Assessment of accelerogram selection methods, as preliminary data during the time-history analyses, currently focuses on adequate representation of seismic conditions of location [1]. One of the factors which can be taken into account during the selection may be scattering of results of constructional analysis. In this article, the author examines a steel construction, previously tested in publications [2, 3, 4, 5, 6], based on 12 different parameters used during selection of actual kinematic excitations, as preliminary data for the time-history analysis.

Opis:
The paper presents the variability analysis of some quantitative characteristics, that is of tuber yield, starch content and yield, dry matter content and yield and vitamin C content in selected edible potato varieties. Reciprocal relations of variance components calculated and their percentage share in the total variability were a measure of variability evaluation for the characteristics examined. Moreover, the variability of the characteristics was characterised by means of the classical variability coefficient. It has been found that tuber yield and vitamin C content variability was determined mainly by the interaction effects of years and the factors examined, as well as the experimental error. The respective values were as follows: 44.3% and 34.7% for tuber yield, and 42.2% and 46.2% for vitamin C. The starch content was in 47.5% modified by the effects of the main factors (including 35.0% for years) and the error effect (39.0%). A similar interaction was observed in the case of dry matter content variability, but the error was 52.4%. Starch and dry matter yields were determined mainly by interaction effects of the years and the examined factors (40.7% and 39.9%, respectively) as well as the experimental error (32.2% of the total variability for both traits). The highest changes expressed as the values of the coefficient of variation were found for tuber yield, dry matter yield and starch yield.
W pracy przedstawiono analizę zmienności niektórych cech ilościowych, tj. plonu bulw, zawartości i plonu skrobi, zawartości i plonu suchej masy oraz zawartości witaminy C u wybranych odmian ziemniaka jadalnego. Największym zmianom, wyrażonym w postaci współczynnika zmienności, podlegał plon bulw, suchej masy i skrobi.

Opis:
The paper presents results of multivariate analysis of variations of radon concentrations in the shallow underground laboratory and a family house, depending on meteorological variables only. All available multivariate classifi cation and regression methods, developed for data analysis in high-energy physics and implemented in the toolkit for multivariate analysis (TMVA) software package in ROOT, are used in the analysis. The result of multivariate regression analysis is a mapped functional behaviour of variations of radon concentration depending on meteorological variables only, which can be used for the evaluation of radon concentration, as well as to help with modelling of variation of radon concentration. The results of analysis of the radon concentration variations in the underground laboratory and real indoor environment, using multivariate methods, demonstrated the potential usefulness of these methods. Multivariate analysis showed that there is a potentially considerable prediction power of variations of indoor radon concentrations based on the knowledge of meteorological variables only. In addition, the online system using the resulting mapped functional behaviour for underground laboratory in the Institute of Physics Belgrade is implemented, and the resulting evaluation of radon concentrations are presented in this paper.

Opis:
Pollen morphology and pollen variability of Rubus gracilis were studied. A total of 260 grains from 13 natural Polish localities were examined. Important characteristics include: a stretched bridge; a visible pore area and endopores; ectocolpi arranged regularly, more or less evenly spaced or, more rarely, joining one another in the apocolpium, long (79.3% length of the polar axis) and narrow; exine sculpture striate, distinct; striae and muri of equal width, rather narrow; striae usually running parallel to the polar axis, sometimes forming semicircles in the apocolpium zone; with distinct perforations. The size, outline and shape turned out to be poor criteria when identifying the species. A statistical analysis of 10 quantitative grain characteristics showed their little variability. The highest variability was found to occur in two traits connected with d (the distance between the apices of two ectocolpi). Statistical studies revealed no differences among the grains from the individual localities, likely the result of apomixis.

