Opis:
Research background: The executives of SMEs that have higher innovativeness, risk taking, proactiveness, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy dynamize the strategic posture of SMEs, thus, those firms can reach better financial and economic conditions. However, existence of many differences among countries, such as cultural values and market conditions, can cause variations in EO of these executives. Therefore, this fact can be one of the reasons why the performance and financial power of SMEs differ in various countries.  Purpose of the article: This study aspires to find out the differences in entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of younger and older, female and male, and more and less educated executives of SMEs from various countries. Methods: 1141 Czech and 479 Turkish executives were analyzed separately by the Mann-Whitney U test, to find out the differences in EO. The researcher ran the analyzes by SPSS Statistical Software. Findings & Value added: The results indicate that risk-taking and competitive aggressiveness of the executives differ regarding their gender, while innovativeness, proactiveness and autonomy do not. While there are significant differences between proactiveness, autonomy and innovativeness of older and younger executives, no differences exist in risk-taking and competitive aggressiveness. Regarding educational status, more educated executives perform better in innovativeness, proactiveness and autonomy, while less educated executives have higher propensities in risk taking and competitive aggressiveness. Masculinity, fear of failure, perception of obstacles, motivation of SMEs' executives and location of businesses might be the reasons of these results. By including the survey respondents from different countries and all dimensions of EO into the analyses, this study finds similarities and differences in gender, age and education levels and of SMEs' executives and their EO. This research also suggests some policies for governments and institutions to close the gap between EO of the executives. These facts not only make this research to unique, but also constitute a valuable addition to the literature.

Opis:
One of the key factors of a competitive economy is creating a strong, internationally competitive SME sector. This essay is based on the fact that management tools used in the SME sector are insufficient. With the development of these tools, the competitiveness of companies could improve. According to the literature, using lean thinking has a positive influence on the company’s effectiveness, and also proved that lean approach can be successfully extended out of the car industry, into the limitedly resourced SME sector, too. Even though the topic of lean manufacturing is analysed by many studies, there is a lack of papers dealing with its usage in the SME sector. The originality of this paper lies in analysing the current status of using lean manufacturing practices among the Hungarian SMEs operating in the manufacturing industry. The paper includes an examination about how deeply the elements of lean thinking are present in the Hungarian SME sector, how large the development reserves are, and whether there is a difference between the usage of lean practices. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. SMEs’ representatives, mostly CEOs and managers from the Hungarian manufacturing industry participated in the survey. The sample contained 128 observations. The study has two control variables, which are the size of the company and the relation to the lean management. The survey brought the following results. First of all, it shows that the level of using lean is low among the Hungarian SMEs. Furthermore, customer orientation is a key factor in the sector, however, there are considerable possibilities for progress by the inner processes and the handling and involvement of the suppliers. Firstly, a good basis to increase the effectiveness could be the creation of thinking in processes influencing the supply chain. Secondly, the development of the leadership and the involvement of the employees at some level are also significant. Key findings is that without state incitement and the involvement of outside experts, progress cannot be expected to spread on a broad scope. The background of the research method was created to fit the available literature and to capable to be used in other countries, too. Moreover, this way the available information can be expanded with a regional dimension, in case further studies are going to be made.

Opis:
The article discusses the problem of the relationship between the capital structure and the level of competitiveness of SMEs in Poland. The objective of the article is to determine the impact capital structure has on the level of competitiveness of SMEs in Poland. The capital structure of SMEs is dominated by internal funds. Among external sources of financing, bank loans and leasing are predominant. This structure is consistent with the relevant theoretical models. The study shows no significant differences in the financing of current operations, innovation, and competitiveness improvement. The lack of relationship indicates that the capital structure of SMEs has little impact on their competitiveness. The results of the study demonstrate that all external sources of financing improve the competitiveness of SMEs, but the strength of their impact is different. The strongest impact is shown for venture capital, guarantees, and leasing; the weakest – for bank loans and the issuance of shares and bonds. A significant factor is the degree of alignment of a particular financing source with the special needs of SMEs. This significant relationship is demonstrated for all the sources most commonly used by SMEs

