Opis:
The study aimed to investigate effectiveness of forest management zoning in conserving biodiversity of Mabira forest reserve. The study sites buffer, production, and strict nature reserve management zones were purposively selected. This was undertaken through investigating woody species diversity, composition and structure. A total of 60 sampling plots with a size of 20 m x10 m were used to collect vegetation data. Variables such as woody plant species identification and counts as well as diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees were done. The result depicted a total of 65 woody species; 39 in buffer, 19 in productions and 37 in strict nature reserve. Of these, only 9 trees species were found common to all zones and their Sorensen similarity coefficient was 0.2213. The population structure of the buffer and strict nature reserve zones was found to be a J - shape pattern, whereas the production zone shown an inverted J-shape pattern. Higher woody species diversity was depicted in the buffer and strict nature zones with (H’=2. 73512) and (H’=2. 68412) respectively, and lower in a production zone (H’=1. 63628). The evenness index value of a buffer zone was (J =0. 746574), strict nature (J= 0.743335) and production (J=0. 555719). The production zone had shown higher IVI values followed by buffer and strict nature reserve zone. The most important woody species identified based on their IVI value were Broussonetia papyrifera (Production), Acalypha neptunica (Buffer), Funtumia Elastica (strict nature reserve). The existing forest management is effective in conserving the biodiversity of the forest reserve. Nevertheless, the production zone was still suffering from exploitation of the surrounding community, hence serve for protecting the remaining management zones from further human interference. Further investigation is also required on the adjacent community perceptions of the forest management zoning.

Opis:
In the Malta Reservoir a total of 16 fish species belonging to six families were recorded in 2008. In the Nordic multi-mesh gillnets 4528 fish belonging to 11 species, with the total weight of 149.5 kg, were caught. The total beach seine catch was 34348.9 kg, which in terms of the reservoir area of 64 ha amounted to biomass density 536.7 kg·ha-¹. Of 11 species caught with the beach seine roach (Rutilus rutilus) was the most abundant species (485031 fish, 7578 individuals·ha-¹) with the highest share in biomass (24283.4 kg, 70.7%). The average electric catch at two sampling sites in the Cybina River running in the reservoir bowl was 105 kg (which gave estimate of 2.6 ton in all), with a marked dominance of the roach, which constituted 65.4% of fish catch in weight and 93% in numbers. Taking under consideration the results of electrofishing the estimated fish density in the Malta Reservoir in 2008 could reach as much as 577.7 kg·ha-¹. The proportion of predatory fish in the fish assemblage biomass was 20.1%.
W Zbiorniku Maltańskim w 2008 r. stwierdzono występowanie 16 gatunków ryb, należących do sześciu rodzin. W wontony nordyckie złowiono 4528 sztuk ryb, należących do 11 gatunków, o łącznej masie 149,5 kg.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to suppress a known natural focus of fi eld fever exerting an infl uence on animal hosts of leptospires – small terrestrial mammals (s.t.m.) by rodenticide. After repeated application of the zinc phosphide rodenticide, the s.t.m. were regularly live-trapped and checked for leptospirosis by dark-fi eld microscopy and culture of their renal tissue and serological examination. Isolated leptospira strains were typed by help of rabbit factor sera. The deratization infl uenced the s.t.m. structure considerably: the proportion of the dominant Microtus arvalis subjects – the main reservoirs of Leptospira kirschneri serovar Grippotyphosa – were gradually and substantionally reduced and, contrarily, the percentage of the potetial hosts subjects – Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus fl avicollis – rose decisively over time. Changes in culture and serological positivity for leptospirosis of s.t.m. have also been enregistered. The highest original infestation of M. arvalis have slowly but strongly decreased while that of C. glareolus and A. fl avicollis has increased decisively and reached its maximum within the last years of investigation. It is probable that these two animal species have undertaken the leading role in the maintenance of the natural focus of the fi eld fever. In other animal species analogous trends were not registered. Based on these long-term fi ndings, there exists the possibility to suppress only partially and temporarily the epizootic process of leptospirosis in a natural focus that can be desirable in some circumstances (building or free time activities, etc.).

Opis:
We used hyperspectral data from APEX scanner (288 spectral bands in 380−2500 nm spectral range; 3,5 m spatial resolution) to classify five tree species occurring in the area of Mt. Chojnik in the Karkonoski National Park (south−western Poland). Data used to delimit learning and verification polygons were acquired during field research in August 2013, when ground truth polygons were acquired using device equipped with GPS receiver. Raw APEX data went through radiometric and geometric correction at VITO office. To reduce processing time, 40 most informative bands were selected using information content analysis. The Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm was used for classification of the following tree species: Fagus sylvatica L., Betula pendula Roth, Pinus sylvestris L., Picea alba L. Karst and Larix decidua Mill. Final classification had 78.66% overall accuracy with Kappa coefficient equal to 0.71. The best classified species included beech (87.09%) and pine (83.96%), while the worst results were obtained for larch (60.29%). Low accuracy for larch could be caused by the fact that most of larch trees in the research area grow in small patches, which made it hard to specify large enough sample of training data. All classified tree species had producer's accuracy of at least 60%, with the highest value reaching 87%. User's accuracies were from 53% for pine to 85% for beech. It is possible to classify tree species using hyperspectral data with moderate to high accuracy even if the data used lacked atmospheric correction. Further work will focus on improving the classification accuracy and use of neural networks based classification methods. Results from this paper will serve as basis for tree species map of the Karkonoski National Park.

