- The paper discusses the plan of hydrogen strategy for Europe, aimed at the decarbonisation of industrial processes and reaching climatic neutrality with respect to the emission of greenhouse gases. The EU suggests joint actions for the integration of energy systems, with an assumption that the main role in this transformation will be played by hydrogen as a raw material, a fuel, or as an energy carrier and storage. The adopted hydrogen nomenclature is presented depending on the hydrogen production technology and the manner of generating electrical energy. It is emphasised that it is the EU’s priority to produce renewable hydrogen with the use of solar and wind energy. A timetable of actions is presented with respect to the production of renewable hydrogen in three stages, altogether until 2050, with plans for the final period (2030–2050) of reaching full technological maturity of the hydrogen process and its large-scale implementation in all sectors of the industry, in which it is difficult to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. An objective and assumptions have been presented for an integrated energy system, with energy efficiency in each sector and in every element of the action to be its supposed key indicator. Tasks performed in Polish gas industry in the years 2007–2020 are discussed, including two financial prospects of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme, related to the country’s energy safety. They constituted a preliminary stage for the announced energy transformation. Attention is paid to the emerging hydrogen strategy for Poland, which is to be a subject of public consultation later this year. It will include the entirety of the abovementioned issues, from the production of low-emission hydrogen, or ultimately from renewable sources, to its transmission and storage and until its end use.
