    The present study aimed to explain the relationship between critical thinking and social tolerance among the students of the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University. The study methodology was descriptive-correlational. 294 students were selected from the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University in BA and MA courses by the stratified sampling method by Morgan Table. For data collection, a researcher-built questionnaire of social tolerance and the critical thinking questionnaire by Ricketts were applied and the reliability of these two questionnaires by Cronbach’s alpha was 0.84 and 0.85, respectively. The results of the correlation test showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between critical thinking and political, ethnic, nationality toleration, toleration against coverage and relationship and total toleration. The stepwise regression analysis showed that critical thinking dimensions explained the variance of social tolerance.

    The article presents the main results of the monitoring surveys (1992-2003) on inter-ethnic attitudes of Ukrainian population measured according to the social distance scale by Bogardus adapted by the article authoress in 1990 in Ukraine. The obtained data made it possible to reveal a number of phenomena and paradoxes of the mass inter-ethnic self-consciousness of population. New results confirmed the growing orientations (in the mass consciousness) to the more ethnic distance which promote development of the national and governmental isolation. The author paid a lot of attention to methodology (the social distance scale).

    Opis:
    On the basis of the seminal paper On the Historical and Dogmatic Methods in Theology authored by Ernst Troeltsch and of critical assessments of his polemicists, mainly Martin Heidegger and Rudolf Bultmann, this article aims to recognise the recent tendencies in theological and philosophical development of the studies devoted to the early modern Protestant thought. The subject matter of the paper, which is not a bibliographical study but a description of current intellectual history, is concerned with the consequences of Troeltsch’s thesis, namely the separation of scientific lore together with its particular and different goals – the theological one concerned with doctrinal questions, and the historical one concerned with rise, development and change. Due to the doctrinal problems discussed in the first part, the contemporary ecumenical movement appears to be the main driving factor for theological recognition of early modern Protestant doctrines. Beside the several unquestionable benefits of the recent intensification of Reformation studies in Poland, there are also several disadvantages or inherent limitations of this branch of Polish scholarship. First of all, the conceptual framework typical for ecumenism poses a threat of anachronic attitude to the specificity of early modern religious realities that were different from contemporary conditions of the ecumenical movement. Secondly, it may overlook the semantic changes undergone by the historical meanings and modes of usage of particular terms, once used for specific intended purposes. Consequently, basic concepts devoid of historical significance  like irenicism, toleration and ecumenism, lacking their Begriffsgeschichte clarifications, are too often used interchangeably, although there are pivotal differences between them. Moreover, the area ofthe interest of ecumenism is currently restricted to the historical precedents (irenicism, for instance) of the modern strive for an interconfessional agreement and is limited merely to the questions that divide contemporary Christianity (for example, the Lutheran doctrine of justification). Therefore, numerous other theological problems of Protestant Reformation are ignored.The second part of this paper will discuss the historical facet of the specificity of Troeltsch’s legacy.

    In this article the nature of religious violence is discussed with particular reference to the work and deeds of a Polish court preacher, Piotr Skarga. The author tries to place the aforementioned phenomenon in a wider cultural context. Drawing from a wide range of sociological and anthropological studies and proposing to understand violence not merely as an act of physical aggression, but also as a process of dehumanizing the enemy and thus making him/her liable to physical harm. The author argues that violence is intrinsic to the world of divided religious communities and can be considered by its perpetrators as an act of piety and doing God’s work. In the Polish context Piotr Skarga was one of the main representatives of this attitude.

