The study deals with social and educational functions of (literary) narratives – both oral and written – in everyday life of a socially grounded individual. Narratives (or stories told or read) play an essential role in building and strengthening social bonds within a community (by spending time together, informing its members of preferred social values and behaviour patterns, etc.) The author sustains that narratives circulating within a particular community (or ethnic group, nation) should be viewed and analyzed from the perspective of cultural anthropology. As an educational tool, stories are utilized not only in families and schools, but also in penitentiary and correctional institutions or in public reading courses. The author also pays attention to particular structural components of “captivating” narratives (such as novelty, surprise, cognitive and/or emotional relevance to the reader, etc.) and so-called narrative universals – themes, types of characters, plots and settings that are common to all cultures worldwide (such as romantic love, human desires and needs, sacrifice, etc.).

The transformations that occur in rural areas are intended to increase the diversity of the countryside by extending the previously performed functions, both economic and social. This increases the importance of entrepreneurship among rural residents to cope with quite diffi cult facts, which had an undeniable impact on the quality of life. The aim of the study is to evaluate the entrepreneurship of the rural residents in comparison with living in cities. We have taken into account as the entrepreneurial attitudes as entrepreneurial actions. The important area of the analysis was the assessment of the relationship between these two aspects of entrepreneurship. The conducted studies have shown, that the entrepreneurial potential of the rural population in Poland is relatively high. In these terms, from the point of view of both the entrepreneurial attitudes and actions, residents of the rural areas are not falling behind the residents of cities. At the same time, entrepreneurial activities undertaken by them, remain in relation to their entrepreneurial attitude.
Przekształcenia zachodzące na obszarach wiejskich zmierzają do zwiększania różnorodności terenów wiejskich poprzez rozszerzenie dotychczas pełnionych funkcji, zarówno gospodarczych, jak i społecznych. Zwiększa to znaczenie przedsiębiorczości mieszkańców wsi. Jako cel pracy przyjęto ocenę przedsiębiorczości mieszkańców wsi w porównaniu z mieszkającymi w miastach. Uwzględniono przy tym zarówno postawy, jak i działania przedsiębiorcze. Istotny obszar analizy stanowiła ocena relacji między oboma aspektami przedsiębiorczości. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że potencjał przedsiębiorczy mieszkańców wsi w Polsce jest relatywnie duży. Zarówno z punktu widzenia postaw, jak i działań przedsiębiorczych mieszkańcy wsi nie pozostają przy tym w tyle za mieszkańcami miast. Jednocześnie, podejmowane przez nich działania przedsiębiorcze pozostają w związku z ich postawą przedsiębiorczą.

Humans are a part of nature and society. They tend to satisfy their needs that guarantee the existence by using natural and social richness. Forests represent a reservoir of the natural richness. They perform economic, ecological and social functions. The paper presents characterization of the social functions of forests, with particular focus on health function, recreation and tourism function, educational function and cultural function. With specific categories of forests, the scope of organizational and managerial activities conducted by forest authorities was presented as determining factors in performance of these functions. Furthermore, the focus was on the negative factors that affect forest environment and its functions.

Purpose The most frequent cancer among women in Poland and worldwide is breast cancer. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of women's life after unilateral and bilateral breast amputation. Research process The study included 47 women - 24 women after bilateral amputation and 23 unilateral amputees. Two questionnaires were used: European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer - Quality of Life Questionnaire: general and breast cancer module to measure the quality of life of patients treated for cancer. Results From among the assessed areas of quality of life, the sphere of emotional functioning was significantly disturbed. The passage of time improved the quality of life of the surveyed women. Thanks to early detection and treatment survival time is extended, however the disease becomes a chronic disorder affecting the psychosomatic sphere that changes the quality of life of these women.

