The author is looking for traces of subjectivity in the scientific texts of an eminent Polish linguist. As the determinants of individual style, she recognizes certificates of reading (not only what the author reads but also how he reads), recognizing that the figures of the intertextual relationship (references, quotations, allusions, polemics) allows one to define the personality of the subject. She is interested in the plane of reflection, which manifests itself in the attitude of the scholar to the values of contemporary culture, to the change in the ideals of science, to the place and tasks of the choices of humanists and scholars (methodology, issues, forms of expression). She also finds features of individuality in the preferences of the author in the structure of his speech – composition, construction, syntax, lexis.

The author focuses on the history of the Polish scientific style. The Polish scientific style begun to evolve in the sixteenth century. Science is a vehicle for empirical, theoretical, and practical knowledge about the natural world. In the 16th century, many scholars believed that mathematics was the right tool for solving practical problems often faced by craftsmen and merchants. The first Polish texts on mathematics proposed a lecture about the basics of arithmetic and geometry. The author discusses the first scientific texts written in Polish, namely Algorithmus: To jest nauka Liczby: Polsk¹ rzecz¹ wydana (1538) (Algorithmus: This is the Science of Numbers: Published in the Polish Language) by Tomasz K³os, Algorytm (1553) (Algorithmus) by Bernard Wojewódka and Geometria, To jest Miernicka Nauka, po polsku krótko napisana z greckich i z ³aciñskich (Geometry, This is the science of Land Surveyors, briefly in the Polish Language written from Greek and Latin Books) (1566) by Stanis³aw Grzepski. The analysis of the language of science formation in the 16th century Poland shows that already in the early phase of its creation certain properties that characterize Polish modern academic discourse can be seen, namely bilingual communication, preference for specialist language, a rhetorical figure and the use of specific forms of the verb.

The author focuses on the history of the Polish scientific educational style. The 18th century science in is an area for empirical, theoretical, and practical knowledge of the natural world. The article discusses a Polish text by Krzysztof Kluk, Zwierząt domowych i dzikich, osobliwie krajowych, historii naturalnej początki i gospodarstwo (The beginnings of natural history and husbandry of farmed and wild animals, of domestic animals in particular) (vol. 1, 1779). The author provides us with a basic outline of zoology in 18th century and proposes a lecture on animals living in Poland. His lecture has two narrative planes: scientific and colloquial. In this article, the author proposes a methodology of text analysis. Careful stylistic analysis of 18th century scientific texts shows that Polish handbooks of zoology and economy have features that characterize modern scientific texts, namely bilingual communication, preference for specialist language, rhetorical figures, use of specific verb forms and distinct narrative structure.

The main questions raised in the article is the existence of individual, personal kind of an academic style. The author analyses academic texts of Aleksander Brückner and Stanisław Rospond – splendid scientists, active in the 1st half of the 20th century. The analysis of lexical, phraseological and syntactical level shows that all expressivisms, colloquialisms, ordinarities found in the texts belonged to the stylistic convention of the times. They were not connected with popular character of the texts. Individual characteristics are to be found in the range and the use of stylistic means which are beyond the linguistic canon typical for contemporary academic texts.

