    The present paper deals with languages for special purposes with special attention paid to teaching problems. It could be shown that there is a difference between special languages on the one hand and specialist languages on the other hand, that only the latter deserve to be named “languages”, whereas the former contain elements which do not constitute a language of its own, i.e. a language within a language, but have to be considered as being part of the common language. The author points out that a new teaching strategy that takes into account the fact that special words do not automatically belong to a special language may well be warranted.

    The article analyses the sources of phraseological units occurring in the media and in journalistic texts of contemporary Polish language. The first part of the article contains a few remarks on two types of new noun phrases, e.g. Europa dwu prędkości (two-/multi-speed Europe), mowa nienawiści (hate speech), dane wrażliwe (sensitive data). The second part indicates the main problems related to the linguistic description of phraseology in journalism: the phraseologism – term relation and the difficulties in identifying the sources of phraseological units (the type of loanword).

    Specialist languages should be straightforward and unambiguous. In areas such as law, business or medicine precision and to-the-point wording is required. However, in order to facilitate the description of complicated matters, and especially in expert to non-expert communication, unexpected strategies, e.g. metaphorisation, are used. Conceptual metaphor theory, as initially introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (cf. Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) states that human beings tend to think in metaphors, i.e. we are engaged in constant search of similarities between concepts. This drive for pattern recognition helps us understand the unknown in terms of the familiar, the abstract in terms of the concrete. Most conceptual metaphors are grounded in our physical experience of the world, which means that we draw from this familiar experience while creating metaphorical mappings to the complex, abstract concepts. Controversial as it may seem, the same process applies to understanding professional terms and scientific notions, and as a result the language of law, business, medicine, etc. is heavily metaphorical in nature. In our presentation we focus on medicine alone and analyse a corpus of medical text in search of conceptual metaphors. We claim, that rather than obscuring the message, metaphors actually make it clearer and more precise. They enrich conceptualisation, structure the semantics of the message and serve a number of pragmatic functions, esp. in doctor to patient communication. By choosing a certain metaphor, the message may e.g. be softened in order to lessen the impact it has on the recipient. Moreover, it may be more easily understood if it is built on an adequate conceptual metaphor. Many metaphors used in the medical discourse are based on multimodal representations e.g. descriptions of diseases often invoke the imagery of food including its shape, colour, texture, and smell. Such multimodality of representation (cf. Forceville, 2009 and online) engages a number of cognitive faculties for the construction of a complex conceptualisation and in this way helps us gain better understanding of the concepts described. We claim that conceptual metaphor and esp. pictorial metaphor is a very effective tool used in didactics and its use is perfectly justified in scientific discourses, including the medical discourse. Therefore, in our presentation we analyse pictorial metaphors found in medical discourse and in the field of radiology in particular.

    The article attempts to show selected collections of professional vocabulary contained in the first three novels by Wiesław Myśliwski. Creating his characters and the world in which they function, the author used the vocabulary characteristic of occupations and activities related to the countryside and farm. The study is of little survey nature to outline areas for further analyzes of professional lexis in the writer’s novels.

    Współczesne nauczanie języków obcych, w tym specjalistycznych, powinno odzwierciedlać zmiany jakie zachodzą w dydaktyce szkolnictwa wyższego (są one także zauważalne w nauczaniu w szkolnictwie na poziomie podstawowym i średnim), ale również powinno być dostosowane do potrzeb i preferencji dorosłych uczestników kursu - studentów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie wykorzystania jednej z ogólnodostępnych aplikacji do nauczania leksyki na poziomie akademickim. Taki sposób nauczania to z jednej strony zachęcenie studentów do nauki, a z drugiej wyjście im naprzeciw i dostosowanie formy do ich potrzeb i oczekiwań. Jest to metoda tzw. treningu językowego doskonale wpisująca się w nurt nowoczesnej dydaktyki uniwersyteckiej, która pozwala na optymalne wykorzystanie czasu nauki zarówno na sali wykładowej jak i poza nią. Studenci dzięki takiej propozycji pracy własnej nad określonym materiałem leksykalnym zyskują więcej czasu na ćwiczenie umiejętności komunikowania się w czasie zajęć z wykładowcą i dzięki tak przeprowadzonemu treningowi językowemu są przygotowani do posługiwania się językiem docelowym w swoim przyszłym środowisku.
    Contemporary teaching methods should reflect the changes that university didactics has been undergoing nowadays as well as be customized to the preferences and needs of the students. The paper presents the use of one of the open-access applications for revising vocabulary as the tool allowing for optimal use of classroom time for communication skills.

    Learning a specialist language entails developing a number of linguistic competencies, the most important of which is discursive competence enabling proper communication in a particular professional environment. Its development requires that the learner should become sensitive to the pragmatic aspects of specialist language use in a wider discursive context, with particular attention to genre norms forming a discursive polisystem of a given culture. This paper presents specialist text translation as one of the most effective ways of teaching a specialist language by improving discursive competence.

    This paper is an attempt to present the role of authentic written texts in teaching communication in specialist language, based on the example of business language. The terms detailed here include communication, language as communication tool and specialist text. The methods of creating new terms, correlations between the sender of some content and its addressee, and the specialist knowledge held. The options of using specialist texts in business language classes were also presented. In this case such texts include information materials, interviews, certificates, contacts, agreements, statements, confirmations, invoices, orders, reports, other documents and commercial forms and commercial and official correspondence.

