Opis:
The presented paper focuses on the problem of machine translation, especially statistical machine translation. The idea behind MT was the concept of the computers’ ability to translate some basic and schematical texts by using databases of grammar and vocabulary. Currently MT is not only a fast-developing field of study, but also a popular and (in many cases) free of charge method of translating texts for personal use, for example via Google Translate.

The aim of this article is to investigate the usefulness and applicability of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) programmes in relation to the qualities (e.g. standardisation, predictability, terminology) of the translated text. In the study both scientific articles and translator’s forums are taken into account in order to establish advantages and limitations of commercial CATs. It appears that CAT programmes influence cognitively the translator’s work and even though they are supposed to facilitate his or her work, they may hinder or slow down the process of translation. These programmes are also applicable only in the case of certain types of texts, namely those which are standard and predictable and they fail in the case of texts which are linguistically or culturally-coloured. Furthermore, translators express numerous practical concerns regarding CATs (e.g. their price, instability). However, their use has become a very basic translation skill and it is no longer an advantage but an absolute necessity for anyone wishing to work as a translator.

Opis:
The paper concerns machine translation systems that form a discipline of computer science and are aimed at writing computer programs that are able to translate text between natural languages. In the paper the author argues that it is not possible to build a machine translation system that would be able to translate any kind of documents with a sufficiently high quality. Instead, the author proposes a specialized machine translation system the aim of which is to translate financial reports concerning the global currency exchange market – forex. For the purpose of building the above mentioned system, the author has proposed his own machine translation method of translation patterns. The translation patterns allow transferring the translation process from the level of single words to the level of words chunks. The translation patterns play a very important role in the case of such an inflectional language as Polish because they make it possible to choose the correct form of Polish translation of foreign phrases depending whether they perform the verb or object function in the sentence. The high quality of the specialized machine translation system developed by the author was proved with many experiments the results of which are demonstrated in the paper. The quality of translation is so high that the Polish translations of English reports from the global currency exchange market can be published on Web pages without any additional changes. Thus, it is possible to totally eliminate the human translator from the process of translation of texts which are highly stereotypical and oriented to a selected and narrow domain.

Opis:
The paper introduces a hybrid approach to a very specific field in machine translation - the translation of closely related languages. It mentions previous experiments performed for closely related Scandinavian, Slavic, Turkic and Romanic languages and describes a novel method, a combination of a simple shallow parser of the source language (Czech) combined with a stochastic ranker of (parts of) sentences in the target language (Slovak, Russian, Slovenian). The ranker exploits a simple stochastic model of the target language and its main task is to choose the best translation among those provided by the system. The last section of the paper presents results indicating better translation quality compared to the existing MT system for Czech and Slovak and compares them with the results obtained by the translation from Czech to Russian using the same system.

ABSTRACTMachine translation enables students to produce work in the target L2 which may be superior to that which they could produce otherwise.  The present study examines whether use of machine translation can be detected by teachers.  Seventeen native teachers compared and assessed the authorship of five human translations (HT) and five machine translations (MT) of Japanese news stories.  Native teachers were able to accurately detect the difference in 74.04% of cases due to increased passive clauses (a ratio of 1 to 2.5), and inappropriate pronoun use (a ratio of 1 to 6.5) when MT was used.

Re-speaking is a mechanism for obtaining high-quality subtitles for use in live broadcasts and other public events. Because it relies on humans to perform the actual re-speaking, the task of estimating the quality of the results is non- trivial. Most organizations rely on human effort to perform the actual quality assessment, but purely automatic methods have been developed for other similar problems (like Machine Translation). This paper will try to compare several of these methods: BLEU, EBLEU, NIST, METEOR, METEOR-PL, TER, and RIBES. These will then be matched to the human-derived NER metric, commonly used in re-speaking. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the above automatic metrics normally used for MT system evaluation can be used in lieu of the manual NER metric to evaluate re-speaking transcripts.

