Opis:
The paper deals with the sense of humor represented in stereotypes and in jokes about various nations. The thesis that 'real is what has real consequences' is examined on the basis of advertisements. The focus of the paper is on Media Markt (consumer electronics retailer operating in Western and Central Europe). One of their campaigns using the slogan 'Ich bin doch nicht blöd' (I am not that stupid) was accompanied with a series of short dialogues between shop assistants and customers from different countries and ethnic groups. As a result of the protests of the Poles and of the Germans of Polish origin, the company decided to stop presenting the spot mocking Poles in Germany and even removed it immediately from its website. The analysis of the scripts present in a spot is carried out and the discussion of the pragmatic context of the issue is conducted. The characteristic features of the xenophobic language and the means of contempt are presented. A thin border between what is funny and what is aggressive is observed in the context of national sense of humor or its lack.

The research presented in the article focused on negative prescriptive stereotypes of femininity and masculinity. The aim of the research performed was to identify definitions of non-femininity and non-masculinity of student women. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey method and a self-completed survey questionnaire on a randomly selected sample of 1152 female students. Statistical processing was performed in the PS IMAGO statistical package. Analysis revealed that female students’ definitions of non-femininity and non-masculinity mainly reflect the traditional model of femininity and masculinity, but attitudes towards the obligatory validity of this model are waning.

The main aim of this article is to analyze the categories of stereotypical image of Polish and German nations on the literary and linguistic levels. The analysis both includes a descriptive overview of Andrzej Stasiuk’s and Wojciech Stamm’s prosaic texts, and provides references to the evolution of a linguistic image of the world in terms of hetero-stereotypical and auto-stereotypical images of Poles and Germans. This paper also examines two novels: Dojczland and Czarna Matka . The author makes an attempt to answer the question of which of the most common Polish-German stereotypes are not mentioned and which are present in the examined novels.

Yet there are still some crucial methodological issues in question such as: what types of stereotypes research models are the most suitable ones within the egalitarian perspective? Does the egalitarian perspective requires specifi c ethical attitudes and imperatives? Does the egalitarian perspective applies to any kind of social stereotypes? The authoress touches the subjects referring to both traditional and modern research perspectives.

Many simplifications can be seen in the discussions on the relations between Poles and Jews. The circling demons of the past and, what is worse, the present also put the mind to sleep, causing more stereotypes and myths than truth in the public sphere. Most of us easily judge others without verifying opinions and facts. Thus, we ascribe the same characteristics to the entire group, no matter how different individuals are. In this way, we create a simplified picture of reality that can function in our consciousness for a long time. It is a natural process, as every person has a tendency to create stereotypes that often lead to prejudice and discrimination.

The article deals with the issue of mirroring stereotypes through language which is presented in this material as an important tool of reflecting opinions, beliefs and judgements about ethnic others. The paper discusses different linguistic means which help to express cultural stereotypes commonly held in societies. On the basis of the opinions, comments and observations of different scholars, the author of the article distinguishes items which are essential for linguistic reproduction of cultural (mental) stereotypes. In his account he demonstrates how closely stereotypes are linked with the linguistic signs in use. Although the paper examines the notion of stereotyping from a linguistic perspective, it also refers to the assumptions of the cognitive and cultural approaches to stereotyping.

The contribution deals with ethnonyms and their relationship to ethnic stereotypes with special focus on Russian and some other European languages. It addresses both methodological and theoretical questions. First, it advocates the use of large electronic corpora for the study of stereotypical usages of ethnonyms and demonstrates how a corpus of linguistic data can enhance the study of stereotypes encoded in linguistic structures. Second, it addresses the relationship between mental stereotypes in the sense of Adam Schaff and semantic associations (connotations) encoded in polysemy, derivates and idiomatic expressions. It is argued that although many connotations indeed do reflect ethnic stereotypes, we can find other cases where the connection is only indirect or has faded away completely. The author comes to the conclusion that notwithstanding a considerable overlap connotations and tereotypes are not identical and, therefore, should be kept apart.