    Due to globalization professionals in different fields of knowledge, especially those who are highly-skilled, may easily find employment beyond the borders of their own countries. Poland is one of the countries, where the labor market is getting more and more attractive to foreigners. It is also the case for the IT sector that for years has attracted specialists from the countries of the former Soviet Union. Therefore, it seems to be interesting to compare the influence of English, which is the base of the specialist language in this sector, on the Polish and Russian languages. In this paper, the author answers the question whether English borrowings in the Polish and Russian language of information technology are the same. The author shows the degree of assimilation of exemplary loan words in both languages under discussion and presents the resulting implications for teaching Polish as a foreign language.
    Dzięki powszechnej globalizacji specjaliści z różnych dziedzin, zwłaszcza wysoko wykwalifikowani, mogą bez problemu znaleźć zatrudnienie poza granicami swojego kraju. Polska znajduje się wśród państw, których rynek pracy jest coraz bardziej atrakcyjny dla wielu cudzoziemców. Dotyczy to także branży IT, od lat przyciągającej specjalistów z krajów byłego Związku Radzieckiego. Interesujące jest zatem – wydaje się – porównanie wpływu języka angielskiego, będącego podstawą języka specjalistycznego tej branży, na język polski i rosyjski. W artykule autorka podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy anglicyzmy występujące w polskim i rosyjskim języku informatycznym są takie same. Pragnie także pokazać stopień przyswojenia przykładowych zapożyczeń w obu omawianych językach i omówić wynikające z tych obserwacji implikacje dla glottodydaktyki polonistycznej.

    Pierwszorzędnym celem niniejszego artykułu jest usystematyzowanie wiedzy na temat kompetencji tłumacza. Jednak szczególnym zainteresowaniem cieszyć się będzie owa kompetencja w odniesieniu do tłumaczenia tekstów specjalistycznych. Rozważania dotyczyć będą tego czy lepszym jest wykwalifikowany tłumacz, który podejmuje się przekładu tekstu specjalistycznego czy może ekspert, który tłumaczy tekst z zakresu swojej dziedziny. Wypunktowane zostaną cechy właściwe dla tłumacza tekstu specjalistycznego. Wykorzystana zostanie tutaj m.in. klasyfikacja Marchwińskiego [2007]. Przedstawione zostaną również wyniki ankiety dla tłumaczy dotyczącej kompetencji tłumacza oraz dokonana zostanie analiza materiału badawczego pochodzącego z broszur turystycznych.
    The primary objective of this article is to systematize the knowledge on about the translator competence. Special attention will be given to this competence in relation to the translation of specialist texts. The considerations will pertain to whether a qualified translator that does translation of a specialist text is better than an expert who translates the text in his or her field. In order to achieve those research aims, an attempt will be made to present the features specific the translator of the specialist text. Among others the classification by Marchwiński [2007] will be used here. The results of the survey regarding the translation competence will be also discussed as well as the analysis of the gathered material obtained from tourist brochures.

The further part is devoted to the experiment itself, followed by the analysis of the obtained results.

    This article attempts to revise a thesis concerning an equivalent status of various translator’s competences (linguistic, encyclopaedic, logical, psychological, rhetoric-pragmatic). When discussing mistakes made in the Polish translation of Escape from the Deep, relating the fate of a submarine, we demonstrate how the lack of specialist knowledge (insufficient encyclopaedic competence) and linguistic knowledge influence a negative reception of the translation by a reader whose knowledge of the subject-matter is rather extensive. We suggest that a broadly understood psychological competence, embracing the translator’s readiness to extend his/her knowledge, may be treated as a kind of superior competence (meta-competence) that conditions a creation of a high quality translation in terms of the subject-matter.

    Ein charakteristisches Merkmal von Fachtexten ist die Verwendung von Fachbegriffen, die zusammen mit anderen sprachlichen Mitteln auf morpho-syntaktischer, lexikalischer und stilistischer Ebene den Grad der Fachlichkeit beeinflussen. Die Verwendung von Fachbegriffen kann zu einer Kommunikationsbarriere führen, insbesondere in der Kommunikation zwischen Experten und Laien. In einigen Branchen ist die Verwendung einer präzisen Ausdrucksweise mittels für Laien unverständlicher Fachbegriffe nicht völlig zu vermeiden. Im Falle fachexterner Kommunikation suchen dann die Textproduzenten nach unterschiedlichen Kommunikationsstrategien, um die Barrieren zu überwinden. Dazu gehört u. a. die Verwendung von Beispielen, Zahlen, Grafiken und nicht zuletzt von Metaphern. Im Beitrag werden zwei Ziele verfolgt: Zum einen soll exemplarisch gezeigt werden, welche Funktionen (neben der Funktion zu veranschaulichen) Metaphern in Texten ausgewählter Fachbereiche erfüllen, und zum anderen, welche Rolle die Gegenüberstellung von zwei heterogenen semantischen Feldern und die Verwendung von Begriffen allgemeinverständlicher Alltagssprache bei der Kommunikation spielt. Für die Analyse wurden Fachbücher, Sachbücher und Magazine unterschiedlicher Kommunikationsbereiche gewählt, die sich an unterschiedliche Gruppen von Rezipienten richten und einen unterschiedlichen Grad an Fachlichkeit aufweisen. Anhand konkreter Belege wird gezeigt, dass insbesondere Metaphern als sprachliche Bilder, aber auch als Anknüpfung an Ereignisse des täglichen Lebens, wesentlich zur Verständlichkeit und Attraktivität eines Textes beitragen. Nicht zuletzt wird exemplarisch gezeigt, dass eben diese sprachlichen Bilder mit unterschiedlichen Konnotationen verbunden sein und somit Emotionen hervorrufen können.
    A characteristic feature of specialist texts is the use of specialist terms, which, together with other linguistic devices at the morpho-syntactic, lexical and stylistic level, influence the degree of specialist content of the text. The use of terms can lead to a communication barrier, especially in communication between experts and lay people. In some areas, the use of precise language with specialist terms that are incomprehensible to inexperienced recipients cannot be completely avoided. In the case of non-specialist communication, text authors then look for different communication strategies to break down the barriers. These include the use of examples, figures, graphics and, last but not least, metaphors. This article has two aims: firstly, to show by example what functions (besides the illustrative function) metaphors fulfil in texts from selected disciplines; and, secondly, what role the juxtaposition of two heterogeneous semantic fields and the use of expressions from commonly understood everyday language play in communication. Specialist books, non-fiction books and magazines from various fields of communication, which are addressed to distinct groups of recipients and have different degrees of expertise, were selected for the analysis. On the basis of concrete evidence, it is shown that metaphors in particular, as linguistic images, but also as a link to everyday events, contribute significantly to the comprehensibility and attractiveness of a text. Just as importantly, the examples show that these linguistic images can be associated with various connotations and thus evoke emotions.

