Over the years of working at school teachers gain experience that is necessary for their professional development. The teaching experience may appear of little value if teachers do not reflect upon it. Reflection is the key to success in teaching. The article presents the results of a questionnaire conducted with foreign language teachers from Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland schools who were asked about their reflection. Many teachers (95%) reported that they reflected on their teaching and even made notes (50%). The research outcomes provide interesting facts about teachers’ reflections.

Wstęp: Pracownicy ochrony zdrowia, szczególnie ratownicy medyczni, są grupą zawodową, która podczas udzielania medycznych czynności ratunkowych narażona jest na zakażenia krwiopochodne. Niniejsze badania miały na celu ocenę wiedzy ratowników medycznych w zakresie zakażeń krwiopochodnych, ich profilaktyki oraz przerwania dróg transmisji zakażenia. Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 220 ratowników medycznych zatrudnionych w szpitalnych oddziałach ratunkowych oraz zespołach ratownictwa medycznego. Materiał zebrano drogą anonimowej ankiety, której kwestionariusz został specjalnie skonstruowany na potrzeby badań. Wyniki: Aż 80% ankietowanych osób deklaruje częsty kontakt z krwią pacjenta, 65% ratowników medycznych przed założeniem dostępu dożylnego przeprowadza badanie palpacyjne przebiegu żyły, a 81% wprowadza kaniulę dożylną bezpośrednio po dezynfekcji skóry. Środki ochrony osobistej stosuje 98% osób. Wnioski: Analiza wiedzy badanej grupy ratowników medycznych w zakresie aseptyki i antyseptyki zakażeń krwiopochodnych wskazuje na wiele braków we właściwym przygotowaniu personelu medycznego do ograniczenia skutków ekspozycji na materiał zakaźny. Przy tym osoby z wykształceniem wyższym zawodowym prezentowały wyższy poziom wiedzy niż osoby po policealnym studium zawodowym. W opinii badanej grupy najważniejszym czynnikiem wpływającym na zmniejszenie liczby zakażeń krwiopochodnych byłyby obowiązkowe szkolenia z tego zakresu. Med. Pr. 2013;64(2):239–243
Background: The health-care professionals, particularly paramedics are exposed to bloodborne infections during medical rescue operations. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge of bloodborne infections, their prevention and interrupted routes of infection transmission among paramedics. Materials and Methods: The study comprised 220 paramedics employed in emergency departments and ambulance services. Material was collected using an anonymus questionnaire, developed for the purpose of this study. Results: As many as 80% of the surveyed people reported frequent contact with patients' blood; 65% of the paramedics before establishing the intravenous access palpates the conduct of the vein; 81% introduce peripheral venous catheter directly after disinfection of the skin; and 98% apply personal protection measures. Conclusions: The analysis of knowledge of asepsis and antisepsis of bloodborne infections among paramedics points to a series of shortcomings in their adequate preparation to reduce the effects of exposure to infectious material. However, it should be emphasized that people with higher education presented a higher level of knowledge than those with postsecondary vocational education. In the opinion of the study group mandatory training in the discussed area would prove to be the most effective method for reducing the number of bloodborne infections. Med Pr 2013;64(2):239–243

The aim of this article is to examine early English references to those involved in storing, selling and making medicinal preparations. Also, we will attempt to find out how early pharmacists were perceived by other medical practitioners. The study is mainly based on the language material from two medical corpora Middle English Medical Texts (MEMT) and Early Modern English Medical Texts (EMEMT). In order to make the list of references to early pharmacists as comprehensive as possible, the online editions of the following dictionaries have been consulted: Historical Thesaurus of English (HTE), Middle English Dictionary (MED), and Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that theory-guided public relations practice is more likely to contribute to socially responsible behaviours by organizations than public relations approaches that are based solely on the emphasis on skills and the elaboration of “techniques,” and, to be frank, solely on the mythology of “best practice.” Consequently, theory-guided public relations may be better suited to bridge the gap between service for an organization and service for society. The article sets out with a short historical overview of the relationships between public relations theory and practice. It then goes on developing a methodological and empirical context designed to show connections between theory and practice. Furthermore, the paper highlights diff erent types of practitioners. Finally, a summary including prospects closes the article. Due to this, the following research question confirms these assumptions: how and why can theory-guided public relations contribute to socially responsible behaviours by practitioners?