Stress more often affects our social lives. Undergoing high level or persistent stress, implicate that individuals frequently retract from social interactions and provide to be irritable and hostile. Moreover it provides to impairment of cognitive function. Exposure to stress modulated by early-life adversity could provide to cognitive function impairment; moreover, the effects of early-life stress depend on the timing of exposure and genetic factors. Executive function (EF) is an umbrella term that refers to processes that control other cognitive processes. Nevertheless, there is ample evidence that prolonged stress provides alterations in brain structure tied to cognitive function.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na funkcję społeczno-katalityczną architektury – kształtującą zachowania ludzi, ale też będącą odpowiedzią na ich potrzeby. Zaprezentowano w nim wyniki badań z zakresu psychologii społecznej i poznawczej, w których świetle nakreślono wskazówki dla projektantów. Wskazano elementy, które powinni oni rozważać, pracując nad każdym swoim projektem: w jakim stopniu dane rozwiązanie sprzyja komunikacji i budowaniu relacji, a w jakim może powodować konflikty oraz czy sprzyja bezpiecznym zachowaniom, czy też zachęca do podejmowania tych ryzykownych. Wszystko to w kontekście szeroko rozumianego dobrostanu i szczęścia, które zależą – tak na poziomie jednostkowym, jak i całych społeczeństw – od środowiska, w którym żyjemy.
The main aim of the article is to point social-catalytic function of architecture – the way it shapes people behavior and at the same time responds to people’s needs. The social and cognitive psychology research results are presented as the context of recommendation for designers and architects. The areas that should be considered by designers to check if the solution supports people’s communication and social relations development or rather may cause conflicts or encouraging dangerous behaviors are pointed. All of that is presented in the wider context of well-being and happiness that depends both on the man and on the society level – on the environment we all live in.

SummaryThe right of perpetual usufruct was introduced to the Polish legal order in 1961, i.e. during the period of so-called actually existing socialism. Amongst the reasons of its introduction were political and ideological factors, and in particular the conception, according to which a socialist state should not alienate the ownership of land to natural and legal persons. Apart from political and ideological functions, the institution in question also fulfilled a number of socio-economic functions, inter alia it enabled natural persons and housing cooperatives to gain access to land for housing construction. Following the transformation of 1989, the institution of perpetual usufruct was not eliminated from the Polish legal order and it also continues to function in practice. From a socio-legal perspective, this continuity is a result of the adaptation of the social functions of the institution in question to the changed conditions folloing the systemic transformation.
StreszczeniePrawo użytkowania wieczystego zostało wprowadzone do polskiego porządku prawnego w 1961 r., a zatem w okresie tzw. realnego socjalizmu. Do przyczyn wprowadzenia tej instytucji prawnej zaliczyć należy istotne czynniki polityczne i ideologiczne, a w szczególności realizację koncepcji, wedle której państwo socjalistyczne nie powinno zbywać gruntów na rzecz osób fizycznych i prawnych. Poza funkcjami polityczno-ideologicznymi, omawiana instytucja pełniła także określone funkcje społeczno-gospodarcze, do których należało m.in. udostępnianie osobom fizycznym oraz spółdzielniom mieszkaniowym gruntów pod budownictwo mieszkaniowe. Po transformacji ustrojowej w 1989 r. instytucja użytkowania wieczystego nie została wyeliminowana z polskiego porządku prawnego, występuje też w obrocie prawnym. W perspektywie socjologicznoprawnej wynika to przede wszystkim z dopasowania funkcji społecznych omawianej instytucji do zmienionych warunków po transformacji ustrojowej.

In this paper, using elements of the comparative analysis, it is argued that Horkheimer and Rorty convergently understand philosophy as a discipline that meets the social functions. In support of this thesis the problem of significance vs. contingency of the relation between philosophy and social affairs is examined, then their individual interpretation of the social function of philosophy is presented. The attention is drawn to the epistemological problem of the objectivity. It is significantly affecting the proposed interpretations of philosophy social function. The analysis leads to the conclusion that Horkheimer proposes to treat philosophy as a social horizon, and Rorty recognizes the social issues as a horizon of philosophical problems. However, following the concept of Rorty, we would have to break with the whole tradition of Western philosophy. In this perspective, Horkheimer’s position seems more reasonable only because of its economy.