W wyniku analizy materiału zawartego w “Encyklopedii logopedii” i wybranych słownikach terminów logopedycznych wytypowano 33 terminy, których frekwencję w literaturze przedmiotu oceniono jako niską. Postawione pytania badawcze to m.in.: Czy wytypowane terminy logopedyczne są znane przez: (a) studentów logopedii, (b) logopedów-praktyków. Czy (a) studenci logopedii, (b) logopedzi-praktycy znają definicję słownikową wytypowanych terminów logopedycznych. W celu odpowiedzi na pytania badawcze przeprowadzono ankietę, w której znalazły się m.in. pytania o znajomość terminów oraz ich rozumienie. Przeprowadzone badania wskazują na potrzebę dalszego opisu terminologii logopedycznej nie tylko ze względu na zróżnicowany poziom jej znajomości, ale też aktualności i rozpowszechnienia.

    Artykuł omawia rezultaty badań nad terminologią logopedyczną. Programy zajęć w ramach specjalizacji regulowane są stosownym rozporządzeniem ministra i dość sztywno przenoszone do programów kształcenia na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Czy odgórne wytyczne ministerialne uwzględniają wystarczająco docelowy profil i kompetencje nauczyciela języka specjalistycznego? Jak uczelnie wyższe podporządkowują się przepisom prawa w zakresie przygotowania do wykonywania zawodu nauczyciela języka obcego? Celem niniejszego tekstu jest, z jednej strony, przegląd programów specjalizacji nauczycielskiej na wybranych polskich romanistykach pod kątem treści kształcenia przygotowujących do pracy z grupami o potrzebach zawodowych, a z drugiej, odniesienie ich do kompetencji pożądanych w zawodzie nauczyciela języka specjalistycznego.
    All Romance language institutes feature teaching specialisations in order to provide students with foreign language teaching qualifications. The curriculum for these specialisations is subject to ministerial regulations, and as such is quite rigidly transposed onto university programmes. Are the ministerial guidelines adequate for the target profile and competences of the specialist language teacher? How do higher education institutions comply with regulations regarding training foreign language teachers? The aim of the presented article is, on the one hand, to review available teaching specialisation content at selected Romance institutes in Poland in terms of vocational language teaching, and on the other hand to assess the relevance of the programmes for desirable competences of a specialist language teacher.

    Artykuł jest wynikiem wieloletniej pracy z cudzoziemcami, którzy na przestrzeni lat byli uczestnikami kursu przygotowującego do podjęcia studiów medycznych w Polsce. Kursy odbywały się w Łodzi w Studium Języka Polskiego dla Cudzoziemców Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, to one były punktem wyjścia do napisania niniejszego artykułu. W jego pierwszej części pokazano specyfikę nauczania przedmiotu innego niż język polski, w tym przypadku biologii, właśnie w łódzkim Studium. W kolejnej części zaprezentowano przewidywane efekty kształcenia w zakresie wszystkich sprawności językowych – słuchania, mówienia, czytania i pisania. Ostatnią i zarazem najważniejszą częścią niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie treści kształcenia, których głównym elementem jest tabela, ukazująca, jakie słownictwo, struktury językowe i specyficzne zwroty należy wprowadzić podczas nauczania biologii w języku polskim.
    The article is the result of many years of work with foreigners who over the years have been participants of the course preparing for medical studies in Poland. The courses were held in Lodz at the Polish Language Center for Foreigners of the University of Lodz, and they were the starting point for writing this article. Its first part shows the specificity of teaching a subject other than Polish, in this case biology, in the Study Center in Lodz. The next part presents the expected learning outcomes in all language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. The last and at the same time the most important part of this work is the presentation of the content of education, the main element of which is a table showing what vocabulary, language structures and specific phrases should be introduced when teaching biology in Polish.