Opis:
Before the age of mass media and mass travel (including tourism), cultural stereotypes were formed and communicated predominantly utilizing literature and other written sources (Fischer 1987). Nowadays, people travel extensively; they can get direct information from radio, television, and social media, yet stereotypes still seem to prevail. The general Czech contemporary notion of Scandinavian societies comes to the fore in the reviews of translated Scandinavian literature and Scandinavian (or Nordic) films, written by professionals and published in the edited press or the largely unedited social media. In these reviews, one can discern certain paradigms that doubtlessly amount to stereotypes. In this article, I will present a qualitative discourse analysis of Scandinavian stereotypes in the Czech reception of the Scandinavian arts, especially literature, taking into account the intertextual and contextual aspects of the Scandinavian ethnotypes occurring in reviews and paratexts in Czech mass media. I focus on two explicitly addressed images: The emancipated Scandinavian woman, and the alleged Scandinavian egalitarianism. Finally, I will resort to Tzvetan Todorov’s typology of relations to the Other. I will try to explain the activist criticism of Czech reviewers, who tend to compare the Czech situation with the Scandinavian one, using Todorov’s three axes describing the relation to alterity.

The Bednarz’s intellectual pedigree as a representative of the Polish School of Reportage’s young generation is presented along with the prominence and weightiness of this tradition for Polish non-fiction writing. It is shown how Bednarz deconstructs the stereotypical image of Japan as modern and liberal state by pointing to social inequalities and legal regulations discriminatory against women. At the same time, the factual layer of the book is praised along with the author’s empathy while conducting interviews with her female interviewees, yet what is criticised is the hardly sufficient emphasis put on the eponymous leitmotif, that is, the flowers in a box.

This paper deals with the representation of Africa in selected British opinion-forming periodicals. The study is dedicated to a comparison of the images of the continent and its inhabitants prevailing in the 19th century, exemplified by „The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London”, with contemporary images represented by the British media, such as the BBC’s „Focus on Africa Magazine”. The emphasis lies on an analysis of the stereotypes occurring in the discussed periodicals and a subsequent defining of the similarities as well as differences in the stereotyping of Africa in both pre-colonial and post-colonial periods. Further, their effect on public opinion is emphasised.

Opis:
Based upon the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, according to which language influences thought, we may affirm how social stereotypes remain bound by stereotyped usages of language. Hence, speaking is never neutral as it is underpinned by a way of thinking, of communicating, of being. The sexist usage of language encapsulates a function of emphasis at the semantic level and an obscuring function in morphological terms. We thus question what sexism in language means in order to inquire as to how the ways we make use of language may influence our ways of thinking and, consequently, our ways of acting.

The Illyrian Provinces, a part of the 1st French Empire which existed in the years 1809-1813, are often portrayed as a political entity which anticipated various projects of the political emancipation of the South Slavs. However, the link between later pan-South-Slavic movements and the Napoleonic political activity is a matter which still remains unclear and deserves some in-depth analysis. Most often the Napoleonic impact on the evolution of the nascent South-Slavic nationalisms is viewed in the perspective of the posterior political attitudes of the Croat, Slovene or Serbian elites towards the French, and their own interpretations of the Napoleonic impact on the pan-South-Slavic movement. The proposed paper will concentrate on the opposite approach and will investigate how French perceived the South Slavs in the perspective of the nascent nationalisms, especially that French propaganda presented Napoleon as the savior of the European nations including the „Illyrian” one. But how French defined this „Illyrian” nation? This question can be answered thanks to the French strive for description of the societies inhabiting Illyrian Provinces.

In the introductory part, the attention is focused on presenting the essence and functions of humor in the light of contemporary humor research, with a special emphasis placed on the interdependencies between humor, language, and discourse on the one hand, and ethnic cultures on the other, which differ in terms of preferred norms and values.

