Joseph Ratzinger, chosen for the See of Peter 19 April 2005, after three years of papal ministry, may be, in my opinion, considered a worthy continuator of John Paul’s II mission, the latter described as the Human Rights Pope due to his activities in the field. The main goal of this essay is to analyze Benedict XVI’s most characteristic practices and texts, which directly refer to the issue of human rights, especially in the context of respect for and protection of human rights. The next aim is to show the contexts in which John Paul II’s great friend invokes or refers to the legacy of his eminent predecessor and to demonstrate the differences between John Paul II and Benedict XVI’s perception of the significance of human rights in the lives of contemporary societies.

The scientific study of religion creates a considerable challenge to religious communities, including Christian communities and denominations. Since such a study makes religion a subject of scientific explanation instead of perceiving it as a partner of dialogue with science, the religious attitude towards the outcomes of the scientific study of religion requires employing interpretive tools other than those usually used to understand the relation between science and religion. The scientific study of religion takes different forms, but a unique role is played by conceptions that attempt to find the natural foundations and determinants of religious thought and behavior. The results of those attempts – new theories of religion – are popularized, penetrate social consciousness, and are often used as a basis for a worldview according to which religion is nothing more than a purely natural phenomenon. However, in late modernity, reflexivity based on expert knowledge, including scientific knowledge, forces the change of religious thinking and the reorganization of religious action. This article points to three different reactions of Christian tradition to the attempts to naturalize religion, including a decisive rejection of the naturalist worldview as well as various forms of adaptation and transformation of the religious view of the world through introducing naturalist premises.

Cognitive science of religion (CSR) is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on the cognitive foundations of religion. The aim of this article is to discuss the specificity of CSR and demonstrate that, although it is part of cognitive science, it can also be seen as an anthropological paradigm in its own right. I argue that such a view can be supported by highlighting the importance of cultural anthropology for the SCR genesis (especially the role of anthropological theories and the resulting research methods, the involvement of anthropologists in the emergence of the new paradigm) and stressing the way in which contemporary anthropology benefits from theories formulated within CSR, the debates they generate and inter-institutional collaborations. Thus, I wish to highlight the dual nature of CSR as part and parcel of both cognitive science and contemporary psychological anthropology.

Among the five religions (zōngjiào) whose followers operate in eight legal organizations in the Peo-ple’s Republic of China, there is no Confucianism (rújiā). Interestingly, for over half a century, researchers of this tradition have been engaged in a lively, serious discussion about the possibility of recognizing it as a religion. At the beginning of the article, the difficulties associated with this issue are mentioned. Then, by way of introduction, Confucius’s religiosity as illustrated in the Analects is discussed. The main part presents several rele-vant approaches to Confucianism that emphasize, although for different reasons, its religious character. They are accompanied by various references to the phenomenon of religion, which constitute their context, as well as reservations expressed towards these approaches. Additionally, the text contains comments on Chinese spiritu-ality, which are important in relation to attempts to resolve the discussed issue.

The article shows the importance of religious and ethical approaches to climate change. Since early 70s we know that ecological crisis can’t be solved only by technical means. In current climate debate we hear not only voices of government leaders and business representatives. We see that in the debate are involved also scientists, philosophers, NGO representatives, writers, and … religious leaders. Consequences of decision that will be made on the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009 have religious and ethical perspectives and the debate must be enriched with these dimensions. Religion and ethics bring values to the climate debate which have the needed potential to affect politicians to make right decisions and ordinary people to change their live style.

Im Artikel „Der außerschulische Religionsunterricht in den Jahren 1961-1973 auf dem Gebiet der Diözese Kielce” wurde versucht, das Thema der Verdrängung des Religionsunterrichts aus den Bildungseinrichtungen in sogenannte Katechetische Punkte auf dem Gebiet der Diözese Kielce zu behandeln. In der Einführung werden die einzelnen Etappen der schrittweisen Laizisierung des Schulwesens vorgestellt, bis hin zur entscheidenden Verabschiedung des „Gesetzes über die Entwicklung des Bildungs- und Erziehungssystems” vom 15. Juli 1961, welches die rechtliche Grundlage für die Vertreibung des Religionsunterrichts aus dem Schulgebäuden lieferte. Der zweite Teil des Artikels konzentriert sich auf die staatlichen Rechtsakte zur Legalisierung des außerschulischen Religionsunterrichts. Geschildert wurde auch die Reaktion der polnischen Bischofskonferenz und der Kurienbehörde der Diözese Kielce auf das Gesetz über den weltlichen Charakter der Schule sowie auf zahlreiche Anordnungen mit rigoristischen Vorschriften, die die Führung katechetischer Zentren und die Arbeit der Katecheten erschweren und einschränken sollten. Verwiesen wird auf die wichtigsten Probleme im Zusammenhang mit der Katechisierung: Fragen der zahlenmäßigen Teilnahme, der Zahl der Beschäftigten, der Berichterstattung, der Registrierung, der Teilnahmefrequenz und der Visitation der katechetischen Punkte. Herangezogen wurden zahlreiche statistische Aufzählungen, die sowohl aus Archivmaterialien als auch aus eigenen Berechnungen stammen. Sie wurden verwendet, um die sich verändernde Situation und die weiteren Spannungen zwischen den kommunistischen Machthabern und der Kirche auf katechetischem Gebiet aufzuzeigen. Der vorläufige Höhepunkt des Konflikts entfiel auf das Jahr 1973. Damals verzichteten die staatlichen Behörden auf die Kontrolle der katechetischen Punkte, aber die neuen gesetzlichen Regelungen über die öffentliche Bildung, einschließlich der Unterrichtsprogramme, waren bar jedweder religiöser Kontexte. Das letzte Kapitel des vorliegenden Artikels ist dem Kampf der Katecheten um die katechetischen Punkte gewidmet. Hier wurden die Haltungen mehrerer Katecheten – sowohl Geistlicher als auch Laien – präsentiert, die trotz Repressionen und auferlegter Strafmaßnahmen nicht aufgehört haben, die Katechisierung fortzusetzen. Erwähnt werden auch typische Arten der Schikanierung von Katecheten sowie der Umfang der angewandten Strafmaßnahmen. Bereichert wird dieses Kapitel durch Informationen über die hygienischen und sanitären Bedingungen in den Punkten des außerschulischen Religionsunterrichts sowie über die Zusammenarbeit der Katecheten mit den Pfarrgemeindemitgliedern auf katechetischem Gebiet.

In 1967, Thomas Luckmann published ‘Invisible Religion’ – a book in which he entered a polemic with the existing tradition of research on religion and religiosity and indicated that religion should be treated by social sciences as a permanent process. The author of the article recalls the theses of a German sociologist to show which aspects of Polish research in the sociology of religion may be considered incomplete – e.g., lack of theoretical consistency, as well as ease of inference. He then looks again at the concept of invisible religion, describing eight of its most important aspects. Finally, theoretical considerations of Thomas Luckmann’s thesis allow us to look at it from a universal perspective and show in which areas of research into Polish society the concept of invisible religion can still be used.

Religion was a recurrent theme in Georg Simmel’s thought. Despite this fact, and despite the current rediscovery of Simmel’s ideas, his insights into religion remain relatively neglected. The task of integrating Simmel’s legacy into the current study of religion remains a continuing challenge. This paper, based on an on-going study of Simmel’s work (involving a close reading of his writings in the original version), reflects on his conceptualisation of the relationship between religion understood as an objective, social and historical phenomenon and subjective religiosity. In Simmel’s view, the religious perspective – a “particular spiritual quality” or “attitude of the soul”, a way of looking at the world as a whole – constitutes a kind of pre-stage of religion. This particular perspective of a religion-like (religioid) character makes up an individual foundation for religion, but it can also express itself in other cultural pursuits, like science or art. It only becomes religion after it assumes a specific form in human interaction. Simmel claims that many human relations have a religious character; faith, which is regarded as the substance of religion, is first a relationship between individuals. Out of the subjective faith-process there develops an object for that faith: the idea of God, who is “the absolute object of human faith”. For Simmel, the idea of God (conceived of as the unity of existence, the coincidentia oppositorum) is constitutive for religion.

Religion didactics is one of the main and important subdisciplines of the integral catechetics. Recently, since the return of religion teaching to Polish schools (1990), intensive, interdisciplinary and multi-faceted religion didactics research has been conducted. The analyses performed in this study aimed at presenting the role of religion didactics in the religious education of children and adolescents. Analysis of the basic literature on religion didactics and religious education of children and adolescents was used to first point out the proper understanding of the object of studies of religion didactics. Subsequently, the functions of religion didactics in the religious education of children and adolescents were analysed and the place of the religion didactics in the educational activity of a religion teacher was shown. The final comments pointed out the need for taking up new issues associated with e-learning and the use of new information and communication technologies in religion teaching research. It is also important to emphasise the importance of combining traditional issues with those associated with methodological innovations, including new information and communication technologies.