    Artykuł porusza kwestie definiowania specjalistycznego języka medycznego i nauczania go na poziomach A1–A2 w grupach wielonarodowościowych na lektoracie języka polskiego na uczelni medycznej, ukazując jednocześnie problemy i trudności z tym związane. Omówione w nim zostały poszczególne etapy tworzenia kursu języka specjalistycznego, od profilu słuchacza będącego studentem anglojęzycznym i analizy jego potrzeb, aż po konkretne sposoby wprowadzania leksyki medycznej, niezbędnej już na wczesnym etapie znajomości języka polskiego dla względnej swobody komunikacyjnej w kontakcie z pacjentem polskojęzycznym. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, iż wprowadzanie języka specjalistycznego jest możliwe już na poziomach A1–A2, jak również zwrócenie uwagi na problemy lektoratów języków specjalistycznych – brak narzędzi, materiałów i szkoleń niezbędnych do przygotowania autorskich propozycji kursów specjalistycznych.
    The paper addresses the issues of defining a specialist medical language and teaching at the A1–A2 level in multinational groups during the Polish language course at a medical university, showing the problems and difficulties associated with it. It discusses the individual stages of creating a specialist language course, from the profile of an English-speaking student and the analysis of his needs, to specific methods of introducing medical vocabulary, which is necessary at an early stage of knowledge of Polish for relative communication freedom when contacting a Polish-speaking patient. The aim of the paper was to show that introducing a specialist language is possible already at the level A1–A2, as well as drawing attention to the problem of specialist language courses – the lack of tools, materials and training necessary to prepare original proposals for specialist courses.

    In the age of the widespread globalization, intensive international economic, scientific and technical cooperation, there are promising prospects for those specialists who aim at improving their professional qualifications or taking up employment abroad. A fundamental conditio which is to be met in order to fulfil those plans is to achieve the command of professional language of the target country or professional English. The need of skilful verbal communication is connected with the occupational mobility, especially that of members of health service staff. Command of professional language, which entails the necessity of comprehension of specialist texts, is indispensable if it comes to the contacts with patients and other members of health service staff at workplace. Vocabulary of specialist professional languages is systematically expanded through scientific research development, creation of new specialisations and using more and more modern appliances for the purpose of medical diagnostics, and the medical stuff has to assimilate it. This paper is focused on the specialist professional language with particular attention given to the medical and nurses’ one. I would also like to present the multimedia course of professional language for nurses who sedesign is to take up employment outside the territory of Poland.
    W czasach powszechnej globalizacji, intensywnej międzynarodowej współpracy gospodarczej, naukowej i technicznej otwierają się szerokie perspektywy przed specjalistami pragnącymi podnieść kwalifikacje zawodowe lub podjąć pracę poza granicami kraju. Warunkiem koniecznym do zrealizowania tych planów jest znajomość zawodowego języka docelowego lub języka angielskiego. Potrzeba sprawnej komunikacji językowej ma związek z mobilnością zawodową, szczególnie z mobilnością pracowników służby zdrowia. Znajomość języka fachowego wiąże się z koniecznością rozumienia tekstów specjalistycznych, jest niezbędna w kontaktach zawodowych z pacjentami oraz członkami personelu medycznego. Rozwój badań naukowych, narodziny nowych specjalizacji, wykorzystywanie coraz nowocześniejszych urządzeń technicznych w diagnostyce medycznej sprawia, że specjalistyczne języki zawodowe wzbogacają się systematycznie o nową terminologię, którą personel medyczny musi sobie przyswoić. Tematem rozważań w niniejszym artykule będzie specjalistyczny język zawodowy, w szczególności zaś język medyczny i język pielęgniarek. Chciałabym też przedstawić multimedialny kurs językowy dla pielęgniarek, chcących pracować poza granicami Polski.

    Artykuł porusza problem tłumaczenia automatycznego tekstów specjalistycznych, w których często pojawiają się rzeczowniki określające części ciała, lecz używane w zawężonym kontekście technicznym. Autorka koncentruje się na kilku najczęściej pojawiających się rzeczownikach i bada, w jaki sposób radzą sobie z ich prawidłowym tłumaczeniem na język polski wybrane translatory automatyczne dostępne online. Autorka przedstawia jednocześnie, w jaki sposób można rozwiązać tego typu problemy pojawiające się w tłumaczeniu automatycznym za pomocą metody zorientowanej obiektowo, w której zasadniczą rolę odgrywają klasy obiektowe ujęte w odpowiedni kadr pojęciowy.  
    The article concentrates on the problem of automatic translation of specialist texts which often include the nouns referring to parts of the body but used in the narrowed technical context. The author discusses a few most often used nouns and examines how a group of chosen automatic translators available on-line cope with their appropriate translation into Polish. Simultaneously, the author proposes how some problems which appear in the process of automatic translation can be solved with the help of the object oriented approach, where the main role is ascribed to object classes presented in the appropriate frame.

    Artykuł stanowi głos w dyskusji nad sposobami rozwijania sprawności słuchania oraz mówienia w nauczaniu polskiego języka medycznego. Przyczynkiem do napisania tekstu były konkluzje płynące z analizy koncepcji rozwijania sprawności językowych przedstawionych we wstępach do podręczników do nauki (polskiego) języka medycznego. W pierwszej części przedstawione zostały dotychczasowe prace na temat podręczników i pomocy do nauczania polskiego języka medycznego. W drugiej części opisano techniki rozwijania sprawności słuchania i mówienia powszechnie przyjęte w metodyce nauczania polskiego języka ogólnego oraz do celów specjalistycznych. Następnie dokonano weryfikacji mieszczących się we wstępach do podręczników deklaracji oraz koncepcji autorów poprzez ich zestawienie ze stanem rzeczywistym materiałów zawartych w książkach. Autorka omówiła również techniki nabywania oraz rozwijania umiejętności słuchania i mówienia w podręcznikach do języka medycznego.
    The article is a voice in the discussion on methods of developing listening and speaking skills in teaching Polish medical language. The reason for writing the text were the conclusions from the analysis of the concept of developing language skills presented in (Polish) medical language textbooks. The first part of the text presents the work done so far on textbooks and aids for teaching Polish medical language. It also describes the commonly accepted methods of teaching Polish general language and, for specialist purposes, techniques for developing listening and speaking skills. Part II verifies the declarations and concepts of the authors with the actual state of the materials contained in the textbooks’ introductions. The author also discussed the techniques of acquiring and developing listening and speaking skills in medical language textbooks.

