Opis:
The paper presents the results of swell measurements of Neogene clays (Posnanian clay) from the Mazovia region with different grain size distribution and mineral composition. The study was conducted with model soil with initial moisture contents of 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%. The basic physical properties of clays, their mineral composition and swelling parameters such as free swelling index and swelling pressure were determined. Free swell index was correlated to liquid limit, plasticity index, clay content and water content. A very high fit was found for a proposed relationship between the free swell index and swell pressure which offers an inexpensive method of predicting swell pressure in the preliminary stages of site investigation.

During the Turonian and Coniacian, up to the early Santonian, the present-day Polish Jura Chain composed a positive submarine palaeotectonic feature referred to as the Cracow Swell, separating the deeper Opole Trough to the SW from the Danish-Polish Trough to the NE. At present the Turonian and Santonian deposits at themargin of the Polish Jura Chain and the Miechów Trough are fragmentarily preserved. They are characterised by numerous stratigraphic hiatuses and the occurrence ofmany unconformity surfaces. One of themost spectacular unconformities is a hardground at the Turonian/Coniacian boundary described herein from the vicinity of Wielkanoc. Its development took place in several stages. Threemain stages can be distinguished with a compositemiddle stage. In the first stage during the early late Turonian, a gradual drowning of the carbonate Cracow Swell took place followed by eutrophication of the environment. The second stage from the latest Turonian to the earliest Coniacian was linked with a crisis of a carbonate sedimentation leading to its cessation. A firmground with Thalassinoides traces was formed, followed by a hardground with bivalve borings and ?Trypanites. Carbonate- clastic sedimentation recommenced at least twice (with quartz arenites), followed by rejuventation of burrows and/or borings, lithification of the sediment, glauconitization and phosphatization, as well as the development of microbial mats undergoing early phosphatization. This led to the formation of phosphatic stromatolites. In consequence a composite hardground was formed. The third stage took place in the late early Coniacian. Carbonate-clastic sedimentation resumed. Deposits, developed as carbonate arenites with quartz and glauconite admixtures (non-phosphatized), filled the last generation of the rejuvenated burrows and finally covered the hardground.

Opis:
Coniacian deposits, ca. 1.5 m thick, cropping out in the Wielkanoc Quarry, north of Kraków in southern Poland, consist of firm, nodular and, less commonly, marly limestones with horizons of in situ, slightly phosphatized hexactinellid sponges and thick-shelled inoceramid bivalves. The succession is composed of foraminiferal-inoceramid packstones with common sand-sized quartz and glauconite grains at the base, passing upwards into foraminiferal or foraminiferal-inoceramid wackestones with or without rare glauconite. A microfacies analysis shows that planktonic foraminifers are the dominant forms, while benthic forms are rare. The facies indicates that sedimentation in the Wielkanoc area on the Kraków Swell, which separated the deeper Mid-Polish Trough Zone to the north-east and the Opole Trough Zone to the south-west, was generally calm (documented by abundant wackestones) and slow (indicated by the dominant sedimentary “coccolith system” and presence of glauconite) during the Coniacian. Rare episodes of non-deposition are recorded by episodes of phosphatization and minor intra-Coniacian discontinuity surfaces. The presence of hexactinellid sponges in the section studied are consistent with a calm environment, below the storm-wave base, with low rates of sedimentation. Subhercynian (latest Turonian–Coniacian Ilsede Phase) local tectonic movements had an important influence on the evolution of the region. They presumably led to subsidence of the Wielkanoc Block during the Early Coniacian. These movements were probably associated with activity on the Kraków–Myszków Fault Zone.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of swell index, swelling pressure and soil suction tests carried out on Neogene clays from Warsaw, depending on the water content, clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite. These clays are considered expansive soils in Poland, as they are vulnerable to water content variations in the active zone, which result in their volume change and, in consequence, cause damage of foundations and other construction elements. A number of physical, chemical and mineral properties were determined for these clays. The swelling tests were carried out on samples precompacted in Proctor apparatus, at various initial values of water content. The analyses have shown exponential relation of swell index, swelling pressure and suction versus water content. In addition, the investigated relationship between the suction and swell characteristics of tested clays shows good correlation as a power function between these parameters. In addition, validity of correlations between fitting parameters of obtained relationships and soil index properties, such as clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite, have been demonstrated. The empirical relations are characterized by high values of the correlation coefficient. A very high fit has also been found for a proposed relationship between the swell index and swelling pressure for tested clays.