The concept of religion is a fundamental concept of religiological sciences. Still it is not devoid of difficulties. Its critics attempt to prove that plurality and variety of religious phenomena excludes the possibility to define religion. On the other hand the lack of the general concept of religion constitutes a serious problem for theology of religion since it is difficult to study relationships between Christianity and other religions not knowing what religion is and what its theological essence is. The present article consists of three parts. The first part analyses the history of the concept of religion (Latin religio). Second part considers the problem of the definition of religion. Third one presents some of contemporary attempts to specify the theological concept of religion. Finally the last part shows the significance of the concept of religion for theology of religion.
Pojęcie religii jest podstawowym pojęciem nauk religiologicznych. Jego rozumienie nie jest jednak pozbawione trudności. Krytycy starają się wykazać, iż wielość i różnorodność zjawisk religijnych wyklucza możliwość zdefiniowania religii. Z drugiej strony brak ogólnego pojęcia religii stanowi poważny problem dla teologii religii. Trudno bowiem badać relacje między chrześcijaństwem a innymi religiami, nie wiedząc, czym religia jest i na czym polega jej teologiczna istota. Niniejszy artykuł składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza analizuje historię pojęcia religii (łac. religio). W części drugiej rozważono problem definicji religii. Część trzecia prezentuje niektóre współczesne próby sprecyzowania teologicznego pojęcia religii. W części ostatniej ukazano ponadto znaczenie pojęcia religii dla teologii religii.

Religious crises are a kind of psychological crises associated with the process of personality development. Authors dealing with religious crisis, in place of this term often applies the concept of conversion or doubt. The term is ambiguous and there is not finally define. Different authors to the religious crisis approach in two ways: Some are discussing this phenomenon more structurally, others describe them more in the context of development. The most comprehensive description of conversion we find on William James. As a scientist dealing with religion, James believed, that you can supernatural made make it more clear and you can try to interpret it psychologically. Given the different understanding of the religious crisis show multiple attempts to describe this phenomenon. All authors we see common elements like: a gradual or sudden, perceptible change in the religious life of the unit, annoying State of emotional tension and doubts in the field of religion. Crisis can end up positively, It means the unit enters the taller, darker level of faith, or can end up adversely, It means the person will go away from the faith completely or become agnostic.

Opis:
The cultural spread of religious representations is determined by both cognitive and non-cognitive determinants. While the cognitive determinants have been studied by the cognitive science of religious, much less attention is given to such determinants of religious thought as language, especially written language, and material artefacts. This article focuses on the role of material artefacts in the creation, cultural transmission, cognitive processing and stabilizing of religious representations. It points out to such functions of material artefacts as the extension of memory, externalization of mental representations, anchoring conceptual structures and strengthening the sense of reality of culturally postulated supernatural beings and phenomena.

Religion teachers play a unique role in educating the young generation. In addition to the tasks assigned to all teachers in general, they are to support students in their spiritual development, conditioning their ability to understand themselves, build their own identity, and give meaning to their lives. Catechists face a difficult task, because young people, although they are very interested in religion and spirituality, also have many doubts, questions, and dilemmas in this sphere. The article aims to present the expectations of high school students towards catechists related to their personality traits, skills, psychosocial competencies, and their approach to pupils. Data obtained in a survey conducted with a group of 70 high school graduates show that young people need a catechist whom they can trust in the most important matter, which is the meaning of human life. Thus, they expect catechists to give a credible testimony of faith, have good substantive preparation, treat them subjectively like partners, and are ready to undertake an open dialogue with them.

The article addresses the problem of perceiving and experiencing one’s body within the yoga practice. The process of becoming a yogi is related to the practices of the body and to further defining them; next, to the defined perception of the body and its sensations. Becoming a hatha-yoga practitioner is a specific process. In this paper I describe its phases: 1. The introductory phase – constructing the motives and first steps; 2. Phase of the deeper recognition of psycho-physical effects of yoga practice and of attributing them with adequate meanings; 3. Phase of the deeper recognition of hatha-yoga spiritual aspects (quasi-religion). At the moment of significant involvement in hatha-yoga practice and defining corporeal practices in terms of being bodily and mental at the same time, the mind – body rapport compound. The work over the body may transform the Western perspective of defining the body as a substantial element of human existence (Cartesian vision) into treating it as a spiritualized matter (vision of Eastern philosophy). If, however, the tenets of other religions are maintained as one’s own (e.g., catholic religion), the transformation at hand will not proceed. In that case, in order to reconcile the conventional religion tenets with new spiritual experiences, changes in body and mind need to be defined in any other way, and a specific linguistic explanations of these changes (often adopting the scheme of constant linguistic formulas) need to occur.

This paper depicts my conception of the philosophy of religion. I think that there nothing like religion in general. The world of what is customarily called religion is a very different and analogous reality. I make Catholic Christianity the starting point of this philosophy of religion. I treat it as the main analogy to the world of religion. The objective aim of the philosophy of religion is threefold:1) description of religion,2) justification of religion,3) epistemology of religious beliefs. In the philosophy of religion understood in this manner I use methods proper to general metaphysics, philosophical anthropology, and theory of knowledge.

What are we talking about when we talk about universal religion? The purpose of this article is to present a preliminary methodological, typological and historical outline (focusing particularly on modern France modern France), which facilitates answering this question. If we accept the meaning given to religion by modernity (which defines it by a form of worship, doctrine, morality and community), we conclude that the idea of a universal religion, as having numerous historical variants, fulfills its criteria in various ways. At the same time, however, it transcends positive religions, and its critical-investigative attitude towards them are even the necessary conditions of possibility of its emergence. The idea of universal religion can remain at the level of purely intentional solution or project (as in the case of modern natural religion, which is the common denominator of all religions, based on the so-called Credo minimum), it can also although this is rare, adopt a specific social character (as in the case of cults created during the French Revolution). The idea of a universal religion can also be associated with one of the historical religions. In the Western world and its Judeo-Christian context, it would generally be Catholicism.

Religion is an integral part of the human culture. Depending on philosophical, outlook, theological concepts, there are many of its definitions. The interest of psychology is concentrated on subjective understanding of religion and religiousness. The article analyzes the issues mentioned above from humanistic and existential’s achievements perspective. Distinguishing of religiousness described as an attitude and as a relationship reveals different aspects of its functioning in human personality. A religion`s influence on personality depends on a kind of religiousness and a place, which are given to the human structure. Religiousness provides human`s life with meaning, values, sense of security, identifies with society and plays therapeutic functions. Pointing these functions out shows a positive role that is played by religiousness in every man’s life.

The article presents the history of theological and religious research conducted by the Institute of Fundamental Theology, Faculty of Theology at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. In particular, it highlights the contribution of the Institute’s employees to contemporary theological and religious research questions as well as presents their publication output. Their main research achievements include: the innovative association of the concept of religion and its theologically understood truthfulness with its genesis (the theory of the revelatory origin of religion); the original concept of theology of religion as an interdiscipline; the possibility to justify the plurality of religion de iure while maintaining the unique status of Christianity among the world religions; the close relationship between the theology of religion and fundamental theology in justifying this uniqueness, especially in discussions with representatives of the pluralist-relativistic theology of religion.

Factors such as different cultural determinants undoubtedly affect “the shape” of the economy. Mueller, Hofstede and Gray, among others, have studied the impact of the cultural factors on an economy, especially in fields such as accounting. Reflections on the topic have also appeared in the Polish literature, although relatively late. One of the cultural factors is, beyond doubt, religion, forming some ethical attitudes through the transfer of certain values which become the guiding principles for individual actions, exerting an obvious influence on the applicable standards in a given society. The author does not claim to consider the relations between religion and ethics, as only issues concerning a possible to demonstrate influence of religious norms on accounting are raised in the article. The aim is to discuss briefly the impact of Christianity, Islam and Confucianism on accounting systems and practices based on literature studies. In conclusion, the question arises about the sense of the convergence of accounting standards, at least in the context of the current efforts undertaken in this field.

The article herein is based on empirical studies and presents the high school graduates’ attitude towards chosen moral standards. The author raises a questions regarding moral transformations amongs young people in Poland on the basis of the thus far presented research results in the young people environment. Analyzed research resluts are presented in the context of faith autodeclaration, confession belongingness as well as respondents’ sex. Analyses have shown that young people are seraching for personal references and legitimization of their behaviour, increasingly rarely motivated by religion. It was stated that there is no coherence between religion and morality which is most apparent on a personal level, and mostly evidenced on the sexual life field. Young people’s attitudes are characterized by the moral relativism. In the context of presented data we can speak about the morality deconsecration as well as the looseness of religion connections.

The article is dedicated to the issue of magic and religion in the social reality of capitalism. The goal of the article is to present  examples proving that capitalism in various places (post-communist Central Europe, San Cristobal in the Mexican state of Chiapas, Colombian department Valle del Cauca, New York) and at various times (from the 1970s to the second decade of the 21st century) was associated with elements of religion and magic through social thinking and practice, and therefore elements of social reality. On the other hand, in the discourse, capitalism is often presented as a part of nature: the existence that acts objectively, like the laws of physics. In the article, this apparent contradiction is presented as a dialectical aspect of the present day, in which the discourse and social reality are complementary.

Wenn Rudolf Pannwitz (1881‒1969) Philosophie, Wissenschaft und Kunst als „kentaurische[s] Geschöpf “, d.h. als untrennbar betrachtete, so fragt es sich, wo die Religion in seinem Denken zu verorten ist bzw. wie sie sich in seinem Verständnis zur Philosophie und Kunst verhält. Seine Auffassung über Religion bzw. ihre (mytho)poetische Realisierung werden im Folgenden in Anbetracht einiger seiner Essays und Dichtungen behandelt. Als Dichterphilosoph hat Pannwitz ein komplexes, wenn auch (unverdienterweise) selten behandeltes philosophisches und dichterisches Oeuvre hinterlassen, dessen Korrelationen miteinander bzw. Relationen zu seinem Konzept einer kosmischen Religion im Beitrag nachgegangen werden.
One of the major ideas of the German poet and philosopher Rudolf Pannwitz consists in treating philosophy, science and art as “one creature”, i.e. they should not be treated separately. Thus the questions are raised of where to place religion in Pannwitz’s thinking and how it refers to philosophy and art. His understanding of religion or its mytho-poetic realization have been discussed on the grounds of a few of his essays and poems. As a poet -philosopher Pannwitz left a rarely discussed which has been dealt with in the article. The author has also pointed out how it refers to Pannwitz’s cosmological concept of religion.