Autorzy omawianych tekstów koncentrują się na takich kwestiach, jak: diagnozowanie poziomów biegłości językowej, komunikacja międzykulturowa, nauczanie grup pochodzących z określonych krajów i kręgów kulturowych, nauczanie grup o specjalnych potrzebach edukacyjnych, nowe rozwiązania w metodyce nauczania podsystemów i sprawności, gatunki, teksty i treści nauczania, nowe techniki w nauczaniu zdalnym.
    The article presents the assumptions, theses, concepts and postulates of the papers published in the 28th volume of the “Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Kształcenie Polonistyczne Cudzoziemców” journal under the title “Komunikacja – język – kultura. Nowe ścieżki w glottodydaktyce polonistycznej”. The authors of the discussed texts focus on such issues as: diagnosing the levels of language proficiency, intercultural communication, teaching groups from specific countries and cultures, teaching groups with special educational needs, new solutions in the methodology of teaching subsystems and skills, genres, texts and content teaching, new techniques in remote teaching.

    Artykuł stanowi głos w dyskusji nad zagadnieniem kompetencji socjolingwistycznej w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego do celów specjalistycznych. Tekst ma charakter badawczy i przedstawia jedną z koncepcji dochodzenia do definicji kompetencji socjolingwistycznej. Przeprowadzone pogłębione analizy treści (stanu zastanego) podręczników do nauczania polszczyzny medycznej umieszczono w lingwa- i socjokulturowym nurcie badań lingwistycznych, natomiast kontekst funkcjonalny badanych materiałów lokuje prezentowane rozważania w obrębie specyfiki metodologicznej glottodydaktyki. Głównym celem jest diagnoza świadomości autorów i twórców materiałów do nauczania polskiego języka medycznego pod kątem konieczności rozwijania kompetencji socjolingwistycznej w komunikacji medycznej. W wymiarze poznawczym celem staje się poszerzenie wiedzy w zakresie rozwijania kompetencji socjolingwistycznej w nauczaniu języków specjalistycznych na przykładzie języka medycznego. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono ujęcia teoretyczne kompetencji socjolingwistycznej w nauczaniu języka do celów ogólnych i zawodowych. W drugiej części zaprezentowano koncepcje autorów dotyczące obecności komponentu socjolingwistycznego w materiałach do nauczania polskiego języka medycznego. W części trzeciej skonfrontowano te koncepcje ze stanem rzeczywistym i zawartością podręczników. Analiza materiałów glottodydaktycznych pozwoliła wskazać najczęściej używane techniki służące kształceniu umiejętności socjolingwistycznych, którym poświęcono część czwartą artykułu. Wyniki przeprowadzonych analiz wykazały, że w przeważającej większości podręczników autorzy nie akcentują wyraźnie kompetencji socjolingwistycznej w opisie celów nauczania polskiego języka medycznego, choć w samych materiałach podręcznikowych komponent socjolingwistyczny jest obecny w mniejszym bądź większym stopniu. Do słabych punktów analizowanych materiałów można zaliczyć prezentowanie wyłącznie sytuacji dialogowych lekarz – pacjent, a z pominięciem komunikacji w sytuacjach lekarz – rodzina pacjenta, lekarz – lekarz, lekarz – personel medyczny. To powoduje, że komponent socjolingwistyczny nie jest w pełni przedstawiony osobie uczącej się. Natomiast zaletą podręczników w zakresie aspektu socjolingwistycznego okazuje się zaprezentowanie licznych form powitań, zwrotów adresatywnych oraz zwrotów grzecznościowych. Problem badawczy zasygnalizowany w artykule nie wyczerpał omawianego zagadnienia, daje jednak asumpt do kolejnych badań zorientowanych socjolingwistycznie.
    The article is a contribution to the discussion on the issue of sociolinguistic competence in teaching Polish as a foreign language for specialist purposes. The text has a research character and constitutes one of the concepts of achieving a definition of sociolinguistic competence. An in-depth analysis of the content (the existing state) of the textbooks on teaching Polish medical language is placed in the linguistic and socio-cultural stream of linguistic research, while the functional context of the tested materials places the presented considerations within the methodological specificity of glottodidactics. In the cognitive dimension, the aim is to broaden the knowledge of the development of sociolinguistic competence in teaching specialist languages on the example of medical language. The first part of the article presents theoretical approaches to sociolinguistic competence in language teaching for general and professional purposes. The second part presents the authors’ concepts concerning the presence of a sociolinguistic component in the materials for teaching Polish medical language. The third part confronts these concepts with the actual state and content of the textbooks. The analysis of the glottodidactic materials made it possible to indicate the most frequently used techniques for teaching sociolinguistic skills, to which the fourth part of the article is devoted. The results of the analysis have shown that in the vast majority of textbooks the authors do not explicitly emphasise sociolinguistic competence in the description of the objectives of teaching Polish medical language, although in the textbook materials themselves the sociolinguistic component is present to a greater or lesser extent. The weak points of the analysed materials include the presentation of only doctor-patient dialogue situations, omitting at the same time doctor-patient family, doctor-doctor, doctor-medical staff communication. As a result, the sociolinguistic component is not fully presented to the learner.