Opis:
The topmost part of the Oxfordian limestones, building the Zakrzówek Horst in Kraków, is featured by a network of minute fissures, filled with Upper Cretaceous limestones. Fissures are dominantly subhorizontal, anastomosing and polygonal in plane. They are filled with white limestones representing mostly foraminiferal- calcisphere wackestones, with subordinate amount of quartz pebbles and fragments of stromatolite coming from the latest Turonian-?Early Coniacian conglomerate overlying Oxfordian basement. The fissures are seismically- induced injection dykes. In contrast to gravitationally-filled neptunian dykes the recognised injection dykes were filled by overpressured soft sediments. Foraminifera within some dykes are abundant, and dominated by planktonic forms, which indicate the Early/Late Campanian age (Globotruncana ventricosa and Globotruncanita calcarata zones) of the filling, and hence date also the synsedimentary tectonics. Abundant and diversified keeled globo- truncanids in the Campanian of the Kraków region are recognised for the first time. Other important findings at the studied section include karstic cavities featuring the surface of the Oxfordian bedrock filled with conglomerates of the latest Turonian-?Early Coniacian age based on foraminifera and nannoplankton, and lack of Santonian deposits, which elsewhere are common in the Upper Cretaceous sequences in the Kraków region. The discovered Campanian dykes provide new evidence for the Late Cretaceous tectonic activity on the Kraków Swell related to the Subhercynian tectonism, which resulted among others in stratigraphic hiatuses and unconformities characte- ristic of the Turonian-Santonian interval of this area.

Opis:
Integrative studies of sedimentary and palaeontological topics for unconformity surfaces are useful in basin analysis. A middle Bathonian unconformity surface in the Ammonitico Rosso facies cropping out in the La Mola Unit (Subbetic Domain, Betic External Zone) was studied by integrating ichnological, palaeotectonic, and sedimentological analyses to decipher sea-level, tectonic, and palaeogeographic conditions during its development. The trace-fossil assemblage mainly consists of the Glossifungites (Thalassinoides, Arenicolites, and Gastrochaenolites) and Trypanites ichnofacies elements. Probable Ophiomorpha represents previous softground stages, Thalassinoides and Arenicolites were formed in firmground, Gastrochaenolites reflects an evolved firmground or early hardground, and Trypanites can be attributed to an incipient hardground. The degree of firmness, relative sea-level position, and continuity of deposition were related. The softground stage corresponds to a fall in relative sea level and continued deposition. The firmground (semi-consolidated substrate) probably reflects an extremely low sea level characterized by non-deposition, whereas the incipient hardground stage indicates an initial phase of relative sea-level rise, with an increase in marine current energy. The presence of two neptunian dyke systems reflects significant tectonic activity related to the transtensional deformation that affected the South Iberian Palaeomargin. Lateral variations in sedimentological and ichnological features recorded at similar discontinuity surfaces in nearby areas were considered and related to differences in bottom topography, with associated changes in sedimentation, and to the variable duration of the hiatus.

The Gulf of Maranhão, North Coast of Brazil, is one of the regions in the world with largest tidal ranges. The Port Area of Maranhão, in São Marcos Bay, represents the second most important in Brazil. The port facilities are naturally sheltered from swell, with nautical operations and maintenance dredging volumes directly conditioned by macro-tides, which exceed the 6.0 m tidal range, and associated tidal currents, which can reach 7.0 knots. In order to assess the behavior of sea levels in recent decades, in view of the influence of climate changes on tides in various ports around the world, a period of two lunar nodal tidal cycles of 18.61 years, from 1980 to 2017, was investigated using unpublished data recorded in tide gauges. The trend pattern obtained was analyzed statistically and, unlike many other port areas, a sensitive stability of the mean sea level was noted. An important conclusion is about the reduction in HHW and increasing in LLW, leading to a reduction in tidal ranges, in tidal currents and a significant reduction of the shear stress in the bottom, which may increase the dredging rates in the port areas in the next decades, due to an increasing siltation.

Lateral changes in the thickness of strata and petrophysical parameters within the Zechstein succession (salt pillows and domes) can cause many problems in seismic exploration of the aeolian Rotliegend formations, which are prospective for hydrocarbons. An assessment of the influence of halokinesis on the seismic imaging of the sub-Zechstein strata in NW Poland (Obrzycko–Szamotuły area, to the SW of the Mid-Polish Swell) utilised time-to-depth conversion with different, seismic-geological models. Various, seismic velocities were used in models for the Zechstein and the Mesozoic successions, namely velocities, dependent on the thickness of particular rock successions, on their depths, and velocities, determined from seismic inversion. The results show opposite reflection patterns for the seismic section imaged in the time and depth domains. The synclinal arrangement of the strata boundaries in the depth model is represented by convex-upwards reflection events on the seismic section. The pull-up of reflection events, associated with the sub-Zechstein strata, observed on the seismic sections, is mainly a result of both the greater thickness of the Zechstein salt within the salt structures (pillows, diapirs) and the increase in velocity contrast between the salt body and the Mesozoic strata.

