Opis:
The yellow sugarcane aphid (YSA), Sipha flava Forbes (Homoptera: Aphididae) is an inva- sive insect pest of many graminaceous plants which include cultivated crops, like sorghum, sugarcane, rice, maize and several species within non-cultivated genera e.g. Digitaria, Pani- cum, Paspalum, and Pennisetum. A survey conducted in the Kagera region indicated an infestation by YSA in nine sugarcane varieties grown. This pest causes damage to leaves leading to yellow, purple and red discoloration. This is the first report of YSA infestation in the Tanzanian sugarcane industry. Efforts to develop control measures are still in progress.

The net radiation over vegetated surfaces is one of the major input variables in many models of soil evaporation, evapotranspiration as well as leaf wetness duration. In the literature there are relatively few studies on net radiation over sugarcane crop in tropical climates. The main objective of the present study was to assess the solar radiation components measured and modelled for two crop stages of a sugarcane crop in the region of Rio Largo, Alagoas, North-eastern Brazil. The measurements of the radiation components were made with a net radiometer during the dry and rainy seasons and two models were used to estimate net radiation: the Ortega-Farias model and the Monteith and Unsworth model. The highest values of net radiation were observed at the crop development stage, due mainly to the high indices of incoming solar radiation. The daily average albedos of sugarcane at the crop development and mid-season stages were 0.16 and 0.20, respectively. Both models showed a better fit for the crop development stage than for the mid-season stage. When they were inter-compared, Monteith and Unsworth model was more efficient than Ortega-Farias model, despite the dispersion of their simulated radiation components which was similar.

The present work measures the adsorption capacity of sugarcane bagasse to remove excess lead from groundwater. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption equilibrium, and the effects of four parameters (pH, adsorbent dosage, equilibrium time and particle size) on the adsorption of lead were investigated. Characterization of the adsorbent was carried out through SEM and FTIR instruments. Results confirm that the adsorption of lead takes place successfully on the surface of the adsorbent. The maximum efficiency of adsorption is up to 50% achieved in 5g adsorbent dosage, at an optimum pH 5, with a contact time of 120 minutes and 53 μm adsorbent size at 38.

Uniforming sugarcane management without any knowledge of soil variability could result in some parts of a sugarcane field receiving insufficient inputs, while other parts receive an excessive input. The research aimed at assessing the soil variability and sugarcane biomass along Ultisol toposequences in Central Lampung, Indonesia. Two sugarcane catenas and one forest catena were fully described in the fields. Soil horizons are represented by Ap/Ah/M, E, B, Cc and Cg with dominant clay translocation. The gleying symptom was found only in the lower slope to depression. The concretion depths can be used as an erosion indicator if the soil parent material is well characterized. Soil P has a maximum value of Ap horizon and decreases with the depth and no effect of internal erosion in the form of soil P accumulation in subsoils can be observed, except for the colluviated horizon. Kaolinite clay is dominantly found to buffer the changes in pH, except Ap horizon of sugarcane. The organic C depends on the pedogenesis and catena form. Al saturation indicates that the dominant soil weathering is intensive. Al saturation in the Ap horizon (Catena G1; G2) was reduced from 80% to 20–40% caused by liming and fertilization. The catena position was the main factor causing the increasing soil variability, which was responsible for the variability of sugarcane biomass. The sugarcane biomass increased with decreasing slopes. The highest biomass was found in the depression (105 tones/ha) if the sedimentation process is characterized by the formation horizon M and accompanied by the nutrient accumulation from the hilltops.

Sweet sorghum juice and traditional ethanol substrate i.e. sugarcane molasses were used for ethanol production in this work. At the end of the fermentation process, the sweet sorghum juice yielded more ethanol with higher ethanol concentration compared to sugarcane molasses in all experiments. The sweet sorghum juice had higher cell viability at high ethanol concentrations and minimum sugar concentration at the end of the fermentation process. The ethanol concentration and yield were 8.9% w/v and 0.45 g/g for sweet sorghum in 80 h and 6.5% w/v and 0.37 g/g for sugarcane molasses in 60 h, respectively. The findings on the physical properties of sweet sorghum juice revealed that it has better physical properties compared to sugarcane molasses, resulting to enhanced performance of sweet sorghum juice for ethanol production.