    This text is an attempt to apply the concept of a legal text unit to the description of strictly defined structures of legal texts, namely the gerund strings. The main attention is focused on the methods used to identify multi-segment terminological structures and on distinguishing them from strings that constitute a combination of linguistic expressions. The overall conclusion of such analysis is based on the indication of the mechanism used for connecting and limiting gerund structures in this scope. Therefore, this work includes, among others, the formal procedure of verification, which allows for distinguishing, with significant precision, the syntactic constructions with gerund forms and similar sequences of terms.

    W artykule przeanalizowano leksykę zebraną przez badacza i zgrupowaną zgodnie z koncepcją pola semantycznego i konstrukcji definicyjnych. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na słownictwo staropolskie, pochodzące z języka niemieckiego, dotyczące organizacji miast (np. archiwum miejskie, koza, kram, ratusz, skarbiec, syndyk). Wyróżniono słownictwo specjalistyczne, środowiskowe i regionalne: słownictwo dotyczące prac żniwnych i okołożniwnych (np. czeladka, gromadka, kłosować się, okrężne, postacianka, przepiórka), słownictwo weselne (np. drużba, dziewosłąb, korona, korowaj, poczęstne, wesółka), słownictwo dotyczące żeglugi, rybaków i oryli (np. binduga, drygawka, kłomla, lintuga, sternik, sztaba, tralówka, wicina, wiersza, wylewajka, żak), słownictwo związane z domem i gospodarstwem (np. dobytek, kamara, siedlisko, siestrzana, sernik) oraz tradycją ludową  (np. Sobótka, kucja, Kupała, środa gradowa, tryzna, wilja) i inne (np. bibik, biel, brzechwa, gleja, grzebułka, oberżysta, stopniowanie, czyli dialekt przejściowy, stręczyciel).
    The paper analyzed lexis collected by the researcher and grouped according to the concept of the semantic field and definition constructions. Special attention was paid to Old Polish vocabulary, derived from German, concerning town organization (e.g. archiwum miejskie, koza, kram, ratusz, skarbiec, syndyk). Specialist, environmental and regional vocabulary was described: harvesters’ vocabulary (e.g. czeladka, gromadka, kłosować się, okrężne, postacianka, przepiórka), wedding vocabulary (e.g. drużba, dziewosłąb, korona, korowaj, poczęstne, wesółka), rafters’ and sailors’ vocabulary and fishermen’s vocabulary (e.g. binduga, drygawka, kłomla, lintuga, sternik, sztaba, tralówka, wicina, wiersza, wylewajka, żak), vocabulary associated with home and farm (e.g. dobytek, kamara, siedlisko, siestrzana, sernik) and with folk tradition (e.g. Sobótka, kucja, Kupała, środa gradowa, tryzna, wilja) and other (e.g. bibik, biel, brzechwa, gleja, grzebułka, oberżysta, stopniowanie, czyli dialekt przejściowy, stręczyciel).

    The article concentrates on the lexical and terminological features of the language of motorization. The analysis is based on the catalogues published by one of the leading passenger car producers in Germany and employs the perspective of specialist translation from German into Polish. The problems discussed in the article include loanwords, specialist jargon and the issues of synonymia and polysemy. The texts selected for the analysis and their specific linguistic and cultural features may serve as an interesting teaching material for specialist translation courses in philological translation studies.

    As a cultural institution for debate on European history, the House of European History in Brussels is a perfect example for the complementary relation between history and the present, since its main aim, as it is being claimed, “gives visitors the opportunity to learn about European history and to engage them in critical reflection about its meaning for the present day”. The main focus of the article is the analysis of the speeches of German and Austrian MPs presented in the plenary debates of the European Parliament in spring 2011 on the expenditures on the building, in which the House of the European History is to be established. The focus of the analysis lies on the lexical level in order to prove the typical aspect of the political language in the European Parliament, which is the special mixture of various specialist languages.

    In the article, the problem of text-normative equivalence has been addressed. It was introduced by W. Koller in 1979, but so far it has not been further developed in the literature. Preserving textual and normative equivalence is particularly important in the translation of law texts. Therefore, the question arises about the parameters of equivalence. The article shows that in law acts such objective parameters are the specific attendance and distribution of lexical resources. They allow for a precise establishment of normative equivalents in the target language.

    Opis:
    The importance of communication in the cockpit is discussed, and the discourse analysis of a sample authentic in-cockpit communication during flight operation is presented. The analysis results indicate that specific language use variables are correlated with individual performance at the point of flight performance and individual communicative intentions. Also, language use was found to vary as a function of crew position, out-of-cockpit addressee and level of workload during the flight. Language use for the procedure purpose was tightly linked to cockpit panel readings, whereas language use for personal interaction was of ‘over a cup of tea talk’ pattern. These observations suggested a specific hybridness of the cockpit language discourse which might need to be further checked by an alternative research method of communication analysis., e.g., a content-coding method.