Preparing students for the profession of a teacher involves internships in kindergartens and schools. Learning from practitioners and through practice can be considered in the light of E. Wenger’s theory of situated learning. The article presents the results of research aimed at identifying the experiences of post-graduate students of early-childhood studies related to the peripheral participation in early-childhood teachers communities of practice. The research project was carried out in accordance with the grounded theory, data were collected on the basis of analysis of documents, i.e. student documentation from continuous internships in kindergarten and school, presented in the form of critical events. On the basis of analysis of students’ statements, the barriers to learning from practitioners were identified - for example: encircling by the routine, superficiality activities, cultivating the teacher-expert worship; closing of teachers on modification of their practice; deprecating trainees and their activities, blocking the attempts of students to act differently. The article presents the characteristics of identified blockades, which are illustrated with examples from the collected empirical material.

Celem artykułu jest rozpoznanie pozytywnych i negatywnych konsekwencji włączenia menedżerów i innych praktyków w badania nauk o zarządzaniu i jakości. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań jakościowych w formie wywiadów swobodnych częściowo ukierunkowanych przeprowadzonych z 40 pracownikami naukowymi. Pokazują one, że wśród pozytywnych konsekwencji włączenia menedżerów i innych praktyków w badania można wymienić: możliwość uzyskania potwierdzenia ustaleń badacza, szerszego spojrzenia na problem badawczy, pozyskiwania pomysłów na realizację badań naukowych, formułowania pytań badawczych, zwiększenia przystępności języka naukowego dla osób spoza akademii oraz utylitarności i aplikacyjności badań. Zalety to także: tworzenie lepszych narzędzi badawczych, uzyskanie dostępu do zasobów, gromadzenie danych badawczych, zaangażowanie w interpretację, a następnie pisanie raportów z badań oraz komercjalizacja wyników badań. Natomiast negatywne konsekwencje odnoszą się do: postrzeganego braku korzyści z tytułu włączenia innych badaczy i/lub członków społeczeństwa w realizację procesu badawczego, braku możliwości zaangażowania menedżerów i innych praktyków we wszystkie problemy naukowe, postrzeganych nacisków ze strony interesariuszy na ostateczną postać wyników, trudności ze zrozumieniem specyfiki badań przez menedżerów i innych praktyków, koszto- i czasochłonności, subiektywizmu badacza, potencjalnego zagrożenia naruszeniem rygoru metodologicznego oraz praw własności intelektualnej.
The aim of the article is to identify positive and negative consequences of inclusion of managers and other practitioners in scientific research in management and quality science. The article presents the results of qualitative research in the form of semi-structured interviews conducted with forty scientists. The results show that positive consequences of inclusion of managers and other practitioners in scientific research include the possibility of confirming the researcher's findings, obtaining a broader view of the research problem, being provided with ideas for conducting scientific research, formulating research questions, making scientific language more accessible for people outside academia, the utilitarian and practical application of research, better creating research tools, accessing resources, collecting research data, involvement in interpretation and, subsequently, writing research reports, and commercializing research results. On the other hand, the negative consequences are the perceived lack of benefits from including managers and other practitioners in scientific research in the research process, the lack of opportunity to involve society in all scientific problems, organizational reluctance due to lack of benefits, pressure from organizations concerning the final form of results, difficulty in understanding the specifics of research by managers and other practitioners in scientific research, cost and time consumption, researcher subjectivity, and the risk of violating methodological rigor and intellectual property rights.