    This paper is a study of John Locke’s process of reasoning, defined as the investigation and discovery of the agreement or disagreement existing among ideas. Reason has four principal duties to fulfill which include: First, the highest goal of reason is the discovery of truths such as the existence of an eternal being. Second, in understanding, reasoning eases the arrangement of ideas in order to portray and facilitate the agreement or disagreement among them. Third, reasoning perceives the connection of ideas in mental propositions. The fourth and final role of reason is that, it facilitates the making of right decisions and conclusions. Emphasizing on these four main functions of reason guarantees the basic objective of understanding which is geared towards the attainment of knowledge, judgment and truth. Through argumentation, reasoning fulfills the arrangement of ideas and operates through two major capacities being: First, it ascertains knowledge by determining intuitive or demonstrative knowledge. Last, it moderates judgment and assents by inferring opinions in probabilities.
    Artykuł ten jest studium procesu rozumowania Johna Locke'a, definiowanego jako badanie i odkrycie zgodności lub niezgody istniejącej pomiędzy ideami. Rozum ma do spełnienia cztery podstawowe obowiązki, do których nale-żą: Po pierwsze, najwyższym celem rozumu jest odkrycie prawd, takich jak istnienie wiecznego bytu. Po drugie, w zrozumieniu rozumowanie ułatwia uporządkowanie idei w celu zobrazowania i ułatwienia porozumienia lub bra-ku zgody między nimi. Po trzecie, rozumowanie dostrzega związek idei w zdaniach umysłowych. Czwarta i ostatnia rola rozumu polega na tym, że ułatwia on podejmowanie właściwych decyzji i wniosków. Podkreślenie tych czterech głównych funkcji rozumu gwarantuje podstawowy cel zrozumienia, który jest ukierunkowany na osiągnięcie wiedzy, osądu i prawdy. Poprzez argumentację rozumowanie spełnia układ idei i działa poprzez dwie główne zdolności: Po pierwsze, uzyskuje wiedzę poprzez określenie wiedzy intuicyjnej lub demonstracyjnej. Wreszcie, łagodzi osąd i akceptuje poprzez opinie oparte o prawdopodobieństwo.

    Artykuł proponuje nową próbę oceny nowożytnego irenizmu. Irenizm i ekumenizm, dawniej stanowiące istotne obszary zainteresowań badaczy dziejów reformacji, zostały z czasem zepchnięte na margines. Wykazuję, że zmiana ta jest częścią szerszego zjawiska w obrębie badań nad historią religii, oddalających się coraz bardziej od ujęć metodologicznych osadzonych w antropologii. W odpowiedzi artykuł niniejszy oferuje przegląd wiadomości o irenizmie epoki nowożytnej i stawia nowe pytania, a wszystko to dla lepszego zrozumienia dynamiki tych znaczących przemian. The article offers a reassessment of early modern irenicism. Irenicism and ecumenism, which were once significant areas of study for Reformation specialists, have drifted to the scholarly margins. I argue that this shift is part of a broader phenomenon connected to the study of religion that draws increasingly more from anthropologically based methodologies. In response, the article provides an overview of irenicism in the early modern world and proposes a new set of questions to help us better understand this important dynamic today.

    Spinoza’s bold, spirited defense of toleration is an animating theme of the Theological-Political Treatise (TTP) and an important reason for the significant historical impact of the text. But Spinoza’s arguments for toleration can be challenging to discern. True to its title, the TTP offers two main arguments for toleration, one political, the other theological. This paper argues that Spinoza’s theological argument for toleration is closely connected to a distinct and often overlooked argument from pluralism. This paper examines Spinoza’s argument from pluralism and defends that it is more attractive to similar arguments for toleration offered by Bodin and Bayle. It is more attractive than Bodin’s pluralism argument because Spinoza’s allows that religious beliefs and doctrines of faith have a rational justification, which makes possible a more optimistic picture of the prospects for religious disputation. Spinoza’s pluralism argument is also more attractive than Bayle’s argument because Spinoza’s does not regard religious beliefs as justified by sincerity, which means that he does not need to recognize any problematic rights of erroneous conscience, nor is he forced to accept as justified sincere beliefs in persecution or obviously immoral or irreligious beliefs.
    Odważna i zdecydowana obrona tolerancji stanowi ważny wątek Traktatu teologiczno-politycznego (TTP) Spinozy i jeden z powodów znaczącego historycznego wpływu tego tekstu. Nie jest jednak łatwo sprecyzować argumenty Spinozy na rzecz tolerancji. Zgodnie z tytułem, TTP zawiera dwa główne argumenty na rzecz tolerancji: polityczny i teologiczny. Autor niniejszego artykułu argumentuje, że teologiczny argument Spinozy za tolerancją jest ściśle związany z odrębnym i często pomijanym argumentem z pluralizmu. Artykuł zawiera analizę Spinozjańskiego argumentu z pluralizmu i broni tezy, że argument ten jest bardziej atrakcyjny niż zbliżone do niego argumenty na rzecz tolerancji podane przez Bodina i Bayle’a, ponieważ Spinoza dopuszcza możliwość, że przekonania i doktryny religijne mają racjonalne uzasadnienie, co pozwala z większym optymizmem patrzeć na przyszłość sporów religijnych. Spinozjański argument z pluralizmu jest również bardziej atrakcyjny niż argument Bayle’a, ponieważ Spinoza nie uznaje przekonań religijnych za uzasadnione na mocy ich szczerości, co zwalnia go od konieczności uznania problematycznych praw błądzącego sumienia. Ponadto Spinoza nie jest zmuszony do traktowania jako uzasadnionych szczerych przekonań prześladowców ani przekonań jawnie niemoralnych czy niereligijnych.

