The article presents the results of an empirical experimental study into the functional aspects of polysemous communication in politics. The analyses of the results have led to the following conclusions in terms of the functional limitations of the application of polysemy in communication (from the point of view of the evaluation of a sender of a polysemous message): a message with a stronger polysemous markedness generated a higher agreement with the sender among respondents, the sender of a more polysemous message was evaluated as more credible, the level of polysemous markedness of a message was irrelevant for the evaluation of the competences of its sender, both for the evaluation of the agreement with the sender, and her/his credibility and competences, the level of the receivers’ awareness in terms of the message’s polysemy was irrelevant; however, the influence of credibility and the evaluation of competences on the agreement with the sender was significant.

The article aims to show the role of the context and the situation of speaking (communication situation) in the process of updating the meaning of phraseological units (fixed expressions). It has been observed that in communication, disambiguation usually takes place by means of context. On the other hand, it turned out that the context itself can be a source of ambiguity. The results obtained in this short study seem to confirm the claim that the update is essentially a modal process, and the semantic coherence results from the interweaving of language, pragmatic, socio-cultural and cognitive constraints.

On a pu observer que, dans la communication, la désambiguïsation se fait normalement à l’aide du contexte. Mais d’autre part, il s’est avéré que c’est le contexte, lui-même qui peut être source de l’ambiguïté.Les résultats obtenus au terme de cette brève étude semblent confirmer aussi le fait que l’actualisation constitue un processus foncièrement modal, et que la cohérence sémantique relève d’une imbrication de contraintes linguistiques, pragmatiques, socio-culturelles et cognitives.

Every grammar of the Swedish language provides information concerning the unit det. The Swedish det can be used both pronominally and adnominally, fulfilling a wide range of functions in the language. However, in traditional grammar one does not pay attention to the links and mutual relations between the individual occurrences of this unit. Thus, within such a framework, the Swedish det can be treated as an extreme example of homonymy. Is that possible in language?The main goal of this article is to show the semantic value of the unit det (in its nominal function) in contemporary Swedish, adopting the perspective of Cognitive Grammar. I shall try to prove that all uses of this unit are linked to each other semantically. Thus, the meaning ascribed to det constitutes a complex network of senses rooted in the prototype, which is a cognitive reference point within the category. The article can be interpreted in a wider context of the research concerning the use of units which are functionally “related” to the Swedish det in various languages, e.g. the English it, the German es, the Polish to etc.

This paper explores the lexicographic representation of a type of polysemy that arises when the meaning of one lexical item can either include or contrast with the meaning of another, as in the case of dog/bitch, shoe/boot, finger/thumb and animal/bird. A survey of how such pairs are represented in monolingual English dictionaries showed that dictionaries mostly represent as explicitly polysemous those lexical items whose broader and narrower readings are more distinctive and clearly separable in definitional terms. They commonly only represented the broader readings for terms that are in fact frequently used in the narrower reading, as shown by data from the British National Corpus.

This article attempts to explain the causes of the formation and preservation of the polysemy of the verb czuć (to feel, to smell, to taste, to see) by using the knowledge of synesthesia from various scientific disciplines. The ambiguity of the verb can be justified by the metaphorical extension of the concrete senses over abstract ones and the preservation of the remains of the original way of sensing when, at a certain stage, the received stimuli and the accompanying emotions or thoughts are not differentiated or specified. D. Buttlerowa clarifies that such a situation is a reflection of the synthetic and sensational perception of the world characterising the old ethne and every human being in infantry and early childhood. The combination of impressions coming from different senses facilitates learn ing, memorising and acquiring language early in life. Giving consideration to research from various disciplines of science permits the discernment of the reasonability to preserve the ambiguity of czuć and understanding of its cause rather than perceiving it as an example of denying the tendency for clarity and precision in language.

Th is paper discusses the main sources of ambiguity in Chinese-Polishtranslation of the contract legal language. Legal Chinese is very often the same as ordinary formal Chinese and that fact causes ambiguity in Chinese contracts. Th e author focuses on polysemy and homonymy which make the interpretation of legal language diffi cult and ambiguous. The meaning of Chinese characters depends on the textual context. However, when an interpreter does not know the background information of translated legal texts, it is very diffi cult to achieve a high quality legal translation. The abundance of homophones in Chinese language also poses a problem, especially in the case of contracts concluded in words, not in writing. The paper further presents different grammatical functions of Chinese terms encountered in contracts without a morphological change. Such linguistic features of Chinese language as: the absence of distinction between singular and plural nouns, lack of infl ection, no grammatical categories of tense andaspect cause ambiguity and vagueness in interpreting the Chinese agreements. Moreover, the understanding of such texts is sometimes incorrect due to omissions and elliptical sentences.The author also shows the diff erences in the meaning of terms, which apparently signify the same entities and concepts in Polish and Chinese legal languages but in fact diff er signifi cantly.
Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie głównych źródeł wieloznaczności w tłumaczeniu chińskich umów na język polski. Chiński język prawa jest często podobny do chińskiego języka potocznego, co przyczynia się do zjawiska wieloznaczności w chińskich umowach. Autorka ukazuje przykłady polisemii i homonimii, które to powodujące trudności i niejednoznaczność w tłumaczeniu. Znaczenie chińskich znaków zależne jest bardzo często od kontekstu tekstowego. Jednakże jeśli tłumacz nie zna kontekstu, w którym jest zanurzony dany tekst, trudno mu dokonać przekładu dobrej jakości. Duża ilość homofonów w języku chińskim stanowi niekiedy problem, szczególnie w odniesieniu do umów zawieranych w formie ustnej, nie pisemnie. W artykule zaprezentowano ponadto różne funkcje gramatyczne wybranych terminów języka chińskiego, które to występują w umowach w nie zmienionej formie morfologicznej. Takie cechy lingwistyczne języka chińskiego, jak brak rozróżnienia pomiędzy rzeczownikami w liczbie pojedynczej i w liczbie mnogiej, brak fleksji, brak kategorii gramatycznej czasu i aspektu mogą również powodować niejasności w rozumieniu i przekładzie chińskich umów. Poza tym zrozumienie takich tekstów jest niekiedy skazane na niepowodzenie ze względu na opuszczenia i zdania eliptyczne. Autorka ukazuje także różnice w znaczeniu terminów, które pozornie mają to samo znaczenie w języku polskim, jak i w chińskim, jednak w rzeczywistości mają różne pola semantyczne.

