The article raises the issue of the situation of transgender people in Poland. It criticizes the decision making system of public administration in relation to transgender people but also to straight people. The administration in Poland is detached from the problems of society, apply the law based onthe developed, rigid standards. The Constitution emphasizes equality and respect for the individual, what is not seen in the case law and administrative activities. Article draws attention to the possibility of administrative law - material in the process of issuing a decision in relation transgendered people after gender reassignment surgery. The article presents an overview of research on transitions of transgender parents. We performed an analysis of studies which show a perspective of a child experiencing the transition of his or her parents. The results show how important it is to meet the emotional needs of the child, especially the need to maintain a secure and stable relationship with both parents in a situation of experiencing one parent’s transition and separation of parents (divorce). The results are presented and interpreted in the light of the attachment theory of John Bowlby and the concept of the five emotional needs derived from the theoretical basis of schema therapy.

Most of the transgender research concentrates on transgender women (biological men who identity themselves with the opposite gender), leaving little space for the research on transgender men (biological women identifying themselves as men). This is, in particular, visible in the Polish literature on the topic, and especially surprising in the light of Godlewski’s research (1988: 547), which indicates that transgender men outnumber transgender women in the Polish population. The aim of the paper is to describe the phenomenon of transgenderism, its etiology (focusing on differences between transmen and transwomen) and the stages of transgender identity development; and to present two case studies of transgender men, describing the key moments for their identity construction and gender expression and their impact on the transmen functioning.

The article provides an overview of the solutions used in the methodology of research on transgender. This was done based on a compilation of major foreign research on transgender and an analysis of the content of the EBSCO website. As a result, some changes have been observed over time. They concerned the scope of the amount of research related to the issue of transgender over time, preferences of data collection methods, research patterns and technologically advanced solutions. Possible factors determining the result of the review were discussed. The authors indicated the significance of the developing methodological tendencies in studies on transgenderism during several decades on education and, as a result, on general social awareness.

Artykuł osadzony jest w teoretycznej ramie socjologii feministycznej i transgender studies. Autorka odnosi się do problematyki transpłciowości w kontekście socjalizacji płciowej jako procesu realnie wpływającego na diagnozowanie transpłciowości, a także na przebieg życia, w tym na zainteresowania i wybory zawodowe osób transpłciowych. Tekst powstał w oparciu o wyniki analizy 18 wywiadów narracyjnych z transpłciowymi kobietami. W pierwszej części przedstawiono kwestie socjalizacji, socjalizacjipłciowej, tożsamości płciowej oraz transpłciowości, w nawiązaniu do podstawowych stanowisk teoretycznych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono zjawisku passingu – termin ten funkcjonuje zarówno w żargonie osób transpłciowych, jak i w literaturze naukowej. W drugiej części tekstu ukazano wyniki analiz, dotyczących znaczenia przeciwnej do płci odczuwanej socjalizacji płciowej oraz stosunku transpłciowych kobiet do ról płciowych, w szczególności do idei passingu.
The article is set in the theoretical framework of feminist sociology and transgender studies. The author addresses the issue of transgender identity in the context of gender socialisation understood as a process which has real impact on the diagnosis of transgenderism, as well as on the life trajectory, including interests and career choices of transgender people. The article is based on the results of a close analysis of 18 narrative interviews with transgender women. In the first part the author interrogates such issues as: socialisation, gender socialisation, gender identity, and transgenderism. Particular attention will be paid to the phenomenon of passing – a term which functions both in the jargon of transgender people and in scientific literature. The second part of the article demonstrates the results of studies concerning the meaning of socialisation to the gender assigned at birth and transgender women’s attitudes towards gender roles, in particular towards the idea of passing.

Przedmiotem analizy w tekście jest specyfika doświadczenia i cielesności osób transgenderowych. Wychodząc od definicji tego rodzaju tożsamości i jej uwikłania w normy genderowe i seksualne, autor pokazuje, że obecnie nie mieści się ona w sztywnych ramach, a bardziej polega na nieustannej negocjacji sensów i znaczeń. Zamiast jednak odwoływać się do codziennego życia subkultur queer czy społeczności transgenderowych, narażając się przy tym na fetyszyzujące, etnograficzne niemal spojrzenie na wybrany problem, autor skupia się na interpretacji kulturowych reprezentacji jednostek trans, jakie można odnaleźć we współczesnym amerykańskim kinie. Przeprowadzając komparatystyczną analizę filmów: Cal do szczęścia oraz Transamerica, autor tekstu krytycznie odczytuje konkretne zabiegi narracyjne i formalne, jakie mają służyć stworzeniu kulturowych wizerunków osób trans, podkreślając ich stereotypowość, opresyjność, ale i niekiedy wyzwoleńczą moc.
The article is centered around the peculiarity of trans experience and corporeality. Starting off with the definition of trans identity and its entanglement into gender and sexual norms, the author shows that it defies strict categorizations and is more about an-ongoing negotiation of senses and meanings. Instead of referring to the everyday life of queer subcultures and transgender communities though, risking the accusation of deploying an ethnographic, fetishizing look, the Author focuses on interpretation of cultural representations of trans individuals that could be found in modern American cinema. Offering comparative analysis of two pictures: Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Transamerica, the author critically reads specific narrative plots and devices that create the cultural image of trans characters, putting emphasis on their oppressive, stereotypical, but also emancipating potential.