Research background: The differences in the legal structures, tax rates, and cultural-linguistic issues of various countries have always been a significant concern for SMEs in their exporting activities and internationalization processes. However, since firm-level characteristics might provide some advantages or disadvantages in their operations, their perceptions of export impediments might vary across size, age, and sector groups. Purpose of the article: This paper investigates the perceptions of export impediments by 408 larger-smaller, older-younger, and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian SMEs in a country-based perspective. Methods: The researchers use the random sampling method to create research samples and employ an internet-mediated questionnaire to collect the research data. The researchers use both Independent Sample T-test and ANOVA analyses to find differences between size, age, and sector groups. Findings & value added: While the differences exist between the perceptions of Slovakian larger-smaller and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing SMEs regarding cultural differences, the perceptions of legal and tax-related export impediments by SMEs do not differ depending on their age, size, and sector. This paper contributes to the literature by confirming various perceptions of SMEs in different countries and different characteristics regarding export obstacles and providing an entity-specific and international scope that policymakers and SMEs can benefit from. Awareness of the policymakers regarding the results of this paper that includes differences and similarities in SMEs' perceptions of export barriers might make them have close interactions with SMEs to reduce SMEs' concerns regarding their export risks. On the other hand, SMEs that are aware of the results of this paper can be more interested in having a broader network that includes close relationships not only with intermediary firms, but also with governments to overcome the export impediments.

Safety and quality management are very important elements of managing production and service processes. It is important not only to manage in itself, but above all to constantly improve processes and constantly strive for excellence. However, continuous improvement of the organization is one of the key principles of quality management, it states that improvement can be obtained from the analysis of existing processes or measurement results. In this paper the level of occupational health and safety in european enterprises providing transport and logistics services in terms of quality management principles. On the basis of the presented results it was found that in large enterprises safety management principles are respected, while in small and medium enterprises the level of safety does not look very promising. An interesting phenomenon was observed in the case of micro-enterprises (family businesses). Research shows that employees know and adhere to the safety principle, but they do not see too much change in improving the level of safety.

Opis:
The sector of SMEs plays a key role in the economic development in Poland. On the other hand they belong to the group of units that is characterized with the weakest position in the market. Practice and theory show that SMEs seek for the financial means for running their activities and for investments. The problem with the financing strongly appeared in the time of the financial and economic crisis, when SMEs and entrepreneurs have suffered a double shock: a drastic plummet in demand for goods and services and the tightening in credit terms, which were ruthlessly disturbing their cash flows.
Problem ten pogłębił od 2008 roku globalny kryzys gospodarczy i finansowy, a zwłaszcza brak zaufania m.in. pomiędzy instytucjami finansowymi i podmiotami gospodarczymi.

Stimulating innovation is one of the pressing policy challenges facing many countries in the world today. The paper analyses the external factors that Polish entrepreneurs find most detrimental to their innovative activity. A sample of 199 small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in Poland were subjected to a survey. The data collected revealed the innovation types of SMEs in Poland and external financial factors influencing innovation the most. The results show external factors such as legal regulations, access to external financing, bureaucracy of institutions, financial government support, the tax system, time necessary to comply with regulations, and crisis and instability are very important for SMEs. According to the results, process and marketing innovations are applied more frequently than product and organisational innovations. Finally, the results indicate that entrepreneurs indicate that lack of government support and weakness of tax incentives is an important barrier to the innovation process.

Aim/purpose – We want to provide recommendations to bridge the gap in access to financing of the entrepreneurial sector in Ukraine based on the analysis of European experience, EBF approaches, financial funds for SMEs and the current state of the credit market in Ukraine. Design/methodology/approach – We used the general scientific methods of knowledge, conceptual tenets of the theory of market economy, abstract logical analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, historical (to determine the nature and causes of bank investment in SMEs, refine categories and terms); formalization, systems analysis (to determine factors of investment banking, institutional and legal environment); statistical, retrospective analysis. The results of surveys conducted by the EBF on the issues of support and development of SMEs are used, own research of 120 Ukrainian SMEs, which was conducted during the period from January to July 2016. The nature of the research questions was reinforced by the decision to survey only SMEs. Independent reporting (from entrepreneurs or CEOs) was used to account for both business activity and the external sources of information. Findings – Policy initiatives should primarily be developed at the national level in the field of lending to SMEs based on the European experience and Ukrainian realities; it is necessary to develop an understanding of the need for access to certain types of information; SMEs are the main providers and the most valuable source of credit information. Research implications/limitations – When using the methods of calculation creditworthiness perhaps to take into account the methods for assessing the quality of management, the image of the enterprise, ISO certificates. Originality/value/contribution – Based on the cross-country comparison of the EU and Ukraine, highlight the necessity of focusing on some legal unification of SME lending procedures for the development of a culture of sustainable entrepreneurship on the European continent.