The paper presents arguments for treating language as a tool for cognition and communications. It articulates an opposite view to the one which considers language as an independent module shaping cognition and thinking. According to the conception of the socially – based cognition the mind is a controller of the adaptive behavior, and communication is a strategic action to which language is subjected. The model of the linguistic categories arranges words according to the level of their abstraction; and a number of research results presented in the paper indicate that there is a relationship between the level of abstraction of the words used and the inference related to events, emotions and memory. Recognizing language as a tool for cognition and communication leads to the acceptance of the necessity to widen the language awareness. This kind of thinking is supported by the presented results of research on the relationship between linguistic categories and the stereotypes, communication of the interpersonal distance and the process of asking questions and giving answers.

Who are those Swedes? The stereotype vision of the Swedes in the Polish language and folk culture The aim of the article is a rationalization of the Swedes in the day to day Polish language and folk culture, including the historical and cultural background. The sources from which the material was taken are: dictionaries of the Polish language, dialect dictionaries and mixed folk genres, etc. From the collected material it can be concluded that the Swedes are seen, from one point of view, as Godless invaders from a cold, northern country that had devastated Poland. This way of describing the Swedes is comparable to the characterisation of other foreign invaders, such as Tatars and Turks.

The article discusses a reportage by Karolina Bednarz entitled Kwiaty w pudełku. Japonia oczami kobiet [Flowers in a Box. Japan Seen by Women].

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań dotyczących postrzegania starości przeprowadzonych wśród 170 osób (kobiet i mężczyzn) powyżej 75. roku życia, W badaniach wykorzystano technikę wywiadu skategoryzowanego. Przede wszystkim podejmują role społeczne: dziadków – opiekunów swoich wnuków, osoby wspierającej finansowo i swoje dzieci i wnuki, udzielającej im porad. Ponadto pomagają innym starszym osobom – zazwyczaj sąsiadom. Ich codzienna aktywność, obok wyżej wymienionych, skupia się najczęściej wokół takich czynności jak: czytanie prasy/książek, oglądanie telewizji, uprawianie działki/hodowanie kwiatów, słuchanie radia. Płeć różnicuje postrzeganie i przeżywanie starości. Kobiecy obraz starości różni się od męskiego. Negatywne strony starości są częściej eksponowane przez kobiety (szczególnie takie jak: samotność, poczucie smutku, przygnębienia i żalu, gorzej też oceniają własne małżeństwo, sytuację materialną i bilans życia), a pozytywne – przez mężczyzn.
The article presents the results of research on perception of senility carried out among 170 individuals (women and men) aged 75 plus. The research was carried out using the technique of compartmentalized interview. The results show that elders are prone to point to big shortcomings of the age they have reached. Individuals rarely expose positive aspects of senility, and their opinions fit the promotion of active ageing ideas to a very limited extent. The descriptions of this phase of life created on the basis of utterances of the individuals seem to be partly in accordance with common, stereotypical perceptions of senility, even though the respondents are relatively independent, possess permanent income, are rather satisfied with their health, finances, marriage, previous life, and are very positive about their relationships with immediate family. The cohort mainly undertake social roles of grandparents – protectors of their grandchildren, persons who support financially both their children and grandchildren, and act as advisors. Additionally, they help other elderly people – usually neighbours. Their daily routine, apart from the activities mentioned above, usually concentrates on activities such as: reading the press/books, watching TV, gardening/rearing flowers, listening to the radio. Gender differentiates perception and living through senility. The female vision of senility is different than the male one. Negative aspects of senility are more often expressed by women (especially aspects such as, loneliness, the feeling of sadness, depression, and grief, and they also assess their own marriage, financial situation and life account in worse terms than men do), while men are more positive.