The article is an attempt to analyze the relation between religion and politics in the American culture of last few decades. Liberals of western civilization very often look on the religion as an anachronism – something connected with a  personal wishful thinking or with the prayers of monks closed in a  congregationrather than with the modern political life. But the religion is an important component of the present‑day culture in America. A  good example of this is the modern use of prayer as a  form of political action. The research concentrates on two different forms of religious prayer – ‘the civil prayer’ and ‘the imprecatory prayer’. As we will see, these two forms of confessional practice differ in almost everything, but they share a  common political context.

The paper deals with actual problem of current stage of religious sphere’s development – the emergence and vigorous activity of movements and organizations that can be characterized as quasi-religious. We research the characteristics of quasi-religions as the separate phenomena that operate mainly in the form of secular organizations and that try to transform the identity of its members in their desired direction. It is emphasized that the concepts of quasi-religious and pseudo-religious beliefs are not identical and require of separate religious studies research. But it can be considered that common to both phenomena is only their arising at the boundaries between sacred and secular. The paper presents a review of quasi-religious concepts – from Tillich to Greil, as well as a description of quasi-religious practices and quasi-religious movements.

Opis:
Source literature lists several versions of creationism as well as numerous manners of understand- ing evolutionism. Creationist views may be limited to four basic ones: fundamentalist creationism, creation science, intelligent design and evolutionary creationism. In my article I will justify which of these versions of creationism may be considered as dialoguing with science, and which of them turn out, to a greater or lesser degree, unable to enter into this dialogue. I will answer the question how creationism should be understood in order for it to be able to engage in a debate with modern science. In other words, the central question of this article will be: how is the dialogue between religion (creationism) and science (evolutionism) feasible?

Jeśli metafizyka jest filozofią pierwszą, której celem jest ostateczne wyjaśnienie rze-czywistości, to jest ona przydatna tylko takiej religii, która uznaje swój przekaz za prawdzi-wy. Chrześcijaństwo jest taką religią, bo nie zadowala się tylko uzasadnieniem jakiejś formy obyczaju, ale chce swój przekaz odnieść do prawdy, chce być religią prawdziwą. Stąd dyskurs teologii chrześcijańskiej dokonywał się w dyskusji z metafizycznym roszczeniem do prawdy. Arystoteles określił metafizykę trojako: jako mądrość (poznanie inne niż fizyczne i matematyczne), jako teoria tego co wolne od materialnych ograniczeń (poznanie pierwszych zasad) oraz jako filozofia bytu, jako bytu (poznanie najgłębszej struktury rzeczywistości). Na tych trzech płaszczyznach dokonuje się jej dialog z religią prawdziwą.
If metaphysics is the first philosophy, the ultimate aim of which is the clarification of reality, it is only useful for a religion that recognizes its message as true. Christianity is such a religion because it does not satisfy itself with justification for some form of custom, culture but wants its message to be true, it wants to be a true religion. Hence, the discourse of Christian theology was held in a discussion with the metaphysical claim to truth. Aristotle defined metaphysics as a triple: as wisdom (cognition other than physical and ma-thematical), as a theory of what is free from material limitations (knowledge of the first prin-ciples) and as a philosophy of being as being (learning the deepest structure of reality). On these three levels, a dialogue is made with the true religion.

The philosophy of Tanabe, the successor of Kitarō Nishida, is also explained by the principle of nothingness and love. Tanabe has succeeded in «the logic of nothingness». From my point of view, this nothingness is nothingness as negative and dead speech. Tanabe aims to reach the truth by making full use of the dialectic of the negative word. This negative word means that non-thing is nothingness. We can therefore say that Tanabe’s dialectic develops the dialectic of nothingness. Ta- nabe himself named it as an absolute dialectic that transcends Hegel’s idealist dialectic and Marx’s materialist dialectic. Even more, he understands the world as a dialectical movement. This idea over- laps with the dynamic development and movement of Aristotle. The development of dialectical logic reached its peak with Tanabe’s philosophy in the history of philosophy. But in the meantime, he criti- cized Nishida’s theory of pure experience as a viewer’s theory. At a glance, this means that Tanabe is denying «nothingness as reality» which is the flow of life and energy in the universe. It is the original energy of creation from nothing and can explain the energy of the expanding universe, dark matter and dark energy. As Tanabe denies this energy, he shows the weakness of his theory. He did not speak about the creation of the universe, because it is mysterious. He can develop his theory of time, but he cannot explain cosmology which includes the theory of energy. In his last years, the theory of the ex- pansion of the universe is already published by Edwin Hubble. Tanabe’s interest shifted from physics to philosophy. Most researchers cannot indicate this point. Therefore, Tanabe’s interpretation is not stable. It seems to fit the theory of religion where love is at the heart of religion. On the theory of religion, the essence of the transcendent being is not clear.

In beiden Medien strebt Meidner eine Transgression zwischen dem Immanenten und Transzendenten an. Der Beitrag untersucht die Religiosität Meidners vor dem Hintergrund der expressionistischen Bewegung und die intermedialen Relationen zwischen Zeichnungen und Texten in den Anthologien „Septemberschrei“ und „Im Nacken das Sternemeer“.
Ludwig Meidner (1884‒1966) is one of the doubly-gifted artists in the realm of German expressionism, he is known as a painter as well as a writer. In both media Meidner transgresses the border between the immanent and the transcendent, his religiosity being strongly involved with expressionistic ideas such as the intertwining of art and religion. The article focusses on the interaction of Meidner’s drawings and texts in his anthologies „September Cry“ and „Behind my Head the Sea of Stars“.

The paper aims to argue that the di erent forms of ‘academic study of religion’ in the West hardly have core characteristics on which there is a consensus of scholars. Moreover, it may not be the only way of doing Academic Study of Religion. In Indian tradition, in its own way there have been religious studies. Religion is a way of living. The presence of a large diverse religious population constitutes myriad human exemplars of and witnesses to what it means to be religious and to act religiously. It furnishes a diversity of backgrounds, sensitivities and language competences on the part of Indians who choose to be trained as scholars in the eld. Typically for an Indian, ‘living religion’ is more important than studying, describing, or know‐ ing religion. One does not have the time or money for such ‘luxuries’; religion is a ‘bracketed existence’ in normal circumstances, but in crises it is the basic or fundamental identity of an individual. Further, in the Indian context only the serious academic study ‘comparative reli‐ gion’ has relevance, and this brings an interesting methodology to the study. Contemporary attempts and distinctive contributions on comparative methodology of study of religion would be discussed as well as how far its application in the Asian context would be possible. The paper concludes by answering what it means to do ‘comparative religion’ of an authentic sort among diverse pressures, expectations, challenges and opportunities.

The article deals with the theological issues of Homer and Heraclitus. The analysis of the works of Homer and the philosophical thought of Heraclitus serves to compare and contrast them extracting significant differences regarding the image of god and man. The author develops both literary and philosophical understanding of gods. She compares the man-god relationship in early Greek literature and philosophy. There is an interesting intrinsic tension in the literary tropes that can only be understood if the religious function of this literature is taken into account. The author tries to describe the vision of the world and the place of human beings in it in both sources: literature and philosophy. In philosophical writings, there can be seen a movement in the vision of the world structure: the gods become more inaccessible to humans, but humans gain the opportunity to become godlier if they follow a proper set of thoughts and actions proposed by philosophy. Religious poets were speaking of the past when the gods were approachable to people. Their fantasies were often mixed with old beliefs so that the divine-human world has as much wonder and eccentricity as dread. Philosophy conquers not only minds but also hearts, to convey them towards the ideal, bearing in mind the unattainable model of a virtuous man. While religion describes gods similar to humans, philosophy forges a new god-resemblant human figure.
Artykuł dotyczy zagadnień teologicznych u Homera i Heraklita. Analiza dzieł Homera i myśli filozoficznej Heraklita służy ich porównaniu i zestawieniu, wydobywając istotne różnice dotyczące obrazu boga i człowieka. Autorka rozwija zarówno literackie, jak i filozoficzne rozumienie bogów. Porównuje relację człowiek–bóg we wczesnej greckiej literaturze i filozofii. Istnieje interesujące wewnętrzne napięcie w poszukiwaniach literackich, które można zrozumieć tylko wtedy, gdy weźmie się pod uwagę religijną funkcję tej literatury. Autorka stara się opisać wizję świata i miejsce w nim człowieka w obu źródłach: literaturze i filozofii. W pismach filozoficznych można dostrzec ruch w wizji struktury świata: bogowie stają się bardziej niedostępni dla ludzi, ale ludzie zyskują możliwość stania się bardziej boskimi, jeśli podążają za odpowiednim zestawem myśli i działań proponowanych przez filozofię. Religijni poeci mówili o przeszłości, kiedy bogowie byli dostępni dla ludzi. Ich fantazje często mieszały się ze starymi wierzeniami, dzięki czemu świat bosko-ludzki jest równie cudowny i ekscentryczny, co przerażający. Filozofia podbija nie tylko umysły, ale i serca, by skierować je ku ideałowi, pamiętając o nieosiągalnym wzorcu cnotliwego człowieka. Podczas gdy religia opisuje bogów podobnych do ludzi, filozofia tworzy nową postać człowieka przypominającą boga.