Batteries are electric cells that use a reversible electrochemical process. One of the important components in the battery is the electrode. Electrodes in conventional batteries generally contain the B3 material. This study aimed to produce and characterize the bioelectrolytes made from blood clam shells and sugarcane bagasse. This study consisted of four stages, namely the stage of calcination of blood clam shells, the stage of hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse, the stage of making bioelectrolyte paste, and the stage of test parameters. The test parameters performed included calcined blood clam shell morphology analysis using SEM, composition and mineral analysis on blood clam shell ash using XRF (X-Ray Fluorcence), analysis using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and analysis using FTIR spectrophotometry. The characterization of the bioelectrolytes was tested using an AVOmeter or a multimeter connected using a connecting cable and an alligator clip. The best bioelectrolyte results were obtained using a reaction time of 90 minutes and a concentration of acid solution 30% (v/v) with a mixture of shell ash and sugarcane bagasse paste in 1:1 ratio. The best power produced was 0.02 watts.

Opis:
In this research, the upgrading of agro-industrial wastes was investigated by using the torrefaction pretreatment technique. Two types of biomass waste, including sugarcane bagasse (SBG) and palm kernel shell (PKS), were used as raw materials. The operating conditions, i.e., torrefaction temperature and residence time, are between 225–300 °C and 30–90 minutes. The findings show that, in terms of mass yield and calorific value of the solid product, the torrefaction temperature is a more sensitive parameter than the residence time. By increasing the torrefaction temperature from 225 to 300 °C, the mass yields are dropped in the range of 28.79–31.57 wt.% and 28.00–29.88 wt.%, while the effect of holding time exhibits the mass yield decreasing only 3.12–5.90 wt.% and 1.53–3.41 wt.%, for SBG and PKS torrefaction, respectively. In terms of calorific value, higher heating values increase as torrefaction severity increases, varying in the range of 0.29–2.84 MJ/kg, with torrefaction temperature as the dominant factor. Regarding the calorific value, energy yield, energy gain, and energy-mass co-benefit index, the optimal operating conditions for SBG and PKS torrefactions are the same condition as 275 °C for 90 minutes. SBG and PKS bio-coals obtained from torrefaction are promising solid fuels with high calorific value (about 23 MJ/kg), with an energy yield of 73.93–77.41%, relative to coal that could be further utilized for co-firing in thermal power plants.

Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA)
pozzolanic material and compressive strength
Opis:
The materials which are useless and unwanted is called waste product and this waste product is a burden and harmful to the environment. Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is one kind of waste which can be termed as the residue left over from burning sugar cane bagasse. The utilization of this waste may be very economical and can also solve the environmental problem. Silica and alumina are the main element of SCBA which is used as a pozzolanic material. This recycling procedure of SCBA reduces environmental pollution and this is also considered the cost-effective material. In this paper, SCBA replaces the cement as a weight of 5%, 10% and 15% which is considered. After completing the compressive strength test, the result shows that the compressive strength increases when 5% cement is replaced by sugarcane bagasse ash and this is the correct replacement of cement.

Opis:
The present investigation delved into the performance of cement stabilized soil amended with sugarcane press mud (PM), an organic waste residue from the sugar industry. An expansive soil was stabilized using 3% and 8% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and modified with 1%, 3% and 5% PM. Cylindrical samples of dimensions 38 mm diameter and 76 mm height were cast and cured for 7, 14 and 21 days for all combinations considered. After the designated curing periods, the specimens were strained axially until failure to determine the strength of the samples. Samples were also subjected to alternate cycles of wetting and drying and the resistance to loss in weight was determined. The results of the investigation revealed that PM can be considered as a strength accelerator due to enhancement in early strength of the samples at 7 days of curing but beneficial strength gain could not be sustained over extended curing periods considered. However, 1% and 3% PM modified specimens were more resistant to weight loss when compared to pure cement stabilized specimens. Based on the results of the investigation, PM can be considered as a potential auxiliary additive to cement stabilized soil for improving the durability performance of the soil.