Opis:
The combined effect of climate change and steadily increasing seawater demand for industrial and domestic purposes in the Arabian Gulf region has a significant impact on the ecosystem in this region. Additionally, this effect may reduce the efficiency and increase the operating costs of industrial facilities that utilize seawater for cooling and other purposes. In this context, it is important to know various statistical characteristics of the sea surface temperature (SST) and their trends, in addition to the mean climatological characteristics. The analysis conducted in this study utilized a 17-year Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Level 4 dataset of 0.01 × 0.01° spatial resolution. First, the dataset was compared against a 2-year seawater temperature measurements at the ten offshore buoys in the relatively shallow coastal waters of the United Arab Emirates between Ras Ghumais and Dubai, which showed a reasonably good agreement between the two datasets, with the estimated root mean square deviations ranging from 0.5 to 0.9°C. Subsequently, several statistical SST characteristics were calculated. The trend analysis showed not only positive tendencies in the mean SSTs of up to 0.08°C/year in the northern Gulf, but also the trends in the annual percentile exceedances, particularly the 95th percentiles (near-maximum SSTs), which increased by approximately 0.07°C/year in the western United Arab Emirates and eastern Qatar waters. On the contrary, the 5th percentiles (near-minimum SSTs) decreased by up to 0.1°C/year, especially in the waters around Bahrain, Qatar, and the western United Arab Emirates. These results indicate that extreme hot and cold SST events in the Gulf are becoming more frequent and more extreme than before.

Several different isolates of Tomato black ring virus (TBRV) have been collected in Poland from cucumber, tomato, potato and black locust plants. Biological tests showed some differences in the range of infected plants and the type of symptoms, which was the basis for selection of seven the most biologically different TBRV isolates. According to the sequence of TBRV-MJ, several primer pairs were designed and almost the entire sequence of both genomic RNAs was amplified. The RT-PCR products derived from all tested TBRV isolates were digested by restriction enzymes. On the basis of the restriction patterns, the variable and the conserved regions of the TBRV genome were defined and the relationships between the Polish TBRV isolates established.

Understanding soil spatial variability and identifying soil parameters most determinant to soil organic carbon stock is pivotal to precision in ecological modelling, prediction, estimation and management of soil within a landscape. This study investigates and describes field soil variability and its structural pattern for agricultural management decisions. The main aim was to relate variation in soil organic carbon stock to soil properties and to estimate soil organic carbon stock from the soil properties. A transect sampling of 100 points at 3 m intervals was carried out. Soils were sampled and analyzed for soil organic carbon and other selected soil properties along with determination of dry aggregate and water-stable aggregate fractions. Principal component analysis, geostatistics, and state-space analysis were conducted on the analyzed soil properties. The first three principal components explained 53.2% of the total variation; Principal Component 1 was dominated by soil exchange complex and dry sieved macroaggregates clusters. Exponential semivariogram model described the structure of soil organic carbon stock with a strong dependence indicating that soil organic carbon values were correlated up to 10.8m.Neighbouring values of soil organic carbon stock, all waterstable aggregate fractions, and dithionite and pyrophosphate iron gave reliable estimate of soil organic carbon stock by state-space.

Opis:
Two statistical methods, fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics, are tested for their applicability to ostracod systematics. For this comparison, two morphologically similar ostracod species (Krithe compressa and Krithe iniqua) whose genus−level systematics is still incompletely resolved, are selected. Twenty−nine right valves of each species were collected from the upper Pliocene samples at the Monte San Nicola section in southern Italy. Statistical analyses (MANOVA on morphometric shape variables, and D values) were utilized to test if geometric morphometrics and fractal analysis are appropriate into discriminating between the two species. Both methods succeeded in distinguishing the species statistically. The fractal analysis of the two ostracod species shows D values centered on 1.31±0.02 for Krithe iniqua and on 1.40±0.02 for Krithe compressa. Geometric morphometric analysis indicates significant differences between the two species and allows studying intra−populational variability as well as. The most variable traits indicated by geometric morphometrics are vestibular area and posterior outline of the shell, indicating that these traits are the most relevant for the systematics of the species analyzed. Both fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics provide a measure of population variability. Fractal analysis has the advantage of being free from any subjectivity in the selection of characters and could be most appropriate to use for analysis of complex ornamentation for systematic purposes. However, a possible advantage of geometric morphometrics over fractal analysis is its ability to indicate where statistically significant variations in shape occur on the shell.

