Juan Jacinto Muñoz Rengel (1974) is one of the greatest exponents of the hybridization of the fantastic with other non-mimetic modalities and with popular genre narratives. The mestizaje characterizes, through juxtaposition or fusion, much of his work, generating the ultimate significance of a broader scope. The fantastic is intertwined with adjacent categories, including science fiction, terror and magical realism. It is also commonly combined with the historical, detective, adventure or humorous narrative styles. He merges these diverse modes of invention by transgressing the rigid and normative molds with the aspiration of constructing new literary options. The dissolution of frontiers between the fantastic and other neighboring genres is also potentiated with frequent intertextual nods and suggestive tributes to the traditions of the unusual.

The fantastic is one of the elements in the narrative poetics of Joan Barceló, a seminal Catalan writer of the 70s. The purpose of this article is to analyse the fantastic from a theoretical perspective, including its specific uses in Barceló’s stories and novels, how it works and why. Thus, the paper draws on the concept of the neofantastic to reveal a literary space of aesthetic and ideological transgression that moves among three thresholds: the magical or fairy, the unusual and the absurd or nonsense.

This paper shows how the image of the uncanny Flanders, elaborated in the early nineteenth century by Madame de Staël as well as by French writers and voyagers contributed to the specificity of Belgian francophone literature and especially to the creation of the concept of the Belgian school of the bizarre. He examines the impact of the hetero-image on self-image and the role of literature in the formation and perpetuation of the stereotype of Belgium, land of strange. It reveals how Belgian writers used, petrified and propagated this image to build their difference and show their belgité in order to make it a specificity of Belgium.

This article addresses Enrique Gaspar’s novel El anacronópete (1887) by means of the articulation of the fantastic genre and nationalism. The nineteenth century witnessed a powerful scientific and technological development, which introduced economic, political and social changes. This can be traced in literature, especially in the second half of the century: for example, in the antagonistic positions between Emilio Ferrari and Gaspar Núñez de Arce in the field of poetry, or novels by Benito Pérez Galdós as Doña Perfecta (1876), in which the tension between the countryside and the city is compared to that existing between tradition and modernity. In this context, the value of Gaspar's novel surpasses the anecdote of presenting the first time machine in literature, eight years before Wells’s. Its value lies in the way in which, starting from the articulation of scientific and literary discourse, it expands the limits of the fantastic while using the procedure to address the question of national identity. The action takes place during the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878. The novel shows the popularity of the “famous Jules Verne” in Spain, whose “marvelous hypotheses” will be considered “children's toys in the face of the magnitude of the real invention of the modest Zaragoza neighbour of Spain”. More than a science fiction novel, the text calls for the incorporation of concepts related to the process of creation of national identities from such disciplines as history and sociology.

In the studies of non-mimetic fiction in the Hispanic world, reflections on expressions traditionally considered popular have been consolidating little by little. It is striking that, in this process of academic visibilization, such scarce attention is paid to horror. Often associated with the category of the fantastic, it urges to claim the specificity of this genre as an expression similar to the fantastic; not coincident with it, but, on the contrary, endowed with particular features. The purpose of the article is precisely to illustrate these characteristics. To this end, we resort to sources of various kinds, including those that assume the specific character of horror, and those that study it as part of the fantastic mode. All of them will contribute to the establishment of a solid theoretical basis; once it is fixed, we will proceed to exemplification by means of the analysis of two stories belonging to each of the categories and by the same author: Cádiz-born Félix J. Palma (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1968).

Introduction. A healthy lifestyle can help older people maintain their functional ability and, therefore, satisfaction with life. An important aspect of health promotion is the assessment of lifestyle factors over which patients have some control. Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze the lifestyle of the elderly in urban and rural areas using the Fantastic Life Inventory (FLI). Materials and method. The research group comprised 138 people aged 65–94 years (M = 72.41, SD = 6.90). Participants were recruited from urban 78 (56.5%) and rural 60 (43.5%) areas. The FLI used in this study has 25 closed-ended questions that explore nine domains, including physical, psychological, and social lifestyle components. Results. The overall lifestyle of most seniors was ‘excellent’ (45.7%) or ‘very good’ (41.3%); none of the respondents scored in the lowest category – ‘needs improvement’. The domains that mostly demonstrated the need for a change were related to activity, nutrition, insight, sleep, stress. Participants from rural areas tended to have lower scores in the activity (p= 0.017) and nutrition (p= 0.015) domains. The lifestyle of the elderly is determined by several factors, including age, gender, health status, level of education, and the place of residence. Conclusion. The majority of older persons demonstrated an ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ lifestyle with healthy habits. The adoption of healthy lifestyle patterns, in particular a regular balanced diet and proper physical activity, can help prevent functional limitations among the elderly in rural areas.

