Opis:
Philosophy as a universal system of knowledge and the main corpus of the philosophical terminology consists of international terms. There are cases, however, when philosophers choose to, create a native word instead of employing a wellknown international term. The term Meddelelse, for instance, was introduced by the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. According to him, different aspects of communication are included in this concept to be denominated by the Danish word Meddelelse. Another example in this respect is the national term introduced by the Latvian philosopher Rihards Kūlis for the international term nacionālā identitāte. Contemporary philosophers tend to claim that philosophy does not belong only to the elitist part of the society. If such is the case, the philosophers try to facilitate the comprehension process for the native readers in order to ensure a deeper understanding of definite notions. Hence they endevour to accommodate their writing in the way their readers could fully grasp the meaning of the intended message.

In the paper there are analysed five British and German incongruent civil law terms. German terms appear in the German act of law called Bürgerlicher Gesetzbuch. British terms name the terms characteristic of each of the three separate legal systems: of England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. All terms constitute legal terms according to the definition by Morawski. The research problem is to verify whether the published typology of translation methods used in the Polish-English translation of succession and family law terms (which are civil law terms) encompasses translation methods applied when translating civil terms from German into English. The term translation method is defined according to Hejwowski. In order to determine the translation methods applied while producing equivalents, the definitions of the source terms and the equivalents in question are analysed. Furthermore, the appearance of the suggested equivalents in the sources of the British law as well as the corpora of the English language is verified. Finally, having examined the translation methods employed, it is concluded that the equivalents suggested have been formed with the application of as many as 4 different methods listed in the abovementioned classification. Moreover, the Ukrainian terms denoting the legal institutions discussed have been analysed compared to the Polish terms. With regard to the translation of the terms under analysis from Ukrainian into English two different methods have been employed.

The article has two main goals, one of them being a report on the Third Conference of the Old Polish Linguistic Encounters series, the terms in synchronic and diachronic linguistics and a synthetic discussion of the issues raised during the Congress. In the first, definitely shorter part I discuss the issues presented by the referees. The second part, in turn, is devoted to the analysis of the aforementioned issues from the perspective of the theory of the term. At the end of the article I present science-oriented attitudes that characterize the speakers atthe mentioned conference. I ponder if their problems result from their relation to science itself.

The presentation refers to the entire area of translating legal terminology, in particular to the translation of EU law-related texts that are especially vital for translating the acquis communautaire. This area of translation (and interpreting) services has been developing rapidly. The language used in documents is specialist and, at the same time, specific, due to the terminology used. Both the translator and the interpreter face the responsibility and the obligation to observe and apply translation strategies, consistently selected and considering the already existing and valid names, terms, concepts, definitions etc., by means of such available sources of information as dictionaries, encyclopedias, lexicons or special glossaries. Problems that translators and interpreters may encounter focus, to a large extent, on (un)translatability of certain terms, ambiguity of EU-speak or textual coherence, or the absence of it, which results from unclear, vague or ambiguous style of the original. On the other hand, the challenge for the translator/interpreter is constant care of the quality of the text created in Polish, which substantially affects the standard level and quality of Polish that we use everyday. Quality is the concept in translation and interpreting closely related with successful performance and communication (with all its aspects). The attempt at quality description in this context, apart from subjective impressions resulting from our understanding of the importance of features that good - competent - translation and effective communication should have, cannot be devoid of focusing on three principal factors, i.e., the translator/interpreter (as the text author/producer), translation/interpreting process and product, which is the result of this process and, finally, involvement (and competence) on the part of the translator/interpreter. All the above aspects pose a real challenge for the translator/interpreter focusing on legal terminology.Selected aspects of the aforementioned issues shall be verified in a case study conducted on trainee interpreters.