The education system and its role in reproducing gender inequality have been discussed in different European countries for over 40 years. The research-based reports from 16 European countries delivered to European Commission within Exchange of Good Practice on Gender Equality forum created a unique opportunity to learn about the main themes, intensity and stages of development of gender and education discourse across Europe. The analysis of the situation in various countries revealed some differences and similarities in the approach to introducing gender in education between post-communist countries and countries with long-time history of gender equality debate. The areas of difference refer to social perception of gender, discrepancy between official legislation and practice, cooperation with educational authorities, textbooks contents and attitude to sexual education. The major similarities concern teachers’ awareness and attitudes, gender gap between boys and girls in scholastic achievements, segregation in vocational choice and feminization of teaching profession. The country overview allows to locate Poland on the map of this European discourse as well as to show inspiring examples coming from the countries far more developed in introducing gender sensitive mechanisms in educational practice.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to learn about the conditions of practicing football by women and to determine positive effects and negative stereotypes accompanying this discipline, the basis being the opinions of female players, as well as student self-government representatives. The study was conducted among 100 Polish female footballers from Exstraliga, 1st League and 2nd League, along with 31 members of student self-governments, representing all physical education universities in Poland. The diagnostic survey method was employed and the techniques of questionnaire, interview and participatory observation were used. For the statistical inference frequency of characteristics, the chi-square test of independence and multiple correspondence analysis were applied. The analyzes confirmed a significant correlation between the recognition of benefits of playing football by women, the perception of the functioning of negative stereotypes and the sporting level of the groups distinguished. The 2nd and 1st League players associated practicing football with the possibilities for developing their personality traits, physical fitness and health, and promoting the discipline (in each case p ≤ 0.05). All the footballers emphasized the risk of injury. The Extraliga players most often felt the stereotypical perception of female footballers as non-heterosexual (p ≤ 0.05). Attribution of non-heterosexuality to female footballers was confirmed by self-government activists (p ≤ 0.05). Women who played football showed a high tolerance toward non-heterosexual people. The Extraliga players were characterized by the highest tolerance (p ≤ 0.05). CPEU activists represented stereotypical views on the selection of typically feminine sports. Among ten disciplines suitable for women, they did not list women's football. There is an urgent need for public education to combat negative stereotypes concerning women practicing traditional male sports disciplines, as well as for tolerance toward people of a different sexual orientation.

Interdisciplinarity is one of the contemporary lines of research in what are broadly understood as humanistic disciplines (although not only in these ones). It is reflected, among other things, in the megatrends of the 21st century, one of the most significant of which is the drive towards the transition from mono- to multiculturalism. Against such a background the contemporary issues of cultural linguistics and communication are outlined. The main thesis of the paper is that intercultural foreign communication is not a simple transfer of the knowledge of a new culture, but it consists in developing abilities to understand it, to combat prejudice and negative stereotypes with reference to one’s own culture, as well as to the foreign one which is being acquired.

Agnieszka Suchowierska made her debut in 2008 and has published three books so far. Two of them: ‘The fairytale is life or, which fairytale are you from?’ or‘Prince the Snow-White. Gender stereotypes in fairytales’ were written collectively with the well-known psychologist Wojciech Eichelberger. They are tales with appended commentaries in the form of conversations between the authoress and the therapist. Already in her debut novel ‘The fairytale is life’, Suchowierska tackles several difficult subjects and poses important questions such as : how can one see the world?; how to be free?; how to find the essence of things? In ‘Prince the Snow-White”, written a few years later, those questions take on the form of reflection on the woman’s cultural condition. The volume contains new versions of traditional fairytales in which men and women switch their roles. This simple gambit lays bare the power of gender stereotypes and manifests the degree to which contemporary culture allows (or disallows) women to do attractive/enjoyable things traditionally reserved for men only. The third book penned by Suchowierska ‘Mat and the world’ was published in 2015. In as much as the potential target readers of her tales are either young people or adults, the last book is dedicated to still younger readers. It tells the story of a plush teddy-bear, manufactured in China, which, due to a curious twist of circumstances, travels around the world. The bear’s journey becomes a pretext for revealing social inequities as well as presenting different cultures and religions. Mat, the bear, is characterized by optimism, activity and self-control in times of crisis. The propagated attitudes and models of upbringing presented in the story are no truisms. The little volume was awarded The Book of 2015 Literary Prize of the Polish section of IBBY.

