Opis:
In order to be a part of an explanatory theory of translation, translation competence should be taken as the specific competence a translator needs beyond general types of competence, such as the knowledge of the source language and the target language. In literary translation, the translator is an expert reader of the source text, whereas in scientific translation it is unrealistic and not necessary to expect this. This imposes different requirements on translation competence.

The presented paper focuses on the problem of machine translation, especially statistical machine translation. The idea behind MT was the concept of the computers’ ability to translate some basic and schematical texts by using databases of grammar and vocabulary. Currently MT is not only a fast-developing field of study, but also a popular and (in many cases) free of charge method of translating texts for personal use, for example via Google Translate.

Modulation is a process which involves changing the informative parameters of the source language word. The concrete manifestation of this transformation is the act of replacing the source language words with equivalents unrelated to the systematic regularities of lexis and as such they might a) have relevance to these regularities, i.e. the equivalent exhibits a semantic or associative link with the source language word, or b) not have relevance to these regularities, i.e. the equivalent does not exhibit a semantic or associative link with the source language word, but its use is justified by extralinguistic factors (e.g. logical reasoning or a concrete situation).

Opis:
The present paper aims at investigating the problem of translating interjections from English into Polish. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and its Polish translations by J. Paszkowski (1961), M. Słomczyński (1978), and S. Barańczak (1990) are chosen as the corpus for the present study. The analysis of the translations of the original English interjections will reveal the translational strategies followed by the translators. The first part of the paper is devoted to a short discussion concerning the definition and taxonomy of interjections. Next, the problem of the role interjections play in drama is discussed on the basis of the specialist literature. Finally, different translation strategies are presented followed by the analysis of the corpus material.

During the first two decades of the twenty-first century, we can observe an unprecedented shift in the practice of theatrical translation and a revision of the role of the theater translator. Nowadays, scenic translation methods, including surtitling, put in question the traditional perception of the key concepts of translatology such as translator, equivalence, translation process and methods or even the text. In this paper, based on the theoretical works, the voices of the researchers and theater professionals, the author discusses the status and roles of the theatrical translator as well as the challenges of his activity in the context of the modern theories of theater translation.

The aim of this article is to investigate the usefulness and applicability of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) programmes in relation to the qualities (e.g. standardisation, predictability, terminology) of the translated text. In the study both scientific articles and translator’s forums are taken into account in order to establish advantages and limitations of commercial CATs. It appears that CAT programmes influence cognitively the translator’s work and even though they are supposed to facilitate his or her work, they may hinder or slow down the process of translation. These programmes are also applicable only in the case of certain types of texts, namely those which are standard and predictable and they fail in the case of texts which are linguistically or culturally-coloured. Furthermore, translators express numerous practical concerns regarding CATs (e.g. their price, instability). However, their use has become a very basic translation skill and it is no longer an advantage but an absolute necessity for anyone wishing to work as a translator.

The created world of Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series depicts a future society where gender identity has undergone a process of uniformisation, resulting in the erasure of gendered language. The novels take the form of a confessional (a recounting of the events of the past) which are published in the future society without the express consent of the other characters taking part in the depicted course of events. The narrator, in a motivated show of re bellion against their society’s current ideology (discussed both at the beginning of the series and as they progress with the narration), reinscribes gendered pronouns onto the unknowing characters; however, this is done on an arbitrary basis, which the narrator does not always discuss. The present paper aims to emphasize the growing number of LGBT+ novels published and the impossibility of transposing them into Romanian due to the lack of a gender-neutral pronoun that does not default to the masculine. The paper analyses Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer in order to specify the various nuances that would be lost in the cultural adaptation and translation of the novel into Romanian, a translation which has yet to occur, given the complexity and constraints of the novel and the depicted ideology behind it.

Opis:
One of the most popular, easiest to get and absorb, and reaching the largest audiences form of translation is the translation for the needs of mass-media. It is so-called Audiovisual Translation (AVP) which is characterized by the existence of component elements beyond linguistic elements such as: picture, sound and music (Internet0). Audiovisual translation can be divided into “inter-lingual translation, intra-lingual (monolingual) subtitling for the hard-of-hearing and the deaf, audio description for the blind, live subtitling (e.g. news broadcasts), and subtitling for opera and the theatre” (Serban). The most popular and powerful type of AVT is inter-lingual translation which contains such modes as dubbing and subtitling – “as far as cinema translation is concerned, or sometimes a third, minor, mode—voice over—in the case of television translation” (Szarkowska). “The decision as to which film translation mode to choose is by no means arbitrary and stems from several factors, such as historical circumstances, traditions, the technique to which the audience is accustomed, the cost, as well as on the position of both the target and the source cultures in an international context” (Szarkowska). This paper will focus on two out of three modes of inter-lingual translation, namely on dubbing and subtitling.

