Opis:
Dynamic Time Warping is a standard algorithm used for matching time series irrespective of local tempo variations. Its application in the context of Query-by-Humming interface to multimedia databases requires providing the transposition independence, which involves some additional, sometimes computa- tionally expensive processing and may not guarantee the success, e.g., in the presence of a pitch trend or accidental key changes. The method of tune following, proposed in this paper, enables solving the pitch alignment problem in an adaptive way inspired by the human ability of ignoring typical errors occurring in sung melodies. The experimental validation performed on the database containing 4431 queries and over 5000 templates confirmed the enhancement introduced by the proposed algorithm in terms of the global recognition rate.

Opis:
The availability of cheap and widely applicable person identification techniques is essential due to a wide-spread usage of online services. The dynamics of typing is characteristic to particular users, and users are hardly able to mimic the dynamics of typing of others. State-of-the-art solutions for person identification from the dynamics of typing are based on machine learning. The presence of hubs, i.e., few instances that appear as nearest neighbours of surprisingly many other instances, have been observed in various domains recently and hubness-aware machine learning approaches have been shown to work well in those domains. However, hubness has not been studied in the context of person identification yet, and hubnessaware techniques have not been applied to this task. In this paper, we examine hubness in typing data and propose to use ECkNN, a recent hubness-aware regression technique together with dynamic time warping for person identification. We collected time-series data describing the dynamics of typing and used it to evaluate our approach. Experimental results show that hubness-aware techniques outperform state-of-the-art time-series classifiers.

Research background: In recent times, the whole world has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The influence of the epidemic on the society and the economy has caused a great deal of scientific interest. The development of the pandemic in many countries was analyzed using various models. However, the literature on the dissemination of COVID-19 lacks econometric analyzes of the development of this epidemic in Polish voivodeships. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to find similarities in time series for infected with and those who died of COVID-19 in Polish voivodeships using the method of dynamic time warping. Methods: The dynamic time warping method allows to calculate the distance between two time series of different lengths. This feature of the method is very important in our analysis because the coronavirus epidemic did not start in all voivodeships at the same time. The dynamic time warping also enables an adjustment of the timeline to find similar, but shifted, phases. Using this method, we jointly analyze the number of infected and deceased people in each province. In the next step, based on the measured similarity of the time series, the voivodeships are grouped hierarchically. Findings & value added: We use the dynamic time warping to identify groups of voivodeships affected by the epidemic to a different extent. The classification performed may be useful as it indicates patterns of the COVID-19 disease evolution in Polish voivodeships. The results obtained at the regional level will allow better prediction of future infections. Decision makers should formulate further recommendations for lockdowns at the local level, and in the long run, adjust the medical infrastructure in the regions accordingly. Policymakers in other countries can benefit from the findings by shaping their own regional policies accordingly.

Traditional use of dynamic time warping for signature verification consists of forming some dissimilarity measure between the signature in question and a set of "template signatures". In this paper, we propose to replace this set with the hidden signature and use it to calculate the normalized errors of signature under verification. The approach was tested on the MCYT database, using both genuine signatures and skilled forgeries. Moreover, we present the real-world application of the proposed algorithm, namely the complete biometric system for authorizing payment transactions. The authorization is performed directly at a point of sale by the automatic signature verification system based on the hidden signature.

