The paper presents the research studies carried out on the reverberation time of rooms, in terms of theoretical aspects and applicability potentials. Over the last century a very large number of scientists have been attempting to work out models describing the reverberation time in enclosed rooms. They have also been trying to apply these models for the description of various acoustic parameters of the interior, i.e. the intelligibility of speech, clarity, articulation, etc. In fact, all these models are based on the Sabine’s statistical method. The paper presents the work of the scientists working on this problem, together with prospective applicability potentials. Such a review may be helpful for researchers, designers or architects involved in the discussed subject.

This article deals with social problems experienced by people who exclude certain groups of products from their everyday diet. These exclusions stem from various reasons and involve a range of everyday material and social practices. They evoke particular kinds of social interactions within the household, among hosts and guests, and also induce different reflexive interpretations of the participants.The aim of this paper is to explore the problem of how elimination diets are practised and explained on an everyday basis, and to describe particular strategies and techniques undertaken by food excluders in shops, in their kitchens, and at the table. The empirical basis for the qualitative investigation is a set of eight participant observations combined with in-depth interviews conducted with urban residents with higher education living in northern Poland.

Biblioteki pełnią różnorodne funkcje we współczesnym otoczeniu społecznym. Uczestniczą w tworzeniu kapitału intelektualnego i społecznego, wpływają na wzrost korzyści ekonomicznych użytkowników i całego społeczeństwa. W artykule omówiono główne podejścia i metody badawcze w zakresie oceny korzyści ekonomicznych płynących z funkcjonowania bibliotek. Skupiono się na metodzie analizy kosztów w stosunku do korzyści (ang. CBA – cost-benefit analysis), metodzie analizy warunkowej (ang. CVM – contigent valuation method), określaniu wartości dodanej dla użytkownika (ang. consumer surplus method) i metodologii oceny stopy wzrostu z inwestycji (ang. ROI – return of investment). Przeanalizowano również różne projekty badań prowadzone na świecie w tym zakresie.
Libraries play different important roles in contemporary society. They contribute to advancement of intellectual and social capital and have a particular impact on economic benefits of their surroundings. This paper gives an overview of the main approaches to library economic impact research. These include: cost effectiveness research, CBA – cost-benefit analysis, CVM – contigent valuation method, consumer surplus method and ROI (Return of Investment). In addition, the author analyses different available research initiatives in this area.

The International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) holds a dominant role globally, its mission, since 1938, being to offer quality information and educate in the field of international taxation. The organisation has seventy experts from over thirty countries, along with the contributing correspondents in 120 countries, and keeps the world’s largest tax library. IBFD’s international offer includes independent tax/fiscal studies and research into the international tax law of the EU; education; international tax information; and, government consulting. IBFD’s cooperation with Poland and Polish tax law professors dates back to the 1960s and has been developing ever since.

The contribution discusses the choice of language of French Germanists in their scientific publications. Contrary to the international academic world and the spreading of English in it, this pilot study to a bigger survey shows that the discipline of German Studies in France only uses two languages: German as the object language and the lingua franca of the guild, and French as meta-language and conveying code for the national language community. However as a recent development a slight Anglicisation can be observed.

An increased interest in qualitative research is connected with the revival of the discussion on reliability and credibility of research conducted by qualitative methods. The aim of the article is to present certain selected issues related to conducting qualitative research. Relatively common research methods used in this area are a case study and, well established in the literature on educational research, participatory action research. Other important methods are observations and interviews that are often used as a way of collecting qualitative data, which, supplemented by actual writing, are already recognized as research methods. Finally, the article describes problems of researcher’s positioning towards subjects and the social justice pedagogy based on the concept of service learning (learning in the service of society).