Celem artykułu jest uwypuklenie istoty turystyki jako środka kształtującego osobowość turysty. W pracy zastosowano metodę analizy danych zastanych, literatury przedmiotu, zasobów źródeł elektronicznych. Analiza zebranego materiału pozwoliła na wysunięcie następujących wniosków: jednym z czynników wpływających na rozwój turystyki jest potrzeba zweryfikowania tradycyjnego pojmowania turystyki. Według autorów, powinno się uwypuklać znaczenie turystyki w aspekcie ideologicznym, kulturowym, humanistycznym, etycznym, poznawczym itp. Biorąc to pod uwagę, rozpatrujemy zjawisko turystyki jako czynnik wpływający na ogólny światopogląd człowieka. W związku z tym, turystyka daje powody do postrzegania jej od strony filozoficznej, zawierającej aspekty epistemologiczne, społeczne, aksjologiczne, duchowe i inne. Rozpatrując fenomen turystyki z filozoficznego punktu widzenia, należy podkreślić, że turystyka sprzyja unifikacji, komunikacji i socjalizacji, jak również rozprzestrzenianiu wartości etycznych w duchu wzajemnego zrozumienia i szacunku.
The aim of the article is to reveal the essence of tourism as means of outlook formation of a person. The following research methods were used in the paper: desk research analysis of the literature on the subject, Internet sources. Analysis of the collected material allowed the following conclusions: one of the factors influencing tourism development is the need to verify traditional understanding of tourism. According to the authors, ideological, cultural, humanistic, ethical, cognitive, ets. aspects of tourism should be emphasized. Taking this into account, we consider tourism as a factor influencing general worldview of man. In this regard, tourism gives reasons to perceive it from a philosophical perspective, including epistemological, social, axiological, spiritual and other aspects. When considering the phenomenon of tourism from a philosophical point of view, it should be emphasized that tourism promotes unification, communication and socialization as well as the spread of ethical values in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect.

W artykule podjęto próbę analizy stanu bezpieczeństwa przez pryzmat procesów globalizacyjnych. Zdefiniowano zjawisko globalizacji i określono jego konsekwencje, z podkreśleniem skutków o charakterze społeczno-ekonomicznym. Opisano społeczną funkcję państwa oraz omówiono modele polityki społecznej, ze wskazaniem na model społecznej gospodarki rynkowej – właściwy dla większości państw członkowskich. Określono prawne i instytucjonalne podstawy polityki społecznej w UE. Dokonano charakterystyki zagrożeń dla bezpieczeństwa społecznego, będących wynikiem zmian geopolitycznych, ekonomicznych, kulturowych, etc., wynikających z globalizacji.
The article attempts to analyze the state of security in the context of globalization processes. The phenomenon of globalization has been defined and its consequences with emphasis on social and economic effects have been described. The social function of the state and models of social policy have been discussed with reference to the model of the social market economy, which is appropriate for most member states. The legal and institutional basis of the social pol-icy in the EU has been defined. The authors present a description of threats to social security as an outcome of changes in geopolitics, economy, culture and other areas resulting from globalization.

Puntem wyjścia szkicu jest proponowane przez Adrienne Rich rozumienie społecznej funkcji poezji. Zdaniem Rich najważniejszym zadaniem poezji jest dzisiaj nieustanne przypominanie o rzeczach, które, których moglibyśmy pragnąć (jako jednostki i jako społeczeństwo), o pragnieniach zapomnianych lub pogrzebanych. W swoim manifeście „Poetry and Commitment”, Rich pyta o sposoby, w jaki poezja wchodzi w interakcję z życiem, jak, przy pomocy wszystkich swoich formalnych i estetycznych mechanizmów, umożliwia nam wyobrażanie sobie innej codzienności. Autorka szkicu rekonstruuje punkt widzenia Rich i porównuje go z koncepcjami Franco „Bifo” Berardiego, z książki „Uprising. On poetry and finance”. Powołując się na przykłady z polskiej poezji ostatniej dekady, szkic stara się udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie o pracę, która odbywa się w wierszu.
The starting point of the paper is the social function of poetry, as understood by Adrienne Rich in her later essays. According to Rich, the single most important function or „capacity” delivered by poetry today is to continuously remind us of the things that we might want (as individuals as well as a society), our forgotten or buried desires. In her manifesto „Poetry and Commitment” Rich asks about the ways in which poetry intervenes in one’s life – how, with all its formal aspects and aesthetic mechanisms it enables us to imagine an everyday life different from the one we already have. In the paper the authoress compares Rich’s point of view to that of Franco „Bifo” Berardi in his last book „Uprising. Poetry and Finance”. Using Polish poetry of the last ten years or so as an example, the paper reflects on the actual work of (and the inside of) the poem.

This article indicates the specific manner in which early modern literature is exploited in contemporary media. It focuses on the interaction involving the trans-position of philosophical texts to the domain of laughter embedded in the everyday life of the modern recipient. Selected passages of John Donne’s (1572-1631) prose and poetry serve to illustrate how an old literary work encourages new creativity, how it transcends the boundaries set by a given epoch, culture and form, to undergo a specific thematic and structural transformation. What seems particularly interesting in this process is the conversion of philosophical sadness into a useful joke incorporated in, inter alia, the transition from meditation to motivation, from inspiration to action. In other words, this article examines laughter provoked at the interface between a profound philo-sophical message and popular entertainment which combines images and words and activates the intellect as well as the senses and emotions. Such foundations give rise to a transmedia message being socially functional – not only as comic relief, but also as a didactic tool for shaping attitudes.

