Opis:
In recent years extensive attention has been given to the Rubus genus, but knowledge on the ecology of most of its species, including rhythmic development, is still insuffi cient. Such data may have practical applications, since blackberry species are economically important. The goal of the study was to analyse phenology and growth rate of vegetative and generative stems in 10 Rubus species of different systematic affi nity (belonging to two subspecies and three sections), growing in the Dendrological Garden of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. Some habitat factors were also taken into consideration. Field investigations were carried out for three growing seasons. The plants were evaluated for phenology twice a week, while the length of their stems was measured once a week. Diff erences were observed in the seasonal rhythm of individual species. Weather factors distinctly infl uenced the course of development phases in all the Rubus species. Drought during the growing season caused fl owering disorders, withering of fruit, earlier autumn leaf coloration, and fall of leaves. Rubus idaeus and R. fabrimontanus ripened all of their fruits each year of observations and seemed to be the most adapted for fruit production. Rubus fabrimontanus, R. kuleszae and R. praecox were the most vigorous species with reference to shoot growth. This study revealed that only some species were fully acclimated to the conditions of the Dendrological Garden, since they successfully completed their entire fl owering and fruiting cycles.

The use of 2,4-D as a post pollination treatment to fertilize florets instead of GA₃ provided a two-fold improvement in seed set, culturable embryos and hence green plant production from wheat and maize pollination. The efficiency of the wheat by maize pollination method for haploid production was equal to the anther culture method in F₁ hybrid combinations that were responsive to anther culture. However, in recalcitrant combinations obtained from non-responsive genotypes the maize pollination method was far superior.

Opis:
A high yield of oilseed rape can be achieved provided an adequate supply of magnesium and sulfur in critical stages of yield formation. The magnesium status in canopy was studied in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 growing seasons. A one factorial experiment consisting of six treatments, set up to verify the research hypothesis, was as follows: control (C), NP, NPK, NPK+ MgS - 1/3 of total planned dose applied in spring (NPKMgS1), NPK+1.0 MgS dose in autumn (NPKMgMgS2), NPK+MgS - 2/3 in autumn + 1/3 in spring (NPKMgS3). Plant samples were taken at three stages: rosette (BBCH 30), the onset of flowering (BBCH 61) and maturity (BBCH 89). An entire sample was partitioned in accordance with the growth stage into main plant organs: leaves, stems, straw and seeds. The yield of biomass, magnesium concentration and its content was determined in each part of the plant. The magnesium concentration in leaves at the onset of flowering can be used as the first predictor of yield. The predictive strength of the magnesium content in seeds as the final yield predictor corroborated the hypothesis of the importance of magnesium for the seed sink build-up. An analysis of relationships between the magnesium content in plant parts during the growing season and yield of seeds can be used to make an ex-post analysis of factors disturbing the development of yield structural components. The main cause of yield reduction in 2009 as compared to 2008 was the insufficient supply of magnesium to vegetative organs of oilseed plants since the onset of flowering. It was documented that the degree of magnesium supply to a growing silique is critical for the seed yield performance, as noted in 2008. It was also found that any disturbance in the magnesium supply to oilseed rape since the onset of flowering led to reduction in the seed density, which in turn decreased the magnesium seed sink capacity, as the study clearly demonstrated.