The purpose of this paper is to study the standard firm-factor determinants on capital structure of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). To this end, we analyzed small and medium sized firms in Kazakhstan, where all sectors were considered. We use panel data methods to investigate the determinants of capital structure for non-financial SMEs in Kazakhstan. This study examines the impact of key determinants such as asset tangibility, size, growth, profitability and tax rate of SMEs. The trade-off theory and the pecking order theory of capital structure guided this study. The results suggest that despite some differences in the influence of factors on the capital structure, most of the determinants presented by the theory of finance appear indeed to be relevant for the Kazakhstan small and medium business sector.

Implementing sustainable development goals defined by UNESCO encompasses diverse activities and spheres of contemporary life, including the issues of responsible production and consumption (goal 12). The fashion sector is often mentioned in this context and considered both ethically and environmen[1]tally problematic, especially taking into account clothing overproduction coupled with decreasing of its quality and offshoring to non -European countries. Fashion designers – owners of independent fashion brands based in specific local contexts – seem to be especially well prepared to implement in practice the idea of sustainable fashion often also referred to as responsible, ethical or slow fashion. The paper presents results of a qualitative exploratory research among Polish small, independent fashion firms. While we are discussing the decade that preceded economic stabilisation and the turn in economic policy in 2010, the improvement of the financial and economic situation of Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises and the enhancement of their competitiveness keep remaining a goal to be achieved. The problems that domestic micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises face for decades originate from factors that prevent their growth and set the track of their growth in the one and a half decades that have passed since the change in the regime. The long-term effect of chronical under-financing that also weakens corporate competitiveness appeared in all levels of corporate operations. Along with EU accession, challenges grew larger and competitive conditions became harder, which trend was further intensified with the onset of the financial and economic crisis in 2008. It became a key issue for domestic enterprises to have financial resources and borrowing possibilities at their disposal in sufficient quantity and quality and their possibilities for development and their track of growth were not hindered.

Opis:
The importance of internationalization for firm’s survival and growth seems to be consensual among the researchers on this topic. Innovation is also considered a key factor for firm’s development and competitiveness. Moreover, the relationship between innovation and internationalization has become a matter of increasingly interest in the literature and can be analysed according to two streams: innovation as cause or consequence of companies’ internationalization. Additionally, given the great importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the growth of economies, part of literature has paid special attention to this kind of enterprises. The purpose of this work is to verify the existence of a possible relationship between internationalization and innovation strategies among Portuguese firms by exploring whether Portuguese entrepreneurs consider innovation as an important factor or a motivation in the internationalization process. To achieve this goals, and based on data obtained from an online questionnaire survey, descriptive and inferential data analysis techniques are used. In particular, graphical representations, descriptive measures and also, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis (with multiple comparisons) non-parametric tests.

Opis:
Research background: The study responses to the internationalisation issue, one of the essential factors of SMEs growth. Particularly to companies' efforts towards setting international cooperation and circumstances obstructing these struggles. The study takes into consideration that internationalisation in specific areas of company's operations differs noticeably. Similarly, different barriers may arise depending on the areas of the company's value chain that are the focus of the enterprises' internationalisation strategies. Purpose of the article: This study aims to identify barriers to internationalisation regarding various areas of a company's value chain. The study employs the Value Chain Model by Porter. Methods: The field data was collected using a questionnaire survey on a sample of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in countries in the Baltic Sea region (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland). A multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the impact of barriers on internationalisation. Finding & value added: The study indicates three areas that are most often the subject of internationalisation in SMEs: operations, outbound logistics and marketing and sales. Barriers differ between value chain areas; however, cultural differences and competition are perceived as the most important hindering factors by companies experienced in internationalisation. At the same time, barriers regarding knowledge and finance diminish when companies becoming more experienced in internationalisation in particular value chain areas. This study is one of few employing the value chain framework to examine internationalisation.