W badaniu porównano kraje pod względem pięciu zmiennych: stopy procentowej, tempa wzrostu podaży pieniądza, tempa wzrostu wydatków konsumpcyjnych państwa, tempa wzrostu gospodarczego i stopy inflacji. Wyniki pokazują, że na podstawie zmiennych reprezentujących politykę pieniężną (stopy procentowe i dynamika podaży pieniądza) można wyodrębnić dwa klastry krajów charakteryzujących się podobnym prowadzeniem polityki pieniężnej. Badanie dostarcza wielu rekomendacji dla polityki gospodarczej, zwłaszcza w zakresie polityki pieniężnej.
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of the monetary policy (and, more broadly, the financial sector) on the real economy in selected European countries, taking into account their fiscal policy as well. The study includes 15 European countries that are not part of the eurozone and covers the period of 2010–2022. In the analysis, we utilise the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method, which is an innovative method for comparing time series, particularly novel in the fields of economics and finance. We compare the countries based on five variables: interest rates, the money supply growth rate, the state consumption expenditure growth rate, the economic growth rate, and the inflation rate. The results show that based on the variables representing the monetary policy (interest rates and money supply dynamics), two clusters of countries with similar monetary policy approaches can be identified. The study provides several recommendations for economic policy, particularly in the field of monetary policy.

Since 2004, 11 post-communist countries joined the EU. It has helped to strengthen their international competitiveness. This was linked to the implementation of institutional and economic reforms, significant technological changes and improvements in the quality of human capital, as well as fiscal stabilisation policies. These changes affected their situation in the labour market. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to assess changes in the situation in the labour market in the EU with particular emphasis on the post-communist countries in the period 2002? 2019. Methods: The situation of countries in the European labour market was estimated using the TOPSIS method. A similarity matrix of changes in the composite variable for each country was then constructed using the Dynamic Time Warping method. On its basis, homogeneous clusters of countries were determined using the Ward's method. Findings & value added: Four homogenous clusters of countries were formed. The post-communist ones belonged to two groups. In one, there were two countries ? Croatia and Slovakia. The rest of the post-communist countries were in a large cluster, which also included Germany, Malta, Finland, Portugal, France and Belgium. Changes of the situation in the post-communist countries in this group improved very much during the analysed period (this was particularly evident for Czechia, Estonia and Poland). It is interesting to investigate whether the reaction of labour markets to changes in the global economic situation in post-communist countries is similar to that in the old EU countries. The similarity of changes can be measured using the DTW method. There is an empirical research gap in this respect. Therefore, the added value is the use of this method in assessing similarities of changes in the labour market situation in post-communist countries in comparison to the Western European ones.

In this paper a new method of maternal electrocardiogram suppression for fetal component extraction from one-channel maternal abdominal bioelectric signals is proposed. The method performs maternal ECG estimation by application of state-space averaging. The estimated signal is subtracted from the original one and this way suppressed. The method parameters allow us to balance between the precision of maternal ECG suppression and the necessity not to attenuate the fetal QRS complexes. A small database of the maternal abdominal bioelectric signals is used to investigate the developed system for fetal heart rate determination. The final assessment is based on the detection performance index. It is shown that by proper choice of the parameters we can tune the system so that it is more effective than the classical approach based on template subtraction.

The work deals with automated recognition of the current state of a bee colony, for continuous monitoring of processes running in a bee hive is of key importance in beekeeping. The dynamic time warping algorithm is considered as a method of analyzing acoustic signals produced by a bee colony. Upon such an analysis one can make inferences about the current state of the colony. We have developed a software module for audio-signal identification, which is to be used as a part of an automated bee colony monitoring system, and a software tool for verification of the module. We evaluated the efficacy of the algorithm, the probability of bee colony states correctly recognized using acoustic signals produced by the colony and consumed computational resources by the example of a queen bee’s sounds recorded during swarming. The dependencies of the signal processing time and the successful pattern recognition probabilities on the frame sample rate and frame size are presented.