Folk Terms of Slavic Origin for Traditional Lithuanian Buildings and Their Parts The aim of this article is to give an overview of folk terms of Slavic origin naming houses and their parts and to identify semantic relations of terms – synonymy and polysemy. The article deals with more than 130 Slavisms, the material has been gathered from the main sources of spoken language and folk terminology – common dictionaries, dictionaries and atlases of dialects. Folk terminology of building is a broad, interesting and miscellaneous layer of folk terminology and is characterized by regional use, variety of expressions, figurativeness, abundance of synonyms and polysemy. Terms of Slavic origin amount to a significant part of Lithuanian folk terminology of building and make the largest group of borrowed terminology in this field.Terms of Slavic origin are used to denote almost all buildings of a traditional Lithuanian homestead. A significant part of traditional buildings and their parts have more than one name of Slavic origin. A few terms of Slavic origin can be identified as metaphoric and metaphorical transfer of the names according to emotional associations, external similarity or similarity of function is typical. Almost half of terms have more than one meaning. Polysemous terms name different constructions: building and room, part of building and room; less frequently they denote buildings or rooms of different purpose. Naming generic and specific concepts or denoting building and part of same building is not a prevalent type of polysemy of researched terminology. Ludowe nazwy pochodzenia słowiańskiego tradycyjnych litewskich budynków i ich części Celem artykułu jest dokonanie przeglądu nazw ludowych pochodzenia słowiańskiego, odnoszących się do budynku i jego części, oraz ustalenie semantycznych relacji terminów – synonimia i polisemia. Artykuł dotyczy ponad 130 slawizmów; materiał został zebrany na podstawie głównych źródeł języka mówionego i nazewnictwa ludowego – słowników ogólnych oraz słowników i atlasów gwarowych. Ludowe nazewnictwo dotyczące budynków stanowi szeroką, interesującą i różnorodną warstwę terminologii ludowej, przy czym cechuje się regionalnym użyciem, zmiennością wyrazu, figuratywnością, obfitością synonimów i polisemią. Terminy pochodzenia słowiańskiego stanowią znaczącą część litewskiej terminologii ludowej, odnoszącej się do budynków, i są największą grupą zapożyczonej terminologii z tego zakresu.Terminy pochodzenia słowiańskiego używane są do nazywania prawie wszystkich budynków tradycyjnego litewskiego gospodarstwa. Znaczna ich część ma więcej niż jedną nazwę pochodzenia słowiańskiego. Niektóre terminy pochodzenia słowiańskiego można określić jako metaforyczne lub jako typowo metaforyczne przeniesienie nazwy w zgodzie ze skojarzeniami emocjonalnymi, podobieństwem zewnętrznym bądź podobieństwem pełnionych funkcji. Prawie połowa terminów ma więcej niż jedno znaczenie. Polisemiczne terminy nazywają różne konstrukcje: budynek i pokój, część budynku i pokoju; rzadziej oznaczają budynki lub pokoje o odmiennym przeznaczeniu. Nazewnictwo pojęć ogólnych i szczegółowych oznaczających budynek i jego części nie stanowi przeważającego typu polisemii w badanej terminologii.

Graph algebras establish a connection between directed graphs without multiple edges and special universal algebras of type (2,0). We say that a graph G satisfies an identity s ≈ t if the correspondinggraph algebra A(G) satisfies s ≈ t. A graph G is called associative if the corresponding graph algebra A(G) satisfies the equation (xy)z ≈ x(yz). An identity s ≈ t of terms s and t of any type τ is called a hyperidentity of an algebra A̲ if whenever the operation symbols occurring in s and t are replaced by any term operations of A of the appropriate arity, the resulting identities hold in A.
In this paper we characterize associative graph algebras, identities in associative graph algebras and hyperidentities in associative graph algebras.

This text is an attempt to apply the concept of a legal text unit to the description of strictly defined structures of legal texts, namely the gerund strings. The main attention is focused on the methods used to identify multi-segment terminological structures and on distinguishing them from strings that constitute a combination of linguistic expressions. The overall conclusion of such analysis is based on the indication of the mechanism used for connecting and limiting gerund structures in this scope. Therefore, this work includes, among others, the formal procedure of verification, which allows for distinguishing, with significant precision, the syntactic constructions with gerund forms and similar sequences of terms.

The aim of this article is to present and discuss selected results of a survey study conducted on the popularity and use of particular terms in the field of phonodidactic lapsology. The study shows that specialists in the field of teaching foreign languages and in the field of speech-language pathology use the same terms while referring to different kinds of errors. Also, the definition boundaries of individual lexemes are more or less blurred, depending on the case in which they are used (for example, substitution). Moreover, the definitions of particular lexemes are frequently not precise enough and vary depending on the area of study within which they are used. Due to the fact that one of the criteria for recognizing scientific terminology is its frequency, efforts were made to take a closer look at how teachers of Polish as a foreign language most often define errors made by foreigners which consist in replacing one sound with another.

This paper focuses on the problem of cultural differences with respect to legal terms translation concerning the extradition procedure between Germany and Poland. In this context, the question as to how to tailor German legal terminology referring to institutional and office names to that of the Polish language in order to make the text comprehensible and understandable for Polish readers, e.g., judges, prosecutors or legal representatives, will be considered from a cultural perspective. The study is illustrated by examples from a German prosecutor’s letters to the Polish District Court regarding extradition arrangement.