Background: Practicing yoga has become widely popular in Siberia and vegetarian diet constitutes one of its most important assumptions with a great impact on the human body. However, vegetarians are not the tradition in Siberia. Aim of the study: To evaluate the diet and assess whether Siberian yoga practitioners risk health reducing some nutrients’ intake. Material and methods: 47 Siberian women practicing yoga (program “Art of Living”), aged 31.9±7.4 years and the residents of Krasnoyarsk city were examined. Their height and weight were recorded. Then, the values of height and weight were used to calculate their BMI. After that, their current food con- sumption was assessed using a 24-hour nutritional recall. The recall was the basis to assess the quantitative content, com- position and nutritional value of their average daily nutrition ration. The mean energy values and the levels of basic food components were calculated with the use of the computer program. The studies were conducted in the winter-spring period. Results: The data shows that, within the group of women examined in the study, over- or under-nutrition in accordance to the classification of BMI 20.88±2.51 kg/m2 have not been found. Their daily diet includes milk and dairy products, grains, legumes, nuts, cereals, vegetables, fruit, dried fruit, berries, leafy greens, seeds and herbs. Lacto vegetarian sportswomen have 4–5 meals a day with the use of up to 2 liters of water. The diet contains a variety of products and takes energy from carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The diet provides quantitative protein content, but it should be designed to avoid the use of proteins as the energy source. The ratio of proteins vs. fats vs. carbohydrates was 1 : 1 : 3.96, which can be considered as the norm for proteins and fats, but not for carbohydrates (recommendations for sportsmen 1 : 1 : 5). In our opinion, the energy goals were not met due to low intake of carbohydrates in women group practicing yoga in Siberia. The daily average consumption of vitamins in the group corresponds to the consumption of vitamins in the whole Russian population. Unfortunately, there is the imbalance between calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) in the dietary habits which is not positive for the musculoskeletal system. We have also identified a high consumption of sodium (Na) and low of potassium (K), which can lead to some kidney and heart disorders. Conclusions: The research has helped us to answer the ques- tion whether Siberian yoga practitioners risk health if they are lacto vegetarians. Here are the findings: 1. Among lacto vegetarian yoga practitioners from Siberia over- or under-nutrition in accordance to the classification of BMI have not been found. 2. Lacto vegetarian yoga practitioners have appropriate nutritional habits: 4–5 meals a day with the use of up to 2 litres of water. 3. Food set has plastic, energy and biologically stimulating regulatory value. 4. Siberian female yoga practitioners have low (2%) probable risk of osteoporosis caused by inadequate intake of Ca in their daily diet and medium-risk (16%) of anemia caused by iron (Fe) deficiency and, therefore, they should supplement their diet using mineral supplements from the pharmacy. Certainly, vegetarians are not the tradition from the point of view of Siberia where it is difficult to find fresh vegetables, but lacto vegetarian diet can be successfully used.
Wstęp: Uprawianie jogi stało się bardzo popularne w regionie Syberii, a wegetarianizm, który ma znaczący wpływ na organizm człowieka, jest uważany za jeden z ważnych elementów tej sztuki. Cel pracy: Ponieważ wegetarianizm nie jest tradycją na Syberii, celem pracy było zbadanie i ocena diety syberyjskich kobiet uprawiających jogę oraz odpowiedź na pytanie, czy ryzykują one utratę zdrowia, zmniejszając spożycie niektórych składników odżywczych. Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięło udział 47 kobiet (średnia wieku wynosiła 31,9±7,4 lat (SD)), zamieszkałych w Krasnojarsku, uczestniczących jednocześnie w programie „Sztuka życia”. Na podstawie pomiaru wzrostu i wagi wyliczono ich BMI, 24-godzinna obserwacja nawyków dietetycznych kobiet była podstawą do oceny zawartości ilościowej, kompozycji i oceny wartości odżywczej dziennej porcji żywieniowej. Przy użyciu programu komputerowego obliczono również wartość energetyczną podstawowych produktów żywieniowych. Badanie przeprowadzono w okresie zimowo-wiosennym. Wyniki: Zebrane dane pokazują, że w grupie badanych nie stwierdzono niedożywienia ani nadwagi, biorąc pod uwagę czynnik BMI. Codzienna dieta zawiera takie składniki jak: mleko i produkty mleczne, produkty wielozbożowe, rośliny strączkowe, orzechy, płatki owsiane, warzywa i owoce, w tym również owoce suszone, warzywa liściaste, nasiona i zioła. Kobiety spożywają od 4 do 5 posiłków dziennie i piją średnio 2 litry wody. Ich dieta jest zróżnicowana, a źródłem energii są węglowodany, białka i tłuszcze. Białka stanowią znaczną część ich diety, ale