    On manipulating the meaning of words: the strategy of distorting the meaning of concepts in order to redirect people’s attitudes has been put in practice by ideologists and politicians for years. the paper focuses on the refections of selected thinkers and men of letters on this phenomenon. intellectual contributions of isaiah Berlin, Friedrich a. Hayek, leszek Kołakowski and charles l. stevenson on the one hand, and the considerations of george orwell, aldous Huxley, ayn Rand, sławomir mrożek and małgorzata musierowicz on the other hand are analysed. some recent incarnations of the tactics of perverting the meaning of words in recent political discourse in poland are critically examined. special attention is given to the manipulating the meaning of “paedophilia” in the context of the nationwide discussion on child sexual abuse in the catholic church. it is concluded that the dishonourable practice of verbal misrepresentation used under communism is at work again, this time in even more sophisticated form.

    W artykule omówiono problematykę wolności religijnej według edyktu mediolańskiego (313). Autor rozpoczyna od wyjaśnienia pojęcia wolności religijnej jako fundamentalnej wartości wywodzącej się z godności osoby ludzkiej. Wolność ta jest prawem zakorzenionym w naturze osoby ludzkiej. Artykuł zawiera dogłębną analizę edyktu mediolańskiego w kontekście wolności religijnej. Obchody 1700-lecia edyktu mediolańskiego są podstawowym celem prezentowanego artykułu. Autor opisuje przyczyny ogłoszenia dokumentu i jego treść. Wynika to z faktu dualizmu religijnego i politycznego, opartego na słowach Jezusa Chrystusa, który głosił: „Oddajcie więc Cezarowi to, co należy do Cezara, a Bogu to, co należy do Boga” (Mt 22,21; Łk 20,25). W artykule podkreślono, że cesarz Konstantyn I wyeksponował znaczenie i wartość chrześcijaństwa dla rozwoju i bezpieczeństwa Cesarstwa Rzymskiego. Edykt przyznał wolność chrześcijaństwu i innym religiom.
    The paper discusses the problem of the religious freedom according to the Edict of Milan (313). The Author starts with the explanation of the notion of the religious freedom as a fundamental value that comes from the dignity of the human person. This freedom is the law rooted in the nature of the human person. The article provides a thorough analysis of the Edict of Milan in the context of the religious freedom. The celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan is the basic reason of the presented article. The Author describes the reasons of the promulgation of the document and its content This is due to the fact of the religious and political dualism based on the words of Jesus Christ who declared: “render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21; Luke 20:25). In the article it is emphasised that the Emperor Constantine I exposed the importance and value of the Christianity for the development and security of the Roman Empire. The Edict granted liberty to Christianity and other religions.

    My title is “Arguing for Freedom of Religion,” not for “Toleration,” because I follow the eighteenth-century writer Christoph Martin Wieland in taking “toleration" to connote a gift or indulgence from a majority to a minority, whereas true freedom of religion would put everybody on the same plane to believe and practice religion as they see fit, or not at all. I consider three historically distinct ways of arguing for freedom of religion: from a premise held by one religion that requires freedom from others (the strategy of Locke, Madison, and Mendelssohn); from a premise about the uncertainty of all religious beliefs which calls for equal freedom (Bayle and Wieland); or from a fundamental requirement of equal freedom for all, with no premise about religion although it entails freedom in religious matters as in other things (Hutcheson, Meier, Kant). The latter approach may be most appealing from a purely philosophical point of view, but the former styles of argument have obviously had much to recommend them in historical contexts, and may still be useful.
    W tytule tekstu mowa o „wolności religii”, a nie o „tolerancji”, ponieważ za wzorem XVIII-wiecznego pisarza Christopha Martina Wielanda, traktuję „tolerancję” jako oznaczającą dar czy pobłażliwość okazaną mniejszości przez większość, podczas gdy prawdziwa wolność religii pozwoliłaby każdemu w równym stopniu – lub w równym stopniu zabroniła – wyznawać i praktykować religię wedle własnego upodobania. Autor omawia trzy różne, znane z historii sposoby argumentacji za wolnością religii: na podstawie przesłanki przyjmowanej w ramach jednej z religii i postulującej wolność od innych religii (strategia Locke’a, Madisona i Mendhelssona); na podstawie przesłanki o niepewności wszystkich przekonań religijnych, która przemawia za równą wolnością (Bayle i Wieland); na podstawie elementarnego wymogu jednakowej wolności dla wszystkich, bez odwoływania się do wolności religii, choć z pociągającego w konsekwencji wolność w kwestiach religijnych, podobnie jak w innych (Hutcheson, Meier, Kant). To ostatnie podejście może być najatrakcyjniejsze z filozoficznego punktu widzenia, choć ze zrozumiałych względów dwa pierwsze style argumentacji miały wiele zalet w kontekście historycznym, i wciąż mogą się okazać przydatne.

