6). All of them in the same attempt to organize space of wastelands; areas devastated culturally and naturally, but still important in the spatial structure of the town. The relations between the presented places local their use by local parish communities served as an impulse to define the fundamental, conceptual presumptions that let the presented composition suggestions take into account their timeless role of humanization of open space, with their potential standard of usage. One essential value of the presented examples is their practical potential - expected investment decisions after their public presentation to entire local communities (with declared support).

Opis:
Settlement landscape shaping on a rural area is a complex assignment,long-lasting process which requires multidiscipline in theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge in the range of architecture, special planning, architecture, ecology, sociology and other technical domains. The current elaboration of the image of a Polish village does not fill one with optimism, and such a state is the result of generally known historical, political and socio-economical reasons. Events occurring in the last 15 years have caused the necessity for reform of the agricultural system and reconstruction and renewing of the countenance of a Polish village by means of modification and deep, structural transformations. Decisions by the government and political realm are needed to carry out this aim and also a professional team who will lead these transformations in the right direction. The way architectonical education was carried out during various historical stages, national threats and constrictions in the example of the Department of Architecture of Warsaw Polytechnic, and the current state of the department and the direction of the education of the architects and planners, shows the period of the last few decades of the Department of Villages Architecture and Planning functioning which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The period of the crisis in 1989 and a change to the political system resulted in the need for restructuring of many social and economical domains, including restructuring of agriculture and settlements. Unfortunately those changes had a negative impact on educational programs at architecture departments not only in Warsaw, and the problem of villages underwent substantial limitations. Lack of a complex view in the management of rural areas concludes on one hand from imperfect legislative regulations, on the other hand from insufficient education and the catastrophic lack of educated planner's cadre in rural communes. The fact that the manager of an architecture and building section is a professional architect is rare. Designing architectonical, tenement, economical and servicing objects in most cases lies in the hands of building technicians or building engineers. Thus educating a professional cadre which will care for renewing the countenance of the Polish village and modern, cultural landscape is a priority assignment.

Opis:
Cities have never completely gave up rusticity. From the antiquity, villages and rural areas have been performing recreational functions for urban residents. They have been treating traditional tasks carried out in farmhouses as a hobby, in which they involve in their free time. Various forms of recreation in cities or these executed by their inhabitants are rooted in the rural rites and customs. Urban gardening is a rustic form of recreation in the city. Allotment gardens, backyards, communal gardens, farms for children, edible parks and food forests, grown according to the principles of permaculture, located within cities. The „rural” leisure of city dwellers is also achieved by equestrian centres, horse riding tracks and hotels for horses, increasingly localized in the urban development. The rustic recreation often allows for the integration of urban population through the large involvement of local communities and non-profit business in the form of a public-private partnership.

Village Renewal Program
Opis:
Landscape perception and its valorization is not easy. Most of all we have to remember that the landscape is not only what we see but it also consists of a very important part which is overlooked. And it is connected with history, tradition, customs and also the needs of people who contributed to its present shape. These are also expectations which are a symptom of interest in the landscape, not only of the inhabitants of such a place, who play a part, but also expectations of local authorities who have enormous influence on it's shaping by making decisions which can irreversibly change the look of the space which surrounds us. The presented analyses of landscape interiors are a part of the elaboration performed within the limits of the program Village Renewal, and which aim at defining individual character of the place, searching for elements which identify the village and which can be its visiting card in future. In the presented elaboration an attempt has been made to estimate those elements, putting the main stress on the visual side of an analyze. For an open landscape, in which silhouette of the village is visible, analyzes varied a little to those created for interiors. The presented methods of analyzing landscape interiors and rural panoramas allow an exact estimation of chosen parts of the village from various angles. Stock-taking and analyzes run only in plans are not enough because of the lack of the fourth dimension, very important for formulating any conclusions and taking design decisions. It is important while dealing with defining new areas for inhabiting or service functions, but also while introducing singular elements. It considers not only building objects together with detail, colour or wall surface quality, but also greenery which can constitute a wonderful supplement to existing interiors. It is particularly important in the case of well preserved, former village sets, together with their unshaken panoramas and interior climate. The localization of new functions on the outskirts of these types of places should be precluded by serious analyze of results of such actions in panoramas and entrances to them, not only by economical prognosis.

The article analyses the processes of change in Polish villages, which result from the fact that new residents are settling down in their areas. A significant number of Polish villages is subject to processes resulting from demographic and population changes, which entails cultural and social changes. Drawing on the theoretical concept of ruralization at the empirical level, the author analyses the opinions of the inhabitants of Czarny Las, a village which was treated as an exemplification of the previously defined processes. The article aims to indicate awareness changes: perception, knowledge and commitment from the perspective of the new internal diversification of contemporary rural population, which is the result of internal migration of the Polish society from urban to rural areas. The perception of the inhabitants of Czarny Las, which is administratively a village, turned out to be diverse and incompatible with the formal state of affairs. Most residents associate Czarny Las with the city and perceive the village as a housing estate or a district. Less than one third of respondents perceive the village in line with the administrative nomenclature. The difficulties in clearly defining the place of residence in the traditional rural-urban division are exacerbated by the fact that a significant number of respondents were not able to define their place of residence from this perspective.

Opis:
For many years or even centuries the traditional rural landscape was idealized by painters, landscape artists, extolled by poets and novelists, as a quiet area, full of green and close to nature. Villages change in respect of buildings, social-economical relations and landscape. Currently villages are multifunctional and only part of their inhabitants deal with agriculture. Particularly submissive to non-agricultural function development are villages situated in the suburban zone, where single-family building is developing dynamically. Taking into consideration the subject of the rural landscape it is necessary to realize the variety of functions which the buildings are to meet and special management of village areas. The agricultural landscape undergoes changes, which are influenced by intensifying mechanization, chemicalization and changes in the structure of farming. Conclusions, defining priorities of actions of local authorities, planners and dwellers in respect to the landscape are preserving the landscape of a village as an entirety, more detailed plans of special management, preservation and revitalization of green areas, preservation and management of surface water, popularizing regulations of regional architecture and landscape preservation among inhabitants of villages, social and educational organizations and local authorities.

Spatial shape is a result of a many years process which is influenced by a set of natural and cultural conditions which mix together. Shaping a village is firstly a period of building inhabitants and farming buildings, next symbols of cult and religion appear and together with development of the set, enrichment and development of inhabitants of the village, the spatial set was decorated and completed by plants for beauty and necessity. In rural areas, various forms of greenery were created in the past and their influence on the landscape can be found. Parks which used to be situated near palaces and churches, cemeteries, lane sets, midfield trees, fire brigade stations, farm yard trees and gardens next to houses, which are the subject of this article are among them. Traditional village gardens contain some characteristic which have not changed - many decorative plants grow on a small space and therefore a great variety of colours and shapes appear which attract passers-by attention and are in a way a visit card of a household. An important element of a garden composition are also fences usually from natural materials which constitute a boarder of a possession. There are many places in the area of Poland where nature and village settlements coexist and creating unrepeatable character. It is most important to preserve those historical rural sets and nursing their traditional elements both in macro and micro scale, as well as to continue customs of our ancestors as the historically shaped village areas which survived despite progressing changes are cultural heritage which provides the sense of unity and stability in the world of continuing changes.