The aim of the article is to analyse Michel Bernanos’ fantastic series The Other Side of the Mountain from an ecocritical perspective (among others, the literary text as L. Buell’s “green script”). The series first published in the sixties, constitutes an integral part of the well-known Angoisse collection edited by the publishing house Fleuve Noir, and its author is one of the most prominent figures of the "Fleuve Noir school of the fantastic". The innovative character of The Other Side of the Mountain consists of merging emblematic fantastic elements with protoecological ideas, which were, however, popularised by deep ecology only in the nineties.
Celem artykułu jest analiza cyklu fantastycznego La Montagne morte de la vie Michel’a Bernanosa w ujęciu ekokrytycznym (m.in. tekst literacki jako „green script” L. Buell’a). Opublikowany po raz pierwszy w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku cykl stanowi integralną część słynnej kolekcji Angoisse wydawnictwa Fleuve Noir, a jego autor jest jedną z wiodących postaci „szkoły fantastyki Fleuve Noir”. Nowatorstwo La Montagne morte de la vie polega przede wszystkim na fuzji elementów emblematycznych dla fantastyki z ideami protoekologicznymi, które zostaną spopularyzowane przez ekologię głęboką dopiero w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku.

The aim of this paper is to define and to analyse the fantastic universe of short stories by Manuel Baixauli published in the volume Espiral (2010), an original and highly significant example of modern fantastic literature that has abolished the real and imaginary borders, that is to say a significant example of fantastic literature conceived as a language phenomenon. The conception of reality integrates and naturalises the supernatural and the irrational in a vision that joins multiple dimensions and perspectives of reality. The self-referential component is also of essential importance in this fantastic, which assimilates and exhibits themes and motifs of inherited traditions in a fully conscious way.Baixauli reflects on the ways of perception and representation of reality, in a proposal in which he combines elements that come from some forms of genre whithin the fantastic tradition. And he does it with full awareness of the linguistic and cultural condition of the referents he uses, exploring implicit meanings, metaphorical value, expectations they generate, etc. A literature that, from the point of view of fantastic literature, opts for hybridism and self-reference.

The plot and the presented world of Robert Ervin Howard’s Beyond the Black River are representative of sword and sorcery, a subgenre of fantasy fiction that Howard is claimed to have pioneered. It has been proposed that the worlds in fantasy fiction are coherently organised, natural, and material. Nevertheless, supernatural elements that are not consis-tent with the structure of the universe are present. The struggle between the structured worlds and the chaotic supernatural that is resolved by an intervention of a barbarian hero constitute the essence of the sword and sorcery subgenre. These elements can also be found in Beyond the Black River by Howard, who employs contrastive images to present the super-natural.

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie motywacji stworzenia i ewolucji wizerunku Wita Szostaka jako autora literatury polarnej, dążącego do uzyskania nobilitacji w ogólnym polu literackim.PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Podstawowym problemem badawczym jest strategia autorska wybierana przez uczestnika polskiego pola literackiego w pierwszych dekadach XXI w. mająca na celu uzyskanie nobilitacji, zmianę i umocnienie pozycji w polu literackim. Przedmiotem analizy jest korelacja pomiędzy tematyką i formą twórczości literackiej, miejscami publikacji oraz autorskiej autoprezentacji. W przeprowadzonym badaniu wykorzystano metodologię analizy pola Pierre’a Bourdieu.PROCES WYWODU: Wywód przeprowadzono, opierając się na analizie wypowiedzi Wita Szostaka i wskazywanych w nich kryteriach wyboru konwencji literackich reprezentowanych przez jego utwory, towarzyszących im not autorskich, wywiadów, recenzji i materiałów ikonograficznych prezentujących go jako autora powieści fantasy, literatury fantastycznej i satyry akademickiej. Analizę ich treści powiązano z analizą wykorzystywanych przez niego kodów wizualnych w celu podkreślenia swoich kompetencji jako autora tekstu reprezentującego określoną konwencję literacką. Analiza zebranego materiału ukazuje trzy etapy kreowania wizerunku Wita Szostaka ściśle powiązane ze zmianami jego pozycji w polu literackim mającymi na celu opuszczenie subpola literatury popularnej i uzyskanie nobilitacji w ogólnym polu literackim jako filozofa tworzącego literaturę.WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Efektem przeprowadzonej analizy jest wskazanie na przykładzie ewolucji wizerunku Wita Szostaka mechanizmów kreowania wizerunku autora jako elementu identyfikującego go jako markę w polskim polu literackim po roku 2000.WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Wobec różnorodności uwarunkowań funkcjonowania polskiego pola literackiego należy podjąć jego badania w zakresie przekraczającym badanie procesu historycznoliterackiego, z uwzględnieniem funkcjonujących w nim subpól, ekonomii prestiżu, mechanizmów kreowania marki, presji pól ekonomicznego i mediów.