Opis:
The structure of timber sales in forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the years 2008−2015 is presented. The Białowieża Forest is one of the most valuable natural areas in Europe. The data from the reports generated by the State Forests Information System of the Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts were used for the research. The information contained in the forest management plans and nature conservation programs of the surveyed forest districts was also used. The volume of the sold merchantable timber in the Białowieża Forest amounted to 669,072 m3, of which 63.43% was softwood and 36.57% hardwood. Among the softwood assortment, sales of the large−sized timber amounted to 44.42%, while of the medium−sized timber to 55.58%. For the large−sized hardwood, the share of sales amounted to 30.66%, while for the medium−sized hardwood to 69.34%. The small−sized timber was sold at 22,389 m3, with the share of hardwood assortments being 82%, and of softwood 18%. A small share in the sales of small−sized timber is caused by the lack of FSC certification by forest districts, which excludes large industrial companies that buy predominantly the medium−sized coniferous timber assortments. The average price obtained from the sale of timber in the the Białowieża Forest in the analysed period was 134.7 PLN/m3. At a price higher than the average, wood was sold in the Białowieża and Hajnówka forest districts, while in the Browsk Forest District the timber was sold at a price lower than the average. The total volume of merchantable timber harvested in the forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the analysed years, including the small−sized timber, amounted to 686,684 m3, with 691,461 m3 of timber being sold. The volume of the merchantable timber sold at that time was 669,072 m3, which constituted only 0.24% of the total timber sold at the State Forests in Poland.

Opis:
In the Beskid Żywiecki, the combination of abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic factors unfavourable for the growth of trees led to the dieback of spruce stands. The intensification of this process began after the hurricane in November 2004, followed by years of negative climatic water balance. The deterioration of tree growth conditions occurred after the drought in July 2006 and damage caused by the Kyril hurricane in January 2007. The weakened spruces were attacked by the bark beetles, the outbreak of which caused a massive dieback of spruce stands. In order to assess the volume of harvested timber in years 2004−2016, the volume of allowable cut (model volume) was calculated from the stand growth model for each forest district of Beskid Żywiecki. The comparison of the volume of harvested timber with the model volume allowed to determine the rate of dieback of spruce stands. The volume of harvested timber in 2007−2009 exceeded the model volume even 2.5 times. The cuts included mainly deadwood, wind−broken and wind−fallen trees, while the harvest of live trees was scarce. In the period 2010−2013, the harvested volume of live trees accounted for 50−70% of the model volume, the volume of deadwood in the same period was ca. 100% and additionally the volume of blown−down timber after the hurricane was 20−40% of the model volume, which taken together accounted approximately to 200% of the model volume. The execution of such harvesting operations, including silvicultural tasks, did not allow to carry out optimal forest management. The period 2010−2013 saw a downward trend. It was disrupted by the hurricane in December 2013, after which the volume of harvested timber, consisting mainly of wind−broken and wind−fallen trees, increased to 280% of the model volume. Again, the high volume of harvested timber was noted in 2016, (ca. 220% of the model volume). The process of damage to spruce stands in Beskid Żywiecki is likely to continue. A decline in its intensity may occur in the absence of old stands, which to a large extent already takes place in the forests of the Węgierska Górka Forest District. Currently, the most threatened by wind are forests in Ujsoły, Jeleśnia and Nowy Targ forest districts. The least threatened are forests in the Węgierska Górka. This forest district and in the future the remaining forest districts of Beskid Żywiecki, will face enormous challenges to obtain high yield and appropriate species composition.

The study analyses the quantity and spatial structure of the seed bank of the xerothermic grassland located in the Biała Góra near Tomaszów Lubelski (Central Roztocze Region). The seed stock of the bank was compared with the vegetation found in two different patches of the examined grassland. The number of seeds per square meter was estimated at 5328 and 5355, depending on the patch. The seed bank's spatial organisation is clustered. The most important factors determining this spatial distribution are: remaining of the seeds in close vicinity of parent plants, and the "group" dispersal of the seeds and fruits.