Research background: Innovation is a very important pillar within a knowledge-based economy, in the regional and local perspective as well. A literature review on innovation and SME innovation strategies to their correlation and the possibility of their joint examination. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to explore the SME?s innovation strategies and their impact on effectiveness of innovation in a peripheral region. We investigate the effects of innovation activities not only among small and medium, but also micro firms which are not covered in official innovation surveys by the national statistical offices. We proposed a model of implementing innovation, and tested our hypotheses. Methods: Research was based on data drawn from CATIs carried out among 419 firms, therefore making a conceptual contribution to the knowledge on innovation strategy. The main statistical test for relationships and dependencies was the chi-square independence test. To arbitrate whether there were statistically significant differences between medians due to different factors among enterprises, analysis for variance (H Kruskal-Wallis? test for k independent samples) procedure was implemented. Findings & Value added: The results of our research show that among SMEs in peripheral regions dominated those which we call ?pragmatists? and ?imitators? in context of their approach towards innovation. The significance of objective factors showed that there was a lack of enterprises that could play the role of ?creators of innovation? in the peripheral region. However, the examined firms more often noticed positive than negative aspects of introduced innovations, which is determined by the scale of enterprise; they were focused mainly on the consequences of innovation for their products and services.

Przeanalizowano konfiguracje uzwojeń w układzie solenoidalnym i toroidalnym. Zaproponowano metodę ekranowania pola magnetycznego badanego elektromagnesu za pomocą elementów ferromagnetycznych w kilku konfiguracjach. Przedstawiono rezultaty obliczeń metodą elementów skończonych rozkładu pola magnetycznego i gromadzonej energii w uzwojeniu dla rozpatrywanych konfiguracji ekranujących w modelu numerycznym zbudowanym w programie Flux-3D.
The article describes a physical model of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System (SMES) built in the Laboratory of Superconducting Technology in the Electrotechnical Institute. The considered problem concerns the choice of the superconducting winding configuration, which can be responsible for the required energy value in a limited space of the strong magnetic field. Possible configurations of the windings were analysed with particular focus on the solenoid and the toroidal configuration. The results of the calculations of the magnetic field distribution and the energy accumulated in the coil for the considered shield configuration have been described. It was shown that for the tested SMES model with energy of 34 kJ at temperature 13 K, it is possible to use such magnetic field shielding configuration, which allows to limit the magnetic field zone with an intensity exceeding the limit values and energy increase by 14%.

Introduction/background: The development of the small and medium enterprises sector is extremely important for economy from the point of view of many, very diverse criteria. Employment increase, market expansion, active involvement in internationalization processes and product portfolio expansion require many qualitative changes such as improvement of the management system, implementation of innovations, raising funds for investments, overcoming paradoxes and management shortcomings. Politics and public support instruments play an increasingly active role in those processes. Such public aid may include, for example, dedicated EU funds, support for business environment institutions as well as direct and indirect public influence exerted from the central, regional and district level. Aim of the paper: The purpose of this paper is to present an outline of the approach to contemporary entrepreneurship of small companies and the related development requirements which SMEs sector entities need to face as well as to draw out the research approach adopted by the author for evaluation of the public aid provided to entrepreneurs. Materials and methods: The research instruments have been independently developed by this paper’s author. They are the effect of pilot surveys held by the author with small and medium entrepreneurs and representatives of entrepreneurs’ self-government in which they indicated their feelings about and reflections on the opportunities for obtaining public support. The author has based his work also on the evaluation reports on the use of EU Structural Funds in the years 2007-2014. Results and conclusions: The system of research proposed by the author of the paper creates a space for becoming familiar with how entrepreneurs and administrators of aid funds evaluate potential changes which may result in corrections, as part of public support after 2020, that is during the period of the new perspective of financing with EU funds and during the greatest economic crisis after World War II caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Wdrażanie innowacji w sektorze mikro, małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw nabiera ogólnego znaczenia.
The issue of improving the competitiveness in the sector of micro, small and medium- -sized enterprises by implementing innovation becomes general meaning. The purpose of this article is to present data on the state of small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland and analysis of their potential for innovation. Analysis of data from Eurostat, GUS, PARP shows that innovative activity is not the domain of the SME sector, but seen significant improvements in this area. In Poland it formed a group of innovative companies, which constantly increases expenditures on innovation. There is also a growth business co-operation between them, the development of the services sector, a better awareness of the importance of innovation, the growth of private spending on research and development. However, there is concern that despite the changes they are not sufficient to sustain economic growth.