Artykuł stanowi przybliżenie początków polskiego fantastykoznawstwa, a jednocześnie pełni funkcję wprowadzenia do tomu studiów poświęconych polskiej teorii fantastyki. Scharakteryzowano w nim proces wyłaniania się polskiej teorii fantastyki w polu dyskursu krytycznego i literaturoznawczego, odwołując się do teorii emergencji i biorąc pod uwagę rozmaite wpływające na to czynniki (tzw. atraktory). Szczególną uwagę poświęcono roli Artura Hutnikiewicza jako inicjatora tego procesu.
The intention of presenting the article is bringing forth the beginning of the formation of Polish theory of the fantastic, and at the same time providing a kind of introduction to the complexity of the studies devoted to Polish theories of the fantastic. The article is focused on careful analysis of the process of the formation of Polish theory of the fantastic in the field of critical and literature studies discourses with reference made to the emergence theory with particular concern regarding variety of the so-called attractors that have a considerable impact on it. Special consideration is given to unique contribution of Artur Hutnikiewicz, a distinguished initiator of this process.

In der Novelle Das Fräulein von Scuderi von E.T.A. Hoffmann, die nur beim ersten  Blick ein eindimensionales Werk zu sein scheint, wird das Postulat der Duplizität der dargestellten Welt realisiert, indem der Autor rationale und phantastische Elemente miteinander konfrontiert. Die Handlung der Novelle spielt sich in Paris ab, wo zur Zeit viele geheimnisvolle Morde passieren, deren Opfer durch einen Dolchstich mitten ins Herz getötet werden. Alle Morde sind sich sehr ähnlich: die Opfer sind adelige Männer, die auf dem Weg zu ihren Geliebten die Juwelen mit sich tragen und jeweils dieses Schmuckes spurlos beraubt werden. Die Analyse der Novelle wurde im Hinblick auf die Problematik der Duplizität der dargestellten Welt durchgeführt. Gemäß der romantischen Philosophie der Kunst erscheinen hier alle rationalen und irrationalen Elemente fragwürdig, so dass der Leser nicht im Stande ist, festzustellen, welche der Seiten einen Absolutheitsanspruch verdient. Die Verbindung der Alltagswelt mit der unheimlichen Welt ist in Bezug auf den Goldschmied René Cardillac am besten greifbar, dessen eine bis zur Besessenheit gehende Faszination durch eigene Kunst ihn zum harmlosen Sonderling in der großen Stadt Paris macht. Er steht als der Fremde im bürgerlichen Leben, verstanden von niemand, an der Schwelle zum Wahnsinn. Automatisch entsteht hier die Frage, ob Cardillac, der wahrscheinlich schon in der pränatalen Phase ein Trauma erlebt hatte, überhaupt an den von ihm verübten Morden schuld sein kann? Sind seine Gräueltaten mit dem bösen Stern und den dämonischen Kräften zu rechtfertigen, die der geniale Künstler nicht erkennen und beeinflussen kann?
W noweli Panna de Scudery E.T.A. Hoffmanna, będącej tylko pozornie utworem jednowymiarowym, autor realizuje postulat dwudzielności świata przedstawionego, polegający na zestawieniu ze sobą elementów racjonalnych i fantastycznych. Fabuła utworu zdominowana jest przez tajemnicę dotyczącą mającej miejsce w Paryżu zagadkowej serii morderstw, których ofiary uśmiercane są poprzez pchnięcie sztyletem prosto w serce. Wszystkie morderstwa są popełniane według tej samej zasady: ofiarami są zawsze mężczyźni pochodzenia szlacheckiego, będący w drodze do ich ukochanych i podążający z prezentem w postaci biżuterii. We wszystkich przypadkach klejnoty znikają bez śladu. Analiza świata przedstawionego została przeprowadzona pod kątem hermeneutyki dualizmu. Zgodnie z romantyczną filozofią twórczości elementy racjonale i irracjonalne w utworze podawane są w wątpliwość, co dezorientuje w sposób znaczący czytelnika, niepotrafiącego przyznać żadnemu z przedstawianych światów niezaprzeczalnej racji bytu. Konfrontacja świata codzienności ze światem niesamowitości najdobitniej wyrażona jest w postaci złotnika René Cardillaca, który to, zafascynowany własną sztuką, ogarnięty niezrozumiałą żądzą posiadania wytworzonej przez siebie biżuterii, ukrywa się w społeczności Paryża za fasadą nieszkodliwego dziwaka. Wyobcowany z życia mieszczańskiego wielkiego miasta, przez nikogo nierozumiany, znajduje się na granicy szaleństwa. Automatycznie narzuca się tu pytanie, czy Cardillac, który najwyraźniej przeżył traumę już w fazie prenatalnej, jest winien wszystkich popełnionych przez siebie morderstw? Czy można usprawiedliwić straszne zbrodnie nieszczęśliwego genialnego artysty działaniem złej gwiazdy, na którą on nie ma żadnego wpływu? Czy jest to może działanie mocy szatańskich, z których szaleniec zdaje sobie sprawę?