Symphyglossum sanguineum

nectary structure
Opis:
Ornithophily occurs in a great number of orchid species but despite this, researchers have largely neglected to investigate their nectaries. The aim of this study is to describe the nectary structure of Symphyglossum sanguineum, a species presumed to be pollinated by hummingbirds. The nectary is located at the free margins of auricles, which form a channel for the passage of nectar. The nectary, which consists of a single-layered epidermis and 2-3 layers of subepidermal cells, is supplied by collateral, vascular bundles. The nectary cells of S. sanguineum, like those of other ornithophilous orchids, have thick cellulose cell walls. A remarkable feature of these nectary cells is the dissolution of the middle lamella and the subsequent separation of epidermal cells. It is possible that this latter process facilitates the flow of the nectar to the nectary surface. The cuticle covering the nectary epidermis has micro-channels, but unlike the other species of ornithophilous orchids studied to date, it neither becomes disrupted nor detached from the epidermal cells. Abundant mitochondria, lipid droplets and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) with an osmiophilic material are present in the cytoplasm of nectary cells. Some plastids with few lamellae contain numerous vesicles and osmiophillic globules whereas others accumulate starch. SER lamellae are often closely associated with plastids and the contents of the former organelles closely resemble osmiophillic globules. Secretory vesicles are common, especially near the outer, tangential wall indicating that granulocrine secretion possibly occurs in S. sanguineum.

Fish condition was determined using Fulton, Le Cren and Clark equations. Average total length and weight of fish was 162.00 mm and 83.00 g, respectively. Males were more abundant than females, representing 70% of the fish caught, and achieved greater total lengths and weights. Age 2+ dominated females and 3+ males age groups. Of the three mathematical models used to estimate fish growth, the 2nd degree polynomial model had the best fit to back-calculated lengths. Males had slightly higher growth rates than females in the first two years of life but comparable in subsequent years. The diet consisted of various benthic organisms that varied with fish age. The most frequently occurring food component was Dreissena polymorpha, which accounted for approximately 70% in the diet of fish with a body length greater than 191 mm.

This study is aimed towards investigating the temporal variation in species composition, diversity and regeneration status of Chilimo dry Afromontane forest in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia. A total of 35 permanent sample plots of 20 m × 20 m (400 m2) each were established in the natural forest, laid out on transects of altitudinal gradients, with a distance of 100m between plots. The plots were measured twice in 2012 and 2017. Three subplots, 5m × 5m, and 1 m2 were laid out inside the main plots for sapling, shrub and seedling data collection. Species composition, diversity, important value index (IVI) and regeneration data were analyzed using appropriate formulas. Data analysis was made using R - studio software. A total of 31 trees and shrubs representing 25 families were recorded, 20 (64.52 %) were trees and 11 (35.48 %) were shrubs. Thereof, 28, 23 and 26 species under highest, middle and lowest altitudinal gradient were recorded. The most dominant tree species were: Juniperus procera, Podocarpus falcatus, Olea europea, Scolopia theifolia and Allophyllus abyssinicus. The species composition, diversity, abundance, dominance and important value index significantly varied among species, altitudinal gradient and slope. The diameter distribution was an inverted J - shaped distribution pattern. The highest species richness and diversity index were found under middle altitudinal gradient, while the lowest species richness and diversity index were found under the highest altitudinal gradient. The mean annual volume increment ranged from 4.223 to 0.228 m3 ha-1 yr-1, while the basal area increment varied from 0.85 to 0.020 m2 ha-1 yr-1. Among the sampled species, ten species had fair, 5 poor and 14 species had no regeneration. In conclusion, the Chilimo dry Afromontane forest is suffering from low recruitment and regeneration. Thus, appropriate forest management options should be implemented.

Opis:
For the last few decades there have been reports not only of the occurrence of new invasive species of European watercourses, but also their increasing expansion. One of such species is the Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii). The present work contains assessment of age and length distribution, condition as well as growth rate and analysis of the parasite fauna of the Amur sleeper from the waters of the Vistula River tributary in its middle course (the Habdziński Canal). During the catch performed in 2017 and 2019, the total of 177 Amur sleepers were recorded in the studied watercourse and a statistically significant sex structure disproportion was observed. Among the specimens caught in 2017 dominant were fishes with lengths of 50.1–60.1 mm whereas in 2019 the majority of the Amur sleeper specimens measured 30.1–50.0 mm. Six age groups were recorded among the caught fish with a clear prevalence of specimens aged 1+ (70.06%). The most frequently recorded parasite of P. glenii was non-quantifiable Trichodina rostrata ciliate for which the Amur sleeper from the Polish waters appeared to be a new host. Moreover, the presence of an acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucii, not recorded in Poland in this host before, was observed in the chyme. Also, accidental presence of larvae of the Opisthioglyphe ranae tremadote, which is a parasite typical of amphibians, was also recorded. Despite unfavourable habitat conditions and increased volumes of biogenic substances in the waters of the Habdziński Canal, the Amur sleeper found convenient conditions to reside in this small watercourse.

