Opis:: This article discusses the political representation of indigenous women considering its symbolic dimension. It assumes that analyses about the descriptive and substantive representation of groups underrepresented in the State (such as indigenous people and women) are important but insufficient to understand the way in which the politicization and participation of indigenous women in the public space develops. Hence, what is analyzed is how symbolic representation is shaped and the uses it acquires among indigenous peoples (as assertion or excuse) and within the State (as folklorization). This analysis is based on secondary (documentary) information for the Latin American region and primary information: life stories and in-depth interviews, carried out between the years 2001 and 2017, with social and political figures of different indigenous peoples from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Panama.
El presente artículo aborda la representación política de las mujeres indígenas a partir de considerar su dimensión simbólica. Se parte del supuesto de que los análisis sobre la representación descriptiva y sustantiva de grupos subrepresentados en el Estado (como indígenas y mujeres) son importantes, pero insuficientes para comprender el modo en que se desarrolla la politización y la participación de las mujeres indígenas en el espacio público. Se analiza, entonces, cómo se configura la representación simbólica y los usos que ésta asume entre los pueblos indígenas (como afirmación o como excusa) y en el Estado (como folklorización). El análisis está basado en información secundaria (documental) para la región latinoamericana e información primaria: entrevistas en profundidad e historias de vida realizadas, entre los años 2001 y 2017, a referentes sociales y políticos/políticas de diferentes pueblos indígenas en Argentina, Bolivia, Chile y Panamá.

Opis:: W ostatnich latach pojawiły się metody symbolicznego reprezentowania szeregów czasowych. Te badania są zasadniczo motywowane względami praktycznymi, takimi jak oszczędzanie pamięci lub szybkie przeszukiwanie baz danych. Niektóre wyniki w temacie symbolicznego reprezentowania szeregów czasowych sugerują, że zapis skrócony może nawet poprawić wyniki grupowania. Artykuł zawiera propozycję nowego algorytmu ukierunkowanego na zagadnienie skróconej symbolicznej reprezentacji szeregów czasowych, a w szczególności na efektywne grupowanie szeregów. Idea propozycji polega na wykorzystaniu techniki PAA (piecewise aggregate approximation) z następną analizą korelacji otrzymanych segmentów szeregu. Podstawowym celem artykułu jest modyfikacja techniki PAA ukierunkowana na możliwość dalszego grupowania szeregów w ich skróconym zapisie. Próbowano również znaleźć odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: „Czy zadanie grupowania szeregów czasowych w ich oryginalnej postaci ma sens?”, „Ile pamięci można oszczędzić, stosując nowy algorytm?”. Efektywność nowego algorytmu została zbadana na empirycznych zbiorach danych szeregów czasowych. Wyniki pokazują, że nowa propozycja jest dość efektywna przy bardzo nikłym stopniu parametryzacji wymaganym od użytkownika.
In recent years a couple of methods aimed at time series symbolic representation have been introduced or developed. This activity is mainly justified by practical considerations such memory savings or fast data base searching. However, some results suggest that in the subject of time series clustering symbolic representation can even upgrade the results of clustering. The article contains a proposal of a new algorithm directed at the task of time series abridged symbolic representation with the emphasis on efficient time series clustering. The idea of the proposal is based on the PAA (piecewise aggregate approximation) technique followed by segmentwise correlation analysis. The primary goal of the article is to upgrade the quality of the PAA technique with respect to possible time series clustering (its speed and quality). We also tried to answer the following questions. Is the task of time series clustering in their original form reasonable? How much memory can we save using the new algorithm? The efficiency of the new algorithm was investigated on empirical time series data sets. The results prove that the new proposal is quite effective with a very limited amount of parametric user interference needed.