Although recent evidence suggests that the development of dynamic capabilities (DC) is a key factor to gain and sustain competitive advantages to promote firm´s growth, the question of how SMEs create, identify, and seize opportunities for growth have not been fully explored, particularly in developing countries with scarce resources. The aim of this study is to shed light on how SMEs develop capabilities to grow in the specific context of developing countries with resources constraints. To achieve a detailed description of the processes involved, this study applies a qualitative methodology based on a comparative case study of eight SMEs within the software and tourism industries in Argentine, which have been previously identified as dynamic sectors with high growth potential. Our findings suggest that SMEs develop DC mainly through an emerging process of iterative experimentation rather than through strategic planning. This process involves the coordination of organizational actions and resources, with managers playing a key role.

Research background: According to the EU agenda, CSR should be considered an integral element of the current organizational strategy, including SMEs. While the debate continues about the optimal approach for successful CSR adaptation in SME, yet there is a need to shed light on the impact of owner-manager?s demographics on CSR practices. Purpose of the article: The paper aims to examine whether owner-manager?s demographics (age, gender, education) matter for the implementation of CSR or not. Methods: The study is based on a questionnaire filled in by owner-managers of SMEs operating in Czechia (454) and Slovakia (368). Factor analysis and nonparametric methods are used to test the hypotheses. Findings & value added: This study shows that the relationships between CSR and owner-manager?s demographics are not alike between Slovakia and Czechia. Compared to owners, the evidence shows that the Czech managers are more oriented toward the CSR practices, while in Slovakia there is no difference. Such finding can be explained by Hofstede culture difference. In addition, analysis demonstrates that female Slovaks are more oriented to CSR than men, while it is not true in Czechia. Moreover, Czech individuals who graduated in the same field as their business are more oriented to the CSR, whereas in Slovakia this is not. In addition, young and old Slovak entrepreneurs are more oriented to the CSR than those 35-55 years old, manifesting a U-shape type of relationship. The originality of this work is manifested by the fact that it enriches the literature since it is among the first studies to analyze the relationships between owner-manager?s demographics and CSR in the SME segment for Czechia and Slovakia.

Research background: Many contemporary empirical studies and most economic growth theories recognize the importance of innovation as one of the most progressive determinants of socio-economic growth, both in the regional and local perspective. However, much of the empirical literature has discussed the issue of innovativeness and institutional environment without the significant results for small enterprises, especially in peripheral regions. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the institutional support system and its impact on SME innovativeness in Podkarpackie region. In analyzing this case, we raise the following two questions: (1) what are the types of innovation strategies of SMEs in Podkarpackie? (2) what are the factors affecting innovation and potential barriers to further use of institutional support systems aimed at the implementation of innovation in enterprises? Methods: Based on the empirical research, we have analyzed the data (individual in-depth interviews) and found out how the entrepreneurs, R&D, business environment institutions, regional and local authorities assess the use of programs and projects dedicated to innovation in the scope of the institutional support system and what are the barriers encountered by entrepreneurs that limit the implementation of innovation. Findings & Value added: The results of our research show that institutional sup-port systems mitigate negative consequences of peripheral localization of the enterprises, where specific innovation strategy has no influence on SME assessment of innovation effectiveness. Innovation is too costly, and SMEs are too weak in peripheral regions, therefore there is great need for reasonable and flexible institutional support systems. However, the peripheral situation influences this institutional system itself, strengthening the mechanisms of self-censorship.