The study was carried out from the beginning of June to the end of July 2005 in the Krasiborska Kępa reserve (UTM VV56; 53.848°N, 14.370°E). Three research plots were established, representing various types of use of reedy areas: an unused reedy area, a reedy area mown in summer, and an area mown in winter. Beetles were collected in Barber traps with ethylene glycol as a preservative liquid. Seven traps were set up in each examined habitat. In total 1,145 specimens belonging to 35 species were caught. The relatively small area presented three different carabid assemblages, differing in species richness, abundance, dominance structure and ecological preferences. The highest species richness and abundance, as well as the largest representation of endangered stenobiontic hygrophilous bog species (Trechus rivularis, Carabus clathratus, Carabus menetriesi, Bembidion fumigatum, Blethisa multipunctata, and Oodes helopioides), were observed in the  periodically flooded fen which was mowed in the winter.
W wyniku badań przeprowadzonych w czerwcu i lipcu 2005 roku, na trzech stanowiskach o charakterze torfowiskowym w północno-wschodniej części rezerwatu Karsiborska Kępa zebrano 1145 osobników należących do 35 gatunków. Na względnie małym terenie występują trzy różnych zgrupowania biegaczowatych. Różnice polegają na bogactwie gatunkowym, liczebności, strukturze dominacji i preferencjach ekologicznych. Największe bogactwo gatunkowe i liczebność, oraz największa reprezentacja przyrodnicza cennych stenobiontycznych higrofilnych torfowiskowych gatunków (Trechus rivularis, Carabus clathratus, Carabus menetriesi, Bembidion fumigatum, Blethisa multipunctata, Oodes helopioides) znajdowała się na stanowisku 3 – okresowo zalewanym torfowisku niskim, koszonym w okresie zimowym.

Cochlearia polonica Fröhl. (Brassicaceae) is one of the rarest species in the Polish and European flora and a taxon endemic to a very small area in southern Poland. Due to industrial activities and subsequent transformation of habitats it was extinct in all natural localities around 1994. The persistence of the species was ensured thanks to the active protection efforts including a series of transplantations based on the material from the last and decreasing natural population. The history of conservation efforts of C. polonica provides a model example of successful active protection in the European flora. Here, we provide a complete review comprising the following aims: (i) outline of the discovery and taxonomic conceptions on C. polonica, (ii) review of conservation efforts aimed at preserving its populations, (iii) description of the existing population resources, and (iv) analysis of the genetic structure of all existing populations based on previously published data and new, supplementary results.

Opis:
English yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare tree species in Austria and gene conservation forests reserves are used to maintain English yew populations by silvicultural treatments. This paper describes the current situation of an English yew population at “Stiwollgraben”in Austria with regard to stand structure, vitality and natural regeneration. The area is one of the most important sites in Austria as it consists of 2236 yews. The vitality condition of the yew is very good, and more than 79% of the yews have been assessed as very vital to vital. The potentiality for natural regeneration (13019 one-year seedlings ha–1) is very high, but not all height classes are represented. This indicates a high survival ability of English yew at this site. Three different treatment strategies are described to maintain the yew population. The future effects of these treatments are discussed in the light of the environmental requirements of English yew.

The field experiment was conducted in the years 2014-2016 at AES Grabów (Mazowieckie Voivodeship), belonging to Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute in Puławy, (Poland) and in ecological farm in Chwałowice (Poland) in the years of 2014-2015. The trial was conducted in the randomized block method, in four replications. The following treatments were compared: control and intercrop sowings with: buckwheat, phacelia, white mustard and white clover. The inter-row cultivation of buckwheat, phacelia, white mustard and white clover had a positive effect on maize yield. On average, for the four species of the intercrops, the yield increase was 17-22%, and in Grabów, in the year with unfavorable distribution of total precipitation, this increase was significantly higher and amounted to about 60%. In the summers with favorable weather conditions (2014 and 2016), intersowing buckwheat proved the least useful in Grabów, while in the dry year, as well as in Chwałowice, this species was less competitive than maize. Intersowing different species into maize crops had a relatively small effect on the dry matter content of whole plants and cobs, while in Grabów in 2015, with unfavorable weather conditions, it had a positive effect on its content. In Grabów, the structure of maize plants was little diversified by the applied intercrop species. The lowest share of the cob was recorded in 2014. In Chwałowice, maize grown with intercrops formed cobs only in 2014. In this location, intercrops stimulated the number of grains produced per cob, while in Grabów, an intercrop species had a small impact on the number of grains per cob.
Doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono w latach 2014-2016 w RZD Grabów (woj. mazowieckie), należącym do IUNG-PIB w Puławach, oraz w latach 2014-2015 w Pokazowym Gospodarstwie Ekologicznym w Chwałowicach, należącym do CDR Radom.