The article deals with the radical style of communication in contemporary Polish reportage based on the text Abchazja by Wojciech Górecki. The author attempts to present the syntactic features of the text in question in the light of radicalism and to locate the genre of reportage between literary, journalistic and scientific research based on the findings of the following authorities: Kazimierz Wolny-Zmorzyński, Andrzej Kaliszewski and Wojciech Furman. The meaning of the term reportage is defined using the definitions of Janusz Sławiński, Czesław Niedzielski and Julian Maślanka. In her work, the author uses the traditional syntactic model of Zenon Klemensiewicz, and Stanisław Jodłowski, and following to the postulates of Maria Kniagininowa, and Marek Ruszkowski she extracts a sample of 200 statements from the narrative constructions of the text. She analyzes in detail the relations between narrative and dialogue, simple and complex, verbal and verbless, paratactic, and hypotactic statements. She also focuses on the stylistic functions of syntactic constructions. As a result, in the reportage Abchazja the author observes 1) the reporting syntactic tendency, 2) dynamic as an important stylistic feature, 3) journalistic style predominance.
Artykuł traktuje o radykalnym stylu komunikacji we współczesnym polskim reportażu na podstawie tekstu Abchazja Wojciecha Góreckiego. Autorka podejmuje próbę przedstawienia syntaktycznych cech omawianego tekstu w świetle radykalizmu oraz zlokalizowania gatunku reportażu pomiędzy literackością, publicystyką i naukowością na podstawie ustaleń autorytetów, takich jak: Kazimierz Wolny-Zmorzyński, Andrzej Kaliszewski oraz Wojciech Furman. Ramy znaczeniowe terminu reportaż określa, posiłkując się definicjami Janusza Sławińskiego, Czesława Niedzielskiego oraz Juliana Maślanki. W swojej pracy używa tradycyjnego modelu składniowego Zenona Klemensiewicza i Stanisława Jodłowskiego, a zgodnie z postulatami Marii Kniagininowej oraz Marka Ruszkowskiego spośród konstrukcji narracyjnych tekstu dokonuje doboru próby równej 200 wypowiedzeń. W szczegółowy sposób analizuje relacje procentowe zachodzące pomiędzy wypowiedzeniami narracyjnymi a dialogowymi, pojedynczymi a złożonymi, werbalnymi a niewerbalnymi oraz parataktycznymi a hipotaktycznymi. Zwraca uwagę na funkcje stylistyczne, jakie pełnią poszczególne konstrukcje syntaktyczne. W rezultacie autorka tekstu zauważa w reportażu Abchazja 1) tendencję do budowania składni sprawozdawczej, 2) dynamizację tekstu jako ważną funkcję stylistyczną, 3) przewagę stylu dziennikarskiego w kształtowaniu cech omawianego reportażu.

Artykuł jest zaproszeniem do ponownego namysłu nad nienową i niekoniecznie oryginalną kwestią — rolą metafory w pisarstwie naukowym. Bezpośrednim pretekstem jest metafora kompasu, mapy i treningu, a w innym planie „starych bukłaków, do których wlewa się młode wino”. Figur tych używa Sebastian Gałecki jako swoistego zwieńczenia swojej rozprawy Etyka chrześcijańska dla postchrześcijańskiej epoki, konfrontującej koncepcje: etyki sprawności charakteru (cnoty) (Alasdair MacIntyre), sumienia (John Henry Newman) i nowej teorii prawa naturalnego (John Finnis). Pozostawiając na uboczu istotę treści rozprawy, próbuję rozpoznać kilka kwestii i zagrożeń związanych ze stosowaniem przez autorów metafor. Uchodzą one, w nomenklaturze Umberto Eco, za „gorące” i metodologicznie podejrzane elementy tak samej refleksji, jak i sposobu pisania w nauce. Mimo wątpliwości i zastrzeżeń wobec metafory jako figury „nienaukowej”, chciałbym bronić prawa do jej poprawnego używania w filozofii, szczególnie – etyce. Za przykład takiego właśnie użycia uważam ich zastosowanie w książce Sebastiana Gałeckiego.
The article is an invitation to rethink a new and not necessarily original question — the role of metaphor in scientific writing. The immediate pretext is the metaphor of the compass, map, and training, and, in another plan, “old wineskins into which new wine is poured.” These figures are used by Sebastian Gałecki as the culmination of his dissertation Etyka chrześcijańska dla postchrześcijańskiej epoki [Christian Ethics for the Post-Christian Age], confronting the three concepts: ethics of character efficiency (virtue) (Alasdair MacIntyre), conscience (John Henry Newman), and the new theory of natural law (John Finnis). Leaving aside the essence of the content of the dissertation, I try to identify several issues and threats related to the use of metaphors by the authors. In the Umberto Eco terminology, they are regarded as “hot” and methodologically problematic elements of reflection and the way of writing in science. Despite the doubts and reservations about the metaphor as an “unscientific” figure, I would like to defend the right to its correct use in philosophy, especially in ethics. As an example of such use, I consider their use in Sebatian Gałecki’s book.