People from war-torn countries and countries suffering economic hardships are on the move in search of a better life or of a refuge. The host countries are challenged: To ensure equal access to public services, civil and political participation of migrants and refugees means to tear down the language barrier. Only translating and interpreting can offer a realistic, time-sensitive solution to this challenge and give “speechless” communities a voice. It is the objective of the article to investigate the expectations we can have from technology in public service translation compared to the performance of professional communicators; The issue of what a machine can(not) do and to fathom, when a professional translator has to intervene, needs a bottom-up approach and will be discussed against the backdrop of public service translation as domain-specific intercultural communication.

High-quality machine translation between human languages has for a long time been an unattainable dream for many computer scientists involved in this fascinating and interdisciplinary field of computer application. The developed quite recently example-based machine translation technique seems to be a serious alternative to the existing automatic translation techniques. In the paper the usage of the example based machine translation technique for the development of system which would be able to translate an unrestricted French text into Polish is proposed. The new approach to the example-based machine translation technique that takes into account the peculiarity of the Polish grammar is developed. The obtained primary results of the development of the proposed system seem to be very promising and appear to be a step made in the right direction towards a fully-automatic high quality French-into-Polish machine translation system for unrestricted text.

until recent times TM (translation memory) and MT (machine translation) were perceived as opposite approaches to using technology in translation – the aim of TM used in CAT tools is to optimise translation workflow and the initial aim of MT is to replace a human translator. In the last years CAT tools began to implement MT giving translators additional suggestions. As a result the translator can edit both TM matches and MT output within a single CAT tool. This article is devoted to such a phenomenon. It addresses technologies used in machine translation and computer-assisted translation, explores differences between them and provides an insight into MT-assisted TM translation and post-editing which had been known first. It also presents a brief overview of the most curious findings in the field.

The present paper aims at presenting a short study of the prefixed forms of the Polish verb pić (‘to drink’) (napić, wypić, popić, przepić, opić, zapić, etc.) and their French equivalents found in two parallel corpora: Glosbe and Reverso Context. In the first part, selected theoretical approaches concerning the verbal prefixation in Polish are discussed, with particular attention to the hypothesis of “perfective hypercategory” by Włodarczyk and Włodarczyk (2001b). The second part focuses on the results of the contrastive Polish-French analysis. The research is carried out in the general framework of the Aktionsarten theory and tries to discover by which linguistic means (grammatical and/or lexical) the French language expresses different semantic values conveyed by the Polish prefixes. The results of the analysis are appropriately formalized according to the principles of the object-oriented approach by Banyś (2002a, b), i.e. described by the syntactic-semantic schemes (which, after several changes of specification, can be applied in the machine translation programs). The purpose of the investigation is, therefore, twofold: theoretical, since it is the matter of discovering certain relations between two languages expressing differently a given linguistic phenomenon, and practice, which consists in formulating interlinguistic correspondence rules for the purpose of the Polish-French translation.

Text alignment and text quality are critical to the accuracy of Machine Translation (MT) systems, some NLP tools, and any other text processing tasks requiring bilingual data. This research proposes a language-independent bisentence filtering approach based on Polish (not a position-sensitive language) to English experiments. This cleaning approach was developed on the TED Talks corpus and also initially tested on the Wikipedia comparable corpus, but it can be used for any text domain or language pair. The proposed approach implements various heuristics for sentence comparison. Some of the heuristics leverage synonyms as well as semantic and structural analysis of text as additional information. Minimization of data loss has been? ensured. An improvement in MT system scores with text processed using this tool is discussed.

Maintaining semantic relations between words during the translation process yields more accurate target-language output from Neural Machine Translation (NMT). Although difficult to achieve from training data alone, it is possible to leverage Knowledge Graphs (KGs) to retain source-language semantic relations in the corresponding target-language translation. The core idea is to use KG entity relations as embedding constraints to improve the mapping from source to target. This paper describes two embedding constraints, both of which employ Entity Linking (EL)—assigning a unique identity to entities—to associate words in training sentences with those in the KG: (1) a monolingual embedding constraint that supports an enhanced semantic representation of the source words through access to relations between entities in a KG; and (2) a bilingual embedding constraint that forces entity relations in the source-language to be carried over to the corresponding entities in the target-language translation. The method is evaluated for English-Spanish translation exploiting Freebase as a source of knowledge. Our experimental results demonstrate that exploiting KG information not only decreases the number of unknown words in the translation but also improves translation quality