On 22 August 2020 field observations were carried out in the agricultural landscape of the Ciechanów and Przasnysz counties. A roost of 36 individuals of the Western Marsh-harrier Circus aeruginosus was found near Golany (Przasnysz municipality, Przasnysz county) in a sugar beet field Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris overgrown with the common lambsquarters Chenopodium album. Next controls documented the increase in the number of harriers and on 5th September there was a group of 62-65 birds. Several Montagu’s harriers C. pygargus and an adult male of the Pallid Harrier C. macrourus were also recorded at that roosting site. The latter stayed in the area for about 3 weeks and used two roosting sites alternatively. Another roosting site was also found nearby. There were12 western marsh-harriers, 1-2 Montagu’s harriers, and the aforementioned male Pallid Harrier. On 12 September the large roost near Golany disappeared due to a beet harvest and ploughing the field. The increase in the breeding population of the Western Marsh-harrier in Poland caused by inter alia development of field populations of this species, results in the increasing number of the records of communal roosting in the agricultural landscape. Therefore, efforts should be made to develop counting methods on such roosting sites and to protect the largest regional roosts of the Western Marsh-harrier and Montagu’s Harrier.

Seasonal studies on size-fractionated phytoplankton productivity (biomass and primary production), marker pigments, and species composition and abundance were carried out in the Cochin estuary (CE), located on the southwest coast of India, to identify the critical environmental factors that control the consistent preponderance of diatoms. The overall results of the study showed a significant contribution of small-sized phytoplankton, specifically nanophytoplankton (2—20 μm), to the total chlorophyll a and primary production in the estuary, regardless of seasons. Diatoms constituted the major phytoplankton taxa, showed an exceptional seasonal scale increase in numerical abundance during the post-southwest monsoon. The relative increase in fucoxanthin (biomarker of diatoms) over other marker pigments substantiated the numerical dominance of diatoms throughout the sampling periods. This is the first study in the CE in which phytoplankton marker pigments have been detected and elucidated the seasonality of functional groups based on HPLC/chemotaxonomy analytical approaches. The prevalence of high DiatDP and diatom chlorophyll a equivalent (estimated by CHEMTAX), further confirmed the preponderance of diatoms in the CE, despite the intermittent dominance of cyanophytes and cryptophytes (monsoon period). The consistent increase in SPM levels (> 25 mg L—1), established at all sampling stations, indicated that the water column turbidity might be one of the significant environmental factors hindering the growth of large-sized phytoplankton (ca. >20 μm) in the CE even if the system invariably holds high inorganic nutrients, irrespective of seasons

The purpose of this study was to determine changes which occurred during 23 years (1974–1997) in four stands in respect of species composition, structure, developmental stages and phases. In 1997 the Walusiowka stand represented the growing up stage, phase of a multistory structure, and during the study period its volume decreased from 698 to 676 m3/ha.The Przełęcz Sosnow stand was in the growing up stage, phase of a little diversified storied structure and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 696 to 622 m3/ha.The Grodek stand during the entire study period was in the growing up stage, phase of the selection forest structure and regeneration, and its volume increased from 529 to 585 m3/ha.The Facimiech stand in 1997 was in the optimum stage, phase of aging and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 688 to 661 m3/ha.During 1974–1997 the percentage of fir (Abies alba) considerably decreased in three stands (Walusiowka from 46 to 33%, Przełęcz Sosnow from 58 to 36%, Grodek from 42 to 24%).The Facimiech stand was almost a pure fir stand during the entire control period. In the Przełęcz Sosnow stand, due to a rapid mortality of fir and presence of vital trees of beech (Fagus sylvatica) of the growing up and optimum growth generations, the break up stage did not take place but the growing up stage had developed, which indicated the disturbance of the natural cycle of the primeval forest described by Korpel’. A scarce presence of fir upgrowth and prevalence of beech in stands composed of these two species permits to suppose that fir will be retreating in favor of beech.

Opis:
Wild growing rose species are of great importance as a source of pollen for insects. Oil extracted from the petals of various Rosa species is used in perfumery, cosmetic industry, and therapeutics. In our study, we compared the flowering duration and flower lifespan, the number of stamens and pistils, the mass and size of pollen grains as well as the anatomical features of the petals of four Rosa species: R. canina, R. ×damascena, R. gallica, and R. rugosa. Moreover, we examined the pollen loads collected by bumblebees foraging on rose flowers in order to determine the attractiveness of pollen of this genus to insects. We showed the flower lifespan to vary (3.5–8 days) in the roses studied and revealed high variation in the number of stamens (82–260) and pistils (17–65) as well as in the mass of pollen produced. The flowers of R. rugosa produced the highest amount of pollen (26.7 mg per flower), while the flowers of R. canina the least (3.3 mg per flower), which is associated with differences in the number of stamens developed in the flowers between these species. The largest pollen grains were found in R. ×damascena and R. gallica. We demonstrated that R. ×damascena produces the thickest petals and that scent-emitting papillae found on the adaxial surface of the petals differ in size and shape in the rose species investigated.
Uzyskiwany z płatków olejek znalazł zastosowanie w perfumerii, przemyśle kosmetycznym i lecznictwie. W pracy porównano długość okresów kwitnienia, długość życia kwiatów, liczbę pręcików i słupków, masę i wielkość ziaren pyłku oraz cechy anatomiczne płatków czterech gatunków z rodzaju Rosa: R. canina, R. ×damascena, R. gallica i R. rugosa.