South African small-scale sugarcane growers are faced with high production costs that have an impact on agricultural efficiency and their ability to adopt  newly available technologies for production purposes. This study employed the Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) approach and Truncated regression model to analyse data collected from 160 growers. The findings reported technical, cost and allocative mean scores to be 95.6,% 55.2%, and 57.5% in the Felixton region whereas 95.2%, 69.1% and 72.6% were achieved in the Amatikulu area, respectively. The age, extension support, and off-farm income had a negative effect on agricultural efficiency followed by positive effect of experience, education, access to credit and employment that showed positive relationship. We propose government to work jointly with mill owners to train, develop extension officers and subsidise inputs and equipment to address the poor allocation of resources because of financial constraints currently faced by small-scale sugarcane growers.

Polymers of biological origin have become a topic of interest due to growing concerns about the environmental impact of the disposal of plastics. In recent years, the production of ecobenign microbial polymer polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) using inexpensive and renewable resources has gained significant interest as these compounds are highly biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable. This study used leaf endophytic isolate Bacillus cereus RCL 02, obtained from the oil-yielding plant Ricinus communis L., to achieve statistical optimization of culture variables for the enhanced production of PHAs utilizing sugarcane molasses as the sole carbon source. A threelevel and four-factor Box–Behnken design of response surface methodology was implemented to optimize the process variables, namely molasses (carbon substrate), ammonium sulfate (nitrogen source), initial pH, and incubation period, for improved biomass formation and PHA production. The highest growth (14.8 g/l) and PHA production (85.2%, dry cell weight) by the isolate were observed with 47 g/l molasses, 3 g/l ammonium sulfate, an initial pH of 6.7, and 62 h of incubation. Statistical optimization of the process allowed achieving a 1.6-fold increase in the PHA yield (7.8–12.6 g/l) compared with the conventional single-factor system of analysis. The biopolymer thus produced was confirmed as a copolymer of 3 hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyvalerate [P(3HB-co3HV)] using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis and was found to contain 7.8 mol% 3 hydroxyvalerate. These findings clearly indicate the efficacy of the B. cereus RCL 02 isolate in the biotransformation of raw sugarcane molasses to P(3HV-co-3HV), without the need for supplementation with high-cost precursors.

Opis:
Natural fibrous materials have been studied to address noise and high heat indices, but many of the existing studies about natural fibers do not sufficiently support their claims of better acoustical and heat insulating materials. Thus, this study investigated the surface morphology of easily available agricultural materials such as coconut husks, banana pseudostem and sugarcane husk for their potential as sound absorbers and thermal insulators. Fiber pads from the materials were constructed and analyzed for noise reduction coefficients, thermal insulating performance, water absorbing capacity and flame tolerance - using the methods specified in the American Society for Testing Materials. Herein, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied for analytical imaging of the agricultural materials. Noise reduction coefficients (0.80 dB and 0.92 dB), (0.75d B and 0.78 dB) and (0.50 dB and 0.35 dB) each at 800 Hz and 440 Hz, and heat reductions of 2.56 °C, 1.71 °C, and 1.24 °C were obtained from coconut husk, sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem, respectively. The coconut husk also gave the highest water absorbing capacity and high flame tolerance of 56%, compared to that of sugarcane husk (49%) and banana pseudostem (32.67%). The morphology of the coconut husk, after SEM application revealed more diverse microporous cells with varying shapes and sizes compared to that of sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem. Thus, results indicate that porosity affects the noise and heat reduction indices of the fibers. The more porous the material is, the better its potential as sound absorber and thermal insulator.