The aim of this article is to present the ways in which Arnobius speaks of the body and its sexuality, in particularhis linguistic strategies employed to articulate sexual terms. It analyses those fragments of AdversusNationes where the Rhetorician of Sicca Veneria does not shy away from sexual terms describing various bodyparts, yet is far from being vulgar or literal. Arnobius’s apologia constitutes a rich source of lexical materialcovering human anatomy and obscene behaviours. If the most parsimonious behavioral model between an observed behavior, Y , and some factors, X, can be defined as f(Y|X1,X2), then fx1 will measure the impact in behavior of a change in factor X1. Additionally, if fx1x2 != 0, then the impact in behavior of a change in factor X1 is qualified, or moderated by X2. If this is the case, X2 is said to be a moderating variable and fx1x2 is said to be the moderating effect. When Y is modeled via a logistic regression, the moderation effect will exist regardless of whether the index function of the logit specification includes a moderation term or not. Thus, including a moderation terms in the index function will help the researcher more precisely qualify the moderation effect between X1 and X2. The question that naturally arises is whether the researcher must include the moderation term or not. In this document, we provide the conditions in which moderation terms will naturally arise in a logistic regression and introduce some modeling guidelines. We do so by introducing a general framework that nests models with no moderation terms in three scenarios for the independent variables, commonly found in applied research.

The paper reports on a comparative corpus-based semantic analysis of one colour term as it is used in two languages: English yellow and Polish żółty. The investigation of central and peripheral meanings, based on analyses of corpus concordances draws upon the methodology and constructs of cognitive linguistics, such as prototype-based categories, domains, conceptual metonymy and metaphor. The first objective of this parallel study is to determine the prototypical reference points for yellow and żółty, followed by descriptions of those motivations and mechanisms of meaning extensions which lead to ‘figurative’ usages. The results are tentatively suggested in the form of a general network of related meanings, the entrenchments of which are established on the basis of frequencies attested in samples of 1,500 citations. The outcomes confirm a conceptual proximity reflected in the semantics of these colour terms, which seems to be - perhaps surprisingly - incongruous with the popular association of yellow/żółty with the sun. As the evidence provided by the British National Corpus and the Polish Scientific Publishers' corpus (PWN) reveals, the central and peripheral readings are inspired by the imagery of autumnal and physiological changes, while the semantics of both yellow and żółty reflect the significant influence of cultural factors, unparalleled in the polysemies of the other five basic colour terms.

The study concerns the origin of anatomical term (os sacrum) in European languages. The occurrence of this term among European countries demonstrates an obvious dichotomy: on the one side, in European countries belonging to the Romance language group (the south and west of the continent) the Latin wording has been preserved, thus, on the other, in European countries lying to the north and east of Germany the peculiar tracing of the German language was used. The study provides further arguments for asserting that the intensity of synonymy in terminology may indicate the historical region of their origin.

Opis:
Distribution of internal forces in bar structures in relation to rotational flexibility of their nodes is widely discussed in the literature. However, the investigations concerning such structures with nodes flexible in terms of shift are less frequent. This paper presents examples of structures, in which the shift flexibility of lap joints determined their load-bearing capacity and stability, as well as the serviceability limit states. A low-rise dome, a covering of the exhibition hall in Chorzów, which collapsed in 2006, and a mobile telephony tower were depicted. Mechanical models describing rotational stiffness and shift flexibility of various lap joints by means of component method were used. Mathematical model by Kishi and Chen was applied to model the susceptibility of lap joints under alternating loads. In case of the low-rise dome, the results indicated that the failure was determined by joint clearances. In case of covering of the exhibition hall in Chorzów, flexibility of joints resulted in excessive utilization of resistance in certain lattice purlins, which could have initiated the disaster. In turn, flexibility of connections rarely considered in the design of mobile phone towers may result in an excessive sway of the tower legs on which the antennas of the radio link are suspended and thus interfere transmitted signals. The study showed that there is a need to take into account the influence of flexible nodes, not only in the structures sensible to deformations like low-rise domes, but also in the other structures, like mobile phone towers, in which their serviceability limit state is decisive.

The planet Venus, which is the brightest celestial body in the sky after the Moon, takes its astronomical name from the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. It is known in Turkic as Yaruk Yulduzı ‘light star’, Akşam Yıldızı ‘Evening Star’, Sabah Yıldızı ‘Morning Star’, Tan Yıldızı ‘Dawn Star’, Seher Yıldızı id., Kervan Yıldızı ‘Caravan Star’, Kervankıran ‘Caravan-perishing’, Zühre (< Arabic ةرهز), Čolpan and Čoban Yıldızı ‘Shepherd’s Star’. This paper will discuss whether the word Čolpan is etymologically connected with the Proto-Bulgarian title čoban and the Slavic title župan.