Opis:
The calcareous grasslands belong to the species-rich plant communities in Poland. Most of them are of anthropogenic origin and they need specific management (i.e. periodical cutting suckers of trees and shrubs, grazing or mowing) in order to protect their floristic diversity. Many of calcareous grasslands have been overgrown by shrubs as a result of cessation of traditional management. The aim of this study was to compare the structure and dynamics of xerothermic hazel shrub patches, which were undergoing secondary succession with patches where different management practices aiming at restoration of species-rich limestone grassland were applied. The managed plots had a significantly higher species richness than the control one. However, they strongly differed in their floristic composition from well-preserved limestone grasslands. There were also significant differences observed between both the managed plots. Too intensive management, particularly frequent mowing of herbs resulted in expansion of grass species such as Brachypodium pinnatum and Calamagrostis arundinacea and caused a sharp decline in species richness. The species composition and turnover rate strongly depended on succesional stage (soil layer thickness) of plots at the start of the experiment. The deeper was the soil, the higher was the rate of species turnover and the smaller was the share of xerothermic and thermophilous species. The last mentioned group was dominated by species with a persistent seed bank in the soil, frequently colonizing anthropogenic habitats.

Opis:
DNA markers are currently the most precise tool for forest tree species identification and can be used for comparative analyses of plant material. Molecular diagnosis of evidence and reference material is based on comparing the structure of DNA markers duplicated in the PCR reaction and estimation of the DNA profiles obtained in studied wood samples. For this purpose, the microsatellite DNA markers are the most suitable tool because of their high polymorphism and accurate detection of structural changes in the genome. The analysis of tree stump DNA profiles let avoid timely collection of data such as tree age, diameter, height and thickness, although such a piece of information may advantageous in wood identification process. For each examined tree species, i.e. Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies (L.) Karst., Quercus robur L. and Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Fagus sylvatica L., Betula pendula L., and Alnus glutinosa L., wood identification was possible via the DNA profiles established on a basis of minimum 4 microsatellite nuclear DNA loci, and at least one cytoplasmatic (mitochondrial or chloroplast) DNA marker. Determination of the DNA profiles provided fast and reliable comparison of genetic similarity between material of evidence (wood, needles, leaves, seeds) and material of reference (tree stumps) in the forest. This was done with high probability (approximately 98– 99%).

The species composition and size-structure of the phytoplankton community in the Boka Kotorska Bay (SE Adriatic Sea) were analysed with respect to abundance and carbon biomass, together with the physico-chemical parameters, with the aim of evaluating the predefined oligo-mesotrophic status of this transitional water ecosystem. Three stations located in the inner part of the Bay were sampled with seasonal frequency in 2008/2009. Picophytoplankton cells were counted using flow cytometry; nanophytoplankton and microphytoplankton were identified and counted by light microscopy. The relative importance of the picoplankton in the Bay, in terms of both abundance and biomass, during all the investigated seasons emphasized their significance in the phytoplankton community. Picocyanobacteria (Synechococcus) constituted a significant part of the summer assemblages with regard to both abundance (up to 3.38 × 108 cells L−1) and carbon biomass (up to 73% of total phytoplankton carbon). The contribution of the nanophytoplankton was found to be generally low (<20% of the total phytoplankton carbon) in all seasons, and was dominated by autotrophic/mixotrophic flagellates. Species with a preference towards nutrient-enriched conditions, like the diatom Skeletonema marinoi, dominated the microphytoplankton fraction. S. marinoi was the most abundant in spring/winter (up to 2.86×106 cells L−1) above the halocline (making a 96% contribution to the microphytoplankton). The potentially toxin-producing diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima was recorded at abundances greater than 105 cells L−1, together with Thalassionema frauenfeldii, as well as the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum micans and the potentially harmful P. minimum. The higher values of phytoplankton biomass and the dominance of phytoplankton species or groups with preferences for nutrient-enriched conditions appear to be consistent with the oligo-mesotrophic status of this specific ecosystem.

Opis:
Two populations of Iris sibirica, a clonal species protected by law in Poland, occurring in patches of Molinietum caeruleae, of similar floristic composition although with different dominant species, were studied. In the Stanisławice locality, species with a high competitive potential prevailed, contrary to the Opatkowice locality, where the species of low competitive potential dominated. It was established that vegetative propagation ensures the continued presence of populations in both localities, although the proximity of plants with high competitive potential limits the vegetative propagation of ramet clusters of Iris sibirica. Despite the high level of seed production, the recruitment of seedlings in both patches is possible only in artificially created gaps. The field observations support the conclusion that creating gaps allowing for germination of seeds and development of seedlings, as well as eliminating expansive neighbours allowing proliferation of ramet clusters of Iris sibirica, is an affective way of protecting populations of this species.