The natural religion was of great importance and popular with thinkers, philosophers and writers in the 18th century. According to the message of this idea a religion was treated in moral terms and it was believed that there are moral rules common among all people, and God is a Moral Lawgiver or a symbol of sanctity of these rules. In spite of the fact that the notion of natural religion does not exist today its forms can still be found in European awareness. But as the most important heritage of the 18th century idea of natural religion can be regarded nowadays our Western belief in human rights and their universality. In our value system these rights are supreme and „sacred”. It can be said that they are our new religion modeled on the natural religion and as its continuity.

The relationships between Kant’s philosophy and Protestantism are still the subject of studies and new findings. Contemporarily, the univocal and enthusiastic identification of Kantian philosophy with Lutheran anthro¬pology and eschatology, typical for nineteenth-century historians, has been evaluated much more critically. Paulsen’s claim that Kant was a “philosopher of Protestantism” is not received without reservation. Some analogies with the foundations of Luther’s reform can be recognised in Kant’s polemic with religious metaphysics. However, Kant’s philosophy of religion seems to be a kind of continuation of the reformation spirit in the field of philosophy, but not only a legitimisation of the religious reform which in the 18th century were already fossilised and out of date.

Janusz Mariański, polski socjolog religii, prowadzi badania w odniesieniu do religijności i katolicyzmu polskiego. Włoski socjolog religii, Roberto Cipriani, czyni to w odniesieniu do religijności, formułując koncepcję tzw. religione diffusa. Obaj badacze ustosunkowują się do rzekomego (lub rzeczywistego) kryzysu religijności. Niniejszy tekst przedstawia myśl J. Mariańskiego, ukierunkowaną na wątek kryzysu religijności, oraz syntetyzuje koncepcję R. Ciprianiego w odniesieniu do owego kryzysu. Wspomniani badacze są znaczącymi postaciami nauki – odpowiednio – polskiej i włoskiej. Wskazanie na zbieżności i różnice badawcze, które występują pomiędzy tymi naukowcami w realizowanych przez nich dyskursach socjologicznych, wydaje się uzasadnione w przypadku próby ujęcia porównawczego.
Janusz Mariański, Polish sociologist of religion, carries out research in relation to Polish religion and Catholicism. Italian sociologist of religion, Roberto Cipriani, does so in relation to religion, formulating the concept of the so-called religione diffusa. Both researchers relate to the alleged (or real) religious crisis. The text presents J. Mariański’s ideas oriented on the topic of the religious crisis and synthesizes R. Cipriani’s concept in relation to this crisis. The researchers mentioned above are significant figures of science – respectively – Polish and Italian. Indicating convergence of research and the differences that exist between these scientists in the sociological research they conduct seems reasonable when attempting a comparative approach.

Introductorily, it should be observed that the discussed problem’s significance is increasingly pressing as our interest drifts towards societies dominated by great, universalizing religions Islam being only one of them. From the above, a question arises of whether the notions of religion and democracy, as mentioned in the title, are reconcilable within a single order in the first place. In his deliberations, Bohdan Chwedeńczyk inclines to the view that three types of relations may be distinguished in this respect: religion favours democracy; is indifferent to democracy; or is harmful to democracy. The discussion of the above opinion has, respectively, developed threefold. In one point of view, religion is by nature contradictory to the democratic order, it is in a sense its direct opposite. In other words, we face a choice of opting either for religion or democracy. Supporters of an alternative viewpoint claim that in the long run, a democratic system is not viable without the basis of notions such as religion, and therefore religion does play a vital part in the social order. It serves members of the public by satisfying those of their needs that do not belong to the scope of duties performed by the state and its institutions. Finally, the third approach basically acknowledges the fact that no definitive claims can be made as to the possibility of agreement between religion and democracy. I must admit that the latter is closest to my personal stance in this respect. Naturally, through careful selection of examples, arguments to support the first or the second of the mentioned opinions can be easily produced. There have been numerous examples of academic and journalistic articles advocating one of the clear-cut standpoints, which seem not to leave much room for discussion. However, the issue becomes far more multifarious when taking into account the complexity of religious and political issues analysed in both theoretical and practical perspective.

Nowadays, Polish Orthodox Church has the uniform oranizational and legal structure, transparent institutional dimension, its own specific character and tradition. It has also shaped an objective religious culture which for hundreds of years has been an integral part of the culture in Poland. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the broad dimension of the social and religious conditions of Polish Orthodox Church in the perspective of Polish society. On the basis of gathered research material it has been shown that the Polish Orthodox Church is characterized by a relatively strong differentiation, which often results in inconsistency of its image, as well as dim knowledge of the Orthodox society causes stereotypical and biased perception of the Orthodox Church and its members.

The discussion about nation and ideas connected with it has a long tradition, tremendously multithreaded and varied in interpretations. We are practically unable of counting all attempts to create the definition of a nation. They are all more or less precise, for understandable reasons reflects their author's social and cultural experiences, reaching for specific metaphors, and sometimes being a form of intellectual provocation. A conception of a nation is strongly tied to the category of minority, especially the ethnic minority. Both those definitions are often used in turns. A very interesting issue is analyzing the connections between nationalism and religion.

Works by Gertrud von le Fort belong with literary religious discourse and enter a debate between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.The writer sets her plots in the past, most frequently in the Middle Ages, which enables her to offer a critical assessment of contemporary political, ethical and religious issues.The article presents various connections between literature and religion, in terms of both motifs and style. References to religion are found in the thematic, axiological and linguistic layers of her texts. The analysed works comprise the novellas Der Dom (The Cathedral) and Am Tor des Himmels (At the Heavenly Gate) as well as the novel Magdeburgische Hochzeit (The Magdeburg Wedding). These works also reflect the phenomenon of the so-called cultural Christianity. Le Fort’s characters are not indifferent to the religious system, even if they do not fully identify with it.

The discourse on tolerance began over two centuries ago and yet is still unfinished. Was Voltaire in 1763 with his “Treatise on Tolerance”, condemned religious intolerance persuaded by religious fanaticism of the judgment of the Court of Toulouse. Although the idea of tolerance was born in Europe, it saw and still sees intolerance. Intolerance of yesterday reminds us wars, inquisitions and crusades, instead the modern Europe shows that even between globalization and multiculturalism often proves incapable of “import” different cultures. But from the legal point of view the term tolerance is far from that of secularism. It follows that individuals in a system that tolerates doesn’t enjoy equality their fundamental rights, because they are not legally placed on the same level. Legal Italian tolerance experience has been for many years a condition for the cults other than Catholic. The Albertine Statute in 1848 welcomed it in the article 1, and it was the task of the new Constitution outlining the principles of a State not only secular but also pluralistic.

Celem artykułu jest próba sformułowania odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy konsumpcjonizm jest nową religią współczesnego człowieka, rozumianą w ujęciu socjologicznym. Po wstępnych rozważaniach teoretycznych dotyczących konsumpcjonizmu omówiono socjologiczne definicje religii (przedmiotowe i funkcjonalne) oraz przejawy konsumpcjonizmu, pozwalające traktować go jako nową religię. Szczegółowej analizie poddano przedmioty czci religijnej we współczesnej kulturze konsumpcyjnej (określone marki, towary, miejsca, usługi oraz związane z nimi doznania i przyjemności), sposoby świętowania i nowe święta, funkcje religijne realizowane przez konsumpcjonizm, obowiązujące w nim dogmaty-mity, przekonania oraz zachowania konsumentów (rytuały i ceremonie) w nowej religii. Całość zakończono podsumowaniem W artykule zastosowano metodę analityczno-syntetyczną. Przyjęta w procesie badawczym teza: konsumpcjonizm jest nową religią współczesnego człowieka, została obalona.
The aim of the article was an attempt to form a reply to the question: is consumerism a new religion of contemporary man, understood in its sociological formulation? After initial terminological considerations (consumerism), sociological definitions of religion were discussed (objective and functional) as well as the symptoms of consumerism allowing it to be treated as a new religion. Objects of religious cult in contemporary consumerist culture were analyzed (trademarks, goods, places, services as well as sensations and pleasures associated with these), ways of celebrating and new feasts, significant persons (idols), religious functions achieved by consumerism, its compulsory dogmas-myths, convictions, as well as the behaviour of consumers (rituals and ceremonies) in the new religion. The whole was concluded with a summary. The analytic-synthetic method was applied in the article. The thesis accepted in the research process: consumerism is a new religion of contemporary man, was refuted.