The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the cognitive semantics of the verbal predicates “чудиться”, “почудиться”, taking into account their inner form, and also to suggest a linguo‑cognitive model for explaining polysemy. The object of the study is the different contextual meanings of the verbal predicates “чудиться”, “почудиться” in the contexts of fictional discourse, the subject is cognitive semantics as a repeated structure of cognitive processes reflecting the patterns of understanding and thinking. The article presents a typology of contexts for the functioning of verbal predicates, their different contextual meanings are defined, the semantic dependence of the contextual meaning of the verb word on the semantics of the broader context analyzed, the role of the inner form in the creation of polysemy determined, while a linguo‑cognitive model for explaining polysemy in terms of “gestalt”, “focus”, “background – figure”, “focusing – defocusing” is suggested.

Starting with the thesis that Gombrowicz’s unique “linguistic form”, which is a stylistic equivalent of form as an anthropological-philosophical category, we claim that it has become an important point of reference, a kind of stylistic stamp or matrix, used and modified by contemporary Polish authors. Following Olaf Kühl’s suggestions in his Stilistik einer Verdrängung. Zur Prosa von Witold Gombrowicz, we assume that indeterminacy and ambiguity are most characteristic features of Gombrowicz’s style clearly manifested upon the level of semantics (polysemy) and syntax (nominalised construction, retardation syntax). Reading texts by Wojciech Kuczok, Jerzy Pilch, Micha³ Witkowski, and Szczepan Twardoch, we find variously functionalized features of this style on all formal and thematic levels.

It has been an empirical fact that almost all the words are polysemous. A standard dictionary such as the Petit Robert lists 60,000 entries which correspond to 300,000 meanings. Thus, in this particular dictionary one word is paired with five different senses on average. Moreover, what is being dealt with here is no more than a general reference work, designed for a daily use. It contains only most frequent and general items, but disregards all other available meanings. In what follows, contextual properties will be demonstrated to be able to set apart each instance of polysemy, thus offering an effectual tool likely to do away with ambiguities.

The present article discusses selected examples of the poetic means which Seneca uses in order to achieve the effect of synaesthesia in his tragedies. An analysis of these examples reveals that the poet makes the most of the Latin language’s semantic and musical potential and in doing so achieves quite spectacular sensory effects.

The paper is concerned with shifts of cohesion and coherence in several Polish translations of G. K. Chesterton from the point of view of the procedural approach, in which the choice of particular linguistic/textual devices is indicative of the text producer’s intended meaning. As regards cohesion, the paper touches upon lexical cohesion and conjunction. It discusses the eff ects of replacing repetition with variation, and of disambiguating and explicating conjunctions. As for coherence, an analysis is carried out which shows how the translator’s failure to render a polysemous word adequately detracted from the TT’s coherence. Also, an example is given of coherence being affected by polysemy in the TT. The aim of the paper is to find out what kind of issues and regularities connected with cohesion and coherence emerge in the translation process and how these affect target texts.

Opis:
Swahili kinship terms are highly polysemous and occur in many figurative meanings out of which some are fully conventionalized in language usage. The article focuses on a specific case of such extensions which metaphorically frames an unrelated person as one’s kin. The usage patterns of this “fictive” kinship will be analyzed in various pragmatic contexts demonstrating their illocutionary and perlocutionary effects. In addition, it will be shown that this particular extension, as well as other multiple figurative uses of kinship terms correlate with the Swahili cultural model and the high appreciation of one’s family in the community’s system of values.

Although polysemous nominations appear in all the semantic groups presented in the article, polysemy is not a representative phenomenon in the modern Russian jargon. The paper focuses on synonymy and polysemy in the language of law in English-speaking countries. The introductory part briefly outlines the process of legal translation and tackle the specificity of bijural translation. Then, traditional understanding of what a term is and its application to legal terminology is considered; three different levels of vocabulary used in legal texts are outlined and their relevance to bijural translation explained. Next, synonyms in the language of law are considered with respect to their intension and distribution, and examples are given to show that most expressions or phrases which are interchangeable synonyms in the general language should be treated carefully in legal translation. Finally, polysemes in legal terminology are discussed and examples given to illustrate problems potentially encountered by translators.
