Sorbents are substances binding other substances on their surface. Effective sorbents have a porous surface. The adsorption activity of the surface is closely related to the local radius of curvature of surface irregularities. Suitable sorbents are natural and synthetic solids of amorphous or microcrystalline structure (Kyncl et al. 2008). Globally, the following adsorbents are the most used: activated carbon, zeolites, silica gel, activated alumina (Bakalár et al. 2005). A characteristic of effective adsorbents is large surface area of hundreds of square meters multiply by gram to the power of minus one [m 2 ∙g −1 ]. Other important features of adsorbents include specific volume, porosity, average pore diameter, pore distribution, etc. Some natural materials or industrial waste with high adsorption capacity, which naturally reduces the overall cost of their disposal, can be used for adsorption of heavy metal cations. Some of low-cost sorbents are: lignin, chitin, seaweed/ algae, zeolites, clays, fly-ash, peat, sand grains coated with iron oxide, modified cotton and wool (Pavolová et al 2006). In experiments of Cu and Zn removal from wastewater the following adsorbents were used (Bakalár et al. 2005): - Lewatit S100, which is strongly acidic, gel-like cationic ion exchange resin with particles of equal size based on styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers. Monodisperse beads are chemically and osmotically highly stable. - Chitosan, which is prepared from chitin, naturally occurring in the shells of crustaceans, by deacetylation using strongly alkaline solution. Chitin is a homopolymer composed of β-(1-4)- -N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. The ability of crustaceans shells to bind metal ions is assigned to the presence of exoskeleton in the molecule of chitin and chitosan. - Synthetic zeolite, which is included in the group of aluminosilicates, was prepared by zeolitization of fly-ash from energy industry. - Bentonite, which is included in the group of hydrated aluminosilicates, the main ingredient is mineral montmorillonite. - Slovakit, which is an inorganic composite sorbent made from pure natural ingredients. Its composition is a subject of patent protection. The aspect of time, i.e. the time the specific sorbent reaches the maximum adsorption capacity for the heavy metal removed, is also important in removal of Cu 2+, Zn 2+ and Pb 2+ cations. The experimental measurements of cations adsorption using the above mentioned sorbents are made at the initial concentration of 10 mg∙L −1 of heavy metal. The time to reach the equilibrium for all sorbent during separation of Cu 2+ cations from model solutions of wastewater was about 60 seconds except for chitosan for which it was almost 2 minutes. This is relatively very good result. The equilibrium of Zn 2+ cations adsorption at the experimental measurements for all the selected sorbents was reached in about 80 seconds except for chitosan for which this time was 2 minutes 5 seconds. This time was on average around 20 minutes longer compared to the adsorption of Cu 2+ ions. The adsorption of Pb 2+ cations was carried out at the experimental measurements in about 83 seconds for all the selected sorbents, except for synthetic zeolite for which the time was 1 min 15 seconds. The adsorption of Pb 2+ cations compared to the cations of Cu 2+ was 23 seconds faster and compared to the cations of Zn 2+ was 3 seconds longer. The most appropriate for the removal of Cu 2+, Zn 2+, and Pb 2+ is Lewatit S100 among the used sorbents; the equilibrium was reached in approximately 35 seconds, 45 seconds, and 83 seconds for Zn 2+, Cu 2+, and Pb 2+, respectively. According to the experimental measurements the longest adsorption time was for chitosan – about 2 minutes for Cu 2+ and Zn 2+, and about 1.5 minutes for Pb 2+.

Nowadays, the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) within the Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) appears to be a reliable and effective solution for patients with advanced heart failure (HF). After many years of work, extracorporeal pulsatile VADs have been replaced by new generations of implantable continuous flow (CF) pumps. Clinical experience has shown that present-day pump constructions still need to be improved to minimize the risk of complications during heart assistance. One of the complications is the pump inflow obstruction caused by the ingrowth of tissue into the blood inflow path and pump thrombosis. The main goal is to develop a coating for the external surface of the inflow cannula to provide controlled tissue ingrowth. The smooth surface of the cannula external wall results in the tissue overgrowth into the pump inflow orifice, and may be a source of emboli. The paper presents external surface modifications of the inflow cannula performed by different VAD manufacturers within the topography characterization. The inflow cannulas used in CF VADs are mainly made of titanium alloy due to its mechanical properties and high biocompatibility. In general, the discussed surface coatings were characterized by the roughness of about ≈ Ra = 15 μm, high porosity and good wettability Φ ≈ 60°. The surface was covered with titanium microspheres or titanium mesh. The developed surfaces and clinical experience confirm the ability to control the tissue ingrowth along the external surfaces of the inflow cannula at the tissue-implant interface.