Autorka analizuje kompozycję, język i styl 16 artykułów przyjętych do druku w pewnym czasopiśmie muzealnym. Rozpatruje je w kontekście komunikacyjnym, to jest z punktu widzenia potrzeb i celów wymiany informacji naukowej w środowisku humanistów z różnych dziedzin. Korzysta z definicji kompetencji komunikacyjnej opracowanej przez Stanisława Grabiasa. Traktując teksty jako celowe wypowiedzi konkretnych osób realizowane w stopniu odzwierciedlającym poziom ich sprawności komunikacyjnych, bada kompetencje nadawców w zakresie ich sprawności systemowej, społecznej, sytuacyjnej i pragmatycznej.
The author analyses the arrangement, the style and the language in 16 papers approved for print in a Polish professional museum journal. She views them in the communication context i.e. from the point of view of the needs and goals of scientific information exchange among scholars from various areas of the humanities. The author uses the definition of communication skills coined by Stanisław Grabias. By approaching the texts as intentional expressions of specific individuals reflecting their communication skills, the author examines the writers’ systematic, social, situational and pragmatic linguistic proficiency.

The dynamie chaos theory applied to linguistics casts light on the role of Perm school of functional stylistics (M.N. Kozhina) as an odd attractor promoting the study of text in dynamics, especially the functional stylistic-semantic categories of text.It is argued here that modem situation in linguistics is shaped by the application of global context (individual cognitive system - on the personal level, and culture in all its heterogeneity - on the social level) to the mainstream research of language in use. This methodological demand is met by functional pragmatics as whole semiotics embracing all aspects of semiosis. lt ensures the blend of cognitive and interpretive models with their specific procedures in revealing the subtleties of language in use. That is exemplified in the analysis of a chunk of fictive text. Besides, we set forth the category of tonality which denotes attitudes and tones permeating discourse, in the light ofM.N. Kozhina's contribution to the field.

The dissemination of results has always been an important aspect of the research process. The translation plays here an increasingly important role. In view of the fact that the languages of science differ significantly, that the scientific style is simultaneously distinguished by many personal, universal and cultural features, the translation appears not to be an easy undertaking. Following the Galtung’s concept of intellectual styles we present the distinguishing features of the Teutonic and Saxonic style on the example of German and English language.

The author considers the possibility of applying of the H.P. Grice’s cooperation principle to the study of scientific, in particular, humanistic discourses. It is worlh noticing that the principle of cooperation in science contrasts with its paradigmatic system and with the competition of the different scientific groups, although the requirements of cooperation háve in the scientific research a prevailing weight. The author shows the implementation in the scientific communication of the Grice’s maxims which concem four categories: quality, quantity, relation and manner.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę charakterystyki eksplicytnych wykładników relacji nadawczo-odbiorczych w dawnych językoznawczych tekstach naukowych (z przełomu XIX i XX w.) i wskazania ich funkcji w analizowanych tekstach. Materiał badawczy stanowią cztery dawne publikacje naukowe (Antoniego Kaliny, Jana Łosia, Aleksandra Brücknera i Zenona Klemensiewicza). Opisano specyfikę procesu komunikacji naukowej (z uwzględnieniem wszystkich komponentów aktu komunikacji), zastosowano metodę próbki 100-wyrazowej (analizy wszystkich predykatów występujących we fragmencie w środkowej partii tekstu) i na tej podstawie skonstruowano wnioski dotyczące częstotliwości ich występowania w dawnych tekstach.
The purpose of the present article is to describe and classify the clearly formulated exponents of sender-receiver in old scholarly linguistics-related texts (published at the turn of the 20th century). The research material includes four linguistic publications (written by Antoni Kalina, Jan Łoś, Aleksander Brückner and Zenon Klemensiewicz). The author described the specifics of communication process in science (taking into account all components of act of communication) and used the method of 1000-words sample (analysis of all predicates occurring in a fragment from the middle part of the text). On the basis the author drew conclusions about them frequency in analyzed publications.

