Athenian funeral oration (epitaphios logos) belongs to the epideictic rhetoric. But according to Aristotle the topics used in epideictic oratory could be applied in the deliberative kind, after some modification in the matters of language. In this article I consider the means proposed in the narrative part of the composition, which can be used instead of argumentation in epideictic oratory, i.e. amplification, metaphors and actualization (putting things before the eyes, gr. energeia, lat. evidentia). My purpose is to answer the question who was/is the recipient of Athenian funeral oration. In my opinion there are three kinds of primary recipients: the dead soldiers in the battle, the listeners present at the celebration (Athenians and foreigners) and the Idea of Democracy itself. I also try to find the so-called secondary recipient of Athenian funeral oration. I treat Athenian funeral oration as a hybrid genre of Greek rhetoric.

In the paper, the chosen cases of using the proper names revealing the residual orality in the term of Walter Ong are presented. What is characteristic, proper names are used in the extensive, aggregative formulas, in their full-forms rather than in potential abbreviated forms (e.g. name of Polish political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość instead its abbreviation PiS). Another feature is formulas with the stable collocations, used for strengthen the persuasive value of the utterances. Another residual orality features are: agonistically toned and homeostatic – proper names in those utterances may assist in the political rhetoric, or ever strengthen the creation of the new political myths.

Opis:
Manichean political rhetoric can be best summarized as a generalized trend, by an agent with political power in a given field, to increasingly express themselves in their official capacity as a political actor through a binary lens: presenting issues and/or solutions to the public in that field of power as being either “A or B”. This reductionism in presentation of problems and solutions appears, historically, to coincide with a rise in autocratic behavior on the part of the political actor. To this day, however, a true predictive test for the emergence of Manichean political rhetoric, does not exist. While we can often observe and critic the presence of it, and the transition from complex to binary rhetoric after such rheto-ric has been used, a predictive determinative framework (one that can say with a high degree of accura-cy that this shift is about to happen) still does not exist. This articles is an attempt to do two things: understand more accurately the difficulties that arise in attempting to create such a predictive frame-work and provide theoretical modeling of such frameworks to assess their potential functionality as predictive tools.

Opis:
It is usual to associate the word “demagogue” with bad political leadership. At worst, it is also usual to think about a leader that uses deception and feeds on the more primal emotions of the people to get what he wants. But, in reality, answering the question of what a demagogue was is far from easy. Thus, this paper hypothesizes that there is no substantial difference between a demagogue and a rhetor in Athenian democracy. As its method, the paper analyses the context of use of the term by the different actors as to shed some light on their intentions. First, the paper examines the concept of “demagogue” and how the term appears in the democratic tradition, by focusing on its usage in the works of authors such as Aristophanes, Lysias and Thucydides. Next, it refers to the way in which adversaries of Athenian democracy, especially deriving from philosophy, used the term. As this paper will show, there is a significant difference between the two usages, the former being descriptive and the latter pejorative. Finally, the paper concludes that both in the descriptive and pejorative sense, being a demagogue meant to be a rhetor, a leader of the demos.

Launched on ‘International Women’s Day’ on 7 March 2008, Wikigender is a project created by the OECD Development Centre that aims to facilitate the exchange and improvement of knowledge on gender-related issues around the world. Girls: A No Ceilings Conversation was an event hosted on 17 April 2014 by the Clinton Foundation ‘No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project’, was designed to foster and advance progress for women and girls worldwide. The two projects are investigated here as new types of communication on the World Wide Web. The analysis tries to ascertain whether and to what extent the generic features and discursive strategies of the two new collaborative platforms contribute to the co-construction of information, the dissemination of knowledge and awareness, and the development of a participatory agenda (Jones 2008; Campagna, Garzone, Ilie and Rowley-Jolivet 2012) on themes related to gender as well as resistance to inequality and otherness. An examination of these two examples of on-line communication will entail a scrutiny of new digital genres (Yates, Orlikowski and Renneker 1997), of the genre-specific features of web communication (Gruber 2008), and of the democratizing impetus embedded in their discourse. Promoting the exchange and creation of information and increasing citizens’ access to it enables readers to simultaneously become users, writers and critics; it seems to be the new trend of new web-mediated forms of communication that is resulting in the ‘democratization’ (Fairclough 1992; 1995a; 1995b; 1998) of several types of discourse.