In the article the author presents the dialogical model of religious education and its didactical implications as well as analyses the roles of this model in the process of students’ religious identity development, creating their relations with other sacrum representatives and developing their ability to dialogue. In the second part of the text the outcomes of the research concerning German school religion course books treating them as the examples of the model mentioned above. The empirical analysis enabled to point at positive potential of the course books as the tools of creating the attitude of openness towards other religions and their disciples among students as well as taking responsibility for the creation of their own religious identity.
Odnosząc się do roli i miejsca edukacji religijnej w obszarze kształcenia i wychowania do życia we współczesnym świecie (wyzwania i trudności wynikające z podejmowania przez szkołę tego zadania opisane zostaną poniżej), wskazać można na jej ogromny potencjał. Dla odpowiedzi na pytanie o możliwości urzeczywistnienia tego potencjału istotna staje się kwestia koncepcji edukacji religijnej. As a part of the series on female deities and demons in the Indo-European culture, the article begins by establishing Helen’s divine character in the Greek tradition and religion. The first area where the Indo-European character of Helen is displayed concerns the etymology of her name, which has been the subject of discussion and controversy throughout several decades. The most prominent theories are presented, including the concept of Pokorny and West to explain her name as ‘Lady of Light’ from the Proto-Indo-European root *swel- or *swelh1-, the idea of Skutsch to connect Helen with Vedic Saṛanyū, the etymology by Clader relying on the local Greek ritual practices and finally the new etymology provided by Pinault explaining the name as ‘having a year like a thread’ from Proto-Indo-European *suh1-l̥-h1eno. The second part of the article deals with the cultural, literary and religious attributes of Helen which connect her with the Indo-European world, especially with the Vedic tradition. The most interesting aspects include the issue of Helen’s parenthood and her birth, her relationship with her brothers – the Dioskouroi – the prototypical Indo-European Divine Twins, as well as similarities with Vedic goddesses Uṣās – Dawn and Sūryā́ – the Sun Princess. The final part of the article establishes Helen as the Greek representation of the Indo-European myth of an abducted wife. Relying heavily on the analysis of Jamison, it draws on the similarities between the passages in the book III of the Mahābhārata and the book III of the Iliad, which from the comparative perspective explains well the inclusion of this scene in the Homeric epic and Helen’s role in it as well as sheds more light on the Indo-European practices regarding marriage. Lastly, the article mentions a connection between Helen and Vedic Saṛanyū by the story of eidolon – a phantom, which both characters created at certains points in some literary traditions.

The paper examines diverse theoretical standpoints on issues related to the interpretation of contemporary religiosity. A distinction is made between, on the one hand, authors who acknowledge as indisputable the secular, non-religious nature of the contemporary times and, on the other hand, authors and ideas that consider the contemporary world as totally religious; between interpretations of the existential horizon of religion as providing a unique and irreplaceable transcendental meaning and support to the mortal individual, as opposed to those viewing religion as a transient cultural condition in the course of the maturing and autonomous self-assertion of the individual and society. These general theoretical and value-based interpretations, developed in particular by the philosophy and sociology of religion, are taken up here in order to understand the dynamic processes developing in the modern/postmodern religious situation, registered by sociological research and fieldwork or observed in various regional phenomena. The emptying of religion of its social ‘infrastructure’ role – the global framework of the social body – shifts the ‘point of application’ of religion from the social to the individual level, to human subjectivity. The methodological turn from the group and community to the individual is analyzed as both culturally justified and very limited. This investigation tries to clarify the issue: is ‘subjective’ religion an ‘anthropological residue’ doomed to depletion, or an essential element of ‘revived’ religion?

The renewal of Christian literature was a vividly discussed and controversial phenomenon in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. The aim of this paper is to present the role of the Catholic priests-writers Heinrich Federer (1866‒1928), Peter Dörfler (1878‒1955) and Joseph Wittig (1879‒1949) in this dispute on “Catholic modernism“ in literature. Literary and cultural development of these writers, as well as the processes of forming their literary profile will be analysed.

In this short article we will try to discuss a very peculiar phenomenon of the Japanese religious scene that can be identified throughout the history, showing similar characteristics in completely different religious settings. This phenomenon we should call non-institutional religious practices, non-organized individual religious practices or private religion. Due to a very specific character of Japanese religiousness, free individual religious quest have become an important part of Japanese religious life. After describing some factors that contributed to the emergence of religious tolerance and sincerity, we shall discuss instances of non-institutional individual practices of Shugendō, Komusō and the notion of non-church Christianity proposed by Kanzō Uchimura, thus building an image of Japanese religiousness not from the standpoint of historical development of religious organizations and their teachings, but from the point of view of an individual practitioner, giving the individual an opportunity and his or her intrinsic right not to depend on organized religions, but to freely follow their own religious pursuits.

When the Ombudsman Office (RPO) was established in 1987 and it was decreed to strengthen socialist rule of law and protect the rights and freedoms of citizens enshrined in the Constitution and other legal acts, Poland for years has been a part of international pacts guaranteeing civil rights including freedom of conscience and religion. The declarative nature of international obligations, as well as actual restrictions on citizens' rights, have effectively neutralized the activities of the Ombudsman appointed to monitor, disclose and prevent human rights violations. After 1989, when Poland, leaving the communist block, decided to join democratic states, the position of Ombudsman strengthened. His competences were expanded, the Office gained constitutional rank, and was able to carry out its mission more effectively in new political circumstances. This article is devoted to the Ombudsman's statements on matters of freedom of religion. Recapitulation of RPO activity in this area is important and current. The issue of the primacy of human rights and freedoms, including the religious freedoms of the individual marking the limit of state law, as in the early 1990s, is now the subject of political and ideological disputes - also about the ideological shape of the Ombudsman Office and the sense of its presence on the public scene.

Resulta sorprendente que en pleno siglo XXI una persona no pueda tomar decisiones sobre su propio cuerpo simplemente a causa de su género. Pues bien, esta es una realidad que hoy en día siguen viviendo muchas mujeres latinoamericanas, quienes ven limitada su autonomía y libertad por los hombres de su entorno. El acceso a los sistemas de salud, la toma de decisiones sobre su labor reproductiva o incluso la posibilidad de recibir información sobre su sexualidad, son algunos de los puntos que en varias regiones latinoamericanas se ven coartadas a causa de tradiciones, costumbres o una falta de participación económica de la mujer. El pre-sente artículo, tiene el objetivo de hacer una reflexión sobre la relación y posibles reminiscencias que la negación histórica al cuerpo femenino pudiera contribuir en la actual brecha de género en Latinoamérica.
It is surprising that in the 21st century a person cannot make decisions about their own body simply because of their gender. Well, this is a reality that many Latin American women continue to live with today, who see limited autonomy and freedom from the men of their environment. Access to health systems, decision-making about their reproductive work or even the possibility of receiving information about their sexuality are some of the points that in some Latin American regions are restricted because of traditions, customs or a lack of economic participation of women. This article reflects on the relationship and possible reminiscences that the historical negation of the female body could contribute to the current gender gap in Latin America.

There are many different approaches to the problem of the relation between science and religion. It is often claimed that there exists a conflict between those two domains. However, S. J. Gould cannot see neither how the two enterprises can stay in any conflict nor how they can be reconciled or unified. He developed a concept of two Non-Overlapping Magisteria (NOMA). Gould claims that science and religion are characterized by completely different areas of investigation. The two magisteria ask different questions and provide different explanations. Science investigates the factual character of the natural world while religion explores the world of values, meanings and purposes of human life. One could say that this is a reasonable point of view, but at a closer glance it does not seem to be a satisfactory solution.

Cel: w artykule wskazano i omówiono wybrane problemy religijne w kontekście postępujących procesów mediatyzacji w erze globalizacji, tj. eliminację sacrum ze sfery indywidualnej i społecznej, podważenie korespondencyjnej definicji prawdy jako podstawy w wyjaśnianiu doktrynalnych kwestii religii, zmianę rozumienia kluczowych determinantów życia religijnego. Podjęto również refleksję nad wpływem nowego kontekstu neoglobalizacji na dalszy proces mediatyzacji religii, wskazując możliwe kierunki zachodzących zmian. Metodologia: w pracy posłużono się metodą analizy, metodą krytyki piśmiennictwa i metodą przeglądu literatury. Wyniki i wnioski: procesy globalizacji i neoglobalizacji są katalizatorem przemian w obszarze życia religijnego, które traci swój wspólnotowy charakter na rzecz jednostkowego, zindywidualizowanego odniesienia do Boga, w znaczącej mierze dzięki kulturze postmodernizmu i postprawdy. Media, będąc częścią profanum i spełniając swoje funkcje w epoce globalizacji i neoglobalizacji, odgrywają istotną rolę w prezentowaniu opinii publicznej własnej interpretacji rozumienia doktrynalnych podstaw religii oraz determinantów życia religijnego. Epoka neoglobalizacji przynosi stopniowe przeorientowanie procesów kulturowych w stronę respektowania praw człowieka i dowartościowania państw narodowych, co otwiera możliwość zacieśnienia wzajemnych odniesień państwa i religii, np. rezygnacji z zasady autonomii państwa i kościoła/związku wyznaniowego na rzecz przyjęcia modelu państwa teokratycznego lub instrumentalizacji spraw wiary bądź jej eliminacji ze sfery publicznej. Wartość poznawcza: publikacja systematyzuje wyniki badań w obszarze mediatyzacji religii w kontekście procesów globalizacji. Wskazano możliwe kierunku zmian w procesie mediatyzacji doktrynalnych podstaw religii oraz determinantów życia religijnego w epoce neoglobalizacji. Uwzględniono myśl badawczą m.in. takich przedstawicieli nauk społecznych jak N. González Gaitano, D. Guzek, A. Hepp, S. Hjarvard, S. Hoover, S. Livingstone, M. Lövheim, K. Lundby, B. Meyer, W. Schulz, K. Stępniak.
Scientific objective: The paper indicates and discusses selected religious problems in the context of ongoing mediatization processes in the era of globalization, i.e., the elimination of sacrum from the individual and social sphere, questioning the correspondence definition of truth as the basis for explaining the doctrinal issues of religion, changing the understanding of key determinants of religious life. Reflection was also undertaken on the impact of the new context of neo-globalization on the further process of mediatization of religion, indicating possible directions of changes taking place. Research methods: The study uses the method of analysis, the method of literary criticism, and the method of literature review. Results and conclusions: The processes of globalization and neo-globalization are a catalyst for changes in the area of religious life, which loses its communal character in favor of an individualized reference to God, largely due to the culture of postmodernism and post-truth. The media, being part of profanum and fulfilling their functions in the era of globalization and neo-globalization, play an important role in presenting to the public opinion their own interpretation of the understanding of the doctrinal foundations of religion and the determinants of religious life. The era of neo-globalization brings a gradual reorientation of cultural processes towards respecting human rights and valuing nation-states, which opens up the possibility of tightening mutual relations between the state and religion, e.g., abandoning the principle of autonomy of the state and church/religious association in favor of adopting the model of a theocratic state or instrumentalization of matters of faith or its elimination from the public sphere. Originality and cognitive value: The paper systematizes the results of research in the field of mediatization of religion in the context of globalization processes. The study indicates possible directions of changes in the process of mediatization of the doctrinal foundations of religion and the determinants of religious life in the era of neo-globalization. This article proposed a structure of geography of religion : confessional geography, sacred geography, geography of pilgrimage. This structure considers three elements: 1 ) the spatial situation of religious life in Ukraine and defined regional denominational  structure ; 2 ) the geography of the sacred center The meaning of religious centers in religious life are divided into levels : national, regional, local ; and 3 ) the geography of pilgrimage – for different denominations within Ukraine, abroad from Ukraine, from abroad into the country. The general trends in the geography of religion, created in the early 21st century: 1 ) revitalization of the Moscow Patriarchate with the active support of the Russian Orthodox Church and the public authorities. This is evident in the increasing number of religious communities and the active construction of churches; 2 ) increases the number of Protestants and charismatic churches of believers; 3 ) the strengthened position of Greek Catholics; 4 ) a “return ” of some Ukrainians to ancient religious roots, promoting actually paganism (Native Ukrainian National Faith), rituals of which are reconstructed.