We performed a detailed overall field survey of all specimens of the wild service tree Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz in the research area in the Hádecká planinka National Nature Reserve. This research area, with an area of 80 ha, contains one of the largest populations of the tree in Europe. In all, 1713 specimens were found. This study provides a detailed description of the wild service tree population in the area. The basic biometric parameters (height, GBH, social position, fertility) of thepopulation were assessed. The main emphasis of our analysis was to evaluate the population's age structure. We used estimates of age structure based on the Chapman-Richards growth function to perform this evaluation. During the past twenty years, the natural regeneration of the wild service tree in the nature reserve has decreased considerably. At an experimental plot where a high forest was converted to a coppice with standards, regeneration occurred over 75% of the area. Root suckers were found at the beginning of the observation period. After 2–3 years, generative regeneration occurred.

Secretory ducts and cavities of roots and rhizomes are typical features of the Cardueae tribe in the Asteraceae family. We used light microscopy to analyze the anatomy of the subterranean organs of 21 species of 13 genera of the Cardueae, with particular attention to the secretory system, interpreted in taxonomic terms. The anatomy of secretory ducts varied greatly. A new measurement quotient, C1 [length of epithelial cells (longitudinal section)] and C2 [length of adjacent cells (longitudinal section)] was established. Different types of ducts are described based on type of development and the size ratios among epithelial cells. Detailed anatomical descriptions of the ducts are given, together with their occurrence in particular taxa. The simultaneous presence of various secretory ducts within a single species and their spatial position relative to other prominent anatomical features provide valuable characters for discriminating the studied Cardueae species. These analyses are of particular interest for identification of herbal drugs as, besides chemical analytical techniques such as chromatographic fingerprinting, light microscopy is a common method for purity controls and thus required in official pharmacopeias.

Aconitum bucovinense, a high-mountain species endemic to the Eastern and Southern Carpathians, including the Apuseni Mountains, is legally protected and classified in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants. It attains its NW geographical range in two peripheral populations in the Western Bieszczady Mountains (Polish Eastern Carpathians), isolated by a distance of 13.1 km. PCR-ISSR analysis has been used to elucidate the within- and among-populational levels of species genetic diversity. A UPGMA and block clustering showed discreteness of the populations and subpopulations based on ISSR banding pattern. Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) revealed significant divergence (P = 0.024) of the two marginal populations and highly significant (P < 0.001) differentiation of subpopulations within populations. The theta index calculated for the two marginal populations and the core population in the Carpathians was 0.131 ±0.030 S.D. Most of the population-genetic diversity indices of the marginal populations were not different from those in the core area but the Shannon’s and rarity indices were lower in the marginal populations. It seems that founder effect and subsequent genetic bottleneck resulted in a fine-scale population genetic structure. The marginal populations under study need a relevant recovery program to maintain their genetic diversity.

Opis:
The composition and structure of the breeding bird community in the Borki Forest in north-eastern Poland were investigated during two separate periods: 1994–1996 and 2012–2014. Bird censuses were carried out in three plots located in mature oak-hornbeam, ash-alder and mixed coniferous forest stands. A standard combined mapping technique for estimating the number of breeding birds was applied. A total of 74 bird species bred at least once within any plot during 1994–1996 or 2012–2014. The structure of the bird assemblages on particular plots displayed a high degree of similarity, exceeding 75%, which means that they represent essentially the same bird community. However, the investigated assemblages have changed substantially over the 20 years. Both, the number of breeding bird species and the population densities on all plots, were much higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996. The mean number of breeding species on all plots was over 50% higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996, whereas the mean total density of breeding pairs increased by more than 60%. Total population densities on the plots increased as a result of an increase in population densities of individual bird species combined with an increase in the number of breeding species. Due to different rates of population growth for certain species, also the composition of dominating species group have changed. The observed changes in the avifauna of the Borki Forest were most probably due to an enrichment of the forest habitats structure, which was caused by natural factors, such as ageing of forest stands, forest succession and a change in water regime by beaver dams, as well as by forest management, including group felling within or in the vicinity of plots and uncovering of the forest edge.

Alien tree species, due to their longevity, manifest their invasive potential after several decades from introduction. For the high threat to biodiversity, there is a need to analyze the risk of introduction connected with numerous alien tree species introduced in the various forest ecosystems. We aimed to assess the productivity potential and effect of alien Carya ovata on understory vegetation. Our study was conducted in the oldest (122 years old) tree stand of C. ovata in Poland, located in the Czerniejewo Forest District (western Poland). We analyzed C. ovata tree stand features and vegetation traits within the forest community and compared with natural vegetation – oak−hornbeam forest. We found that C. ovata trees had lower dimensions and standing volume than oaks (Quercus robur and Q. petraea) growing in the neighborhood. We also did not find the impact of C. ovata stands on understory vegetation species composition and light availability. Because of the low impact on forest floor vegetation and lack of spread we concluded that C. ovata cannot be classified as an invasive species. Moreover, its introduction was not successful in terms of tree stand productivity.