Opis:: Mathematics is an abstract science, it uses a specific symbolic language, a kind of code that is difficult for children to comprehend. Using operation signs and numbers is not simple and obvious for them. The learning of mathematics by children cannot therefore be based on symbols alone. Action is needed first. However, since there is a large gap between an action and a symbol, it is necessary to support the teaching of mathematics with graphic means. Introducing a graphic element as a kind of methodological aid requires careful preparation, motivation and embedding it in previous physical activities performed by children. Otherwise, such an item, instead of facilitating the understanding of a concept, hinders that understanding and becomes an illusory aid. This paper describes the role and importance of pictorial representation in early mathematics teaching. Based on selected examples of tasks from textbooks, the difficulties of illustrating mathematical concepts are presented, and appropriate methodological solutions in this area are indicated.
Matematyka jest nauką abstrakcyjną, posługuje się specyficznym, symbolicznym językiem, rodzajem kodu, który jest trudny dla dzieci. Używanie znaków działań, cyfr nie jest dla nich proste i oczywiste. Uczenie się matematyki przez dzieci nie może więc się opierać jedynie na symbolach. Konieczne jest najpierw działanie. Ponieważ jednak pomiędzy działaniem a symbolem istnieje duża przepaść, to ucząc matematyki należy się posiłkować środkami graficznymi. Wprowadzenie środka graficznego jako swoistego ułatwienia metodycznego wymaga starannego przygotowania, umotywowania oraz osadzenia we wcześniejszych czynnościach fizycznych wykonywanych przez dziecko. W innym wypadku środek taki, zamiast ułatwić zrozumienie jakiegoś pojęcia, utrudnia to rozumienie i staje się ułatwieniem pozornym. W artykule opisano rolę i znaczenie schematów graficznych w początkowym nauczaniu matematyki. Bazując na wybranych przykładach zadań z podręczników, przedstawiono trudności związane z ilustrowaniem pojęć matematycznych oraz wskazano właściwe rozwiązania metodyczne w tym zakresie.

Opis:: This research proposes the comparative analysis of the symbolic representations of Maidan in the Ukrainian and Polish media outlets that comprise tabloid and quality publications. Different types of symbols are identified in the news analysis, reports, and feature stories on Maidan. The typology of symbols is worked out on the basis of the Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms and Langer’s symbol theory. The coded types of symbols include symbol-products, symbol-concepts, symbol-slogans, symbol-situations, symbol-processes, and symbolic actions. With the help of the content analysis it is found that some most visible symbols in the media coverage of Maidan coincide in the Ukrainian and Polish print media. These are the symbol-concept “barricade”, the symbol-concept “Berkut”, and the symbol-process “dispersal of Maidan”. However, there are symbols that have either quantitative or qualitative significance in the Polish press and are absent in the Ukrainian media at all, namely, the symbol-product “blood”, the symbol-concept “solidarity”, the symbol-concept “freedom”.
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy porównawczej reprezentacji symbolicznych Majdanu w prasie ukraińskiej oraz polskiej, w tym reprezentacji obecnych zarówno w tabloidach, jak i w tygodnikach opinii. Przedmiotem badania stały się różne typy symboli (tj. symbole-produkty, symbole-koncepty, symbole-slogany, symbole-sytuacje, symbole-procesy, działania symboliczne), wyodrębnione w oparciu o filozofię form symbolicznych Ernsta Cassirera oraz teorię symboli Susanne Langer, identyfikowane w reportażach i artykułach publicystycznych poświęconych wydarzeniom, jakie miały miejsce na Majdanie Niezależności w Kijowie w czasie Rewolucji Godności. Dzięki analizie zawartości tych tekstów udało się ustalić, że najbardziej widoczne symbole są, i w prasie ukraińskiej, i w prasie polskiej, podobne. Wśród nich należy wymienić: „barykadę” (symbol-koncept), „Berkut” (symbol-koncept), „rozpędzenie Majdanu” (symbol-proces). Ponadto w prasie polskiej dostrzeżono symbole, jak też idee i pojęcia je wyrażające, nieobecne w prasie ukraińskiej, w tym: „krew”, „solidarność” i „wolność”.

