Opis:
The present article describes selected aspects of investment casting technology for manufacturing of open-cell aluminium. The main focus is, among others, on the precursor thickening. Two groups of total 30 samples were produced, basing on open-cell polyurethane foam used as the precursor. Each of the two sample groups was thickened with a different type of suspension consisting of carbonaceous substances and organic binders. The influence of the coating mixture type was compared, leading to conclusions regarding the desired composition and fluidity of the suspensions. Both sample groups of the obtained open-cell aluminium had stochastic cell distributions, the average pore diameter was 5.2 mm and the PPI index was 8. The apparent densities were respectively: 0.485 g/cm3 and 0.312 g/cm3 , which reflected the impact of the precursor coating. Additionally, samples from both groups differed in quality.

Opis:
This paper describes a new hexactinosidan hexactinellid Guettardiscyphia zitti sp. n. on the basis of a detailed study of 279 specimens from 12 localities in the southern part of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. All the studied material comes from the basal Bílá Hora Formation (Lower Turonian). The geology and palaeontology of the sponge-bearing strata at studied locations exhibit identical palaeoenvironmental settings: 1 - transgressive character of sediments with low sedimentation rates, 2 - presence of submarine swells formed by crystalline basement, 3 - hemipelagic sedimentation below the storm-wave base, and 4 - the presence of proliferating diverse sponge faunas with subordinate accompanying macrofaunal remains.

Opis:
Przedstawiono wyniki badań utworów jury górnej w dwóch peźnordzeniowych profilach wierceń, które opracowano przy realizacji „Zintegrowanego programu płytkich wierceń badawczych dla rozwiązania istotnych problemów budowy geologicznej Polski”. Utwory jury górnej reprezentują megafację gąbkową. Profil otworu wiertniczego Trojanowice 2 charakteryzuje biohermalny obszar facjalny w obrębie całej przewierconej części profilu oksfordu (od oksfordu dolnego do najniższej części poziomu Bimammatum oksfordu górnego). Profil Cianowice 2 charakteryzuje basenowy obszar facjalny (miedzybiohermalny basen Korzkwi) w obrębie niemal kompletnego stratygraficznie oksfordu.
We present the results of research in two Upper Jurassic drill core sections which were conducted with in the frames of “Integrated research program of shallow drillings to solve the major problems of geology of Poland”. The sections represent the Upper Jurassic sponge megafacies. The Trojanowice 2 drill core records the biohermal Oxfordian facies (from the Lower Oxfordian to the lowermost part of Bimammatum Zone of the Upper Oxfordian). The Cianowice 2 section is characterized by a facies typical of interbiohermal basins (Korzkiew Basin) and shows a nearly complete Oxfordian stratigraphic section. Significant differences of the sea bottom relief shown by the precise biostratigraphic method, evoked various types of mass movements. Rocks representing the effects of such movements have been recognized in the upper part of the Cianowice 2 drill core. The differences between the two regions mentioned above are evident from the beginning of the Late Callovian. We have determined the density of the sponge mummies in the Trojanowice 2 drill core. It varied from a few to 63 mummies per 1 metre of the section. In the 201-m long profile, a total of 2199 “generations” of siliceous sponges were found. In the same profile, we calculated the shortening of the limestone thickness as a result of pressure dissolution (along a horizontal plane). The minimal shortening, calculated as the stylolite amplitude, was averagely 11.6%.

Opis:
The use of commercial sponges in materials science has gained much recent attention. Their unique properties, namely a fibrous, rigid skeleton, thermal stability and resistance to acid and basic hydrolysis, have been the primary motivation to use them in the development of new composites. In this work, a simple method of immobilization of cobalt and silver cations, followed by their reduction using sodium borohydride, was successfully applied for the first time to obtain functionalized spongin scaffolds. Three different materials, labeled Co_spongin, Ag_spongin and Co-Ag_spongin, were prepared. Their morphological and physicochemical properties were explored using various techniques (SEM+EDS, TG/DTA, FTIR). The focal point of the research was the application of the resulting materials in the reaction of 4-nitrophenol reduction with sodium borohydride in water. It was found that all of the composites possess superior activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, achieving high rate constants of 0.31 min-1 for Ag_spongin, 0.52 min-1 for Co_spongin and 0.86 min-1 for Co-Ag_spongin. Reusability tests showed that all of the composites could be reused five times. Additional structural analysis after catalytic application showed no visible changes in the morphology of the catalysts. The results indicate that spongin can be considered as a facile, cost-effective, renewable and environmentally friendly three-dimensional support for use in heterogeneous catalysis.

Opis:
The Anisian shallow-marine Karchowice Beds of the Upper Silesia represent reefal habitats and circum-reefal environments, where biological-mechanical interactions determine sedimentary processes and facies pattern. The purpose of this study was recognition of the interaction between biological and mechanical controls of carbonate deposition. Such interdependence resulted in considerable lateral variability of thickness and lithological features, observed at a distance of 25 km. The western part of the basin is dominated by proximal facies (reefal facies), whereas the eastern one represents distal facies (fore-reef). Sedimentary succession in the western area is twice as thick than the eastern one. It resulted from different rate of subsidence owing to block tectonics, controlled by reactivated ancestral Silesian-Moravian Fault. Small-scale synsedimentary faults confirm syndepositional tectonic activity in the region. Palaeogeographical position caused that the Upper Silesia was strongly affected by monsoon climate, generating storms. These storms contributed to episodic deposition, prevailing during the sedimentation of Karchowice Beds. However, most of time was represented by prolonged non-deposition periods, recorded as interstratal hiatuses, but also by forming of firmgrounds, micritization and coating of bioclasts or substrate recolonisation by organisms.