Research background: The most important indicators that describe the situation on the labour market are the unemployment rate and the unemployment duration. If both these indicators are high, then the human capital deteriorates. Therefore, it seems justified to analyse the mutual relationships between them. Purpose of the article: The article aims at finding the relationships between the unemployment rate and the unemployment duration, and checking if the mutual courses of these two indicators in the Visegrad Group countries are connected with each other. Methods: The business cycle clock methodology will be used to analyse the relationship between the unemployment rate and the median unemployment duration. Next, the similarity of the course of these two indicators will be analysed by means of the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) technique. Findings & Value added: Amongst the analysed countries, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia were, to a certain degree, similar with respect to the mutual course of the unemployment rate and the unemployment duration. Until the peak of the financial crisis in 2009, the unemployment rate and the unemployment duration decreased. During the next years, the unemployment rate was increasing and after 2-3 years it was followed by the increase of the unemployment duration. The situation improved after the year 2013 ? both indicators were decreasing. In Hungary, on the contrary, the unemployment rate was increasing or steady until 2012, and during the following years it started to decrease. However, the course of the unemployment duration was completely different than in remaining countries. The value added of the article is application of the business clock cycle and the Dynamic Time Warping technique in finding the relationships and similarity of courses between the unemployment rate and the unemployment duration.

Many handwritten signature verification algorithms have been developed in order to distinguish between genuine signatures and forgeries. An important group of these methods is based on dynamic time warping (DTW). Traditional use of DTW for signature verification consists in forming a misalignment score between the verified signature and a set of template signatures. The right selection of template signatures has a big impact on that verification. In this article, we describe our proposition for replacing the template signatures with the hidden signature—an artificial signature which is created by minimizing the mean misalignment between itself and the signatures from the enrollment set. We present a few hidden signature estimation methods together with their comprehensive comparison. The hidden signature opens a number of new possibilities for signature analysis. We apply statistical properties of the hidden signature to normalize the error signal of the verified signature and to use the misalignment on the normalized errors as a verification basis. A result, we achieve satisfying error rates that allow creating an on-line system, ready for operating in a real-world environment.

Opis:
In the light of regularized dynamic time warping kernels, this paper re-considers the concept of a time elastic centroid for a set of time series. We derive a new algorithm based on a probabilistic interpretation of kernel alignment matrices. This algorithm expresses the averaging process in terms of stochastic alignment automata. It uses an iterative agglomerative heuristic method for averaging the aligned samples, while also averaging the times of their occurrence. By comparing classification accuracies for 45 heterogeneous time series data sets obtained by first nearest centroid/medoid classifiers, we show that (i) centroid-based approaches significantly outperform medoid-based ones, (ii) for the data sets considered, our algorithm, which combines averaging in the sample space and along the time axes, emerges as the most significantly robust model for time-elastic averaging with a promising noise reduction capability. We also demonstrate its benefit in an isolated gesture recognition experiment and its ability to significantly reduce the size of training instance sets. Finally, we highlight its denoising capability using demonstrative synthetic data. Specifically, we show that it is possible to retrieve, from few noisy instances, a signal whose components are scattered in a wide spectral band.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic affected the entire global economic system, including currency exchange rates. The main objective of this study is to assess the similarity between time series of currency exchange rates before and during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, the study aims to examine the relationship between the exchange rates of currencies and the COVID-19 time series in particular countries. The Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method was applied to check if changes in the exchange rates were related to the spread of COVID-19, and if they were, to what extent it was so. The use of the DTW allows the calculation of the distance between analysed time series. In this study, it made it possible to group the analysed currencies according to their change relative to the pandemic dynamics. The study is based on data from the Stooq and Our World in Data websites. Data on the 17 studied currencies denominated in the New Zealand dollar came from the period between 1 January 2019 and 10 November 2021, and the COVID-19 data from the period between 1 March 2020 and 10 November 2021. The results demonstrate that exchange rates evolved differently in all the three analysed periods: the pre-pandemic period and the first and the second phase of the pandemic. The outbreak of the pandemic led to the concentration of most currencies around the US dollar. However, when the economies unfroze, a polarisation of the currency market occurred, with the world’s major currencies clustering either around the US dollar or the euro.
Ponadto podjęto próbę zbadania relacji pomiędzy kursami walut a szeregami czasowymi dotyczącymi pandemii COVID-19 w poszczególnych krajach. W badaniu wykorzystano dane pochodzące z serwisów internetowych Stooq i Our World in Data.