This paper presents the results of the study on morphological variability of leaves of a scattered tree species Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) in Poland. The leaves from short- and long shoots were collected from 17 localities widespread within the range of the species in Poland. Leaves were measured according to 15 morphological traits. The biometric data were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis in attempt to define variability between local populations. Most of the leaf traits are significantly correlated and are characterised by moderate level of variation. The average among population component of variation was 32.82% and 27.46% for leaves on short- and long shoots, respectively. The differences between sampled populations are significant, but only a weak geographical pattern of this differentiation was detected. Clinal type of variation was ascertained in two traits. Leaf traits which discriminate best the studied populations are also indicated. It was proved that leaves on short shoots differ markedly in shape and size from those of long shoots. Leaves on long shoots are steadier, but morphological trait values are less correlated. The study also confirmed the occurrence of individuals with leaves characteristic for S. torminalis var. perincisa Borbas et Feck and S. torminalis f. mollis Beck in a few Polish populations.

Morpho-anatomical characteristics of Vaccinium myrtillus, V. uliginosum and V. vitis-idaea leaves from several sites of the Central Balkans were examined. The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time morpho-anatomical leaf traits of these species in the studied populations and to identify traits that follow a specific trend along the gradients of climate factors. Leaf traits that discriminate Vaccinium species were as follows: depth of the adaxial cuticule (AdC), thickness of the palisade tissue (PT), thickness of the spongy tissue (ST), height of the abaxial epidermal cells (AbE), height of the abaxial cuticule (AbC) and leaf thickness (LT). Populations of V. myrtillus were characterized by the smallest, and populations of V. vitis-idaea by the highest values for AdC, PT, ST, AbE and LT. Additionally, AbC was significantly larger for V. uliginosum in comparison to two other species. On the basis of morpho-anatomical traits, intraspecific variability of the studied species was explored by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). CA based on 10 morpho-anatomical traits showed that populations of V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum that grew at lower altitudes (characterized by higher mean annual temperature) are more similar to each other. Especially V. myrtillus was responsive to the elevational gradient and exhibited the highest plasticity in morpho-anatomical leaf traits. Populations of V. vitis-idaea had a different pattern of differentiation along the elevational gradient. CA showed that the populations at the lowest and at the highest altitudes were more similar according to the morpho-anatomical leaf traits, meaning that evergreen leaves were more resistant to environmental conditions.

The participants were divided into 2 subgroups: subjects with no definite inclination to motion sickness (group A) and subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness (group B). Holter monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was carried out in all subjects during the virtual simulator driving. For 12 consecutive epochs of ECG signal, HR variability analysis was conducted in time and frequency domains. In subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness after ~30 min of the driving, changes in parameter values were found indicating an increase in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity with parasympathetic dominance.

The article presents the results of studies of the heart rate variability for women, specializing in race walking, at different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC). The results of spectral analysis of heart rate indicate that the first half of the MC is dominated by the contribution of MC HF component, and the second half is dominated by the contribution of the LF component and an ovulatory phase is dominated by the contribution of VLF component in the total power spectrum. According to the results of the geometric analysis, the increase of Mo in menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the MC, reduction of AMo – in postmenstrual, ovulatory phases indicates an increase in the HR functional state in these phases. Decrease of the HR functional state we noted in the premenstrual phase: Mo rates have dropped, and AMo – increased. IT indicators of regulatory systems have increased in postovulatory and premenstrual phases of the MC. In this regard, we have recommended the use of significant and strenuous exercise with the consideration of female athletes’ HR functional state in different phases of the MC.

Opis:
The morphology and variability of pollen of Rosa pendulina L. were studied. The material came from 10 native localities of this species. 300 pollen grains were examined. It was established that the diagnostic features of pollen grains of R. pendulina L. were: an elongated, narrow operculum, a poorly developed exine sculpture, long ectocolpi (a low value of the apocolpium index), and the predominance of grains elongated in shape. The results obtained usually correspond to data supplied by other palynologists. A statistical analysis of 10 quantitative grain characteristics showed their variability to be rather low. The highest variability was found to occur in two traits connected with d (the distance between the apices of two ectocolpi). Statistical studies revealed dependences among the grains from the 10 analysed localities

Opis:
The analysis of heart rate variability can be used to predict cardiovascular state in diabetic children. Studies on HRV are mainly based on RR intervals of the ECG signal and include both linear indices and nonlinear characteristics. The current study aims at applying Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis to investigate signals of the heart rate variability (HRV) in 50 healthy children (group K), 27 patients suffering from diabetes type 1 without subsequent vascular complications (group A) and 35 patients suffering from diabetes type 1 with subsequent vascular complications (hypertension) (group B). Multifractal features were extracted to quantitatively compare signal complexity between the healthy group and the group of children with diabetes and diabetes with complications. The MFDFA analysis showed the multi-fractional nature of the signals in all groups. The characteristic MFDFA parameters were determined and subjected to statistical analysis. It showed differences in parameters h(1) and h(2) between the control group K and group A. This gives rise to the development of further research in an attempt to distinguish between these groups.