Work and broadly understood professional activity constitutes a very significant element of human being’s functioning as it empowers the person, gives the sensation of ability, being independent and needed. Moreover, it is an important part of success while aiming at self-realization. Performing professional work by a disabled person enables him or her to feel socially useful and determines their position in a social hierarchy. It must be said that disabled people constitute the group of people for whom professional work means not only the improvement of their financial situation, but, most of all, it raises their self-esteem. Still, too many disabled people remain vocationally inactive for various reasons; it is not only because of their health. Even though work could give the disabled people some independence, they are forced to fight stereotypes, employers’ ignorance, architectural barriers as well as their own anxiety and low self-esteem. The endless search for the person responsible or blaming others for the present situation will not improve anything. It can only inhibit the process of employing the person with a disability, which may lead those people to adapt demandingness as their way of life. The consequence would be learned helplessness.

The aim of the paper is to present the results of an analysis of the “Chinese Soup” comic sketch performed by the Polish “Ani Mru Mru” comedy group. The text shows in a very condensed way the (auto-, hetero- and meta-) stereotypes dealing with the culture perce- ived as the most distant one. The oppositions between Asian and European cultures be- long to the most often debated issues in a period when the cultures have morę opportuni- ties than ever to melt and meet. The appearance of new characters in the discussed genre is only a reflection of larger changes and a growing interest in oriental cultures. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of cultural dimensions (Kluckhohn, Strodtbeck 1961; Hofstede 2000; Trompenaars, Hampden-Tumer 2002) and language and cultural relations (Duszak 1998; Kramsch 1998; Wierzbicka 1999). The study of humor was conducted with the use of tools proposed in the semantic theory of humor (Raskin 1985) and in the generał theory of verbal humor (Attardo 1994).The major features present in the humorous text may be divided into three groups. The first one is connected with the language which is perceived as very difficult and incom- prehensible, and totally different from the Polish language or any other European language. The second focuses on differences in manners - especialły food habits. The third ca- tegory pinpoints visual differences and strangeness.

It contains descriptions of gender-related psychological characteristics, everyday activities, professions, objects, and appearance. The results demonstrate that gender stereotypes shared by children concern mainly activities connected with a gender role. In the case of other tested variables, they were not regarded by children as gender-specific. The understanding of gender stereotypes among girls and boys did not exhibit any significant differences.

Opis:
One of the key objectives of European Union policy is to equalize the opportunities for women and men in the most important areas of social life. An urgent field for such actions is the solicitude of equal representation of women and men in the media (as follows from numerous studies, the mass media can strengthen or weaken gender stereotypes). Primarily the public media should obey the so-called gender mainstreaming principle – because of the public mission. Therefore the purpose of the presented study was an attempt to determine whether, in the selected TVP journalistic programs with politicians’ participation, women were sufficiently represented. Given that, according to the Quota Act, the electoral lists for the Sejm cannot be less than 35% women candidates, it was expected that there would be at least the same proportion of women and men in the analyzed material. The quantitative content analysis method was used to solve the research problem. The results showed that the representation of women in the analyzed programs was lower than originally assumed. There are therefore grounds for continuing research on the issue of women’s access to the media, especially on determinants, manifestations and socio-cultural consequences of possible gender inequalities in this area.

The goal of the article Stereotypes in Macedonian Jokes is to demonstrate that jokes are based on stereotypes which tend to be consolidated and disseminated by means of jokes. Stereotypes occur in every social group, they hand down social tradition from generation to generation despite the fact that a picture of a group in question has evolved for many years. The article provides examples of Macedonian jokes about various national, social and ethnic groups. These examples serve to present Macedonian prejudices as well as a positive perception of the mentioned groups. The research is based on jokes downloaded from Macedonian websites. The research methodology allows to classify the content into different types of stereotypes: ethnic, national, related to professions or social groups.