The dominant notion of gender identity in Poland has been strongly influenced by essentialist concepts of gender roles. Consequently, transgender youths and their parents often experience social stigmatization, with the latter having their parenting skills called into question by people in their surrounding social environment. This has caused self-accusation among many parents, which may have influenced their own attitudes towards their children’s gender identity. The following paper details the subsequent outcomes of a qualitative research study conducted in Poland among the parents of transgender youths. The results of this research show the attitudes of trans youths parents towards their children’s gender identity; the initial reactions to their children coming out; their personal feelings; the process of reframing and reworking their stances.

The use of social media in qualitative research has become extremely popular. YouTube, in particular, has attracted attention from scholars working on (self-)representation of minority groups, including the transgender community (e.g., Dame 2013; Horak 2014). Most academic disciplines, however, have been slow in responding to the increasingly challenging nature of social media in terms of their ethics and methodologies. For example, there is a common misconception that any publicly available YouTube videos can be freely used for research. Many studies openly reference the YouTube channels they discuss (Wotanis and McMillan 2014) or anonymize data, but do not seek informed consent from creators (Raun 2020). What is more, researchers rarely reflect on how their work could impact the communities under study or the way creators use social media (Leonelli et al. 2021). At the same time, researchers wishing to protect vulnerable communities may find themselves falling short of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable) research principles required by funders. In this contribution, I discuss these and other challenges using, as a case study, my project, which investigates gender transition narratives on Polish social media. I wish to show that there is no one-fits-all approach to the ethics of social media studies—as the very nature of social media is in constant flux—and call for attentiveness and reflexivity as an inextricable component of qualitative social media research methodology.

The aim of this paper is to present how transmen perceive their masculinity while constructing it during the process of transition in Poland. One’s own sexual identity can be demonstrated in various ways. However, transsexual people frequently follow stereotypical images of being a woman or a man. They seek a clear and obvious message so as to express themselves and their sex. It is related to forming their own image, appropri- ate body-language and their behavior towards the opposite sex. That is why transsexual people tend to choose sexually unambiguous clothing, avoiding unisex fashion.

In recent years, the English-speaking world observed growing awareness of the gender non-binary/genderqueer community. Among other things, this involved the issue of in- clusive language, e.g. the singular they pronoun has been declared the word of the year by the American Dialect Society in 2015, and by Merriam-Webster in 2019. There is also growing media representation of characters using singular they in popular culture. This, however, poses a challenge to translators, as some languages – like Polish – are much more heavily gendered and lack an obvious equivalent of singular they. This article analy- ses Polish translations of three English-language television series featuring non-binary characters and discusses good practices one can employ when dealing with similar trans- lation challenges.

The focus on trans*1 individuals as researcher subjects often problematizes trans* identity, limiting the possibility for trans* individuals to create and co-create bodies of knowledge. Drawing on three years of participatory research in the animal production industry, I discuss the implications of my subjectivity as a trans* man in this particular setting and in my research more broadly. Beyond being a self-reflexive exercise, this study seeks to make a number of theoretical and empirical contributions. First, feminist literature discussing one’s subjectivity has largely focused on the dialectical existence between men and women, with little room for trans* or gender diverse perspectives. Further, studies that have acknowledged trans* identity have done so in relation to trans* persons as research subjects, with no recognition of their positionality or the possibility of the trans* researcher. This study seeks to change these paradigms by extending current feminist research frameworks on subjectivity to include greater gender diversity.