Opis:
The pollen morphology of eight species from three subgenera and five sections of the genus Allium L. was studied by LM and SEM (i.e.: A. angulosum, A. carinatum, A. senescens subsp. montanum, A. oleraceum, A. scorodoprasum, A. ursinum, A. victorialis and A. vineale). The material came from natural sites of these species located in Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. For measurements a sample consisted of 30 pollen grains. In total, 240 pollen grains were analysed. They were analysed in respect to six quantitative features (i.e.: length of long axis – LA, length of short axis – SA, thickness of exine along long axis – Ex, SA/LA and Ex/LA ratios and length of sulcus) and the following qualitative ones: pollen outline and shape, exine ornamentation. Taxonomic value of these pollen features is considerable, especially on the sections level. On the basis of these features, it is impossible to distinguish individual Allium species but only their groups. The examined features were characterized by moderate (LA, SA and SA/LA) or high variability (Ex, Ex/LA). Among studied species the lowest variability was found in A. victorialis and the highest in A. vineale and A. oleraceum.
Wśród badanych gatunków najniższy poziom zmienności reprezentowały ziarna pyłku A. victorialis, a najwyższy – A. vineale i A. oleraceum.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the study on morphological differentiation of seeds of five Polish species of the genus Sorbus L. (S. aria (L.) Crantz, S. aucuparia L. Emend. Hedl., S. chamaemespilus (L.) Crantz, S. intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. and S. torminalis (L.) Crantz). The biometric data of 1980 seeds were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis in attempt to define intraspecific variation and to find differences between studied taxa. Most of the seed traits are significantly correlated and are characterised by moderate level of variation. Seeds of S. aucuparia (both subspecies) are the least variable while seeds of S. torminalis and S. intermedia the most. On the basis of size and shape traits of Sorbus seeds only seeds of S. aucuparia can be definitely distinguished from the others.

Opis:
The study presents long-term variability in satellite retrieved phytoplankton size classes (PSC) at two coastal sites, off Gopalpur and Visakhapatnam, in the north-western Bay of Bengal. The abundance-based models by Brewin et al. (2010) (B10) and Sahay et al. (2017) (S17), for retrieval of PSC (micro, nano, and picophytoplankton), from satellite data, were validated. Both the models performed well in the retrieval of nano and microphytoplankton. However, B10 performed poorly in retrieving picophytoplankton. The statistical analysis indicated better performance of the S17 model and hence was applied to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard Aqua satellite (MODISA) data to understand the temporal (at monthly climatology) and spatial variability (from nearshore to offshore). The spatial distribution indicated nearshore dominance of micro and offshore dominance of picophytoplankton. In nearshore waters off Gopalpur, microphytoplankton dominated throughout the year except for months of south-west monsoon (June and July) where the dominance of picophytoplankton was observed. All PSC exhibited similar distribution at an annual scale with a primary peak during pre-monsoon (March and April) and a secondary peak during post-monsoon (September— November). However, microphytoplankton concentration during post-monsoon was higher off Gopalpur in comparison to Visakhapatnam. The higher microphytoplankton concentration during pre-monsoon was attributed to recurrent phytoplankton blooms. Whereas, post-monsoon increment could be attributed to enhanced phytoplankton growth by availing nutrients sourced from monsoonal precipitation induced terrigenous influx. The outcome of the present study recommends the use of the S17 model for satellite retrieval of PSC from the north-western Bay of Bengal.

Technique for separate estimation of fast and slow fluctuations in the heart rate signal is developed. The orthogonal dyadic wavelet transform is used to separate the slow heart rate changes in approximation part of decomposition and fast changes in detail parts. Experimental results using the recordings from persons practicing Chi meditation demonstrated the applicability of estimation heart rate fluctuations with the proposed approach.
