Opis:
Statechart diagrams, in general, are visual formalism for description of complex systems behaiour. Digital controllers, which act as reactive systems, can be very conveniently modeled with statecharts and efficiently synthesized in modern programmable devices. The paper presents in details syntax and semantics of statecharts and new implementation scheme. The issue of statecharts synthesis is not still ultimately solved. Main feature of the presented approach is the transformation of statechart diagrams into Finite State Machine, and through KISS format, functional decomposition and mapping into Embedded Memory Blocks. Embedded Memory are part of the modern programmable devices.

Opis:
In this work a new method of linear circuit design in frequency domain by poles (zeros) distribution optimization is presented. The method, which uses the relationship between poles and appropriate sums of circuit time-constants, does not need the poles determination explicitly. New relationships, allowing us to calculate the time-constants matrix for circuits having capacitors and inductors as reactive elements, have been derived. Thanks to this, the elements of this matrix can be counted in a uniform manner by the transimpedance method. In the first stage of the method the criterion function is generated in semi-symbolic form, while in the second stage the optimization process is performed. The optimization loop does not include circuit equations formulation and solution. Thanks to this fact the method proposed appears to be very efficient. The examples of optimal capacitors and inductors chosen in such a way as to reach the required transfer characteristics have also been included.
W artykule została przedstawiona nowa metoda projektowania elektronicznych układów liniowych w dziedzinie częstotliwości poprzez optymalizację rozkładu biegunów i zer. Metoda, w której wykorzystano związek pomiędzy biegunami (zerami) a stałymi czasowymi obwodu nie wymaga wyznaczania biegunów explicite. W pracy zostały wyprowadzone nowe zależności pozwalające na wyznaczenie macierzy stałych czasowych układu zawierającego zarówno kondensatory jak i cewki. Dzięki temu elementy tej macierzy są obliczane w jednakowy sposób metodą transimpedancyjną. W pierwszym etapie prezentowanej metody jest wyprowadzana funkcja kryterialna w postaci semisymbolicznej, podczas, gdy w etapie drugim jest przeprowadzany proces optymalizacyjny. Tak więc, pętla optymalizacji nie obejmuje formułowania równań układu i ich rozwiązywania. Dzięki czemu proponowana metoda okazała się bardzo efektywną pod względem wymaganego czasu obliczeń. Zostały załączone przykłady optymalnego doboru pojemności i indukcyjności w taki sposób, aby układy posiadały wymagane charakterystyki częstotliwościowe.

Zagadnienie stworzenia deterministycznego opisu zachowania sterownika logicznego (bez konfliktów między tranzycjami) opisanego diagramami statecharts [2, 9] jest zagadnieniem o złożoności problemu spełnialności i jego rozwiązanie poprzez "ręczne" konstrukcje predykatów tranzycji może być dla projektanta bardzo trudne o ile w ogóle możliwe. Referat skupia się na problemie automatycznego doboru predykatów tranzycji w warunkach niepełnej specyfikacji, tak aby maszyna stanów [2, 9] (diagram statechart, rys. 3a) modelowała zachowanie w sposób deterministyczny. W proponowanej metodzie projektant podaje najistotniejsze zdarzenia warunkujące przejścia, a system CAD automatycznie rozwiązuje konflikty tranzycji niepełnej specyfikacji. Podstawową koncepcją automatycznego rozwiązywania konfliktów tranzycji jest utworzenie własnego zestawu wszystkich zmiennych dla każdej tranzycji osobno (podrozdz. 4.1). Nowo utworzone zmienne wyznaczają bazę symbolicznej przestrzeni wektorowej, w której można przestawić wszystkie możliwe predykaty (podrozdz. 4.2). W przestrzeni symbolicznej w łatwy sposób można opisać wyrażeniem logicznym zbiór wszystkich predykatów ortogonalnych oraz zbiory odpaleń wynikające z niepełnej specyfikacji (podrozdz. 4.3). Iloczyn w przestrzeni symbolicznej zbiorów predykatów ortogonalnych i zbiorów odpaleń wyznacza zbiór zestawów ortogonalnych predykatów wynikających z częściowej specyfikacji (podrozdz. 4.4). Wszystkie operacja na zbiorach wykonywane są jako logiczne przekształcenia odpowiednich funkcji charakterystycznych, które efektywnie mogą być implementowane za pomocą binarnych diagramów decyzyjnych [7].
The issue of creating a deterministic behaviour description (without conflicts between transitions) of a logic controller is an issue of computational complexity equal to a classic satisfiability problem. Its solution through by-hand transition predicates construction can be very painstaking and tedious, if possible at all. The paper focuses on automatic transition predicates construction where transition predicates are partially specified by a designer giving only the most essential information necessary to comprehend the controller behaviour. This partial specification causes that a state machine (statechart diagram) is nondeterministic (and hence cannot be technically implemented) and the CAD system task is to transform automatically this partial specification into a corresponding deterministic form.

Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the identities that inform our work as researchers and theorists? In contrast to recent trends towards various versions of instant or short-term ethnography (e.g., Pink and Morgan 2013) this paper argues for the merits of “slow” ethnography by examining the advantages of relational patience, perspectival patience, and the patience required to fully appreciate omissions, rarities, and secrets of the group.