This article critically analyses European jurisprudence to ascertain the extent to which the right to freedom of religion has been interpreted as a right of religion to internal autonomy. It asserts that women are being denied an effective right to freedom of religion insofar as they are unable to directly influence the content or structure of their religion. It argues that to fulfil women's equal right to freedom of religion, women's power and position within religion must be equivalent to men's. It therefore asserts that an intrinsic part of States' obligation to secure the right to freedom of religion is the facilitation of gender equality within religion. The article culminates by proposing proportionate and appropriate methods to facilitate gender equality within religion.

The interactions between religion and the media are characterized by a great complexity, manifesting itself inter alia in the impact on the spheres of culture, education and religion, making these dimensions almost obliged to subordinate themselves to the influence of the media, as well as to use the media tools in their activity to fulfill the basic or constitutive aims. In this article one of the aspects of the relationship existing between religion and the media will be discussed, namely, the use of the Internet by the Catholic Church – mainly in Poland, though not only – to distribute religious content and ideas, originally contributing to the support of the pastoral ministry and evangelization. At the same time, the features of the recipients of these activities will be outlined, indicating – at least indirectly – the effectiveness and accuracy of both the inevitable and essential alliance between the sacrum and the media nowadays.

Contemporary advertising, both commercial and social, appeals increasingly to religious symbolism as a rhetorical argument. Communicative as well as persuasive effectiveness of advertising depends indeed on the appropriate denotation and connotation of the iconography used in visual advertisements. Religious, and particularly Christian, symbolism is generally clear to the addressees in our culture. This paper aims to answer the question of the consequences which the cultural reinterpretation of Christian imagery in visual advertising brings. The author argues that this process results in a “semantic shift” involving the expansion of the original meanings. On the one hand, Christian iconography loses some of its genetic sacredness; on the other hand, it sacralizes the new reality which is being advertised. The author proves his thesis by means of pointing to the reinterpretation of two established Christian images, i.e. the Last Supper and the Cross.

Next to the language, history (or rather historical memory) or inhabited a territory of the common name, religion is considered as one of the determinants of ethnic identity. Ethnicity happens to be context-sensitive, because of certain ethnic characteristics such as language, customs, traditions, while religion manifests themselves in particular situations. Ethnicity – which is particularly evident in modern times – is multidimensional, because of many ways we can distinguish or define social groups. Religion, in turn, can be treated as a cultural system. This article deals with the role it plays religion (understood as a system of meanings, as a cultural system) in shaping the identity of an ethnic minority – Kashubs. Kashubians, an ethnic minority living in northern Poland, speak a regional – Kashubian. They are predominantly Catholic, and the Catholic religion plays a significant part in their lives (even today). This article presents the meaning of pilgrimage in the creation of Kashubian group identity.

Subject and purpose of work: This work presents an economic theory of religion. Its aim is to gain insight into one of the modern concepts of religion in the perspective of secularisation. Materials and methods: While describing the essence of this theory, apart from personal views, also other opinions of contemporary sociologists of religion were used. Results: This study highlighted the fact that the presented concept has a diverse range of references and interprets religion in a specific way. It is a concept competing against the secularisation thesis, and its essence is in direct application of the rational choice theory and exchange theory. Conclusions: Approaching religion only through the formula of supply, significantly reduces the field of interpretation and does not explain all the mechanisms of religious changes in the contemporary world.
Przedmiot i cel pracy: Praca przedstawia ekonomiczną teorię religii. Jej celem jest spojrzenie na jedną ze współczesnych koncepcji religii w perspektywie sekularyzacji. Materiały i metody: W opisie istoty tej teorii posłużono się obok własnych, także innymi opiniami współczesnych socjologów religii. Wyniki: W pracy podkreślono, że przedstawiona koncepcja ma różnorodną skalę odniesień i w specyficzny sposób interpretuje religię. Jest konkurującą koncepcją wobec tezy sekularyzacyjnej, a jej istotą jest bezpośrednie zastosowanie teorii racjonalnego wyboru i teorii wymiany. Wnioski: Traktowanie religii tylko w formule podaży znacznie ogranicza pole interpretacyjne i nie wyjaśnia wszystkich mechanizmów przemian religijnych we współczesnym świecie.

Catholics in the liberal pluralism state. Facing secularisation in the monthly Znak (1989–2000) The aim of this paper is to analyse the philosophical, sociological, politological, theological and press articles on the issue of secularisation that were published in the monthly Znak during 1989–2000. A definition of secularisation is employed that was coined by Charles Taylor in A secular age (Taylor, 2007). It is understood as the endurance of religion in a plural society. The paper delineates three stands that the Znak Catholics have taken when facing secularisation: (1) an open catholicity; (2) a liberal faith; and (3) an ambiguous one. (1) The first approach involves confronting one’s liberal, secular partners in public debates, with a focus on finding some of their points acceptable according to the Church doctrine. Nevertheless, it is burdened with the anxiety of losing one’s own identity. (2) The second approach emphasises some of the connections between liberal and Christian ideas. A particular meaning of liberty and authenticity in human existence is stressed. (3) In the third approach, although it does not admit to its malevolence, the liberal ideas are treated with sharp criticism. Liberalism is accused of limiting the role of religion in a plural society. In the conclusion to the paper, an attempt is made to present the current relations between liberalism and Christianity in Po‑ land. A deep recent transformation is revealed. It is believed that Znak will lose its function as a continuity sustainer in the next few years.

The changes taking place in our times in the religious sphere can be simply presented as occurring between secularization and desecularization. The former trend is especially visible in Western Europe, where it is characteristically and clearly making its presence felt, thus becoming a specific emblem on the religious map of the world. The latter tendency also appears in the Old Continent, but on a much smaller scale and with limited impact. In this article religiousness among young people in chosen European countries will be demonstrated, as well as an attempt will be made to answer the question whether and to what extent the religious changes occur in these societies. Furthermore, there will be an attempt made to define whether they form part of either the secularizational or desecularizational trends. The data of the European Social Survey from Round 1 (2002) and Round 2 (2016) will provide the basis for the analyses, which will make it possible to show the appearing religious changes and the directions of their transformations in the course of almost one and a half decade.

Emphasizing the thoughts of E. Cioran, who points out that only a religious man can properly grasp the nature of being, the article addresses the issue of metaphysical openness.  Firstly, it considers what the metaphysical idea of openness is, and how it relates to religion. The second point of analysis is whether acceptance of the existence of God (Transcendence) can be combined with the idea of an open world? The third notion is whether man and culture, deprived of religious experiences, are actually threatened with closing the world and living only in hic et nunc? In the religious sense, openness must be considered twofold. On the one hand, it is looking towards another dimension of reality, on the other hand, it is openness to the depths of man himself. In reference to human life, such openness signifies that it cannot be reduced to a biological dimension demarcated by birth and death. Man is always something more. When it comes to values, it turns out that they cannot be reduced to our will and creativity, because there is something more to them. Religious openness prevents the reduction of the world to something singular and universal, and prevents us from becoming stuck in the world and in ourselves.

Is it possible to respond to contemporary challenges of Christianity from the meta-perspective of philosophy and cultural studies? We have divided the articles presented here into three groups: challenges faced by religion regarding science, challenges of secularisation, and challenges in the Church itself. The articles from the volume do not address these problems in totally different ways. The issues of consistency and rationality of religion become reinterpreted, for example when compared to results of empirical sciences, but also in a broadly understood public debate. We shall try to show a close relationship between the Christian religion and such phenomena as: science, media, churches, medicine, war, law, etc. Our point of departure is a search for the current function of Christianity, with the Catholic Church in the centre, but the questions transcend the present state of a particular religion.