Scharakteryzowano proces technologiczny tulei cylindrowych oraz sposób pomiaru i oceny struktury geometrycznej powierzchni. Półfabrykatem tulei cylindrowych był odlew wielokrotny specjalny w kształcie rury, wykonany metodą odlewania odśrodkowego poziomego. Charakteryzuje się on porowatą powierzchnią zewnętrzną, uzyskaną oddziaływaniem pokrycia formy. Powierzchnia jest oczyszczona obróbką strumieniowo-ścierną kulkami metalowymi. Tuleje cylindrowe przeznaczone są do zalewania metodą Alfin w blokach cylindrowych ze stopów aluminium. Przedstawiono analizę składu chemicznego i makrostruktury powierzchni tulei cylindrowej na poziomie mikroskopu świetlnego i elektronowego mikroskopu skaningowego z mikroanalizą składu chemicznego. Dokonano pomiaru i analizy chropowatości powierzchni. Profil tworzącej powierzchni zewnętrznej tulei cylindrowych mierzono konturografem, natomiast powierzchnię profilometrem skaningowym z czujnikiem laserowym. Podano wartości parametrów chropowatości wyodrębnionych profili wzdłuż tworzącej i obwodu powierzchni zewnętrznej tulei. Szczyty nierówności miały kształt zbliżony do kulistego. Funkcja autokorelacji powierzchni świadczy, że powierzchnia ma charakter mieszany (okresowo-losowy). Wykresy kątowe: widmowej mocy powierzchni i funkcji autokorelacji powierzchni wskazują, że jest to powierzchnia izotropowa. Zbliżone wartości udziału materiałowego i sumy kąta wzniosu profilu wzdłuż długości tworzącej i obwodu powierzchni tulei świadczą o podobnym kształcie nierówności powierzchni.
Production process of cylinder liners and methods of measurement and analysis of their surface topography are described. Special multiple casting of tube shape, made by centrifugal horizontal method was the semi-product of cylinder liner. It has porous outer surface as a result of form coating. This surface is cleaned by vapor blasting method using steel balls. Cylinder liners are subjected to casting by Alfin method in cylinder blocks from aluminum alloys. The analysis of chemical constitutions and macrostructure of cylinder liner are presented. The measurement and analysis of cylinder liner surface topography was done. The profileof generating line of external cylinder liner surface was measured with contour measuring machine, but its surface topography by scanning equipment Talyscan 150 with laser sensor. The surface summits shape is similar to spherical. The analysis of areal auto-correlation function proves mixed (random-periodic) character of surface topography of cylinder liner. It was shown after the analyses of angular plots of power spectral density and autocorrelation functions that the analysed surface is isotropic.

The aim of this work is to study the mixed convection boundary layer flow from a horizontal surface embedded in a porous medium with exponential decaying internal heat generation (IHG). Boundary layer equations are reduced to two ordinary differential equations for the dimensionless stream function and temperature with two parameters: ε, the mixed convection parameter, and λ, the exponent of x. This problem is numerically solved with a system of parameters using built-in codes in Maple. The influences of these parameters on velocity and temperature profiles, and the Nusselt number, are thoroughly compared and discussed.

An unsteady two-dimensional stagnation-point mixed convection flow of a viscous, incompressible dusty fluid towards a vertical stretching sheet has been examined. The stretching velocity and the free stream velocity are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation point. The problem is analyzed using similarity solutions. The similarity ordinary differential equations were then solved numerical by using the RKF-45 method. The effects of various physical parameters on the velocity profile and skin-friction coefficient are also discussed in this paper. Some important findings reported in this work reveal that the effect of radiation has a significant impact on controlling the rate of heat transfer in the boundary layer region.