XX w. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę opisu obu modeli, ich metaforyki i głównych tematów przez pryzmat najczęstszych słów kluczowych i kolokacji.
Political discourse of the Western Balkan countries in the 1945–1980 period can be described as an ideology of Titoism and at least partially characterized by articles or speeches of marshall Josip Broz Tito. A quantitative analysis of its keywords and collocations that takes into account social and political context enables discovering two basic varieties of this ideology (an earlier one, N model, legitimized by the notion of ‘nation, people,’ and a later one, using the concept of ‘state’ and ‘country’), which transformed from one to another in the 1950s and 1960s. This article is an attempt to describe both models, their metaphors and the main topics through the most frequent keywords and collocations.

The article presents (from a linguistic perspective) the strategies of describing and evaluating the events of May 1977, which activated part of the students’ environment (critical to the authority) and the opposition during Juwenalia (annual Polish students’ holiday). The direct cause was the death of a Jagiellonian University Polish Philology student, Stanisław Pyjas, who had previously been within the range of interest of the security services. The analysis of the then official-circulation press and (complementarily) a KC PZPR (Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party) propaganda booklet (produced by the Department of Ideological-Educational Activity for internal use) has enabled the author to indicate the linguistic (rhetorical) means that were used for dealing with the crisis, including the ways of demoting the opponent (“they”), creating a positive image of the authority and its supporters (“we”), euphemizing events, and profiling assessments.

This paper synthesizes relations between Polish democratic system and literary practice in the 16th century. The paper analyses phenomena that project social practice of deliberation on what is important to the community, including political community, and are rooted in the idea of noble democracy – idiosyncratic, mixed political system. The author focuses her interest on the idea of concordia. Consensualism was achieved through debates, political disputes or agons. Deliberative culture also encouraged other distinctive literary forms such as dialogs (political dialogs), polemical treatises, speeches or political satires. The paper underlines the significance of the Protestant Reformation to the Polish Renaissance culture, which introduced modernising tendencies and which expressed the ambitions of influence, participation, public activity, and co-deciding about the community. It stimulated modern way of thinking and shaped the model of discursive society and democratic Church.

Opis:
The essence of European political-legal culture should be searched at its source, which stems from the practice of political-legal thought during the Greco-Roman period. A particular example of the cultural development process, including political and legal culture, is classical rhetoric. Bearing this in mind, the aim of the article is to point out the connections between classical rhetoric and political-legal thought. The intention of the author is to draw the readers’ attention to four selected connections described as: objec- tive, subjective, purposive and didactic. Objective connections are based on the assump- tion of common interests of rhetoric and the history of political-legal doctrines, related to the issues of law, authority and state. Subjective connections are the results of the fact that classical rhetoricians are simultaneously the creators of political-legal doctrines, and they are also those who contributed to the development of rhetoric art. The text of the article also points out the purposive connections between rhetoric and political-legal thought. They are the outcome of the mutual creation of political and legal culture, by referring to the idea of the good of the state or institutional and legal issues. In addition the article illustrates the merits of increasing the role of the issues related to rhetoric when teaching the history of political-legal doctrines.

This paper combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies to study the persuasive strategies employed by candidates taking part in televised pre-election debates in Poland and the United States between 1995 and 2016. First, the authors identify the key strategies and calculate the frequency with which they are used by individual candidates. This allows for numerical comparisons between politicians in the two polities, as well as between winners and losers, and candidates of the right and the left politically. These statistical results led the authors to look more closely at the individual styles of two contrasting debaters. We conclude that the rhetorical landscape of political communication does not differ greatly between the two countries; although the data suggest noticeable differences in the approach of political parties and between individuals.

This paper offers an outline of practical and theoretical relations between truth and rhetoric. A point of departure for considerations to follow are philosophical theories of the sophists, Plato, and Aristotle as well as modern commentators of political rhetoric. I argue that the predominantly rhetorical nature of contemporary culture is inextricably bound up with the controversial issue of political deception, its definition and function. I refer to the theories of Hannah Arendt and Jacques Derrida pertaining to the following issues: a relation between acting and lying, mass deception, and self–deception in totalitarian states. I further propose that classical ethics developing from Plato, Aristotle and Kant fails as a basis for the analysis of political and social processes in democratic societies. Key to grasping these processes is rhetoric – as an art of persuasion – which has nothing to do with the traditional true–false dichotomy.

By analyzing Ukrainian political discourse I managed to track the imprudence fond in the formulation of comments for different reasons – an inability to report or inability to control emotions, as well as a direct and deliberate strategy of applying all possible means of modeling verbal aggression, especially the use of invectives. The postulates of the author are confirmed by illustrative material – examples of statements made by Ukrainian politicians from different parties and groups, selected from the transcripts of the Supreme Council of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) from the year 2013.