The present studies explore how activating concepts pertaining to the origins of interindividual differences affect the processing of stereotypical and counterstereotypical information. The concepts, i.e., nature and nurture, are both assumed to evoke similar stereotypical expectations although nurture implies greater flexibility. The studies show that stereotypical information enhances whereas counterstereotypical information diminishes stereotyping when nurture is activated. In contrast, counterstereotypical evidence challenges what activated nature would suggest and perceivers primed with nature evince stronger stereotyping when they encounter counterstereotypical information. The results also show that priming nature leads perceivers to attribute stereotype conformity to internal causes whereas nurture accredits conformity to situational constraints. Stereotype flexibility is associated with the subjective ease with which perceivers can both imagine counterstereotypical and mentally undo stereotypical evidence.

Stereotype accuracy is a contentious topic. Part of the problem is that typically stereotypes are generic statements whose truth status is unclear due to the fact that they are ill-defined quantitatively. The article focuses on the epistemic aspect of stereotypical beliefs. In the ongoing debate, I side with those who argue against stereotypes being wrong or inaccurate by virtue of definition alone. I propose that, when possible, stereotype accuracy should be assessed in probabilistic terms by inspecting how likely a generic statement is to be true when applied to individual(s) representative of the relevant group(s). This approach applies equally well to investigating the actual and the perceived accuracy of stereotypes.

Ethno-cultural stereotypes are the result of comparing one´s own culture, customs, traditions with that of strangers, identifying and fixing differences between the cultures of ethnic groups. Stereotypical images of different peoples exist even in the minds of those people who had no experience in communication with representatives of these ethnic groups. However, the results of the study of ethnic stereotypes of people who are in direct contact with this ethnic group and see it up close in comparison to people who evaluate it from a distance, often raises more questions than gives clear answers. The solution of these questions raises before the researcher a whole complex of methodological problems. The article will introduce a new methodological approach to reveal ethno-cultural stereotypes in the text culture and in our contemporaries’ common sense perception. To distinguish between people’s individual perception of a particular ethnos and collective stereotypes, the following qualitative and quantitative criteria are suggested: 1) bipolar orthonormal core axes of parameter distribution; 2) the significance of the axis; 3) the degree of consistency of parameters distributed on the axis; 4) the weighting coefficient of testee’s reaction.

This article analyzes how cinematic and TV industries in the United States (“Hollywood” for short) attempted and managed to create a very specific stereotype of Basque immigrants, based on several elements from different sources such as the local stereotypes created in the places Basque immigrants had settled, based on their monopolistic relationship with sheepherding, the influence and misunderstandings derived from being Basque immigrant citizens from two European states (France and Spain) with strong, recognizable national stereotypes, and the mistaken identification that Hollywood has historically made between the Spanish and Latin Americans.

The presented study explores the possibility of creating and implementing educational program which would reduce intergroup bias in realistic high school setting. The project was based on the assumption that there is the need of easily applicable, anti-prejudice intervention, which would be appropriate to introduce into foreign language course books, would be universal in terms of changing negative attitudes and would meet all methodological requirements of language lessons. Crossed categorization and the common ingroup identity model were used as theoretical basis for 30 English lesson scenarios on B2 level (upper-intermediate). It was shown that after the intervention there was a signifi cant change in the students’ attitude toward the outgroup and the outgroup members. The implications of these fi ndings are discussed.