Research background: SMEs face financial constraints in their development, which limits their access to external funds, tightens their investment possibilities, and limits their growth. Much research effort has been devoted to understanding the nature and sources of this phenomenon. In sharp contrast to this, very little has been said about the role of these factors in explaining the default probability of these types of enterprises. Understanding such interrelationships could help to adopt policies to alleviate the situation of constrained SMEs and lower their default rates. Purpose of the article: This study analyses the role of financial constraint factors in SME defaults. This is done by utilising the financial constraint factors in a newly derived default prediction model. A comparison of the derived model and other SME default prediction models is carried out to assess the potential of financial constraints in the discrimination power of the model. Methods: In this study, we use the Cox semiparametric model, while leaving the baseline hazard rate unspecified and employing macroeconomic variables as explanatory variables. The discrimination power was addressed in terms of the area under the curve (AUC), resulting in out-of-sample testing. The DeLong test was used to compare the AUC of the created and analysed models. The model was estimated on a set of over 213,731 SMEs from 28 counties, covering the period 2014?2019. Findings & value added: It was found that adopting the financial constraint measures can explain the default of small and medium enterprises with high accuracy; however, they do not explain the default of micro enterprises.

Adopting new technologies into the practice of national government can significantly improve the quality of public services and the government’s general performance. In this paper we present the results of our research on Poland’s performance of e-government in comparison to EU15 and NMS12. The analysis is based on data provided by Eurostat’s Information Society’s comprehensive database. We find that Poland, on average, is lagging behind other European countries from both SMEs perspective and especially from citizens perspective in implementing effective technologies in public sector. In this paper we deliver some recommendations for the polish government.

The limitations and new safety restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 had a strong impact on the functioning of numerous manufacturing companies. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among employees of manufacturing companies. A preliminary comparison of the production efficiency (and volume) in terms of the size of enterprises was made – results obtained for micro, small and medium entrprise, as well as for large production enterprise. On the basis of the presented results, it was unequivocally stated that it was much easier for micro and small enterprises to adapt to the introduced changes. They easily expanded the range of products and thus recorded a slight increase in production. Large enterprises, due to the narrow scope of their operations, unfortunately recorded a significant decrease in production – which may also be caused by the discontinuity of the supply chain.

Job satisfaction is one of the most researched topics in management literature taking into consideration the fact that it has been found out that this concept has many practical implications in the workplace. Job satisfaction is very complex phenomenon which is influenced by numerous factors. Previous studies provide a partial view of job satisfaction, because they are usually focused on the relationship between a single factor and job satisfaction, without taking a global view to indicate how different factors simultaneously affect job satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different factors such as: work family balance, teamwork, personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support simultaneously influence job satisfactions. The sample of the study includes employees of Polish small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is used to analyze data collected in surveys from 274 employees. The results contribute to research on job satisfaction by outlining several combinations of factors which create a paths to explain employee job satisfaction: (1) teamwork and supervisor support, (2) personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support with absence of work family balance, (3) work family balance, job security and supervisor support.

The paper aims to examine the Human Resource Development (HRD) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) in Poland between 2007 and 2013. The research is based on theories that support HRD investment specifically in SMEs, and uses the Human Capital Theory (HCT) with some extensions. The paper addresses the question of public support in HRD and international support for development purposes. Finally it stresses that the support may have national and international implications. The research methodology involved a series of computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI) in a sample of 44 SMEs that received EU funding for HRD. It also included computer assisted personal interviews (CAPI) with experts in the ESF, participant observation and analysis of the project documentation. The findings indicate that the ESF effort of international scope had a positive impact in Polish SMEs.

More and more corporations , both multinationals and SMEs, decide that during their business activities they take into consideration such strict social and environmental aspects that are beyond the rules and requirements of the country they operate in. One of its reasons is that the corporate decisions have impacts not only on the immediate environment but also on the whole society. The present study examines and reveals the value priorities of the chief executives and the impact of those on CSR among Hungarian small and medium enterprises. The study also represents the value of the sample. The results of the primary research reveals that the value preferences of the general managers have their impact on the CSR activities of the company and hence certain main values of the individual determine the practice of the CSR. Those leaders who can be characterised by goodwill and universalism are more concerned with CSR and it is clearly shown in their CSR activities. In the examined Hungarian sample a group of leaders (25%) could be distinguished who consider CSR as a competitive advantage. These leaders are considered to be leaders with modern CSR viewpoint. They are committed to CSR and implement the modern CSR approach into practice, into the strategy of the corporation and into their activity and guide their organisation along these aspects.