Opis:
Winter oilseed rape is the key oil crop in temperate climate regions of the world. Yield of seeds depends the most on nitrogen management throughout the season. The evaluation of N status in the oil-seed rape canopy was studied in 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons. The one factorial experiment to verify the formulated hypothesis, consisting of six treatments, was as follows: absolute control (AC), NP, NPK, NPK + MgS - 1/3 rate of total planned rate applied in Spring (NPKMgS1), NPKMgS - 1.0 rate in Autumn (NPKMgMgS2), NPK+MgS - 2/3 in Autumn + 1/3 in Spring (NPKMgS3). Plant samples were taken at three stages: i) full rosette (BBCH 30), ii) the onset of flowering (BBCH 61), iii) maturity (BBCH 89). The total plant sample was partitioning in accordance with the growth stage among main plant organs such as leaves, stems, straw, and seeds. Yield of biomass, nitrogen concentration and content were determined in each part of the plant. The study showed an existence of two strategies of dry matter and nitrogen accumulation by oil-seed rape throughout the season. In 2008, and partly in 2010 revealed the strategy of yield formation relying on relatively slow, but at the same time a permanent increase in nitrogen and biomass accumulation during the season. This strategy resulted in a high seed density in the main branch. The size of this yield component significantly depended on nitrogen content in leaves at the onset of flowering. In 2009 revealed the second strategy of yield formation by oilseed rape. Its attribute was a very high rate of nitrogen accumulation during the vegetative growth, resulting in a huge biomass of leaves at the onset of flowering. This growth pattern, as corroborated by yield of seeds, was not as effective as the first one. The main reason of its lower productivity was the reduced seed density, especially in pods of the secondary branch, resulting from an excessive nitrogen content in leaves at the onset of flowering. Irrespectively on the strategy of nitrogen management by the oilseed rape canopy, the best predictor of the final yield was nitrogen content in seeds. It can be concluded that any growth factor leading to the nitrogen sink decrease, such as reduced plant density and/or disturbed N management throughout the season, can be considered as a factor negatively impacting yield of seeds.
Hipotezę badawczą weryfikowano w 1-czynnikowym doświadczeniu, obejmującym 6 kombinacji: kontrola absolutna (AC), NP, NPK, NPK – 1/3 całkowitej planowej dawki MgS wiosną (NPKMgS1), NPK + 1,0 dawka MgS jesienią (NPKMgS2), NPK + MgS – 2/3 dawki jesienią i 1/3 – wiosną (NPKMgS3). Próbki roślin pobierano w 3 stadiach: i) rozety (BBCH 30), ii) początku kwitnienia (BBCH 61), iii) dojrzałości fizjologicznej (BBCH 89).

The present study was conducted to determine the quantitative effects of light and temperature on growth and development of organic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings in a glasshouse under ecological conditions of Samsun Province of Turkey. Seedlings were grown in four different periods (seeds sown on 29 September for 1st period; 2 December for 2nd period; 18 March for 3rd period and 6 July for 4th period). In order to create different light intensities, shading material having a shading capacity of 50% in 1, 2 and 3 layers was used in each period after seeding. The effects of light and temperature on plant growth and development (leaf area, stomatal conductivity, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, stem diameter and total plant vegetative dry weight) and the number of days from sowing to plantation of seedlings, were investigated. Obtained results revealed decreasing number of days from sowing to seedling plantation with increasing light intensities. Finally, the number of days from sowing to seedling plantation to be used in organic tomato seedling production was modeled based on the variations in temperature and light intensity (r2 = 0.92).

Opis:
The effects of water extracts of Chenopodium album leaves and roots on the growth of grass weed (Setaria viridis) and broad leaf weed (Corchorus olitorius) grown with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in greenhouse pots were studied in the National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt. In this experiment fresh leaf and root extracts and their corresponding dry leaf and root extracts at different concentrations were used. There were significant inhibitions in the dry weights of S. viridis and C. olitorius by all extracts at the flowering stage of beans and at harvest. The inhibition effect of all C. album extracts on both weeds (dry weight/pot) depended on the extracted plant organ (leaf or root), its fresh or dry form as well as its concentrations. The inhibition caused by the leaf extract was much higher on weed growth than that of root extract. A higher concentration of fresh leaf extract (25%) had the highest significant inhibition effect. The results also indicated that C. olitorius was more sensitive to the extracts than S. viridis. On the other hand, the inhibition effect of the extracts on the growth of both weeds was accompanied by increased bean growth and yield/plant. The analysis of both leaf and root extracts of C. album revealed that the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids in the leaf extract was more than triple that of the root extract. The results suggested that the fresh leaf extract of C. album may be a possible tool for the development of weed control using natural herbicides.

Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.