Opis:
Pressure Vessel resulting from an accident scenario is an important aspect in the reactor safety analysis. This paper discusses results of simulations of the water dynamics and heat transfer during the process of an abrupt depressurization of a vessel filled up to a certain level with saturated liquid water and with the rest of the vessel occupied by steam under saturation conditions. During the pressure decrease e.g. due to a break in the steam pipeline, the liquid water evaporates abruptly leading to strong transients in the vessel. These transients and the sudden emergence of void in the area occupied by liquid at the beginning, result in the elevation of the two-phase mixture. This work presents several approaches for modelling of the void fraction, the level swell and the collapse level. The first approach was based on the churn turbulent drift-flux correlation and an explicit analytic equation for the averge void fraction as a function of dimendsionless superficial vapor velocity. The second and the third aproaches were based on dimensionless analysis and purely empirical corelations. The models were verified against independent experimental data. The models represent the Reactor Pressure Vessel of the Integral Test Facility Karlstein (INKA) – a dedicated test facility for experimental investigation of KERENA – a new medium size Boiling Water Reactor design of Framatome. The comparison of the simulations results against the reference data shows a good agreement.
Kontrola poziomu mieszaniny dwufazowej wody w warunkach nagłego obniżenia ciśnienia w zbiorniku ciśnieniowym reaktora, wynikających z pracy awaryjnej jest ważnym aspektem analizy bezpieczeństwa reaktora jądrowego. Artykuł opisuje i weryfikuje wyniki symulacji zjawisk mechaniki płynów i wymiany ciepła w zbiorniku ciśnieniowym podczas gwałtownego spadku ciśnienia. Modele reprezentują zbiornik ciśnieniowy reaktora obiektu testowego INKA (Integral Test Facility Karlstein) – obiektu dedykowanego do analizy eksperymentalnej reaktora KERENA – średniej mocy reaktora wodnego wrzącego, zaprojektowanego przez firmę Framatome. Porównanie wyników symulacji z danymi referencyjnymi wskazuje na zadowalającą zgodność obliczeń.

Opis:
Volume change in expansive soils due to the intervention of water causes swell. A laboratory investigation using two different geosynthetic materials was designed to minimise the swell characteristics. The influence of three parameters, being geosynthetic material [Secutex (ST) and Combigrid (CG)], orientation (horizontal and vertical), and number of layers (1, 2, and 3) on the swell of an expansive soil was studied to better understand the potential for geosynthetics in swell control. The study on the immediate swell characteristics (limited to 24 hours) helps in gaining confidence in the use of geosynthetics in the swell control of expansive soils. From the investigation results, it was found that all three parameters, being type of material, orientation, and number of layers influenced the swell control of the soil. When two layers of ST and CG were placed both vertically and crossed, they reduced the swell of the virgin soil by almost 60% and 44%, respectively. It can, therefore, be concluded that geosynthetics can play an effective role in the swell control of expansive soils.

Opis:
Since electrical drives have become an integral element of any industrial sector, power quality difficulties have been well expected, and delivering genuine quality of the same has proven to be a difficult challenge. Since power quality relies on load side non-linearity and high semiconductor technology consumption, it is a serious concern. The efficiency of the drive segment employed in the sector is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion in today’s market. Numerous reviews of available literature have found problems with the load side as well as with electrical drive proficiency, as a result of the issues listed above. A high level of power quality vulnerability is simply too much. Even the most advanced technology has its limits when it comes to drive operation. Research on the grid-side quality issues of electrical drives is the focus of this article. After field testing of grid power quality, each parametric analysis is performed to identify crucial parameters that can cause industrial drives to fail. Based on this discovery, a machine learning strategy was developed and an artificial intelligence technique was proposed to administer the fault deterrent prediction algorithm. An accurate forecast of anomalous behavior on the grid side ensures safe and dependable grid operation such that shutdown or failure probability is minimized to a greater extent by the results. Additional information gleaned from historical data will prove useful to equipment manufacturers in the future, providing a solution to this problem.

Opis:
This investigation focussed on the plasticity and swell-shrink behaviour of an expansive soil that was stabilized using electro kinetic stabilization (EKS) techniques with cationic fluids for enhancement of stabilization. 0.25 M solutions of calcium hydroxide and calcium chloride were used as cationic fluids. An electro kinetic (EK) cell of dimensions 500 mm x 150 mm x 160 mm with inert graphite electrodes of size 140 mm x 160 mm x 5 mm was adopted for the stabilization process, carried out at an applied voltage of 40 V over a period of 6 hours. After the duration of the test, stabilized soil sample was subjected to Atterberg limits and free swell tests to determine its plasticity and swell-shrink characteristics. The results of the investigation found that both fluids were capable of reducing the plasticity and swell-shrink behaviour of the soil with different levels of effectiveness.