Joseph T. O’Connell drew attention to the relative scarcity of academic work on religion in South Asia, and o ered as a plausible explanation for this state of a airs the tension between secular and religio‐political communal interests. This paper explores the potential role of phi‐ losophy as an established academic discipline within this situation, in the context of India. It argues that objective study, including evaluation, of the truth claims of various religious traditions is an important aspect of academic as opposed to confessional engagement with religion, and that philosophy in India is especially well suited to undertake such re ection and to provide corresponding education. Unlike Western countries, philosophy and religion were never clearly separated in India and did not evolve in tension with one another. The history of Indian philosophy therefore includes and is included within the history of its ‘religions’, in a way that makes philosophical examination of the truth claims of Indian religions internal to those religions themselves. By tracing this history, the discipline of philosophy can help to unsettle the idea of religion as a matter of xed dogma. It can also continue the procedure of interpreting and evaluating metaphysical and epistemological theses that has been an intrinsic component of Indian religious thought for most of its history.

The main objective of the study is to identify, in a broad sense, the changes taking place in the religious sphere in the Latin American region, with particular emphasis on the legal aspects of this phenomenon. The different parts cover separate problem areas which will need to be addressed by the legislators in the near future. This problem is a major research thesis. Interdisciplinarity is justified by the subject of the research undertaken. It remains at the junction of law, political science, sociology and history, as well as the religious studies. The legal and religious relations are presented on the basis of a comparative legal method and a historical-legal method. Despite the clear decrease in the number of people identifying themselves with the Catholic Church, they still constitute the majority in the region. Two tendencies can be noticed: Catholics change religious affiliation, leaving the church in favor of Protestant communities, especially by neo-Pentecostal groups; the number of people who do not identify with any institutional form of religious association increases. The phenomenon of religiosity has changed significantly compared to the last century. More and more people choose beliefs and evaluate them according to subjective criteria. They choose values in spiritual life, without the need to participate in an institutionalized religious organization.
El objetivo principal del estudio es identificar, en un sentido amplio, los cambios que se están produciendo en el ámbito religioso en la región latinoamericana, con especial énfasis en los aspectos legales de este fenómeno. Las diferentes partes cubren áreas problemáticas separadas que deberán ser abordadas por los legisladores en un futuro próximo. Este problema es una importante tesis de investigación. La interdisciplinariedad se justifica por el tema de la investigación realizada, por ende, pertenece a la confluencia del derecho, la ciencia política, la sociología y la historia, así como las ciencias de la religión. Las relaciones jurídicas y religiosas se presentan sobre la base de un método jurídico comparativo y de un método histórico-jurídico. A pesar de la clara disminución en el número de personas que se identifican con la Iglesia católica, aún constituyen la mayoría en la región. Se pueden ver fácilmente dos tendencias: los católicos cambian su afiliación confesional al abandonar la Iglesia a favor de las comunidades protestantes, especialmente por los grupos neopentecostales; aumenta el porcentaje de personas que no se identifican con ninguna forma institucional de una relación religiosa. El fenómeno religioso ha cambiado significativamente en comparación con el siglo pasado. Cada vez más personas eligen creencias y las evalúan según criterios subjetivos, seleccionan valores en la vida espiritual, sin necesidad de mediar en una institución religiosa.

Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób zastosowanie teorii dyskursu do problematyzowania rozumienia religii i sfery publicznej może skierować uwagę na nowe aspekty w badaniu publicznej roli religii. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej, krótko prezentuję dotychczasowe badania na temat publicznej obecności religii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem koncepcji teorii deprywatyzacji i religii publicznej José Casanovy. W drugiej części pokazuję, jak przyjęte przez Casanovę założenia dotyczące religii oraz sfery publicznej przekładają się na ograniczenia dla rozumienia i badania publicznej obecności religii. W odpowiedzi na te krytyczne głosy, w trzeciej części, wskazuję, w jaki sposób teoria dyskursu może być przydatna w radzeniu sobie z takimi ograniczeniami, a w rezultacie pozwolić na trafniejszą diagnozę oraz interpretację roli religii w sferze publicznej.
The article demonstrates how the application of discourse theory in order to problematize the definitions of religion and public sphere may bring novel and promising results in the study of religion’s public presence. The article consists of three parts. In the first part, the existing research on the public presence of religion is briefly reviewed, with a particular focus on José Casanova’s theory of de-privatisation and public forms of religion. In the second part, it is discussed how the assumptions underlying Casanova’s theory limit our understanding of and research on public religion. In the third part, it is demonstrated that discourse theory may help to overcome these limitations and may allow for the more adequate diagnosis and interpretation of the role of religion in the public sphere.

Given India’s vibrant religious landscape, there is a somewhat surprising paucity of depart‐ ments, centres or even programs for the academic study of religion. This article discusses this issue based on the preliminary results of an interview study conducted at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India, in 2014 and 20 Its focus is on the views of university teachers and researchers concerning the place, role and function of religion and religious stud‐ ies at BHU. Twenty‐eight semi‐structured interviews were conducted. In the course of their analysis, six themes emerged: 1) the place and role of religion in society; 2) religion as ‘religi‐ osity/spirituality’ or sanatana dharma vs. political ideology/communitarianism; 3) religion vs. dharma; 4) secularization; 5) religion in education in general; and, 6) religion in the education at BHU. The informants agreed on the increasing importance of religion in India, and most of them viewed the meaning of secularization as being ‘equal respect for all religions’. Moreover, a majority distinguished between ‘religion’, in the Western sense, and the Indian conception of dharma, considering it regrettable that the latter, described as the common ground of all reli‐ gions, is not taught more extensively at BHU. They also considered the original ideal of BHU’s founder, Madan Mohan Malaviya, to be of signi cant importance. That ideal involved not only teaching students the knowledge and skill sets found in a standard modern university, but also equipping them with a value‐based education, grounded upon sanatana‐dharma. As our project progresses, further understanding of this turn toward dharma education is something we intend to pursue through the lens of multiple modernities, developed by Marian Burchardt et al. as multiple secularities.

One of the problems of contemporary society is the understanding of sacrum - its place and meaning for the common day life. This article presents two sources that distinguishing sacrum / profanum - in space and time - entered into culture of the European society. The source of separating space into sacred and profane is the religiosity that is based on observation of nature. The source of separating time into this two spheres is the biblical religion. In the European culture this dual perception was introduced through Christianity (biblical tradition and metaphysics). The way how this perception functions in daily life reveals not only the attitude towards religion but above all projects on the understanding of dignity of a person.

Artykuł przedstawia kluczowe etapy rozwoju socjologii religii, a na tym tle prezentowane jest znaczenie badań naukowych w tym zakresie, prowadzonych na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. Pierwszą fazę rozwoju prezentują klasycy socjologii religii, Emilé Durkheim i Max Weber, których zręby rozumienia religii są wkomponowane w całościowe wizje społeczeństwa. Oni też w swoich teoriach zawarli przesłanki dla rozumienia sekularyzacji, które były rozwijane przez następne pokolenia socjologów religii. Autorka stawia tezę, że teorie sekularyzacji i dyskusje wokół niej były ważnym elementem powstania nowych teorii, w tym ważnej koncepcji religii publicznej José Casanovy. Na tle światowych trendów w rozwoju socjologii religii zaprezentowane są osiągnięcia socjologów pracujących na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim, których dorobek badawczy i publikacyjny zyskał miano lubelskiej szkoły socjologii religii. Wśród nich szczególnie zasłużyli się ks. Franciszek Mirek, ks. Józef Majka, ks. Władysław Piwowarski i ks. Janusz Mariański, których najważniejsze zasługi są w artykule omówione, na tle rozwoju dyscypliny w Polsce.
The article present crucial points in development of sociology of religion, and the role of research conducted at Catholic University of Lublin is presented at this background. The first faze is presented by achievements of classics in the field, Emilé Durkheim i Max Weber, who their understanding of religion implemented to the holistic concepts of society. They also in their theories observed some elements of secularization process, that later were developed by the next generations of sociologists of religion. Author thesis is that theories of secularization were formative for development of the reflection on the changing social role of religion and had an impact on further theories of religion, including the influential concept of José Casanova about the return of religion to public life. The role of sociologist from the Catholic University of Lublin, known as school of sociology of religion from Lublin, is presented on this background. Achievements of the main figures, such as fr. Franciszek Mirek, fr. Józef Majka, fr Władysław Piwowarski and fr. Janusz Mariański, with taking into account influence of their research on sociology of religion in Poland.

The term “tolerance”, strictly speaking, does not belong to Spinoza’s vocabulary, and the notion of “tolerance”, in its modern sense, is not part of his concepts either. However, the separation of theology and politics, which is the subject of the Theological-Political Treatise, envelops an even more radical separation between immanence and transcendence. An entirely immanent policy would be indifferent to “values” and “justifications” of any kind (moral, religious, rational). It would be based only on the “accounts” of individual “preferences”. We show that Spinoza’s philosophy can help us conceive (perhaps one day achieve) such a form of radical, or “absolute” democracy.
Termin „tolerancja”, ściśle mówiąc, nie należy do słownika Spinozy, podobnie jak pojęcie „tolerancji”. Jednak rozdział teologii i polityki, o której mowa w Traktacie teologiczno-politycznym, ukrywa jeszcze bardziej radykalny rozdział immanencji i transcendencji. Całkowicie immanentne ustawodawstwo byłoby neutralne w kwestii wszelkiego rodzaju „wartości” i „uzasadnień” (moralnych, religijnych, racjonalnych). Opierałoby się wyłącznie na „koncepcjach” indywidualnych „preferencji”. Argumentujemy, że filozofia Spinozy może nam pomóc wyobrazić sobie (a być może w przyszłości również osiągnąć) taką formę radykalnej, czy „absolutnej” demokracji.