    In this article we present the theory of religious tolerance of Bartolomé de las Casas, his criticism of the use of violence as an instrument of conversion, and the elements of his thinking that contribute to the elaboration of the ideal of human rights. In this way we try to demonstrate the present value of his ideas.
    W niniejszym artykule przedstawiamy teorię tolerancji religijnej Bartolomé de las Casasa, jego krytykę użycia przemocy jako narzędzia przekształcenia oraz elementy jego myślenia, które przyczyniają się do wypracowania ideału praw człowieka. W ten sposób staramy się pokazać aktualną wartość jego pomysłów.
    En este artículo analizamos la teoría de la tolerancia religiosa de Bartolomé de las Casas, sus críticas al uso de la violencia como instrumento de conversión, y los elementos de su pensamiento que conducen a la elaboración del ideal de los derechos humanos. Con ello pretendemos demostrar la actualidad de sus planteamientos.

    The author shows the connection between the language and style of the press and the social conditions of its functioning and the typological features of the edition.The article offers the methodology of sociolinguistic analysis of newspaper with respect to its orientation towards its audience.The typological features of the language modelof the edition are found in headings, titles and the body of the text. The stylistic unity of the heading, the tytle and the text contains the semantic code of the edition and marksthe level of the joumalists' professionalism.

    W artykule przedstawiono uwarunkowania bezpieczeństwa w obszarze techniki i w obszarze społecznym. Przedstawiono relacje wyzwanie – zagrożenie. Zdefiniowano pojęcie bezpieczeństwa w technice i bezpieczeństwa w społeczeństwie. Podano sposoby zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa w technice na przykładzie systemu informatycznego. Przedstawiono sytuację w systemie społecznym na podstawie faktów opisujących zagrożenia ze strony środowiska naturalnego na przykładzie zjawisk powodziowych na Dolnym Śląsku.
    The paper presents the issues of the safety of the society at human and environment level. Safety results from the relation of challenge vs. threat. Challenges are technical systems and the environment. In technical systems, safety, event, risk, design faults and random faults are qualified. In the social system, elements of the safety protection system before flood are presented.

    The paper tries to uncover the meaning of the phenomenon of the black legends. The author presents a thesis that argues that their deliberate construction can be understood as an ideological long-range and mass weapon; its aim being to establish in history a pejorative picture image of the enemy. The kind of ideological construction usually comes into being through the application of the strategy pars pro toto to the holistic grasp of a given historical phenomenon, through which a distorted picture of a political adversary will be handed down for posterity. Nowadays this strategy continues to be applied through democratic education, where political correctness often takes the place of reliable researches.
    Artykuł jest próbą uchwycenia zjawiska czarnych legend, przyczyn ich powstawania w dziejach i oddziaływania na umysły współczesnych. Autor stawia tezę, że umyślnie konstruowane czarne legendy stanowią broń ideologiczną długiego zasięgu, której celem jest ugruntowanie w dziejach pejoratywnego wizerunku wroga. Konstrukcje ideologiczne tego rodzaju powstają wskutek zastosowania strategii pars pro toto do holistycznego ujęcia danego zjawiska historycznego, co tworzy w rezultacie wypaczony wizerunek adwersarza politycznego, utrwalany poprzez współczesny model demokratycznej edukacji, w której często poprawność polityczna zajmuje miejsce rzetelnych badań.