In this paper, we reflect upon our experiences taking a graduate qualitative methodology course with Dr. William (Billy) Shaffir. We highlight Billy’s approach to ethnographic research and his declaration to “just do it.” Rather than just absorbing theoretical knowledge from the literature, Billy taught us to be wary of the dangers of a prior theorization and how it can distort rather than shed light on empirical investigations. Despite his belief that sociological theory is far too often abstract and removed from real-world contexts, he nevertheless provided us with a latent theoretical commitment to concept formation, modification, and testing in the field that guides our research to this day. We explore Shaffir’s agnostic and at times ironic approach to theory and demonstrate how his specific type of theory-work, derived from Everett Hughes’ and Howard Becker’s interactionist perspective on “people doing things together,” influenced how many of his students study occupations and organizations via sensitizing concepts. Billy managed to get us to think differently about how we theorize in the field and how to cultivate a playful and healthy skeptical attitude towards its application. This type of agnostic-interactionism does not dismiss theory outright, but is always vigilant and mindful of how easy it is for practitioners of theory to slip into obfuscation and reification. We conclude with a Shaffir inspired theory-work that argues for the continuing significance of an agnostic stance towards ethnographic and qualitative inquiry; one that continues to sensitize the researcher to generic social processes through which agency-structure is mediated and accomplished.

W tekście przedstawione jest narzędzie badawcze opracowane z myślą o badaniu ubierania się jako działania społecznego. Celem artykułu jest szczegółowy opis techniki (zwanej w artykule „moja szafa”), która stanowi połączenie wywiadu i obserwacji dotyczących zawartości szafy i sposobów użytkowania znajdujących się tam ubrań. Technika ta, poprzez specyficzny dobór materiałów zastanych (ubrania w szafie) oraz etapowy scenariusz badania, umożliwia inny niż tylko dzięki zastosowaniu samego wywiadu dostęp do rzeczywistości społecznej, która toczy się bez udziału badacza. W wyniku jej zastosowania wiedza spekulatywna badanych dotycząca znaczenia ubrania zostaje skonfrontowana z wiedzą pragmatyczną wynikającą z doświadczenia użytkowania ubrań.
In this article I present a research tool which was designed to study clothing as social action. The article describes a technique called “my wardrobe”, which consists of a “wardrobe elicited interview” and observation of existing materials (clothes in the wardrobe). A distinctive feature of this technique lies in the fact that a researcher can get access to social action (clothing) which can hardly be observed otherwise. What is important, the technique allows for the confrontation of speculative and pragmatic knowledge – this is knowledge which comes from lived experience of wearing clothes.

Trust development has been studied from many sociological perspectives. Despite its early ventures, a perspective that lags in its attendance to trust is symbolic interaction. Using data drawn from twenty four semi-structured interviews with Canadian university administrators (UAs), this paper revisits a Goffman-influenced conceptualization proposed by Henslin (1968) to frame the analysis of four trust development tactics: being visible, expressing sincerity and personalization, showing the face and establishing routine activity. Resistance encountered during trust development is also discussed. Findings are compared with previous studies of trust in professional, leadership and everyday life settings. The implications of this paper for future symbolic interactionist forays into the areas of trust and administration are also discussed.

As couples tend to be referred to as “being together,” long-distance partners, who spend most of their time apart and in diff erent spaces, might face a challenge delineating and validating their relationship. Through in-depth interviews with 20 couples in a long-distance relationship, this study explores how long-distance partners linguistically and symbolically mark the boundaries of their relationship, and also transcend any real or perceived gaps between distance and closeness in the process. While they rarely shared a physical space, my participants created joint socio-mental spaces, which enhanced their sense of belonging and helped to expand defi nitions of intimacy and space.

In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and discussing its beginnings, as well as the influence the Chicago School had on the reception of SI in Polish sociology. Furthermore, we differentiate between two trends in the development of SI in Poland. One is connected with the early theoretical elaborations of the SI orientation and translations of classical books representing this perspective; another is linked with empirical work underpinned by SI concepts and the grounded theory approach in empirical research and data analysis. Stressing the importance of translations of classical texts of SI in its reception in Poland, we emphasize the role of field research and applications of SI concepts in sociological investigations that we shortly characterize.

This paper presents the results of a study that aimed to reconstruct the identity changes in the process of becoming an inpatient in a hospital. The notion of identity moves the focus of the study within a hospital away from the functionalist perspective and allows to center on the biographical disruption at the onset of chronic illness. Intersected with the concept of becoming a hospital inmate it illustrates a primary interactionist concern of structure-interaction reciprocity. In first step author presents the classical writings on hospitals and then attempts to reconstruct the illness narratives by employing the theoretical framework of interpretative sociology and the Łódź School of Qualitative Sociology.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań poświęconych rekonstrukcji zmian w sposobach budowania tożsamości w trakcie procesu „stawania się pacjentem” w szpitalu. Pojęcie tożsamości pozwala odejść od funkcjonalistycznego ujęcia instytucji szpitala i skoncentrować się na biograficznym wymiarze choroby przewlekłej. Analiza dynamiki stawania się pacjentem szpitala prowadzona z perspektywy interakcjonizmu symbolicznego ujawnia strukturę wzajemnych interakcji. W pierwszej części artykułu autorka przywołuje klasyczne prace na temat etnografii szpitala jako środowiska wytwarzającego specyficzne narracje pozwalające na stawanie się pacjentem. Druga poświęcona jest rekonstrukcji tych narracji z perspektywy socjologii interpretatywnej i tradycji łódzkiej szkoły socjologii jakościowej.