Etefon, trineksapak etylu i chlorek chloromekwatu są popularnie stosowanymi retardantami wzrostu w uprawie zbóż. Obok działania retardacyjnego (hamowania wzrostu elongacyjnego pędu), a tym samym ochrony roślin przed wyleganiem, charakteryzuje je także znaczny wpływ na procesy rozwoju roślin. Celem badań była ocena wpływu trineksapaku etylu, etefonu i chlorku chloromekwatu stosowanych w mieszaninach i w zabiegach sekwencyjnych. Badania polowe prowadzono w Instytucie Ochrony Roślin, w latach 2008–2010. Do doświadczeń wybrano dwie odmiany żyta ozimego: odmianę populacyjną — Dańkowskie Diament i odmianę heterozyjną – Visello. W doświadczeniach stosowano regulatory wzrostu i rozwoju roślin: trineksapak etylu (Moddus 250 EC), chlorek chloromekwatu (Antywylegacz płynny 675 SL) i etefon (Cerone 480 SL). Retardanty stosowano w mieszaninach (zabieg w fazie BBCH 31 rośliny uprawnej) lub w zabiegach sekwencyjnych (I zabieg w fazie BBCH 31, II zabieg w fazie BBCH 37). Mieszaniny stosowano w kombinacjach: trineksapak etylu + chlorek chloromekwatu oraz trineksapak etylu + etefon. W wariancie zabiegów sekwencyjnych stosowano: trineksapak etylu (I zabieg) i chlorek chloromekwatu (II zabieg) oraz trineksapak etylu (I zabieg) i etefon (II zabieg).
Etephon, chlorocholine chloride and trinexapac-ethyl are plant growth regulators commonly used in cereals. Besides stem elongation inhibition and lodging prevention they strongly affect many processes of plant growth and development. Scientific literature confirms that they influence the photosynthesis through enhancing of chlorophyll content in plant leaves. Under favorable conditions they can enhance weight of 1000 grains, number of grain per ear and yield, even in the absence of lodging. Activity of plant growth regulators is strongly connected with weather conditions during a vegetation season. The aim of experiments was to evaluate the influence of trinexapac-ethyl, chlorocholine chloride and etephon on diploid (traditional) and hybrid winter rye. The plant growth regulators were used in two variants: mixtures trinexapac-ethyl + chlorocholine chloride or trinexapac-ethyl + etephon. The second variant of application was trinexapac-ethyl in a growth stage BBCH 31 and chlorocholine chloride in BBCH 37 or trinexapac-ethyl in BBCH 31 and etephon in a growth stage BBCH 37. Field trials were conducted in the years 2008–2010 in Plant Protection Institute in Poland. The experimental design was a randomized complete block containing four replications. In field trial the following parameters were estimated: plant height, chlorophyll content, lodging, weight of 1000 grains, number of grains per ear, yield, grain density, starch content, protein content and grain humidity. Results show different response of two cultivars of winter rye to the applied plant growth regulators.

Solanaceae plants have strong allelopathic potential, and therefore the action is confirmed through: a) bioassays with liquid or various solvent extracts and residues, b) fractionation, identification, and quantification of causative allelochemicals. Most assessments of allelopathy involve bioassays of plant or soil extracts, leachates, fractions, and residues which support seed germination and seedling growth in laboratory and greenhouse experiments. Plant growth is also stimulated below the allelopathic threshold, however severe growth reductions may be observed above the threshold concentration depending on the sensitivity of the receiving species. Generally, seedling growth is more sensitive than germination, particularly root growth. Some approaches showed that field soil collected beneath donor plants significantly reduced or somewhat promoted the growth of the recipients plants. Petri dish bioassays with aqueous extracts of different parts of donor plants showed considerable phytotoxic activities in a concentration-dependent manner with leaf aqueous extracts being most dominant. Delayed seed germination and slow root growth attributable to the extracts may be baffled with diffusion effects on the rate of imbibition, delayed initiation of germination, and particularly cell elongation; the main factor that is responsible for affecting root growth before and after the tip penetrates the testa. Light and electron microscopy extract analysis at the ultrastructural level are correctly investigated. Several Solanaceae plants have allelopathic potential, and therefore the activities, kinds and quantity of allelopathic compounds differ depending on the plant species. The incorporation of allelopathic substances into agricultural management might scale back the development of pesticides and reduce environmental deterioration.

In arid and semiarid regions, soil salinity causes the salt stress in plants and negatively affects the crop production. In this respect, organic farming practices are becoming the foreground as applications that are sensitive to the environment and support sustainability in agriculture. This study aimed to explain the role of vermicompost (VC) for reducing the effect of salt stress on lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. crispa) plant. The experiments were performed with different concentrations of VC (0, 2.5 and 5% VC on a weight per weight basis of soil-w/w) and salt stress treatments (4 and 8 dS m–1 NaCl levels). Under salt stress, shoot height, relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll a (Chla) content decreased, while electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities significantly increased in parallel with the severity of the stress. In this study, VC under the salinity stress significantly increased the RWC, gs and Chla, Chlt and carotenoid contents in the leaf tissues; however, MDA and EL contents decreased and SOD and CAT activities increased compared to the controls. In all levels of NaCl, the 5% ratio of VC significantly reduced the negative effects of salinity.

Opis:
The present study points to an important role of citric acid in limiting toxicity of aluminium ions for pea plants which was confirmed by the plants’ growth, development and yield. Excess of aluminium influenced plant nutrition with Ca, P, Mg, and K as this toxic element did not only gather in the roots of the studied plants but also in their above-ground parts. Limitation of aluminium toxicity by its complexing with citric acid clearly influenced a increase in the Fe uptake by plants and an decrease in the Mn uptake which was statistically proved.