While having been the object of numerous studies, the link between ERP implementation and SMEs performance still requires understanding. The models are based on a sample of 240 during time of defined activities in the sales process realized during the each month by 40 knowledge workers in each of 5 Polish SMEs announcements of ERP implementations. Our analysis of the financial benefits of these implementations yields mixed results. Our results are encouraging that we find the business activity that can persistent evidence of sales performance associated with ERP investments. This should help alleviate the companies that some have expressed about the viability of ERP given the highly publicized implementation problems at some firms.

The objective of this research is to investigate the perception of owner – managers and their employees regarding entrepreneurial leadership. To develop the research, two questions are raised related to the similarities or differences of the perceptions of both groups with what is established in the literature and between the self – evaluation of the owner – managers and their employees on whether the former perform as an entrepreneurial leader. As a research method, both groups are asked to perform, first individual evaluations and then to match certain behaviours and the levels at which they should appear at certain levels of entrepreneurial leadership capacity. The data gathered during the investigation were processed using the Categorical Principal Components Analysis and revealed the similarities and differences between the perceptions of the owner-managers and their employees on entrepreneurial leadership. In spite of not finding significant differences between what is established in the literature and among the perceptions of the groups under study, interesting nuances stand out that, if not identified and understood, could have a negative effect on the performance of SMEs. The results of the research demonstrated the importance of the approach of behaviour and perception in the study of entrepreneurial leadership.

The aim of the study is to analyze selected indicators of economic development and entrepreneurship in the regions of Eastern Polish border over the years 2004–2013. A preliminary analysis of the problem made it possible to place the main research hypothesis, which assumes that between the level of economic development of the region and the development of entrepreneurship, there is a close correlation. To a greater extent, higher level of development stimulates the development of entrepreneurship. Less developed regions cannot reduce barriers to entrepreneurship (e.g. infrastructure).

The main objective of the current study is to examine the impact of the innovation types such as product, process and market innovation on the performance of the Indonesian SMEs. Additionally, the study has also examined the mediating role of organizational innovativeness. The study has adopted the quantitative method of data collection and gathered the primary data from the respondents by using questionnaires. The employees of research and development department of SMEs in Indonesia are the respondents that have been selected by using simple random sampling. The researcher has employed the statistical tools and procedures to analyze the data which was obtained from the self-administered questionnaires. For data analysation in the current study we have used the mixture of inferential and statistical tools. For getting the complete questionnaires all efforts had provided positive result. The results show that the performance of the firm is positively influenced by these four dimensions. The structural linkage among innovative skills (Organizational innovation, Product innovation, Marketing innovation, Process innovation) significantly and positively influenced the performance of SMEs which is determined in a single model. Practically, the innovative procedures for the production of high-quality goods and services, with new or advanced technology obviously enhances the performance of SMEs firm. For a long period of a time company aims for innovation and innovative technology that plays a vital role in high and competitive profit.
Pracownicy działu badań i rozwoju MŚP w Indonezji to respondenci, którzy zostali wybrani metodą prostego losowania. Badacz posłużył się narzędziami i procedurami statystycznymi do analizy danych uzyskanych z samodzielnie wypełnianych kwestionariuszy. Do analizy danych w obecnym badaniu wykorzystaliśmy połączenie narzędzi wnioskowania i statystyki.

The main factor in improving the level of socio-economic development of the region, its competitiveness and investment attractiveness, in addition to the endogenous growth factors, environmental sustainability and openness of the region, is a dynamically functioning business sector, which is the core of each of the regional economy – especially the SME sector. Modern economics is based on the paradigm of enterprise economy guardian of the diversity of production, technological progress and innovation. The basis for the economic development of this concept are those small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the source of competitiveness and changes in the environment and social-economic. The European Union has set a concrete plan, which has lead to the implementation over the period 2010–2020 fi ve specifi c purposes including: innovation, education, employment, social inclusion and climate change/energy. In each of these areas, all Member States have designated, in turn, their own national targets. The Strategy Europe 2020 is equipped with appropriate instruments, which are to contribute to the development of entrepreneurship in the EU. The purpose of this article is therefore to analyze and assess the development of entrepreneurship in selected EU countries after the implementation of the Strategy Europe 2020.