Silnie zabudowane obszary metropolii z racji kondensacji i intensyfikacji funkcjonalnej są miejscem silnej presji inwestycyjnej wypierającej elementy środowiska przyrodniczego. Pociąga to za sobą konsekwencje zaburzeń struktury funkcjonalno-przestrzennej miasta w różnorodnych aspektach, m.in. uwarunkowań przyrodniczych, społecznych, zrywane są powiązania systemu przyrodniczego, co prowadzi do upośledzenia jego funkcjonowania, obniżenia odporności na dynamiczne zmiany, zmniejszania bioróżnorodności. Dlatego zwrócenie uwagi na możliwości implementacji elementów naturalnych okazuje się być jedną z głównych podstaw budowania trwałego i zrównoważonego środowiska miejskiego. Lata 90. XX wieku oraz pierwsze 15-lecie XXI w. ukazują intensywny rozwój poszukiwań nowoczesnego uzupełniania „przerwanych ogniw” systemu przyrodniczego poprzez poszerzenie elementów sieci zielonej infrastruktury m.in. za pomocą zielonych dachów, a prowadzone na nich badania ugruntowują niezbędną potrzebę i dają mocne argumenty na rzecz takich instalacji.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje poglądy na temat wspierania interesu publicznego przez regulacje dotyczące prywatnych podmiotów w kontekście zagospodarowania przestrzennego. Amerykańscy współautorzy artykułu zaznaczyli, że w wielu południowoamerykańskich i europejskich krajach koncepcje społecznej funkcji własności oraz „value capture” odgrywają główną rolę w rządowych regulacjach zagospodarowania przestrzennego. W USA żadne z tych pojęć nie jest powszechnie używane, lecz koncepcja „value capture” jest implementowana przez opłaty zwane „impact fees”, które zobowiązują dewelopera do finansowania infrastruktury. Autorzy amerykańscy stawiają pytanie, czy wspomniane wyżej teorie są obecnie realizowane w Polsce. Polski autor wyjaśnia, że obecne podejście do teorii funkcji społecznej jest uwarunkowane doświadczeniami Polski z czasów komunizmu, kiedy własność państwowa była szczególnie chroniona w stosunku do własności prywatnej. Po upadku komunizmu ten podział zanikł, a własność prywatna otrzymała znaczną ochronę jako filar nowego systemu gospodarczego. Mimo tej teoretycznej akceptacji funkcji społecznej doktryna “nienaruszalności” Prawa własności silnie wpływa na politykę i ustawodawstwo. Polski autor zauważa, że nie ma obecnie dość woli politycznej w Polsce do wprowadzenia tzw. impact fees.

The 460-page book “A Mathematical Look at Politics” (E. Arthur Robinson, Jr. and Daniel H. Ull-man. A mathematical look at politics. CRC Press–Taylor and Francis Group, Boca Raton, FL, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-4398-1983-8) written by Arthur Robinson and Daniel Ullman [1]   consists of four chapters (the descriptions of the chapters are given in parenthesis): I --- Voting (the two candidate case,  social choice functions, criteria for social choice, which methods are good?,  Arrow’s theorem, variations on a theme), II --- Apportionment (Hamilton’s Method, Divisor Methods, Criteria and Impossibility, the Method of Balinski and Young, Choosing a Divisor Method, History of Apportionment in the United States), III --- Conflict (Strategies and Outcomes, Chance and Expectation, Solving Zero-Sum Games, Conflict, Nash Equilibria, the Prisoner’s Dilemma) and chapter IV --- the Electoral College (Weighted Voting and Privileges). At the end of each chapter there are problems and exercises. Finally, solutions to the exercises and problems, bibliography and index are at the end. Recommendations for instructors are also presented at the end of the preface. In the preface, one may find the declaration of the Authors that this book focuses on mathematical reasoning about politics rather than on mathematics:--  Is there a good way to choose winners of elections?--  Is there a good way to apportion congressional seats?--  Is there a good way to make decisions in situations of conflict and uncertainty?The book offers an alternative textbook to the usual mathematics courses for liberal arts students seeking to meet a general education requirement in mathematics or quantitative reasoning. What makes this book mathematical is not numbers or formulas, but rather reasoning. The book requires rather little background in mathematics or political science. Some experience with the American system of government is assumed.