powinno się unikać sytuacji, w których stanowią najważniejsze źródło energii. Stosunek białka do tłuszczów i węglowodanów wyniósł 1 : 1 : 3,96, co może być uznane za normę dla białka i tłuszczu, ale nie stanowi normy dla węglowodanów. Prawidłowo u osób uprawiających sport powinien on wynosić 1 : 1 : 5. Tak więc zauważamy nieznaczny niedobór węglowodanów w codziennej diecie. Średnie spożycie witamin odpowiada standardom przyjętym dla całej populacji rosyjskiej. Niestety, zauważono zachwianie równowagi pomiędzy spożyciem wapnia, fosforu i magnezu, co może mieć znaczący wpływ na rozwój i funkcjonowanie układu mięśniowo-kostnego. Zaobserwowano również wysokie spożycie sodu i niskie potasu – może to wpływać na zaburzenia i choroby serca oraz nerek. Wnioski: Badanie stało się podstawą do odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy kobiety uprawiające jogę na Syberii i stosujące dietę wysokobiałkową ryzykują zdrowiem. Wśród wniosków możemy znaleźć następujące: 1. Nie stwierdzono niedowagi lub nadwagi w grupie badawczej. 2. Badane kobiety mają prawidłowe nawyki żywieniowe i spożywają prawidłową liczbę posiłków. 3. Spożywane produkty mają prawidłową biologiczną i energetyczną wartość. 4. Stwierdzono, że u kobiet w grupie badawczej prawdopodobieństwo wystąpienia osteoporozy wynosi 2%, co jest spowodowane niedoborem wapnia, a 16% prawdopodo- bieństwo pojawienia się anemii z powodu niedoboru żelaza, które powinny uzupełniać, stosując suplementy minerałów dostępne w aptece. 5. Wegetarianizm nie jest tradycją na Syberii, ale dieta wysokobiałkowa może być stosowana z powodzeniem wśród osób uprawiających jogę.

Opis:
Background. Lyme disease (LD ) is the most frequent tick-borne human disease in the world. In patients with nonspecific or late-onset symptoms, LD is still a challenge for family physicians (FPs). Some studies which have been published on LD management by FPs revealed a deviation from the guideline recommendations and clinical practice. Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine the common practice of FPs in the treatment of LD and whether these practices align with the guideline recommendations. Material and methods. The study consisted of a survey of 54 FPs, including 46 women and 8 men at a mean age of 39.4 ± 10 years. An anonymous online questionnaire was used. The questionnaire was based on the guidelines for diagnosing and treating LD . Results. Most of the respondents work in a city (63%) or a small town (22.2%). 96.3% of them practice in primary care. 70.4% of the FPs had experienced a tick bite and 3.7% of them developed LD . 22.2% reported Lyme disease in their family. All of the respondents indicated erythema migrans (EM) as a characteristic symptom of LD , but only 3.7% of them reported that they would send their patients for serological testing. 18.5% of FPs considered seropositivity to be an indication for prescribing antibiotics. 85.2% of FPs correctly classified whether other than EM signs and symptoms were related to LD . 85.2% of the respondents said they would report LD to the Polish Food Safety and Inspection Service. Conclusions. Our study did not reveal a major deviation from the guideline recommendations. We found some FP misinterpretation, such as serology testing or antibiotherapy for asymptomatic patients. FPs should be trained at the clinical and epidemiological level. Up-to-date guidelines should be provided to FPs in order to limit inappropriate practices.

Bariatric surgery is currently the only effective treatment option for morbidly obese patients. There has been observed a considerable disproportion between the number of procedures conducted in Poland and the number of patients requiring such treatment. There are no studies assessing bariatric knowledge among general practitioners who play crucial role in polish health care system.The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of general practitioners regarding bariatric surgery.Material and methods. An anonymous questionnaire conducted among 282 general practitioners in 2010-2011 during local educational conferences. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions relating to fundamental issues of bariatric surgery.Results. Only one twelfth (8.1%) of the general practitioners questioned knows the indications for bariatric surgery, can apply them, and has epidemiological awareness. 61.5% of general practitioners know the surgical procedures used for the treatment of obesity, whereas 58% of them show the knowledge of surgical technique in which they are performed. Only 23% of general practitioners were aware that bariatric surgery decreases cancer risk. 92% of the participants noticed a necessity of education regarding the surgical treatment of obesity.Conclusions. Bariatric knowledge among general practitioners is not adequate to scientific research results published during the last years. Most general practitioners who participated in our study are aware of that and are awaiting for educational programmes focused on this issue.