This article presents the early stage of shaping Polish terminology connected with the human science, the origins of man and differentiation of humankind in the period when anthropology only began to separate from natural history, and its representatives attempted to make the scope of their research clear and distinct. This process of organising the organic world within the classification systems created for this purpose, including divisions of the mankind on the basis of physical and cultural features of people, was accompanied by an effort to unify scholarly nomenclature and establish a “systematic language”. This was a slow and often chaotic phase because scholars did not object to inconsistent nomenclature at all. In works popularising knowledge and in journalism even more disinformation appeared. The notion of race was accepted as a superior category that was to show a complexity of terms reflecting the divisions of the human kind. This term, from the second half of the eighteenth century used in Western literature to denote individual physical types of man, in the Polish writings was little known and as a rule other notions were in common use instead. Plenty of meanings, diverse and arbitrary application of notions made it necessary to organise this chaos and explain the most typical categories that the Polish authors of the Enlightenment and Romantic periods started to apply in order to describe the diversity of the human world.
W artykule zaprezentowano początki kształtowania się polskiej terminologii związanej z nauką o człowieku, jego pochodzeniu i zróżnicowaniu, w okresie, kiedy antropologia dopiero zaczynała wyodrębniać się z historii naturalnej, a jej przedstawiciele próbowali doprecyzować zakres badanego przedmiotu. Procesowi uporządkowania świata organicznego w ramach powstałych systemów klasyfikacyjnych, w tym podziałów rodzaju ludzkiego ze względu na cechy fizyczne i kulturowe, towarzyszyło ujednolicenie nazewnictwa naukowego, tworzenie „języka systematycznego”. Jego powstawanie dokonywało się powoli, często chaotycznie za sprawą samych badaczy, którym nie przeszkadzała nomenklaturowa niekonsekwencja. Jeszcze większa dezinformacja panowała w pracach popularyzujących wiedzę i publicystyce. Za kategorię nadrzędną, która posłużyła do ukazania złożoności formowania się terminów związanych z podziałami ludzkości, przyjęto pojęcie rasy. Termin ten, używany w literaturze zachodniej do opisów odrębnych typów fizycznych człowieka od drugiej połowy XVIII wieku w piśmiennictwie polskim był słabo upowszechniony i konsekwentnie zastępowany innymi określeniami. Bogactwo znaczeń, różnorodność i dowolność ich stosowania zrodziły potrzebę uporządkowania tego pojęciowego zamieszania i wyjaśnienia najbardziej typowych kategorii, które służyły polskim autorom formacji oświeceniowej i romantycznej do opisów zróżnicowania świata ludzkiego.

Opis:
Swahili kinship terms are highly polysemous and occur in many figurative meanings out of which some are fully conventionalized in language usage. The article focuses on a specific case of such extensions which metaphorically frames an unrelated person as one’s kin. The usage patterns of this “fictive” kinship will be analyzed in various pragmatic contexts demonstrating their illocutionary and perlocutionary effects. In addition, it will be shown that this particular extension, as well as other multiple figurative uses of kinship terms correlate with the Swahili cultural model and the high appreciation of one’s family in the community’s system of values.

The paper focuses on multicompound English economic terms with colorative components that constitute a large lexis group, creating constant challenges for translators of economic literature. The introductory part briefly outlines the cognitive aspects of terminology research and discusses advantages of descriptive approach toward economic terminology. Then, it is demonstrated that terminology displays emotive and expressive content by means of connotations as well as such tools as colour-related metaphors. The general trend within this terminological group is the diversity of metaphorical associations that influenced term-formation and the diversity of translating keys that can give the right semantic insight to the translator. Finally, colorative term compounds in economic terminology are regarded as a challenge posed in the context of translation.

The paper constitutes an attempt to apply methods used in linguistics and in terminology studies based on jurisprudence in order to compare specialist vocabulary from the field of Polish and German labour law. The presentation is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part contains a brief description of the bilateral and unilateral methods used in contrastive linguistics, and subsequently presents methods of legal comparative studies applicable to terminology studies as well as relations observable between lexemes of general and specialist language. The empirical part discusses selected terms of Polish and German labour law which were a subject of a comparative analysis conducted with the help of the methods described in the theoretical part. The paper ends with a summary and conclusions stemming from the analysis.