W komentarzu do fragmentów Epistemologii historycznej poświęconych problemowi wizualizacji i technikom notowania w naukach przyrodniczych odwołam się do tez Patera Galisona z monografii „Image and logic: a material culture of microphysics”, aby dokonać krytycznej analizy ustaleń Hansa-Jörga Rheinbergera w kontekście współczesnej praktyki eksperymentalnej wspomaganej komputerowo. Udzielę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy tezy zawarte w Epistemologii historycznej dotyczące wizualizacji i notowania można utrzymać w konfrontacji z komputerowym stylem badań naukowych, dominującym w pracach eksperymentalnych od lat osiemdziesiątych XX wieku.
In my comment to fragments of Historical Epistemology, devoted to the problem of visualization and recording techniques in natural sciences, I refer to Peter Galison’s theses presented in his book Image and Logic: a Material Culture of Microphysics in order to analyse critically Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s claims in the context of modern experimental practice engaging computers. I answer for the question whether the theses included in the Historical Epistemology concerning visualization and recording are acceptable when they are confronted with the computer style of scientific research prevailing in experimental research since the 80-ties of the 20th century.

У артыкуле прааналізаваны ўмовы і разгледжаны асаблівасці фармавання навуковага стылю беларускай літаратурнай мовы пачатку ХХ ст. (1900–1920 гг.), якія сталі асновай для станаўлення навуковага стылю ў сучаснай мове. Акцэнтавана ўвага на сацыяльна-гістарычным і культурна-палітычным кантэксце фармавання беларускай навуковай мовы ў пачатку ХХ ст., ролі навуковых устаноў таго часу, навукова-папулярных і навукова-вучэбных прац, прадстаўленых па асобных галінах назвамі, у развіцці навуковага стылю беларускай мовы адзначанага перыяду. Актуалізаваны пытанні станаўлення беларускай тэрміналогіі, акрэслены лексічныя, марфалагічныя і сінтаксічныя адметнасці мовы навукі. Адзначаны характэрныя лінгвас-тылістычныя асаблівасці навуковых прац, а таксама іх жанравая прыналежнасць і структура
W artykule przeanalizowano warunki i zbadano cechy kształtowania się stylu naukowego białoruskiego języka literackiego na początku XX wieku (1900–1920), który stał się podstawą kształtowania stylu naukowego w dalszym jego rozwoju we współczesnym języku białoruskim. Nacisk kładziony jest na społeczno-historyczny i kulturowo-polityczny kontekst kształtowania się białoruskiego języka naukowego na początku XX w., rolę instytucji naukowych tamtych czasów, prac popularnonaukowych i naukowo-dydaktycznych prezentowanych w po¬-szczególnych gałęziach przemysłu, w rozwoju stylu naukowego języka biało-ruskiego omawianego okresu. Zaktualizowano zagadnienia dotyczące powstawania białoruskiej terminologii, zarysowano leksykalne, morfologiczne i składniowe cechy języka nauki. Wyróżniono charakterystyczne cechy językowe prac naukowych, a także ich przynależność gatunkową i strukturę.
The article analyzes the conditions and formation features of the scientific style of the Belarusian literary language of the early XX century (1900–1920), which came to be the basis for the formation of the scientific style in its further development in modern language. Emphasis is placed on the socio-historical and cultural-political context of the formation of the Belarusian scientific language in the early XX century, the role of scientific institutions of that time, popular science and scientific-educational works presented in certain fields under relevant names in the development of the scientific style of the Belarusian language in that period. The issues of Belarusian terminology formation are actualized, lexical, morphological and syntactic features of the language of science are outlined. The characteristic linguistic and stylistic features of scientific works, as well as their genre affiliation and structure are identified.