The question concerning how modern religion lesson should look like is still a current one and is often discussed by catechists. An important issue is to decide what kind of language to use in catechesis in order to reach the todayʼs youth. Therefore, in this article, there has been undertaken an attempt to present slang as a specific language which uses its own separate vocabulary and sometimes is understandable solely to a few. The language like that is being used by the todayʼs youth who wants to emphasize its independence. The religion teacher who stands in front of young people has to make a difficult decision whether to use slang to deliver important catechetical contents or not. The final question concerning the slang usage is still open for it has both its followers and opponents.

The aim of the article is to verify the category of ressentiment developed by Max Scheler in the light of disputes about the sources and causes of secularization. The category of ressentiment is one of the most important subjects of the author’s scientific reflection, being an expression of his particular interest in the functioning of the world of values. On the other hand, the processes of secularization, which have become visible in Western societies in recent decades, are understood here as the result of a decline in interest in religious issues and the disappearance of references to the broadly understood supernatural world. The key issues concern the extent to which the phenomenological conceptual apparatus developed by Scheler can serve today as an effective tool for a fuller understanding of the essence of contemporary disputes over the secularization of the West. Thus, it seems possible to assess the topicality of Scheler’s approach to the world of values as a timeless model and point of reference in research on the changing social reality.

The paper maintains and reinforces a viewpoint that science and religion (theology) are methodologically and epistemologically independent. However, it also suggests that this independence can be overcome if a “third party” is taken into account, that is – philosophy. El presente artículo presenta una caracterización y una descripción general de tres cultos religiosos de origen popular que tienen una amplia difusión en el México contemporáneo: el culto conchero, el Espiritualismo Trinitario Mariano y el culto a la Santa Muerte. Aunque sus antecedentes históricos son distintos (el siglo XVIII, el siglo XIX y el siglo XX, respectivamente), los tres tienen en común varios elementos: son de origen urbano, tienen un fuerte arraigo entre sectores de escasos recursos, se han difundido no sólo en el país sino también en el extranjero, poseen una relación muy estrecha con el imaginario nacionalista mexicano, son sincréticos (pues combinan rasgos culturales occidentales y de origen autóctono) y mantienen entre ellos fuertes relaciones de interactividad. Estos tres cultos pueden ser vistos como respuestas de las clases subalternas a los procesos de dominación ideológica que la iglesia católica ha desarrollado en México desde la época colonial hasta nuestros días, es decir, como una reacción de los sectores populares mexicanos al proyecto de asimilación a los cánones religiosos de origen europeo a través de diversos mecanismos de resistencia cultural, que han preservado muchas prácticas autónomas y de origen autóctono disfrazándolas bajo la forma de la ortodoxia oficial del cristianismo.

The article discusses the extent to which the three multicultural learning strategies implemented to promote multiculturalism differ and how the initiatives takes into account religious differences and Islam. Methodologically, the article focuses on thematic content analysis of the three multicultural education projects. The thematic content analysis makes it possible to study what is being discussed in the multicultural context and how it is being interpreted through these ideas and concepts. The aim of these school projects is to create a common language environment and a new (well-integrated) national identity. Based on the Estonian super-secular society (less than 19% Estonians considered themselves to be a part of some congregation or religious), the peculiarities of religion orientation are not so much taken into account in these multicultural learning strategies and Islam occurs in connection with radicalism.

Amidst the many topics important for the shaping of character of adolescents in Original Stories, Mary Wollstonecraft places such important issues as our attitude towards animals. She wants to convince the readers that not only should we not hurt animals but also offer them our aid. The education that sensitises us to the fate of animals is an important element of moral education. Being kind for the beings of other species is what makes us better, more compassionate. And reversely being cruel towards animals turns us into brutes capable of hurting also people. Tormenting animals is moreover inconsistent with God’s will and leads to the infliction of completely unnecessary and senseless suffering. Which is why it deserves severe condemnation.

The year 1643 saw the publication of Listy swięteo oyca Partheniusza do Piotra Mohily, which came out of the printing press of the Polish‑language department of the Kyiv Lavra. In the Letters Parthenius – a relatively unknown patriarch of Constantinople – discusses Confessio Fidei – a succinct confession of faith published in Geneva in 1629 under the name of Cyril Lucaris – an Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and opponent of the union. As Confessio is clearly Calvinist is spirit, Parthenius refutes Lucaris’ authorship and imposes an anathema on the genuine author of Confessio and its propagators. The recipient and a probable translator of Letters is Peter Mohyla – a distinguished Metropolitan of Kyiv, author of the first Orthodox catechism and founder of the Mohyla Collegium. The paper addresses the issue of the Letters, in particular their Polish translation and the identity of the translator but does so against the broader background of the circumstances occasioned by the emergence of the contentious Confessio and the Orthodox Church’s ultimate reaction to its emergence.

Fundamentalism characterizes all religions in the world, but in the case of Islam – in recent times – it most often causes the use of terrorist methods. The dogmas of that religion defines the Koran, according to which Islam is based on five pillars of faith, which are also fundamental duties of every Muslim. A feature of Islamic fundamentalism is the introduction of the principles of life, based on traditional patterns recorded in the Koran, regulating social and political spheres, as well as the separation of the Western way of life. Its causes are frustration and social discontent, combined with the rejection of modernity and the changes proposed by the West. The proclamation of position of fight against injustice and demoralization in the name of creating a “better world”, in conjunction with its own interpretation of the provisions of the Koran, results in promoting activities generally considered unacceptable.

On the one hand, when compared with the ‘original meaning’ of politics in the Classical or Christian thought, contemporary liberal democracies in general understand politics in a reduced sense. On the other hand, however, democratic debates constantly allow for opening new horizons of interpreting politics. One way to radically renew politics is accepting authentic testimonies as political arguments. To illustrate this point, I offer the reflective analysis of a concrete case concerning the hotly debated topic of migrants in Europe: a Benedictine monastery receives and hosts illegal migrants in Hungary. This example deserves our interest for – when not tendentiously misinterpreted – it can neither be classified as an argument of the conservative approach to migrants nor does it support the liberal reading of the events. It implies, at the same time, a positive and a negative critique to both approaches by simply going beyond the usual political categories. In order to see how testimony works as a political argument I undertake three steps: 1) Instead of defining testimony, I show through a phenomenological analysis three characteristics of the given example that are both, essential and relevant for political discourse: a) the essentially indeterminate meaning of testimony; b) self-exposure and self-sacrifice; c) the particular political message of authentic testimony. In the next step, I offer a brief analysis of contemporary political discourse to highlight those aspects concerning which authentic testimonies may transform the meaning of politics: a) mediatization; b) lack of authenticity and credibility; c) technical scientific language; d) impersonal approach to political issues. As a third step, I unite these two analysis by asking what counts as a political argument in general and whether and how testimonies can function as political arguments. In my conclusion, I distinguish two types of politics according to their attitude towards testimony: one that is open to authentic testimonies and one that rejects them. By showing some fatal consequences of the latter option I argue for recovering some of politics’ original meaning.

The title of this article promises to focus on religion as a motivational drive for terrorism. However, I am far from thoughtless replicating the term ’religious terrorism’. It mistakenly suggests some presumed obviousness in defining the problem. Meanwhile, in recent decades the so-called critical terrorism studies have repeatedly proved that such labeling generates problems instead of explaining them. Cultural visual studies show that religious terrorism has many faces.

For long, the military was a cog in the wheel of democratic governance in Nigeria. Its intrusion into the politics of the nation resulted to its domination of the political space and imposition of arbitrary rule for an aggregate period of 29 years out of the nation’s 47 years of existence. The last disengagement of the military from politics was effected on 29, May 1999. The Fourth Republic was thus inaugurated, heralding yet another phase in the nation’s quest for democratic governance. The restoration of democratic rule was not achieved on a platter of gold. The military junta was subjected to intense domestic and international pressure. Along with myriad civil society groups, the church added its voice to the clamour for democracy. But inspite of its visible role in this struggle, the efforts of the church remain unsung. This study is intended partly as a redress for the marginal attention paid to the patriotic struggle of the church, but more significantly, it is an attempt to illuminate the increasing concern of the church with the secular welfare of its flock.

The paper concerns Martin Buber’s idea of God as “eternal Thou”. This concept is typical of the dialogical phase of his philosophy. His inspiration came from religion (judaism and christianity). First of all, for Buber, God is a mystery. The main purpose of man was the entrance into the existential relationship with the revealing God, who was described as “eternal Thou”, “absolute Person” and “Ground of being”. A man can dialogue with Him through the different beings. Buber’s ideas are very close to panentheism. In Buber’s work we have the problem of the “becoming” God. The solution of this question is not on the ontological level but on the moral one – God “becomes” through the dialogical life of the man in the world.

Geography as a field of research in Kraków first developed in the middle of the 19th century. The Faculty of Tourism at Jagiellonian University was the first to create a large program in pilgrimage research between 1936 and 1939. The politics of the next five decades hampered the development of the program, with full-time studies beginning in the 1980s. The geography of religion program focused on research on the global nature of pilgrimages. Key research interests included historical and spatial issues and their effect on infrastructural, social, and economic changes at centers of religious worship as well as in surrounding regions and countries.