It was during Witold Hensel’s studies at the University of Poznań and the first years of his working at the Poznań University right before the Second World War when his interests and the main trends of his scientific career were crystallized. It was only just when the medieval archaeology in Poland, as the result of some spectacular discoveries in the main centres of the first Piasts’ State, namely in Gniezno and Poznań, was developing. At the same time in the Poznań Centre an interdisciplinary cooperation between humanities (ethnography and history) and natural sciences started. Comparative studies were also widely carried, supported by intensive international contacts. Witold Hensel, a young archaeologist at that time, was an active participant of them. As the sum of all that, it was nobody else but Witold Hensel who in 1946, not long after the WWII was over, formulated a new research project, met with enthusiasm by other scientists, to celebrate the first millennium of the rise of the Polish State, which was soon to come. It was the first so widely planned interdisciplinary project in humanities (and it is worth mentioning that palaeobilogists were also involved) and the obtained results were immense. For the Polish medieval archaeology it was the time of a huge increase in terms of appearance and development of institutions and methodology as well as in number of scientists interested in the subject. It all led to some sort of “outflow” of the members of the Polish archaeological school to the West-European countries (Italy, France and further on also to some others) what, to a large extent, gave the basis for some studies carried on in the field in those areas. The other Witold Hensel’s research trends, later on followed by a huge number of his students, were concerned with settlement studies based on detailed inventarisation and publication of archaeological sources, as well as comparative studies carried out on a large scale. The latter were fulfilled by Witold Hensel not only in his scientific publications (especially some editions of “Słowiańszczyzna wczesnośredniowieczna” (Early medieval Slav lands). He also created and edited a new interdisciplinary periodical titled “Slavia Antiqua”, which was his attempt to continue ideas formulated by specialists of different Slavic disciplines already before the war. Above all however, there was his active participation in foundation of the International Union of Slavic Archaeology. The Union, by its congresses and symposia as well as publications, positively influenced studies in medieval archaeology in general.

This paper focuses on an African street experienced as profoundly contradictory. It departs from Adeline Masquelier`s observation that this landscape is an object of both fascination and terror, and a space of both fear and desire. The street offers jobs, goods and economic opportunities, but it can also lead to isolation, marginalization and fatalities. The paper is based on field research undertook in Omdurman in 2013 and granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The article presents reflexivity as an important attribute of pedagogical research. Introduction contains a brief historical outline of the tradition of social and humanistic research (from the positivist paradigm to the relativization, from a single paradigm to multiplicity of paradigms). Nowadays a pluri-paradigmatic approach became more popular amongst in methodology and is equated with the maturity of discipline. The main part of the article presents the most important assumptions of reflective studies. The first premise concerns cognition, which will never be completely certain and objective. Researcher could remain impartial. Knowledge is socially and personally involved. The most common feature in contemporary world descriptions is changeability. No research – and especially reflexive – can/should be planned or carried out without knowing the theory of the research subject. There are no isolated phenomena in the socio-cultural reality surrounding humanity. Reflexive studies recognize the relationship between the subjective perspective of the subject and the objective structure that creates the living space of the subjects studied. The reflexive stream of study does not have to lead to the creation of new theory.

The aim of the article is to describe the situation of mothers who face alcohol problems of their adult children. We are primarily interested in female narratives, which are a reflection on the situation of mothers connected with adult children addicted to alcohol. We are trying to touch upon the essence of maternal experience. The inspiration for this presentation of the problem was a visible gap in the research carried out in the field of social sciences, which would concern directly the parents of harmful drinkers. The stage of designing and conducting the research, as well as the process of analyzing the collected empirical data, allowed for in-depth reflection on the experiences of the narrators in the context of femininity and motherhood. Prowadzone przez nas badania miały charakter jakościowy, umieszczone zostały w paradygmacie interpretatywnym (interakcjonizm symboliczny) wraz z wykorzystaniem metodologii teorii ugruntowanej.

The historical experience of forming the national model of research and research pedagogical staff of higher qualification training in 1919-1929 is enlightened in the article. It differed from Russian one in field scheme and structure, had its own managerial vertical. The historical and educational analysis of the problem under research is made on the basis of systems and structural, historiographical, cultural, historical reconstruction of knowledge, historical and national, historical and educational approaches. The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).
