Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present and discuss the causes and ways of forming prejudices in contemporary societies. I examine consecutively the impact of family, education, workplace and the media on the formation of prejudices, paying special attention to the last dimension. In the empirical section of this article, I analyse ‘the image of Poles’ as depicted in selected German newspapers from 1989 and 2004, and I attempt to find out whether this image changes over time.

Opis:
The problem of relations between Russia and the West, including the relation between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, is traditionally numbered as one of the most significant ones in Polish historical literature. The article presents the process of forming the stereotype of the image of the Catholic and Catholicism in Russia in the span of ten centuries. Continuous meeting strangers in the times of Kiev Ruthenia did not give any grounds for a negative attitude towards foreigners due to their Latin rite. A poor level of Christianization of Eastern Slavs does not allow perceiving other reasons for the arising hostilities than political and economic ones. The Tartar invasion broke the continuous history of the Ruthenian duchies and isolated the north-eastern ones from the others. It was in that period of isolation that the theory of the exceptional quality of the Moscow State originated, and of its particular role in the life of the surrounding nations. The religious factor served as a tool for policy of Russification and for making the other nations dependent. The author of the article tries to point to theological backwardness of the Orthodox clergy, to the fact that they uncritically adopted the Greeks’ attitudes, and then the attitudes of West European philosophers, towards Rome. It is exactly the lack of good knowledge of the subject and a close bond between religion and politics that does not allow the Orthodox Russians to enter a dialog with Catholics.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to describe the image of a German dwelling in the minds of the contemporary residents of Gdańsk, and to reveal some of its cultural, historical, psychological and social determinants. The data analysed and presented here comes from several surveys conducted by the author (2004–2007). The surveys indicate that the residents of Gdańsk are going through the process of overcoming prejudice towards the Germans and changing the content of the German’s image towards a more positive view. The process is driven by generation replacement and development of intercultural contacts. The surveys reveal that the positive image of a German correlates with younger age of the subject, higher education, and psychical wellbeing.

Opis:
Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, states in an interview that Joseph Conrad ensconces racism in his adjective-ridden writing style. More than that, Achebe even states that Conrad intentionally tries to confuse his readers so that they do not detect his racism. Arguments of intention are dangerous, especially when the author that is subjected to one is deceased. They cannot defend themselves. In order to see if Achebe’s claim of hidden racism in Heart of Darkness is true or not, I have read two other works by Conrad, The Secret Sharer and The Shadow Line: A Confession, and compared their writing. Using more analyses of Conrad’s works, I discover that Conrad is not too confusing for his readers; most people understand him. However, I notice that Heart of Darkness is written in a more confusing style. Adding Conrad’s philosophy and reviewing it with Nietzsche’s philosophy, we see that Conrad doesn’t seem like someone who would try to be racist and then hide it. The argument of intention would also seem to have an air of arrogance, as it appears Achebe thinks other readers are unable to comprehend Conrad’s text the way he can, or at least without his guidance. In conclusion, I surmise that arguments of intention are dangerous and that no one should make them because they are largely insupportable. If anything, an argument of intention has all the qualities of prejudice and once investigated, seems just as absurd as arguments for racism.

The aim of this paper is to characterize and dispute the cultural stereotypes and prejudices against the Indians depicted in the writings of Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), one of the most popular British novelists of the Victorian era. The starting point for these reflections is George Orwell’s essay in which he describes Kipling as a racist and imperialist as well as a morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting figure. To verify this view the present author undertakes an analysis of the cultural stereotypes and prejudices embedded in the selected novels by Kipling. In reconsidering Kipling’s works, she traces the connections between his own world-view and the negative reception of Indians within the Anglo-Indian community by which he was largely shaped. The paper concludes by supporting Orwell’s criticism and demonstrating how Kipling reinforced the stereotype of an Indian, thus reflecting the cultural cliché widespread among the xenophobic and conservative Anglo-Indians in the 19th century

The presented study explores the possibility of creating and implementing educational program which would reduce intergroup bias in realistic high school setting. The project was based on the assumption that there is the need of easily applicable, anti-prejudice intervention, which would be appropriate to introduce into foreign language course books, would be universal in terms of changing negative attitudes and would meet all methodological requirements of language lessons. Crossed categorization and the common ingroup identity model were used as theoretical basis for 30 English lesson scenarios on B2 level (upper-intermediate). It was shown that after the intervention there was a signifi cant change in the students’ attitude toward the outgroup and the outgroup members. The implications of these fi ndings are discussed.

In the context of contemporary reality, the issue of multicultural education is becoming more and more popular. Therefore, the purpose of the article is two-fold: to discuss Banks’ vve dimensions of multicultural education and to share some ideas on how these dimensions are or can be used to assist teachers in integrating multicultural content into their primary foreign language classrooms. Moreover, one section of the paper is devoted to the vgure of Professor James. A Banks, who is widely regarded as a founder of multicultural education. Moreover, the professor’s own rewections on the dimensions of interest expressed in the interview conducted by Tucker in 1998 are presented. Finally, having recognised the importance of early multicultural education, the author of the article concludes that primary foreign language teachers should not hesitate and encourages them to start preparing their students to become unbiased global citizens.

The text deals with the question of the influence of international exchange programmes on reducing ethnic prejudices in their participants. Apart from a brief introduction into the issue of reducing prejudice, it comprises 392 free responses of Czech respondents, predominantly students, who have filled out an online survey as part of the project Intergroup Attitudes and Intergroup Contact in Central Europe. The participants gave accounts of their real contacts with Polish people, oftentimes within the framework of international exchange programmes, Erasmus in particular. Based on the comparison of the results of the qualitative analysis of the statements with the conditions of successful reduction of prejudices, one can suggest that international exchange programmes should have a positive influence on reducing negative ethnic stereotypes and prejudices among their participants.

In his book Fiasco Stanisław Lem is asking what human nature is, what man aspires to, how he achieves it. What is Good and Evil? Who will win in the eternal fight between these two forces? Human beings conquer the outer space, but do they manage to subdue their inner space? Accustomed to thinking about themselves as the peak of the civilization progress and the quintessence of the Universe, are men capable of accepting meekly the unpleasant truth that in this Universe they were not given any exceptional and honourable role? Lem’s answers shatter the comfortable anthropocentric ideas of mankind and its place in the world. The author speaks directly of the difficulties of liberating our consciousness from the accumulated complexes, stereotypes and prejudice, from the intolerance towards everything different, foreign and incomprehensible. He states that even when they conquer time and space, men are helpless in the face of the dark forces hidden deep inside their souls, in the face of the unavoidable fall of Earth’s civilization.

Based on the Tajfel’s and Turner’s Social Identity Theory an own research was constructed. The aim of the study was to check whether stereotyping and prejudices occur in relations between groups of army civilians and soldiers working together in the Polish Navy. In a questionnaire, 96 soldiers and 104 army civilians reported perceptions of their own vocational group and of the out-group and expressed dehumanization of the in- and out-group members. Respondents showed in-group favoritism in trait and emotion evaluations, but mutual dehumanization did not occur. However, it is interesting to note that, the group of regular soldiers was dehumanizing itself. The most important finding for practice is that members of both groups who have participated in integration workshops showed lower in-group favoritism, than integration non-participants. The implications of these results are discussed.