    This text deals with the problem of procedures for adjudication on the correctness of terminological expressions used in legal texts. In particular, it argues about the need of distinguishing three types of units – those compatible with general units, motivated by general units, and affecting the form and the meaning of general units. Expressions, that belong to each of the above distinguished types, require separate standardisation procedures. Apart from fundamental considerations, the issue of the status of terminological expressions in legal texts as well as their relation to general units is discussed.

    Celem artykułu jest po pierwsze — wskazanie (zidentyfikowanie) wybranych wyrazów i połączeń wyrazowych posiadających status terminu, a będących ekwiwalentami terminów angielskich, które powstały na gruncie określonej koncepcji badawczej, jaką jest psychologia pozytywna; po drugie — ustalenie najbardziej produktywnych leksemów (będących konceptualizacją kluczowych dla danego nurtu pojęć) stanowiących bazę derywacyjną nazw wielowyrazowych; po trzecie — odnalezienie jednostek leksykalnych (także tych o niepewnym statusie, ale przynależnych do języka specjalistycznego) tworzących pola semantyczne typowe dla omawianej teorii naukowej; po czwarte — wskazanie grupy terminotwórczych metafor.
    The aim of the article is: firstly, to identify chosen words and word connections which possess the status of a term which are counterparts of English appellations created on the basis of a specific research concept, which is positive psychology, secondly to assign most productive lexemes (being the conceptualization of key ideas of a given trend) constituting the derivative base for multi-word names; thirdly — to find lexical units (also these of uncertain status, but belonging to a specialist language), creating semantic fields typical for the discussed scientific theory; fourthly — to indicate a group of metaphorical terms.

    The article aims to show that there are determinants of consumer behavior in Chinese society that remain relevant regardless of the direction of global social changes - caused by the digital transformation of society and economy, the development of artificial intelligence and unexpected events such as pandemics. The factors influencing consumption in China undoubtedly include culture, politics, as well as macroeconomic factors influencing the level and pace of consumption development. It is worth analyzing consumer behavior using interdisciplinary knowledge and bearing in mind the complex and diverse changes taking place on a national scale, and the emergence of new terminology is a reflection of the changing specificity of consumption in China. Awareness of the dynamics of changes in the behavior of Chinese consumers will not only facilitate business relations with Chinese contractors, but will also help determine the direction of consumption development at the global level, as the possibilities of e-commerce developing in China are also used and tested in Europe.
    Определяющим фактором потребительского поведения, несомненно, является культура, а также макроэкономические факторы, влияющие на уровень и темпы развития потребления. Стоит понаблюдать за китайскими потребителями на фоне сложных и разнообразных изменений, происходящих по всей стране. Междисциплинарный подход в польско-китайских отношениях может положительно повлиять на развитие деловых отношений, в частности туризма, который все больше принимает модель потребления.

    Nowadays essential changes are happening in the field of education. A lot of people of different specialities feel the necessity of profound knowledge of foreign languages. To be a good specialist means not only read up-to-date literature but also keep hands on pulse. In our paper we would like to illustrate this point and present the portfolio of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for the first and second year of studies at one of the higher technical universities, namely Lviv State University of Life Safety. Our course “English for Rescuers” focuses on the development of specific English language skills for students and cadets for Fire Safety speciality.
    W nauczaniu można obecnie zaobserwować wiele istotnych zmian. Specjaliści widzą potrzebę znajomości języków obcych. Bycie dobrym specjalistą nie oznacza tylko korzystania z literatury specjalistycznej ale również śledzenie na bieżąco nowinek w swojej dziedzinie. W artykule podjęto próbę potwierdzenia tezy, jak również zaprezentowania portfolio kursu: Angielski o Profilu Specjalistycznym, skierowanego dla studentów pierwszego i drugiego roku studiów w jednym z technicznych uniwersytetów – Lwowskim Państwowym Uniwersytecie Bezpieczeństwa Życia. Kurs „Angielski dla Ratowników” zakłada rozwijanie specyficznych umiejętności języka angielskiego u studentów i kadetów wydziału Bezpieczeństwa Pożarowego.

    The aim of the article is to present the methods and techniques used for specialist content-based courses of Slovene language taught as a part of the newly launched study program at the University of Lodz - Linguistics for Business. The content of the courses focuses on three fields: logistics, finances and computer studies. Due to the lack of specially designed materials for teaching this type of courses the author will introduce her own alternative materials, collected from different sources such as newspapers and magazines, the Internet and textbooks for vocational education. A short overview of syllabi for Linguistics in Business will be taken.
    Celem referatu jest przedstawienie sposobów nauczania słoweńskiego języka specjalistycznego na nowo otwartym na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim kierunku lingwistyka dla biznesu. Studiując go, studenci poznają słownictwo specjalistyczne z trzech dziedzin: logistyki, finansów i informatyki. Ponieważ ani na rynku słoweńskim, ani na polskim nie istnieją gotowe pomoce naukowe, na podstawie których można by było przeprowadzić tego typu zajęcia, autorka artykułu prezentuje materiały alternatywne, pozyskane z takich źródeł jak gazety i czasopisma, Internet i podręczniki do szkół zawodowych. Ponadto, w ostatniej części artykułu został przedstawiony program całego kierunku lingwistyka dla biznesu.