Based on A. Revathi’s The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life-Story (2010) and Kate Bornstein’s A Queer and Pleasant Danger (2012), the paper explores the possible connections that arise between the two autobiographies while articulating the similar praxis of living beyond gender norms, though in very distinctive cultural contexts. The comparability of the texts provides grounds to construe “queer” and “disability” in the transsexual experiences as symptomatic but not solely based on the common negation of “compulsory heterosexuality” and “compulsory able-bodiedness” as imposed social constructs. The process of “transgendering” (Ekins and King 34) as initiated by the sense of disability/queerness of being in the “wrong body” is also explored through the study of the narratives. Both Revathi and Bornstein are affected by an innate desire for a "feminine" form of existence as well as the social injunction of following the dictates of "normality" and "ableism" vis-à-vis the gender attributed at birth. The surgical and hormonal transformations do not lead to a psychosocial “rectification” and may culminate in a dysfunctional womanhood. Revathi’s unrequited love and failed marriage and Bornstein’s inability to "qualify" as a lesbian will be read as instances of how the inadequacy of social structures is misconstrued as a "gender-impairment" in the individual and instituted as "hijra" or "butch."
Artykuł stanowi analizę porównawczą dwóch narracji, The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life-Story (2010) autorstwa A. Revathi oraz A Queer and Pleasant Danger (2012) Kate Bornstein. Jego celem jest ukazanie powiązań i podobieństw pomiędzy praktykami życia codziennego w dwóch odmiennych kontekstach kulturowych. Porównanie to prowadzi przemyślenia znaczeń pojęć „queer" i „niepełnosprawność" w kontekście doświadczeń związanych z transseksualnością, które negują „przymusową heteroseksualność" i „przymusową pełnosprawność" jako narzucone konstrukty społeczne, choć nie sprowadzają się do negacji. Narracje te służą również za pretekst do zastanowienia się nad procesem „trangenderyzacji" (Elkins i King 34) wywołanej odczuciem niepełnosprawności/odmienności związanej z byciem „w niewłaściwym ciele". Zarówno Revathi jak i Bornstein działają pod wpływem wrodzonego pragnienia „kobiecej" formy istnienia, a także społecznego przymusu stosowania się do zasad „normalności" i „sprawności" związanej z płcią przypisaną im w chwili narodzin. Interwencje chirurgiczne i hormonalne nie prowadzą do psychospołecznej „rektyfikacji" i mogą doprowadzić do dysfunkcyjnej kobiecości. Autorzy odczytują nieodwzajemnioną miłość i nieudane małżeństwo Revathi, jak problem Bornstein z byciem uznaną za lesbijkę, jako przykłady sytuacji, w których nieadekwatność struktur społecznych tłumaczona jest jako „niepełnosprawność płciowa" jednostki zwanej „hidżra" czy „butch".

In this article, I want to present trans(human) Cher and Anohni’s voice qualities. Both singers represent ambiguous and queer forms of femininity that denaturalizes the concept of gender and entangles the listener into a transgressive aesthetic experience. By using the cyborg metaphor proposed by Donna Haraway and the concept of the grain of voice by Roland Barthes, I want to show how a female voice can become a critical form of resistance to the patriarchal and misogynistic conception of femininity.
W niniejszym artykule chcę zaprezentować właściwości trans(ludzkich) głosów Cher i Anohni. Obie piosenkarki reprezentują niejednoznaczne i queerowe formy kobiecości, która denaturalizuje pojęcie płci oraz wikła odbiorcę w transgresywne doświadczenie estetyczne. Przy użyciu metafory cyborga zaproponowanej przez Donnę Haraway oraz koncepcji ziarna głosu Rolanda Barthesa chcę pokazać, jak kobiecy głos może stać się krytyczną formą oporu wobec patriarchalnej i mizoginistycznej koncepcji kobiecości.

This paper aims to illustrate the research path and methodological aspects of the study of sexual normativity with reference to a specific population of the LGBTQ+ universe, namely binary and non-binary transgender people in the Italian context through the analysis and historical reconstructions of the path of gender afirmation, in daily life and in the narrative proposed by the main old media. The decision to orient the focus of the analysis on transnormativity is related to the observation of an important research gap present in the scholarly literature, which has so far analyzed the processes of the construction of sexual normativity in mainstream society - and, as a result, has produced several studies and theorizing on heteronormativity and the male homosexual population (or homonormativity) - while conspicuously leaving out noncisgenderist sexual identies (transgender, genderfluid, agender, etc.). Following up on these premises, specifically, the following research questions were set: what are the reference gender models that guide and direct the identity construction of transgender people? And what are those of binary and non-binary people? how do these models reflect aspects atributable to mainstream sexual normativity (mainly heteronormativity and cisgenderism) furthermore, what diefrences are evident among these reference models in relation to various socio-demographic and identity aspects (how do they vary according to age, educational qualification, gender identity status, and sexual orientation). In order to try to answer the questions of the research design, a survey was conducted, using a biographical approach, through the administration of semi-structured interviews with privileged witnesses working in the field of gender reafirmation pathways in the medical, clinical and legal fields, in order to reconstruct the chronological and cultural stages of the construction of transnormativity from the enactment of State Law 164/1982 to the present day. In contrast to this perspective, new, increasingly fluid, complex, and diefrentiated demands are emerging, which have generated debate on the one hand and tension both with mainstream society and within the LGBTQ+ community on the other. The article surveys the problem of non-binary gender in the context of linguistic experience of speakers of Polish. The first part deals with the notion of non-binary gender, the second part discusses its linguistic aspects, the third part presents the results of a questionnaire conducted among non-binary Polish speakers, the fourth part concludes the discussion and points to possible directions of further research.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zarysowanie zjawiska niebinarności płciowej i doświadczeń językowych osób niebinarnych posługujących się językiem polskim. W części pierwszej mowa o pojęciu niebinarności płciowej, w drugiej – omawiane są jego językowe aspekty, w trzeciej – prezentowane wyniki przeprowadzonego przez autorkę badania ankietowego wśród polskojęzycznych osób niebinarnych; w części czwartej następuje podsumowanie rozważań i wskazanie możliwych kierunków dalszych badań.