Comparison of internal structure and milling properties of spelt (variety Schwabenkorn) and bread wheat (variety Legenda and Parabola) was presented in this work. The seed came from organic cultivation from the experiment conducted in 2009/2010 season at the Experimental Station Osiny, belonging to IUNG-PIB in Pulawy. The internal structure of spelt was similar to bread wheat grain (variety Legenda), it was characterized by a loose arrangement of starch grains and protein. Compared with a grain of bread wheat, spelt grain were characterized by a signifi cantly lower weight of 1000 grains, test weight, uniformity and higher ash content. Total yield of fl our obtained from the milling of spelt grain was at a similar level as the grain wheat variety Legenda, signifi cantly more fl our obtained from the milling of grain variety Parabola. The energy expenditure for milling spelt grain were signifi cantly lower compared to the amount of energy used during milling of wheat grain.

The paper describes current (in years 2007−2017) changes of basic parameters of forest stands that constitute the managed part of Białowieża Forest (ca. 53,000 ha), divided into three forest districts: Białowieża (12,600 ha), Hajnówka (19,700 ha) and Browsk (20,400 ha). The investigated tree stands represent different phases of ecological succession, modified by silvicultural treatments and other human activities. The course of the succession processes is varied, depending, first of all, on local site conditions, consisting mainly of fresh sites (ca. 60%) – particularly fresh broadleaved forest, and encompassing exceptionally high fraction of wet and swamp sites (40%) – especially wet broadleaved forest site type. Most stands represent the intermediate, highly productive phase of succession, with spruce and oak as the dominant tree species. In particular, such stands are common in Białowieża and Hajnówka forest districts. Recently, the share of the mentioned stands is declining, most intensely in the Browsk Forest District. In 2017 alone, 430 ha of highly productive forest stands disappeared from the Białowieża Forest. The process of decay involved mixed stands; besides of spruces which were killed by a current bark beetle infestation, also many oaks, pines, birches, alders as well as rare and valuable minor tree species (such as ashes and maples) died. Dying spruce and, more often, oak stands are often replaced by low−productive hornbeam trees, occupying earlier lower stand strata in such stands. The resulting hornbeam stands are often distinguished by low crown closure and low productivity. Tree stands occurring in the Białowieża Forest are among the most endangered by wind damage stands in Poland. It means that in case of strong winds, several trees will be broken and/or uprooted. The intensity of such phenomena will be further increased by the high tree volume of stands as well as by the presence of many gaps in forest canopy, caused by a massive mortality of spruce trees. In general, one may expect that in the nearest future many stands occurring in the Białowieża Forest, built by different tree species, will be subject to a massive decay. The list of factors contributing to this process is long and involves, among other things, recurring droughts during the growing season, unfavorable changes in ground water table and increased frequency of strong winds. All these factors negatively influence the health status of trees, which further favours the development of parasitic fungi and insects. In consequence, there is a high probability that many areas in the Białowieża Forest will, for a long time, retain a treeless character and/or will be occupied by low−productive and single species hornbeam stands.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the changes occurring in the forests of the Kłodzko Region in the recent period (2001−2017), with particular emphasis on the species composition of the stands, their share in age classes and the structure of harvested timber, including live trees, deadwood, wind−broken and wind−fallen trees. The Kłodzko Region located in the Sudety Mountains (SW Poland) covers the forests of four forest districts: Lądek−Zdrój, Międzylesie, Bystrzyca Kłodzka and Zdroje. The declining share of spruce stands (from 83.5% in 2001 to 75.5% in 2017) and the increasing share of beech and larch as well as sycamore stands indicate that these forests are systematically rebuilt. The average age of the stands is very high (81 years). The share of young (<20 years old ) stands is low (only 5%), while those older than 100 years constitute about 35%. The 21st century saw a serious damage to the investigated forests caused by frequent strong winds and long−lasting droughts in the growing seasons. The three hurricanes that took place in the analysed period were the cause of the removal of 1.1 million m3 of timber in the form of wind−broken and wind−fallen trees. The drought in the growing season in 2015 resulted in the salvage harvest of deadwood with a total volume of 1.6 million m3, which corresponds to the volume of four annual allowable cuts determined for the undisturbed growth conditions of trees in the area under research. Using the wind damage risk model, the threat measure Ms reaching a value of above 40 was calculated for the forests of the Kłodzko Region, which are currently among the most threatened in Poland. This threat results mainly from the high share of spruce stands in older age classes with high average height and gaps after previous hurricanes as well as from a large area of stands located at high elevations.