The aim of this paper is to present the role of management accounting in companies at an early stage of development and to identify how management accounting systems are designed and used in organizations. The conclusions are based on qualitative case studies of fifteen companies at an early stage of development. The study showed that business entities classified as enterprising used a wider spectrum of management accounting tools than potential enterprisers. The most popular tools in the surveyed enterprises were evaluation and decision-making tools, and they were also highly rated by all owners. According to the research findings, these tools have proven to be more popular than those in the budgeting area. Entrepreneurs are more likely to use traditional budgeting methods, and only occasionally pointed to the usefulness of more advanced forms of budgeting, such as flexible budgeting. Tools belonging to the category of strategic analyses were by far the most popular.

This paper focuses on the role of small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) in enhancing the competitiveness and logistics performance of multi-port gateway regions and associated inland logistics systems. The concepts developed will be applied to the ports in the northeast of China, a multi-port gateway region around the Bohai Sea Economic Rim (BER). Port competition is analyzed by multi-variable methodology and generalized common characteristics of SMPs compared to gateway ports, and the similarities of SMPs and SMEs are also compared. Later in this paper, we analyze the role of a SMP in such region in different variables: (a) cargo volume and market share; (b) international connectivity; (c) relative cluster position; (d) port city and hinterland connection; and (e) logistics and distribution function. The five-dimension analysis combined with in-depth cases study of typical Yingkou port describes a profile of SMPs in the BER and provides future study possibility for more SMPs cases worldwide.

Subject and purpose of work: The subject of the article is an analysis of the state aid rules by state authorities in the context of calculating the amount of state aid. This problem was discussed on the basis of a relatively new form of assistance repayable instruments. The aim of this article is to identify the noncompliance of the rules generally applicable to the rules for repayable support. Materials and methods: In order to achieve the objectives set, the analysis of the identified problems was based on non-reactive research involving the assessment of available information. It included studies of normative acts, literature of the subject and reports and analyzes. Results: It has been identified that the current form of act on State aid cases does not take into account the specific nature of aid calculation under return instruments, which is that the final value of the state aid is known only after the repayment of the financial instrument. Conclusions: The legislator should adjust the law on proceedings in state aid cases, the more frequently used form of State intervention is repayable finance. The current practice differs from the literal wording of the provisions in question and should therefore be amended to adapt the provisions to this form of aid.
Opis:
The impact the last financial crisis had on the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sector varied across countries, affecting them on different levels and to a different extent. The economic situation in Poland during and after the financial crisis was quite stable compared to other EU member states. SMEs represent one of the most important segments of the economy of every country. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a prediction model which easily adapts to the characteristics of SMEs. Since the Altman Z-Score model was devised, numerous studies on bankruptcy prediction have been written. Most of them involve the application of traditional methods, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA), logistic regression and probit analysis. However, most recent studies in the area of bankruptcy prediction focus on more advanced methods, such as case-based reasoning, genetic algorithms and neural networks. In this paper, the effectiveness of LDA and SVM predictions were compared. A sample of SMEs was used in the empirical analysis, financial ratios were utilised and non-financial factors were taken account of. The hypothesis assuming that multidimensional discrimination was more effective was verified on the basis of the obtained results.

Opis:
Innovation plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable economic development. It is a fundamental element in the success of companies, corporations, and industries, but the process of innovation is an expensive endeavor that requires significant financial re-sources. The objective is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different financing tools, including government grants, bank loans, self-financing, crowd-funding, seed financing, and venture capital by analyzing case studies and results of research surveys. The first part of this research will explore the concept, types, and classification of innovation. The empirical part is based on a discussion of survey results obtained from 59 SMEs, including the factors that influence SMEs' decisions to seek financing for innovation. The research method used in this study is qualitative research in terms of applied and descriptive approaches; various resources were used including library materials, research papers, survey data, and questionnaires with entrepreneurs and business owners. The objective was to analyze obstacles and opportunities as well as the most suitable financing method required by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to support their innovation. The results show that the choice of the financing method depends on several factors, including the type and stage of innovation, the scope of the company, the particular industry, and the risk involved for both the innovator and the investor.