The kinetic of imbibition of porous beds of different materials, with water solutions of sodium dodecylsulfate was investigated. The following materials were used: four kinds of active carbons: Norit R 08 EXTRARA, Norit ROROX 08, DTO and Merck; three kinds of mineral coals: hard coal, brown coal and peat; two kinds of graphite: natural Ceylon graphite, synthetic Acheson graphite and powdered sulfur. The kinetics of imbibition was tested using the capillary rise method, with the flow of liquid in the upward direction. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing changes of the saturation versus the time of imbuing the layer. Also, the influence of adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate from the solutions on the kinetics of wetting was investigated. The results showed that mineral coals, graphite and sulfur did not imbibed water easily, while active carbons and synthetic graphite were hydrophilic, though in different degrees, and had high imbibition coefficient. These findings were discussed in the aspect of their usefulness in the fire fighting technology.
Przeprowadzono badania kinetyki nasycania porowatych warstw różnych materiałów za pomocą wodnych roztworów dodecylosiarczanu sodu. Badania wykonano dla następujących materiałów: czterech rodzajów węgli aktywnych: Norit R 08 EXTRARA, Norit ROROX 08, DTO i Merck; trzech rodzajów węgli kopalnych: węgla kamiennego, węgla brunatnego i torfu; dwóch rodzajów grafitów: naturalnego grafitu cejlońskiego, syntetycznego elektrografitu oraz sproszkowanej siarki. Kinetykę nasycania badano metodą wznoszenia kapilarnego, przy zastosowaniu przepływu cieczy od dołu do góry. Wyniki przedstawiono w formie zależności stopnia nasycenia warstw od czasu ich nasycania. Zbadano również wpływ adsorpcji dodecylosiarczanu sodu na kinetykę zwilżania warstw badanych materiałów. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały, że węgle kopalne, grafit naturalny i siarka trudno zwilżały się badanymi roztworami substancji powierzchniowo czynnych. Natomiast węgle aktywne i syntetyczny elektrografit były w różnym stopniu hydrofilowe i miały wysoki współczynnik nasycania. Wyniki badań zostały przedyskutowane pod kątem możliwości ich wykorzystania w technologii gaszenia podpowierzchniowych pożarów węglowych materiałów porowatych.

Industrial oil was collected using hydrophobic silica powders. Silica nanopowder was modified with octadecyltriethoxysilane (OTS) using spray pyrolysis reactor continuously. Besides nanoparticles, mesoporous silica powder synthesized using Pluronic P104 was adopted as another oil adsorbents. Spherical macroporous or meso-macroporous silica particles were prepared by selfassembly for the removal of oil. The effects of the amount of powder on the oil adsorption were studied and compared with the results of various silica powders. The meso-macroporous silica particles were found to be the most efficient, indicating that both specific surface area and porosity played crucial role.

The proper interaction of bone tissue - the natural porous biomaterial - with a porous coated intra-osseous implant is conditioned, among others, by the implant porous coating poroaccessibility for bone tissue adaptive ingrowth. The poroaccessibility is the ability of implant porous coating outer layer to accommodate the ingrowing bone tissue filling in its pore space and effective new formed bone mineralizing in the pores to form a biomechanically functional bone-implant fixation. The functional features of the microtopography of intra-osseous implant porous surfaces together with the porosity of pore space of the outer layer of the porous coating are called by bioengineers the porostructural-osteoconductive properties of the porous coated implant. The properties are crucial for successful adaptive bone tissue ingrowth and further long-term (secondary) biomechanical stability of the boneimplant interface. The poroaccessibility of intra-osseous implants porous coating outer layers is characterized by - the introduced in our previous papers - set of stereometric parameters of poroaccessibility: the effective volumetric porosity φVef, the index of the porous coating space capacity VPM, the representative surface porosity φSrep, the representative pore size pSrep, the representative angle of the poroaccessibility Ωrep and the bone-implant interface adhesive surface enlargement index ψ. Presented in this paper, an original method of evaluation of the porostructural-osteoconductive properties of intra-osseous implant porous coatings outer layer by means of the parameters of poroaccessibility was preliminary verified during experimental tests performed on the representative examples of porous coated femoral stems and acetabular cups of various hip endoprostheses. The computer-aided stereometric evaluation of the microstructure of implant porous coatings outer layer can be now realized by the authoring application software PoroAccess_1.0 elaborated in our research team in Java programming language.

Water pollution and the lack of access to clean water are general global problems that result from the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities. Petroleum refinery wastewaters are considered as a major challenge to the environment and their treatment is mandatory. The present work investigated the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from petroleum refinery effluents generated from the Al-Dewaniya petroleum refinery plant located in Iraq by utilizing a novel graphite–graphite electro-Fenton (EF) system. The electrochemical reactor was a tubular type with a cylindrical cathode made from porous graphite and concentric porous graphite rode acts as an anode. By adopting the response surface methodology (RSM), the impacts of different operating variables on the COD removal were investigated. The optimal conditions were a current density of 25 mA/cm2, FeSO4 concentration of 1.4 mM, and electrolysis time of 90 minutes, which resulted in the COD removal efficiency (RE%) of 99% at a specific energy consumption (SEC) of 10.34 kWh/kg COD. The results indicated that both current density and concentration of FeSO4 have a major impact on the elimination of COD, while time has a minor effect. The adequacy of the model equation was demonstrated by its high R2 value (0.987). The present work demonstrated that the graphite–graphite EF system could be considered as an effective approach for removing of COD from petroleum refinery wastewaters.