The sophisticated and artistic vision of this author-illustrator raises questions about methods and criteria to be adopted by anyone who wishes to translate the delicate balance between what is told by the verbal and pictured by the visual. In particular, as the present analysis reveals, the translator’s interventions in the original text-image interaction cannot be regarded as intersemiotic translation, but as undesired explicitation limiting the creative actions of the active child-reader.

It is the objective of the article to investigate the expectations we can have from technology in public service translation compared to the performance of professional communicators; The issue of what a machine can(not) do and to fathom, when a professional translator has to intervene, needs a bottom-up approach and will be discussed against the backdrop of public service translation as domain-specific intercultural communication.

Newer and newer Bible translations from original languages tend to appear regularly. Their authors pursue a plethora of strategies, from interlinear to philological to dynamic ones, taking as the source text not only the Hebrew, but also the Greek canon. Since the 1980s, the books of the Greek Bible have been translated into German, English, Italian, Spanish and French; ten years ago, this group was complemented by the Polish rendering made by Rev. Prof. Remigiusz Popowski. Though enthusiastically received, the text was not much researched. This article is intended to make up for this paucity and present the Polish text of the Septuagint from the perspective of its bibliological process and that of descriptive translation studies: a brief account of its historical background, the author of the translation, a record of editions and the significance for the Polish biblical milieu is followed by a closer analysis and exemplification of strategies and techniques adopted by the author.

Over the nearly two centuries that Hamlet has been a fixture of the Slovene cultural firmament, the complete text has been translated five times, mostly by highly esteemed figures of Slovene literature and literary translation. This article focuses on the most recent translation, which was done by the prominent Slovene drama translator Srečko Fišer for a performance at the National Theatre in Ljubljana in 2013. It examines the new translation’s relations to its source text as well as to the previous translations. After the late twentieth century, when Hamlet was regarded as a text to be challenged, this new translation indicates the return to the tradition of reverence both for the source text and its author, and for the older translations. This is demonstrated on all levels, from the choice of source text edition, which seems to bear more similarities with the older translations than with the most recent predecessors, to the style, which echoes the solutions used by the earlier translators. Fišer continues the Slovenian tradition to a far greater extent than the two translators twenty years ago, by using the same strategies as the early translators, not fixing what was not broken, and only adding his own interpretation to the existing ones, instead of challenging or ignoring them. At the same time, however, traces of subversion of the source text can be detected, not in the form of rebellion, but rather as a mild disregard. This latest translation is the first one to frequently reshuffle the text. It is also the first to subordinate meaning to style. This all indicates that despite the apparent return to tradition, the source text is no longer treated with the reverence of the past.

Opis:
The purpose of the research is to identify a range of possible ways of explication in the translation of a literary text, their study and systematization taking into account the general strategy of the translator. The task of the research is to consider and analyze the application of explication in Ukrainian translations of G Wells’s novel “The Invisible Man” performed by M. Ivanov and O. Didyk using the method of contextual, comparative and, in some cases, component analysis. The undertaken analysis of scientific theories testifies that the reasons that prompt the translator to apply explication can be external and internal. One of the factors at the junction of internal and external causes is the role of the translator as a mediator in the process of interlingual communication. Based on comparative analysis, we concluded that M. Ivanov’s translation decisions quite specifically and adequately reflect the versatility and complex intertwining that are characteristic of G. Wells’ reproduction of the picture of what is happening. However, it is not always possible to prioritize the decision of M. Ivanov, as very often the translator deviates from the original and applies a paraphrase. O. Didyk’s translation is dominated by a position with a focus on the recipient culture. The practical significance of the study is in the possibility of using the conclusions and recommendations in the practice of literary translation and editing of translated texts, as well as in assessing the quality of translation.

Opis:
Noun zakład (plant) appearing in the names of enterprises is not very popular among onomasticians. It may be an interesting subject of research for translators in connection with problems occurring during attempts to translate it into a foreign language. In Polish names of medical institutions, this noun is used not only in the sense of an enterprise/institution or its part, but also as an element of statutory defined names. Based on Polish law, this article details the possible meanings of the noun zakład in Polish names of medical facilities. The knowledge of individual types of facilities and their scope of competence constitutes the basic knowledge of a translator, necessary for the correct translation of the names of medical facilities. The main research objective was to determine the issues of translating into German the Polish names of medical facilities containing the noun zakład based on the available workshop aids. First, the translations proposed by dictionaries and on translator forums were critically evaluated. However, due to the fact that these aids contain only the translation of selected components of the names of medical facilities, it was necessary to obtain the translations of full names. Therefore, an attempt was made to determine whether the translators took into account the different meanings of the word zakład in the individual names, on the basis of ordered translations of selected names of medical institutions made by professional translators.