Opis:
Rozważania prowadzone w artykule skupiają się na postaciach Wiedźm w Makbecie Williama Szekspira oraz trzech jego inscenizacjach z pierwszej dekady XXI wieku (wyreżyserowanych przez Andrzeja Wajdę, Grzegorza Jarzynę i Maję Kleczewską). Wychodząc od niejasnego statusu postaci w samej tragedii, autor analizuje wybrane sceny ukazujące różne sposoby interpretowania ich spotkań z tytułowym bohaterem ze współczesnej perspektywy oraz sygnalizuje korzyści, jakie dydaktyka szkolna może czerpać z odwoływania się do współczesnych inscenizacji Makbeta.
The paper focuses on The Witches as they are depicted in Macbeth by William Shakespeare and in three Polish productions of the play from the first decade of the 21st century (directed by Andrzej Wajda, Grzegorz Jarzyna, and Maja Kleczewska). While pointing out an equivocal status of these characters in the tragedy, the author analyses selected scenes which present various ways of interpreting their encounters with the protagonist in contemporary perspective and suggests how literary education in school might benefit from referring to recent productions of Macbeth.

В статье исследуется группа романов российских писателей-фантастов о перемещении героев в 1970-е годы Советского Союза. Эти романы начали издаваться 5–7 лет назад по большей части самими авторами. В статье формулируются отличия таких произведений от схожих с ними фантастических исторических романов: попадание героя в свою собственную эпоху, отсутствие мотива «оживления истории» и пр. Анализ произведений позволяет сделать вывод, что образ ушедшего советского времени в романах строится не только с помощью описания реальных исторических событий, но и с использованием мифов и стереотипов о СССР. Сюжет опровергает эти мифы, что авторами не оговаривается или вовсе не замечается; тем самым романы становятся моделью советского общества с двойными стандартами. Романы пронизывает ностальгия по позднему социализму, а призывы к реставрации Советского Союза формулируются уже в заглавиях. В соответствии с этим выделяется разновидность ностальгии – императивная; она обладает следующими признаками: отсутствием утопического образа ушедшего времени; активно-действенным характером, что делает ностальгическое чувство противоположным элегическому. Императивную ностальгию, основанную на мифах и стереотипах, разделяют читатели, видящие в Перестройке общечеловеческую катастрофу, разрушившую «прекрасный мир». Им близок, кроме того, разговорно-агрессивный стиль, которым написаны романы, а также образ самодовольного героя. Императивная ностальгия отражает сформировавшиеся в современном обществе потребности в реставрации Советского Союза.
The article examines selected novels by Russian science fiction writers concerning the transition of heroes in the 1970s of the Soviet Union. These novels began being published quite recently, mostly by the authors themselves. The article formulates the differences between such works and similar fantastic historical novels: the hero’s arrival into his own era, the absence of the motive of “reviving history”, etc. The analysis of the novels allows us to conclude that this particular image of the bygone Soviet era is built by not only describing real historical events, but also using myths and stereotypes concerning the USSR. Nostalgia for late socialism permeates the novels, while calls for the restoration of the Soviet Union are already formulated in the very titles. Accordingly, another kind of nostalgia stands out – an imperative one with the following features: the absence of a utopian image of a bygone time; an active character, which makes the nostalgic feeling the opposite of the elegiac one. This imperative nostalgia based on myths and stereotypes is shared by readers who see Perestroika as a human catastrophe that destroyed the “wonderful world”. In addition, they are close to the conversational aggressive style with which the novels are written, as well as the image of a self-righteous hero. Imperative nostalgia reflects the needs for the restoration of the Soviet Union that have formed in modern society.

Opis:
The article discusses the transformation of the Other’s concept in Post-Soviet popular culture, as well as the transformation of perception of “Self” and “Other” due to the emergence of real (state) and cultural borders and demarcations, which appear during the reader-text interaction. The paper explores such novels as M. Galina’s “Autochthony” and “The Little Glusha”, and V. Arenev’s “Gunpowder of the Dragon Bones”, to identify the types of the reader’s comprehension. The readers, in their turn, are divided into groups, which identify “Self” and “Other” in accordance with the division, represented in the novels. The author of the paper explores the version of the time gap (the comprehension of M. Galina’s “The Little Glusha”), as well as the different comprehension of the above-mentioned concepts by Russian and Ukrainian readers, regarding the social and cultural distances between these countries. The presented study explains the awareness of the Other’s concept, as well as recognition of Self, which is represented from the outside of the actual cultural tradition.