Opis:
Ultrasound, which is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic modality that uses more and more advanced imaging techniques, has become the first-choice examination in various diseases. It is more and more often used in the general practitioner’s office to supplement physical examination and interview. Aim: The aim of this paper is to review the Polish medical literature pertaining to the usage of ultrasound imaging in general practice as well as to present advantages, disadvantages and utility associated with conducting ultrasound examinations by general practitioners based on selected publications. Material and methods: The analysis involved 15 articles found in Polish medical literature published in 1994–2013 in 9 medical journals. These publications were obtained using various data bases, such as Polish Medical Bibliography, Google Scholar as well as websites of “Lekarz Rodzinny” and “Ultrasonografia.” Results: Of 15 available publications, 5 papers present the usage of ultrasound imaging by a primary care physician for general purposes, 4 discuss the usage of abdominal scans, 3 – imaging of the neck and lymph nodes, 1 – lungs, and 2 discuss its usage for specific disease entities. In over 70% of the papers, the financial aspect associated with the usage of this modality in general practice is mentioned. More than a half of the publications draw attention to the possibility of using point-of-care ultrasound examinations. Advantages of ultrasonography most often mentioned by the authors include: good effects of screening, safety, short duration and low cost. The authors of eight publications also indicate disadvantages associated with ultrasound imaging used by a general practitioner. Conclusions: In the Polish literature, there are relatively few papers on the role of ultrasonography in the office of a primary care physician. This modality is more and more often becoming a tool that helps primary care physicians to establish diagnoses, accelerates the initiation of treatment and directs the further diagnostic process.
Ultrasonografia, będąca bezpieczną i nieinwazyjną metodą diagnostyczną, wykorzystującą coraz bardziej udoskonalone techniki obrazowania, stała się badaniem pierwszego wyboru w wielu schorzeniach. Coraz częściej stosowana jest w gabinecie lekarza rodzinnego jako metoda uzupełniająca badania podmiotowe i przedmiotowe. Cel: Celem pracy był przegląd piśmiennictwa polskiego opisującego wykorzystanie badania ultrasonograficznego w gabinecie lekarza rodzinnego oraz przedstawienie zalet, wad i przydatności wykonywania samodzielnego badania ultrasonograficznego przez lekarzy rodzinnych, na podstawie analizy wybranych artykułów. Materiał i metoda: Analiza objęła 15 artykułów wyszukanych w polskim piśmiennictwie, opublikowanych w latach 1994–2013 w 9 czasopismach medycznych. Publikacje znaleziono za pomocą różnych baz danych, takich jak Polska Bibliografia Lekarska, Google Scholar, strony internetowe pism „Lekarz Rodzinny” i „Ultrasonografia”. Wyniki: Z 15 dostępnych publikacji 5 stanowiły artykuły przedstawiające zastosowanie ultrasonografii w gabinecie lekarza rodzinnego w wymiarze ogólnym, w 4 opisano wykorzystanie badania jamy brzusznej, w 3 – szyi i węzłów chłonnych, w 1 – płuc oraz w 2 omówiono badanie w konkretnych jednostkach chorobowych. W ponad 70% prac poruszony został aspekt ekonomiczny związany z zastosowaniem ultrasonografii w gabinecie lekarza rodzinnego. W ponad połowie artykułów zwrócono uwagę na możliwość wykorzystania badań ultrasonograficznych typu point-of-care. Wśród zalet ultrasonografii najczęściej wymieniano korzystne badanie przesiewowe, bezpieczeństwo, krótki czas trwania, niski koszt badania. Autorzy ośmiu publikacji wskazali również wady związane ze stosowaniem USG w gabinecie lekarza rodzinnego. Wnioski: W polskim piśmiennictwie dostępnych jest niewiele publikacji opisujących rolę ultrasonografii w gabinecie lekarza pierwszego kontaktu. Ultrasonograf coraz częściej staje się narzędziem ułatwiającym lekarzowi podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej postawienie diagnozy, przyspiesza też rozpoczęcie leczenia pacjentów i ukierunkowuje dalszą diagnostykę.