    W artykule autor przedstawia najważniejsze zagadnienia dotyczące popularyzacji nauki o języku. Poza zdefiniowaniem terminu popularyzacja wymienia podstawowe wyznaczniki dobrego popularyzowania, omawia historię oraz współczesność popularyzacji nauki o języku polskim. Ponadto charakteryzuje najnowsze formy upowszechniania nauki, uwzględniające zróżnicowane bogactwo świata mediów. W ostatniej części artykułu w ogólnym zarysie autor przedstawia dokonania popularyzatorskie prof. dr. hab. Feliksa Czyżewskiego.
    У статті автор розглядає найважливіші питання, які стосуються популяризації науки про мову. Крім визначення терміна популяризація, називає головні детермінанти цього процесу, обговорює історію та сучасність популяризації науки про польську мову. Автор характеризує також новітні форми пропагування науки з урахуванням різноманітності світу засобів масової інформації. В останній частині статті в загальних рисах представлено популяризаторські досягнення проф. д-ра габ. Фелікса Чижевського.
    The author presents the most important issues concerning popularization of linguistic science. Apart from defining the term popularization, the author lists the basic determinants of effective popularization. He discusses the history and the present day of activities in popularizing the science of the Polish language. Moreover, the author elaborates upon the state-of-the-art methods of contemporary science popularization, such as those relying on the vast richness of the media universe. In the final part of the article, the author outlines the popularization achievements of Professor Feliks Czyżewski.

    The article presents the main theses and concepts of the texts published in the 24th volume of the journal “Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Kształcenie Polonistyczne Cudzoziemców (“Studies in the Teaching of Polish to Foreigners”) entitled Stylistic and Specialized Variants of Language, Education of Children and Adolescents. The authors of the discussed texts focus on issues such as teaching functional styles of Polish, business and professional education, the place of colloquial Polish in teaching Polish as a foreign language, the specific character of teaching the Polish language to children and young people, methods and practices used in foreign language lessons, usefulness of textbooks and teaching materials, curricula, the relationship between educational system and migration process.
    W artykule przedstawione zostały główne tezy i koncepcje prac zamieszczonych w 24. tomie czasopisma „Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Kształcenie Polonistyczne Cudzoziemców” zatytułowanego Odmiany stylistyczne i specjalistyczne języka, kształcenie dzieci i młodzieży. Autorzy omawianych tekstów koncentrują się na takich kwestiach jak: nauczanie stylów funkcjonalnych polszczyzny, kształcenie biznesowe i zawodowe, miejsce polszczyzny potocznej w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego, specyfika nauczania języka polskiego dzieci i młodzieży, metody i praktyki stosowane podczas lekcji języka obcego, użyteczność podręczników i materiałów dydaktycznych, programy nauczania, zależność między systemem kształcenia a procesem migracyjnym.

    Opis:
    The present article is an attempt to present the situation in the area of Content and Language Integrated Learning at some technical universities in Poland. It starts with a brief outline of CLIL methodology as well as its status in the context of Polish tertiary education, and then moves on to a discussion of the results of the study conducted among Polish and international students attending English-medium courses in their specialist areas, such as, for instance, engineering. The courses involve learning of new, difficult concepts as well as specialized vocabulary. The study took place in three universities which have been offering content instruction in English for a number of years. Its aim was to investigate problems and difficulties that students come across during the course of their studies in a foreign language, as well as their expectations concerning such a mode of education.

    Academic discourse has in recent years emphasised the importance of an integrative approach to foreign language learning and teaching in which affective factors are treated equally to cognitive ones. These components are characterised by dynamic interaction where emotions are not viewed as an addition but as an important component of the language learning process that act as a catalyst. The aim of this article is to review theoretical approaches based on the assumption that affective and cognitive processes cannot be perceived as two separate areas of the human psyche, as both jointly shape human actions, including those in language. This view is the starting point of an analysis of the potential use of the affective-cognitive paradigm in preparing for specialist communication. It is assumed that it can become a theoretical framework for empirical research that will allow for a better understanding of the specificity and functioning of individual differences in language communication and allow for a more complete picture of specific factors, taking into account their multidimensional nature, dynamics and embeddedness in the context of specialist communication.

Звернено увагу на недостатню увагу до вивчення терміносистеми на матеріалі спеціальних текстів.
    W artykule omówiono specyfikę intensywnej nauki języka ukraińskiego jako języka obcego w oparciu o pedagogiczne doświadczenie autorki. Jako jedna z najważniejszych została wymieniona kwestia uwzględnienia rzeczywistych potrzeb komunikacyjnych i zawodowych studentów podczas układania programu nauczania języka ukraińskiego jako obcego. Poruszono temat wykorzystania materiałów edukacyjnych wspomagających aktywne poznawanie lokalnej historii oraz historii Ukraińców w Polsce, jak również tekstów z dziedziny edukacyjnej, zawodowej i społeczno-kulturalnej. Autorka zwraca szczególną uwagę na konieczność analizy tekstów specjalistycznych jako ważny etap w procesie przygotowania studentów do działalności zawodowej, w związku z czym porusza również problem brakujących programów i podręczników o tematyce ściśle terminologicznej. 
    The article deals the specificity of intensive learning of the Ukrainian language as a foreign language based on the author's pedagogical experience. One of the most important was the issue of taking into account the real communication and professional needs of students in the process of composing the Ukrainian language teaching program. The topic of the use of educational materials supporting the active learning of the local history and history of Ukrainians in Poland, as well as texts in the field of education, professional and socio-cultural issues were discussed. The author pays special attention to the need to analyze specialized texts as an important stage in the process of preparing students for professional activity, and therefore also raises the problem of missing programs and textbooks on strictly terminological topics.