Opis:
In today's global situation where highly competitive companies demand production efficiently to reduce costs, increase product quality, and customer loyalty, maintenance becomes crucial to achieve this goal by reducing unplanned downtime, reworking of products, and costs. In this sense, the use of models that can represent this type of system, and help managers make decisions more easily, are of vital importance for companies. Thus, a preventive maintenance model for a multicomponent system with different failure mechanisms is proposed in this work. Considering that the objective is to optimize the number and the time of maintenance interventions, that will be done in the system, periodic inspections are carried out in order to minimize the expected costs of maintenance. The optimization was performed with simulation, which proved to be satisfactory, since the decision variables of the model behaved adequately when utilized within the context of an applied case study. In addition, these variables had different performances when analyzed in four different scenarios: the original model of the proposed policy, and three variations attributing costs of penalties.

The accumulation and translocation of trace metals in soil and in sugarcane crop irrigated with treated effluents from sugar industry compared to soil and sugarcane crop irrigated with bore-well water were determined. In the present study the impact of irrigation with treated effluent from the sugar industry on the trace metal contamination of sugarcane juice was assessed. It revealed that the mean concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Mn and Zn in the soil of fields irrigated with effluent and in juice from sugarcane grown on such fields were higher than those from bore-well water irrigated fields. The concentrations of trace metals in treated effluent exceeded the permissible limits of the Indian standards (Central Pollution Control Board-2000). The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in juice of sugarcane grown on fields irrigated with effluent also exceeded the permissible limits of Indian standards and WHO/FAO expert committee recommendations. Their concentrations in juice of sugarcane grown in fields irrigated with bore-well water were within the limits of safety, except for Cd. The transfer factor for Zn was considerably higher than those of the other trace metals. The metal concentrations of sugarcane juice showed significant correlations with those of soil, which was not the case when bore well water was used for irrigation.

This study presents the spatial variability and dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil organic matter (SOM) and soil pH contents at the Wonji Shoa Sugar Estate (WSSE), Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected immediately after the sugarcane was harvested and then analysed for SOC, SOM and pH content using standard procedures. The analysis results showed that the pH value varied between 6.7–8.4 (neutral to moderately alkaline) and 7.3–8.5 (neutral to strongly alkaline) for the top and bottom soil profiles, respectively. The SOM content is in the range of 1.1–6.7% and 0.74–3.3% for the upper and lower soil layers, respectively. Nearly 45% of the samples demonstrated a SOM content below the desirable threshold (<2.1%) in the bottom layer and, hence, inadequate. Moreover, most of the topsoil layer (95%) has an SOM content exceeding the desirable limit and hence is categorized within the normal range. Interestingly, the SOC content showed a spatial variability in both the surface and sub-surface soil layers. A lower SOC and SOM content was found for the sub-soil in the south and southwestern part of the plantation. A further decline in the SOC and SOM content may face the estate if the current waterlogging condition continues in the future for a long period. Overall, the study result emphasizes the need to minimize the pre-harvest burning of sugarcane and action is needed to change the irrigation method to green harvesting to facilitate the SOC retention in the soil and minimize the greenhouse emission effect on the environment, hence improving soil quality in the long-term.

Mniejszą zawartość materii organicznej i węgla organicznego stwierdzono w podpowierzchniowych warstwach gleby z południowej i południowozachodniej części plantacji. Gleby na plantacji mogą doświadczać dalszego spadku zawartości SOC i SOM, jeśli obecne wysycenie gleby wodą będzie występowało w przyszłości. Podsumowując, wyniki badań wskazują na potrzebę minimalizowania opalania trzciny cukrowej przed zbiorem oraz podejmowania działań zmierzających do zmiany metod nawadniania, aby usprawnić retencję węgla organicznego w glebie i łagodzić środowiskowe skutki emisji gazów cieplarnianych, a przez to polepszyć jakość gleb w dłuższej perspektywie czasowej.