The paper presents the test results of pool boiling heat transfer on the rough surface and the surface covered with capillary – porous microstructure. The porous layer is made of copper fibers sintered in the reduction atmosphere. The volumetric porosity amounted to 68%, while its height 1 mm. Distilled water and ethyl alcohol were used as the working fluids. The experiments have been carried out under the atmospheric pressure. Enhancement of heat transfer in relation to the smooth reference surface has been recorded especially for the low range of superheats, which might be related to the density of active nucleation sites. Experimental results have been compared with selected models of boiling available in literature.
Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań wymiany ciepła przy wrzeniu na powierzchniach chropowatych i z porowatym pokryciem metalowo-włóknistym. Mikrostruktura porowata została wykonana z włókien miedzianych spiekanych w atmosferze redukcyjnej. Porowatość objętościowa wynosi 68%, a wysokość warstwy 1 mm. Badania prowadzono dla wody destylowanej i alkoholu etylowego jako cieczy wrzących pod ciśnieniem atmosferycznym. Zaobserwowano intensyfikację wymiany ciepła w porównaniu do powierzchni gładkiej, szczególnie w zakresie małych przegrzań, co może być związane z gęstością aktywnych centrów nukleacji. Wyniki badań eksperymentalnych porównano z wybranymi modelami wrzenia dla danych powierzchni.

This paper studies the mathematical implications of the two dimensional viscous steady laminar combined free-forced convective flow of an incompressible fluid over a semi infinite fixed vertical porous plate embedded in a porous medium. It is assumed that the left surface of the plate is heated by convection from a hot fluid which is at a temperature higher than the temperature of the fluid on the right surface of the vertical plate. To achieve numerical consistency for the problem under consideration, the governing non linear partial differential equations are first transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using a similarity variable and then solved numerically under conditions admitting similarity solutions. The effects of the physical parameters of both the incompressible fluid and the vertical plate on the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles are studied and analysed and the results are depicted both graphically and in a tabular form. Finally, algebraic expressions and the numerical values are obtained for the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number.

Opis:
An investigation has been carried out for the MHD 3-dimensional flow of nanofluid over a shrinking sweet saturating a porous media in the presence of thermal radiation and heat generation. Convective boundary conditions for the flow phenomena are used in the present analysis. The governing equations are reduced to ODEs employing suitable similarity transformations. The solutions of formulated differential equations have been attained mathematically by fourth order R-K technique along with the shooting method. The impact of the governing constraints on momentum, heat, and local Nusselt number, are explored. It is noticed that the momentum and heat decrease with raise in the porosity variable, temperature reduces with an enhance in the thermal radiation variable, and temperature enhances with an enhance in the heat source/sink parameter.

Opis:
The investigation deals with the combined heat and mass transfer in a mixed convection boundary layer flow over a stretching vertical surface in a porous medium filled with a viscoelastic second grade fluid. The partial differential equations governing the model have been transformed by a similarity transformation and the system of coupled-ordinary differential equations is solved by employing the shooting method with the fifth-order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg iteration technique. Effects of various values of physical parameters embedded in the flow model on the dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration distributions are discussed and shown with the aid of graphs. Numerical values of physical quantities, such as the local skin-coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are presented in a tabular form. It is observed that the boundary layer fluid velocity increases as the second grade parameter, mixed convection parameter and Prandtl number increase.

Opis:
Construction of metallic implants with a porous structure that mimics the biomechanical properties of bone is one of the challenges of orthopedic regenerative medicine. The selective laser sintering technique (SLS) allows the production of complex geometries based on three-dimensional model, which offers the prospect of preparing porous metal implants, in which stiffness and porosity can be precisely adjusted to the individual needs of the patient. This requires an interdisciplinary approach to design, manufacturing and testing of porous structures manufactured by selective sintering. An important link in this process is the ability to assess the surface topography of the struts of porous structure. The paper presents a qualitative assessment of the surface morphology based on SEM studies and methodology that allows for quantitative assessment of stereometric structure based on micro-tomographic measurements.