Opis:
In the environment of the current Czechia the phrase “politics of the fourth price category” is quite frequent, mainly in the parlance of politicians and journalist. The foundation of the phrase is in the technical term “the fourth price category” which in the period of the so-called socialism indicated pubs, or public houses of the lowest category. Their “folk” environment was greatly popular in wide layers of population, but at the same time, this category has become a symbol of dubious quality. After 1989, this classification of pubs was abandoned due to radical changes in the form of their ownership. The term the fourth price category, however, survived in public awareness as the unofficial designation of a pub and, in particular (in conjunction with the policy) as a negative symbol used primarily by politicians and journalists to dishonest political opponents. This term thus seems like a clichéor settled, automated template which the Czechs have become accustomed to and some of them have included it in their spontaneous speech.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of the research was to solve the research problem contained in the question: What is the genesis of shaping gender stereotypes and what is their impact on the perception of the professional role of women by men in the army as a formation carrying out tasks for national security? Methods: The methods adopted in the research process are, first of all, a meta-analysis of a wide range of source materials, including publications, scientific articles and information materials, as well as the results of the own questionnaire. The theoretical methods characteristic of the safety sciences, i.e. analysis, synthesis, comparison, inference and abstraction, were supplemented by participant observation. The use of this method was possible because the author cooperated with soldiers many times. Results: The results of the conducted research confirmed that gender stereotypes can significantly influence the perception of the professional role of women in the formations carrying out tasks for security. Women and men are characterized by a different approach to perceiving professional roles. Therefore, gender stereotypes can significantly affect the professional roles of women and men and the sense of occupational security. Conclusions: The most concrete effect of the arguments made is the emphasis on the fundamental importance of the transformation of stereotypes. Both historical experiences and the assessment of the contemporary professional safety environment in terms of stereotypical perception are in line with the needs of ensuring the occupational safety of women and men in formations carrying out tasks for national security.

After decades of research into disadvantages for girls in the educational system, “male underachievement” has recently become a frequently discussed topic in the social sciences. A glance at explanations for the development of gender differences in academic achievement reveals that the disadvantages for males and females are explained differently to some extent, but that gender stereotypes seem to play an important part in most popular theoretical approaches. This article gives an overview of actual gender differences in academic achievement in Europe. Following a short description of the nature and functioning of stereotypes in general, and of gender stereotypes in particular, the article discusses the current state of empirical research on the most important theoretical explanations for gender differences in academic achievement and the role gender stereotypes play in these theories. Finally, open questions – and thus fields for further research – are outlined.

This paper is devoted to three basic problems: gender stereotypes, styles of sexual education and the relation between these two phenomena. The main question is: do the styles of sexual education experienced in a family determine the tendency to use gender stereotypes? Basing on the literature, a hypothetical model of relation between styles of sexual education and gender stereotypes was constructed. The model was a source of investigations conducted by the author and described in the paper. Young adults’ tendency to use gender stereotypes seems to be determined by their mothers’ stereotypes and by three styles of sexual education experienced in their families.

Opis:
Three studies address the role of social consensus on evaluative standards in different comparative contexts. Previous research has documented that self-categorisation at the individual or group level changes social comparison effects in terms of assimilation and contrast. With regard to self-ratings of physical attractiveness, the present studies show that people who focus on group membership can benefit from including outstanding others in their reference group, whereas people who focus on their individual attributes run the risk of self-devaluation. It is argued that high consensus strengthens the association between evaluative standards and group membership and renders the inclusion of outstanding others more likely. Study 3 shows that the need to protect self-esteem moderates the influence of perceived consensus. Stressing the individual self led participants who received negative feedback to exclude outstanding others when consensus was low. Stressing the social self, however, led participants to include outstanding others when consensus was high.

The aim of the study is to analyse the stereotype of the Pole in the context of the Applied Cultural Studies perspective. Four basic areas of research can be discerned: other people’s variable associations concerning Poles; other people’s prejudices and generalizations that influence their attitude towards Poles; the results of Poles’ self-evaluation made on the basis of their current experience; the “social frameworks of memory” which shape the Poles’ ideas concerning their place in history. Since the purpose of this investigation is to reconstruct the mechanism of self-stereotyping, which involves scholars as much as the society they serve, contingent feelings about their situation are of secondary importance.