Opis:
Chitin of poriferan origin represents a unique renewable source of three-dimensional (3D) microtubular centimetre-sized scaffolds, which have recently been recognized as having applications in biomedicine, tissue engineering, and extreme biomimetics. The standard method of chitin isolation from sponges requires concentrated solutions of acids and bases and remains a time-consuming process (lasting up to seven days). Here, for the first time, we propose a new microwave-based express method for the isolation of chitinous scaffolds from the marine demosponge Aplysina aerophoba cultivated under marine farming conditions. Our method requires only 41% of the time of the classical process and does not lead to the deacetylation of chitin to chitosan. Alterations in microstructure and chemical composition due to the microwave treatment were investigated using various analytical approaches, including Calcofluor White staining, chitinase digestion, scattering electron microscopy, and Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that microwave irradiation has no impact on the chemical composition of the isolated chitin.

The objective of this study was to determine the biodegradability of bioplastic materials – sponge cloths – available on the European market that are labeled as 100% biodegradable but not certified as compostable. The test was carried out in a controlled composting environment. The project length was 22 weeks. The emphasis was put on discovering whether the sponge cloths are biodegradable or not. Based on the results thereof it can be concluded that sponge cloths have not decomposed completely but their color has changed and that degradation and physical changes occurred. Samples A1, and A2 have not decomposed completely and exhibited very slow degradation rate. Sample B5 exhibited the highest degradation rate. Samples B3, B4 exhibited high degree of decomposition. The main conclusion from this study is that biodegradation of bioplastics materials strongly depends on both the environment in which they are placed and the chemical nature of the material.

The article is focused on the problem of green infrastructure, which effectively helps to reduce the effects of floods and water deficit in cities. It presents examples of good practices implemented in China. In the end of 2014, China’s national government initiated the “sponge city” project. A “sponge city” is a city built around the concept of managing water in an ecologically sustainable way by imitating natural hydrological cycles in the city, which translates into the restoration of the ability to absorb, infiltrate, store and purify rainwater in urbanized, highly sealed spaces. In “sponge cities”, flood risk management is included in the mainstream of urban planning and has the appropriate legal framework. The intention is to improve urban resilience through rainwater capture, storage and use by means of green roofs, pavements made of permeable materials, tumbles, rigoles, retention ponds, water squares, rain gardens and creating wetlands parks.

Opis:
Part of the Oxfordian carbonate buildups in the southern part of the Kraków Upland is developed as pseudonodular limestones, which represent segment reefs. These limestones are composed of connected, rounded-oval to subangular carbonate pseudonodules. The pseudonodules, densely packed within the limestone, fall out easily under mechanical stress. The recently observed texture of pseudonodular limestones resulted from two stages of chemical compaction. During the first stage, in the Late Jurassic, high-amplitude and low-amplitude stylolites and dissolution seams were formed. The sites particularly favourable for the development of high-amplitude stylolites were the boundaries between already lithified fragments of the laminar, rigid microbial-sponge framework. The low-amplitude stylolites formed mainly in the intercalated wackestone-packstone, which was lithified somewhat later; hence, the dissolution seams originated at the contacts between the rigid microbial-sponge framework and the wackestonepackstone. After Early Cretaceous erosion, which decreased the burial load, Late Cretaceous sedimentation enabled the renewal of pressure dissolution. Thus, some low-amplitude stylolites evolved into dissolution seams. In stylolites composed of both low- and high-amplitude segments, dissolution proceeded at the bases of interpenetrating high-amplitude stylolite columns, with the simultaneous transformation of low-amplitude stylolite segments into dissolution seams. These seams, which formed at the initial stage of chemical compaction, were subjected in turn to further pressure dissolution, giving rise to the formation of horsetail structures. The vertical stress field, which triggered the pressure dissolution processes, presumably resulted in the formation of high-angle and vertical incipient tension gashes. At the beginning of the processes, these gashes remained closed. In the Cenozoic, under the extensional regime generated by overthrusting Carpathian flysch nappes, some high-angle and vertical dissolution seams and low-amplitude stylolites opened up, forming deformed dissolution seams and deformed stylolites. Under the same conditions, the high-angle and vertical tension gashes opened up as well. Subsequently, during the exposure period, unloading fractures developed, partly as a result of the opening of some subhorizontal and horizontal dissolution seams and stylolites. The unloading fractures, along with the already existing vertical and high-angle tension gashes, formed the network changing the limestone into pseudonodules of various shapes and sizes. The open spaces between the limestone fragments became local conduits for karst waters.

Turbiditic silty and sandy intercalations in the Turonian Variegated Shale from the Silesian Nappe (Polish Outer Carpathians) contain numerous sponge spicules among siliciclastic fine-grained particles. The highest amount of spicule admixture is nearly 50%. In such layers, they create spiculitic sublitharenite microfacies. These sponge spicules contain forms belonging mostly to the Lithistida group (97% of morphotypes), with a small admixture of spicules from the Hexactinellidae group. Tetraclones with a high content of different types of triaenes dominate among desmas, what indicates the dominance of sponges from subfamily Tetracladina. The preservation state of spicules is generally poor. The Variegated Shale deposits that contain the sponge spicules were accumulated in a deep sea basin, below the calcium compensation depth. Most probably, the spicules were derived from loose material accumulated earlier in various parts of the basin slopes, from which they were exhumed and again redeposited by turbidity currents during the Turonian times.