Opis:: Ostentacyjne przywoływanie patriotyzmu i narodowych symboli, ich polityczna instrumentalizacja i indoktrynacja odbywają się dziś w atmosferze permanentnego sporu tożsamościowego. Rezerwuar postaci i symboli historycznych dostarcza jego obu stronom instrumentów do manifestacji swoich idei i reprodukcji podstawowej antropologicznej dychotomii: „my” versus „oni”. Historyczne analogie służą usprawiedliwianiu obywatelskiego nieposłuszeństwa, a pamięć zbiorowa jest powszechnie włączana w repertuar praktyk kontestacyjnych, szczególnie przez przedstawicieli młodego pokolenia, którzy skutecznie korzystają z nowych technologii komunikacyjnych i kodów popkultury. Dążąc do ustanowienia własnej reprezentacji symbolicznej, przechwytują postawy i narzędzia reprezentowane przez oficjalny dyskurs pamięci, dekonstruują narodowe mity i obalają uprzywilejowane wzorce patriotyzmu. Artykuł ukazuje, w jaki sposób „turpopatriotyzm” i „softpatriotyzm” stały się osiami polskiej debaty o symbolicznym głównym nurcie i peryferiach, a także, jak młodzi Polacy podważają hegemoniczne wzorce świadomości historycznej.
Currently, ostentatious evocation of patriotism and national symbols, their political instrumentalization and indoctrination exists in an atmosphere of permanent identity dispute. The reservoir of historical figures and emblems provides its both sides with instruments to manifest their ideas and multiply the basic anthropological dichotomy: ‘we’ versus ‘they’. Historical analogies are used to justify civil disobedience. Collective memory is commonly included in the repertoire of contestation practices, especially by the members of young generation, effectively using new communication technologies and codes of pop culture. Striving to establish their own symbolic representation, they intercept the attitudes and tools represented by the official memory discourse, they deconstruct national myths, and subvert privileged patriotic patterns. The article presents how so-called ‘turbopatriotism’ and ‘softpatriotism’ become the axis of Polish debate about the symbolic mainstream and periphery and how young Poles discredit hegemonic patterns of historical awareness.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to compare the understanding of the notion of representation in the musicological and sociological (sociology of music) perspectives. Musicologists interpret the phenomenon of representation in reference to the communicative potential of music, its ability to transmit meaning, musical imagination, and cultural practice. “Representation” is the key concept in the semiotics of music, and ethnomusicology. For the sociologists of music, “representation” is a notion usually connected with symbolic interaction. The most important researchers in this area were: Samuel Gilmore (who concentrated on concert production), and David Grazian (dealing with the question of authenticity in culture and art). In a wide context of different musicological and sociological analyses and surveys, this article is only a modest summary of two articles: Roger Scruton’s Representation in Music [1976] (which gave the first impulse to the consideration of representation in musicology), and Naomi Miyamoto’s Concerts and the Public Sphere in Civil Society... [2013], (in which she argues that “the correct phrase is not «representation» but «re-presentation»: the act of continually showing something to the public”).

Opis:: This article attempts to demonstrate that the failure to recognize real conflicts and bring them to representation is the chief yet highly inconspicuous reason behind the regression of ways in which we understand and describe today’s reality. Crucially, this shortcoming has helped to elevate the language of economics to the rank of the basic idiom for the development of mutual representations. As my analyses show, the language of economy has become the principal medium of representation for communities separated by great distances and unable to recognize each other’s existence as rooted in their respective realities, despite the fact that they are deeply interconnected. For this reason, although global dependence and conflict, including exploitation and exclusion, remain faceless, they do find some expression in symbolic indices of anonymous capital flows, represented and made legible in streams of numbers.

Opis:: The purpose of this paper is to examine the mechanisms of classification and discursive representation of the poor and their everyday life, that result in dehumanization and orientalization of their image. Research data (press articles) was analyzed in the framework of theories such as the Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic power, post-colonial studies and discourse theory. The representation of everyday life was analyzed using the theory of real and symbolic localization. The use of the abovementioned theories enabled the author to describe the processes in which the poor are discursively reconstructed as Others. The identity of the “Other” is (falsely) attributed to the poor by localizing them, within the constructed representations of the places they inhabit.

Opis:: Poetic expressions may seem somewhat removed from a pragmatist social science, but the history of the development of Western civilization is such that the (knowingly) fictionalized renderings of human life-worlds that were developed in the classical Greek era (c. 700-300 BCE) appear to have contributed consequentially to a scholarly emphasis on the ways in which people engage the world. Clearly, poetic writings constitute but one aspect of early Greek thought and are best appreciated within the context of other developments in that era, most notably those taking shape in the realms of philosophy, religion, rhetoric, politics, history, and education. These poetic materials (a) attest to views of the human condition that are central to a pragmatist philosophy (and social science) and (b) represent the foundational basis for subsequent developments in literary criticism (including theory and methods pertaining to the representation of human enacted realities in dramaturgical presentations). Thus, while not reducing social theory to poetic representation, this statement considers the relevance of early Greek poetics for the development of social theory pertaining to humanly enacted realities.
